Hullo Atuldom

“Ghar Ka Chiraag” is a title that has been used twice in Bollywood- in 1967 and 1989. The 1967 film had a cast of Dharmendra, Waheeda Rehman, Balraj Sahni, Indrani Mukherjee, Dev Kumar, Biswajeet etc and had music by Madan Mohan for songs written by Kaifi Azmi. This was directed and produced by Jagdev Bhambri.
The 1989 film had Rajesh Khanna leading a cast of Neelam, Chunky Pandey, Om Shivpuri, Shafi Inamdaar, Navin Nischol and Dipika Chikhalia in a special appearance. It had music by Bappi Lahiri and Anjaan was the lyricist. This one was directed by Sikander Bharti and produced by Rajeev Kumar Choudhry.

The content in both the films seem to be different going by the synopsis available on the internet. But I know for a fact that “Ghar Ka Chiraag” (1989) was majorly inspired by the 1969 Balraj Sahni- Sadhana- Sanjay Khan starrer “Ek Phool Do Mail”. This statement of mine is sufficient to give the followers an idea about the movie, correct? Of course, there were minor differences in the story. In “Ek Phool Do Mali” (EPDM) Sadhana becomes an unwed mother because she is molested, whereas “Ghar Ka Chiraag” (GKC) had Neelam getting pregnant with Chunky Pandey’s child. In EPDM Sanjay was a mountaineer and GKC had Chunky as a racing enthusiast. Rest of the story was same in both the movies. And both movies had melodious songs.

GKC had eight songs with two songs having happy and sad versions. “Tutak tutak tutak tutiya” was very popular when the movie had released and I think it was inspired by some Punjabi folk song; this one had two versions. Another song ‘yeh kismat hai kya, jaanta hai wahi’ also had two versions. The happy version is when Kumar (Rajesh Khanna) is celebrating his happiness with wife (Deepika) and friends. We see that this song is echoing the thoughts that Dilip Kumar and Shammi Kapoor had put forth in this song.

In the second version we have Rajesh Khanna singing out his life experiences, and says ‘ek thokar lagi, toota sara nasha’.

Bappi Lahiri used Mohammad Aziz, Amit Kumar and Sapna Mukherjee (youtube is crediting Alka Yagnik for this song, need confirmation) for this song and Alisha Chinai and Amit Kumar for ‘Tutak tutak tutiya’. Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik and Sarika Kapoor (another new name, for me at least) were the other playback singers.
Mohammad Aziz who sang the sad version of today’s song would have celebrated his 67th birthday on July 2nd. He was born in Kolkatta. He sang, primarily, in Hindi, Bengali and Odia films plus some Sufi devotional songs and also various genres in 10 other languages. He was also credited as Munna in some movies. ‘Mard’ by Anu Malik was his breakthrough though the 1984 movie ‘Amber’ with music by Sapan-Jagmohan was his debut in Bollywood. He has sung alongside all the prominent singers of the ’80s and ’90s with music composed by RD Burman, Laxmi-Pyare, Ravindra Jain, Raamlaxman etc; even OP Nayyar and Naushad.

Amit Kumar who has sung the duet with Sapna Mukherjee (or it could be Alka Yagnik, as per the tagging on youtube) celebrates his birthday on July 3rd turns 69!!!!! Is it so!!!!! Unbelieveable!!!! Cannot think of some people as aging, right no 🙂

We have enough fans of Amit Kumar on this blog and everyone knows his history, lineage etc. His last film appearance was in the 1989 release ‘Mamta Ki Chhaon’ which was a movie left incomplete by Kishore Kumar-his father. He had acted in many movies made by his father beginning with “Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein” in 1964. He won the Filmfare award for best singer in 1982 for the 1981 release “Love Story”.

