Hullo Atuldom

“Awaargi” (1990) was directed by Mahesh Bhatt, story-screenplay-dialogues were written by Suraj Sanim, and produced by P. Raghunath (who happened to be Hema Malini’s uncle). The movie opens with a message ‘Thanking Hema Malini’. Anu Malik was the music composer with Anand Bakshi writing most of its songs. Playback singers used were Asha Bhonsle, Mohd. Aziz, Lata Mangeshkar, Anuradha Paudwal; the Ghazal Maestro Ghulam Ali sang the melodious “Chamkate Chaand Ko Toota Hua Taara Banaa Dalaa” which was was written by Asad Bhopali. (Recently I saw this, sung by a youngster, on satellite TV, and I was hooked on to it and the songs of the movie itself).

Meenakshi Sheshadri-Anil Kapoor-Govinda formed the main lead and Anupam Kher headed the supporting cast of Satish Kaushik, Paresh Rawal, Avtar Gill, Mahesh Anand, Deepak Qazir, Ghanshyam etc. This was a movie that was long in the making and finally released 4 years after it was announced. This was one of the two movies that had Anil Kapoor & Govinda in the lead; the other being “Deewaana Mastaana”; both were love triangles but completely different from each other.
“Awaargi” was the story of Azaad (Anil Kapoor) rescuing a girl – Meena (Meenakshi)- from a brothel and how he helps her attain her dream of becoming a singer. For this he introduces her to a hotel owner (Deepak Qazir). Here she is spotted by a stage singer -Dhiren (Govinda)- who offers her a place in his troop and thus begins her journey to reach her dreams. Then, of course, there is the usual of Azaad falling in love with her and not being able to express it when he feels that Meena is in love with Dhiren. In between the confusion among the lovers there is also the ‘tadka’ of some gang lords – Paresh Rawal & Anupam Kher- wanting Meena back in the brothel.

I have seen this movie a decade back and don’t recall how it ends; but I am sure one of the guys would have given up his love for the lady; or (just maybe) the lady would have decided who she wanted in her life. This was a movie where Govinda and Anil Kapoor played serious characters with Anil Kapoor’s Azaad being the ‘Tapori’ that he was adept at playing back then.

Today we are having the song with which Meena makes her stage debut with Dhirens’ help. It is in the voices of Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd Aziz. It shows the two dancers in tandem to movements set by Saroj Khan.

With this post we are wishing the actor/dancer/singer/comedian Govinda who also tried his hand at being a Parliamentarian for a term as an elected member of the Lower House (Lok Sabha). He has taken a step closer to being 60.

Today (24 october 2022), which is kaartik maas krishn paksh amaawasya in Panchaang is deepaawali, the festival of lights. Lord Ganesh and Goddess Laxmi are worshipped on this day.

Is there some rule that they should be worshipped only on this date ? Is there some rule that they should even be worshipped consciously ?

I have a feeling that majority of us who celebrate deepaawali on this particular day may have reduced it to a ritual imitating our day to day practices. It has sort of turned into like new year resolutions which cannot last for more than a few days after e make them.

If my earlier posts on the earlier occasions of deepaawali festival, I have discussed it in my own way. I have tried to stress the fact that performing the puja of goddess Laxmi in one day of the year will not make her to bless her. She is more likely to bless us if we perform the “puja” of Goddess Saraswati followed by that of Lord Vishwakarma, and that too in the proper way, not in the ritualistic way. “Puja” of Goddess Saraswati basically means educating ourselves, upgrading our skills, doing cutting edge research etc. All that takes years and in case of high tech skills decades and even centuries.

Once we educate ourselves we have to make use of that education to make goods and provide services of acceptable quality that could be sold to consumers. That is basically performing Vishwakarma puja. Based on quality of Saraswati Puja, our quality of Vishwakarma Puja is decided and that decides the degree of blessing from Goddess Laxmi.

To take a simplistic example, if our quality of education and skill is such that we can only manufacture low tech products like say garments, then Godess Laxmi will at the most bless us nominally and we will stay an LDC (least developed nation) or low income group nation. If our skill is of medium level (like say we are able to manufacture and export engineering goods) then we can beome a middle income group country. If our skill sets are such that we can develop cutting edge technology and sell that to rest of the world then we becaome High income group nation. That is when Goddess Laxmi actually starts to bless us abundantly.

Right now, India is a low ncome group nation with a per capita income of just over $ 2000 per annum. We will graduate to a middle income nation when our per capita income crosses $ 4000. It is easier said that done. Our neighbour Sri Lanka continues to hover around this mark and has failed to graduate to the ranks of Middle income group nation because they have failed to upgrade their skills to the level where they could break into the league of middle income group nations.

Likewise there are nations that are perpetually in middle income group ($ 4000 to $ 12000 per capita) but they have failed to break into the league of high income nations (per capita earning of over $ 12000) because that requires a different level of education, skill set and aptitude. This phenomenon is called middle income trap. Countries like Brazil and Argentina have fallen into this middle income trap.

High income group nations are those that have per capita income of above $ 12000. These counries are there because of their stress of high quality education and training, followed by strong manufaturing and services sector.

To cut a long story short, we still have a long long way to go before we can hope to be blessed by Goddess Laxmi adequately. We will hopefully becaome a middle income nation (per capita income of above $ 4000) by end of this decade and will not look back. Becoming a high income nation with a per capita income of above $ 12000 at current prices will take another two decades, depending on the level of education and skills that we are able to achieve for our masses. Hopefully we will reach there three decades from now. But that will not happen if we continue to carry on with our present habits. It is high time we stopped looking at education to be synonymous with acquiring degrees and government jobs. It is high time we shift the gear of our thinking. For long we are moving in second gear, whereas you need to shift to top gear if we have to race on the highway of progress.

