We are on the last date of the first month of the 21st year of the 21st century.

January happens to be a cold month in the northern hemisphere of the earth. And India is in the middle of having winter which is characterized by fog, mist, cold winds etc depending on the Latitude that one resides on. When I used to be in Mumbai, the closest I came to experiencing ‘Sardi’, ‘Thandi’ etc was in the last week of December or first week of January. That too in the morning hours, till about 8 o’clock, then the thermometer would read round about 27 and 30 degrees Celsius during the day. I don’t remember seeing fog or mist there, but I had different climatic experiences once we shifted to Bangalore. I have seen all winter related features which last from November to January end with temperatures dropping to 10 degrees etc. Now in my current station, which is in the midst of lots of greenery and away from the hustle bustle of city-life, though the temperature did not touch 10 degrees on any day, we have been experiencing thick fog, cold winds, cold floors, etc.

All this talk of winter and cold climate, in addition to sharing pictures of fog with friends and family reminded me of a whole set of songs:- ‘jab chali thandi hawa’, ‘thandi hawaa yeh chaandni suhaani’, ‘thandi hawaa kaali ghaata aa hi gayi jhoom ke’, ‘thandi hawaayen lehraake aayen’, ‘thandi thandi hawaa mein dil lalchaaye’, ‘mujhko thand lag rahi hain’ etc etc.

The songs that I have mentioned are all popular numbers from their times. But the movies of the new century are no different. They also have songs where the different characters are reacting to cold climates with lots of guts- it takes a lot of guts to shoot these songs in cold climates, with snow etc for added effect and in costumes that are of the thinnest fabric possible like chiffon, lace etc. (Possibly the only climate appropriate dressing was Saira Banu in ‘Junglee’ and some other heroines of the ’60s and Hema Malini in a few movies of the ’70s, recently I re-saw “Dost”.) For further enhancement of the scene we may even see short dresses with long boots. My sympathies with all the female actors who have done those songs and scenes. And what do the male actors wear in such songs- long coats, mufflers, gloves etc.

In the build up to this post I recalled a 23 year old song. This song was shot in the cold climes of Australia. I had mentioned this movie to fellow-atulites, on our WhatsApp group last week, when the India- Australia cricket series was on. The uniqueness about this song is the heroine is dressed in climate appropriate clothes and we have the hero trying to be MANLY and showing of his biceps etc in half-jacket and jeans. I also read the heroine reminiscing about how the actor was shivering during the shoot.

I am talking of Preity Zinta and Bobby Deol. The movie was “Soldier” which was released in 1998. It was produced by Ramesh Taurani of Tips Records and directed by the director-duo: brothers Abbas-Mustan. It had Anu Malik as music director and Sameer was the lyricist. It was the third highest grossing album of 1998 behind “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” and “Dil Se”.

This was Preity Zinta’s debut movie though she had signed “Kya Kehna” before this. “Dil Se” and “Soldier” have billed Preity Zinta as debutant; Preity had a supporting role in “Dil Se”. She was born in Shimla on 31st January. So today is her Birthday. Last I had written a post for her birthday was when she turned 40.

She has taken a sabbatical from acting a few times since 2009 for the sake of her IPL team. She has married her long-time American partner in 2016. In her career of almost 25 years, she has acted with all the top actors of the ’90s and later years. She has also acted in a movie with Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor where her character was negative and Schizophrenic. She was praised for her portrayal of the character. She also appeared alongside The Big B in an English language film that was directed by Rituparno Ghosh “The Last Lear” in 2007, this was a film-inside-a-film drama. She has also played the traditional glamorous actress in movies. She has shared screen space with top actresses like Madhuri Dixit, Rani Mukherjee etc too.

Today’s song is to wish Bobby Deol too, even if belatedly for his birthday which was on 27th, he turned 52. Born as Vijay Singh Deol into the film industry as the youngest child of Dharmendra and Prakash Kaur. He first faced the camera when he was 5 or 6 year old as the baby Dharam in “Dharam Veer” (1977). His first adult role was in “Barsaat” (1995) where another star-child Twinkle Khanna made her debut. He has one more “Barsaat” (2005) in the list of his films. He has appeared in a few mutli-starrers and also shared screen space with his father and brother in a few of their home productions. The “Yamla Pagla Deewana” series was good to see due to the Deols even if the story was lame, tame or weak. It is always entertaining to see the Deols.

I could not find whose ghazal is this is, but giving it here as it rhymes with the title of the movie ‘Dil Chahta hai” (2001).