Here is remembering Munna a.k.a Mohammad Aziz on his birth anniversary and Wishing Amit Kumar many more Happy Returns. May he continue to entertain us. He is launching a special RD Burman tribute on his birth-date on his YouTube channel… looking forward to it

Song-Ye kismat hai kya jaante hain wahi zamaane mein hai jinki kismat buri (Ghar Ka Chiraag)(1989) Singers-Alka Yagnik/ Sapna Mukherjee, Amit Kumar, Lyrics-Anjaan, MD-Bappi Lahiri

aadmi kismat se kya
lad paayega bolo yahaan
darr ke kismat se ruka hai
iss zameen pe aasmaan

ye kismat hai kya jaante hain wahi
zamaane mein hai jinki kismat buri
ye kismat hai kya jaante hain wahi
zamaane mein hain jinki kismat buri
hooo ooooo
ooooo
ye kismat hai kya kisne dekha yahaan
ye kismat hai kya kisne dekha yahaan
apni kismat banaata hai khud aadmi

ye kismat hai kya jaante hai wahi
zamaane mein hain jinki kismat buri
ye kismat hai kya kisne dekha yahaan
apni kismat banaata hai khud aadmi

jitne oonche ho insaan ke hausle
utne oonche mahal uske kadmon taley
ho jitne oonche ho insaan ke housle
utne unche mahal uske kadmon taley

jinki mehenat ke dam se mahal hai khade
unko rehne ko milte hai kyon jhonpde
unki mehenat main ye akal shaamil na thhi
apni kismat banaata hai khud aadmi

ye kismat hai kya jaante hain wahi
zamaane mein hai jinki kismat buri

laakh mehnat se seenche koi gulsitaan
baag mein gul khila na sake baaghbaan
laakh mehnat se seenche koi gulsitaan
baag mein gul khila na sake baaghbaan
uski mehenat mein hogi kahi kuchh kami
warna kya hai jo kar na sake aadmi

aadmi khud ko insaan bana na saka
apni kismat banaayega kya aadmi
ye kismat hai kya kisne dekha yahaan
apni kismat banaata hai khud aadmi

hai donon ke dam pe ye duniya khadi
ye kismat hai kya jaante hain khadi
zamaane mein hain jinki kismat buri
ye kismat hai kya kisne dekha yahaan
apni kismat banaata hai khud aadmi

Sad version (Sung by Md Aziz )
——————————————–

har dua ek baddua
kyun ban gayi,
pal mein yahaan
bewafa kismat bhi,
uthth gaya sar se aasmaan

ye kismat hai kya jaanta hai wahi
zamaane mein hai jiski kismat buri
aadmi khud ko insaan bana na saka
apni kismat banayega kya aadmi
ye kismat hai kya jaanta hai wahi
zamaane mein hai jinki kismat buri

ye kismat hai karti ajab faisle
yahaan milke sab kuchh
bhi kuchh na miley
bhatakti hai yoon dar-badar zindagi
ke marke bhi insaan mar na sakey
ye kismat hai kya jaanta hai wahi
zamaane mein hai jiski kismat buri

ek thhokar lagi toota saara nasha
ab hai jaanaa kahaan kuchh nahin hai pata
laake kismat ne chhoda hai kis mod par
jo musaafir thha khud ban gaya raasta
ye kismat hai kya jaanta hai wahi
zamaane mein hai jiski kismat buri
aadmi khud ko insaan bana na saka
apni kismat banayega kya aadmi

Hullo Atuldom

“100 Days” (1991) was produced by Jay Mehta (son of producer Pranlal Mehta), directed by Partho Ghosh. This was a first for both the producer and director. It starred Madhuri Dixit- Moon Moon Sen- Jackie Shroff- Javed Jaffrey- Laxmikant Berde – Sabeeha (daughter of yesteryear actress Ameeta of “Tumsa Nahin Dekha” fame) and a few others. It was a remake of a Tamil hit, a crime thriller with a twist. Madhuri played Moon Moon’s sister and Javed Jaffrey’s college friend. Jackie played a rich man and Laxmikant Berde his secretary.

