She had already notched some firsts in HFM playback singing that did not get noticed at that time. For instance, she had become the first playback singer ever to sing more than one thousand songs in Hindi movies by 1954. She kept setting benchmarks that others could only dream of. We will discuss them at appropriate occasions.

A very nice song, appearing fresh as daisy. I listened to this song for the first time only just now. A forgotten gem of a song that deserves to be better known among music lovers.

Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part VII: Year 1953
———————————————————————————————————

Lata Mangeshkar, who had made her playback debut in 1940s (in Marathi movies) had to struggle for quite a few years to find a foothold in Hindi movies playback singing. By 1947, she had a grand total of 9 songs to show as a playback singer in HFM. Still, by the time the decade of 1940s ended, Lata Mangeshkar had a meteoric rise to the very top.

It is said that climbing to the top is easier, but remaining at the top is more difficult. We see that Lata Mangeshkar, after rising to the top in 1949, and statistically touching her highest peak in 1951 (223 songs) stayed close to her peak in subsequent years, without climbing down too low. The tally of 194 songs for movies of 1953 is only 29 songs lesser than her all time record of 223 songs for movies released in a calender year. So, one sees that Lata Mangeshkar was not a meteor, but a star.

Here are the details of songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar in Hindi movies released in 1953 :-

* Note:- The one solo song of “Firdaus”(1953), viz Phool chun le mere baalam was also there in “Naubahaar”(1952).

We see that Lata Mangeshkar sang 194 songs in 44 movies- excluding “Firdaus” song, which was actually a song of “Naubahaar”(1952).

Lata Mangeshkar added some new musical collaborators during this year. Music directors Dhaniram, R Sudarshanam-Dhaniram, R C Boral, Salil Chaudhary, Pt Shivramkrishna and Vasant-Prabhu composed songs for Lata Mangeshkar for the first time in this year 1953. Madhup Sharma, Madhukar Rajasthani, Manmohan Sabir and Saba Afghani penned songs for Lata Mangeshkar for the first time in this year.

Shankar Jaikishan and C Ramchandra were the major music directors for her this year. Shankar Jaikishan composed 44 songs in her voice in 7 movies. C Ramchandra composed 40 songs in her voice in 6 movies. So these two music directors composed 50% of the songs that Lata Mangeshkar sang in movies of 1953 !

Rajinder Krishan penned 47 songs in 8 movies whereas Shailendra penned 32 songs for her in 10 movies. So these two lyricists penned almost 45 % of all songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar this year. It shows that Lata Mangeshkar was being backed by the top music directors and top lyricists of the time.

Out of 44 movies of 1953 where Lata Mangeshkar lent her vice, all her songs in majority of these movies are already covered. Some Lata Mangeshkar songs are yet to be covered in 13 movies.

By the end of 1953, Lata Mangeshkar had sung 953 songs in HFM. As many as 490 of these songs (53%) were under the batons of five music directors , namely C Ramchandra (158 songs), Husnlal Bhagatram (98 songs), Shankar Jaikishan (98 songs),Anil Biswas (88 songs) and Roshan (48 songs). As for lyricists 383 out of 953 songs (40%) were penned by just five lyricists, namely Rajinder Krishan (136 songs), Shailendra (74 songs), Hasrat Jaipuri (62 songs), Shakeel Badayuni (58) and P L Santoshi (53 songs). By 1953, Lata Mangeshkar had worked with 59 Music directors and 94 lyricists.

“Aansoo”(1953) is alphabetically the first movie of 1953 that still has some leftover Lata songs not yet discussed in the blog. “Aansoo”(1953) was directed by Shanti Kumar for Famous Pictures, Bombay. This “social” movie had Kamini Kaushal, Shekhar, Pran, Nawab, Amirbai Karnataki, Indu Pal, Chaman Puri, Rajkumari, Kabil Amritsari, Parvati Devi, C Nazeer, Indira Bansal, Mumtaz mati, Roopmati, Suhel Chaudhary, Satyarani, Aruna Mehta, Shrimati Homi Master, Ghulam Hussain, Madan Singh, Madan Mohan, Sudesh Kumar, Baby Kumkum, Baby Kavita, Baby Suman, Binu Brar etc in it.

