Post by post analysis of the weekly output – is an exercise that is getting more involved and detailed. As we progress, we are finding newer varieties and newer variations that add on to a now growing list of things to look at and check for. OK, so let us see what insight this week brings in.

Let’s first do the numbers. The challenge analysis and other details are presented in the table below. With one dot day (on 23rd Sep), this week saw as many as 34 posts. Except for one repeat, all songs are from different movies. So, 33 movies got featured that week. As many as 12 films made their debut. And of the 33 films that were showcased that week, 22 films have been yippeee’d over the past 10 years. Of the remaining 11, I am shifting two film to the twilight zone of Conditional Yippeee status, which I had proposed last week. The films are ‘Panchaayat’ from 1958 and ‘Dr Vidya’ from 1962 – I will give more details little later in write up.

I will highlight one change in notation. Last week I had proposed that for the songs which are listed for the film, but which are possibly not available in any format, will be denoted by ‘LFe’ – short for ‘Lost Forever’. Now there is a rethink about this terminology. At least one response to me was that ‘Lost Forever’ is a despairing notation, putting a sort of finality to the issue. So I propose to change this terminology to ‘UT’ indicating that the song is ‘Untraceable’ at least for now.

Two major milestones were announced this week. With the sixth song posted on 20th Sep, 2010, the blog reached the 3000th post. Given where we were at that time, ten years back, this was an enviable milestone in itself. Looking back, it may seem not very significant, on account of where we have now reached. But at that time, breaching the 3000 barrier was a great event. With the same song, we also had the first 1000th milestone for an individual artist. This very same song also became the 1000th song by Lata ji, posted on our blog. This was the first such accomplishment on the blog, for an artist.

We had just one guest post this week. Raja ji has done the post for the 3000th song plus the 1000th song of Lata Mangeshkar.

This week, we see many interesting variations and differences in the information that is available about the songs contained in specific films. Here are the details,

  1. ‘Deewaana’ (1952) – Geet Kosh lists 8 songs for this film. Then the footnote to this film indicates that one more song was recorded for this film in the voice of Shamshad Begum. The inference to be drawn is that this 9th song is an unused song from this film. This song is also available, and has been posted on our blog.
  2. ‘Panchaayat’ (1958) – the gap in information is quite remarkable here. There is one song listed in Geet Kosh that is simply not traceable anywhere. The words of the song are “Main Ye Soch Kar Us Ke Dar Se Utha Tha”. Ah yes, rings a bell. This song appears in the 1964 film ‘Haqeeqat’. I replayed the movie to check, but did not find even a snippet of this song.
    However, viewing the film gave me some good information. The theme song of this film, “Mil Ke Baitho Jodo Bandhan” is a multi part song that appears in the film five times. We have this song on the blog, but we only have the portion that is heard in background as the film titles are being presented on screen. This song recurs on four more occasions later in the film.
    So two updates to this film that must be put on the blog. First, the theme song has to be updated for all the multi part segments. Second, then this film should be declared Conditional Yippeee, because the song “Main Ye Soch Kar. . .”, in all likelihood will remain untraceable, as far as this film is concerned.
  3. ‘Parwaana’ (1947) – Geet Kosh lists 9 songs, whereas we on the blog had added two more which we have extracted from the film soundtrack. One of them – “Balam To Pe Sabar Pade” is a very special song. This is the very last recording of KL Saigal Sb. It is an incomplete recording. However, the director has used this as a background song near the end of the film, by modifying the situations somewhat.
  4. ‘Aaj Aur Kal’ (1963) – Geet Kosh lists 8 songs, whereas in the film there is one more song, actually a qawwaali, in the voice of Shamshad Begum and Usha Mangeshkar. So on the blog, we have one more song than the list in Geet Kosh.
  5. ‘Tu Nahin Aur Sahi’ (1960) – On the blog we have one additional song, actually a snippet that is played at the end of the film. This snippet is not listed in the Geet Kosh.
  6. ‘Dr Vidya’ (1962) – This song list mismatch here is quite confusing. There are seven songs listed in the Geet Kosh, out of which the song a serial no. 2 “Yahi Din Hain Bhanware Mann Arey Tum Nahin Samajhte” is not traceable. It does not appear to match with any other song in the film. And then there are two songs in the film which are not listed in the Geet Kosh. There is a fun qawwaali – “Yoon Hans Hans Kar Dekho Na Idhar”, which is performed on screen by Helen and Prem Chopra. And then there is this romantic song of promises to meet again – “Main Kal Phir Miloongi Isi Gulsitaan Mein”. So we have 8 songs of this film already posted, and there is one still pending whose fate is not known. Possibly then ‘Dr Vidya’ also merits to declared Conditional Yippeee.
  7. ‘Sone Ki Chidiya’ (1958) – This film has 8 songs listed in the Geet Kosh. However, on our blog, we have one more additional song posted, which is essentially a poem rendition.
  8. ‘Doctor’ (1941) – I had mentioned about this film in the previous episode of this series. There is a small bit of confusion in the song list of this film in the Geet Kosh. GK lists 11 songs for this film. This film was declared as Yippeee’d on 29th August, 2014. In that post, Atul ji had written that ten songs of this film are already posted, and the eleventh song was being posted, declaring this film to be Yippeee’d. However, as we examine the lists, there is a bit of confusion that prevails overall.
    For starters, the song “Aai Nit Nai Rut Ki Bahaar” is listed twice in GK, once with Ila Ghosh as the singer, and once with Pankaj Mullick as the singer. This threw me off so completely, that I spent three four days two weeks ago, trying to trace the Pankaj Babu version of this song. Most responses I got from within the circle of collector friends was that this song does not exist. Secondly, the iconic Pankaj Babu song – “Aayi Bahaar Aaj Aayi Bahaar” is not listed in GK. I went over the GK entries in detail, including the addenda and the corrigenda. But could locate no other information.
    After some back and forth discussions, it is concluded that there is an error in the GK listings, in that the song listed in GK at serial no. 11 – “Aayi Nit Nari Rut Ki Bahaar” in the voice of Pankaj Babu, is incorrect, and that the words of this song should be “Aayi Bahaar Aaj Aayi Bahaar”. If this change is made, then the listings can be reconciled correctly.
    There is still one more variation in the GK listing and the blog list. The GK listing shows the two songs viz. “Kab Tak Niraasha Ki Andhiyaari” and “Bhai Jagat Ujiyaari Dekho” as two separate songs. On our blog, these two songs appear in the same post, so essentially the blog list does not show the latter song.

Now a word about the song covered in this post. The film is ‘Zindagi Ya Toofaan’ from 1958. As per the Geet Kosh, this film has 10 songs listed. All the songs come from the pen of J Nakshab, a name that we are also familiar as Nakshab Jarchavi. Music is composed by Nashaad.

The film is produced under the banner of Serafim Pictures, Bombay and is directed by Nakshab Jarchavi, the lyricist. The cast of actors is briefly given as Nutan, Pradeep Kumar, Om Prakash, Minoo Mumtaz, Johnny Walker, and Yakub. The film tells the story about the love of a young man, role played by Pradeep Kumar, for a dancing girl, role played by Nutan. Nine songs of this film are already posted here on our blog. This is the tenth and the final song of this film to come on board.

