Hullo Atuldom

July 31st. Important date for lovers of Bollywood sangeet. This date-41 years ago- music lovers lost a singer who was a wonderful human being. He went by the name Mohammad Rafi.

We used to have pages and pages written about the greatness of this legend’s voice, singing style, kind-heartedness, etc in the pre-internet era. Then various people took up blogging as a passion and any blog on Bollywood and its music will definitely have atleast a few posts on this great singer. AM I COMPLAINING? NO NOT AT ALL. Because as our very own Rajaji has said in many of his posts ‘one cannot tire of writing or reading about Rafisaab and his persona’.

Similarly, the music channels on satellite television and FM radio will try to outdo each other in playing popular songs sung by Rafisaab. Again, I am stating a statement of fact and not complaining. Because any fan of Bollywood music can never tire of hearing and humming songs sung by this legend who had a smooth and soothing voice.

I have never tried making a personal list of favourite Rafi-songs as I fear that I might miss out on some gem which I have always loved. Maybe my list will start with ‘yaahhooo’, or ‘tel maalish’ on one day and another day may see me start listening from ‘chaand mera dil’ or ‘chura liya hai tumne jo dil ko’. Probably I may add a less heard song like ‘mann mora baawra’, ‘tumne mujhe dekha’, ‘hai duniya usiki zamaana usika’ and by the time I finish listening to all the songs in the list I may have reached ‘kaan mein jhumka taal pe thumka’ and ‘kitna pyaara vaada’ or ‘vaada karle saajna’ with a few soulful numbers in between. I think I should also clarify that the songs that I have mentioned are only a sample of the kind of songs I love to hear and not an exhaustive list.

Now I was looking for a song that would also help me wish a yesteryear actress on turning 74. She was born just as India was gaining Independence from the British rule. She was born in Mumbai to parents of Irani origin. Her sister (Malika) also was an actress and married to Randhawa (brother of Dara Singh); I think these are hints that point towards Mumtaz Askari famous as Mumtaz. Mumtaz’s journey in the movie industry was a tough one starting as a child in 1958, going on to teenage roles in early 60s. As an adult her first role in an A-grade movie was in O P Ralhan’s ‘Gehra Daag’ where she played one of Rajendra Kumar’s sister. Years later, when she was a commercially successful heroine, she was cast as Rajendra Kumar’s heroine in “Taangewala” which released in 1972.

“Taangewala” was a Dimple Films’ presentation and directed by Naresh Kumar meaning it was Rajendra Kumar’s home production. It had songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and tuned by Naushad. Mohd. Rafi, Mukesh, Asha Bhonsle and Lata mangeshkar were the playback singers used. The cast included Sujit Kumar, Bhagwan, Kanhaiyalal, Mohan Choti, Kumud Chuggani, I S Johar, Kaamini Kaushal Mehmood Jr. in addition to Mumtaz and Rajendra Kumar.

It had about seven songs of which the blog has four. Today we shall have the fifth one. Unfortunately I have not seen the movie or been able to lay my hands on a video link. My guess is this Asha- Rafi duet is picturised on the lead pair.

Here is Wishing Mumtaz health and happiness (heard that she is a Cancer survivor) and remembering the one and only Rafisaab who could do justice to any song and was sincere towards every composition that he sang making every song a gem.

This should be Rafi- Asha Bhonsle duet number 547.

Song-Aisa phanda maare gori dil pe tera pyaar (Taangewaala)(1972) Singers-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

aisa phanda maare gori dil pe tera pyaar
ke phaansi pe latke jiyara hamaar
ke phaansi pe latke jiyara hamaar
saajan tere nainon se jab naina hue chaar

jaane kab
jaane kab sunegi tu dil ki pukaar
ke phaansi pe latke jiyara hamaar
o aisa phanda maare gori dil pe tera pyaar
ke phaansi pe latke jiyara hamaar

tere bina bhatke yeh chadhti jawaani
paagal meri bindiya paayaliya deewaani
o tere bina bhatke yeh chadhti jawaani
paagal meri bindiya paayaliya deewaani
aisi bhi kya
arre aisi bhi kya aayi hai jawaani pe bahaar
kaleje mein dans gaye bichhua hazaar
saajan tere nainon se jab naina huye chaar
kaleje mein dans gaye bichhua hazaar

ab to leke chal kahin saathi mere mann ke
chal mere angana dulhan meri ban ke
ho ab to leke chal kahin saathi mere mann ke
o chal mere angana dulhan meri ban ke
doli leke ae ae
doli leke aaja re tu kal mere dwaar
kaleje mein dans gaye bichhua hazaar

ki phaansi pe latke jiyara hamaar
kaleje mein
dans gaye bichhua hazaar

ke phansi pe latke jiyara hamaar

Dilip Kumar – The Legend (1922-2021)
——————————————————

Since last two days I have been watching the various videos on whatsapp and on the net and also read some articles on the net. I have tried to see and absorb as much of the information I could about the events after, when the thespian is no more. After all is said and done, I have tried various tacks on how to approach this tribute to the method actor, who some call the “Marlon Brando” of India, without the ferociousness. But I find a ferocious, peasant turned dacoit in ‘Ganga Jamuna’ and a fractioned rebel prince Salim who is equally ferocious in protecting his Anarkali. The work on the silver screen was a very important part of the personality, but by no means it was the whole personality.

The best of Dilip Kumar, the actor and star was over, well before I grew up. But the admiration for his qualities as a screen performer and as a person conscious of his social responsibilities, was an inculcation process in my conscious mind. It has not happened overnight. These are small snippets of information, fed to my mind and stored away. Many incidents and events heard and read about long ago are surfacing in the memory. The trigger is the passing away of Dilip Kumar on 07/07/2021.