The movie had eight songs in it. Six songs have been covered in the past. There were five Lata Mangeshkar songs in it. Three were solos and two were duets (with Rafi). Four of these songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the fifth and final Lata song from “Aansoo”(1953). This song is a solo song. Qamar Jalalabadi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Husnlal Bhagatram.

Only the audio of the song is available. Seeing that Kamini Kaushal was the leading lady, one can guess that the song was lipsynced by her on screen. Nevertheless, I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song.

After this song, only one song is left from “”Aansoo”(1953). Details of this song “Chha rahi kaali ghata jiyara mora lahraaye hai” is not gven in HFGK, HFGK makes a guess that this song was probably sung by Shamshad Begam. These is a famous song with this mukhda by Begam Akhtar. I wonder if this sing was sung by Begam Akhtar. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on this matter.

Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part VI: Year 1952
———————————————————————————————————

I had mentioned that Lata Mangeshkar reached the peak of her HFM singing career in 1951 (statistically that is) in the sense that she sang as many as 223 songs in movies released in 1951. She would never be able to exceed this tally in future, though she came close to this figure in future years on a few occasions.

1952 saw Lata Mageshkar further consolidating her position at the top. This year she sang 177 songs. Here are the details :-

We can see from the above table that Lata Mangeshkar had sung songs in 43 movies out of 105 movies that were released in 1952.

She worked with 24 music directors in this year. Interestingly enough, as many as 9 of these music directors were working with her for the first time. These music directors were A R Qureshi, Ali Akbar Khan, Basant Prakash, Bhola Shreshtha, Hemant Kumar, Manna Dey, S D Batish, S N Tripathi and Shyam Babu Pathak.

Likewise, she worked with 29 lyricists in these movies. Arjun Dev Ashq, Prakash Bakshi, Ramesh Gupta, Roopbani, Satyendra Athhaiyya, Shyam Hindi, Uddhav Kumar (solo credit), and Umar Ansari were the eight lyricists who were penning lyrics for Lata Mangeshkar for the first time.

By the end of 1952, Lata Mangeshkar had sung 759 songs in HFM. As many as 327 of these songs (43%) were under the batons of four music directors , namely C Ramchandra (118 songs), Husnlal Bhagatram (89 songs), Anil Biswas (65 songs) and Shankar Jaikishan (54 songs). As for lyricists 280 out of 759 songs (37%) were penned by just five lyricists, namely Rajinder Krishan (89 songs), Shakeel Badayuni (57), P L Santoshi (52 songs), Shailendra (42 songs)and Hasrat Jaipuri (40 songs).

Out of 43 movies of 1952 where Lata Mangeshkar lent her voice, all Lata songs of 29 of these movies have already been covered. That leaves us with 14 movies of 1952 which are available for us for discussing Lata Mangeshkar songs.

Alphabetically, “Annadaata”(1952) is the first such movie. This movie was produced by Sheikh Mukhtar and directed by Ismail Memon for Umar Khayyam Films, Bombay. This “social” movie had Veena, Ajit, Kanhaiyalal, N A Ansari, Sankatha Prasad, Sharifa, Nazeer Kashmiri, Kamal Mohan, Sheikh, Akhtar, Itar Singh, Neena Maker, Mukri, Sheikh Mukhtar etc, with guest appearance by Murad.

The movie had eleven songs in it. Two songs, both Lata solos, have been covered in the past. This movie had six Lata solos in it.

Here is the third song, another Lata solo, from “Annadaata”(1952). This song is penned by Hasrat Jaipuri. Music is composed by Md Shafi.