The song is a duet by Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan. All the songs of this film are penned by Javed Akhtar and composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. At the turn of the century, the melodious songs, sufiana, fusion, newer music instruments were all the new fad. And the foreign location shoots were also back with a bang in mainstream hindi films. It was not only the Yash Chopra films that were shot in Switzerland etc. There is the whole world to explore and Hindi films have been shot at many locations.

The film ‘Dil chahta hai’(2001) was shot at Australia, when the character Akash played by Amir Khan, moves to Sydney to look after his father business operation in Australia. The character of Akash was the meaty one in the film, with all the jokes to crack, all the drama to enact. It was the role of Sameer played by Saif Ali Khan that was less complex, understated but full of contradictions. Akshaye Khanna’s character was Siddarth, the quite sensitive artist, who looks at the world through the artistic eye.

I saw the movie again recently after this last post and thought again, that it is hard to believe that it is a 20 year old movie. Obviously made at the turn of the century, it has those vintage mobile phones, which look like antiques to today’s generation. Our generation has seen the most sweeping changes in lifestyle, of all the previous generations. The earlier generations, had very less comforts than us but I dare say their happiness quotients was higher than us, as they had less expectations and desires. The more our generation has achieved, it wants more of it, the comforts and the excitement, and thus losing out on the contentment in life.

Moving to the film, it has a few one liner jokes that have become a part of lingo between friends in my generation, like “hum log cake khaane ke liye kahin bhi jaa sakte hain”, ‘Waise bhi perfection ko improve karna mushkil hotaa hai”, ‘Kitni ajeeb baat hai, ke ham teenon hi Sydney jaa rahe hain – tum, main aur yeh flight” wagera wagera !

The song of this post is a duet by Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik, with composers producing unique musical sounds, using newly invented music instruments. The song is shot in and around Sydney, in parks showing ancient trees, with Amir and Priety take the arial tour in a helicopter, overlooking the famous Lotus shaped Opera house at the famous harbor, picnic in the garden near the marina, travel in the city bus etc. I am not sure if one of the parks shown is the Botanical garden or not. The characters are having food at the cafes, and roaming around down town or up town whichever way you want to look at it, walking the harbour bridge which has the railway, road and walkway on the same level, while singing this song. Literally a steel sheet re-enforced ghat is shown to emphasis the line ‘pyaar ke ghat jo utarte hain’, which is carpeted with Chinese grass :-).

After one such outing the couple is returning home by the metro train, when Priety misses it, and left alone at the platform, while the train moves away. While Priety is waiting, an old man looking like a poor street person is approaching her and she is scared. At the same time Aamir returns by the returning train, and seeing that the old man has scared Preity, goes and hugs the old man saying ‘did she scare you?” ‘she did? how mean of her”. This is a movie and hence the joke. The big city crime scene is not a joke anywhere in the world.

Australia is a unique country, in a sense second only to USA. USA has a lot more mixture of different races. But Australia is something, which never sought independence from the colonial powers, because by the time the British empire was done with the continent, the aboriginals were extinct and the survivors were the one who had come to serve the British interests. So, no nativity and no going back to the past and not much history recorded of the pre-colonial era. Only to look towards the future, which is not a bad state to be in, all things considering. No wonder, it has been the land of opportunities for European, Asians, chinese, afrikans and Polynesians alike in the 20th century. It thrives in its solitary splendor in the southern hemisphere with jewel like cities dotting its coast line. The Chinese might have been the neighbors of long forgotten aboriginal races of the continent, as the continent is a snug fit into the south china sea. When the continents were a single land mass, of course.

Today is the 76th Birthday of Javed Akhtar, so to celebrate, here is this new age song penned by him. A poet is a champion who plays with words, and Javed Akhtar is a champion of champions in this regard.

7th August- remembrance day of Gulshan Kumar Mehta. It seems like just recently that my husband read the news of his demise from the morning papers and asked me who it was? I just rattled out a list of songs that were written by him and he was surprised that almost all the songs that I mentioned he knew he had heard but without knowing who had written it or other details about the song. Today is this Gulshan Kumar Mehta’s 11th anniversary. He is known popularly as Gulshan Bawra.

The name “Baawra” was goven to him by distributor Shantilal Dave who could not believe that the then 19 year old “Baawra” could write such meaningful lyrics. And this moniker “Baawra” stuck.

As I sat to write this post I found a link on youtube that gave me 45 minutes of Gulshan Bawra songs under the title “Best of Gulshan Bawra” and contained the following songs: tumhe-yaad-hogaa; Aapse humko bicchde huye ek zamaana beet gaya; Hamne jo dekhe sapne; Waada karle saajna tere bina main na rahoon; Le chal le chal mere jeewan saathhi; Jeewan ke har mod pe mil jaayenge hamsafar; Tumko mere dil ne pukaara hai; Yaari hai imaan mera yaar meri zindagi.

