There are a good number of feature films made on Mahatma Gandhi and his philosophy. I have watched a couple of Gandhi films – Richard Attenborough’s ‘Gandhi’ (1982) and ‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ (2006). There is film titled ‘Road to Sangam’ (2010) which I had not heard of until recently. The title of the film gave me an impression of a film on a road journey to the confluences of the holy rivers in India (for example, Panch Prayags in Uttarakhand). But it turned out to be a Hindi film connected with Mahatma Gandhi.
According to Amit Rai, the writer and director of the film, he got the idea to develop the story for ‘Road to Sangam’ (2010) when he saw a TV news report that an urn containing the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi was found in a bank vault in Odisha. I checked the veracity of the news and found a report on The Times of India, October 1, 2009, which stated that an urn containing the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi was deposited in then Imperial Bank of India (now SBI) in its Cuttack branch in 1950. In 1994, the banks’ manager found the urn and reported the matter to the Government of Odisha. The Government did not show much interest, and the matter was forgotten. Tushar Gandhi, the great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi filed a petition in the Odisha High Court for getting possession of the urn. In 1997, the Court directed the urn to be handed over to Tushar Gandhi. He took the urn to Prayag and immersed the ashes at the Triveni Sangam on January 30, 1997 on Mahatma Gandhi’s 49th death anniversary.
Amit Rai had also come to know that the Ford vehicle that carried Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes in urns in 1948 was lying in a depleted condition in a museum in Allahabad. A mechanic, Hashmat Ullah of Allahabad restored the vehicle in a running condition (Source: Hindustan Times, August 11, 2009). With the serial bomb blasts that had taken place in November 2007 in around court premises of Varanasi, Lucknow and Faizabad, Amit Rai had good material to weave a semi-fictional story for the film. Before commencing the shooting of the film in Allahabad, Amit Rai met the real mechanic, Hashmat Ullah and decided to rename the character of the mechanic in the script as Hashmat Ullah.
Director, Amit Rai has been associated with Hindi theatres in Mumbai. He has also worked as Assistant Directors to Anurag Basu and Anurag Kashyap. ‘Road To Sangam’ (2010) is his debut film as a director. His latest released Hindi film is ‘OMG-2’ (2023).
The main cast of ‘Road To Sangam’ (2010) consisted of Paresh Rawal, Om Puri and Pawan Malhotra with the supporting cast of Swati Chitnis, Javed Shaikh, Masood Akhtar, Vijay Mishra, Rajan Bhise, Poonam Sharma etc. Tushar Gandhi, the great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi made a cameo appearance as himself. The film was premiered on October 2, 2009, at the Asian Film Festival held in Mumbai. The film had theatrical release in January 2010.
I have recently watched the film which I found to be aesthetically made. The story of the film is as under:
Hashmat Ullah (Paresh Rawal), an expert in repairing vehicle engines in Allahabad, is entrusted with a job to repair the engine of an old Ford vehicle, lying at Allahabad Museum. He has to repair the engine with a stipulated period of time which he accepts without being aware of the importance of this old Ford vehicle.
As soon as he takes up the repairs, bomb blasts take place in the city because of which some people are arrested. The court rejects their bail applications of those arrested and they are remanded to police custody for 14 days. All of them are Muslims and the mosque committee feels that innocent people have been arrested. The Maulana (Pawan Malhotra) of the main mosque of Allahabad, after discussing with the members of the Mosque Committee, issues fatwa to all Muslims in the city to close their shops for 14 days to protest against the prosecution of innocent Muslims. Hashmat, being the General Secretary of the Mosque Committee, is affected as he has to keep his shop closed as per the decree and he is in quandary as to how to fulfil his promise to repair the engine on time.