Only the audio of this joie de vivre genre of song is available. My guess is that this song was picturised on Veena. Nevertheless, I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picurisation of this song.

Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part IV: Overview of the decade 1946-1950
———————————————————————————————————

When Lata Mangeshkar began her playback career in HFM, she got to sing only nine songs in the first two years (1946 and 1947). By the time the decade ended in 1950, her playback career had seemingly reached dizzying heights. In subsequent years and decades, she would scale far higher peaks.

So far, we have discussed yearwise breakup of songs of Lata Mangeshkar from 1946 to 1950. In this episode we will take a pause and review her career from 1946 till 1950, in what was her first decade (out of so many decades) as a playback singer in HFM.

Here is the yearwise summary of her career from 1946 till 1950:

From the above, we notice that Lata Mangeshkar had already sung more songs in five years of her fledgling singing career than what several wellknown HFM singer would sing in their entire careers. To put things in perspective, K L Saigal sang less that 150 HFM songs and Suraiyya sang less that 350 songs in HFM.

While the figures of most columns add up in the above table, the number of music directors and lyricists do not add up, because the same music directors and lyricists who worked with Lata Mangeshkar in one year would often work with her repeatedly in future as well. It is interesting to note that she had already worked with 31 Music directors and 66 lyricists within a five year long playback career. Majority of her songs were solo songs, which meant that music directors had full faith in her voice carrying the playback singing of the movie on her shoulders.

Let us now take a look at the music directors who used Lata Mangeshkar’s voice during this period.

We can see from the above that 50 % of all her songs (175 numbers) were compositions of just four music directors viz. Husnlal Bhagatram, C Ramchandra, Anil Biswas and Ghulam Mohammad. Many music directors who would subsequently use Lata Mangeshkar extensively and create timeless classics with her voice had yet to arrive on the scene.

Similar was the case with lyricists who worked with her. Let us take a look at the lyricists who worked with her during this period.

From the above, we notice that some usual suspects like Rajinder Krishan and Majrooh Sultanpuri had already started working with Lata Mangeshkar by this time. They along with three other lyricists had penned one third (117 songs) of the songs that Lata Mangeshkar had sung by then. We also notice that the number of lyricists that she worked with is about twice the number of music directors that she worked with.

We also notice that the blog contains 305 out of 359 Lata Mangeshkar songs from this period. So we have just over 50 more Lata Mangeshkar songs left to be discussed. Most well known songs have already been covered. These 50 odd songs are likely to be lesser known, and even rare songs.

On this occasion, here is one such song. This song is from “Shaadi Ki Raat”(1950). This movie was directed by Yashwant Pethkar for Prakash Pictures, Bombay. This “social” picture had Geeta Bali, Rehman, Vijaylaxmi, Leela Mishra, Jankidas, Ansari, Shanta Kunwar, Baby Durga, , Anwari Bai, Arun etc in it. The movie had twelve songs in it. Pt Govindram was the music director of the movie, but three of the songs were composed by S Mohinder and one by Aziz Hindi.

Three songs have been covered in the past, but none of them were sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The movie had two Lata Mangeshkar solo songs in it. One was composed by S Mohinder and another by Pt Govindram. Both were rare songs.

Here is one of these songs. It is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Sarshar Sailaani is the lyricist. Music is composed by Pt Govindram.

The song is 70 year old, and I listened to it for the first time just now. What a fresh as dew voice it sounds even today !

Only the audio of the song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song.

Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part III: 1950
——————————————————————————————

So, we come to the year 1950. Lata Mangeshkar had announced her arrival on HFM scene in 1949. That year also marked the beginning of the golden era of HFM, which lasted till 1980.

Here are the details of the songs that Lata Mangeshkar sang in HFM in movies that were released in 1950:-

Thus we can see that Lata Mangeshkar sang 143 songs under the music direction of 15 Music composers in 1950.