I find it strange that the number of Deepaawali related songs in Hindi movies dwindled drastically after the golden era of HFM was over in 1980s.

“Pyaar Kiya Hai Pyaar Karenge”(1986) is one of the exceptions. It was produced by Suresh Bokadia and K C Bokadia and directed by Vijay Reddy for BMB Combines, Madras. The movie, which was a remake of Kannada Hit popular movie “NAA NINNA MAREYALARE”(Translation of Title “I will not forget you”) starring famous Kannada hero Late Dr.Raj Kumar, Julie Lakshmi, Shubha, Leelavathi etc.

The movie “Pyaar Kiya Hai Pyaar Karenge”(1986) had Anil Kapoor, Anita Raj, Padmini Kolhapure,Ashok Kumar, Sushma Seth,Deepak Parashar(in Special appearance),
Ramesh Deo, Seema Deo,Baby Guddoo, Satyen Kapoo,Naval Kishore,Bharat Bhatt etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. Here is the first song from the movie to appear in the blog.

The song is sung by Mohammad Aziz. S H Bihari is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song is picturised on Anil Kapoor, Baby Guddu and Anita Raj.

Lyrics and other details were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

The movie “Pyaar Kiya Hai Pyaar Karenge”(1986) makes its debut with the song.

I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy, prosperous and safe Deepaawali. May Goddess Laxmi bless us all in a more fruitful manner than the blessing that most of us are used to from her.

While we in this blog discuss songs, we also discuss other topics of common interest, like sports (mainly cricket), festivals, history, economy etc.

Tokyo Olympics concluded a few days back. As Indians, we had lots of sporting events to look forward to. Indians were participating in many events. Indians had pinned hopes of medals on quite a few of them, seeing that some of them were actually ranked world number 1, 2, 3 etc in their sports and they were given similar seedings too in the Olympics. But most of these sportspersons disappointed.

On the other hand, there were a few who performed beyond their rankings and managed to win medals. India won a medal (silver) on the very first day of the Olympics. First three medals were won by female athletes. Later, males too joined in winning medals.

Icing on the cake arrived on 7 August 2021, the last day of Olympics. The final medal that India won in these games happened to a track and field medal. It was the very first time that India won a track and field medal. And it turned out to be a GOLD medal, no less !

This gold medal event was in men’s javelin throw. Indians had never taken so much intetest in an atheletics event before this Olympics. I was one of those who followed the event closely. Since India actually won the gold, I dug deep and got all the relevant details of this competition. In this article, I present my findings, which is basically a description of How the Javelin Gold was won in Tokyo Olympics.

There were 32 javelin throwers in the competition. They were divided into two groups, viz Group A and group B, each consisting of 16 athletes.

In the qualification round, each javelin thrower was given three attempts in which to achieve the qualifying marks of 83. 5 meters. Based on the performances, 12 javelin throwers were to qualify for the finals.

In case less than 12 javelin throwers achieved the qualification mark, then the remaining slots were to be filled from those who had hurled the javelin the farthest among the non qualifiers.

Only six javelin throwers (three from group A and three from group B) were able to achieve direct qualification by throwing the javelin beyond 83.5 meters. Here are the details of these six direct qualifiers.

Gr A Gr B Overall qualification round rank
Name (Country) Attempts Result Group rank Name (Country) Attempts Result Group rank
Neeraj Chopra (India) 1 (86.65 m) 86.65 m 1 1
J Vetter (Germany) 3 (82.04 m,82.08m, 85.64 m) 85.64 m 2 2
Arshad Nadeem (Pakistan) 2 (78.50 m, 85.16 m) 85.16 m 1 3
Jakub Vadlejch (Czech) 3 (79.27, 78.96 m, 84.93 m) 84.93 m 2 4
L Etelatalo (Finland) 1 (84.50 m ) 84.50 m (SB) 3 5
Julian Weber (Germany) 1 ( 84.41 m) 84.41 m 3 6

Only six javelin throwers could gain direct qualifications. There were six more slots of finalists to be filled. Those six non qualifiers who threw the javelin the farthest were picked to fill the remaining slots. Following six javelin throwers thus gained indirect qualification for the final:-

Gr A Gr B Overall qualification round rank
Name (Country) Attempts Result Group rank Name (Country) Attempts Result Group rank
A M Novac (Romania) 3 (83.27 m, 80.90 m, x) 83.27 m (SB) 4 7
V Vesely (Czech) 3 (x, 83.04 m, x) 83.04 m (SB) 5 8
Alaksei Katkavets (BLR) 3 (81.08 m, 81.73 m, 82.72 m) 82.72 m 4 9
Andrian Mardare (Moldova) 3 (80.69, 78.95 m, 82.70 m) 82.70 m 5 10
Pavel Mialeshka (BLR) 3 (x, 82.17m, 82.64 m ) 82.64 m 6 11
Kim Amb (Sweden) 3 (82.40 m, 79.87, x ) 82.40 m (SB) 7 12

Thus four javelin throwers from group A and two from group B gained indirect qualification for the final. Remaining 20 javelin throwers (9 from group A and 11 from group B ) were eliminated.

The qualifying mark of 83.50 m does not appear too daunting for the competitors on paper, seeing that the personal best throws of most competitors, including those who failed to qualify was well over 83.5 meters. Some of the non qualifiers in fact had hurled the spear well over 90 m in the past. Some of them were past Olympic medal winners and world champions as well. Those who failed to qualify for the final included Walcott Keshorn (Trinidad and Tobago)-2012 Olympics gold medalist (90.16 m personal best), Julius Yego (Kenya)- 2016 Olympics silver medalist (personal best of 92.72 m), Cheng Chao Tsun (Taipeh)- Asian record holder with 91.36 m throw, Peter Anderson (Grenada)-current world champion (personal best 87.31 m) etc.