Of the 10 songs in that list I didn’t know only two:- “dil sambhaale sambhalta nahin” and “beete hue din kuch aise hi hain”. But of course all the 10 are present on our blog. And 141 out of the 380 odd songs that he has written, are present in the blog. His first outing in movies was in the 1959 movie “Satta Bazaar” (1959) with the classic ‘tumhe yaad hoga kabhi hum mile the’. His career spanned almost four decades and we have a range of songs to entertain ys from the patriotic Aaj hai do october ka din and ‘mere desh ki dharti’; melodiously romantic ‘chaand ko kya maloom’ and funnily romantic ‘peenewaalon ko peene ka bahana chahiye’. His ‘dukki pe dukki ho’ is as popular as ‘dilbar mere kab tak mujhe’. And I remember having seen him on screen lip syncing ‘deewane hai deewano ko na darr chahiye’ and also enjoying the party in ‘Parivaar’ when Nanda sang ‘aaj hai do october ka din’. He was there on screen in Manoj Kumar directed ‘Upkaar’ as the halwai’s son. His songs have been put to music by Kalyanji Anandji, R D Burman, Shankar Jaikishan. He was awarded the best lyricist Filmfare award for “mere desh ki dharti” and “yaari hai imaan mera yaar meri zindagi” which also topped that years Binaca Geetmala.

Thinking of this lyricist on his anniversary with a song from the 1984 release “Andar Baahar”. 1984 was when I had discovered the new crop of good looking actors Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol etc. They looked good and danced/ acted reasonably well too. So I could request my dad to see this movie. He was also a fan of movies which were of the ‘masala’ genre and had some good songs for added pleasure and relaxation. I could never convince him to see any of the Arty movies, but that is another story.

“Andar Baahar” was a movie produced by Romu Sippy and directed by Raj N. Sippy. It had a cast of Jackie Shroff- Anil Kapoor- Parikshit Sahni- Anita Raaj- Danny. This was Moon Moon Sen’s Hindi debut (one of the reasons my dad agreed to come for the movie, he wanted to see Suchitra Sen’s daughter).

The movie had a very simple storyline:- A cop-n-crook story. The crooks led by Danny crack the safe of a bank, and one of them turns greedy and tries to shoot the others out of his way. The sound gets cop Ajay Sahni (Parikshat Sahni) to the spot and one of the team of crooks runs away with the loot. Danny escapes from prison and threatens the absconding Gulshan Grover of killing his sister if he doesn’t return the loot. Gulshan squeals to the cops and inspector Ajay and his friend Ravi Khanna (Jackie) reach the spot. Only this time, in the operations, inspector Ajay is fatally wounded and now inspector Ravi seeks vengeance. With the permission of the commissioner he brings the wounded crook Raja (Anil Kapoor), who is still in his custody, to help him track Shera (Danny) Gulshan etc and bring the movie to a close. In the process Ravi Khanna finds a friend in Raja who takes Ajay’s place in his life.

Now since there are friends in the movie it is mandatory to have a song where the heroes proclaim their love for each other. This is sung by Shailendra Singh and Suresh Wadkar. R D Burman is the music composer. The song has a stamp of RD all over it:- great opening piece and in between the mukhda and antara. We can also hear the harmonica (popularly called mouth organ) through the song.

Incidentally it also happens to be Suresh Wadkar’s 65th birthday. He has been active since 1977 – ‘Paheli’ and ‘Gaman’ (1978). His voice was different from the reigning voices of that time. He also is trained in classical music which is evident in “Saanjh Dhale Gagan Taley” and his numerous songs which need a clear voice at high pitch. We have 71 songs of his on the blog. We have a lot more songs out there for us to learn the range that he can sing in. For today we shall hear him here in this song and wish him a very Happy Birthday.

So, today, we have two movies eligible for posting a song under ‘Blog Ten-Year Challenge’ viz. ‘Gunaahon Ka Devta’ (1967) and ‘Thakur Jarnail Singh’ (1966). In this post, I am presenting a song from ‘Gunaahon Ka Devta’ wherein Prakash ji had sent the lyrics of this multiple versions song.

When I saw the mail and the song title, I was surprised to note that this song has not been posted yet on the blog. But when I checked the other remaining song from this movie, I was more surprised to note that there is one more song which I like very much because of the actor performing on it 😊 but this song too is yet to be posted on the blog. Well, I had watched this movie during my stay at Parli-Vaijnath from 1985-1988. And this movie did bring back memories of my stay there and the ‘peak movie watching period’ for me there, when I used to watch maximum movies of yesteryear coming to theatres. I remember I liked this movie and its songs too.