But during those days no one knew what future had in store. If one thinks about it, Geeta Roy was also doing very well. During 1949, she sang 103 songs while Lata Mangeshkar had sung 157 songs 143 songs. In 1950, Geeta Roy sang 166 songs ! More than what Lata Mangeshkar sang in the year ! So, it was Geeta Roy who was ahead of Lata Mangeshkar in 190s in the race for the leading female playback singer of HFM.

Out of 36 movies of 1950, all Lata songs of as many as 20 movies have already been covered. So, only 16 movies of 1950 can be taken up for discussing a Lata song in the blog.

“Apni Chhaayaa”(1950) is alphabetically the first such movie of 1950. This movie was directed by P L Santoshi for Chitralaya Limited, Bombay. This “social” movie had Sulochana Chatterjee, Balwant singh, Radhakishan, Mumtaz Ali, Sajjan, tiwari, Ram Singh, Dulaari, Mona, Neelam, Satyarani, Jawahar Kaul, Bab Raja, Narbada Shankar, Karadkar, Niranjan, Madan singh, Cuckoo etc in it.

The movie had ten songs in it, including two Lata songs. Four songs from the movie, including one Lata solo (incorrecly mentioned in HFGK as a Lata Chitalkar duet), namely Andhiyaare ghar mein jyot jali has been covered in the blog.

Here is the second and final Lata song from “Apni Chhaayaa”(1950) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Lata and Chitalkar. P L Santoshi is the lyricist.

The movie had two music directors, via=z Husnlal Bhagatram Nd Hanuman Prasad. HFGK mentions two songs as Hanuman Prasad composion and is silent about the music directors of other movies. Here I have assumed Husnlal Bhagatram as the music director of the song.

Only the audio of this rare song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song.

Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part II: 1948-1949
——————————————————————————————
This series was started last Monday (28 September 2020), which was Lata Mangeshkar’s 91st birthday. The series has the ambitious aim of providing statistics of all HFM songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar-Year by year.

The first part of the series covered Lata Maneshkar HFM songs of 1947 and 1948. That was easy, seeing that the total number of HFM songs sung by her in these two years added upto just nine songs.

1948 saw a change in fortune for her. This time she got to sing a decent number of songs from a decent number of movies. From HFGK, and also by listening to songs of 1948 where no singers were mentioned in HFGK, I have been able to arrive at a figure of exactly 50 songs from 17 movies for Lata Mangehkar in 1948. Here are the details :-

Total 17 movies 14 MDs 50 50 37 6 4 3 19 lyricists

One can see that all songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar according to the above list have already been covered in the blog. I was hoping that I would be able to locate at least one Lata Mangeshkar song undiscussed in the blog for discussion with this writeup, hoping that some songs where singers are not known will turn out to be Lata Mangeshkar songs. We actually discovered some Lata Mangeshkar song this way. For instance, “Asha”(1948) has four Lata Mangeshkar solo songs according to HFGK. But I found out that another song, namely Sajna re tori kaun dagariya is also a Lata Mangeshkar solo song. I also discovered that song number 5 (no singer memtioned) and song numbe 2 (Lata Mangeshkar mentioned as the singer) are one and the same song. So in effect, it turns out that “Asha”(1948) has five Lata Mangeshkar songs, as against four as mentioned in HFGK.

When I checked in “Gandhaar”- which contains a list of all Lata Mangeshkar songs over the years, I find that it mentions a “Mandir”(1948) song as Lata Mangeshkar song. “Mandir”(1948) had 12 songs and HFGK contains no details of singers for any of these songs. Lata Mangeshkar had acted in this movie. According to “Gandhaar”- the song “lo wah aayi nindariya chhup chhup gupchup dhheere” has been sung by Lata Mangeshkar. This song does not appear to be available. This song, if sung by her was most likely picturised on her as well. Unfortunately, neither audio nor video of this song seems to be available on pulic domain as of now.