But World class sports is played on the field and it depends on performance on the day. Past records and achievements count for little. It is the three throws in the qualifying competition that determine who goes ahead to the finals and who get eliminated. Only six javelin throwers gained direct qualification. The six javelin throwers sneaked in as indirect qualifiers. The last qualifier who qualified could only hurl the spear to a distance of 82.4 meters, more than one meter behind the qualification mark.

Indians were cautiously optimistic about the chances of Neeraj Chopra because his performance during the current season vis a vis the performance of other leading contenders suggested that he was a medal contender.

Many leading contenders were eliminated after the qualifying round. The biggest gold contender was J Vetter of Germany, who had a season’s best of 97. 76 meters achieved in July 2021. But he too was on the verge of elimination in the qualifying stage, before he survived by crossing the qualifying mark on his third and final throw. Neeraj Chopra of India gave Indians a pleasant surprise by easily qualifying on his very first throw, and that throw was the longest throw of the qualifying stage. Thus he qualified as number 1 qualifier among the 12 qualifiers for the final. Vetter qualified as number 2. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem qualified at the third place, and Pakistanis suddenly found something to look forward to in the Tokyo Olympics.

The timings of sports telecast of Tokyo Olympics suited India perfectly. The telecast would beging early morning iST and would continue till late evening. Javelin throw finals were scheduled on Saturday 7 August 2021. Unlike the qualifiers, the finals were at night time. It was in the afternoon in India.

The rules for the finals were that all 12 throwers would be given three throws each. The first eight contenders after these three throws would get another three throws each. The throwers would then be ranked based on their best throws.

When the competition began, I took pen and paper and began to note down the throws of the participants. During the first three throws, the sequence of throwers was arbitrary (or so it seemed to me). The number 10 qualifier (Adrian Mardore) threw first followed by Neeraj Chopra (number 1 qualifier), then number 12 qualifier (Kim Amb) followed by number 7 (A M Novak) etc. The first three throws of the twelve throwers in the sequence in which they threw was noted down by me in a table like this :-

S No Thrower (Country) First throw (m) Second throw (m) Third throw (m) Best throw (m) Standing after three throws
1 Adrian Mardare (Moldova) 81.16 81.73 82.84 82.84 Eighth
2 Neeraj Chopra (India) 87.03 87.58 76.79 87.58 First
3 Kim Amb (Sweden) 77.22 78.31 79.69 79.69 Eleventh
4 A M Novac (Romania) 77.03 79.29 x 79.29 Twelfth
5 Vitazlav Vesely (Czech) 79.73 80.30 85.44 85.44 Second
6 Julian Weber (Germany) 85.30 77.90 78.00 85.30 Third
7 Lassi Etelataro (Finland) 78.43 76.59 83.28 83.28 Seventh
8 J Vetter (Germany) 82.52 x x 82.52 Ninth
9 Arshad Nadeem (Pakistan) 82.40 x 84.62 84.62 Fourth
10 Pavel Mialeshka (BLR) 82.28 79.35 78.13 82.28 Tenth
11 Jakub Vadlejch (Czech) 83.98 x x 83.98 Fifth
12 Aliaskei Katkavets (BLR) 82.49 81.03 83.71 83.71 Sixth

After the first three throws, bottom four throwers were eliminated. J Vetter, the world record holder and the overwhelming favourite for the gold, had just one legal throw in his first attempt. That throw of 82.52 m kept him in the fourth position till the second round. But he fouled his third round and as many as five throwers threw longer than his 82.52 m in their third attempts. These five throwers advanced, and Vetter was relegated to the ninth position after third round. Thus he was among those four who were eliminated after round three. It was a big upset. The other three people who were eliminated threw lesser distances than what they had thrown during the qualifying stage, and their elimination was no surprise.

The remaining eight contenders then hurled three more throws in the ascending orders of their standing after three throws, viz the person eighth in the standing threw first and the person standing first threw last.

Here are the throws of the eight javelin throwers in the order in which they took their fourth, fifth and sixth attempts.

S No Thrower (Country) First throw (m) Second throw (m) Third throw (m) Fourth throw Fifth throw Sixth throw Best throw (m) Standing after six throws
1 Adrian Mardare (Moldova) 81.16 81.73 82.84 81.90 83.30 81.09 83.30 Seventh
2 Lassi Etelataro (Finland) 78.43 76.59 83.28 79.20 79.99 83.05 83.28 Eighth
3 Aliaskei Katkavets (BLR) 82.49 81.03 83.71 79.24 x x 83.71 Sixth
4 Jakub Vadlejch (Czech) 83.98 x x 82.86 86.67 (SB) x 86.67 Second (SILVER)
5 Arshad Nadeem (Pakistan) 82.40 x 84.62 82.91 81.98 x 84.62 Fifth
6 Julian Weber (Germany) 85.30 77.90 78.00 83.10 85.15 75.72 85.30 Fourth
7 Vitazlav Vesely (Czech) 79.73 80.30 85.44 (SB) x 84.98 x 85.44 Third (BRONZE)
8 Neeraj Chopra (India) 87.03 87.58 76.79 x x 84.24 87.58 First (GOLD)

One can see that six out of eight throwers who were eligible for three additional throws failed to improve upon their best attempts achieved during the first three attempts. There were just two throwers who achieved their best during the fourth, fifth and sixth attempts. They climbed up the rankings and affected the rankings of those whom they overtook.