The song itself is a wonderful expression in words about the exchanges that happen between the lover and the beloved. Each couplet, each line is such a beautiful visualization of that relationship. The video clip for this song could not be located. So it is not feasible to comment on the picturization of this song. Given the music and rendition, one can surmise that this song is presented as a mujra on screen. Expectedly, the song is performed by Nutan and Minoo Mumtaz. Both are dancing girls entertaining the guests, which would include Praeep Kumar and Yakub.

This wonderful ghazal presented as a mujra, is the tenth and the final song of this film to come on board, and we can declare this film to be Yippeee’d now.

OK, so finally ‘Anmol Ghadi’ got yippeee’d this week, on the very first day of the week. And Atul ji, still waiting for you to clear the mystery behind this yippeee.

Once again, a very prolific week, the pace of post updates continues in full swing. Except that one day this week, we scored only a single. But for the rest of the week, it was all sixes with one extra run from an overthrow.

The blog scored 38 posts this week. Of these 38, we had only one guest post for the week – by Santosh Ojha ji. A total of 36 films made their appearance, with two films scoring two appearances each. We had 1 film that reached yippeee status. A whopping 15 films made their debut this week. That is close to almost half the films that got featured that week.  Since that week was done with, of the 36 films featured, 26 films have been formally and fully yippeee’d. Ten of them are still awaiting their numbers to be fully showcased. Given below is the detailed chart for the week. You will notice a new column and new notations today. I will explain them later in this write up.

You may notice that I used the phrase ‘formally and fully’ to qualify the yippeee status of the films. The reason I used this phrase is the following. As we are making progress towards our ideal of bringing on board all the Hindi film songs, we do find ourselves against certain difficult limitations. These have to do with – one, non availability of certain songs, and two, erroneous or missing information about some films and songs. I will highlight these situations as we progressively face them. For this week, here are the difficult situations that I came across.

The first one is the film ‘Mukhdaa’ from 1951. This film debuted on our blog on 16th Sep ten years back. The film has 11 songs, as per the Geet Kosh listings. We have located and posted 9 of them over the past decade. The remaining two are practically untraceable. Firstly, of the 11 songs listed, one was never put on a gramophone record, as the producers planned for and contracted with HMV for only 5 discs, which means 10 songs in all. The song at serial no. 6 – “Dekho Jee Pehli Baar, Kiya Hai Tumse Pyaar” was never released on a gramophone record. Then comes a footnote in the Geet Kosh which states that one record, N36900 was ordered, but then cancelled later on. It never got published, although the songs were recorded. This record was supposed to carry the two songs at serial no. 3 – “Mehlon Ke Rehne Waale Mehlon Mein Hans Rahe Hain” and serial no. 7 – “Poochhiye Na Haal Jee, Palle Nahin Maal Jee”. So that would mean that we should have 3 missing songs and not 2.

But wait, here is one more interesting twist in the story. It seems that after cancelling the publication of the record N36900, the producers went ahead and commissioned one more record, with number N50008. Looking at the huge gap in the series number of the records, it is clear that the latter record (N50008) was ordered much later than 1951. Strangely, this newly ordered record now carried the song at serial no. 7 – “Poochhiye Na Haal. . .” and the song at serial no. 10 – “Jaa Teri Meri, Meri Teri”. This latter song at serial no. 10 was already published and is available as one side of the record with number N36870, the flip side of which carries the song at serial no. 5 – “Neele Se Dupatte Pe Hain Peeli Peeli Dhaariyaan”. The net outcome of these, what I shall call – confusing decisions – is that the song at serial no. 10 – “Jaa Teri Meri. . .” is now available on two distinct published gramophone records for this film. And the song at serial no. 3 – “Mehlon Ke Rehne Waale. . .” has got lost, probably forever. The saving grace is that the song at serial no. 7 – “Poochhiye Na Haal Jee. . .” is now available. It might also have been lost forever, but for this confusing set of decisions, which saved this song for posterity. And so the songs at serial no. 6 (this one not planned at all for release on gramophone record) and the song at serial no. 3 (unpublished due to cancellation of one gramophone record), are likely never going to surface. They may still be existing on some original spool tapes from the original recordings, and/or they may be on the soundtrack of the film. However, since both these items are not yet available in public domain, and with very little likelhood that they will make an appearance in the future, we could label them as LFe (Lost Forever). That does leave us two songs short of ever declaring this film as yippeee’d.

Coming to the second similar instance, also from this week. The film is ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ from 1962. It had made its debut on our blog on 23rd Dec, 2008. The seventh song of this film was posted on 24th Sep, 2011. Geet Kosh lists 8 songs for this film. The missing song is the one at serial no. 5 – “Sahil Ki Taraf Kashti Le Chal, Toofaan Ke Thapede Sehna Kya”. As per the listing, this song was recorded in the voice of Hemant Kumar. This song never got published on a gramophone record. Now eight total songs will completely fit on 4 gramophone discs. But the producer seems to have taken a decision to completely omit this song. In fact, the song at serial no. 6 – “Bhanwra Bada Naadaan Haaye”, makes appearance on two gramophone discs nos. N54036 and N54038, while the above mentioned song in Hemant Kumar’s voice has been completely axed from any publication. It does not exist in the film. The film information booklet lists this song, and that is just about it. Here is one more case where a song qualifies to be labeled as LFe. And that also leaves the film ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ one song short of being declared as yippeee’d.

Based on the above discussed circumstances, these two films will never reach the Yippeee status. So I have a proposal here to address this situation. In the face of such stern circumstances, I propose that we introduce a Yippeee variant status – ‘Conditional Yippeee’ – to be indicated as ‘Yc’ in our charts and tables. In such cases, when we come to the conclusion that it is (almost) impossible that one or more songs of a certain film will ever be traced, we may declare that film to be Conditinally Yippeee’d, once all the possibly available songs are accounted for on our blog. This week we have one more case of a partial missing song in a multi part / multi version scenario. In the case of the film ‘Chaand Mere Aaja’ from 1957. The main theme song of the film – “Chaand Ko Dekho Ji” / “Chaand Mere Aa Ja Re” – has one additional part, identified as the sad version. Details of this part are provided by dear Prakash ji, including the additional lyrics. Just that we as editors have not yet gotten around to update the post itself. In fact, the HFGK listing shows 7 songs, which include this sad version of the song. This sad version of the song is not released on gramophone discs, and is available only from the film itself. My effort is to get this post updated within a day, and be able to change the pending status of this film from ‘0.5’ to ‘0’. And by the way, the Geet Kosh listing has one incomplete information relating to this song. It lists Lata Mangeshkar as the singer of this part. However, as we view the video, we find that this part is in the voices of both Rafi Sb and Lata ji.

Let me come to the song for today. This discussion on errors and limitations has become quite long. I also wanted to write about the film ‘Doctor’ of 1941 and the related info error in the Geet Kosh. I encountered this error the previous week. But I will write about it in the next episode of this series.

‘Hercules’ of 1964, has quite a dubious distinction to note. The first song, the debut of this film, came on board on 18th September, 2010. Today, I bring on board the second song of this film. Interesting that this film has been in hibernation for a full decade, despite the fact that there are some wonderful songs pending for this film. As is evidenced by the song in this post – a Helen dance song in a royal darbaar setting. The words come from the pen of Anand Bakshi, the music is from the mind of N Datta and the singing voice is Asha Bhosle. On screen we see Dara Singh, as Hercules, in chains, possibly being prepared for execution. Other actors we see in this not so clear a video clip, are Nishi, BM Vyas, Maruti Rao, Leela Misra, P Kailash and Indira Billi.

