Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990) -9 (1989)
—————————————————————

Welcome all to this post covering Pancham’s music during the decade of eighties or 1981-1990.

This post comes after a long gap of almost five months.

In today’s post we move on to Pancham’s music in 1989.

Let us first take a look at the number of movies with music by R.D. Burman during the period from 1981 to 1988.

Sr.No. Year No. of movies with music by Pancham
01 1981 20
02 1982 15
03 1983 19
04 1984 17
05 1985 18
06 1986 07
07 1987 09
08 1988 06

In the year ‘1989’, six Hindi movies with music by R.D. Burman were released.

Here is the list of these movies.

Sno Movie Title Director Lyricist Date of Censor Certificate Status on the Blog
1 Aag Se Khelenge Bhaskar Shetty Anand Bakshi 30.08.1989
2 Bahuraani Manick Chatterjee Anjaan 18.12.1989
3 Dost K. Murali Mohan Rao Indeevar 23.06.1989
4 Joshile/Joshilay Sibte Hasan Rizvi Javed Akhtar 10.01.1989
5 Jurrat David Dhawan Anand Bakshi 12.12.1989 1 of 6 songs posted
6 Parindaa Vidhu Vinod Chopra Khursheed Hallauri 31.08.1989 4 of 7 songs posted

For today’s presentation I have selected a song from the movie ‘Joshilay’.

“Joshilay-1989” was directed by Sibte Hasan Rizvi for ‘New World Enterprises’. It had Sunny Deol, Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Satyen Kappu, Alok Nath, Prema Narayan, Rajesh Puri, Rama Vij, Bharat Bhushan and Master Jatin Khurana, Harjeet Walia, Hanif, Agarwal, Bhiku Verma, Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Hemant Mishra, K.L. Shetty, Deepak Kejriwal, Satish Kaushik, Kumud Tripathi, Ashok Sharma, Ami Asthana, Ravi Shastri, Mahendra, Arvind, Deep Dhillon.

This movie introduced Rajesh Vivek as ‘Jogi Thakur’.

Story, screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Javed Akhtar.

Editing of this movie was done by I.M. Kunnu.

Javed Akhtar also wrote the lyrics of the songs in this movie. As mentioned above music of this movie was composed by R.D. Burman.

“Joshilay” or “Joshile” was passed by Censor Board on 10.01.1989.

This movie has five songs as per details given below. (Though, the LP Vinyl cover of this movie mentions the following six soundtracks. It mentions the song ‘na jaa jaane jaa’ two times, but it is not clear if these are two different versions.)

SNo Song Title Singer
01 Na jaa jaane jaa Asha Bhonsle, R.D. Burman
02 Dhar dham chak lag gayi Asha Bhonsle
03 Joshilay shahzaade hain Kishore Kumar
04 Dhak dhak jiyaa kare Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar
05 Dhola dhol manjira baaje re Asha Bhonsle, Suresh Wadkar
06 Na jaa jaane jaa Asha Bhonsle, R.D. Burman

As we can see in the above table Kishore Kumar, R.D. Burman, Asha Bhonsle, Suresh Wadkar and Usha Mangeshkar had given their voices to the songs in this movie. (The title of the movies doesn’t mention the name of Suresh Wadkar in the list of singers for this movie.)

The story of the movie is based on the regular ‘dacoit destroying the family- then the revenge by the children who were orphaned then and later grow up with only one aim of taking revenge for their parents killings.

Shekhar Kapoor was supposed to direct the movie initially but it seems that he left the movie in between which was later taken over for direction by the producer Sibte Hasan Rizvi himself.

I have not yet watched this movie.

Let us now move to today’s song which I have selected for its music specially. The prelude music of this song would remind many the prelude music of ‘chunri sambhaal gori…’. Today’s song is based on the ‘folk song of Rajasthan’ ‘dhhola dhhol manjira baaje re’.

It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Suresh Wadkar and on screen it is lip-synced by Sridevi and Sunny Deol respectively. Also seen in the picturisation of this song is Anil Kapoor, Meenakshi Sheshadri and many others.

Enjoy this ‘folk-musical’ from Pancham for the lovely music, singing by Asha Bhonsle and Suresh Wadkar, and Sridevi’s steps in this musical composition.

With today’s song ‘Joshilay-1989’ makes its debut on the blog…

Today 13th December’2020 is the thirty-third ‘Remembrance Day’of actress Smita Patil(17.10.1955-13.12.1987).

The news of Smita Patil’s sudden demise this day 33 years at the age of just thirty-one came as a shock to millions of movie lovers like me. .

I was staying at Parli-Vaijnath (1985-88) at that time and I remember the next morning when I visited the ‘music recording center’ to meet my friend, he was very sad, and so were many other movie-goers and music lovers who were mourning Smita Patil’s sad demise.

As a tribute to her, here is a song from the ‘1981’ movie ‘Dil E Naadaan’.

