Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 11
———————————————————————————

‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ (1978) was directed by Raj Kapoor for his home production RK Films, Bombay. He dedicated this movie to his beloved friend singer Mukeshchandra whom we fondly know as Mukesh.

The cast of the film includes Kanhaiyalal, AK Hangal, David, Hari Shivdasani, Leela Chitnis, Sheetal, Baby Padmini, Baby Komal, Tun Tun, Vishwa Mehra, Mansaram, Pardesi, Shriram Shastry, Nandini, Mona, Seema, Mani, Yasmin, Bina, Subroto Mahapatra and Javed Khan.

The story of this movie was written by Jainendra Jain. Radhu Karmakar was the Director of Photography. Raj Kapoor who produced and directed this movie was also the editor of this movie.

HFGK lists nine songs and one dialogue track released on records of this movie. The total nine songs are including of their parts and the title song is mentioned to be in four parts. There are two more songs (the ‘aarti’ and ‘shlokas’ with the titles, and ‘’Yashomati maiyya se boley…’) in the movie having two parts. Narendra Sharma, Anand Bakshi and Vithhal Bhai Patel wrote the songs for this movie. Music for this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey, Bhupinder, Mukesh, and Nitin Mukesh who debuted as a singer in this movie had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 22.03.1978 with restricted viewing certificate.

Three songs from ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram-1978’ posted on the blog earlier are as follows;

Song  Posted On
Yashomati maiyya se boley Nandlala  07.09. 2008
 Satyam Shivam Sundaram  15.03.2010
Suni jo unke aane ki aahat …  11.02.2020

I watched this movie much later in nineties (I think so). However, I remember, in my childhood, the two songs from this movie were very much popular viz. the title song “Satyam Shivam Sundaram“and “Yashomati maiyya se boley Nandlala” as they were frequently played on loud speakers and radio. The title song was also the most favorite number of almost all ‘orchestras’ which used to play it during ‘Ganesh Festival’ or other festival programs. However, I didn’t like both these songs then.

Rather I very much like the song “Chanchal Sheetal Nirmal Komal” and the song being presented today, maybe I heard them on radio during those years. Later on, when I bought the album of this movie (an audio cassette in late eighties) the song “Suni Jo Unke Aane Ki Aahat” also become my favorite song from this movie with all other songs.

When I checked the ‘annual Binaca Geetmala’ for the year ‘1978’ I found ‘Yashomati maiyya se…’ (as expected), at number seven and the song was, surprisingly for me, not the title song of the movie but it was “Chanchal Sheetal Nirmal Komal” ranking at number twenty-four of the list.

Well coming back to the ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ today we have two songs posted on this day ten years back as follows;

 Song  Movie title-Year  Remarks
Satyam Shivam Sundaram  Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978)  03 of 09 songs posted
Hai isi mein pyaar ki aabroo  Anpadh (1962)  All Songs posted on the

Blog

As one of the movies i.e. ‘Anpadh’ (1962) is already ‘Yippeeee éd’ on the blog we have ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ to be represented with a song on the blog today. The song I have selected today was noted long time back and was pending for posting. It is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Bhupendra. I like this song very much and particularly for those few lines sung by Bhupendra Singh which makes this song very very special of course with great singing by Lata Mangeshkar and so greatly composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal to the beautiful lyrics by Vithhal Bhai Patel.

Let us enjoy this wonderful song now …

(Note: – In the movie, this song appears in two parts. The video of the second part is not available now however full audio of this song is available).

Blog Day :

3996 Post No. : 15092 Movie Count :

4142

Today 27th June 2019, is the eightieth birth anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman (27th June, 1939 – 4th Jan, 1994). We fondly remember him on this occasion and will be always thankful to him for giving us all those great nostalgic songs, great music and many everlasting gems.

As I was looking for a special song for this occasion and while going through his filmography, I decided to select a song penned by Nida Fazli. I thought they worked together in very few films so I was interested to introduce a new movie and I finally zeroed on this lesser known movie ‘Mangal Sutra’ (1981). I think even the song of today is a very lesser known and this might be because of this movie going unnoticed then. Even the filmography of RDB on ‘wiki’ does not have this movie in that list. (Since I could not prepare the details of RDB-Nida Fazli movies together I am deferring it for a post in the future).

‘Mangal Sutra’ was directed by B Vijay for Gaurav Films International, Madras. It was produced by Ravi Kumar. Mrs. Chandrika Shah and Mrs. Era Kalra were Associate Producers of this movie. It had Rekha, Anant Nag, Prema Narayan, Jagdeep, Madan Puri, and Om Shivpuri. The supporting cast included Keshto Mukherjee, Asit Sen, Rajendranath, BM Vyas, Chand Usmani, Jayshree T, Meena T, Guddi, Jezbel, Swaraj, NS Bedi, Shankar Singh, Vinod, Neeta, Sharma, Jailata, Baby Reema, Viju Khote and Madhu. Shashi Puri makes a guest appearance in the movie. And this movie introduced Master Vineet.

