With the 300th post behind me, I can really get on with my regular song posts. I missed a few anniversary posts in November and December, but a few are coming up in the remaining days of December.
How does one start a birthday post for controversy’s favourite child? I have a little doubt whether he is controversy’s favourite child or controversy is his favourite child.
To be truthful, I stumbled upon this RFAK song link shared by someone on facebook. The songs of this movie and the movie itself has been kept fresh, not by frequent viewing on TV, but the songs which keep coming back to mind, with each subsequent song in the inevitable ‘eid release’ Salman Khan movies every passing year. I was an infrequent visitor to the theatre still in 2010. After ‘Dabangg’ came ‘Dabangg 2’ and ‘Dabangg 3’, to make the list of successful sequels.
I have discovered that Salman Khan’s full name is Abdul Rashid Salim Salman Khan. He is born on 27th December 1965, so he is turning 55 in 2020. That makes him 45 in 2010, when this movie ‘Dabangg’ released, which figures. A lot is there on the net and media about Salman Khan’s personal life and conduct, which has made him the favourite child of controversy. The media makes or breaks these people superstars or non-stars, so it is a two-sided coin. This show-biz is more murky waters now than it was, say, 50 years ago.
60 or 70 years ago, only the extremely poor were making their daughters join the film industry, as it was not known as a good profession. Very few girls from well to do families, or from the really noble families were working in the film industry. Even the filmy families who made it big would not allow their daughters or daughter-in-laws to work in films. Kapoor family is a case in point. Babita went against the family traditions and launched Karishma in films. But in recent decades things have changed a lot. It is no longer a case of question of survival for most of the stars or actors working in films and show business today. They are ready to go to whatever length they are required to earn name and fame and the resultant moolah. It is better not to judge anyone for their deeds and misdeeds. They need the media and the media needs them, so the circus goes on.
I would rather mention the positives, like Salman Khan’s charity work. Or the good unpretentious work he does to give back to the society. He does his bit, with or without media attention. There is a very good reason for his title as ‘bhai’. It is not just Salim Khan’s good offices that have taken him out of a few soups, that’s what I have heard.
Coming back to the song from ‘Dabangg’, it is two version song, one is a solo with chorus by Rahat Fateh Ali khan, second is a duet version by RFAK and Shreya Ghoshal.
Faaiz Anwar is the lyricist and composers are Sajid -Wajid. The duo Sajid-Wajid are borthers and sons of Sharafat Ali khan, a table player. Wajid was younger of the two and he expired on June 1, 2020, after he had a major operation for Kidney transplant in March 2020.
The song I am presenting is one of the best songs of year 2010. There was no Binaca geet mala then as there is no such thing now, but this song would have featured on such a programme. This song is unique that the mukhda is being sung by two different types of male choruses and I detect RFAK’s voice in both choruses, one a normal mode of singing and second in classical qawwali style. RFAK has vast invaluable experience of live singing with his uncle Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, as a chorus companion and singing alaaps during his long qawwali renditions. The experience shows in qawwali-cum-sugam sangeet songs like these, where the pitch is different for the solo version and the duet version.
I rather think these songs sung by RFAK were not actually composed by the music directors assigned. Most likely they were just credited to the music director of the film but were actually composed by RFAK himself, be it Himesh Reshammiya, Sajid-Wajid, Vishal-Shekhar or Vishal Bharadwaj. The quota was usually one song per film only.
The duet version song is picturized on Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha(daughter of Shatrughan Sinha). Both look good in their role play, as a police inspector and a poor pottery maker. The movie is making its debut in the blog, with this earthy and natural sounding song.