Adrian Mardore of Moldova, who was eighth after three throws achieved his best throw of 83.30 m in his fifth attempt. With this throw, which was 2 cm better than the best throw of seventh placed Lassi Etelataro of Norway, climbed up to seventh position, relegating Lassi Etelataro to the eighth position in the final standing.

The other thrower who gave his best during the final three throws changed the higher standings in a major way. Jakub Vadlejch of Czech republic had managed just one legal throw during his first three attempts, but that throw was far enough to keep him in top 8. In his fifth attempt, he hurled the javelin to a distance of 86.67 m. It was season’s best performance for him, just like his throw during the qualification stage was his season’s best. With this throw, he climbed upto the second position. Athletes, who were occupying second, third and fourth position were pushed one place down as a result. So, his compatriot Vitaly Vesely, who too had thrown his season’s best throw in the final, had to be content with the bronze. Julian Weber of Germany, who too had achieved season’s best throw in the final, was fourth. Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan, ended up fifth.

One can see that Neeraj Chopra of India led from the front and he was never threatened for the gold. It all sounds so easy with the benefit of hindsight, but it was obviously not as easy at it looks like. In a country known for missing opportunities, allowing opportunities to slip away, choking at the last moment etc, it was such a refreshing change to see an Indian performing like a seasoned pro, grabbing the contest by the scruff of its neck and not allowing others a sniff of a chance. He qualified for the final in just one throw, ending up at number one among all qualifiers. In the final, his first two throws were longer than the throws of all other competitors and so he had sealed his gold in his first two throws itself. It looks so easy if you have a talented sportsman representing you. In reality, it was the very first time that an Indian was winning a Track and Field medal in an Olympics.

Indians would have settled for medal of any hue, even bronze, as their first track and field atheletics medal. The fact that it was a gold has immense significance. European nations keep winning track and field golds, and that changes nothing, but a solitary track and field Gold won by an India will change the fate of atheletics in India, and elsewhere. Let us not forget, even today India is world’s fifth biggest economy. If Indians take to atheletics with the same vengeance with which they take to cricket, then atheletics worldwide will get more popular than what it already is because one sixth of world population lives in India. We have already seen what happened to cricket in India (and worldwide) when India won ODI world cup in 1983, and later T20 World cup in 2007. I can foresee a situation when an atheletics revolution will take place in India in near future.

Those who think that this medal is one off and the normal service will resume after that, I disagree. THis event has changed Indian sports for ever. I can cite an Indian example to prove my point. India was a very weak chess playing nation till 1970s, that too when Chess was a game that originated in India. It was belived that Indians can never become chess grandmasters. It was in 1988 that India had her first chess grandmaster (Vishwanathan Anand). This event popularised chess in India as never before. Vishwanathan Anand went on to become five times world champion, and India today had 69 grand masters in chess. Chess too has an Olympics, called Chess Olympiad, played every two years. How many of us know that India at present is joint world champion in Chess Olympiad (with Russia)! All this had happened in a matter of three decades. I see a similar thing happening in Athletics. Indian economy and market can easily support and sponsor this forthcoming athletics revolution in India.

If one looks at the medal tally of various nations in Olympics, one will find that the medal tally in a way is a refection on the economic development of a nation. The top ten nations in the medal tally are major economies. Most are high income nations and others are just one rung below, viz Middle income group nations. Sporting prowess in a way has some definite correlation with HDI (Human development Index) of a country. There are some notable exceptions (viz some African nations), but otherwise economical development leads to overall betterment in sporting achievements. Hopefully, India too will join the ranks of top medal winners two to three decades from now, like how India has already become a top chess playing nation, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Russia, USA and other chess superpowers.

What is the medal tally that India achieved in Tokyo Olympics ? One gold, two silvers, four bronze. One two ka four, four two ka one. Hindi movie “Ram Lakhan” had already created a song for this occasion, as far back as in 1989, when Vishwanathan Anand was India’s sole chess grandmaster !

Here is this popular song of its time. It is sung by Md Aziz, Anuradha Paudwal, Nitin Mukesh and chorus. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. It is picturised on Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff and others as a dance song.

Rafi Sahab’s Legendary Associations – 6
———————————–————––—

Remembering Mohammed Rafi Sahab on his 41st remembrance day :

Writing a post of a song by Mohammed Rafi Sahab is almost a second nature thing for me. I have not counted but nearly 50 % on my post must be of his songs, the exalted one, who was especially blessed by the Almighty with a life, spend smiling and spreading smiles as far as I know. Some people do want to remember him by the sad songs which he sang with equal spirit, giving them his all, that the song, situation and composition demanded, the same as he did for other songs. I found this photo, and see who has the widest smile of them all: <a href=”https://in.pinterest.com/pin/46724914867514223/” this and this this .

There are platitudes and eulogies and tributes paid in honour of celebrities, when they pass away, nowadays it is usually on social media. And then there is the sea of humanity, that erupted on a rainy friday of Ramadhan 1980 on the streets of Bandra and Juhu. It was 1980, not the time when the dwellers of this city could afford a new umbrella every monsoon. So it was black umbrellas galore on the tv screen, and many people who were without umbrella, having come out to brave the weather or travelled overnight from other parts of the country. They all had one aim, to accompany their beloved Rafi Sahab to the final destination. To walk two steps alongwith the ‘janaza’ of a ‘nek banda’, with the prayers for the departed soul’s maghfirah on every lip and in the heart.

I realized the real pain of losing someone close and dear 9 years ago, when my elder sister expired. A few days after that, my father said that he didn’t know what to ask from the Almighty in du’aa, as most of my du’aa was for her health and long life. In my turn I told him that though we all are grieving and crying on her passing away, but the tears and sadness is all for us actually. The thought of living on without that dear one, makes us feel lonely and bereft.

