While discussing the films, ‘Gharaonda’ (1977) and ‘Dooriyaan’ (1979), the name of Bhimsain gets noticed. Both these films were produced and directed by him whose specialisation was in animation films. His foray into feature film was a journey into uncharted waters for him. In the event, both these films became cult-classics. Thereafter, he made only one Hindi film, ‘Tum Laut Aao’ (1983) and bid goodbye to Hindi films. He devoted rest of his life in improving the standard of animation films in India. I have come across about a dozen of videos on the development of animation films in India and all of these mention about the contributions Ram Mohan and Bhimsain in the field of animation films in India.

Remembering Bhimsain Khurana (24/11/1936 – 17/04/2018), a devoted animation filmmaker whose 87th birth anniversary falls today.

Bhimsain Khurana was born in Multan (now in Pakistan). His father, Himmatrai Khurana was an artist making frames for paintings. After partition, his family moved to India and settled in Lucknow. Bhimsain studied Hindustani classical music and fine arts during which he studied the basic of animation. After obtaining the diploma in Classical Music and Fine Arts from Lucknow University in 1961, he joined Film Division’s Cartoon Film Unit as a Background Artist in Mumbai. Here, he came into contact with Ram Mohan who is regarded as the father of animation films in India. He learnt nuances of the animation film making from him during his 10 years of contact with him, first in Films Division and later in Prasad Productions, Chennai.

In 1971, Bhimsain became an independent filmmaker. He produced and directed his first animation short film, ‘The Climb’ (1971). The film won him the Silver Hugo Award at the Chicago Films Festival. The international recognition of his first film made him to name his film production company as ‘Climb Films’. He made several animation films such as ‘Kahaani Har Zamaane Ki’ (1971) based on stories from Panchatantraas, ‘Mehmaan’ (1972) with family planning theme, ‘Ek Anek Aur Ekta’ (1974) based on the theme of unity in diversity. This film won him the National Film Award for the Best Educational Film. Interestingly, the theme song in this film was rendered by 5-year-old, Sadhana Ghanekar under the music direction of Vasant Desai. The singer is none other than a well-known playback singer, Sadhana Sargam.

Bhimsain’s foray into Hindi feature film started in 1976 when he produced and directed ‘Gharaonda’ (1977) based on a play written by Dr Shankar Shesh. It was a low budget film with upcoming actors, Amol Palekar and Zarina Wahab in the lead roles. He completed the shooting of the film in less than one month with a total cost of about Rs 8 lakhs from his own savings. However, the film remained unreleased for nearly one year as no film distributor was prepared to release the film due to its unconventional ending. Finally, Bhimsain released the film with his own money. His next film, ‘Dooriyaan’ (1979), again based on a short story by Dr Shankar Shesh, was on the subject of marital discord of a working couple. It appears that Bhimsain may not have cherished his stint as Hindi feature filmmaker as after producing and directing his next film, ‘Tum Laut Aao’ (1983), he completely alienated from feature films. He reverted to his favourite, animation films making beside a few TV serials.

After making some more animation films, such as ‘Der Aaye Durust Aaye’ (1981), ‘Jeewan Rahasya’ (1982), ‘Shaadi Shaadi’ (1982) etc, Bhimsain made his first TV serial, ‘Chhoti Badi Baaten’ (1986), based on superstitions which was broadcast from Doordarshan. Simultaneously, he continued to make animation films in the 1980s for which he won critical acclaim and awards. In 1992, he made India’s first computer-generated animation series, ‘Lok Gaatha’ (1992) based on folk tales which won him three National Film Awards. In 1994, Doordarshan entrusted him to make a 26-episode TV serial, ‘Varthmaan’ (1994) in 2D animation which was well received.

Around mid-1990s, the National Film Board of Canada invited Bhimsain as a jury panelist. They also entrusted him with making two short, animation films, ‘Locked’ (1996) on child labour and ‘Trade Commerce’ (1997) on girl child trafficking.

During his lifetime, Bhimsain made 28 animation films, about 200 of advertising films and 3 Hindi feature films. He won 14 National Film Awards and 3 International Film Awards. At the Animation Masters Summit, 2017, Bhimsain Khurana was honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Animation film industry in India.