The film is produced and directed by Devi Sharma for ‘Janta Chitra’. It has Rajshri, Jeetendra, Mehmood, Leela Chitnis, Aruna Irani, Randhir, Tun Tun, Farida, Shahid, Rekha, SK Prem, Sujata, Jankidas and Jeevan. The story of this movie is also written by Devi Sharma, and its screenplay was written by Ravi Kapoor. Dialogues of this movie were written by Sarshar Sailani. Editing of this movie was done by Dharamvir. The movie was passed by Censor Board on 19.05.1967.

This movie has seven songs including one multiple version song. Lyrics were written by Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra (one song – the title song only). Music of this movie was composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. Mohd Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh, Manna Dey and Sharda had given their voices to for the songs in this movie.

Today’s song is the multiple version song where the male version is sung by Mohd Rafi and the female version has the voice of Sharda. Jeetendra is lip syncing in the voice of Rafi Saab in the male version whereas in the female version Rajshri is lip syncing in the voice of Sharda. Both of them are seen in the picturization of this song where we could see the lovers ‘complaining’ about each other for ‘trapping in love’ and simultaneously also reminding that one will not be able to forgot them easily.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

We are into September. The month has begun with on an auspicious note with the arrival of the elephant-headed god, Lord Ganesh or Gajanan or Vighneshwar or Ekdanta or Vinayak or Ganpati- different names for the same god. For which Atulji had posted a “Ganpati Bappa Morya” song. The birthday list for September began with the ‘pouring out of a true fan’s feelings for his idol post’ on Sadhana by Sudhirji.

Here is my post to wish my favourite actor on turning a year older. He has been out of the country for the last year undergoing treatment for the dreaded C. Though out of the country he has been in public eye with constant reports of how he is recovering and that he is expected back in the country in the not-so-distant future. I am wishing Rishi Raj Kapoor on his 67th birthday. May he return to the pink of health and continue what he does best – give us lots of entertaining movies like his last few – “Mulk” (2018) directed by Anubhav Sinha which was poles apart from his “102 Not Out” directed by Umesh Shukla. He played varied characters in “Kapoor and Sons” (2016), “Besharam” (2013), “Patiala House” (2011), “Agneepath” (2012), “Do Dooni Char” (2010), “Student of the year” (2012), – post his decision in 1999 to stop trying to play the romantic lead we have seen Chintu (as his is fondly called) in different avatars. He must be the only actor from the 70s and 80s (other than Amitabh of course) to be considered for playing near-central characters which are not necessarily young.

Now for a few words on today’s song

It is from a 42-year-old movie. It has been on the air-waves and all the music channels of television ever since. And it falls right in the category of “how come this song was not posted earlier?”. But then we will find many of Chintu’s songs eligible for this category and our blog will always have fodder for posting :). The last time I heard this on radio was, may be last week, when I was driving to the airport in Mumbai (my brother was dropping me) or driving home from the airport with my son after touch down at Bangalore (that means twice on the same day). That is how frequently the song gets played. Then on entering the house I found my husband surfing channels and again this song. And next day morning doordarshan played it on their weekly musical “Rangoli”. So that made it 4 times in 24 hours and am I complaining about the number of repeats? No, not at all!! Why? Because I like the elements that the maker of the movie has put into the song. In fact, the maker is known for putting that kind of elements in the whole movie and almost all his movies.

Here I am talking of Shri Manmohan Desai and his habit of showing us incredible, illogical and unbelievable things in his movies, and how the audiences have lapped those up with eyes closed. Remember the blood donation scene in “Amar Akbar Anthony”? The song sequence in “Mard” has a tiger escorting the mother towards a boat so that she can cross to the other bank where her son is singing in the temple. Unforgettable.

Today’s song has the eternal mother – Nirupa Roy – escaping from the clutches of Jeevan and Ranjeet (they were a team in the 70s). She is shown running towards an open-air temple where we have Chintu singing a qawwali in praise of Sai Baba. The mother comes in crawling (tired after all the running and falls that she has had enroute) moves slowly towards the Baba’s idol unseen by the devotees present in the temple. Just as Chintu sings the line – “tu bichhadon ko milaaye, bujhe deepak jalaaye” we see two tiny specks of jyot (light of the diyas) emerge from the Baba’s eyes and enter the lady’s eyes – here I must mention that the lady is blind too, a result of an accident at the start of the movie. And now she can see three kids beckoning her – on the Baba’s smiling face. Such chamatkaars (magical happening) used to be Manmohan Desai’s forte. The song or qawwali comes to a close and she declares to whoever is ready to hear that “ab mein dekh sakti hoon” (I have my vision back); I pity all the eye doctors of that time, I am sure they would have prayed to Baba that they don’t go out of business. 🙂

So today on the occasion of Chintu a.k.a Rishi Kapoor’s birthday let us wish him health and happiness through this chamatkaari song that was written by Anand Bakshi, sung by Mohd. Rafi and composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. Incidentally 3rd September was the 80th birthday of Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma – Pyarelal of the music director duo Laxmi-Pyare. Let us wish him too health and happiness.