That forces me to discuss a Lata song of 1949 with this article. But I will have to discuss the Lata Mangeshkar songs of 1949 too in the process. And that is what follows below.

1949 was quite a breakthrough year for Lata Mangeshkar. This year she sang 157 songs from 38 movies. The blog has so far covered 133 of these songs. Here are the details :-

So we can see that a career that was stuttering for two years began to show promise in 1948 and it recorded a meteoric rise in 1949. 1949 saw the golden era of HFM getting launched which would last till 1980. Golden era of Lata Mangeshkar as a playback singer also began in 1949, as can be seen from her portfolio of songs in 1949.

Looking at the list of movies in 1949, Lata Mangeshkar sang songs in 38 movies. All Lata Mangeshkar songs of 27 of these movies have already been covered. So we have only 11 movies of 1949 left that give us opportunity to discuss Lata Mangeshkar HFM songs of 1949.

Alphabetically, “Dil Ki Basti”(1949) is the first eligible movie of 1949 which still has a Lata Mangeshkar song left to be discussed. This movie was directed by Wahid Qureshi for Aaina Pictures Bombay. This “social” movie had Nigar, Masood, Urmila, Lalita Pawar, Tiwari, Amar etc in it. There were nine songs in it. Six of these songs have been covered in the past.

“Dil Ki Basti”(1949) had two Lata Mangeshkar solo songs in it. One song, viz Aag lage jag saara dekhe has been discussed in the past.

Here is the second and final Lata Mangeshkar song from “Dil Ki Basti”(1949) to appear in the blog. It is penned by Wahid Qureshi. Music is composed by Ghulam Mohammad.

Only the audio of the song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part I: 1946-1947

Today (28 september 2020) is the 91st birthday of Swar Samragyi Lata Mangeshkar (DoB 28 September 1929). We as part of HFM lovers extend her a very happy birthday and wish her many happy returns of the day.

She has been the most influential singer of HFM (and by extension all Indian film music).

A lot has been written on her career and her songs and her life. Instead of joining that race and repeating the already much repeated facts about her, I would take this occasion to stat my discussion of her HF songs yearwise, right from the beginning. So one can see that it is going to be a long series, which may have started on her birthday and it will contunue on and on, and each post will discuss one year. She has been around for more than six decades. It will take me at least 40 posts, may be more to discuss her songs over the years. I plan to publish one article every year. At this rate, this series could take upto one year. But then what is one year for this blog which is going on for more than 12 years !

This writeup, which is part I takes up the years 1946 and 1947. Why two years ? Because this series will discuss a Lata Mangeshkar song from the year under discussion. Lata Mangeshkar made her debut in 1946 but all songs sung by her in 1946 are already covered in the blog. 1947 is the second year for her HFM career. Here just one song sung by her remains undiscussed. So I had to take up the year 1947 as well so that I could discuss a song of the year with the article.

Coming to 1946, here are the details of the songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar in HFM in 1946:-

Movie Music director Lata song in the blog Lata HFM songs in the year Lata solo songs Male duet Female duet Other songs Lyricists Song detail
Jeewan Yaatra Vasant Desai 1 1 1 0 0 0 Dewar Sharar Chidiya boley choon choon choon

Saanwariya oye baansuriya oye bajaaye gayo re Pt Sudarshan
Total Three movies Two music directors 4 4 4 0 0 0 Four lyricists All solos

The next year 1947, which was an important year for the country saw Lata Mangeshkar faring more or less how she had fared the previous year, as can be seen from the table below :-

Movie Music director Lata song in the blog Lata HFM songs in the year Lata solo songs Male duet Female duet Other songs Lyricists Song detail
Aap Ki Sewa Mein Datta Dawjekar 2 3 3 0 0 0 Mahipal Paa laagoon kar joree re

Total Three movies Three music directors 4 5 3 1 0 1 Three lyricists Three solos, plus her first male duet and first multiple singers song

