Blog ten year challenge (2010-2020)- Song Number 85
————————————————–

Atul ji has rightly mentioned in his post regarding BTYC posts coming up regularly, having taken precedence over other projects in the process. I think, on the other hand it is also helping bring movies bring closer to ‘Yippeeee’ and also helping movies getting noticed after an interval of couple or few years where the movies earlier were having some songs posted and took a back-seat thereafter without any reason.

In some cases where many movies made their debut ten years ago and were forgotten thereafter after getting only one song posted, the ‘Blog Ten Year Challenge’ has been like a ‘boon’ for them. In turn it also gives a chance to readers to visit the songs of movie like these and recall their songs which were played then and also recall some fond memories if any.

Consider the case of one of the two movies due for ‘BTYC’ today – ‘Mahaan-1983’ which made its debut on the blog ten years back and so far, has only one song posted on the blog.

Let us have a look on the six songs posted on the blog ten years back on this day on
22.09.2010;

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Raaton ki neend chheen lee aankhon ke intezaar ne Shokhiyaan-1951 All Songs covered
Teri kaafir nigaah kar gayi dil ko tabaah Miss Coca Cola-1955 All Songs covered
Yaad karoon tori batiyaan Mr Lambu-1956 All Songs covered
Tum aur ham bhool ke gham Fashion-1957 06 songs posted
Mujhe gale se lagaa lo bahut udaas hoon main Aaj Aur Kal-1963 All Songs covered
Jidhar dekhoon teri tasweer nazar aati hai Mahaan-1983 01 song posted

‘Mahaan-1983’ had some good songs like the one ‘Jidhar dekhoon teri tasweer nazar aati hai’ already posted on the blog and ‘pyaar mein dil pe maar de goli’ being the most popular song from the movie. ‘Ye din to aata hai ek din jawaani mein’ sung by Pancham and Asha Bhonsle was the other song frequently played and like then.

Music for ‘Mahaan-1983’ was composed by R.D. Burman.

I had not watched this movie then and have not watched it so far, so can’t say much about the movie.

When I noticed that this movie was due for BTYC today I went through its songs and I have selected one other song (which required more time from me to complete the ‘baat’:) ), but then noticed this lesser heard (I don’t remember to have heard this song earlier) song sung by Kishore Kumar and have selected this song for today’s presentation.

The song is lip-synced on screen by Amitabh Bachchan and also seen in picturization of the song is Zeenat Aman and also seen is a Puppet (of Ramdas Padhye the famous ventriloquist, I guess I am correct) with them.

‘Mahaan-1983’ had total seven songs in it all written by Anjaan and composed by R.D. Burman.

So far, only one song from ‘Mahaan-1983’ have been posted on the blog;

Song Posted On
Jidhar dekhoon teri tasweer nazar aati hai 22.09.2010

I am not giving details about the movie and other songs too, and holding them for a detailed post with other song of the movie to be presented in the future on the blog.

(Unlike the song which finishes ‘aadhi baat’ I am not completing my ‘baat’ here)

Let us now enjoy today’s song from this movie. 🙂

(Lyrics noted are as per audio link which has three stanzas whereas the video link doesn’t have the second stanza as given in the audio link.)

Blog ten year challenge (2010-2020)- Song Number 84
————————————————–

This day ten years ago (viz 22 september 2020) was another normal day for the blog, when six songs from six different movies were discussed. First post of the day appeared at 7:29 AM and the final post at 9:12 AM.

Here are the details:-

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Raaton ki neend chheen lee aankhon ke intezaar ne Shokhiyaan-1951 All Songs covered
Teri kaafir nigaah kar gayi dil ko tabaah Miss Coca Cola-1955 All Songs covered
Yaad karoon tori batiyaan Mr Lambu-1956 All Songs covered
Tum aur ham bhool ke gham Fashion-1957 06 songs posted
Mujhe gale se lagaa lo bahut udaas hoon main Aaj Aur Kal-1963 All Songs covered
Jidhar dekhoon teri tasweer nazar aati hai Mahaan-1983 01 song posted

One can see from the above that four out of six movies whose songs were covered ten years ago have been YIPPEED by now,

“Fashion”(1957) was one of the two as yet unYIPPEED movies.