A year before she died, I had visited her in Bangalore. She was over the top to have me visit her, and we went to a lot of places. One day we both were going somewhere and we passed a ‘qabrastaan’ where her mother-in-law was buried. She said a prayer and told me we should always recite the prayer whenever we pass a qabrastan. The prayer roughly translates as “today you are resting here, we shall follow you tomorrow, for sure”.

Some similar thoughts on passing away of Rafi sahab are expressed in this song written by Anand Bakshi. This is a unique song in the film ‘Kroadh’ where Amitabh Bachchan is called on stage to pay tribute of Rafi Sahab on his 9th death anniversary programme. Amitabh Bachchan says a few sentences and starts singing the song:

na fankaar tujhsa tere baad aaya…
Mohammed Rafi tu bahot yaad aayaa….

The singer here is Mohammed Aziz who himself has passed away a few months ago. He has sung this song in memory of his idol very feelingly and there are tears in the eyes of Amitabh as he sings on stage and also the audience who are watching it. The scenes of ‘janaaza’ that Amitabh Bachchan is seen as recalling, were truly witnessed by him as well as Anand Bakshi and Laxmikant Pyarelal(possibly). I am sure about Amitabh Bachchan having witnessed it funeral as I have seen a photographs of him with Amjad Khan, Vinod Khanna and Rajesh Khanna. Here is the article where he Amitabh remembers the same.
This article has some rare photos of the fateful day.

The song is so appropriate for this occasion, that I am neglecting to post a song by Rafi Sahab himself. But this song expresses the feelings of Mohammed Aziz, Anand Bakshi and Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Anand Bakshi, as the record holder for having written highest no. of film songs must be the lyricist with the highest no. of songs written for Rafi Sahab too. Laxmikant-Pyarelal are also having similar record with Rafi Sahab. Right from ‘Dosti’ and ‘Parasmani’, they were the one’s who justified the ‘Dosti’ and stood with Rafi Sahab through his thick and thin.

These artists composed and performed the song 9 years after Rafi Sahab’s passing away, and gave words and expression to the feelings of millions of his fans throughout the world.

Hullo Atuldom

This post by Avinashji reminded me of today’s song.

“Naam” (1986) had a cast headed by Nutan, Poonam Dhillon, Amrita Singh, Kumar Gaurav and Sanjay Dutt along with a few familiar faces forming the supporting cast. Pankaj Udhas had a guest appearance in the iconic song “Chitthi aayi hai aayi hai chitthi aayi hai“.

Avinashji’s post gives the technical details, censor certificate date, and the complete star cast. All the trivia that I had in mind before commencing this post viz: how the cast of “Mother India” became related post the marriage of Kumar Gaurav (Rajendra Kumar’s son) to Namrata Dutt (daughter of Nargis and Sunil Dutt). Atulji’s post for Chitthi aayi hai aayi hai chitthi aayi hai also mentions how the movie was meant to help Kumar Gaurav’s career but Sanjay Dutt benefited from the movie.

The basic story of the movie was- Nutan is the mother of Ravi (Kumar Gaurav) and Vicky (Sanjay Dutt). Both the sons love each other immensely and but are contrasting characters. Ravi is the more responsible and straight-forward of the two and is forever helping Vicky out of tricky situations. Vicky decides to go to Dubai to earn enough to keep his brother and mother happy and bring the family out of financial problems. Ravi helps him with the documents needed to go to Dubai but unfortunately Vicky finds himself in all kinds of problems on landing in Dubai- fraud visa, entangling with a ruthless underworld led by Rana (Paresh Rawal) etc. The story shifts to Malaysia, as Vicky is sent on an errand by Rana and Ravi ends up following Vicky there to try and bail him out of the mess. But only ends up loosing his beloved brother and bringing back his pregnant widow (Amrita Singh) to India.

Today’s emotional song is sung by Mohammad Aziz and Manhar Udhas. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and Laxmi-Pyare the music directors. This song may not have been popular in its time but deserved to be. THe song has both the brothers getting drunk at the farewell that Ravi has arranged for Vicky.

Let us wish Sanju Baba a very Happy Birthday and lots of health and happiness with this post. I recall having read a news, same time last year, that he was undergoing treatment for lung cancer. Hope he is fit and fine and will be back to what he does best- entertain his fans.

4757 Post No. : 16500 Movie Count :

4483

Slowly, steadily, and unnoticeably, the blog reaches yet another blog century. This post is post number 16500 for the blog. In other words, this song is the 165th century post for the blog.

When I thought about writing an article to go with post, I considered going through all the previous century posts. I kept going backwards from 164th century post, 163rd century post. After ten such posts, I gave up. If someone thinks that 164 songs and 164 song articles is a small number, then please try to do that exercise yourself. If one has to make a playlist of these century songs, the entire playlist will play for more than eight hours !

If that is the case for 164 of the choicest songs in the blog, then just imgine how many hours of music the entire blog contains. The blog has been going on at the rate of 3.5 songs a day for 4756 days. Assuming that these three and half songs a day are 12 minutes long then 12 minutes equals 0.2 hours of song every day. Multiply it with 4756. We get 951 hours of song in the blog. 951 hours means 40 days of non stop music if one plays it 24 hours a day without a break.

No normal human being will be able to do it, of course. If a normal music lover decides to savour music from the blog for just one hour a day, then he will have enough masala in the blog to last 951 days, viz 2 years and 8 months. During these 951 days, the blog would add another 195 hours of music, of course. 🙂

I think, some of our regulars have tried it. They should share their experiences with us. Since I post the articles and listen to the song myself, and that too more than once, I must have heard these songs for say 2000 hours already, but in a manner that did not burden me. Rather I must have enjoyed the experience, seeing that I am still at it, after more than 13 years.