During his TV interview with a journalist of a local TV Channel, Hashmat comes to know the importance of the work which he has undertaken to complete it on time. The engine which he has to repair belongs to the same Ford vehicle which took Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes in 20 urns to scatter all over India. The same Ford vehicle would take the remaining one urn to the confluence of Rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and the hidden Saraswati at Prayag and will be immersed by Tushar Gandhi, the great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi. Hashmat’s request to Mosque Committee chaired by the influential Kasuri (Om Puri) for exempting his shop from the decree to complete the repair work on time is rejected by the Maulana.
After carefully considering the pros and cons of opening his shop for repairs, Hashmat decides to tell the museum authorities that he would not be able to complete the repairs as per the stipulated time. He visits the museum to tell the authorities accordingly. As they had gone out, Hashmat spends time in the museum depicting the important events in the life of Mahatma Gandhi. This makes him emotional, and he returns home without meeting the museum authorities. He is in two minds – whether to open his shop to repair the engine defying the Maulana’s decree or tell the museum authorities his inability to complete the repair work in stipulated time. After discussion with his wife (Swati Chitnis), Hashmat decides to resume repair works. However, the members of the committee confiscate keys of Hashmat’s shop. In protest, Hashmat sits on fast in front of his shop until the keys are returned to him.
After a couple of days, the keys are returned to Hashmat without the knowledge of Mosque Committee, and he begins the repairs work. After overcoming many hurdles like an important worker refusing to work, scuffles with some members of the Muslim community in which he gets injured, facing some health issues because of pressure from the Muslim community etc, Hashmat manages to complete the repair work and the Ford Vehicle is ready to carry the urn of Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes to the Sangam for immersion. He convinces Kasuri, members of the Mosque committee and Muslim community to join the procession. The film ends with crowds from all communities joining the procession and watching the immersion of Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes at Prayag.
‘Road To Sangam’ (2010) is a good attempt from the debutant director, Amit Rai to take up a sensitive story. Paresh Rawal has given one of his best performances in the film in which he makes his presence felt almost in all scenes. Another surprise performance was from Pawan Malhotra (of ‘Nukkad’ fame) in the role of Maulana. He has suitably modulated his voice to sound like a maulana. Om Puri in the role of an influential community member gave his usual performance. The film miserably failed at the box office as per the Box Office India Report. Probably, being a low budget film, it was not properly marketed. It was released in limited numbers of theatres. The net result is that the film is almost forgotten today.
The film has 7 songs written by Sudhir Nema (3). Allama Iqbal (1), Narsinh Mehta (1), John Henry Newman (1) and the remaining one, the traditional song. Songs have been set to music by Vijay Mishra (3), Nitin Kumar Gupta-Prem Haria (3) and Sandesh Shandilya (1). All the songs are in the nature of prayers. One of the 7 songs of the film is an English Choral song.
I am presenting the first song, ‘lab pe aati hai dua ban ke tamanna meri’ from the film to appear on the Blog. It is a well-known nazm by Allama Iqbal. The poem has been rendered by Hariharan which is set to music by Vijay Mishra who has also acted in the film in the role of Paresh Rawal’s son.
The background to the song in the film is that Hashmat is disappointed by the rejection of his request by Mosque Committee chaired by Kasuri (Om Puri) and Maulana (Pawan Malhotra) to open his shop for repairs to the engine. Simultaneously, the urn containing the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi has been kept for display in the premises of Allahabad Museum with prayers from all religions and this is one of the prayers in progress.
In rekhta.org, this nazm has a title ‘Bachche Ki Dua’ (children’s prayer to the God). It is a universal prayer seeking from the God to light-up the darkness in the world through the light in one’s own life, to make one’s own country adorable, help the needy and old persons and, seeking blessing to protect from evils and put on the path of good deeds.
It may be noted that Allama Iqbal wrote this poem in 1902 in undivided India. Hence, the word ‘watan’ used in the poem was intended to be referring to undivided India (Hindustan). The intent of the prayer being universal, the ‘watan’ in the nazm becomes a generic one and can refer to any country in which this prayer is rendered.

