Today (9 march 2023) early morning, the first WhatsApp message I read in my family group was about producer-director-writer-actor Satish Kaushik who breath his last on the way to a hospital in Delhi early morning following a heart attack. His funeral is likely to take place in Mumbai later in the day. Next month, he would have completed 67 years, an age when many actors have rediscovered themselves in film industries. I felt very sorry that one of the few genial faces of the Hindi film industry and an actor who regaled us through his unique style of acting and dialogue delivery was no more with us. For now, only his films will keep his memory live.

Satish Kaushik (13/04/1956 – 09/03/2023) belonged to Haryana and was trained at the National School of Drama (NSD), Delhi. He followed it with the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). I have observed through photographs that Satish Kaushik was very close to his alumni from NSD like Anupam Kher, Pankaj Kapoor, Sudhir Mishra, Neena Gupta etc.

Off hand, I think I had watched him for the first time on the screen in ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron’ (1983). Later, I watched him in ‘Maasoom’ (1983), ‘Mr India’ (1987) and some more films. I have also seen some films of him with Govinda which I have enjoyed in their joint performances due to his great timing of dialogues. Probably, I watched him for the last time on OTT platform in ‘Tehzeeb’ (2003). Besides the films, I have watched him in some episodes of TV serials like ‘Ye Jo Hai Zindagi’, and ‘Katha Sagar’. He must have acted in more than 100 films in his lifetime. Whether films or TV serials, he made his presence felt to the audience.

Satish Kaushik also directed about 15 Hindi film beginning with ‘Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja’ (1993) and produced about 6 films. He was also active in Hindi theatre.

As a tribute to the departed soul, I am presenting a song from his film, Umar’ (2006) which is picturised on him as a background song. The song is ‘Khumari chadh ke utar gayi’ which is rendered by Jagjit Singh. The song is written by Shaily Shailendra and is set to music by Shamir Tandon.

Song-Khumaari chadh ke utar gayi (Umar)(2006) Singer-Jagjit Singh, Lyrics-Shaily Shailendra, MD-Shamir Tandon

Lyrics (based on Audio Clip)

khumaari chadh ke utar gayi
zindagi yoon hi guzar gayi
khumaari chadh ke utar gayi
zindagi yoon hi guzar gayi
kabhi sote sote kabhi jaagte
khwaabon ke peechhe youn hi bhaagte
apni to saari umar gayi
apni to saari umar gayi
khumari chadh ke utar gayi
zindagi yoon hi guzar gayi

rangeen bahaaron ki khwaahish rahi
haath magar kuchh aaya nahin
rangeen bahaaron ki khwaahish rahi
haath magar kuchh aaya nahin
kehne ko apne thhe saathhi kayi
saathh kisi ne nibhaaya nahin
koi bhi hamsafar nahin
koi bhi hamsafar nahin
kho gayi har dagar kahin
kabhi sote sote kabhi jaagte
khwaabon ke peechhe yoon hi bhaagte
apni to saari umar gayi
apni to saari umar gayi
khumaari chadh ke utar gayi
zindagi yoon hi guzar gayi

logon ko aksar dekha hai
ghar ke liye rote huye
logon ko aksar dekha hai
ghar ke liye rote huye
ham to magar beghar hi rahe
gharwaalon ke hote huye
gharwaalon ke hote huye
aaya apna nazar nahin
aaya apna nazar nahin
apni jahaan tak nazar gayi
kabhi sote sote kabhi jaagte
khwaabon ke peechhe yoon hi bhaagte
apni to saari umar gayi
apni to saari umar gayi
khumaari chadh ke utar gayi
zindagi youn hi guzar gayi

pehle to ham sun lete thhe
shor mein bhi shehnaaiyaan
pehle to ham sun lete thhe
shor mein bhi shehnaaiyaan
ab to hamko lagti hai
bheed mein bhi tanhaaiyaan
jeene ki hasrat kidhar gayi
jeene ki hasrat kidhar gayi
dil ki kali bikhar gayi
kabhi sote sote kabhi jaagte
khwaabon ke peechhe yoon hi bhaagte
apni to saari umar gayi
apni toh saari umar gayi
khumaari chadh ke utar gayi
zindagi yoon hi guzar gayi
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm

“Khan Dost”(1976) was directed by Dulal Guha for Ramayan Chitra Mandir, Bombay. The movie had Raj Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Mithu Mukherji (new discovery), Satyen Kappu, Sulochana, Asit Sen, Jagdish Raj, Maruti, Prakash, Shekhar Purohit, Rajan Haksar, Duggal, Saminder Pande, Chandulal, Rajrani, Amar Sen, Sameer, Baby Lubna etc, with special appearances by Subhash Ghai, Jagdeep, Sundar, Leela Mishra and Yogita Bali.

The movie had three songs in it. One song has been covered in the past.

Here is the second song from “Khan Dost”(1976) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Manna Dey. Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

The song is picturised as a poignant song on Shatrughan Sinha who plays a prisoner and who is seen looking back at his wasted life with regret in this picturisation. The pictorisation also shows Satyen Kappu playing a jailor and Raj Kapoor playing his subordinate.