As the blog turns 11 today, we can celebrate the first step in the double digit age milestone.  Numerilogically, 11 means 1+1=2 . Does this mean second stage of second phase ?  Or 11 simply means gyarah number ki bus.  Mumbaikar’s know that gyarah number bus means ‘to walk on two feet’.  Walking walking we have reached the 15000 plus figuratively.

Flashback related to this song. . .  My first day in college :

Coming from a girls only Urdu medium school, trepidation crowding the mind, how will I fit in and all that.  Admission was done, fees paid whether I wanted to study Commerce or not, it was a done deal.  Backtracking from a path already taken was a no no… in the family.   It was a good reputed college of Mumbai, my elder sister was happy that at least I got a good college bit more away from the usual Urdu medium crowd, than she had managed.  She had changed streams from Science (which she was very keen to do) to Commerce, at the last moment, just to avoid going to a college (not so good) which was very close to home and right next to the school.

Nobody in the family expected me to do well in Xth as my math was very week.  In the surprised euphoria of me doing well in SSC, the decision was taken to try for the good college, a little away from the residence, involving commute by bus. My elder sister had a big hand in convincing the parents. So no 11 number ki bus for me, rather real BEST buses.

I remember the day of my admission. Two days after the SSC results my father took my elder sister and me to the college. After the procedure was completed, while going back home, my sister had a brain wave of watching a movie, to celebrate my admission to the college and also my 15th birthday. I have said in an earlier post that my elder sister has a great sense of occasion.  My father dropped us to the theatre, waited to get the tickets and left for his office.  The movie was ‘Ab Aayega Mazaa’ (1984) with Anita Raj and Raja Bundela.

So, first day of college @ 12 noon, the class started to fill up.  Some of us girls found each other, sat in a row separate from the boys.   Actually now what is known as a column, was a row in the class room. First period happened to be of English.

The lady lecturer asked all of us to introduce ourselves and talk about interests hobbies etc.  One of the boys said he like to sing and the lecturer having found a ‘bakra’ was no going to let go. So the boy ‘marta kya na karta’ sang this song in the class:

The song as it is, is unforgettable, and with it this event of my first day of college is attached. Our college consisted of a motley crowd of upper, middle and lower crusts’s girls and boys.  It had an ‘Urdu society’ with a Parsi Professor heading it and having its own notice board.  Yes, the notice board was a great source of prestige during those times 🙂 .

The present song post is an almost sufiana song, a critically acclaimed song from the 2006 film ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’.  Very unusual situation for a spectacular song, composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.  There are three singers namely Shankar Mahadevan, Carlisa Monterio & Shafqat Amaanat Ali.  Javed Akhtar is one of the lyricists. There is a Wikipedia page dedicated to this song.  (I Wonder – do all songs have a page like this? )   Carlisa Monterio is the female singer who has penned the lines “Love Will Find A Way” as per the page on Wikipedia. I call this song almost sufiana, because it gives that feeling when one listens to the audio only.

It is picturized on Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee, who are married to Priety Zinta and Abhishek Bachchan respectively. The two are also seen planning their respective wedding anniversary celebration, while meeting up from time to time at spectacular locations in Philadalphia, USA. They are both unhappy with their spouses and are still trying to continue in those marriages. Movie characters are rather fickle, not usually seen to be serious about their commitments. No doubt that divorce is sometimes the only way out of an abusive / real bad marriage.  What is real bad and little bad, sort of can be worked at, is again relative. It is commendable that some civilized societies decided to reform and allow divorce as a permitted practice during 20th century. It was hailed as a step towards better rights for women.

Marriages and divorces in films are no mirror for realities. From what I have observed of bad marriages, one partner may be a major cause of discontent, but both partners suffer. Being the chief cause in a bad marriage doesn’t in anyway alleviate the personal sufferings. Parting ways in civilized manner should be a choice, but only if there is no way of reconciliation.

Also, because marriages are made in heaven, as human beings and social animals, we have a duty to safeguard this institution.  Husband and wife’s is the primary relationship on which family is based and develops as a unit, it is the root of the family tree.

So this is a celebratory song for the 11th anniversary of the blog, and song no. 2 of the Mitwa trilogy.  Ideally this would have been the 3rd and final song of the trilogy, but since the Anniversary is here, this song is the one I choose to post.