“Fashion”(1957) was directed by Lekhraj Bhakri for Kuldip Pictures production, Bombay. The movie had Pradeep Kumar, Mala Sinha, Chandrashekhar, Manoj Kumar, Jabeen Jaleel,Sunder, Jabeen Jalil, Jagdish Sethi, Kammo, Leela Misra etc in it.

The movie had eight songs in it. six songs have been covered in the past. Here are the details :-

Song Posted On
Bahaaron se poochho ・laakh sambhaala magar kho gaya 23.09.2009
Tum aur ham bhool ke gham 22.09.2010
Madbhari hain pyaar ki palkein 05.08.2012
Dharti ki goad mein aasmaan ke chhaaon mein 19.07.2016
Honthon pe tera naam 17.10.2016
Maati ko lajaanaa naa 16.07.2019

It turns out that the last two songs of the movie were multiple version songs. The first part was a multilingual song sung by Sulochana Kadam and Mubarak Begam. The second part in Hindi was sung by Asha Bhonsle. Bharat Vyas was the lyricist. Music was composed by Hemant Kumar.

Part I is listed in HFGK as “Bindu baashi daao more haath, aaj nishi bazaari” which are in Bangla. This song is available as Bharat Ke Lok Geet. This fact is also mentioned in HFGK Part III footnote at page no.349 movie no.697.

On listening to the song, the Bangla portion is not to be found. Marathi, Gujarati, Marwadi and Punjabi portions can be heard. So it appears that the Bangla portion has got omitted for some reason.

Lyrics of this song and other BTYC details were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

Lyrics of the first part (the multilingual one) as noted leaves a lot to be desired mainly because of lack of familiarity with the languages. I request our knowledgeable readers familiar with these languages to help fill in and suggest additions/ corrections in the lyrics.

With these songs, all the eight songs of “Fashion”(1957) get covered and the movie joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog.

Moreover, Hemant Kumar now has 300 songs in the blog as a music director.

Blog ten year challenge (2010-2020)- Song Number 81
————————————————–

OK, so finally ‘Anmol Ghadi’ got yippeee’d this week, on the very first day of the week. And Atul ji, still waiting for you to clear the mystery behind this yippeee.

Once again, a very prolific week, the pace of post updates continues in full swing. Except that one day this week, we scored only a single. But for the rest of the week, it was all sixes with one extra run from an overthrow.

The blog scored 38 posts this week. Of these 38, we had only one guest post for the week – by Santosh Ojha ji. A total of 36 films made their appearance, with two films scoring two appearances each. We had 1 film that reached yippeee status. A whopping 15 films made their debut this week. That is close to almost half the films that got featured that week.  Since that week was done with, of the 36 films featured, 26 films have been formally and fully yippeee’d. Ten of them are still awaiting their numbers to be fully showcased. Given below is the detailed chart for the week. You will notice a new column and new notations today. I will explain them later in this write up.

You may notice that I used the phrase ‘formally and fully’ to qualify the yippeee status of the films. The reason I used this phrase is the following. As we are making progress towards our ideal of bringing on board all the Hindi film songs, we do find ourselves against certain difficult limitations. These have to do with – one, non availability of certain songs, and two, erroneous or missing information about some films and songs. I will highlight these situations as we progressively face them. For this week, here are the difficult situations that I came across.