The blog completed its 13th birthday recently, on 19 July 2021. Four articles were posted on the occasions. One was a Lata Mangeshkar yearwise songs series, which has been appearing every monday in the blog for the last 45 mondays. Other three articles, by three different regulars, were blog birthday celebration posts. My Lata Mangeshkar song series takes so much time out of me that it does not leave me time for any other article on mondays from me. That is why I could not post any special blog birthday articles. So I decisded to use this century post as century post cum belated blog birthday celebrating writeup. 🙂

As is usual now a days, our century posts are low key affairs. Our regulars do not seem to wait eagerly for them unlike in the past. Even the post writer leaves it till the last moment before he wakes up and starts to look desperately for a song appropriate for the occasion. Surprisingly, despite of such negligence, we always manage to find songs that are eminently suitable for the occasion.

Most of the blog century posts are from the golden era. The blog itself mainly covers songs from that era. But we have songs (including blog century songs) from pre golden era (before 1949) and also songs from post golden era (songs released after 1980).

It is popularly believed that the golden era of HFM was over after 1980. Even then, we continued to get some wonderful songs in HFM. Quite a few songs after 1980 have figured in the blog as blog century songs. Here are their details:

Blog post number Date (Blog day number) Song Movie (Year) Remarks
4100 30 june 2011 (1077) Aisa lage kahin door se Trishaagni (1988)
9800 1 May 2014(2113) Maine tumse kuchh nahin maanga Katha (1983)
13500 3 August 2017(3303) Ye paisa bolta hai Kaala Baazaar (1989)
15200 4 September 2019 (4065) Dil mein Mars hai Mission Mangal (2019) Newest century song in the blog
15500 27 March 2020(4270) Uljhan ho chaahe koi Chambal Ke Daaku (1982) One of the rarest songs
15600 11 May 2020 (4315) Goriya uski deewaani Aag Ka Darya (1990)
16100 15 December 2020 (4533) Hai ye kaisa nasha Chorni (1981)

One can see that as many as six songs from the decade of 1980s have figured i the blog as Blog century posts. But the newest song that has figured as the blog century post is from 2019. This song from Mission Mangal”(2019) became a century post in 2019, viz in the same year when this movie and its songs were released. That is one big surprise for most blog regulars. Even I , who presented the article, was surprised. I had myself forgoten about the fact that I had done something like this, and that too less than two years ago. 🙂

Songs that figure in the blog as blog century songs are special songs in one way or the other. And the speciality varies from one song to another.

The song under discussion is a song that was reasonably popular when the movie was released. The movie was forgotten with time and even this song seemingly went away. There are some songs, that get a second wind for some reasons and this time they become far far popular than what they were the first time round.

I can give quite a few such examples. Here are some examples:

April fool banaya(April fool) was a reasonably popular song of its time that got forgotten with time. In 1983 this song got reived when it was used in an important scene in “Andha Kaanoon”(1983).

Ek chatur naar(Padosan)(1968) was hardly popular during the first run of the movie. It is only after 1980s that this song has become an extremely popular song and it seems to have become more popular and this popularity is here to stay.

Main teri dushman dushman tu meri main naagan to sapera (Nagina) had run its course and had been forgotten. The song earned huge popularity in march 2018, thanks to reasons that had nothing to do be music and Indians. Non Indians popularised this song thanks to their childish pranks on the field of cricket. My writeup on this song described the funny episode leading to the revival of this song in this article.

The song under discussion got its second wind thanks to dance competion shows that have become popular on Indian TV. On these dance songs, ordinary folks dance on some olf Hindi film dance songs. In one episode one middle aged man, Sanjeev Sriastava (a ka Dabbu Uncle) performed dance on stage on this song alongwith his wife and took the TV audience by storm. Even Govinda, who originally danced on this song found Dabbu Uncle’s dance cute. This song was performed on screen by Govinda and Neelam. On a dance show, both of them were invited as judges. This song had earned such popularity by then that the two of then were asked to come on stage and dance on the song, three decades after they had originally danced on this song on screen. And they obliged.

And here is Dabbu uncle getting to perform with Govinda himself.

It goes without saying that this is one song that has been repopularised by an ordinary man. That is the power of an ordinar man. 🙂

The movie the song belonged to was “Khudgarz”(1987). The movie was produced and directed by Rakesh Roshan for Fimkraft, Bombay. The movie had Jeetendra, Shatrughan Sinha, Govinda, Bhanupriya, Amrita Singh, Neelam Kothari, Kadar Khan, Kiran Kumar, Saeed Jaffrey, Sudhir Dalvi,Sushma Seth, Praveen Kumar, Sangeeta Naik, Ghanshyam, Dinesh Hingoo, Satyen Kapoo, Mac Mohan, Master Javed Hyder etc in it. Rishi Kapoor and Abhi Bhattacharya had figured in guest appearances in the movie.

The movie was based on the story “Kane and Abel” penned by Jeffrey Archer without acknowedgement. Jeffrey Archer accused the maker of plagiarising his intellectual right without paying for it. It was the first time that a movie produced by Rakesh Roshan hit the jackpot at the box office. The movie was subsequently made in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Odia etc as well.

Here is this song from “Khudgarz”(1987). It is sung by Md Aziz and Sadhana Sargam. Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.
Since it is the dance on the song that has repopularised the song, I was curous to know who was the dance master. I had to watch the movie for a few mintes, till the first song appeared on screen, accompanied by credits. According to credits Dances are choreographed by Suresh Bhatt. His assistants were Aruna and Sujata.