It is human nature that on every important occasion and event in life, we recall all the people who had ever crossed our lives and made a difference to it. I had a similar experience during the last year. I felt like I wanted to get in touch with people from way back as far as my childhood. I met people who were our neighbours when my daughter was born. I wanted to invite all those who knew her when she was very little and had showered prayers on her when she was not even aware of those blessings. Sometimes we lose touch with people as they move away or we move away. People who were neighbours and our kids used to play together. All of them had touched our lives, affected us in a good or bad way. Mostly in the essential goodness of human nature it was well intentioned.

For us working women, there is this space in the heart for those who looked after our children when we are away at work. Some such people, neighbour and acquaintances, I was able to contact and invite for the wedding. One of such who were neighbour of my parents and distantly related to my father, attended my daughter’s wedding with her extended family. Sometimes the bonds of shared memories and events in life transcend all constraints of time and distance. When that aunty came on stage to meet the bride and groom, that moment the day of my daughter’s birth flashed in my eyes.

Early in the morning that day the aunty was there to see us off when I was leaving for the hospital. Later on my daughter was born in caesarean section. That evening she came to see us in the hospital. I remembered talking to her about my daughter and the scary experience when the doctor told us that she cannot find the baby’s heartbeat which resulted in caesarean section. I started crying and she also started crying and comforting me. I also remember telling her that all I want from the Almighty now is that “mere bachche ka naseeb achha ho”.

A few weeks after the delivery I had high fever and suffered an epileptic fit. My daughter was a few weeks old, and my mother who had not seen anything like this thought I was dead. She says she kept looking at me and my daughter and wailing. Thankfully, I survived the fit with the timely help of doctors in the neighbourhood and basic first aid given by neighbours. Even during this time this aunty and her family was there on hand to lend a helping hand any which way.

Actually, the above memories had a trigger. I had a five day training schedule in the second week of April. During the training we were made to listen to all the same routine work procedure, rules and regulations, which we have been finding, using and following since day one 🙂 . Actually these procedures are all basically based on common sense and logic, I feel. Difficulty comes when something out of the ordinary crops up then we have the facility of looking up in the proper book and finding the instructions to deal with the situation in the appropriate manner.

During the training one day, a fellow participant suffered an epileptic fit, while the session was going on. A friend of her said that it happens to her from time to time. With the first aid, which thankfully some ladies knew, she was all right after a while. But all this reminded me to my experience of which I personally have no recollection. I know only what I was told afterwards. Seeing it happening to another person is actually more scaring.

The training got over on Friday just in time to enable me and my husband to leave for the trip to Rajasthan as planned on the Saturday. Since this was a first time for us, we had a lot to cover, see and enjoy in one week. It was not enough certainly with so many placed to see. We managed to see quite enough to want do the touristy thing again sometime and see the rest of the places. With so many historical places, forts, palaces and museums etc. it really is the tourists delight as Avinash ji has said in his post – “Mhaare Rajasthan Maa. . .“. I was really delighted to see the various red stone carved palaces and embellishments and some of those inlay work in ‘Sang-e-marmar’ is also visible in places. I have not seen too many such historical places so far, but I was able to detect some superimposition inside the monuments and outside the museum or palace areas. Sadly that is modernity or commercialisation for you. There is an influx of shops and touristy restaurants too, which might be commercial necessity for all I know.

You see the historical monuments are not humans and have no sense of self preservation. From what I learnt most of those places are private property and the owners are free to utilise them. The most well preserved buildings have been converted to star hotels. Good for them as they become commercially viable and will survive longer. At least the superbly carved Mehrangad Fort is a World Heritage site and deservedly.

In a palace shop in Rajasthan I saw a bottled ‘Mitti Ki Khushboo’ fragrance. ‘Mitti ki khusbhboo’ bottled and patented:) . I heard a guide saying that ‘when the first rain drops fall on the earth, this is that mehek”. Indeed…. we should get ‘Shameem’ also in the bottle one day I hope. After all hopes and aspirations are totally free of cost.

Since the day this trip was planned and looked like it will finally happen, I have been remembering the song – “Nainon Mein Badra Chhaaye“.

Without actually going to Udaipur it is possible to visualise it through these songs. I came back from the place humming this song. The panorama surrounding the lake still looks exactly the same as is seen in the song. That is something at least. Since than I have found another song from ‘Mera Saaya’ (1966) – “Nainon Waali Ne Haaye Mera Dil Loota” featuring the scenes of Lake Pichchola of Udaipur. This is no exaggeration, the lakes and surrounding Aravali range is real beautiful site.