Helen’s performance is her usual self – so wonderfully elegant and graceful, even as she gives a sensuous performance. The ease with which she is coordinating the dance movements, the lip syncing, the facial expressions et al – she is a master class all by herself.

If nothing else, then this week 10 years ago has to be characterized as the ‘Anmol Ghadi’ week. I am sure it was by design that every day of this week (actually six days of this week, barring the last day), the first song posted every morning is a song from the 1946 film ‘Anmol Ghadi’. This film has 12 songs listed in the Geet Kosh. As we entered this week ten years ago, five of these were already posted on the blog. That left seven. I am sure Atul ji took it upon himself to get the ‘Yippeee’ status for this film in a quick order, by posting one each of the remaining seven songs on each day of the week. And be done with it.

Well almost. Starting from 6th September in 2010, all the way through 11th September, Atul ji held true to his promise and posted the first song on these six days, that belonged to this iconic film. It almost sounds as if the ‘Atul-Song-a-Day’ blog was transformed into ‘Anmol-Ghadi-Song-a-Day’ for this week.

But then, we arrive at 12th September, the last song of this film which would have brought fame and recognition – well, it could not be posted. We have six posts on the day, but no ‘Anmol Ghadi’. I am keen to know from Atul ji, what happened that made him miss this target.

I had actually scanned through the posts for ‘Anmol Ghadi’ songs for that week. And I came to realize one thing. You see, the concept Yippeee had not yet been invented on this blog. And Atul ji was just going after this film, because of its music. As I checked the complete set of songs of this film on the blog, I find that the continuous posting thing had actually started on 4th September. On that day, Atul ji has simply written that this film has 12 songs, that three are already posted and that the film has wonderful music, so let us just bring it on board quickly. That was the simple thought behind continuously posting a song from this film, as the first song of the day, from 4th to 11th Sept. then the 12th date is missed. And the final song of the film gets duly posted on 13th.

And so, my eager anticipation awaits a response from Atul ji. “Why 12th was missed.’’

The numbers for the week -,

The posting continued at the then current brisk rate. The week saw a total of 43 songs posted, with the  daily rate being six songs per day, with one of the days showing up with seven. The 43 songs came from 37 films – six of them from ‘Anmol Ghadi’ and another two from the film ‘Milan’ of 1967. The remaining 35 songs are one each from 35 films.

The week witnessed as many as 13 debuts. Thirteen films made their appearance for the first time on the blog. No films got yippeee’d, with ‘Anmol Ghadi’ being the close call of almost there. Of the total 37 films featured that week, 29 have been yippeee’d during the interim decade, whereas 8 films are still awaiting completion of their songs on the blog.

The physical post numbers stretched from 2914 to 2956. So actually a blog century – the 29th, has happened in the previous week.

The guest post activity was fairly low in those times. Of the 43 posts, Atul ji accounts for 38, and only five posts came from the contributing team. Three of these posts are from Raja ji, one from Santosh Ojha ji, and one very interesting post on Shammi Kapoor from – yes, you guessed it – Greta Memsaab. A very interesting and informative post that identifies many of the side players in this group dance song – “Dekho Ab To, Kisko Nahin Hai Khabar” from the film ‘Janwar’ of 1965,

This post, having been delayed quite a bit, comes on the last day of the week under analysis. On this day, there is one film still pending for Yippeee status. The film is ‘Patanga’ from 1971. Two songs of this film are remaining to be posted. With this post we bring one of them on to the blog. Which means that this film is now just one song away from being inducted into the Yippeee hall of fame.

The song that I present today is a mujra dance song, being performed on screen by Laxmi Chhaya. There is an assortment of audience, as we regularly get to see in most mujra dance songs in films. I can clearly identify three of them. Wasti and Ajit are sitting together on a white sofa, and the bespectacled and balding Haroon is on a chair next to Ajit. The song is the regular mujra type choreography, with the dancer complaining that she has wasted her youth getting entangled with “you”, the addressal of “you” here being directed towards any of the many males sitting in the audience.

‘Patanga’ is a social film, produced under the banner of KR Films, Bombay and is directed by Kedar Kapoor. The list of actors reads as – Shashi Kapoor, Vimmi, Ajit, Rajendra Nath, Sajjan, Vasti, Ashok Kapoor, Lakshmi Chhaya, Zeb Rehman, Jagdish Raj, Ram Mohan, Leela Mishra, Praveen Pal, Geeta, Ameena Bai, Ram Avtar, Shekhar Purohit, Prem, Shiva Chandra, Ravindra Kumar, Haroon, Lal, Nasir, Balram, Santosh, and Rajkumar.

Interesting side note here that this is third film of actress Vimmi, who appeared in only 5 films during her short career that lasted from 1967 (debut in the film ‘Hamraaz’) to 1974 (‘Vachan’ being her last film).

The film has 8 songs. As mentioned above, after this post, we now have just one more song remaining for this film. Of the eight songs, four are from the pen of Neeraj, three by Hasrat Jaipuri and one penned by Indeewar. This song is from the pen of Neeraj.

The music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan. Yes, remembering Jaikishan today, on his remembrance day today. He passed away on 12th September in 1971. Interesting to note that this film was certified by the Censor Board on 20th August, 1971. It is possible that this film was just released, or maybe even released after, the passing away of Jaikishan.

The lyrics of this song have been sent in by dear Avinash ji.

And so, the penultimate song of ‘Patanga’ of 1971 – a run of the mill mujra performance as demanded by the formula.

Mukesh and his Composers – 20

A riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.
This is a quote famously attributed to English politician and statesman Winston Churchill for his views on Russian engagement during World War II. This analogy may be completely irrelevant to the context of today’s post, but then I could not help remembering the above quote when I became cognizant of the total number of Hindi songs sung by Mukesh for the composer being discussed in today’s post.

Well, we are talking about composer Avinash Vyas and Mukesh’s association with him. To sustain the unusual mystery and the context of the first two paras, I would request readers to guess the total Hindi songs sung by Mukesh for Avinash Vyas.

Meanwhile, to reveal Mukesh’s collaboration with him in Gujarati films and non-film songs, here are the details of the same. As usual, I had requested Shri Harish Raghuwanshi, the compiler of Mukesh Geetkosh to confirm the details of the combo. Further, I had requested him to send me only the total number of songs that Mukesh sang in Gujarati under Avinash Vyas.

However, Shri Harish ji despite his poor eyesight and health issues was kind enough to send me the complete details including confirmation of the total songs sung in Hindi films as well. Instead of keeping such invaluable details confined to my inbox, I thought it prudent to include the details in the present post and following are the two tables with the details self-explanatory.

Three songs only?

Well, however much we may debate and discuss, the fact of the matter is that there are only 3 songs of the combo. The composer was known for composing mainly for religious and mythological films. Contrary to popular belief, Mukesh has sung enough devotional songs in films which, as his other genre songs, have also become quite famous. Then, why such a low figure of only 3 songs is simply surprising.