“Dil E Naadaan-1981” was directed by C.V. Sridhar for ‘Sri Sanjay Chitra, Madras’. S.M. Sundaram was the executive producer of this movie. It had Rajesh Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Smita Patil, Jayaprada, Agha, Shivraj, Keshto Mukherjee, Jagdish Raj, Raj Mehra, Bina Pathak, Ashalata, Kavita Kiron, Vanita, Ashok, Umesh Sharma, Lalita Kumari etc. Om Prakash had done a guest appearance in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 11.12.1981 and maybe it was released in the theatres in early 1982, that is why many sources mentioned this movie as a movie of ‘1982’.

This movie had five songs including two songs which had two-parts. Lyrics for all the songs were written by Naqsh Lyallpuri.

Music for this movie was composed by Khayyam. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Suresh Wadkar had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Here is brief about this story as given on ‘Wikipedia’ and reproduced below;

Vikram (Shatrughan Sinha) and Anand (Rajesh Khanna) are best friends, brought up by their mom (Dina Pathak). Anand is an orphan who was adopted by the family as a child and he has never been given the impression that he was an outsider. Vikram and Anand are owner and manager respectively, of an advertising agency in Bombay. Both work for the same organization & love the same woman, Asha (Jaya Prada).
In the organization, Sheela (Smita Patil) works as a deputy to Anand and is in love with him, though Anand is unaware of this. Sheela continues to harbour love for Anand even after finding out he loves Asha, whom Sheela is friends with and also lives with. Vikram frequents a bus stop daily on his way to office, where he always sees Asha. He instantly decides to propose to her. Vikram discloses to Anand that he wants to marry a girl but does not reveal her name. Meanwhile, Vikram’s mother looks for suitable girls for their marriage and declares that she would marry both her sons together on the same day.

Sheela becomes confused as to whether she should continue to love Anand in spite of knowing that Anand and Asha love each other. One day, Sheela meets Vikram and as they talk, she says things that indicate she feels lonely and has lost her loved one to another. The next day, Sheela apologizes to Vikram and asks for a 10-day leave. She decides to go to her hometown to forget Anand. However, Asha joins her, as she learns that Anand is going there as well on a business trip. On a rainy day, Sheela is alone in the house when Anand arrives to meet Asha. He learns that Asha is attending a friend’s wedding, but as no train is available for returning, Anand is forced to stay the night. In the midnight, Anand starts feeling cold due to the weather, so he starts drinking. After a few drinks, he starts seeing Sheela as Asha. Despite knowing he is wrong …

(Here the first part of the song happens in the back ground and it is picturized on an actor and actress I am unable to identify with …)
Well, the movie moves forward and…
The next morning…
(reproduced from ‘Wikipedia’)

Anand realizes what has happened and writes a letter to Sheela, asking her to keep the incident a secret for life, as he wants to marry Asha only. However, Asha comes across the letter first and becomes aware of what happened between Sheela and Anand in her absence. She then decides that, as she respects her friendship with Sheela, she will sacrifice her love for Sheela and make Anand marry her instead.
The rest of the story shows what will happen to Vikram and Anand’s friendship after this incident. Will Anand marry Sheela? Will Sheela agree to marry Anand? Will Sheela make Asha marry Anand? Will Vikram marry Asha?

I will not reveal when the second part of the song (few lines only) happens (this part is also played in the background of Rajesh Khanna and Smita Patil seen on screen) in the movie to keep intact the interest of the readers who wish to watch this movie or have not watched this movie so far.

I remember I had watched this movie (I think in early 1983) and liked it then very much for the performances of Rajesh Khanna, Smita Patil, Jayaprada and Shatrughan Sinha.

The songs of this movie are also very nice and I had the good fortune to be able to share them here on the blog.
So far, following four songs from this movie have been covered on the blog;

SNo. Song Title Posted on
01 Chaandni raat mein ek baar tujhe dekha hai 28.09.2012

03 Agar leta hoon tera naam 11.07.2018
04 Dil tera hai jaan bhi hai teri piyaa 19.08.2020

With today’s song all the songs of this movie have now been covered on the blog and it joins the ‘list of movies- all songs covered’.

I could not find the video of this song and only audio is presented in today’s post.

Let us now enjoy today’s song …

Blog Day : 3570 Post No. : 14307

Hullo to all in Atuldom

My post today (27 april 2018) should be read after reading what our dear Rajaji wrote last year in this post of his. In there he has poured a lot of love for the handsome actor- producer- (and lastly) a politician. He has spoken for all the fans of Vinod Khanna.