dardmandon se za’eefon se muhabbat karna
mere Allah buraayi se bachaana mujhko

Today’s song is a comedy song from the film Gazal-1945. It is ‘ sung ‘ by comedian N.M.Charlie.
Though the playback system started in India in 1935, it had not become popular immediately for various reasons. Most important reason was, due to the poor quality of stage type songs in films, not many records were made and sold. Additionally, there was an acute shortage of playback singers for the films. Slowly, over a period, the picture changed and by 1940, the playback system was firmly entrenched in films. This not only increased the number of songs recorded and the subsequent increase in their sales, but also newer playback singers were discovered and encouraged to sing for films.
This actually gave a true relief to the composers, who were forced to make do with existing singers who were mostly Non-Singers, meaning they were neither trained by any professional singer nor they had any singing talents. Thus all actors now had playbacks from professional singers to the merriment of composers !
However, some producers still wanted their comedians to sing their own songs themselves. Thus you had comedians like Sundar, Yakub and Charlie singing for themselves, till the 50’s decade. Luckily other comedians like Bhudo Advani, Dixit, V.H.Desai or Master Bhagwan could not dare to sing songs !
1945 was the period when Noor Mohammed Charlie was at the peak of his popularity. He not only sang his songs, but he also became a Hero in a few pictures and stories were amended to give him more scope in the films. In the 1950s and the 1960s, this honour went to comedian Johnny Walker. Thank God, he did not sing songs ( though he spoke in his chirpy voice in some songs). Mohammed Rafi compensated enough for him by having a special style of singing and a special voice for Johnny Walker songs.
These days everyone likes the comedy of Amitabh Bachhan. His many films became Hits due to his comedy work. Today most of the Heroes do the comedy part in the film themselves. But till 1970, there used to be a separate slot for a comedian.
Today’s generation knows comedians like Paresh Raval, Anupam Kher etc. For them older comedians are Johnny Lever, Satish Shah or Rajpal Yadav. Before that, they can think of Johnny Walker, Mehmood, Keshto Mukherjee, Asit Sen, Dhumal, Jagdeep, Asrani or Deven Verma. But the art of Comedy had started much earlier, in the 1930s and 1940s. Comedians like Ghori, Dikshit, Fatty Prasad, V H Desai, Bhudo Advani were famous. Amongst all the comedians of that era, there was ONE superstar of Comedy- NOOR MOHAMMED CHARLIE.
Noor Mohd. was born on 7-1-1911 at Ranavav, near Porbandar, Gujarat, in a Memon family (Later, comedian Mukri was also a Memon from Konkan area). Not interested in studies, he was very fond of seeing films, even by stealing money from house, at times-if need be. He was sent to Bombay and worked as an Umbrella Repairer in a shop. His desire to become an actor was so strong that one day he straightaway went to the Imperial Film Company’s owner and asked for a job. In the tradition of those days, he was asked if he could sing… His reply was,” I can sing, act, ride, run, fight, cry, laugh, quarrel, dance, play or swim”. He was hired instantly at a salary of Rs. 40 pm.
From 1925 to 1931 he did 9 silent films. In one of these films he did the acting of Charlie Chaplin. It became so popular that he made this get up his Trademark and developed Toothbrush Moustache ,like Charlie Chaplin. he also added ‘Charlie’ to his name. He did his first talkie film ” Zarina” in 1932 and then there was no looking back.
Initially with Sagar Movietone, he shifted to Ranjit and did 17 films with Ranjit. He became so famous and Popular that films were sold in his name. He was the First superstar amongst the comedians. He started to get special songs shot on him in almost every film-much before Johnny Walker in the 1950s. He sang his own songs. He left Ranjit and was the first actor to become a ‘Free-lance’ breaking the Studio system.