Hullo Atuldom
Thank you Nahmji for reminding me of this song. How? Well in your previous post on Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan you mentioned his nephew. And immediately I thought of today’s song which is written by the poet, lyricist, author screenwriter and director who turns a year younger today.
This man has worked with all the legends of the Hindi film industry beginning (as lyricist) with Sachin Dev Burman in 1963 in a movie directed by Bimal Roy. His last released movie is “The Sky is Pink” which released in September 2019 and was directed by Shonali Bose (a new director who has been making films since 2005) and had music by Pritam Chakravarty. In the interim (1963 to 2019) he has written songs for movies directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Asit Sen etc of the earlier brigade and Shaad Ali, Mani Ratnam, Danny Boyle etc from the newer set of directors. He has of course written songs in the movies he himself directed, the last of which came in 1999 – Hu Tu Tu. This Sahitya Akademi, Dadasaheb Phalke, Padma Bhushan award winner has won several National Film awards, 21 Filmfare awards and also an Academy Award (popular as Oscars) plus a Grammy. Such a talent that even International juries cannot ignore right?
So it must already be clear that I am here wishing Shri. Sampooran Singh Kalra professionally called Gulzar on his 86th birthday. There is enough material in various posts about this man’s biography so let us go directly to the song which has a play of words that is typical of Gulzar saab.
In this song he has used words like “Piri” which I am sure that common people like me don’t know the meaning of. I would love it if someone can give synonyms.
This song is from “Ishqiya” which released in 2010. (10 years back). It was directed by Abhishek Chaubey, produced by Raman Maroo and Vishal Bharadwaj and has music by Vishal Bharadwaj. It had a highly talented star cast headed by stalwart Naseeruddin Shah, Vidya Balan, Arshad Warsi and a whole lot of talent in supporting cast too. It was written by Gulzar too. The story was placed in Gorakhpur. It had to do with the escapades of two criminals who botch up a job and run away to take refuge in the home of one Vidyadhar Verma (Adil Hussain- remember seeing him as Sridevi’s husband in “English Vinglish”) and end up meeting Verma’s wife Krishna (Vidya Balan) who gives them shelter to achieve her own secret goal.
Baaki ki kahaani parde pe (see the movie to enjoy this ‘black comedy’). After all if this 86 year old can say “dil toh bachcha hai ji” even we, his fans, should have bachhpana in our “dil”
The song is sung by Raahat Fateh Ali Khan.
Happy Birthday once again Kalraji a.k.a Gulzar saab.

Lyrics
aisi uljhi nazar unse hat’ti nahin
daant se reshmi dor kat’ti nahin
umr kabki baras ke sufed ho gayi
kaari badri jawaani ki chhat’ti nahin
wallah yeh dhadkan
badhne lagi hai
chehre ki rangat
udne lagi hai
darr lagta hai tanha sone mein jee
dil toh bachcha hai jee
dil toh bachcha hai jee
thoda kachcha hai jee
aaaaa
dil toh bachcha hai jee
aisi uljhi nazar unse hat’ti nahin
daantse reshmi dor kat’ti nahin
umr kab ki baras ke sufed ho gayi
kaari badri jawaani ki chhant’ti nahin
raaa ra aaa aaa aa

raaa ra aaa aaa aa

raaa ra aaa aaa aa
raaa ra aaa aaa aa
raaa ra aaa aaa aa
raaa
kisko pata thha pehlu mein rakkha
dil aisa paaji bhi hoga
hum toh hamesha samajhte thhe koi
hum jaisa haaji hi hoga
haaye zor karein kitna shor karein
bewajah baaton pe ainvayi gaur karen
dil sa koi kameena aa nahin
koi toh roke
koi toh toke
iss umr mein ab khaaoge dhokhe
darr lagta hai ishq karne mein jee
dil toh bachcha hai jee,
dil toh bachcha hai jee
thhoda kachcha hai jee,
aaaa
dil toh bachcha hai jee
aisi udaasi baithhi hai dil pe
hansne se ghabra rahe hai
saari jawaani katra ke kaati
piri mein takra gaye hai
dil dhadkta hai toh
aise lagta hai woh
aa raha hai yahin dekhta hi raho
prem ki maare kataar re ae
tauba yeh lamhe
kat’te nahin kyun
aankhon se meri
hat’te nahin kyun
darr lagta hai khud se kehne mein bhi
dil toh bachcha hai jee,
dil toh bachcha hai jee
thhoda kachcha hai jee,
aaaaa