I was preparing the posts thinking of some old songs which have not been posted in the blog yet, preferably a song sung by Rafi sahab, writing a para here about this, and there about that, in yahoo mail, in gmail, on my office desktop and my laptop. This is not the way I prefer to do a post, but it was happening like this in this instance, as I was not able to assimilate the thoughts and lacked the drive to concentrate on the topic, maybe.

Then, I had divine help in the shape of a TV news show. I am pretty impressed with the contents of the particular show aired on 07/07/2021, with the byline – An era ends with Dilip Kumar’s death. It is very much close to my own feelings on this occasion, so I am reproducing some parts of the text of the show in hindi – trying to do verbatim translation is beyond me at the moment.

“Apni gair haazri mein iss se adhik haazir koyi kya ho sakta hai ke aap unhen alvidaa kehte waqt iss tarah se yaad kiye jaa rahe hain, jaise woh laut kar aaye hon. Yeh desh jo har waqt hindu-musalmaan ke beech nafrat ki deewar par chal raha hotaa hai, uss desh mein aisa ek hi shakhs thha jo Dilip Kumar bhi thha aur Yusuf Khan bhi. 1947 ke vibhajan rekha ko wo jis aasaani se paat diya karte thhe, bahot kam logon mein waisi quwwat hoti hai. Unn ka ek makaan phoolon ke shehar peshawar mein aaj tak hai. Unn ka ek makaan paison ke shehar Mumbai mein bhi hai. Aaj hindustan ne jitna khoya hai, utna pakistan ne bhi khoyaa hai.

Pichhle saal sitamber mein jab pakistan ke patrakaar Shiraz Hasan ne apne twitter handle par Dilip Kumar ke puraane makaan ki tasveer sajhaa ki, tab Dilip Kumar ne apne twitter handle se jawaab diya ke Peshawar mein sabhi se guzaarish hai ke mere pushtaini makaan ki tasveeren den. Phir to tasveeron aur videon ka taantaa hi lag gayaa. Peshawar ke ‘Qissa-Khwaani’ bazaar mein unn ka makaan hai. Dilip Kumar ne apni aatma katha mein likkha hai ki aaj bhi wahan ki khushbu, rang aur mausamon ki yaaden taazi hain. Kanpwa dene wali sardiyaan yaad hain. Unhen yaad hai Wahabbat Khan ki masjid huaa karti thhi. Iss bazaar ka naam qissa khwaani bazaar iss liye bhi padaa ke yehan vyapari apne qisse sunaate thhe aur doosron ka qissa sunte thhe. Kise pataa thha ke unn tamaan anaam qisson ke beech itna bada qissa niklegaa jis ka naam Yusuf Khan se badal kar Dilip Kumar kar diya jaayegaa. Do naamon ko ek saathh jeena aur khabron se bhari iss duniyaa mein tthag ki jagah behadd imaandar aur shaaleen shakhs ke roop mein dekhaa jaanaa, yeh bhi apne aap mein ek qissa hai, jis ka bazaar aaj unn ke jaane ke baad sajaa hai.

Apni aatma khathha mein unhon ne likkha hai ke bazaar mein aag lagi thhi jis waqt unn ki paidaaish hui thhi.
“Dilip Kumar – The substance and the shadow” aap ko unn tamaam chaukhaton tak le jaati hai, ye dikhaane ke liye ke ek kalaakar apne wajood se alag ho kar ek bada kalaakar nahi bantaa hai.
Waise unn ki aatma katthaa ke shuruaat se le kar akhir ke panno par, ghar ki dadi, ammi, phuphi aur didi ke qisse bhare pade hain. Maaon aur behnon ke beech ek kumar bada ho raha thha, pata chalta hai ke khaandaani aadmi thhe.
Unn ke hone aur na-hone ko unn ke abhinay ki katranon ko nikaal kar tukde tukde mein jiye jaa rahe hain.
Lekin Saira Bano ke liye Dilip Kumar ek video clip bhar nahin thhe. Unn ke dukh ki dahleez tak koyi nahi pahunch saktaa.
Ham ne baat peshawar ke makaan se shuru ki thhi. Bambai ke Anjuman Islam school mein padhne lagte hain Dilip Kumar. Vibhajan se pehle aa gaye thhe. Lekin school ki chhuttiyon mein unn ka Peshawar aana jaana raha, angrezi ki kavitaayen sunaane aur unn ki daad lene ke liye.

1930 ke dashak ke baare mein Dilip Kumar ne likkha hai ke yehaan tab hindu chai, muslim chai, hindu paani, muslim paani milaa karta thha.

Dilip Kumar apne bachpan ko kandhe par rakh kar chalte thhe. Ek qissa hai ke jab akhbaaron mein chhapa ke bombay mein tram band hone waali hai, to unhen dard huaa 31/03/1964 ko hazaaron logon ne dadar aur parel ke beech chali uss aakhri tram ko bidaai di. Dilip Kumar likhte hain ke agar wo Dilip Kumar naam ka star na hote aur Yusuf Khan hi rehte to uss akhri tram mein zarur safar karte. Hazaaron logon ne antim tram ko vidaayi di thhi. Unn ki yaadon mein jitna peshawar thha utnaa hi bombay thaa. Koyi abhinetaa apne shehar ko unn daftaron se yaad karta hai, koyi Dilip kumar hai jo apne uss ki mohallon bason aur pedon se yaad karta hai. Yahin par unn ka makaan hain, yahin unn ko Juhu qabrastaan mein suprud-e-khaak kiya gayaa. Badi sankhya mein aam log iss shaandaar abhineta ko vidaayi dene aaye. Unhen maaloon hai yehan Dilip sahab dafan ho rahe hain. Unn ka ek makaan, jism ka har ek qatra hindustaan mein hai, lekin ek makaan peshawar mein bhi hai jis ke baahar unn ki yaad mein ek poster lagaaya gaya hai.