Some of his films and songs were famous all over India. In the film Sanjog, he sang ” Palat, tera dhyan kidhar hai “. This line became so famous that young boys in colleges used this line for calling girls,in those days. In the film Dhindhora, he sang ” ek do teen char panch chhe saat aath nau dus gyara bara, teri nazar ne mujhe mara”. ( Raj Kapoor used ‘Ek do teen aaja mausam hai rangeen’ and later Madhuri Dixit’s “Ek do teen” was very famous.) In the film Taqdeer he sang- “Thank you mention not” and ” I am very very Sorry”. This too became popular.
There was a time when Charlie drew more salary than even Prithwiraj kapoor ! He did about 62 films in all. He was the Hero opposite Swarnalata in Chaand Taaraa-45, hero opposite Leela Chitnis in Ghazal-45 and hero opposite Chandraprabha (Saraswati devi’s sister) in Dulha-46.
He directed only one film, while in Ranjit-Dhandora-41. Charlie sang 36 songs in 15 films.
After partition he opted for Pakistan. he did 6 Urdu, 2 Sindhi and 1 Punjabi films there but was not popular. He came back to India in 1960, but by then here too the position had changed. He did 3 films here. His last film in India was Ranjit’s last film ” Akeli mat Jaiyo”-63 and then that was the end of his film career and that of Ranjit studios too. Due to Visa problems, he had to leave India. He went to the USA to live with his son, who had a dairy farm business. He had 6 sons and 6 daughters. Only 1 son-Latif Charlie became an actor In Pakistan. (He died on 19-7-2011). Charlie came back to Pakistan when his wife expired, but later he himself died in Karachi on 30-6-1983.
If he had not gone to Pakistan, who knows he would have prospered here. Mehmood and Johnny Walker consider him as GURU and have copied his actions in films many times. Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt were also his fans. His film Manorama-44 was remade as Manchala in 1953 with Agha in his role. Thokar-39 was remade as Mai Baap and Taqdeer-43 was remade as Duniya ka Mela, with Mehmood in Charlie’s role.
When he died in Pakistan, no film personality from the Pakistan Film industry attended his funeral. He died unsung !
Film Gazal-1945 was made by Raja Movietone, Bombay, a banner owned by its director Jahoor Raja. Like some of the older artistes, he was probably one of the last multifaceted artistes. ZAHOOR RAJA (Born 7 July 1918 Abbottabad – Died 1992 England) Pre Partition Hindi/Urdu Film Actor, Producer, Director, Editor, Writer, Singer, Lyricist & Music Composer. He graduated from editing and story writing to become a producer-director in 1943.
Zahoor Raja was born in a wealthy family in Abbottabad, Pakistan. After schooling , he studied BA from Rawalpindi but could not complete his graduation as he was more interested in sports than in studies. His father, a Police Inspector, was keen in admitting him in Dehradun for a career in the army. But he ran away from home and landed in Bombay with a letter of introduction to Film maker A R Kardar. Since he was a very handsome and well built man, getting into the Bombay film industry was not difficult. At that time, Kardar was directing Punjabi film ‘Mirza Sahiban’ (1939) for Ranjit Movietone and . Kardar took Zahoor Raja as Hero in the film.
Within a year after the release of the film, V Shantaram invited him to join Prabhat Films and was taken on a contract of 3 years. His association with V Shantaram was not beneficial and he did not get much work. Kardar once again came to his rescue and got him employed in National Studios and got him a role in ‘Pooja’ (1940). Thereafter, he got a role in Minerva Moveitone’s ‘Sikandar’ (1941). During the making of the film ‘Sikandar’ (1941), he fell in love with his co-star Meena (Meena Shourie) and married her. The marriage did not last long and Meena later married another handsome actor, Al Nasir in the mid 1940s.
Zahoor Raja later worked as a Hero in ‘Sewa’ (1941). During this time, while looking for a change from his acting career, he got a chance to direct the film ‘Badal’ (1942) produced under Eastern Pictures where he also acted in the lead role. Though the film failed at the box office, his direction was appreciated by the critics. In 1943, he floated his own film production company, Raja Movietone and made its maiden film ‘Mazaq’ (1943) which he also directed, acted in a negative role and composed its music. He also acted in the film Bhai-44. His banner produced ‘O Panchhi’ (1944), ‘Ghazal’ (1945) and ‘Dhadkan’ (1946).