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 4
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
This song has been suggested by Peevesie’w Mom ji, for inclusion in this series. Interestingly enough, the original song from the ‘Disco Dancer’ was posted on our blog by herself only, on June 16th, last year. Last year she has posted this on the birth anniversary of the prime protagonist of this song – Mithun Chakravarty.
So when I initiated this series, she almost immediately connected with me, and sent me the link to this repeat song, with the request that I post it on the 16th June. But my bad – even though I did start preparing this post well in time, 16th June was not to be, due to other compelling priorities etc. So today, fourteen days later, we are sending in this very belated birthday greeting to this original Disco Dancer.
The original song appears on our blog here >> “I Am A Disco Dancer”. It is from the 1982 film ‘Disco Dancer’ with music by Bappi Lahiri, and singing voice is of Vijay Benedict. In this later version from the 2010 film ‘Golmaal 3’, the song has been re recorded in the voice of Bappi Lahiri himself. This version is shorter than the original by one stanza.
The interesting peculiarity, rather a unique feature about this repeat song is that on screen it is performed by the same artist, after a gap of 28 years. And so, it is an interesting comparison to view both these songs side by side. When he performed this song in 1982, he was all of 30 years of age. And the repeat – well in 2010, Mithun was 58 years old. The energy and the intensity of his dance movements of course has dimmed down quite a bit. In this latter version we are bringing on today, most of his movements are single move shots, standing at one place, very unlike the vigorous moves he makes as he bounces across the stage, 28 years earlier. But surely, kudos to him for still taking on this challenge, and making quite a good show of it. It is in his eyes – the intensity in his eyes is still the same.
As I am writing about this unique repeat song, I am also reminded of another similar repeat, that is actually a hallmark in the history of Hindi film music. Yes, I am reminding readers of the very first song in Hindi films – “De De Khuda Ke Naam Pe Pyaare”. That song, and its singer, has made an even more significantly unique record in the annals of Hindi film songs. Wazir Mohammed Khan, who has sung, as well as performed on screen, this momentous song in ‘Alam Aara’ in 1931 – he was destined to repeat it twice, as both the singer and the on screen performer. The film ‘Alam Aara’ was remade twice, in 1956 and then again in 1973. With the first rendition being in 1931, after 25 years, it gets reprised in 1956, and then again after another 17 years in 1973 – the second repeat coming 42 years after the original performance.
WM Khan was born in 1906 – that makes him just 25 years of age when he appeared in the original ‘Alam Aara’ of 1931. With a white turban and a flowing grey beard, this young man of 25 years played the role of a 70+ years old mendicant. In 1956, he was fifty when he reprised this role the first time. And then, in 1973, he was 67 years of age, when he played the fakeer yet one more time, singing the same song. Of course, the third time he did not need a make-up artifact – the white beard we see is his own. The very first song in Hindi films – repeated twice over, and by the same singer-performer, over a period of 42 years. This accomplishment in the annals of Hindi films is likely to go down in history – unmatched and unchallenged.
On another note, since I initiated this series, I have been getting some very seriously interesting suggestions from various readers of our blog, and other friends in my circle. Some very interesting songs are coming up as repeats in the next episodes of this series.
Regarding the film ‘Golmaal 3’, I am not getting into details. The Wiki page of this film carries a lot of good information. One interesting connect I made about this film. Although this song is credited to Bappi Lahiri, being the music director of the original, the MD of ‘Golmaal 3’ is Pritam. Full name of this gentleman is Pritam Chakravarty. So we have the MD and the lead player in the film – both Chakravarty. To top it, the name of the character role played by Mithun in the film – it is Pritam. 😀 😀
OK, so the 4th episode done, with a promise of a few very interesting ones to come up. Watch this space – 🙂 .