Usually I like to give the synopsis of the movie with the song but not today. It will take away the fun of seeing the movie, just in case any follower of the blog feels like having a dekho of the movie, anytime. I have seen it in both languages and have loved it. Specially the climax and the various emotions that run through the movie. There is high drama, comedy, romance and a few entertaining songs. Partho Ghosh had an able cinematographer in the (late) Arvind Laad and the frames in the suspense scenes are well composed.

The music for the movie was by Vijay Patil better known as Raam Laxman. I remember that our in-house encyclopedia has mentioned somewhere on the blog that Raam -Laxman were brothers who were signed up for the 1977 movie ‘Agent Vinod’. Unfortunately, Raam the older brother passed away before the release of ‘Agent Vinod’ in 1976. But Vijay Patil continued his journey in the industry as Raam -Laxman and was very successful in the ’90s. He later changed his name to Raamlaxman post ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’.

“100 Days” had songs written by Dilip K Tahir, Dev Kohli and Ravinder Rawal. the singers used were Lata Mangeshkar, Alka Yagnik, S.P. Balasubramaniam, and Amit Kumar. Choreographers were Suresh Bhatt, Chinni Prakash, and Partho Ghosh himself. There are two songs that were filmed on the dancing duo Javed Jaffery and Madhuri of which one was a stage song.

Today we are not having the stage song but the other one, which is essentially keeping with the spirit of today i.e. April Fool’s day or All Fools day. Since morning there have been messages which are supposedly giving insight into why this day is celebrated and the last line of that message says, and I quote: “He used to read all fake stories, like you are doing now. It’s great idea fooling you”. Normally people play harmless pranks on their friends and dear ones on this day and I read somewhere that this is, generally, only till noon.

This is what I found on wikipedia:- “Some writers suggest that April Fools’ originated because in the Middle Ages, New Year’s Day was celebrated on March 25 in most European towns, with a holiday that in some areas of France, specifically, ended on April 1, and those who celebrated New Year’s Eve on January 1 made fun of those who celebrated on other dates by the invention of April Fools’ Day. The use of January 1 as New Year’s Day became common in France only in the mid-16th century, and that date was not adopted officially until 1564, by the Edict of Roussillon”.

Before getting on to the song I would like to congratulate Atulji, Sudhirji and all his followers and contributors and commentors on the blog’s 16300th post. Even if the blog is moving as per the movement of the moon, we are reaching centuries at a constant pace.

Here is the song in Alka Yagnik and Amit Kumar’s voices Sabeeha is in Javed’s team in playing pranks on Madhuri though they are all close friends. This song is written by Ravinder Rawal.

I would like to point out a few things in this song:-
(1) Javed jaffery is holding a small potli in his hand at the start of the song, akin to what Gabbar Singh had in ‘Sholay’.
(2) Madhuri has a step where she is shown mixing tambaaku (tobacco) like Gabbar Singh (of course).
These are the reasons why the song has stayed with me in all these years.

umar mein jo tha bilkul kachcha
paas mein aake ye bola usko

ye kah kal gaya
jo dal gaya woh mal gaya

haan gabbar singh yeh kah kar gaya
jo darr gaya woh mar gaya
haaye gabbar singh yeh kah kar gaya
jo darr gaya woh mar gaya

nadaan bachcha hansi khel mein
kaudi ghazab ki dekar gaya
arre naadaan bachcha hansi khel mein
kaudi ghazab ki dekar gaya

haaye re
gabbar singh yeh kah kar gaya
jo darr gaya woh mar gaya
haaye gabbar singh yeh kah kar gaya
jo darr gaya woh mar gaya

la la la la laa laa laa
la la la la laa laa laa la

dilwaalon ki hai yeh adaa
dilwaalon ki hai yeh adaa
jeene ka lete hain mazaa
jeene ka lete hain mazaa
arre un baaton se kya darna
jin par zor nahin apna
haaye haaye haaye
ga ga ga ga gabbar singh yeh kah kar gaya
jo darr gaya woh mar gaya
haaye gabbar singh yeh kah kar gaya
jo darr gaya woh mar gaya