I found a song which is like revisiting the places /forts and music and sounds of Rajasthan in the film ‘Ham Dil De Chuke Sanam’ (1999). The majestic Mehrangadh fort is visible in some frames in the song. This amalgamation of folk and classical music is composed by Ismail Darbar and lyricists is Mehboob. The singers are Ustad Sultan Khan, Shankar Mahadevan and Kavita Krishnamoorthy. Quite a ‘bhaari bharkam’ trio what with the heavy voices and names :). In the video of the extended song many members of the cast are seen, notably the late Zohra Sehgal. Vikram Gokhle, Salman Khan and Aishwarya are singing it on screen.

Last word: What I brought back from Rajasthan is the sights and sounds of the locals talent and motivated enough in preserving the originality of the folk music and songs. I want to write more about Rajasthan, but this post is quite long now, so will keep the rest of my thoughts for some other post.

This song from the film Suhaag  (1979) has been waiting in my drafts for a long time now. It is a group song based on Punjabi folk and a popular one at that.

It so happened that when I saw Peevesie’s Mom’s post yesterday on Rekha’s birthday, got an idea in the mind to do a post for Amitabh & Rekhas birthday together with a song of both of them.  There are a lot of songs featuring these two as a couple yet to be posted in the blog.

Somehow I  thought of the song “Naam Re. . . Sabse Bada Tera Naam, O Sheronwaali” from Suhaag, as a trio celebration of Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha’s birthdays plus Navratri.  But when I looked up the movie in the list, this song is already posted by Peevesie’s Mom in 2016. So that choice got ruled out.

Further yesterday was blue day for Navratri, there was a photo session of all ladies in the office, which is the norm all over nowadays in Mumbai offices at least. A colleague made a collage of those photos and put it on the status of the office ladies whatsapp group. It so happened she had mistakenly included one group photograph from another office.

When I pointed it out to her, she said “galti se ho gaya re. . .” . I asked my husband if there was a song with the word ‘galti‘ , he said there was no such song but there is a song with the word ‘bhool‘,  e.g. “Hum Se Bhool Ho Gayee Hum Ka Maafi Dai Do” (‘Ram Balram’, 1980). I remembered the song “Hum Se Ka Bhool Hui Jo Ye Sazaa Hum Ko Mili” (‘Janta Hawaldar’, 1979). But since the song from ‘Ram Balram’ has both Rekha & Amitabh I shared the link to that song in the group. I am appreciated for thinking of a song at the drop of a hat, since we have a Hindi film song for all moments and occasions. I have reliable help in this endeavor, what with my husband being a filmy buff, YouTube etc. 🙂

So back to the song – today is yellow day and in this song at least Parveen Babi can be seen in full yellow, sunny splendour. And it has both Rafi  & Asha Singing for Amitabh & Rekha.  Asha Bhosle in giving playback to Parveen Babi too and Shailendra Singh is doing the honours for Shashi Kapoor. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist for this song composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. Amitabh Bachchan is in disguise in this song to hide his identity from friend Shashi Kapoor, which is uncovered at the end of the song by Shashi Kapoor. Overall a colourful and enjoyable song to suit a celebratory occasion.

This bhangra song is filmed in the old Blighty’s Hyde Park – London, if I am not mistaken.

As I had said in one of my earlier articles that Seasons and Festivals also trigger some musical memories, and we already have many songs for such occasions.

Songs that bring back memories…

I have very fond memories of celebrations of Janmashtami in our colony we were staying then when I was growing.

I remember that bhajans/songs would be played on loud speakers since morning and among the many topical (Hindi/Marathi)songs played, the following songs associated with this festival got permanently engraved in my mind:-

Songs/bhajans would start since morning. That would be regularly interrupted by announcements about timings of ‘Pooja’ and ‘Prasad’ so that nobody missed them. 🙂

Then people would also be informed about the ‘Dahi Handi’ programme to be held near the Temple Complex which was an important part of this festival.

We children would eagerly wait to watch the ‘matki-phod’ and enjoy the excitement and also arranging similar ‘dahi handis’ on a ‘smaller’ or ‘very smaller’ 🙂 (if we compared it now) scale around our quarters.

And, of course, for us children the other main attraction was the ‘gopal kaala’ (Prasad specially prepared on the occasion of Janmashtami.

It was very exciting and thrilling experience to watch the seniors participating in the ‘Dahi Handi’ then. The excitement and thrill is still there even today when the programmes are held around every Janmashtami or watching the happenings in news or live on TV nowadays.

(And so when I get connected with this blog I had shared all these songs in 2012 itself, except the one from ‘Johny Mera Naam-1970’ which was already there posted on 30.06.2012.