If someone had done an year end analysis of Lata Mangeshkar’s career prospects at the end of 1947, he would have written off her chances as a playback singer. Such an analyst would have lots of facts backing his judgement. Lata Mangeshkar had a thin feeble voice, unlike the buland voices of the predominantly Punjabi female singers of those days. Forget laypersons, even a few studio owners, such as Filmistan’s boss rejected Lata’s voice outright, despite the recommendations of music director like Ghulam Haider. If one had to give opportunities to a new voice, then Geeta Roy showed far more promise. Unlike Lata, who was struggling on family and career fronts, Geeta Roy was getting her breaks almost without much struggle. And her voice was loved by all prominent music directors and movie producers.

So, Lata Mangeshkar did not have it easy in her career. She has faced lots of hardships. She has overcome them all. Moreover, she stood for her rights, took on powerful influential individuals in the induustry and got her way. Not just that, she survived and outlived them all.

Many people, with the benefit of hindsight may think that Lata Mangeshkar had a smooth career in film industry. Not at all. She has survived lots and lots of hardships that would have destroyed lesser mortals. One forgotten fact is that an attempt was made to poison her. It was a tactic that was earlier used against Master Madan in 1940s. Lata Mangeshkar’s enemies had planted a cook in her residence who was slowly poisoning her meals. It was an incident of early 1960s. The matter was detected in time and the cook ran away.

Her detractors accuse her of sabotaging the careers of some of her contemporaries. I think this accusation has an element of exxagaration. Even in the prime of her career, there were lots and lots of movies where she did not sing. She would typically sing songs in 50 odd movies in a year out of 100 odd movies released in that year. If these contemporaries were as good as they thought, they had enough opportunities to get work in the movies where Lata Mangeshkar did not sing. It takes far more than just raw singing ability to get work and get repeated. It takes lots of social networking which Lata Mangeshkar was good at. A few of her contemporaries known to be regarded as her competitors did not possess even a fraction of the networking abilities that Lata and her equally illustrious younger sister Asha Bhonsle possessed.

My observation about Lata Mangeshkar is that she was like an iceberg, and only the tip of her abilities were used in HFM. And even that has resulted into a body of work that is quite formidable.

One can see from the above two tables that Lata Mangeshkar was a struggler for most of the 1940s and she had very little to show for her struggles by the end of 1947. Lots and lots of things happened thereafter. She has the luck and the ability to turn it around spectacularly in the years to come. We will look at these facts in details in the future posts of this series.

It has been mentioned above that all Lata songs of 1946 have been covered in the blog. The table for 1947 shows that one Lata song from 1947 remains uuncovered. The song under discussion is that remaing song.

“Aap Ki Sewa Mein”(1947) was directed by Vasant Joglekar for Chandrma Pictures Bombay. This obscure movie had Dixit, Kesri, Shantarin, Saroj Borkar, Nimbalkar, Smson, D R Gokhale, Bhal Marathe, Vijaya, Baby Nalini etc in it. The movie had eight songs in it. Four songs have been covered in the past.

Lata Mangeshkar had sung three solos in the movie. Two of these songs have been covered in the blog in the past.

Here is the third and final Lata solo from “Aap Ki Sewa Mein”(1947) to appear in the blog. The song is penned by Mahipal (later a hero of mythological movies). Music is composed by Datta Davjekar.

Listening to the voice in this song, one can notice the influence of Suraiyya in her voice, who was a leading female playback singer of those days.

With this song, all the Lata Mangeshkar HFM songs of 1947 have now got covered in the blog.

In the next instalment of this series, we will discuss Lata Mangeshkar HFM songs sung by her in Hindi movies released in 1948.

This Week, That Year – 4
———————————–
20Sep – 26Sep, 2010

Post by post analysis of the weekly output – is an exercise that is getting more involved and detailed. As we progress, we are finding newer varieties and newer variations that add on to a now growing list of things to look at and check for. OK, so let us see what insight this week brings in.