Here is this fantastic song. It is a song that has to be savoured by watching its video. The song, and its picturisation has earned enormous popularity on YT channels which was hardly the case a few years ago.

The movie makes its debut in the blog with this song.

With this song, the blog now had 16500 song posts in it. I take this opportunity to thank one and all whose continuous support and encouragement keeps fuelling this labour of love musical bandwagon. Like the lyrics of this song, eve for us in the blog “dil bahalta hai mera aapke (is blog pe) aa jaane se”. Keep visiting, keep commenting, and keep supporting us with your encouragement. We still have lots and lots of musical gems to discover and savour.

Hullo Atuldom

“Ghar Ka Chiraag” is a title that has been used twice in Bollywood- in 1967 and 1989. The 1967 film had a cast of Dharmendra, Waheeda Rehman, Balraj Sahni, Indrani Mukherjee, Dev Kumar, Biswajeet etc and had music by Madan Mohan for songs written by Kaifi Azmi. This was directed and produced by Jagdev Bhambri.
The 1989 film had Rajesh Khanna leading a cast of Neelam, Chunky Pandey, Om Shivpuri, Shafi Inamdaar, Navin Nischol and Dipika Chikhalia in a special appearance. It had music by Bappi Lahiri and Anjaan was the lyricist. This one was directed by Sikander Bharti and produced by Rajeev Kumar Choudhry.

The content in both the films seem to be different going by the synopsis available on the internet. But I know for a fact that “Ghar Ka Chiraag” (1989) was majorly inspired by the 1969 Balraj Sahni- Sadhana- Sanjay Khan starrer “Ek Phool Do Mail”. This statement of mine is sufficient to give the followers an idea about the movie, correct? Of course, there were minor differences in the story. In “Ek Phool Do Mali” (EPDM) Sadhana becomes an unwed mother because she is molested, whereas “Ghar Ka Chiraag” (GKC) had Neelam getting pregnant with Chunky Pandey’s child. In EPDM Sanjay was a mountaineer and GKC had Chunky as a racing enthusiast. Rest of the story was same in both the movies. And both movies had melodious songs.

GKC had eight songs with two songs having happy and sad versions. “Tutak tutak tutak tutiya” was very popular when the movie had released and I think it was inspired by some Punjabi folk song; this one had two versions. Another song ‘yeh kismat hai kya, jaanta hai wahi’ also had two versions. The happy version is when Kumar (Rajesh Khanna) is celebrating his happiness with wife (Deepika) and friends. We see that this song is echoing the thoughts that Dilip Kumar and Shammi Kapoor had put forth in this song.

In the second version we have Rajesh Khanna singing out his life experiences, and says ‘ek thokar lagi, toota sara nasha’.

Bappi Lahiri used Mohammad Aziz, Amit Kumar and Sapna Mukherjee (youtube is crediting Alka Yagnik for this song, need confirmation) for this song and Alisha Chinai and Amit Kumar for ‘Tutak tutak tutiya’. Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik and Sarika Kapoor (another new name, for me at least) were the other playback singers.
Mohammad Aziz who sang the sad version of today’s song would have celebrated his 67th birthday on July 2nd. He was born in Kolkatta. He sang, primarily, in Hindi, Bengali and Odia films plus some Sufi devotional songs and also various genres in 10 other languages. He was also credited as Munna in some movies. ‘Mard’ by Anu Malik was his breakthrough though the 1984 movie ‘Amber’ with music by Sapan-Jagmohan was his debut in Bollywood. He has sung alongside all the prominent singers of the ’80s and ’90s with music composed by RD Burman, Laxmi-Pyare, Ravindra Jain, Raamlaxman etc; even OP Nayyar and Naushad.

Amit Kumar who has sung the duet with Sapna Mukherjee (or it could be Alka Yagnik, as per the tagging on youtube) celebrates his birthday on July 3rd turns 69!!!!! Is it so!!!!! Unbelieveable!!!! Cannot think of some people as aging, right no 🙂

We have enough fans of Amit Kumar on this blog and everyone knows his history, lineage etc. His last film appearance was in the 1989 release ‘Mamta Ki Chhaon’ which was a movie left incomplete by Kishore Kumar-his father. He had acted in many movies made by his father beginning with “Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein” in 1964. He won the Filmfare award for best singer in 1982 for the 1981 release “Love Story”.

Here is remembering Munna a.k.a Mohammad Aziz on his birth anniversary and Wishing Amit Kumar many more Happy Returns. May he continue to entertain us. He is launching a special RD Burman tribute on his birth-date on his YouTube channel… looking forward to it

aadmi kismat se kya
lad paayega bolo yahaan
darr ke kismat se ruka hai
iss zameen pe aasmaan

ye kismat hai kya jaante hain wahi
zamaane mein hai jinki kismat buri
ye kismat hai kya jaante hain wahi
zamaane mein hain jinki kismat buri
hooo ooooo
ooooo
ye kismat hai kya kisne dekha yahaan
ye kismat hai kya kisne dekha yahaan
apni kismat banaata hai khud aadmi

ye kismat hai kya jaante hai wahi
zamaane mein hain jinki kismat buri
ye kismat hai kya kisne dekha yahaan
apni kismat banaata hai khud aadmi

jitne oonche ho insaan ke hausle
utne oonche mahal uske kadmon taley
ho jitne oonche ho insaan ke housle
utne unche mahal uske kadmon taley

jinki mehenat ke dam se mahal hai khade
unko rehne ko milte hai kyon jhonpde
unki mehenat main ye akal shaamil na thhi
apni kismat banaata hai khud aadmi

ye kismat hai kya jaante hain wahi
zamaane mein hai jinki kismat buri

laakh mehnat se seenche koi gulsitaan
baag mein gul khila na sake baaghbaan
laakh mehnat se seenche koi gulsitaan
baag mein gul khila na sake baaghbaan
uski mehenat mein hogi kahi kuchh kami
warna kya hai jo kar na sake aadmi

aadmi khud ko insaan bana na saka
apni kismat banaayega kya aadmi
ye kismat hai kya kisne dekha yahaan
apni kismat banaata hai khud aadmi

hai donon ke dam pe ye duniya khadi
ye kismat hai kya jaante hain khadi
zamaane mein hain jinki kismat buri
ye kismat hai kya kisne dekha yahaan
apni kismat banaata hai khud aadmi