Mukesh has sung only one song each in 3 of the 52 films scored by Avinash Vyas in Hindi.

So, why hardly 3 songs of the combo? As I have contemplated in my earlier posts on such surprises, there could be no reason whatsoever. More occasions simply did not happen. This could be the most plausible reason that one could come up with. As I finish writing this post, I am still under disbelief that there are only 3 songs of the combo.

Anyway, going through the songs, first two have been covered on the blog. The one from ‘Har Har Mahadev’ is in fact a famous duet with Sulochana Kadam. The second one from ‘Shiv Shakti’ is a solo bhajan.

It can be traced easily on the blog that if Mukesh has sung in any film, then that particular song is most likely the first to be featured or debuted on the blog.

Today’s film ‘Mata Mahakali’ (1968) also makes its debut on the blog with this highly philosophical song. The film was released under the banner of Sharad Productions and directed by Dhirubhai Desai. The cast included Ashish Kumar, Jaishree Gadkar, Nalini Chonker, Shahu Modak etc.

Lastly, Shri Harish ji has also confirmed that there are no NFS in Hindi of the combo. I thank him again for all the help he rendered in completing this post.

Mukesh and his co-singers –7

There is a school of thought amongst music lovers that the voice of Manna Dey suited better for Raj Kapoor than Mukesh. While technically, there could be substance to the concept, it remains a fact that the empathy evolving from the voice of Mukesh and the emotion and expressions of Raj Kapoor’s acting on screen fitted to a T. No wonder RK upon hearing Mukesh’s demise in far off Detroit city commented that he had lost his soul. I am of the firm opinion that the voice of Mukesh on Raj Kapoor suited most aptly than the actor singing himself.

As far as Manna Dey singing for Raj Kapoor is concerned, the songs from Chori Chori, Shree 420, Dil Hi Toh Hai, Mera Naam Joker etc. come to the mind instantly. Chori Chori and Shree 420, both released in 1956 were at a time when Mukesh was experimenting with many departments of films and had also signed a contract for the film Maashuqa as an actor-singer with heroine none other than Suraiya. The Contractalso had a clause that he would not be singing for anyone else till the completion of the film. The film unfortunately got delayed and so did the successful career of Mukesh.

It is for this reason that even though Mukesh has the iconic solo, a duet with Lata and a triad with Rafi saab and Lata, Manna Dey had his share of songs in the movie Shree 420 including the popular pyar hua ikraar hua hai.

It is said that Mukesh after singing 3 songs in the film conveyed to RK that he could no longer be part of the film because of the Contract that he had signed. So why didn’t Manna Dey establish himself as a permanent or a more frequent RK voice. Well, it was the year 1958, Mukesh free from the clutches of his Contract came back as a playback singer and boy what a return that was.

Madhumati, Parvarish, Phir Subah Hogi and Yahudi all under different composers and picturised on RK and Dilip Kumar were runway hits. Mukesh had found his mojo back. Raj Kapoor understood that with Mukesh giving him playback he need not look any further. The bond between them remained forever. Body and the soul’s bonding was noticed not only by Shankar Jaikishan but by other composers also. Thus, when Raj Kapoor forayed acting for other production houses, it was usually Mukesh who was summoned for playback.

Thus, we have Manna Dey singing only a few songs for Raj Kapoor in spite of the popularity of songs from Shree 420 and Chori Chori in 1956. However, all composers were also aware of the limitations of Mukesh and the versatility of Manna Day especially for the songs based on classical music. It is pertinent to mention the song from Dil Hi Toh Hai 1963. While most of the songs from this film were sung by Mukesh, Roshan the composer rightly found it prudent to have Manna Dey sing the popular Laagaa, chunri mein daag. With due respects to other stalwarts, I am of the firm opinion that no singer could have pulled off this song as elegantly as Manna Dey.

This post and the series as such is on Mukesh’s collaboration with other singers. And in this instance also, it’s not only about Mukesh and Manna Dey singing for RK camp but for all the songs that they rendered together in HFM. But then many songs sung by Manna Dey for Raj Kapoor have also become quite popular and hence I had to devote a majority of the post for their individual songs on Raj Kapoor.

Whilst we are on the discussing the singers in unison, I should highlight that Mukesh has sung a comic solo under Manna Dey’s composition for the film Chamkee (1952). I have always been curious to know why this song was offered to Mukesh as Manna Dey himself was quite apt at singing such songs. One possible reason could be due to the bad phase that Mukesh had entered during this period and this was could have been some kind of help extended.

Coming to today’s post, here is the list of all songs in which Mukesh and Manna Dey featured together. Not surprisingly, most of them are with multiple singers and chorus. Quite a few of them are rare and popular.

1 under Anilda is famous song from a popular film. It is interesting to note that it is sung by four singers whose names start with the letter “M”. Needless to say, it’s the only one of its kind in HFM where they have come together.

2 had many songs by Mukesh featured on Raj Kapoor and Mahendra Kapoor and Manna Dey join in for other actors in the song. Its again rare to find Geeta Dutt in SJ camp.

3 and 4 are under Hemant Kumar who himself was an accomplished singer and composer but got to many sing songs by other singers in his compositions. Mukesh has sung about half a dozen songs under him.

5 is quite a comic song on which our Arunkumar ji has written a detailed post.

Dus Numbri (1976) in which Mukesh had 04 songs was in continuation with the many songs that he was singing for Manoj Kumar during late sixties and seventies. The title song of this movie remains famous. Strangely, this title song is the only song of this film to be featured on the blog so far. Mukesh and Manoj Kumar’s combination had become quite popular with some outstanding songs. I had read somewhere that they were planning to produce a film upon the return of Mukesh from his US tour in 1976. As we are aware, Mukesh never came back from that tour as he passed away on 27 August 1976 in Detroit. This date being around the corner, my next post will be on his remembrance day and probably starting with a new series.

Reviewing the week of Aug16 – Aug22, I just thought of doing the analysis in one more way – to just see where all we had been and what all were we listening to during the time from the start of the blog on 19Jul2008 to 22Aug2010. Interesting things appeared.

It all started with thought – what is the distribution of songs across the decades in the week under review. I did a quick sort check and came up with the following data. This week we had seen 31 songs posted in all. And these 31 songs were distributed according to decade as follows,

The distribution is quite as expected – of the 31 songs, 25 songs (80%) are from the decades of 50s and 60s. Goodness, aren’t these the most favorite years of practically all listeners of Hindi film music.

The thought then prompted me to take a view of the total songs posted thus far, i.e. till 22Aug of 2010. By the end of that week, the total number of posts was 2827, and the total number of songs posted was 2928. The 100 odd more songs are due to multiple songs being included in a single post – multipart and multi version songs.

And the results are pretty much along the same lines, as expected. The overall distribution for all songs till 22Aug2010 stands as follows,

The overall % of the songs from 50s and 60s dips a little – down to 71%, but still, overwhelmingly most songs are still coming from that era. There is a sizeable interest in the 1970s – 17%. I am sure that is due to the fact that we are still listening to our favorite artists from the Golden Era. To approximately round off, the 30s-40s component is 8% and for 80s and beyond the allocation is 4%. In tabular form, as follows

Well, much as expected – the distribution of the listening and selection preferences of this group. Well, not maybe every week, but I will try to revisit this analysis after 2/3 months, and see the evolution of our selection preferences with time.