In most of the films in which he acted, Zahoor Raja was paired with Radha Rani. He also sang the song ‘Bhulaane waale hamen bhi na yaad aaya karo’ along with Naseem Akhthar in the Movie ‘Ghazal’ (1945) composed by Gyan Dutt. His last movies in India before moving to Pakistan were ‘Anmol Ghadi’ (1946) and Director-1947. He acted in 9 films, directed 5 films, sang 15 songs in 5 films (Pooja-40, Sewa-42, Badal-42, Gazal-45 and Director-47), wrote lyrics in 1 film (Dhadkan-46) and was MD for 1 film( Mazaaq-43)
After partition, Zahoor Raja returned to Pakistan in 1950 and he was active in the Pakistani film industry until 1966. After 1966, he migrated to England, married an English lady and later died in 1992 in England.
The storyline of film gazal could not not be found anywhere on the internet. The film had the cast of Leela Chitnis, N.M.Charlie, Radharani, Zahoor Raja, Nurjahan sr., Nagendra, Razia Bano (elder sister of Suraiya Zulfi) and many others. There were 4 lyricists but HFGK does not mention their individual credits for every song.
Today’s so-called Comedy song is sung by Charlie. Like all his songs, much of the lyrics are plain prose rather than any poetry. But then, in those days, people liked it that way from a popular comedian ! Try to enjoy….

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # # Dil Ka Raaja -1972#
—————————————
Today’s song is from the ‘1972’ movie ‘Dil Ka Raaja’.
This is another movie which I came across while presenting the ‘missing movies of 1972’ on the blog. Though this movie made its debut on the blog way back on 14.10.2014, only one song from this movie has been posted on the blog. I do not remember to have listened to other songs from this movie. That is the reason for this post where today we will enjoy the second song from this movie.
Music for this movie is also composed by R.D. Burman.
‘Dil Ka Raaja-1972’ was directed by P. Madhwan for ‘Nadiadwala Associates, Bombay’. It was produced by A.A. Nadiadwala.
It had Raj Kumar, Leena Chandavarkar, Ajit, Bindu, Jagdeep, Indrani Mukherjee, Randhir, Meena T., Sheikh, Surendra Rahi, Manjeet, Omkar, Pandit Iqbal, Jankidas, Uma Dutt, Rajesh, Maqbool, Master Anil, Master Ripal, and Waheeda Rehman (in special appearance).
Story and screenplay of this movie was written by Balamurugan. Dialogues of this movie were written by Kaushal Bharti.
Editing of this movie was done by Babubhai Thakkar.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 29.11.1972.
As I mentioned above one song from this movie has been posted on the blog earlier and that was presented by Shri Satyajit Rajurkar on the blog.
In his post (which is his passionate post about Rafi Saab) he had also mentioned about the story of this movie which I am reproducing below from his post.
This movie is about two brothers who try to retrieve the lost glory of their “king” father through hard work and sincerity. After generously donating all the wealth accumulated by three generations of his family, Ramnagar-based Raja Vichitra Singh (Raaj Kumar), faces humiliation at the hands of Thakur Gajendra Singh (Ajit) when he is unable to pay a dowry for his sister, Gauri (Indrani Mukherjee). He does fulfill his promise by mortgaging his mansion, Raghupathi Bhavan, but the shock kills his wife, Lakshmi (Waheeda Rehman). Humiliated, with no one coming forward to help him, he leaves Ramnagar, along with his three children, Raja (Raaj Kumar), Bajrang (Jagdedep), and Vijaya (Meena T) and re-locates to Bombay, hoping to accumulate Three Lakh Rupees, so that he can get the Bhavan back as well as restore his honour. The rest of the story is about how Vichitra Singh, now a tonga driver and his children, who end up working as a coolies and labourers, try and save the money to enable them to get the mansion back.