The song from ‘Naya Din Nayi Raat-1974’ was posted on 05.09.2015, and I hope to present the remaining one from ‘Maalik-1972’ too on the blog, in future…

As I said may be there were other filmy/non-filmy songs and bhajans. But the above songs continue to grow with me and are pure nostalgia for me.
Today’s song that I am presenting herewith is full of this excitement and captures the joy and thrill in right spirit of the ‘Dahi handi’ or ‘matki fod’ during the celebration of ‘Janmashtami’ …

This song is from the 1974 movie ‘Badlaa’.

‘Badlaa-1974’ was produced by R.C. Kumar for ‘Century Films, Bombay’. It was directed by Vijay, who also wrote the Story of this movie. It had Shatrughan Sinha, Moushumi Chatterjee, Ajit, Johny Walker, supported by Padma Khanna, Alka, Shetty, Mohan Choti, Maruti, Bhagwan, Keshav Rana, Ram Mohan, Sabina, Mohan Sherry, Kamal Deep, Mac Mohan, V. Gopal, Johny Bakshi, Desh, C.S. Dubey and Mehmood.

Nirupa Roy, Arun Irani, Anwar Hussain, Paintal, Sujit Kumar, Shyama, Madan Puri, Harindranath Chattopadhyay, Iftikhar, Sudhir, Raj Mehra, Randhir, Jayshree T, Meena T, Shefali and Kajal make a guest appearance in this movie.

Screenplay for this movie was written by Jagdish Kanwal and Vijay. Jagdish Kanwal also wrote the dialogues of this movie. Editing for this movie was done by S. Chakravarty who was assisted by Herman Topno.

This movie had five songs penned by Anand Bakshi and composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Minoo Puroshottam gave their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie was released with restricted viewing (A certificate) and passed by Censor Board on 07.03.1974.

I had not watched this movie so cannot say much about this movie and its performance at the box office then. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on the movie and its songs.

The picturization of this today’s song seems to be inspired by the picturization of the ‘iconic govinda song’ ‘Govinda aala re aala …zara matki sambhaal brijbaalaa’.

This song was shot by Director Manmohan Desai on the streets of Bombay. This very popular song was at rank 31 in the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of that year in 1963.

The next Janmashtmi song that was created after the song under discussion was from ‘Khuddaar’ in 1982 – ‘mach gayaa shor saari nagri re’ sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. Though it was popular that time it didn’t make to the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’. However two other songs from the same movie were there in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ and one of them ‘angrezi mein kehte hain ke’ was at number one.
I was under the impression that this song ‘mach gayaa shor saari nagri re’ has already been posted on the blog, however this is yet to be posted.

That brings us to the today’s song which stood at 22 in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of that year in 1974.

The instrumental musical interludes played in between this song will remind listeners the other song composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal – ‘shaadi banaane ko Keshto chalaa’ from ‘Chaacha Bhatija -1977’

Let us now enjoy this wonderful song (may be forgotten now) and celebrate ‘Janmashtami’ reminding ourselves of the many aspects of Lord Krishna …

The pun reminds me of a friend in college – he was the class jokester, always ready with something startling to put the group into fits of laughter. One day he solemnly announced that after good amount of research he has concluded that Ram (Lord Ram) was a native of Rome. So we asked him how he arrived at this dignified conclusion. He replied – because लिखने वाला लिख गया है – हे रोम रोम में बसने वाले राम. Needless to say, it was the prime joke of that day.

And for this post today, Anand Bakshi has surely started this song on a very punning note :).

With that we come to the next episode of this series. The film ‘Spy In Rome’ from 1968 comes from the banner of Adarshlok, Bombay, and is directed by Adarsh (I am sure nobody could have guessed that 🙂 ). The list of actors includes Dev Kumar, Jaimala, Rajendra Nath, KN Singh, Madhumati, Lata Sinha, Meenakshi, Brahm Bhardwaj, Caroline King, Khurshid, Shanti, Arya, Hercules, Fazal, and Bhatia etc.

The film carries four songs. All songs are penned by Anand Bakshi and the melody creator for this film is the duo of Laxmikant Pyaarelal.

The song is picturized in the beautiful and historic city of Rome. We can see Dev Kumar and Jaimala strolling through the streets of Rome, introducing the audience to the many architectural splendors of this culturally rich city. Back then in 1968, this would have been a real treat for the moviegoers.

Although the video is fairly good, I am not able to get a clear decision whether Dev Kumar is lip syncing this song, or that this song is playing in the background, as the two ‘spies’ are making their way through the city. I request other readers to help make this determination.

With this song, the film ‘Spy In Rome’ makes its debut here on our blog. Lets see how fast we get this film to Yippeee status.