The first one is the film ‘Mukhdaa’ from 1951. This film debuted on our blog on 16th Sep ten years back. The film has 11 songs, as per the Geet Kosh listings. We have located and posted 9 of them over the past decade. The remaining two are practically untraceable. Firstly, of the 11 songs listed, one was never put on a gramophone record, as the producers planned for and contracted with HMV for only 5 discs, which means 10 songs in all. The song at serial no. 6 – “Dekho Jee Pehli Baar, Kiya Hai Tumse Pyaar” was never released on a gramophone record. Then comes a footnote in the Geet Kosh which states that one record, N36900 was ordered, but then cancelled later on. It never got published, although the songs were recorded. This record was supposed to carry the two songs at serial no. 3 – “Mehlon Ke Rehne Waale Mehlon Mein Hans Rahe Hain” and serial no. 7 – “Poochhiye Na Haal Jee, Palle Nahin Maal Jee”. So that would mean that we should have 3 missing songs and not 2.

But wait, here is one more interesting twist in the story. It seems that after cancelling the publication of the record N36900, the producers went ahead and commissioned one more record, with number N50008. Looking at the huge gap in the series number of the records, it is clear that the latter record (N50008) was ordered much later than 1951. Strangely, this newly ordered record now carried the song at serial no. 7 – “Poochhiye Na Haal. . .” and the song at serial no. 10 – “Jaa Teri Meri, Meri Teri”. This latter song at serial no. 10 was already published and is available as one side of the record with number N36870, the flip side of which carries the song at serial no. 5 – “Neele Se Dupatte Pe Hain Peeli Peeli Dhaariyaan”. The net outcome of these, what I shall call – confusing decisions – is that the song at serial no. 10 – “Jaa Teri Meri. . .” is now available on two distinct published gramophone records for this film. And the song at serial no. 3 – “Mehlon Ke Rehne Waale. . .” has got lost, probably forever. The saving grace is that the song at serial no. 7 – “Poochhiye Na Haal Jee. . .” is now available. It might also have been lost forever, but for this confusing set of decisions, which saved this song for posterity. And so the songs at serial no. 6 (this one not planned at all for release on gramophone record) and the song at serial no. 3 (unpublished due to cancellation of one gramophone record), are likely never going to surface. They may still be existing on some original spool tapes from the original recordings, and/or they may be on the soundtrack of the film. However, since both these items are not yet available in public domain, and with very little likelhood that they will make an appearance in the future, we could label them as LFe (Lost Forever). That does leave us two songs short of ever declaring this film as yippeee’d.

Coming to the second similar instance, also from this week. The film is ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ from 1962. It had made its debut on our blog on 23rd Dec, 2008. The seventh song of this film was posted on 24th Sep, 2011. Geet Kosh lists 8 songs for this film. The missing song is the one at serial no. 5 – “Sahil Ki Taraf Kashti Le Chal, Toofaan Ke Thapede Sehna Kya”. As per the listing, this song was recorded in the voice of Hemant Kumar. This song never got published on a gramophone record. Now eight total songs will completely fit on 4 gramophone discs. But the producer seems to have taken a decision to completely omit this song. In fact, the song at serial no. 6 – “Bhanwra Bada Naadaan Haaye”, makes appearance on two gramophone discs nos. N54036 and N54038, while the above mentioned song in Hemant Kumar’s voice has been completely axed from any publication. It does not exist in the film. The film information booklet lists this song, and that is just about it. Here is one more case where a song qualifies to be labeled as LFe. And that also leaves the film ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ one song short of being declared as yippeee’d.

Based on the above discussed circumstances, these two films will never reach the Yippeee status. So I have a proposal here to address this situation. In the face of such stern circumstances, I propose that we introduce a Yippeee variant status – ‘Conditional Yippeee’ – to be indicated as ‘Yc’ in our charts and tables. In such cases, when we come to the conclusion that it is (almost) impossible that one or more songs of a certain film will ever be traced, we may declare that film to be Conditinally Yippeee’d, once all the possibly available songs are accounted for on our blog. The proposal is presented for consideration of the team, and I would request other members to please present their views and comments. In the table above of the week’s status ten years ago, I am provisionally marking these two films as ‘Yc’, pending agreement by the team,