In recent days the ‘Yippeeee’ activity has taken a backseat on the blog. The ‘Yippeeee’ project too has been slowed down, and it is almost one year now when our ‘Yippeeee Guru’ had appeared last giving his darshan to ‘Yippeeee members like me’. 😊
I wished we should be ‘Yippeeee’ing’ at least one movie in a week if not daily. The last Yippeeee moment on the blog was on 27th July’2021 when the final song of movie ‘Jai Santoshi Maa-1975’ got covered and the movie got YIPPEED.
There are quite a few movies waiting for their final song to be covered in the blog and thus getting admitted to the club of YIPPEED movies.
Today we induct one more movie to the hall of fame of YIPPEELAND. This movie is ‘Saudagar-1973’.
I had watched this movie years back on a TV channel. But until I had not watched this movie, I mainly associated this movie with its songs ‘Har haseen cheez ka main talabgaar hoon’ and ‘Sajna hai mujhe sajna ke liye’ . I think these two songs were the well-known songs from this movie. But after watching the movie I do like other couple of songs from this movie and mainly the ‘majhi song’ – ‘door hai kinaaraa’ which grows up on us as we listen to it more and more. I like the movie and story content and presentation too.
This movie debuted on the blog on 04.04.2009 with its first song Har haseen cheez ka main talabgaar hoon. After that within a gap of less than two weeks the second song of this movie was posted on the blog and this was ‘Sajna hai mujhe sajna ke liye’ which got posted on 15.04.2009.
One more known song from this movie i.e., Tera mera saath rahe followed the second song just after a gap of one day and this was posted on 17.04.2009. The fourth song of this movie followed the third song and was posted on next day i.e., on 18.04.2009. The fourth song posted on the blog was ‘Door hai kinaaraa, gehri nadi ki dhaaraa’.
After this fourth song the movie had to wait the next ten years when its fifth song was posted on the blog. This song was presented by Shri. Sudhir ji. He discussed the story and other details of this movie in his post. This fifth song was ‘champa nahin, chameli nahin, main genda nahin, gulaab nahin… main hoon phool baano’. I would request our readers to visit this post to read about the movie in detail. This song was posted in ‘Blog Ten Years Challenge’ on 04.04.2019. This was the fifth song from this movie posted on the blog.
The sixth song of this movie then appeared after a gap of more than a year and was posted on the blog on 09.10.2019. This song was ‘Husn hai ya koi qayaamat hai’. This song-post was presented by Peevesie’s Mom ji as tribute to the music director Ravindra Jain on his Remembrance Day. Peevesie’s Mom ji had also discussed about the story and other details of the movie in her post. I will not repeat them all again here.
Today’s song is the seventh and final song of this movie to be posted on the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Padma Khanna lip-syncs the song on the screen. Amitabh Bachchan is also seen in the picturization.
“Saudagar-1973” was a ‘Rajshri Pictures Pvt Ltd, Bombay’ ‘s presentation. It was directed by Sudhendu Roy. It had Nutan, Amitabh Bachchan, Padma Khanna, Trilok Kapoor, Murad, Dev Kishan, V. Gopal, C.S. Dubey, Pardesi, Narbada Shankar, Santosh Ghosh, Nadir, Rasraj, Paritosh Chaudhary, Ashok Mitra, Samar Roy, Jugnu, Chandu Ilaahabadi, Ramesh Verma, Shriram Shastri, Chaturvedi, Bihari, Leela Mishra, Paro, Habiba, Salma, Sitara, Suraiyya, Master Saka, Master Firdaus, Baby Shameena and many others.
This movie had seven songs. All songs of this movie were written and composed by Ravindra Jain.
Here is the list of songs of ‘Saudagar-1973’ as mentioned in HFGK-Vol-V (1971-1980).