Let’s first do the numbers. The challenge analysis and other details are presented in the table below. With one dot day (on 23rd Sep), this week saw as many as 34 posts. Except for one repeat, all songs are from different movies. So, 33 movies got featured that week. As many as 12 films made their debut. And of the 33 films that were showcased that week, 22 films have been yippeee’d over the past 10 years. Of the remaining 11, I am shifting two film to the twilight zone of Conditional Yippeee status, which I had proposed last week. The films are ‘Panchaayat’ from 1958 and ‘Dr Vidya’ from 1962 – I will give more details little later in write up.

I will highlight one change in notation. Last week I had proposed that for the songs which are listed for the film, but which are possibly not available in any format, will be denoted by ‘LFe’ – short for ‘Lost Forever’. Now there is a rethink about this terminology. At least one response to me was that ‘Lost Forever’ is a despairing notation, putting a sort of finality to the issue. So I propose to change this terminology to ‘UT’ indicating that the song is ‘Untraceable’ at least for now.

Two major milestones were announced this week. With the sixth song posted on 20th Sep, 2010, the blog reached the 3000th post. Given where we were at that time, ten years back, this was an enviable milestone in itself. Looking back, it may seem not very significant, on account of where we have now reached. But at that time, breaching the 3000 barrier was a great event. With the same song, we also had the first 1000th milestone for an individual artist. This very same song also became the 1000th song by Lata ji, posted on our blog. This was the first such accomplishment on the blog, for an artist.

We had just one guest post this week. Raja ji has done the post for the 3000th song plus the 1000th song of Lata Mangeshkar.

This week, we see many interesting variations and differences in the information that is available about the songs contained in specific films. Here are the details,