Sad version (Sung by Md Aziz )
——————————————–

har dua ek baddua
kyun ban gayi,
pal mein yahaan
bewafa kismat bhi,
uthth gaya sar se aasmaan

ye kismat hai kya jaanta hai wahi
zamaane mein hai jiski kismat buri
aadmi khud ko insaan bana na saka
apni kismat banayega kya aadmi
ye kismat hai kya jaanta hai wahi
zamaane mein hai jinki kismat buri

ye kismat hai karti ajab faisle
yahaan milke sab kuchh
bhi kuchh na miley
bhatakti hai yoon dar-badar zindagi
ke marke bhi insaan mar na sakey
ye kismat hai kya jaanta hai wahi
zamaane mein hai jiski kismat buri

ek thhokar lagi toota saara nasha
ab hai jaanaa kahaan kuchh nahin hai pata
laake kismat ne chhoda hai kis mod par
jo musaafir thha khud ban gaya raasta
ye kismat hai kya jaanta hai wahi
zamaane mein hai jiski kismat buri
aadmi khud ko insaan bana na saka
apni kismat banayega kya aadmi

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Naam-1986’.

‘Naam-1986’ may be a recent movie by the standard of this blog, but it made it’s debut on the blog long time back or precisely in the initial months of the blog and that was on 03.11.2008.

Its’ most popular song Chitthi aayi hai aayi hai chitthi aayi hai was posted on the blog on 03.11.2008.

‘Naam-1986’ was directed by Mahesh Bhatt for ‘Aryan Films’.

It was produced by Kumar Gaurav and presented by Rajendra Kumar. It had Nutan, Kumar Gaurav, Sanjay Dutt, Poonam Dhillon, Amrita Singh, Pankaj Udhas with Paresh Rawal, Aakash Khurana, Ram Mohan etc in it.

Lata Mangeshkar, Pankaj Udhas, Manhar Udhas, Mohammed Aziz and Kavita Krishnamurthy had given their voices to the songs of this movie.

Today we are going to listen the second song from this movie sung by Mohammed Aziz and lip-synced on screen by Kumar Gaurav.

I had watched this movie during my stay at Parli Vaijnath then in 1986. Though I do not remember much about this movie now. The today’s song seems to be a party song where paintings of ‘people suffering in poverty and hunger’ are seen to be displayed.

We can see Poonam Dhillon and others present their while Kumar Gaurav performs on this song.

I think all the songs from this movie are good songs to listen and they were all quite popular too, ‘chitthi aayi hai’ being the most popular among them.

Let us now listen to today’s song, the second song of this movie on the blog, appearing after a gap of twelve years, five months, and fifteen days (or 4550 days including 17.04.2021) since its first song on the blog.

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Jurm-1990’.

By the standards of this blog ‘Jurm-1990’ is a very recent movie. This movie made made its debut on the blog during its early days, viz on 12.09.2008 with its ‘heart-touching’ song ‘jab koi baat bigad jaaye, jab koi mushqil pad jaaye’. This song is said to be inspired by the song “500 miles” (Peter Paul & Mary version/ brothers four version).

Today we are going to listen to the second song from this movie. This song ‘marne ke dar se mere dil’ is said to be inspired by Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita”.

‘Jurm-1990’ was directed by Mahesh Bhatt for ‘Vishesh Films’.It was produced by Mukesh Bhatt. It had Vinod Khanna, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Sangeeta Bijlani, Shafi Inamdar and Anang Desai and supported by Sharat Saxena, Akash Khurana, Om Shivpuri, Jack Gaud, Mahesh Anand, Girija Shankar and others.

Story, Screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Salim Khan. Editing of this movie was done by Dimpy Bahl.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 05.07.1990 with restricted viewing certificate i.e. ‘A’ certificate.

This movie had six songs (as per wiki) including one three-part song. Lyrics for this movie were written by Indeewar and Payam Sayeedi, and music was composed by Rajesh Roshan. Asha Bhonsle, Amit Kumar, Kumar Sanu, Sadhna Sargam, Manhar Udhas, Mohd Aziz had given their voices to the songs of this movie.

Today’s song, the second song of this movie is appearing after a gap of ‘4572’ days on the blog. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Mohd Aziz. Lyrics are by Indeewar and music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.

Today’s song, a motivational song, is a nice hummable song to listen to.
Sangeeta Bijlani and Vinod Khanna are seen performing on the song in the voices of Asha Bhonsle and Mohd Aziz respectively. Mahesh Anand and many other artists can also be seen present in the song which also happens to be a ‘party-song’.

I have not watched this movie, so I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

Let us now enjoy today’s song …

kaanton mein ghirne ke dar se
aa aa aa
chalnaa naa tu chhod denaa aa
rone ke darr se jahaan mein
hansnaa naa tu chhod denaa aa
marne ke darr se mere dil
aa aa aa
jeenaa naa tu chhod denaa aa