Story and screenplay of this movie was written by MD Sundar. Dialogues were written by Snehlata Verma. Editing of this movie was done by P Bhakthavathsalam. Vijaykumar Raichura was the Associate Director of this movie. The movie was passed by Censor Board on 13.03.1981.

This movie had total five songs penned by Kavi Pradeep (one song) and Nida Fazli (four songs). Asha Bhonsle, Bhupinder Singh, Dilraj Kaur, Lata Mangeshkar, Meena and SP Balasubramaniam had given their voices to the songs in this movie. Music for this film was composed by RD Burman.

One movie by the same title was also made in 1947 (as per note in HFGK-Vol-VI), however no songs from this movie seem to be available as of now.

In the movie this song happens to be on the ‘suhaag raat’ of Anant Nag and Rekha. When I listened to this song for preparation of this post I remember to have listen it somewhere earlier but I had forgotten it. This song is nice duet and as mentioned above in the movie it is on the ‘milan ki raat’ where the newlywed couple sings this song. And for that matter I think this song is for all couples even if they are not ‘just newly wed’, they can enjoy it on anniversary or anniversaries or even on the ‘silver –jubilee’ of their marriage 🙂 . The song is sung by my favourite singers Asha Bhonsle and Bhupinder Singh.

It is unbelievable that twenty five years have passed since our beloved RD Burman has left us in 1994. He left us in January 1994. I was posted at Kota then. I got married in June (on his birth anniversary) and I remember the first Hindi movie me and wife watched together at Kota was ‘1942 – A Love Story’. . .

Once again thanking Pancham Da for the lovely, beautiful, exciting music and moments its music has given to us. Let us now enjoy today’s song. With this song the movie ‘Mangalsutra’ (1981) makes its debut on the blog.

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 33

॰ ॰ ॰जिनके मिलन को तरसे
वो तो ना आए
मौसम आए जाये॰ ॰ ॰

It is your words that tell of this predicament. Seasons come and go, as they have, year on year on year. . .  but the one who this heart wants to listen to again, has not returned after going away. . .

– – – –

Rafi Sb has sung playback for a whole range of performers all the way from mid 1940s to early 1980s, and then some. He never declined to sing for any actor, be that a newcomer, a junior artist, or even non-entities who made just one song, one film appearances. On the other hand, the association of Rafi Sb’s voice with some very important and specific performers, has been well discussed and documented. Almost invariably, Rafi Sb was the singing voice for these artists, no matter what.

One name that is very familiar in this context is Johnny Walker. Starting his career as a small time comedian, Johnny Walker went on to command such importance in the film world that his role, and invariably a song lip-synched by him, was part of a formula in the world of Hindi cinema. Pick any Johnny Walker film in 1950s and 1960s – you can be sure there is also a song performed by him, with playback from Rafi Sb. Rafi Sb was able to create that unique and peculiar rendition for Johnny Walker songs, that blended so seamlessly with actor’s dialogue delivery and acting styles. That is the depth of the singing prowess of Rafi Sb. And it applies across all actors. He sang for them, in their own styles, almost completely making himself invisible inside that actor.

Today’s song in this series is a typical Johnny Walker song. The film is ‘Phool Baney Angaarey’ from 1963. The film is produced under the banner of Asiatic Arts Production, and is directed by Suraj Prakash. This is a social drama that weaves a story of a joint family during the period of India’s 1962 war with China. The star cast includes Mala Sinha, Raj Kumar, Johnny Walker, Ashish Kumar, Shammi, Mumtaz Begum, Mukri, Nasreen, Tuntun, Sarita Devi, Lakshmi, Leela Mishra, Chaman Puri, Ravikant, Mansaram, and Bhalla amongst others.

Geet Kosh lists six songs for this film. All songs are written by Anand Bakshi, and the music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji. Two songs of this film are already showcased here.

In this duet, Rafi Sb is accompanied by Kamal Barot. On screen, the song is performed by Johnny Walker and Shammi. The scenario is the first night of a newlywed couple. The groom is making efforts and requesting the bride to open her ghunghat and allow him to see her face. The exchange is comical, of course, given that Johnny Walker is the groom. He even mentions that yes, they have met before also, but that he just wants to confirm that he got married to the same person.

Enjoy this fun song, the penultimate in this series. Concluding episode should be coming shortly. 🙂