Is interview mein aap inhen bolte suniye. Saamne koyi script nahi hai lekin aap parde ke Dilip Kumar aur asli jeewan ke Dilip Kumar mein farq nahi kar sakte. Patrkar Sunil Sethi ne NDTV ke liye Dilip Kumar ka interview kiya thha. Puraana interview hai. Angrezi mein iss interview ko aap bhasha, aur usse baratne ke lehje ke liye bhi suniye. Unhenn bolte huey sunne se bhi lagta hai ham ne jin i’laaqon ko, rawaayaton aur lafzon ko baant diya hai. Dilip Kumar jab bolte thhe to woh saara kuchh ek aisi zameen se aaya lagtaa thha, jis ka batwaara kabhi huaa hi nahi. Unn ka bolna uss i’laaqe ka ek mukammal chehra thha, jise aap bharatiya up-mahadweep kehte hain.

“nishaan-e-imtiyaaz’ ko le kar huey vivaad ke waqt, unhon ne ye kahaa thha ke 65 saal hindustaan mein rehne ke baad mujhe apni wafadaari saabit karni pad rahi hai.

Unn ka ghar iss waqt ghamon se bhara huaa hai. Unn ki adaakari ham sab ke hisse mein maujood hai. Dilip Kumar ne cinema mein abhinay ko adhyay mein badal diya, iss liye unhen method actor kahan jaata hai. Mughal-e-azam jaisi film mein Salim ke kirdaar ko baadshahat dene waale Dilip Kumar kam samay mein dekhna ya unn ke baare mein samjhana bahot mushkil kaam hai.”

The show goes on to talk about Dilip Kumar’s philanthropic acts. I had meant to write a bit on this facet of his personality, as I found that the Wikipedia page on him is not mentioning this part of his life. The show than goes in detail about how his biography was written and published, and what were his specifications about writing about his personal life and relations with other female stars with whom he was linked romantically.

I would like to read the book and see what he writes about his equation with Madhu Bala and what went wrong with his second marriage to Asma Rehman.

I have read the letter hand written by Dilip Kumar in urdu, to the editor of ‘Shama’ which is part of a book. The beauty of the handwriting and the dignity in the sentences, conveying his outrage, subtle yet firm, that he will not tolerate any such inferences towards his personal matters, is to be read to be believed. I have not read that much of Urdu over the years, as I could have, but the conviction about the ‘shaaistagi’ of the language, written and spoken is never in doubt. The letter vindicates my convictions about urdu, and reassured me that Urdu is a deserving heritage ofvast populations across the world. I am still talking about Dilip Kumar’s cultured, educated, wise and dignified persona.

One dialogue from Mughal-e-azam :

“ye zakhm nahi phool hain Durjan. Aur phoolon ka murjhaana bahaar ki ruswaayi hai.
Suno,
ye qaatil hi nahi dildaar bhi hai,
yeh shaakh-e-gul bhi hai talwaar bhi hai”

Yes. In classic Urdu, sentences do begin with ‘aur’.

Going back to Dilip Kumar’s acts of charity and his commitment to social causes, I know it for a fact that he was a partner in many such deeds and was a patron and supporter of educational institutes, orphanages etc. Dr.Is-haq Jamkhanawala (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishaq_Jamkhanawala) from Belgaum was a close friend of Dilip Kumar. These two friends had been involved in many charity projects, which can be verified. In fact Dilip Kumar visited Belgaum in early 80’s accompanied by Saira Bano for inaugration of an educational institute. I have a photographe where Dr. Is-haq Jamkhanawala also can be seen alongwith another illuminous person, a doctor from Belgaum. (Photo attached).

Saahir Ludhianvi says in his inimitable way that:

duniyā ne tajrabāt o havādis kī shakl meñ
jo kuchh mujhe diyā hai vo lauTā rahā huuñ maiñ

His stature and standing in the film industry as well as the country ensured that he is a blessed and deserving of the honour of State funeral given to him. A real ‘badaa aadmi’ in the way he was blessed with the affections and respect in this world. And bigger the stature and the power bestowed in this world, the bigger is the test of the character. The toughness of the test is directly in proportion to the worldly blessings. By all accounts he seems to have fared well in this test, as far as we can see, rest all is with Allah(swt), who is the best of judges.

Lata Mangeshkar says this in her tribute:

“Yusuf bhai has gone leaving his younger sister behind. His death seems like the end of an era. I am unable to comprehend anything, I’m extremely sad, speechless, he gave me many memories and left. Yusuf bhai has been unwell for the last many years. He couldn’t recognise anyone, at such time, Saira bhabhi left everything and took care of him day and night. She had no other life. I bow down to such a woman and I pray for Yusuf bhai’s soul to rest in peace,”

What is a better celebration of this legendary actor, multi-lingual and multi-dimensional personality, than a song from the magnum opus “Ganga Jamna’ which he produced, wrote and said to have ghost directed? I am presenting two song snippets from this film.

Shakeel Badayuni-Rafi-Naushad is the team, whose association with Dilip Kumar is again a stuff of legends. Some enthusiasts can write a thesis on this topic. There is a female voice in the longer snippet, which sounds like Rajkumari Dubey, but I cant be sure. I am positive that it is not Lata Mangeshkar and sound different from Shamshad Begum.

My own favourite song from “Ganga Jamuna” is:

Nain lad jayi hain
to manwaa maa kasak hoibe kari
prem ka chhutiye patakha to dhamak
hoibe kari

The film and songs are definitely worth revisiting and so is the thespian, Gulfaam, the originial angry young man, and so much more.