Let’s do the numbers for that week. Total posts that came on board that week is 31. Number of films represented is 27, with four films making a double appearance. Four films had made their debut that week, and no films were yippeee’d. However, since that week over the past 10 years, 24 of these films have been yippeee’d and seven remain pending. Also, that week we had one dot day.

The special event recorded for that week was a blog century. I have now inserted another column in the chart to track the appearance of century milestones. On 16 Aug 2010, the song “Jaan Pehchaan Ho” from the 1966 film ‘Gumnaam’ clocked in on the 28th century milestone for the blog. It was the 2800th post to come on board. Going back to revisit some of these posts, it is very enlightening. It is a delight to recall and refresh the large amount of trivia that is now silently sitting in the electrons on this blog’s storage. About this post – this was a special request post that Greta Memsaab had written for the blog. At 2800 posts, this was only the 12th guest post till then, and the second on by Memsaab. Poring through the article and the comments, one learns and re-learns so much more about these songs – names of the guitarists, name of the dancers, the fleeting appearance by Helen, the fact that the lead in dance music is lifted from the song “Teen Kanastar Peet Peet Kar” (‘Love Marriage’, 1957), and that an ad by Heinken has used this song – the entire lead in music and the mukhda of the song, in the voice of Rafi Sb. It is a revival experience par excellence.

And so, getting into this week. Seven films, and eight challenge opportunities for the team members. I must acknowledge that members are sending in challenge contributions – lyrics and sometimes articles too. And we need more of that. Gear up, and happy posting.

‘Raagini’ of 1958 is one of the two films pending for today’s date. The song being presented is a stage dance song, and as the performance rolls to the end, one finds that it is actually dream sequence song. It is being played out in a dream being experienced by Padmini, as she visualizes herself to be Anaarkali, dancing in the court of Prince Saleem, that is Kishore Kumar, the person she is love with.

The lyrics of this song are penned by Qamar Jalaalabaadi, the music is composed by OP Nayar and the singing voice is that of Asha Bhosle.

Mukesh and his co-singers – 6

Continuing with the series of the collaboration of Mukesh with his co-singers, I bring forth today his songs with Kishore Kumar. We started this series with Rafi saab and have covered only Talat saab as far as male co-singers are concerned. Kishore Kumar would have been an obvious next choice and in continuation I present this post.

Both singers began their career imitating the great KL Saigal. Mukesh sang the iconic song “Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De” from ‘Pehli Nazar’ in 1945 but had begun his singing career in 1940 itself. Kishore Kumar began his singing career much later in 1948, with the song “Marne Ki Duayein Kyun Maangoon” under Kemchand Prakash .

While Mukesh with his failed forays in various departments, settled seriously for playback from 1958, Kishore Kumar tasted fair success in his many inroads of films other than playback. Mukesh and Kishore Kumar in spite of being contemporaries had quite different trajectories. As such it is difficult to write in tandem about the two singers.

They collaborated for a total of only 10 songs. That’s about one song in three years. For this reason, I was again under the impression that all songs of the duo must have been covered. However, two songs are yet to be posted and today I present one of them here.

I missed my table formation on Mukesh songs for these several months and am happy to reproduce below the collection of the songs wherein the two singers have sung together in duets, triads and chorus songs.

Going through the above list quickly,

  1. Literally a Kishore Kumar solo was off course hijacked by self to represent the last song of Roshan-Mukesh collaboration to be featured on the blog. It was an opportunity I would never have let go and will remain one of my favourite posts on the blog.
  2. Is what Atul ji rightly says in the post is a light-hearted yet philosophical song. Again, he is right in saying that it’s a rare occasion when the 3 renowned singers came together. Going though the list above, we can safely conclude that it is in fact the only occasion.
  3. Featured in this post will be elaborated below and is probably the only one of its kind in HFM.
  4. Was again represented by self to remember composer Jaikishan on his 44th death anniversary. Here Mukesh and Kishore Kumar are singing for an older and younger generation respectively. More on this later.
  5. Has as many as 30 comments in the post and I would like to reproduce a part of Sadananad ji’s interesting observation. I always felt that whenever Kishore Kumar had sung with one or more other male singers, it was his voice which predominated the song. This song is an exception. It is Mukesh who has dominated with his voice lock, stock and barrel.
  6. Has Atul ji writing a befitting post on the many contributions of Sudhir ji to the blog. Another important feature of the post is the introduction of his program telecast on DD on 27 August 2012 on the occasion of Mukesh’s 36th death anniversary. I request readers to read the post again and watch the telecast in which Sudhir ji was invited to share his views.
  7. Of course is the iconic “Ik Din Bik Jaayega Maati Ke Mol which people usually associate with the solo sung by Mukesh. However as rightly pointed out in the post by our Sadanand ji, there are no less than 4 versions of this song in the film and in this particular triad Mukesh is joined by Kishore Kumar and Poornima also known as Sushma Shrestha. This is the only film in which Mukesh and Kishore Kumar have come together for two songs.
  8. This one is yet to be showcased on the blog and will remain the last of the combo to be featured after this post.
  9. Needs no introduction and is a rare and only one of its kind in HFM but also a landmark song to be posted on the blog on the occasion of representation of 11, 111th song on the blog. Again, the efforts, tricks and circumstances that the bosses engaged to bring forth the celebrations is to be read again to be felt, understood, enjoyed and appreciated.
  10. Was presented by Arunkumar ji in his Lost and Found – Gems from unreleased films series. In this unreleased film which took inordinate time for filming, we have an elderly Raj Kapoor and Ashok Kumar cajoling Bindu in the picturization of the song. This was probably the last film that RK acted.

To write about today’s song – we have Mehmood singing/taking for himself in his own voice, we have Kishore Kumar singing for Mehmood and Mukesh again singing for Mehmood. Have I mixed up the actors? 🙂

No. Mehmood played a triple role in this film ‘Humjoli‘ (1970), playing the roles of three generations of a family. But I must correct myself. It is not three, but 4 – a quartet role, probably the only one of its kind in Hindi films. In the last scene of this film, a new born baby makes an appearance on screen, being the son of the third generation Mehmood. And the face of the baby, as shown in the scene – it is again Mehmood himself.

It will be interesting to know if there are any such songs in which different singers have sung for the same actor in the same song. I personally feel it’s quite a rarity.

This film had multi-lingual make, remake, dubbings etc. I suppose, our Dr. Pradeep will have a feast on the issue in the comments section. I leave the stage open for him.

It’s easy to notice in the featured song, Mehmood of the mid-generation enacting Raj Kapoor’s acting, dialogue delivery and even the looks. I suppose it’s from the film JDMGBH.

The other songs from this film are well known. However only 3 out of the 6 songs have been represented as on date and this post covers the fourth featuring the singers under discussion. In this song as well as song no 4 in the list above, Mukesh sings for a mid-generation whereas Kishore sings for the younger one. From these examples, it is sort of evident that film makers and composers preferred Kishore Kumar to sing for newcomers and younger actors. In many of the songs of the 70s, Mukesh was usually resigned to giving playback for boatman, title songs etc. Off course there were huge exceptions such as the film ‘Kabhie Kabhi’ (1976) and the songs sung for Manoj Kumar.