This week we have one more case of a partial missing song in a multi part / multi version scenario. In the case of the film ‘Chaand Mere Aaja’ from 1957. The main theme song of the film – “Chaand Ko Dekho Ji” / “Chaand Mere Aa Ja Re” – has one additional part, identified as the sad version. Details of this part are provided by dear Prakash ji, including the additional lyrics. Just that we as editors have not yet gotten around to update the post itself. In fact, the HFGK listing shows 7 songs, which include this sad version of the song. This sad version of the song is not released on gramophone discs, and is available only from the film itself. My effort is to get this post updated within a day, and be able to change the pending status of this film from ‘0.5’ to ‘0’. And by the way, the Geet Kosh listing has one incomplete information relating to this song. It lists Lata Mangeshkar as the singer of this part. However, as we view the video, we find that this part is in the voices of both Rafi Sb and Lata ji.

Let me come to the song for today. This discussion on errors and limitations has become quite long. I also wanted to write about the film ‘Doctor’ of 1941 and the related info error in the Geet Kosh. I encountered this error the previous week. But I will write about it in the next episode of this series.

‘Hercules’ of 1964, has quite a dubious distinction to note. The first song, the debut of this film, came on board on 18th September, 2010. Today, I bring on board the second song of this film. Interesting that this film has been in hibernation for a full decade, despite the fact that there are some wonderful songs pending for this film. As is evidenced by the song in this post – a Helen dance song in a royal darbaar setting. The words come from the pen of Anand Bakshi, the music is from the mind of N Datta and the singing voice is Asha Bhosle. On screen we see Dara Singh, as Hercules, in chains, possibly being prepared for execution. Other actors we see in this not so clear a video clip, are Nishi, BM Vyas, Maruti Rao, Leela Misra, P Kailash and Indira Billi.

Helen’s performance is her usual self – so wonderfully elegant and graceful, even as she gives a sensuous performance. The ease with which she is coordinating the dance movements, the lip syncing, the facial expressions et al – she is a master class all by herself.

I request the readers to please do comment on the proposed ’Conditional Yippeee’ status and the associated notation introduced in this week’s chart. Thanks.

Five of these movies have been YIPPEED by now. That leaves us with “Lakeeren”(1954) and “Kal Aaj Aur Kal”(1972) as the two unYIPPEED movies whose songs are eligible for discussion today (15 september 2020) in our Blog Ten Year Challenge.

Now it is time to take up “Kal Aaj Aur Kal”(1971) as well.

“Kal Aaj Aur Kal”(1971) is a movie that had some extremely popular songs in it. The movie had six songs in it. Three of its most popular songs have been covered in the blog so far.
Here are the details of the three songs that have been covered so far:-

As blog Ten Year challenge exercise, here is a song from “Kal Aaj Aur Kal”(1971) today, just like we had a song from this movie exactly ten years ago. This song is sung by Sharda. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

Unlike the other three songs from the movie, which were extremely popular, the song under discussion is one that I had never heard before. HFGK mentions that this song was not includeed in the movie.

Lyrics of the song and other BTYC details were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

I wonder if the song, even though it was excluded from the movie, was picturised. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on this matter.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 78
———————————————————————————–

This day ten years ago viz 13 september 2010 saw six songs getting covered. The fist post appeared at 6:06 AM whereas the sixth and final post of the day appeared at 17:37 AM. Six songs posted within 91 minutes. That is called making short work of the daily blog target ! 🙂

Here are the details of the six songs discussed on 9 september 2010:-

Blog Post number Song Movie Year of release Remarks
2957 Man letaa hai angdaayi Anmol Ghadi 1946 YIPPEED
2958 Haay re insaan ki majbooriyaan Ghoonghat 1960 7 songs covered out of 10
2959 Jhanan jhanjhanaa ke apni paayal Aashiq 1962 YIPPEED

2961 Ba hosho hawaas mein deewaanaa Night in London 1967 YIPPEED
2962 One two three baby yaa yaa yaa Kismat 1968 YIPPEED

As can be seen from the above table, five movies out of six whose songs were covered ten years ago have since been YIPPEED. “Anmol Ghadi”(1946) and “Kismat”(1968) got YIPPEED ten years back on this day viz on 13 september 2010 !