06/11/2020 – 35th Remembrance day of Sanjeev Kumar

The song I am presenting today as a tribute to Sanjeev Kumar, the versatile actor, comic, romantic, angry young man, character actor and sometime villainous, actor and above all the Thakur of ‘Sholay’, is from the film ‘Love and God’ (1986). Sanjeev Kumar was born on 9th July, 1938 as Harihar Jethalal Jariwala , at Surat. His filmography lists 171 films from 1960 to 1994. He was just 48 years old when he died in 1985, though he had been doing the roles of old man since 70’s. In ‘Aandhi’ he is the patient hotelier husband of Suchitra Sen, caught between the ambitious father Rehman and his dutiful daughter. I have seen that film 4 decades ago, it is time to refresh the memory.

Who can forget the doctor in “Mausam”, singing “chhadi re chhadikaise gale meinpadi”. He was also one of the dedicated “Shatraj ke Khiladi”. The inspector in this, the lawyer in that plus the doctor in ‘Silsila’. Wah, come to think of it he was also one of the actors who had a profession. Be it a ‘darzi’ or a ‘domestic servant, nothing was too lowly for him. Who can forget the novelist in “Anamika”. It will be interesting to know if he played the role of a cook, or a librarian(possible), a professor, or a watchman, waiter etc.

Before I forget, he has the distinction of doing the role of Jaya Bahaduri (Bachchan)’s, husband, hero, friend, father, father-in-law etc.

The film “Love and God” was based on the story of Laila Majnu and Sanjeev Kumar eventually played the role of “Qais”(did Qais have a profession?) here, after the film was shelved and revived several times. Guru Dutt was originally cast in the role of ‘Qais’. The much delayed film by K. Asif was finally released in 1986 after even Sanjeev Kumar had died.

The song presented here is again a prayer (Du’aa) song, written by Khumar Barabankwi, composed by Naushad. Singers are the ever divine Mohammed Rafi Sahab and Lata Mangeshkar with Chorus. This du’aais very carefully following the protocol of prayer, in the sense, it starts with the devotion and how the Allah’s greatness is visible everywhere. Then first stanza talks how I am aggrieved and I have come to you, believing in you, with the hope in the heart. Second stanza has the appeal that all is in your hands and you will do as deemed best, you are the all merciful and save me from humiliation. Last stanza is the lament that I can’t bear this desolation, give the whole universe of others if you wish but grant me my one wish, i.e. my mohabbat.

Commemorating Naushad Sahab’s 100th birth anniversary on 25th December 2019 :
————————————————————————————
Naushad Sahab’s journey as a music director is an astounding journey of 65 years beginning from 1940 to 2005. This is as in active working career. Born in Lucknow on 25th December, 1919, he completed his journey of the mortal existence on 5th May, 2006, in Mumbai. He is described as a composer, music director, film producer, writer, and a poet. Also credited for being the major contributor towards incorporating Hindustani classical into film music right from the 40’s.

I have just now found a portion of the thumri extracted from the movie “Paakezah” where it plays in the background in one of the scene’s. I have often seen references to the lost thumris of “Paakeezah”. They all have been used in the film in different scenes.

This particular thumri is having a famous ghazal by Mir Taqi Mir ‘dekh to dil ke jaan se utthtaa hai …..ye dhuaan sa kahan se utthtaa hai”. This ghazal has been immortalized by many singers in recorded version too. One of those versions by Mehdi Hasan was used in the background of one scene in Sai Pranjpe’s “Chashme Bad-door”. That also is a one memorable scene, where the friends sharing accommodation in Delhi, sharing much more including their cigarette’s are Farooq Shaikh, Rakesh Bedi and Ravi Baswani, while this ghazal is playing in the background. The full ghazal’s link is here.

I am giving the link here as those interested can see the full ghazal and can try and understand the spirit of it through meaning of words and terms also.

In the stats page, there are 3 songs credited to Mir Taqi Mir, so this should be the fourth. Two songs namely Patta patta boota boota from “Ek nazar” and dikhaayi diye yoon ke bekhud kiya I could connect with Mir Taqi Mir. Third one I couldn’t find.

He finds mention in this Mirza Ghalib Sha’ir:

Rekhte ke ek tumhi ustaad nahi Ghalib
Kehte hain agle zamaane mein koi ‘Mir’ bhi thha
Actually in the portion of this ghazal used in the film is only two sha’irs with words in the matla’a changed. Actual words are like this :
ishq ik ‘Mir’ bhari patthar hai
kab ye tujh na-tawaan se utthta hai

Here is the word “na-tawaan”. I have just recently written a hindi poem, which has this word “na-tawaan”, which I simply must share here.

Lyrics

Dekh to dil ke jaan se utthtaa hai ae
Ye dhuaan sa kahaan se utthtaa hai
Ye dhuaan sa kahaan se utthtaa hai
Ishq ek ‘Mir’ bhaari patthar hai

Bojh itnaa kahaan se utthtaa hai

Blog Day : 4178 Post No. : 15354

Yesterday (25 december 2019) was the birth centenary of Naushad (25 december 1919- 5 May 2006). The special occasion called for a post but my internet connection let me down and that day ended up becoming a dot day- the third such day in the year.

According to my calculations Naushad had composed music for 601 songs in 64 Hindi movies.

61 out of these 64 movies are represented in the blog. The first four movies where Naushad was the music director are “Prem Nagar”(1940), “Darshan”(1941), “Maala”(1941) and “Nayi Duniya” (1942). All available songs of these movies are covered in the blog but still some songs (unavailale as of now) are not posted so these movies are unYIPPEED. After that, each and every Naushad movie beginning from “Sharda”(1942) till “Ganwaar”(1970) are already YIPPEED in the blog ! Moreover, two more movies viz “Aaina”(1974) and “Dharam Kaanta”(1982) are also YIPPEED.