Bhimsain also indulged in song writing, music composition and in singing though he did not pursue them professionally. He has recorded a bhajan album of about a dozen songs which was written, composed and rendered by him. He has also published his selected poems, ‘Main Shaayar To Nahin’ under the name, Bhimsain Lucknawi and other books. His last published book was ‘Incomplete Story of Animation’ (2015) which was released by Governor of Maharashtra.

Bhimsain was honoured on with a retrospective of his animation films at the 15th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF), held in January 2018 at the Films Division complex in Mumbai. It was like homecoming for him as in 1961, he had started his career in animation film in Film Division. In less than 3 months of receiving the honour, Bhimsain passed away on April 17, 2018, due to old-age related illness.

If Ram Mohan was the father of the animation film movements in India, Bhimsain Khurana was the catalyst of that movement.

Bhimsain’s younger son, Keerit Khurana who is a Foreign-trained animation filmmaker has taken charge of his father’s film production company, ‘Climb Media’ producing and directing short animation, documentaries and advertisement films. His Hindi feature film, ‘Toonpur Ka Superhero’ (2010) was a costume drama written by Bhimsain with Ajay Devgan and Kajol in lead roles. It is probably the first Hindi film with a mixed cast of live actors and the animated characters.

‘Tum Laut Aao’ (1983) was the last Hindi feature film produced and directed by Bhimsain Khurana. As usual, it was a low budget film with the lesser- known actors which included debutants, Nishant Suri and Kavita Chaudhary in the lead roles with Karan Razdan, Ravi Baswani, Sushmita Mukherjee, Mayur Verma, Ratna Bhushan, Savita Bajaj etc. The film is about the obsession of a man to settle abroad to improve his standard of living as his younger brother had reportedly done so. While abroad, his own brother has lost not only his self-respect but also the values inculcated in India. Mahendra realises that things are not as rosy for working abroad as presented by his brother.

The film is available on one of the video sharing platforms but it’s conversion from VHS tapes to VCD is so bad that most of the film’s frames are unsteady and actors are unrecognisable. In some places, the sound is not audible. With these limitations, I have randomly watched the film, based on which I have attempted the gist of the film’s story as under:

Mahendra (Nishant Suri) has completed engineering degree but he is yet to get a proper employement as per his qualification. Frustrated with his career not taking shape as per his liking, he now dreams of going to the USA to improve his standard of living. In his dream, the idol is his younger brother, Vinod (Karan Razdan) who has already been working in the USA and he has been feeding Mahendra about his good life there. Propelled by Vinod, Mahendra decides to leave India for the USA. However, neither his father nor his aunt (Ratna Bhushan) is in favour. Vinod helps Mahendra in getting visa.

Mita (Kavita Chaudhary), his fiancée has no issue with his going abroad for better prospects. However, she insists on an early marriage with him before he goes abroad. The marriage takes place but before Mahendra goes abroad, Mita is pregnant. He suggests her for abortion which she refuses. In the meanwhile, Vinod returns to India. Within few days of his return, his changed attitudes and insensitivity create problems for the entire family in adjusting with him. Mita is in advanced stage of her pregnancy and during delivery, she dies leaving a son to be taken care off by Mahendra.

While returning from the funeral of Mita, Vinod advises Mahendra to take a practical and dispassionate view by delinking his past and move on in his life with a new environment and a relationship in the USA. Mahendra does not like his insensitive advice and hence he does not respond. The next morning, Mahendra resolves to take care of his new-born son and chalk out his future career in India rather than going to the USA.

‘Tum Laut Aao’ (1983) had 5 songs written by Sudarshan Faakir which were set to music by Jagjit Singh-Chitra Singh. I am presenting the first song from the film, ‘tere sapne mere sapne’ which is rendered by Chitra Singh and Suresh Wadkar. The song is picturised on Nishant Suri and Kavita Chaudhary which appears almost at the start of the film, which gives an indication of their commitment to each other in their evovling relationship.

Notes:

(1) Information on Bhimsain Khurana is mainly culled out from an article in ‘Front Line’, May 23, 2018, his interviews with Vividh Bharati, the website, https://bhimsain.com/. I have also collated the supporting information from various other online sources.
(2) Sometime back, Prakashchandra ji had requested me to write an article on Bhimsain Khurana. I have timed it to appear on the Blog on the occasion of Bhimsain Khurana’s 87th birth anniversary.