So, that leaves us with “Ghoonghat”(1960) as the sole movie eligible for today’s blog Ten year challenge.

As many as seven songs of “Ghoonghat”(1960) have been covered so far. Here are the details:-

Song Posted On
Laage naa moraa jiyaa 13.05.2009
Mori chham chham baaje paayaliyaa 14.05.2009
Kyaa kyaa nazaaren dikhaatin hai ankhiyaan 06.09.2009

Ye zindagi ka mausam aur ye samaa suhaanaa 24.03.2012
Meri pat raakho Giridhaari 8.09.2020

Here is the eighth song from Ghoonghat”(1960) to appear in the blog. This song is a stage dance performance song. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised on Helen and others. No, it is not a cabarat song, rather it is a proper desi dance performance, where Helen lip syncs in not just Hindi but also in Tamil, Bangla and Punjabi, accompanied by the appropriate regional dances as well.

The picturisation shows Helen and others on stage. Dancing legend Gopi Krishna also joins during the Tamil part of the song.

The audience seated in the front row include Pradeep Kumar, Bina Rai, Minu Mumtaz etc.

Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravi.

Lyrics of the song were sent to me by Prakashchandra, who has done a gallant job in attempting to note down the lyrics of all the languages. I request our knowledgeable readers to help suggest corrections in the lyrics wherever applicable.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 76
———————————————————————————–

This date 10 years ago (11 september 2010) was rather unremarkable, in contrast to the same day in 1893, or 2011, when rather more important events had taken place. On 11 september 1893, Swami Vivekanand delivered an iconic and eloquent speech at the Chicago Convention of Parliament of Religions. Introducing Hinduism to the world, Swami Vivekanand spoke about intolerance, religion and the need to end all forms of fanaticism. on 11 september 2001, One of the biggest terrorist attacks took place at New York.

In cricketing news, Lala Amarnath was born this day in 1911. Sri Lanka earned their first test match victory on this day in 1985 (no prizes for guessing that it was against India).

On this day in 1967, Indian troop gave a bloody nose to Chinese aggressors, when Chinese troops got a taste of their own medicine and nearly 300 plus Chinese troops was killed at Nathu La (Sikkim- China bordeer) when Brigadier Sagat Singh took matter in his own hands and retaliated in a manner that left Chinese army shellshocked for nearly half a century.

11 september 2010 was a rather more sedate day when things happened in a routine way, not only around the world but even in the blog. Six songs from six different movies were covered on that day. Here are the details :-

Blog Song number Song Movir-year Remarks
2945 Kyaa mil gayaa Bhagwaan tumhe dil ko dukhaa ke Anmol Ghadi 1946 YIPPEED
2946 Achchaa hotaa jo dil mein tu aayaa naa hotaa Naadaan 1951 10 songs covered out of 11
2947 Radha na bole na bole na bole re Aazaad 1955 YIPPEED
2948 Chaand chupchaap hai sitaare gumsum Daal Mein Kaala 1964 3 songs covered out of 8
2949 Chale chalen se sajan dheere dheere Paayal 1957 5 songs covered out of 9
2950 Mehfil meri raaten meri Badnaam 1975 YIPPEED

Three out of six of these movies have since been YIPPEED. So today we have as many as three movies that can be taken up in our “Blog Ten Year Challenge” exercise.

“Paayal”(1957), one of these BTYC eligible movies was produced By Joseph Thomas and directed by Joseph Taliath Jr.for Madras Talkies. The movie had Padmini, Sunil Dutt, David, Baby Naaz, Ragini, Bipin Gupta, Raj Mehra(Guest Artiste), Achla Sachdev, Meenu Mumtaz, Sheoraj(Shivraj),Laxman Rao, Agha,Praveen Paul,Puri,Bhavan etc in it.

The movie had nine songs in it. The movie made its debut in the blog ten years ago on this date. Five songs have been covered in the blog so far as detailed here:-