There are quite a few films in which both Mukesh and Kishore Kumar were playback singers though not necessarily singing a duet or a triad in the same song. One such film is off course ‘Kati Patang’ (1971) in which Kishore Kumar has 3 glorious solos. Surprisingly RD Burman roped in Mukesh for another solo playback on Rajesh Khanna. Mukesh very much stands his ground in this solo “Jis Gali Mein Tera Ghar Na Ho Baalmaa“. This song as we all are aware is filmed on the famous Nainital lake. I am discussing this particular song as I have always wondered under what category this song would feature.

I have seen the film and have some fair idea of the plot. However, in this particular song, the look on Asha Parekh is more blank so to say. Rajesh Khanna is more composed than in his other songs sung by Kishore Kumar. The lyrics are somewhat cryptic. And, then Mukesh singing in a rather unusual high pitch. All these aspects put together; I am sure there can be various interpretations as to which genre this song belongs.

Can we have inputs from more knowledgeable readers of more such films in which the two singers sang for the same actor under different circumstances.

So, to conclude the rare combination of Mukesh and Kishore Kumar has a total of 10 songs.

Mukesh and his co-singers – 5

We remember Mukesh on his remembrance day today (22 July 1923 – 27 August 1976).

Needless to say, the post had to be special. But, when a singer has almost 80% of songs considered as hits and most of these songs already represented on the blog, what can be more special. Well, a few hitherto songs of Mukesh continue to be discovered with a great deal of exhilaration to his fans and old hfm lovers in general. I assume that the present song will make this post special.

It is well known that Mukesh has nil to very few duets with singers like Noorjahan, Amirbai Karnataki, Jagit Kaur, Khursheed, Parul Ghosh etc. With singers like Hamida Banu, Suraiya, Rajkumari, Surinder Kaur, Sitara Kanpuri etc, the numbers are again quite few. He does have sizable numbers with Lata, Asha, Suman Kalayanpur, Geeta Dutt etc.

A very interesting companion in singing in this discussion will be off course the versatile Shamshad Begum. I had almost taken it for granted that all songs of hers with Mukesh have been covered on the blog. But then one thing led to another and resulted in this post of which I am extremely happy. Not one but two duets have been discovered in the last few weeks. Before I proceed with revealing the songs, it is pertinent to mention the traceability aspects of these duets.

We go back to Sadanand ji posting the Mukesh number for MGR in the comments section. I decided to take up Dhaniram’s collaboration with Mukesh and as usual sent the query to Shri Harish Raghuvanshi ji (of Surat) enquiring if it was the sole song under the composer.

Harish ji did confirm the singularity of the case, but added a priceless info that there is a duet in Shole (1953) in which Mukesh has a duet with Shamshad Begum. He further stated that very few music lovers are aware of this duet. The context being Dhaniram being the other composer apart from Naresh Bhattacharya to have scored music for the film. When I searched for this duet on the internet, I came across a Hemant Kumar solo and his duet with Shamshad Begum. Not losing hope, I was lucky enough to find the full movie on youtube. I first decided to go through the credit titles if I could trace Mukesh.

The film titles are shown on a railway track with very poor background and the moving train literally pushing the titles out of the screen. With great difficulty, I saw all the titles and there appears no mention of any of the playback singers in the film. Here, I would seek more knowledgeable reader’s kind explanation as to why many of the old films never bothered to credit playback singers in the titles. I suppose this trend continued even in the sixties for quite a few films.

The print of the film is extremely poor in both voice and picturization. The saving grace being something is available to run through. In spite the bad print and poor audio what stands out is the impeccable grace and beauty of Bina Rai and the ever energetic and melodious voice of Shamshad Begum. Coming back to the bad print of the film Shole (1953), I decided to run the film arbitrarily at short intervals. Then for one of the duets with a rather long prelude, I could hear sound bites very familiar to me. Yes, it is undoubtedly Mukesh.

I was so excited that I noted the time at which this duet starts and closed the film. I went to the other room in my house where my wife was busy with our daughter in her studies. They had a cursory look at my face and instantly both asked what I was so delighted about. I told them about the discovery and they again became engrossed with the studies knowing very well that this guy has no better work to do. My daughter likes a few songs of Raj Kapoor sung by Mukesh and wife likes a few of his duets and solos, but they are never into these statistics and other aspects of old hfm songs as I am. Anyways, I was back to the same link and juncture and again savored what I was listening for the very first time; an unheard duet of Mukesh. Only the first couple of lines of the mukhda are sung by Mukesh and then Shamshad Begum takes over for the rest of the duet. Its an extremely melodious duet to listen.

Now coming to another strange feature, I found four different versions of this song. The below table is self-explanatory and I have provided links for each of the versions.

Now, if the film had Mukesh and the 78 rpm version songs had Hemant Kumar, it would have been quite understandable. But, Hemant Kumar having sung the film version of the solo makes the case quite intriguing. Did Mukesh walk out of the film after singing the duet? We may never know. What we do know is that during this period he was working in various departments such as acting, composing, producing etc. and these experiments costing him dearly in terms of getting offers to give playback arguably for the rest of his singing career.

Also, during late forties and early fifties, the void created by the passing away of KL Saigal in early 1947 was yet to be filled. Good friends Mukesh and Talat Mahmood were vying to fill the gap and they both failed. One can now say with much conviction that the void created by KL Saigal will remain till the end of days.

Coming back to the versions, both the film soundtracks have poor audio and the 78 rpm ones have better audio quality. For some reason, I personally feel the duet of the film soundtrack is the best amongst the four if a better copy is available to listen. The momentary pause that Shamshad Begum has in the film soundtrack is more appealing than in the version song. Now one may ask, pause is a pause and how it can be differentiated. Well, crazy music lovers have additional senses to assimilate such nuances in music. Long live such craziness. 🙂

Now we come to the important discussion on the combo of Shamshad Begum and Mukesh. Forget writing in detail about their association, the very mention of the two names together excites me to no end.  Mukesh and Shamshad Begum, two different styles, but when it came to duets the styles glued to form some glorious duets in the annals of HFM. At many places on the net it is mentioned that the singers have altogether 22-24 duets. I am happy to list 29 and here is the carcanet of the jewels.

A cursory glace at the table reveals that they have actively sung most of their 29 duets during a period of only for 4 years of their career. This aspect has much to be pondered about.

Before I proceed to write on the above duets please note that song no 23 has SD Batish, 26 has Geeta Roy, Pramodini Desai and 27 has Rafi saab singing along with Mukesh and Shamshad Begum in the respective songs.

It would not be an exaggeration to state that Mukesh and Shamshad were pioneers in playback singing. I know it is more often used for Shamshad’s career, but let us not forget that Mukesh too started giving playback as early as 1944 with ‘Uss Paar’. Why ‘Uss Paar’ and not ‘Moorti’ or ‘Pheli Nazar’? Well, that could take another detailed post. 🙂

In the above list song number 1, 3, 4 and 5 are regular features on Radio Ceylon and are played to this day. 6 was of course the directorial debut of Raj Kapoor, with Ram Ganguly’s haunting scores – the songs of the film remain popular to this day. The next film of RK, as we are well aware, had a change in composers. Shamshad Begum had a cabaret solo in ‘Awara’ and a couple of not so popular songs for SJ thereafter.