din din ye preet badhaa le
kudrat ne kiya ehsaan
mere honthh to yoonhi laal
kyun laayo sainyyaa paan
mere honthh to yoonhi laal
main to thhi aazaad pari

tere indarjaal mein phans gayi
haaye main bholi bhaali
toone aise dorey daale
dil sambhlaa nahin sambhaale ae
tu maan bhale naa maan
mere honthh to yoonhi laal
kyun laayo sainyyaa paan
mere honthh to yoonhi laal
jaan gayi main tere man ki
kyun tu paan khilaawe
honthhon ka ras paan ke ras mein
ghol ke peenaa chaahe ae
honthhon ka ras paan ke ras mein
ghol ke peenaa chaahe
tere pyaar ke dhang niraale
o albele matwaale
tu to hai badaa naadaan
mere honthh to yoonhi laal laal
kyun laayo sainyyaa paan
mere honthh to yoonhi laal
piya honthh hain tere kaale

aur apni badhaa le shaan
mere honthh to yoonhi laal

Hullo Atuldom
There is a test match on, ‘Down Under’, and I am recalling the words of Sunny Gavaskar. He had hosted a short tele-series in the late 80s. He had also written his autobiography “Sunny Days”.
What I am quoting here and often prior to today, is something that I have read in “Sunny Days” or heard it on the said serial. It could also be Sunny Gavaskar in his avatar as a commentator. His advice to the batsmen used to be that “One should always reach the milestone of say a 50 or 100 with a four, six or at the most run two runs. This would cover up for any score that the scorer had inadvertently credited to extras”. Possibly this may have been due to his experiences at the start of his career when scorers used to do their work manually.
My reason for quoting Sunny Bhai (as he is sometimes addressed by his co-commentators) is that it has been a while since my last post, that had been a milestone for me. And following Sunnybhai’s advice my quick single (next post) should have come a few days back. But that has not been. I had many posts in mind for various birthdays and anniversaries but I have been away. But, as the elders say ‘better late than never’.
So coming to today’s post it is to wish an actor who is blessed with a good voice almost equaling Amitabh Bachchan’s baritone, a good height again almost equal to Mr. Bachchan and looks that far surpasses many of his contemporaries. He was born in Quetta in present day Pakistan a year before independence, educated in Hyderabad (in India) and was a Tennis and Swimming champion.
His career in the entertainment industry began with Radio Shows (which he got thanks to his voice) and stage plays. He is also trained at FTII. On relocating to Mumbai his experience on radio and stage kept him going and his looks helped him gain modelling assignments; I remember him in ads for ‘Lifebouy soap’ and also ‘Charminar cigarettes’. His Bollywood debut happened in 1977 with “Jeewan Mukt” but it was his role in “Laawaaris” as a potter that is my first recall of him. Hope that rings a bell in the mind of the readers.
Yes, I am speaking of the National Award winning, still handsome Suresh Oberoi. He turns a year older today. He has done a few romantic roles too in his career which are overshadowed by the character roles he has played. We can recall him as ‘Mukhi’ in “Mirch Masaala”, the tormentor in “Coolie”,”Shraddhanjali”, etc. He has played an inspector in a number of movies and may be holding the record for the third highest by an actor after Jagdish Raj and Iftikaar. 🙂
Today’s song is from the 1982 released, Satyen Bose directed “Tumhare Bina”. It had Suresh Oberoi and Swaroop Sampat playing a couple and parents to a little boy. He is a film producer whose wife is suspicious of his relation with a beautiful actress (Simple Kapadia). The couple separate and Robin Dutt (Suresh Oberoi) is forced to abduct his son, go into hiding etc. The movie had songs penned by Govind Moonis and tuned by Raam Laxman. Bhupinder Singh, Behroz Chatterjee (never heard this name before), Manhar Udhas, and Gurpreet Kaur (not heard this name too) were the playback singers used. Apparently the movie was a remake of Kramer v/s Kramer.
Today we have a song which shows that Suresh Oberoi would have made a good romantic hero too. It is duet by Bhupinder and Behroz Chatterjee.