The only Naushad movies (apart from the four movies of 1940s), whose songs are not fully covered in the blog are “Paakeeza”(1971), “Taangewaala”(1972), “My Friend”(1974), “Sunahra Sansaar”(1975), “Chambal Ki Raani”(1979), “Love and God”(1986), “Aawaaz De kahaan Hai”(1990), “Teri Paayal Mere Geet”(1993), “Guddu”(1995) and “Taj Mahal”(2005).

Overall 535 out of 601 Naushad compositions are already showcased in the blog.

On this occasion, here is a song from “Taangewaala”(1972). This song is sung by Rafi. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad.

The song is picturised as a Tanga song, with Rajendra Kumar playing the Taangewaala and driving the taanga holding a small child his arms. It is very risky, according to present day safety standards. Rajendra Kumar would get fined heavily and his tonga driver licence cancelled by traffic police if he was to operate in present day India. 🙂

This song is an appropriate song for the occasion because Rafi too had his birth anniversary on 24 december, one day prior to Naushad’s birth anniversary.

Lyrics

Thhap thhup thhip ki taal pe mera ghoda chaal dikhaaye
lipat lipat ke taange ke sang raah guzarti jaaye
Thhap thhup thhip ki taal pe mera ghoda chaal dikhaaye
lipat lipat ke taange ke sang raah guzarti jaaye

chhail chhabeela ghhoda hai
chaal chale hai saajan ki
chhail chhabeela ghhoda hai
chaal chale hai saajan ki
peechhe peechhe taanga hai
doli jaise dulhan ki
peechhe peechhe taanga hai
doli jaise dulhan ki
zaalim yoon lehraaye ke jaise
koi sharaabi jaaye ae ae
Thhap thhup thhip ki taal pe mera ghoda chaal dikhaaye
lipat lipat ke taange ke sang raah guzarti jaaye
kaaka jee
o maamaa jee
ho zara bach ke

mandir koi jaata hai
masjid se koi aata hai
mandir koi jaata hai
masjid se koi aata hai
ye dilwaala sabko hi
manzil tak pahunchaata hai
ho ye dilwaala sabko hi
manzil tak pahunchaata hai
taanga mera pyaar bhara dil
jo chaahe aa jaaye
Thhap thhup thhip ki taal pe mera ghoda chaal dikhaaye
lipat lipat ke taange ke sang raah guzarti jaaye
hurr

Blog Day : 3829 Post No. : 14834

Today’s song is from the film Nai Duniya-42. The film was made by Circo productions of Chimanlal Trivedi and was directed by A R Kardar, with music by Naushad Ali.

Naushad was my favourite composer. Having come up from scratch to the zenith of popularity and fame, he had put in lot of hard work in early days of his career. Naushad may or may not be the best Composer the HFM ever had, but he certainly was a good example of Rags to Riches story of Filmy Duniya. He rose from the footpath and became one of the most successful composers ever in Hindi Films. Added to this was his good nature, Lucknowi Tahzib and hard work. This made him a man with least enemies ( competitors-yes, but enemies-No ) and on whose name alone films were sold during his peak period.

Naushad was the only composer on whom 6 Documentaries were made. A student Ms.Mala Sinha secured her Ph.D., making Naushad as a subject of her research. Starting with Rs.40 a month, Naushad was the First to demand and get Rs.ONE LAKH per film and was also the first composer to build his own Bungalow in a posh locality of Bombay with a Music room for doing rehearsals.

When he was on the Top, a trailer of film “Dastaan”-1950 featured Naushad on the screen showing crowds shouting ” 40 karod mein ek hi Naushad “. Such was his saleability that A R Kardar, who had always used Naushad for his own gains, was forced to make Naushad his partner in producing films under their banner ” Musical Pictures .

Naushad was undoubtedly the most successful composer HFM ever had. Out of the 65 films that he did in Hindi, 50% had celebrated jubilees. This is a record unmatched so far. His tally was 3 Diamond Jubilees ( Rattan, Baiju Bawra and Mughal-e-Azam ), 6 Golden Jubilees ( Mela, Andaz, Deedar, Aan, Mother India and Gunga Jamuna ) and 23 Silver Jubilees (Station master, Sharda, Namaste, Sanjog, Pehle aap, Kanoon, Keemat, Sanyasi, Anmol Ghadi, Shahjehan, Natak, Dard, Anokhi Ada, Dillagi, Dulari, Babul, Dastaan, Jadoo, Diwana, Udan Khatola, Kohinoor, Mere Mehboob and Ram aur Shyam ).

Naushad was the First winner of Filmfare Award in 1954 for a song in Baiju Bawra. The Award Ceremony was held in Broadway Theatre, Bombay. Ironically, it was bang opposite this Theatre that Naushad had spent his struggling days and Nights on the Footpath ! Naushad recieved several cherished Awards like Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Padma Bhushan, Lata Mangeshkar award, Maharashtra Bhooshan award, Sahitya and Natak Academy award, Saraswati Award, the IFJ and BFJ awards and scores of other awards.

His first 4 films ( Premnagar-40, Kanchan-41, Mala-41 and Darshan-41), however, were with unimpressive music. From the film Sharda-42, his Luck started changing and then there was no looking back at all for the next 25 successive years. This is exceptional talent and unbelievable Luck.

I see 2 reasons which made him successful. One was his hard work. He never ever compromised on rehearsals and however big the singer was (read Lata) he/she had to come to his Music room for rehearsals on a song for at least 7 to 8 days. He never recorded a song unless he was satisfied fully. Secondly, Naushad had tremendous faith and liking for Indian Classical music, which he used extensively in his songs. Almost all his songs had a classical base and he proved that classical music can be made entertaining for the masses, who could not make a difference between 2 Ragas, but would like his simple and hummable tunes. Very rarely his songs were difficult to hum or sing in the bathroom. He always selected singers based on their suitability for the songs.