It is simply unbelievable that a year has passed since this most charming actor passed away. I remember how shocked I was on reading the news on our WhatsApp group that day. The news must have broken on the news channels about noon, around the time when Vividh Bharati – All India Radio’s commercial channel- starts their farmaishie filmy gaane etc. I used to have this habit of listening to this programme, with headphones on, as I commute around (I have stopped it since). Now that day, I was most happy with the content of the programme as every single song was from a Vinod Khanna movie and all of which I simply love. It occurred to me that those songs were being played as a tribute to the departed artist, only when I read all the WA messages on returning home. It was very very saddening. But then life is like that, and apparently Vinod was ill for sometime before his death. And as Rajaji has mentioned in his post last year, there were photographs being shared on social media of a rather sick Vinod, but I always thought that must be a look for some forthcoming movie. But that was not how it was to be.

I cannot forget the look on his face when he is listening to the recorded message from his wife. And then the pain on discovering that his wife has been unfaithful- in Gulzar’s song less wonder “Achanak”. Can remember how he smartly outwits Jeetendra’s father as villain in “Anokhi Ada”. Thinking of him singing “nainon mein darpan hain darpan mein koi dekoon jise subaha shaam” with Saira Banu on a cycle in “Aarop”.

After having made his debut in 1968 through Sunil Dutt’s “Man Ka Meet” and doing roles of secondary characters as Manoj Kumar’s friend in “Purab Aur Paschim”; Shammi Kapoor’s younger brother who loses track of ‘good and bad’ in “Jaan Pehchaan”; an inspector out to nab the smuggler (Rajesh Khanna) in “Sachha Jhootha”; and a few villainous characters we saw him as a confused educated unemployed man in “Mere Apne” which was followed by “Achanak” and a small blink and miss role in “Parichay”- all of which were made by Gulzar. No mention of Vinod Khanna is complete without thinking of the “Jabbar Singh” he played in “Mera Gaon Mera Desh”- he was unforgettable, he is unforgettable, we can’t forget him.

How can we forget him- when the radio plays “priye praneshwari” or “koi hota jisko apna” or “bambai se aaya mera dost” or “ruk jaana nahin tu kahi haarke” or “darbaar mein uparwaale ke” or “bhaagi re bhaagi re brijbala kanha ne pakda rang dala” or “lagi aaj saawan ki phir who jagi hai” and all the other famous and not so famous songs featuring him.

Though his pairing with Amitabh was always enjoyed we cannot forget that he paired well with Feroz Khan, Shatrughan Sinha, Vinod Mehra, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Sunil Dutt etc. As I was writing this post I wondered if he has never worked with Sanjeev Kumar and I saw that among yesterday’s posts is a song from “Chowkidaar” which had Sanjeev Kumar and VK is also there. The later year heroes Govinda, Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan etc also co-starred with him playing an elder brother or father figure to them. He has done more than two movies each with most of the heroines of his era; be it Leena Chandavarkar, Bharati, Saira Banu, Zeenat Aman, Hema Malini, Rakhee, Parveen Babi, Reena Roy, Shaban Azmi, Rekha, Yogita Bali etc. and in his second innings Dimple Kapadia, Meenakshi, Madhuri, Madhavi, Jaya Prada, Sridevi etc. God, he had a good career and we were well entertained by him.

“Kudrat” was one of the movies where he co-starred Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini. It also had Raaj Kumar and Priya Rajvansh in important roles. It was directed by Chetan Anand and had rebirth as its theme. It had great songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and Qateel Shifai and R D Burman was the music director. The song with this post is written by Majrooh and sung by Suresh Wadkar and Asha Bhonsle. It is a typical pahadi folk song performed by local dancers and as is the norm in Indian films the stars in the audience are drawn in to dance and shake a hip or leg with the performers. So, we can see Vinod Khanna starting the dance and trying to drag Hema Malini into it. This is followed by Aruna Irani (who plays the missing link between the two births of the main characters) Rajesh Khanna and Priya joining in. The song is meant to transport Hema into memories of her past birth and give her hints of link between Madho and Paro, Vinod catches Hema staring at Rajesh Khanna. And from here the story moves towards what the purpose of the movie is – getting justice for Madho and Paro (Rajesh and Hema) for the crime done to them by Raaj Kumar, father of Priya in this movie.

Thinking of the handsome Vinod Khanna today.

Yesterday evening Vividh Bharati was playing a whole lot of songs penned by Gulzar in the last two decades. And I was like “Oh My God! What a selection to post on the upcoming occasion of Gulzar Saab’s birthday”. But then I had this problem of zeroing into the right song for the blog as each and every song was a WOW! She feels that they did some great work together in “Beta”, “Ram Lakhan”, “Kishen Kanhaiya”, “Khel” etc. These two acted together for the first time in “Tezaab” and Anil Kapoor has said in some interview a long time back that he was so impressed by the (then) young and hard working Madhuri that he recommended her to Subhash Ghai for the then under making “Karma”. And it seems they even shot a whole song after which Ghai thought that it was not wise to waste such a lot of talent for a guest appearance song and took her on for his next “Ram Lakhan”.