10 by one of my favourite composers Ghulam Mohammed is a rare treat to hear. I only wish Mukesh has sung more songs for him.

8, 9 and 11 to 14 need no description and arguably are the best-known duets of the combo; the magician of these two films being none other than the great Naushad.

‘Shabnam’ under SD Burman had 3 duets of the combo with Mukesh giving playback for thespian Dilip Kumar. Needless to say, the songs of this film were a huge rage during those days.

21 under Gyan Dutt is an absolute masterpiece. The debut movie of Madan Mohan had the combo singing a comical duet at 22.

The other songs may not be very well known, but as I have said earlier it is the combination of the singers that make the duets lively and a pleasure to listen.

Quite a few of these duets have been covered by our Sudhir ji in his series on Mukesh wherein he covered the rare and difficult to trace songs at the beginning of Mukesh’s career. Again, as I have written earlier, in spite of the best efforts of Sudhir ji having covered all the songs of Mukesh till 1950, welcome discoveries continue to be uncovered and 2 is such an example. Sudhir ji has shared the audio with me and it will be posted on the blog in the very near future. 🙂

29 and probably the last duet of the combo is covered in this post and I have already written about the many facets of this song. In fact Sudhir ji has sent queries and sought clarifications from his collector friends to understand the existence of the multiple versions of this song in the film.

‘Shole’ (1953) was directed by BR Chopra for Hira Films. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Bina Rai, Purnima, Jeevan, Mohana, Manmohan Krishna, Mirza Musharaf, Romi, Naaz, Uma Dutt etc in it. The movie had two music directors viz Dhaniram and Naresh Bhattacharya. The present song is composed by the latter. The lyrics of this multiple version song are credited to Kamil Rashid.

The lyrics of the Hemant Kumar solo version are slightly different in the 78 rpm vs the soundtrack versions, but giving due credit to Hamant Da, I herewith, for obvious reasons, present the lyrics of only the film soundtrack version of Mukesh and Shamshad Begum

Remembering Mukesh on his 96th birth anniversary (22 July 1923 to 27 August 1976).

A life and career spent on entertaining music lovers all over the world, the very mention of his name brings to the mind several of his priceless renditions. A voice which remains active on air-waves to this day and beyond. More than being on the air-waves and various technological formats, it is the legacy and remembrance of the familiar voice that continues to dwell in the hearts of music lovers. A voice so familiar that it directly conveys to our hearts the feelings expressed in his songs.

For this post, I have taken the liberty of using material and information provided by many fellow blog contributors as well as Shri Harish ji.

It all started when Sadandand ji posted a comment on this post of Sudhir ji in his rather elaborate and highly researched series on missing films and songs of the 60’s which was given to him as a homework. Sadanand ji in the comments section of the aforesaid post has provided quality information and the video link of the song. The fact that Mukesh had sung a solo for MGR made me sit up and take notice. I had heard the song but was not aware that it was featured on MGR.

I was under the impression that it could be the only song sung by Mukesh for MGR. So I asked our Sudhir ji if he could send me the list of Hindi films in which MGR had acted. His prompt and detailed reply was as follows,

A dozen films which included an unreleased film. Going through the list, one finds that the very first Hindi film in which MGR acted has a duet of Mukesh with Shamshad Begum. I am not sure if Mukesh sang for MGR in the duet, but it appears that the song under discussion is his only solo for MGR.

However, this post is on the collaboration of Mukesh with composer Dhaniram about whom very less material is available on the net. Shri Arunkumar ji helped me in sending the web-link of one of his interviews and it can be found here.

I have come across Dhaniram’s name many years back as two of his songs sung by Talat Mahmood are my personal favourites. They are Yeh Kya Hai Dhang Zamane Ka and aao baadal chain se royen.

The one from Dak Babu(1954) is simply out of the world. I request readers to listen to this composition and rendition by Talat Mahmood and especially the lines.

One can only ask, where are those days and where are those people who created such majesties.

Coming back to Mukesh-Dhaniram, the present song appears to be their only collaboration and hence there will be no table. (But, then there is always a possibility of tracing obscure songs…)

The present film Meri Behan (1962) starring MGR was the dubbed version of the Tamil film ‘Aransilankumari’ (1961) as confirmed by Sadanand ji.

Now some interesting trivia.

Mere Behan (1962) was based on Tamil film Aransilankumari (1961).

Aransilankumari (1961) was based on 1952 Hollywood film Scaramouche.

Scaramouche (1952) in turn is based on the novel with the same title by Rafael Sabatini.

The novel by Rafael Sabatini is based on story set during the French revolution.

So, the conclusion can be deduced that our own Mere Behan (1962) was based on French Revolution. ?

Since I could trace very little to write on Dhaniram and considering the fact that Mukesh has a solitary song for the composer, I have probably failed to do justice to the post and the composer.

I am however glad to present this solo number sung by Mukesh for the great MGR. I thank Sadanand ji, Arunkumar ji, Harish ji, Sudhir ji and Atul ji for having given me this opportunity to present the song.

The post is a tribute to Mukesh on his birth anniversary for his voice has become an inseparable part of our lives which he himself had said in one of his songs…

My Railway related reminiscences- 3

In my first article in the series, I discussed my first posting at Secunderabad. In my second articles, I went back into the past and discussed my probation days, including my stay at Vadodara.

In this third episode, I go back to the future ! Here I discuss my second posting.

My first posting was perhaps in the best place in the Railway zone of South Central Railway. I was posted in the capital city. I stayed near Secunderabad Railway station and I got a Railway quarter there. A capital city has so many attractions as well as opportunities. Those were the days when “computer” was a big buzz word. We had computer coaching institutes mushrooming all over India. A typical computer course taught DOS, wordstar, Lotus 123 and dbase3 . Does it ring any bells with some readers ? 🙂

A government employee is supposed to take permission if he/she wants to study in any course while in government service, with the undertaking that his study would not affect his performance in his/her job. I duly took this permission and began to attend one such course in evening.

My boss in my work place was an old fashioned conservative man. Same was the case with my bosses at the Headquarter. One standard advise that I would be given by them was – “concentrate on learning your job instead of learning about computers.” They did not share my “vision” that computers are a big productivity tools and they would play an important role in our lives in future.

My HQ bosses decided that the facilities at the capital city were harmful for me and so they decided to post me to a place where such facilities were non existent.

They identified a place that was poles apart when compared with Secunderabad. It was called Purna, in Marathwada region of Maharashtra. I was posted there.

This news was naturally a setback for me. But there was not much one could do about it. This place was a junction station and it had MG lines.I took a night train called Kacheguda Ajmer express (the most prestigious train in the section). The train started at night from Secunderabad and arrived Purna after midnight at around 4 AM or so.

In Secunderabad, I was a small fish in a big ocean as far as Railways set up was concerned, but I was going to be a big fish in a small pond like Purna. There I was being posted as the incharge of all Mechanical Engineering activities of Railways in and around Purna. My beat covered places up to Manmad (360 km to west), Khandwa (405 km to north), Adilabad (242 km to east) and Nizamabad (150 km to South East). All four places were in different directions and were located in three different states. When I think about it, the area under my jurisdiction was larger than the entire Railway system in some small countries. All this was MG section.