After a draught of success, Naushad entered the year 1942. Nai Duniya was his 5th and final film before he began his Success Marathon of jubilees. Out of the 3 films in 1942, his other two films Sharda and Station Master celebrated Silver jubilees. It was only this film-Nai Duniya-which did not celebrate a Jubilee, but this film was no less important and it was a Milestone in the history of HFM.

It was in this film that noted actress singer Suraiyya sang her First recorded film song,as Baby Suraiya ( Boot karoon main polish). I have been seeing that there is a lot of confusion about the Debut song of Suraiya as a playback artiste.

Some people claim that the song ‘ Boot karun mai polish’ from film Nai Duniya-1942 is her first song as a Playback singer and some people claim that the song ‘ Panchhi jaa peechhe raha hai bachpan mera’ from film Sharda-1942 is her debut song as a playback singer.
Naushad himself,in one of the interviews , had said that the Nai Duniya song was her first recorded song as a playback singer.
However, Naushad saab is only partly correct. No doubt this song was recorded earlier ( No. N-26055) and the Sharda song was recorded later (No. N-26099).

Both the films were censored in 1942 only. However film Sharda was released first on 23-1-1943 at Minerva Talkies in Bombay, whereas Nai Duniya was released only on 24-4-1944 at Majestic Talkies in Bombay.

Therefore, the Debut song of Suraiya, as a Playback singer is undoubtedly the Sharda song, namely ‘ Panchhi jaa, peechhe raha”.
Only when a song is released on screen , it is called a Debut song, irrespective of when it was recorded.
The dictionary meaning of “to Debut” is- to perform in public for the first time. Since Sharda song was shown to public first, it becomes Suraiya’s Debut song as a Playback singer.

The song from Nai Duniya-“Boot karoon main polish” at best can be called as “the first recorded song for playback”. The Debut song ‘Panchhi jaa peechhe raha’ was posted by Atul ji on 21-2-2011 here.
( Release dates received with thanks from shri Harish Raghuwanshi ji)

This was also the first movie in which Kardar and Naushad came together. Kardar,in fact, was so much impressed with Naushad’s work style, that he decided to employ Naushad, in Kardar Productions ( which he was about to start soon), as a paid composer for Rs. 500 pm. Naushad,on his part, was very happy that he got into a job, which would ensure a sure income every month.

Later this pair gave film after films successfully. Naushad worked with Kardar for 14 films, excluding films made under the banner of Musical Pictures-in which Naushad was an equal partner with Kardar. Nai Duniya was a Circo production ( Cine Industries Recording Company, owned by Chimanlal Trivedi) and Kardar was only a Film Director for this company. Soon this Circo came up for sale. Kardar bought it to start his production company. He also established a studio in the premises. Kardar made a contract with Naushad for 5 years, but he was allowed to work outside, though the first priority would be Kardar films. Even otherwise also,Naushad restricted his films to 2 to 3 per year,as his style of working needed a long time for rehearsals.

Naushad became a household name all over India after Rattan-44 However he worked in 4 films that year (Rattan,Geet,Jeevan and Pehle Aap.) Similarly in 1949 also he did 4 films (Dillagi, Andaz,Chandni Raat and Dulari). He did only one film each in a few years like for instance- in 1940-Premnagar, 45-Sanyasi, 53-Udan Khatola, 57-Mother India, 58-Sohni Mahiwal, 61-Ganga Jamuna, 62-Son of India, 63-Mere Mehboob , 64- Leader and in 70- Ganwaar.

Nai Duniya-42 was the First ever film produced by Naushad. Later,of course, he made few more films, though he was never at ease as a Producer. For Nai Duniya-42, singer G M Durrani was his chief Musical Assistant. The film cast was Shobhana Samarth,Mazhar Khan, Jairaj, Wasti, Azurie, Jeevan, Ram Awtar etc. Not many readers may know much about old actor Mazhar Khan ( there was another Mazhar Khan in 70s/80s). He was one of the most versatile actors who shifted from Hero’s roles to character roles easily. In Hindi films, the name Khan has always been present in plenty. From Wazir Mohd.Khan of Alam Ara-1931 to Shahrukh Khan of today, there were more than 50 Khans acting in Hindi films.

Mazhar Khan was born in 1907 in the princely state of Dhar in M.P. After Matriculation, he joined Police force due to his build and height, but soon he was fed up and resigned. He straightaway headed for Bombay looking for work in films. Director Durga Prasad Mishra took him in Imperial studio and he did about 19 Silent films starting with Challenge-1929. When Talkie films started, he went to Calcutta, joined New Theatres and worked with K L Saigal in ‘Subah ka Sitara’-1932. For East India Film co.,he did ‘ Ek din ka Baadshah-33’and Raat ka raja-34 in which he did 8 roles in the film. After a few more films, he returned to Bombay and worked in Ranjit and Minerva Movitone films. His career best role came in 1941 in Shantaram’s Padosi, in which he did the famous role of Hindu Friend Thakur, while Gajanan Jagirdar did the role of his Muslim friend. In the prevailing tense communal atmosphere in the country those days, this film was hailed as a milestone depicting life long friendship of a Hindu and a Muslim.

In 1942, he turned Director and did Meri Duniya-42, Yaad-42, Badi Baat-44, Pehli Nazar-45, Dil ki Duniya-49 etc. His noteworthy films were Noorjehan-32, Bharosa-40, Padosi-41 and Ulzan-42. This role was that of a Blind singer-like K C Dey. His last film was Usha Kiran-52. He died on 24-9-1950, before its release.

When you hear today’s song, first time after 1940,you will find that there is melody and Taal in this song. As if there was a transformation, from 1942 onwards, Naushad’s music underwent a sea change. No wonder,in those days people found these songs had easy tunes and a certain melody in them. Naushad’s journey towards success and popularity began with 1942 films.