This song I am posting is from the 2010 movie ‘Aisha’ starring Sonam Kapoor & Abhay Deol. There are other actors but the movie focuses on these two central characters. It is about characters who do sometimes act out of character. Aisha is a social butterfly, who dabbles into all i.e. baking, yoga, gardening, drawing, shopping, event management and match making. In between all this she also finds time to jog in the morning and spends time at animal shelter. Watching polo match is a foregone conclusion considering her upper class background. Her charmed circle goes for picnics, stays in tents next to the river and goes river rafting to end the evening singing by the bonfire. She even goes pubbing and parties at farm houses in true Delhi style, in between bitching about a New York returned female colleague of Abhay Deol, who is a corporate slave according to Aisha. Who wouldn’t want to do all of the above, if one was so inclined within one hour 🙂 .
Sonam Kapoor aka Aisha even goes shopping and transforms a small town girl, Shefali into a clone of herself. So far as that Abhay Deol, tells her to rename the girl, Maisha or Naisha to rhyme with Aisha. The film has more crazy antics that Aisha ends up doing. She has access to a tree house too, to sit in the balcony, and make up with the best friend she messed up with. Wow, how the truly rich people live. Who wouldn’t want a tree house, who wouldn’t want a real live tree in the house, for that matter. We all have houses with lots of trees in native places, but cannot stay there. We want such luxuries here, where we are. This would be true at least for some of the regulars here, especially those in the metros.
Actually, the film starts and ends with a wedding. Talking of weddings and looking for a wedding song is what brought me back to this movie, after seeing a whole gamut of Hindi film songs which are about weddings. My first choice was “Mud Ke Na Dekho Dilbaro” from ‘Raazi’ (2018) which is already posted. Couple of songs I would have liked to post were also posted like ‘Maaye Ni Maaye” from ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun’ (1994) posted Peevesie’s Mom. “Mud Ke Na Dekho Dilbaro” is such a soulful song that I kept playing it in the office after it was posted back in October 2018. My daughter’s wedding date was fixed for December 2018 and some colleagues / friends who knew it, were quick to point out the aptness of song for the upcoming wedding.
It was Peevesie’s Mom’s post of “Navraai Maajhi Ladaachi Ladaachi Ga” from ‘English Vinglish’ (2012) that gave me the idea of sharing all the good news on my family front. So let me take this opportunity and congratulate Peevesie’s Mom and family for the important milestone and wish the couple a very long and happy married life.
Almost exactly a month before this happy occasion was the day of our family celebration with our daughters ‘nikaah’ solemnised. It was our very first experience of personally being responsible for the organisation of an event on this scale. It is said that man proposes and God disposes. I have learnt in this event that things have their own way of slipping out of hands and God sends help in the shape of these good souls as ‘Rehmat ke Farishte‘ to save the day.
It was an exciting and hectic period for all of us.
Anyway, as my cousin who is also now daughter’s sister in law too said all that really matters is that the two people getting married are happy together, everything else is secondary.
Coming back to the wedding celebrations, it was my younger sister and brother in law, who did a lot of hard work getting this show on the road. My daughter being the only girl child among us three sisters, my brother and sister and brother in law really wanted to make an event of it. They rallied the kids and some adults in the family including my son to make short and cute singing, dancing cameo performances for the Mahendi function.
Alhamdullillah, the year 2018 has been an eventful and fortunate year for us, with my son’s success in NEET’2018 and being admitted in college of his choice in Mumbai and we cannot thank the Almighty Allah(swt) for all the blessings that he has bestowed upon us all.
How time has flown. When I started contributing in the blog my daughter was still in school and my son was a mischievous hyper-active boy who needed all round supervision and attention. Now it seems my husband and me both are almost daily try to remind him that he has parents too and he should at least try put in a WhatsApp message in the family group. Frequently, his phone battery is discharged, or he loses the charger or sitting in the library where his phone has no range.
As the blog moves towards 15000 song post mark, I am trying to send a fair number of song posts. Hopefully, my posts won’t need too much of proof reading.
This song from ‘Aisha’ has a mukhda fully in Punjabi, which was a bit tricky in getting the lyrics right. Rather think that I have done a good job of correcting the lyrics which ‘Google’ came up with. Javed Akhtar’s lyrics and Amit Trivedi’s music and Tochi Raina’s singing make this a good, if peppy number. I think this Tochi Raina, making his debut in the blog is the same as Toshi Rana, a winner on ‘Indian Idol” years ago, back during my TV watching days.

What makes a song beautiful? Is it its lyrics, its music, the instrumentation or the vocal quality? The best songs have all four in common, but some songs that we like can be for even one of the above reasons. A lot of people like to proclaim that the current set of songs do not have the same quality as older songs. I do not even know when the time period for new songs does begin and which songs get classified as old.