kya hua
ha ha ha ha ha

nakli khaal pehan kar aaye
geedad sher agar ban jaaye
pal bhar dhaak jama leta hai woh

aisa
haan
par logon ke pathar khaake
bhaage jab woh dum dabake
koi bachche kahe agar usko

kya
gabbal ching ye kah kal gaya
jo dal gaya woh mal gaya
haaye gabbar singh yeh kah kar gaya
jo darr gaya woh mar gaya

arre gabbar singh yeh kah kar gaya
jo darr gaya woh mar gaya

kehte hain geedad ki aaye jo maut
toh bhaag kar woh shehar gaya

kehte hain geedad ki aaye jo maut
toh bhaag kar woh shehar gaya

gabbal ching kya kah kal gaya
jo dal gaya wo mal gaya

Hullo Atuldom

The song with this post is a Peevesie discovery. I don’t remember when exactly, but definitely a few years back she mentioned about this song to me. And it looks like she has seen and enjoyed the video too and it has stayed in her memory. She remembered exactly how the song starts. And the dance steps of Govinda and Madhuri. Awesome combination. Just like in the previous Madhuri Dixit song where with Prabhu Deva as her co-dancer, here too, she is excellent. She is in a different orbit when she has a dancer for a co-actor. In “Que sarasara” she matched Prabhu Deva step for step, here it is a typically Govinda dance that is a treat.

So what, if the lyrics are non-sensical. The song is set as a fun-song, going by the video I have a feeling that Madhuri has accidentally eaten or drunk something intoxicating and Govinda is trying his best to control her in the given circumstances.

A few days back I had sent a song from ‘Disco Dancer’ to Atulji and then I had made up my mind to follow it with another Mithun song which features a ‘mithai‘. There were other songs from the 70s which were running through my mind for this particular post which is for a very special occasion. Songs which showed the male running the household while the female is away at work. But on reviewing those songs I felt that the song which Peevesie suggested is better. Why? Well for one today is a party occasion and “mithai toh banti hai” – it is our Ranchiwaale Gaanewala’s birthday (now its about time to give him a new name, he is no longer in Ranchi 🙂 ). It has a lot of activity in it and our sutradhaar is a hyperactive person. I don’t need to give any proof to show his level of activeness, his commitment to his pets, work and the blog is proof enough. There have been days when I have found him online early in the morning with a post at 5:45 a.m. and a few times his last post has been at 12 in the night. Hats off to his dedication. Approximately 10804 posts (on the day this is being written) and still having a lot of ideas to connect with songs and give us new post daily – AMAZING. Thank you Atulji for giving us this group and site to turn to.

Before I sat to write all this, I read through what I had written last year and I feel the same even now- May God give Atulji health, peace of mind, lots of time and good infrastructural support in the form of unending internet and electrical connections. And we will not mind him being absent from the blog when his family is around as they are more entitled to his time. (Hope he enjoyed his first vacation, this year, after he started the blog) And hope he doesn’t mind us pestering him with our farmaishes. Here is hoping he gives us many opportunities to celebrate and we will keep presenting him with lovely songs.

Coming to today’s song it is from the 1990 release “Izzatdaar” which starred the stalwart Dilip Kumar in the lead with the south Indian actor Raghuvaran as villain. Another southern star- Swapna- played Dilip Kumar’s daughter, Madhuri played his grand daughter and Govinda plays a man who works for the underworld (I think) but gets reformed on falling in love. (the powers of the feeling of love 🙂 ). It was a revenge story with Dilip Kumar avenging his daughter’s death etc. with lot of Bollywood masala. It was directed by K Bapaiah, Anand Bakshi wrote songs which were composed by Laxmikant Pyaarelal. Amit Kumar and Alka Yagnik are the playback.

Wish you a very happy birthday Atulji