Film Nai Duniya had 11 songs. 8 songs are already discussed here. Today’s song is the 9th song. This film had 3 songs exclusively by chorus. This was something most unlike Naushad’s style seen in later years. Naushad would have songs sung by 2-3 or even 4 singers( as in Mother India-57) at a time ,but at no time were there any chorus songs in his films exclusively. May be in this film he tried to emulate Anil Biswas who had a penchant for chorus songs in his films. In one of my earlier posts, I have discussed about the chorus songs of Anil Biswas. After this film, something happened to Naushad and suddenly from his next film Sharda-42, he started giving Hit films. These are some of the unexplained wonders of Hindi films. Here is the song….

“Aaina”(1974) was produced by N Selvaraja and L Duraiswamy and was directed by K Balachandar for Kalakendra Films production. The movie had Mumtaz, Rajesh Khanna, A.K.Hangal, Nirupa Roy, Rita Bhaduri, Ratan Chopra, Lalita Pawar, Jayasudha, Adil Aman, Manmohan Krishna, Anjum Savera, Vandana Rane, Yasmin, Baby Seema, Kalpana, Jagdish Raj, Polson, Madhukar, Brahmachari, Suraj, Prem Kumar, Master Paresh Kumar, Master Jaganath, Madan Puri, Suresh Chatwal, Jagdeep etc in it. This movie had Neetu Singh and Dharmendra in special appearances. The film also had Kamal Hasan in it who was also one of the dance directors of the movie.

The movie had five songs in it. Three songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the fourth song from “Aaina”(1974) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Jaan Nisaar Akhtar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad.

The song is picturised as a wedding ritual song where Mumtaz, playing a saheli of the bride is seen teasing the bridegroom. While I can identify a few actors seen in the picturisation (such as Nirupa Roy), I am unable to identify most of them. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify them.

PS-Several months later, I realised that this song is a multi part song according to HFGK. The song begins as “teri dulhan badi jaadoogarni” sung by Vani Jairam. Then the part sung by Asha Bhonsle appears.

So this song basically is a multi part song.

With this, all the five songs of the movie get covered and the movie joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

“Teri Paayal Mere Geet”(1993) was produced by Prem Lalwani and directed by Rehman Naushad. The movie had Govinda, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Shakti Kapoor, Kadar Khan, Bharat Bhushan, Johny Lever, Nivin Nischol etc in it.

The movie had a theme that was more 1960s than 1990s and it came as no surprise that the movie had few takers at the box office.

The movie had eight songs in it. Here is the first song from “Teri Paayal Mere Geet”(1993) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by S P Balasubrahmaniam. Hasan Kamal is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad.

The picturisation shows Govinda lip sayncing this song while staying hidden from the views of Shakti Kapoor and Meenakshi Sheshadri.

With this song, “Teri Paayal Mere Geet”(1993) makes its debut in the blog.

Lyrics

sabhi milne ko milte hain
magar kab dil se milte hain
mohabbat karne waale to
badi mushqil se milte hain

tumse ek arz hai tum agar maan lo

baat sabse karo pyaar humse karo
tumse ik arz hai tum agar maan lo
baat sabse karo pyaar humse karo
pyaar humse karo
pyaar humse karo o o

sabse milkar yoon hi muskuraate raho
bijliyaan si dilon par giraate raho
sabse milkar yoon hi muskuraate raho
bijliyaan si dilon par giraate raho
apna deewaana sabko banaate raho
apna deewaana sabko banaate raho

Blog Day : 3578 Post No. : 14326

Today (5 may 2018) is the twelfth rememberance day of Naushad (26 December 1919 – 5 May 2006).

Naushad composed just above 600 songs in 64 Hindi movies. 530 songs from 60 of his movies have been covered in the blog. 49 of these movies have already been YIPPEED in the blog. So unlike other music blogs/ radio stations/ TV stations, who play the usual well known songs as always, we in this blog only have 70 odd Naushad compositions from 15 movies to chose from, seeing that we do not repeat a song in the blog.

Seeing that all Naushad movies of 1950s and 1960s have already been YIPPEED, we only have Naushad songs of 1970s and beyond left to be covered.

Here is a song from “Aaina”(1974) as a tribute to Naushad. This movie was a Kalakendra Films production. It was produced by N Selvaraja and L Duraiswamy and was directed by K Balachandar. The movie had Mumtaz, Rajesh Khanna, A.K.Hangal, Nirupa Roy, Rita Bhaduri,Ratan Chopra, Lalita Pawar, Jayasudha,Adil Aman, Manmohan Krishna, Anjum Savera,Vandana Rane, Yasmin,Baby Seema, Kalpana, Jagdish Raj, Polson, Madhukar, Brahmachari, Suraj, Prem Kumar, Master Paresh Kumar, Master Jaganath, Madan Puri, Suresh Chatwal, Jagdeepetc in it. This movie had Neetu Singh and Dharmendra in special appearances. The film also had Kamal Hasan in it who was also one of the dance directors of the movie.

The movie had five songs in it. Two songs have been covered in the blog.

This song, the third from the movie, is sung by Lata. Jaan Nisaar Akhtar is the lyricist.

The song is picturised as a radio song on Reeta Bhaduri, who is seen singing this song as a tribute to Mumtaz, who plays the long suffering and scarificing bhartiya naari in the movie, as far as I can tell from the picturisation of this song.

The picturisation also shows many other persons, including Nirupa Roy, listening to the broadcast of this song on radio.