I arrived Purna Railway station at the early hours. Since I was going to be the boss of all I surveyed, people had arrived at the station to receive me. People unfamiliar to me always had difficulty identifying me. I got down from the station and stated looking for people who may have arrived to receive me. Likewise those who had arrived to receive me were lookng for someone who should look like a boss to them. Finally we managed to locate each other. They took me to Railway Officers Guest House, a small two room guest house. One room was booked for me and this room was going to be my place of stay till I got my regular accomodation.

Most people travel in style, carrying large number of suitcases which they have great difficulty fitting inside their train berth and they then secure their suitcases under lock and key. I on the other hand would travel with very modest looking luggage, typically a bag, and a jhola, and sometimes a suitcase. I would shove them under my train berth. No securing them under lock. In fact even my suitcase would not be locked if I could help it. I secured my suitcase only to avoid the embarrasment of an unlocked suitcase getting open and all its content falling out. And my luggage never got stolen despite lying all unsecured !

The modestness of my luggage was one of the reasons why unfamiliar people coming to receive me at the station would be unable to locate me at first glance. 🙂 Once my luggage was kept at the rest house, naturally it would remain all unlocked.

The small rest house had very small number of staff. Cleaning and dusting of the rooms was done by a lady. Her small child would accompany her. The door of the room would remain open all the time.

In the morning I went to my work place. This place was a steam loco shed, located towards south of the Purna Railway station. In its prime, this loco shed had over 60 MG steam locomotives. The number had come down a good deal.

The office was located on the first floor of a old fashioned British Style building. My chamber was quite large and spacious vis a vis the small chamber that I had in my previous place of posting. There were hundreds of staff in the office. People there still complained about there being less number of staff. 🙂

A few months later, my top boss (Chief Mechanical Engineer, based at Secunderabad ) paid a visit to Purna. During the course of his “inspection” of the place, he enquired- “how many clerks are there in the shed ?”.

The reply was “The work has reduced drastically, and so has the number of clerks. Now we have ONLY 40 clerks.”

“ONLY 40 clerks. My office at Secunderabad dealing with entire zone only has 39 clerks !”- the Chief Mechanical Engineer exclaimed !

Though I joined at Purna, my heart was still at Secunderabad and I would try to go back to Secunderabad at weekends and holidays, much to the chagrin of my immediate boss. I would leave for Secunderabad on friday and arrive back on Monday morning.

Once I went to Secunderabad on weekend and arrived back on monday morning. While at Secunderabad, I bought sweets, with the intention of consuming them at leisure in Purna. As usual, my luggage remained unlocked in my room.

When I came back to my room in the evening, I found that out of 20 pieces of sweet, only one piece remained in the bag where I had kept the sweet packet. The cleaning lady and her young son were looking very worried. I realised that the small kid had opened the box, and seeing the sweets, he kept eating the pieces and her indulgent mother could not prevent him in time. Now both of them were very worried.

I looked at the matter from the point of view of the kid and decided that it was alright. I behaved as if nothing happened. The mother and child waited till the morning to see my reaction. I showed no reaction and both of them were mightily relieved. It must have been an unexpected big lucky break for them. I could notice that they were silently thankful to me from the core of their hearts.

With time, I stopped going to Secunderabad at weekends. Instead, I would go to the nearly towns in the first half and be back by night. There was Parbhani (30 km to the north) and Nanded (30 km to the south) from Purna. These two district places had may be 4-5 movie halls each. I would visit one of these places during weekends, watch a movie and would come back to Purna by night.

All this journey was by train, of course. On one such occasion, I had gone to Parbhani. I watched some movie and then boarded the evening train coming towards Purna. The middle aged person seated opposite me in the first class coach was a PWD engineer in Maharashtra Government. He was coming back to his Nanded residence after attending some meeting at Aurangabad. I got introduced to him. He told me “kabhi koi kaam ho to bataana. Indian ke Home minister S B Chawhan ka main family friend hoon.” He also gave me his home address of Nanded.

I got down at Purna.

I was a “different” kind of Railway officer. I believed in things like honesty, fairplay etc. My immediate boss (based at Secunderabad), on the other hand was an archtypical Government official who believed in sucking up to the boss as the easy and only way of success. And he expected me to do the same. There were occassions when “failures” would take place and he would ask me to suspend someone. I would carry out my investigation into the failure and would found that the person required to be suspended was innocent. So I would refuse to suspend the innocent man.

This happened on quite a few occasions. He at his level would tell the division boss”(DRM)- “driver was responsible for late start of train. I have asked my Purna officer to suspend the driver.” I would investigate the matter and I would find that the driver was innocent.

The boss looked for opportunity to get his own back. One usual opportunity was to write adversely about my performance in my annual confidential report. I was an unusual kind of person who did not give a damn and I felt that spoiling my ACR was a non issue. He got his opportunity to actually hurt me. I wanted to take leave because my parents were calling me. It is not difficult for people to guess the probable reason. 😉 I foolishly informed my boss of the reason why I wanted leave. So he got a great opportunity to harass me. It is not possible to give you leave right now. But you will be given leave next month. He would tell me. I would believe him and ask for leave the next month. Then also he would say the same thing. This went on for three months and by the time it was clear to one and all that my boss was using this opportunity to harass me.

I felt very low when I was denied leave for the third time. I felt helpless. Then I remembered the Nanded based man. I went to Nanded and met him. I asked him to help. He was of course taken aback. He was no doubt a family friend of Indian home minister and a school mate of his son but what he had told me in the train may have been an exaggeration of his influence. In any case, meeting with him and talking with him served as some balm and gave me some mental relief.

A few weeks later, I received a telegram- “father serious, come home immediately.” I , alongwith my staff were naturally aghast, my supervisor (Loco Foreman) raised hell with the division headquarter and arranged for my leave on urgent basis. I was actually quite worried till I reached home and I was relieved to know that my father was alright. It was the usual time tested way of securing leave if the proper way of obtaining leave failed.

This episode taught me a valuable lesson that I tell everyone to follow. You should never tell others (especially your boss) about your “problems” and expect him to sympathise with you. Your vulnerabilities will be used against you. You should give the impression that you have no problems whatsoever. I have followed this lesson after this experience. I have rarely asked for any leave during the last 20 years of my service. And I tell everyone that I am happy wherever I am posted. And whatever I state happens to be the truth as well.

The movie that I had watched at Parbhani that evening (when I met that PWD Engineer) may have been either “Daamini” (1993) or “Dil Aashna Hai”(1992) or some other movie. I am not sure now. Let me assume that it was “Daamini” (1993).

This movie was directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. It had Rishi Kapoor, Meenakshi Seshadri, Sunny Deol, Amrish Puri, Tinu Anand, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Anjan Srivastava, Rohini Hattangadi, Aamir Khan, K K Raina, Paresh Rawal, Sulbha Arya, Vijayendra Ghatge, Viju Khote, Achyut Potdar, Asha Sharma etc in it.

The movie had five songs. Here is the first song from the movie to appear in the blog.

This song is sung by Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik. Sameer is the lyricist. Music is composed by Nadeem Shrawan.

The song is picturised on Rishi Kapoor and Meenakshi Sheshadri.

With this song, “Daamini”(1993) makes its debut in the blog.