Incidentally, Hindi movie jails look like a police station where a prisoner is seen kept behind bars in a small room. That is because Hindi moviemakers cannot differentiate between a police station and a jail. 🙂

Song-Meri zindagi tujhpe roye (Khan Dost)(1976) Singer-Manna Dey, Lyrics-Indeewar, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

meri zindagi mujhpe roye ae
roye

meri zindagi mujhpe roye ae
roye
meri zindagi mujhpe roye ae
roye
main kaam kisi ke na aa saka
main kaam kisi ke na aa saka
main pyaar kisi ka na pa saka
koi aise umr na khoye
meri zindagi mujhpe roye ae
roye

jo karz liya hai saanson ka
wo karz chuka na paaya
jo karz liya hai saanson ka
wo karz chuka na paaya
baaqi hi raha har karz mera
koi farz nibha na paaya
ab waqt kahaan kuchh kar sakoon
ab waqt kahaan kuchh kar sakoon
koi zakhm kisi ka bhar sakoon
ab pachhtaaye kya hoye
meri zindagi mujhpe roye ae
roye

kuchh bhi na kamaaya jeevan mein
maine sab kuchh hi ganvaaya
kuchh bhi na kamaaya jeevan mein
maine sab kuchh hi ganvaaya
jisne dikhlaai duniya mujhe
us maa ka dil bhi dukhaaya
jis pe hon gunaahon ke saaye
jis pe hon gunaahon ke saaye
wo chain kahaan se paaye
dariya bhi ye daag na dhoye
meri zindagi mujhpe roye ae
roye
main kaam kisi ke na aa saka
main pyaar kisi ka na pa saka
koi aise umr na khoye
meri zindagi mujhpe roye ae
roye
roye

Blog Day : 3631 Post No. : 14457

Today 27th June (27th June, 1939 – 4th Jan, 1994) is the 79th birth anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman, whom we fondly remember as ‘Pancham’.

On this occasion here is a song from the 1985 Movie ‘Sitamgar’. Th film was directed by Raj N Sippy for Bikramjeet Films International, Bombay and produced by Bikram Singh Dehal. It had Dharmendra, Parveen Babi, Rishi Kapoor, Poonam Dhillon, Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Prem Chopra, Jagdish Raj, Gurbachan, Ranvir Raj, Azad, Tilak Mehta, Raj Kaul, Shamsuddin, Nath Kamle, Ved Akash, Ashok Gaekwad, Master Alankar and Baby Geeta. Narendra Nath, Sonia Shania and Sudhir make special appearance in this movie.

Ved Aakash and Pankaj Kharbanda were the Chief Assistant Directors of this movie. Ashok Gaekwad was the Associate Director for this movie. V.N. Mayekar was the editor while Sakharam Borse assisted him in editing. Story and Screenplay of this movie was written by Mirza Brothers and dialogues were written by Dr. Rahi Masoom Raza. The movie was passed by the Censor Board on 08.03.1985.

This movie had six songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by RD Burman (Manohari, Babloo and Martin were assistants). Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar gave their voices to the songs in this movie.

As the movie makes its debut on the blog today I can select only one song for today’s presentation. Going by the songs of this movie that I have already heard, I can say that some of them are very nice songs.

In 1985 the following movie with music composed by RD Burman were released,

  1. Rahi Badal Gaye
  2. Ram Tere Kitne Naam
  3. Hum Dono
  4. Ek Se Bhale Do
  5. Lava
  6. Zabardast
  7. Sitamgar
  8. Saagar
  9. Alag Alag
  10. Oonche Log
  11. Aawara Baap
  12. Arjun
  13. Hum Naujawan
  14. Shiva Kea Insaaf

From the above list one can easily understand that he was still there composing good music whereas it is said that he was passing through a lean phase and was overshadowed by other music directors during those years in the 1980s. Well, that is the subject for another post and so I am limiting my write-up for this presentation here only.

This movie also falls under one of my objective of ‘movie having the same title’. So far on the blog we have ‘Sitamgar’ from 1958 already launched earlier. As mentioned in HFGK Vol VI movie with same title was also released in 1934 & 1954, making it four times so where movies with same titles have been released. With today’s song, the film ‘Sitamgar’ of 1985 makes a debut on our blog.

Remembering Pancham Da today and his music let us move to the today’ song now. . .

Song – Hum Kitne Nadaan The Yaaro (Sitamgar) (1985) Singer – Kishore Kumar, Lyrics – Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD – RD Burman

Lyrics

ham kitne naadaan the yaaron
aaj ye samjhe
aaj ye jaana

ham kitne naadaan the yaaron
aaj ye samjhe
aaj ye jaana
sach hai agar to ek mohabbat
jhooth hai baaki saara fasaana
ham kitne naadaan the yaaron
aaj ye samjhe
aaj ye jaana

pad gaye jaise in aankhon pe
zulm ke nafrat ke parde
pad gaye jaise in aankhon pe
zulm ke nafrat ke parde
zindagi tera mujrim hoon main
ho sake to o maaf kar de
andhi raah ke andhe safar mein
beet gaya jeene ka zamaana
ham kitne naadaan the yaaron
aaj ye samjhe
aaj ye jaana

ab ye mohabbat ka
ehsaan hai
ye jo thhodi jaan hai mujhme
ab ye mohabbat ka
ehsaan hai
ye jo thhodi jaan hai mujhme
aap hi main jiska qaatil hoon
zindaa wo insaan hain mujhme
ham kitne naadaan thhe yaaron
aaj ye samjhe
aaj ye jaana
sach hai agar to ek mohabbat
jhooth hai baaki saara fasaana
ham kitne naadaan the yaaron
aaj ye samjhe
aaj ye jaana