  1. ‘Deewaana’ (1952) – Geet Kosh lists 8 songs for this film. Then the footnote to this film indicates that one more song was recorded for this film in the voice of Shamshad Begum. The inference to be drawn is that this 9th song is an unused song from this film. This song is also available, and has been posted on our blog.
  2. ‘Panchaayat’ (1958) – the gap in information is quite remarkable here. There is one song listed in Geet Kosh that is simply not traceable anywhere. The words of the song are “Main Ye Soch Kar Us Ke Dar Se Utha Tha”. Ah yes, rings a bell. This song appears in the 1964 film ‘Haqeeqat’. I replayed the movie to check, but did not find even a snippet of this song.
However, viewing the film gave me some good information. The theme song of this film, “Mil Ke Baitho Jodo Bandhan” is a multi part song that appears in the film five times. We have this song on the blog, but we only have the portion that is heard in background as the film titles are being presented on screen. This song recurs on four more occasions later in the film.
So two updates to this film that must be put on the blog. First, the theme song has to be updated for all the multi part segments. Second, then this film should be declared Conditional Yippeee, because the song “Main Ye Soch Kar. . .”, in all likelihood will remain untraceable, as far as this film is concerned.
  3. ‘Parwaana’ (1947) – Geet Kosh lists 9 songs, whereas we on the blog had added two more which we have extracted from the film soundtrack. One of them – “Balam To Pe Sabar Pade” is a very special song. This is the very last recording of KL Saigal Sb. It is an incomplete recording. However, the director has used this as a background song near the end of the film, by modifying the situations somewhat.
  4. ‘Aaj Aur Kal’ (1963) – Geet Kosh lists 8 songs, whereas in the film there is one more song, actually a qawwaali, in the voice of Shamshad Begum and Usha Mangeshkar. So on the blog, we have one more song than the list in Geet Kosh.
  5. ‘Tu Nahin Aur Sahi’ (1960) – On the blog we have one additional song, actually a snippet that is played at the end of the film. This snippet is not listed in the Geet Kosh.
  6. ‘Dr Vidya’ (1962) – This song list mismatch here is quite confusing. There are seven songs listed in the Geet Kosh, out of which the song a serial no. 2 “Yahi Din Hain Bhanware Mann Arey Tum Nahin Samajhte” is not traceable. It does not appear to match with any other song in the film. And then there are two songs in the film which are not listed in the Geet Kosh. There is a fun qawwaali – “Yoon Hans Hans Kar Dekho Na Idhar”, which is performed on screen by Helen and Prem Chopra. And then there is this romantic song of promises to meet again – “Main Kal Phir Miloongi Isi Gulsitaan Mein”. So we have 8 songs of this film already posted, and there is one still pending whose fate is not known. Possibly then ‘Dr Vidya’ also merits to declared Conditional Yippeee.
  7. ‘Sone Ki Chidiya’ (1958) – This film has 8 songs listed in the Geet Kosh. However, on our blog, we have one more additional song posted, which is essentially a poem rendition.
  8. ‘Doctor’ (1941) – I had mentioned about this film in the previous episode of this series. There is a small bit of confusion in the song list of this film in the Geet Kosh. GK lists 11 songs for this film. This film was declared as Yippeee’d on 29th August, 2014. In that post, Atul ji had written that ten songs of this film are already posted, and the eleventh song was being posted, declaring this film to be Yippeee’d. However, as we examine the lists, there is a bit of confusion that prevails overall.
For starters, the song “Aai Nit Nai Rut Ki Bahaar” is listed twice in GK, once with Ila Ghosh as the singer, and once with Pankaj Mullick as the singer. This threw me off so completely, that I spent three four days two weeks ago, trying to trace the Pankaj Babu version of this song. Most responses I got from within the circle of collector friends was that this song does not exist. Secondly, the iconic Pankaj Babu song – “Aayi Bahaar Aaj Aayi Bahaar” is not listed in GK. I went over the GK entries in detail, including the addenda and the corrigenda. But could locate no other information.
After some back and forth discussions, it is concluded that there is an error in the GK listings, in that the song listed in GK at serial no. 11 – “Aayi Nit Nari Rut Ki Bahaar” in the voice of Pankaj Babu, is incorrect, and that the words of this song should be “Aayi Bahaar Aaj Aayi Bahaar”. If this change is made, then the listings can be reconciled correctly.
There is still one more variation in the GK listing and the blog list. The GK listing shows the two songs viz. “Kab Tak Niraasha Ki Andhiyaari” and “Bhai Jagat Ujiyaari Dekho” as two separate songs. On our blog, these two songs appear in the same post, so essentially the blog list does not show the latter song.

Now a word about the song covered in this post. The film is ‘Zindagi Ya Toofaan’ from 1958. As per the Geet Kosh, this film has 10 songs listed. All the songs come from the pen of J Nakshab, a name that we are also familiar as Nakshab Jarchavi. Music is composed by Nashaad.

The film is produced under the banner of Serafim Pictures, Bombay and is directed by Nakshab Jarchavi, the lyricist. The cast of actors is briefly given as Nutan, Pradeep Kumar, Om Prakash, Minoo Mumtaz, Johnny Walker, and Yakub. The film tells the story about the love of a young man, role played by Pradeep Kumar, for a dancing girl, role played by Nutan. Nine songs of this film are already posted here on our blog. This is the tenth and the final song of this film to come on board.

The song itself is a wonderful expression in words about the exchanges that happen between the lover and the beloved. Each couplet, each line is such a beautiful visualization of that relationship. The video clip for this song could not be located. So it is not feasible to comment on the picturization of this song. Given the music and rendition, one can surmise that this song is presented as a mujra on screen. Expectedly, the song is performed by Nutan and Minoo Mumtaz. Both are dancing girls entertaining the guests, which would include Praeep Kumar and Yakub.

This wonderful ghazal presented as a mujra, is the tenth and the final song of this film to come on board, and we can declare this film to be Yippeee’d now.