Song-Wo jo auron ki khaatir jiye (Aaina)(1974) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Jaan Nisaar Akhtar, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

wo jo auron ki khaatir jiye mar mite
sochti hoon unhen kya mila
wo jo auron ki khaatir jiye mar mite
sochti hoon unhen kya mila
kya mila
kya mila

jaise baadal barasta hua
pyaas jag ki bujhaata hai
aa aa aa
jaise baadal barasta hua
pyaas jag ki bujhaata hai
jaise chandan sabhi ke liye
apni kushboo lutaata rahaa aa
yoonhi tum apna jeevan lutaati rahi
par tumhen pyaar kiska mila
wo jo auron ki khaatir jiye mar mite
sochti hoon unhen kya mila

khwaab dekhe hamaare liye
ek pal bhi agar so gayi ee ee
khwaab dekhe hamaare liye
ek pal bhi agar so gayi
tum ho maa saare pariwaar ki ee
sabki fikaron mein tum kho gayi ee
tum ho ma sare pariwar ki ee
sabki fikaron me tum kho gayi ee
tum na biyahi
na hatho me mehndi rachi
aur na maathe ko teeka mila
wo jo auron ki khaatir
unhen kya mila

ek aurat ho meri taraha
phir bhi lagti ho devi mujhe
aa aa
ek aurat ho meri tarha
phir bhi lagti ho devi mujhe
apna sab kuchh mitaaya magar
ik nayi zindagi di mujhe ae
apna sab kuch mitaya magar
ik nayi zindagi di mujhe ae
har andhere mein jalti pighalti rahi
dil tumhen deep jaisa mila
wo jo auron ki khaatir jiye mar mite
sochti hoon unhen kya mila
kya mila
kya mila

Blog Day : 3463 Post No. : 13899

We are into the last few hours of the day today (10 january 2018). We have covered four songs for today, including one debutant song for the day. It was decided that two more songs would be covered today by Sudhir Ji, and one of them would be a YIPPEE song. But now with less than four hours left for the day, Sudhir Ji seems to have got busy. So I have decided that I will post the YIPPEE song for the day myself and Sudhir Ji may post his YIPPEE post on another day. As it is, I keep a few YIPPEE songs ready with me at any moment in order to live up to our new year resolution of covering one YIPPEE movie song daily.

The movie that I have taken up today is “Dharam Kaanta”(1982). It was a “daaku-drama” produced and directed by Sultan Ahmad who loved producing movies on this theme. His earlier movie on the same theme was “Ganga Ki Saugandh”(1978). “Dharam Kaanta”(1982) had Raaj Kumar, Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Waheeda Rehman, Reena Roy, Sulakshana Pandit, Amjad Khan, Satyen Kappu, Om Prakash, Nazir Hussain, Mukri, Hina Kausar, Nisar Ahmad Khan, Sheetal, Purnima etc in it.

The movie had five songs in it. Four of these songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the fifth and final song from “Dharam Kaanta”(1982) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Naushad.

The song is picturised as a mujra song on Sulakshana Pandit in the location of a Thakur ki haweli. Several characters in the movie, viz. Amjad Khan,Santyen Kappoo, Yunus Parvez , Hina Kausar etc are visible in the picturisation.

This song, one of the last compositions by Naushad can be counted as among the last few known mujra songs from HFM before this genre of songs all but vanished from Hindi movies.

With this song, “Dharam Kaanta”(1982) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Song-Main aisa jhoom ke naachi aaj ke ghunghroo toot gaye (Dharam Kaanta)(1982) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

zaalim tere jahaan ki
har ek rasam chhod di hai
sharm o haya ki maine
zanjeer tod di ee hai ae

maine chhod di kab ki laaj
maine chhod di kab ki laaj
main aisa jhoom ke naachi aaj
ke ghunghru toot gaye
ho o
ke ghunghru toot gaye

maine chhod di kab ki laaj
maine chhod di
maine chhod di
maine chhod di kab ki laaj
mai aisa jhoom ke naachi aaj
ke ghunghru toot gaye
haaye re
ke ghunghru toot gaye

takraayi jo apne dilbar se
dil dhadka mohabbat ke dar se
takraayi jo apne dilbar se
dil dhadka mohabbat ke dar se
baahon mein jo usne gher liya
kuchh kar na saki
munh pher liya
baahon mein jo usne gher liya
kuchh kar na saki
munh pher liya
mohe loot gaya ek chor
padi main kuchh aisi kamzor
ke ghunghru toot gaye
haay re
ke ghunghru toot gaye

kyun aaj zamaane se darna
ruswaayi ka gham bhi kya karna
kyun aaj zamaane se darna
ruswaayi ka gham bhi kya karna
hansna hai ke aansu peena hai
ik raat mujhe to jeena hai
hansna hai ke aansu peena hai
ik raat mujhe to jeena hai
main chali piya ki oar
jawaani aisi hai munhjor
ki ghunghru toot gaye
ho o
ki ghunghru toot gaye

reahta thha jo mere khwaabon mein
tasweer thhi jiski aankhon mein
rehta tha jo mere khwaabon mein
tasweer thhi jiski aankhon mein
baaje hai kahin bhi shehnaayi
main samjhi milan ki raat aayi
baaje hai kahin bhi shehnaayi
main samjhi milan ki raat aayi
main aisi hui behaal
main aisi hui behaal
kuchh aisi uljhi meri chaal
ke ghunghru toot gaye
ho o
ke ghunghru
ghunghru re ghunghru re ghunghru re
ghunghru toot gaye

kuchh der ka ye afsaana hai
bas dil ko yahi samjhaana hai
kuchh der ka ye afsaana hai
bas dil ko yahi samjhaana hai
zanjeer main jis’se ghaayal thhi
duniya ki nazar mein paayal thhi
zanjeer main jis’se ghaayal thhi
duniya ki nazar mein paayal thhi
wo aaj kate zanjeer
chalaaya maine aisa teer
ke ghunghru toot gaye
maine chhod di kab ki laaj
mai aisa jhoom ke naachi aaj
ke ghunghru toot gaye
aa aa aa
ki ghunghru toot gaye
ae o o
ke ghunghru toot gaye
