“Mome Ki Gudiya”(1972) was produced and directed by Mohan Mukar for M K Films Private Limited, Bombay. The movie had Tanuja, Ratan Chopra (new discovery), Jeva, Bhahmchaari, Meena T, Tuntun, Paro, Raj Mehra, Rashid Khan, Helen, Gopal Sahgal, Ridku, Brahm Bhardwaj, N Date, Subhash, Prakash Antra, Sunil Sharma, Ajay Kumar, Umakant Rao, Prakash Bhatia, Prakash Vaid, Naseb Singh etc in it with special appearances by Premnath, Nazeer Hussain and Om Prakash.

This “social” movie, which was apparently made to launch Ratan Chopra in Hindi movies, failed as a launch vehicle. Those were the days when failure of a movie meant failure of music of the movie as well, but that was not so in this case. There were five songs in it and these songs were quite popular. Anand Bakshi had sung two songs in the movie. The song “baaghon mein bahaar aayi” was one of the most popular songs of those days, as far as I was concerned.

Here is the fifth and final song from “Mome Ki Gudiya”(1972) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song is picturised as a cabarat dance. I thought that it was Madhumati(Helen’s lookalike) but the name of Helen is there is the cast and Madhumati’s is not there. So I guess that the dancer is Helen, after all. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation.

With this song, “Mome Ki Gudiya”(1972) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

“Anjaane Mehmaan”(1975) was directed by Gyanesh Mukherji for Golap Pictures, Calcutta. This “social” movie had Sumita Sanyal, Samit Bhanj, Sukhen Das, Ajitsh, Gyanesh Mukherji, Sateendra Bhattacharya, Ajay, Premanshu, Ravi Ghosh, Sabitabrat Dutt, Subrata Chatterji, Padma Devi, Menaka Devi, Geeta Dey, Neelima Chakraborty, Dipika Roy, Amiya, Mrinal, Shankar, Jeewan Apoorva, Master Parth etc with guest appearance by Dilip Roy.

This movie, which was too obscure to get noticed even during its time, had four obscure songs in it.

Here is the first song from “Anjaane Mehmaan”(1975) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Manna Dey. Yogeshwar Kuseshwar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ajay Das.

“Qurbaani”(1980) was produced and directed by Feroz Khan. The movie had Feroz Khan, Vinod Khanna, Zeenat Aman, Amjad Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Aruna Irani, Amrish Puri and Kadar Khan etc in it.

I knew that Feroz Khan’s movies were inspired from Western movies, but I never knew that he would unbshedly lift frame by frame scenes. It turns out that the movie is almost a frame by frame lift from “The Master touch”(1974), an Italian/German curry western movie.

One would argue that “Qurbani”(1980) had songs in it and that way it had at least its songs that were not inspired from the movie. Indeed that is what one though till now.

It turns out that even the songs of this movie were inspired from foreign sources, and not necessarily from the usual sources.

Take the case of “Laila Main Laila” song rom “Qurbaani”(1980). I thought that it was one the “better” and “original” compositions created during the “disco” era of HFM. But I was wrong. It turns out that this popular song is a direct lift from the composition “Chicano” by an African group called “Black Blood”.

Here is this “Qurbaani”(1980) song “Laila Main Laila” which is sung by Kanchan, Amit Kumar and chorus. The song is picturised as a “disco” song on Zeenat Aman, Amjad Khan and others.

Lyricist is Indeewar. He gets the credit for fitting in lyrics to go with the tune. Kalyanji Anandji are the music arrangers, rather than music composers, for this song.

Today (31 march 2018) is the last day of the financial year 2017-18 that is followed in India. One would like to close the accounts of the financial year meeting all the targets and start the new financial year with a clean slate.

Today also happens to be the 46th remembrance day of Meena Kumari (1 August 1933– 31 March 1972). I was a school kid when she died and we school kids discussed this matter among ourselves. Our verdict was that her demise would help the box office prospects of “Paakeeza”which was scheduled to be released soon.

She died at quite a young age. She was not even 39 at that time. With the benefit of hindsight, one feels that she was in urgent need to psychological counselling just like Dilip Kumar, who was the male counterpart of Meena Kumari in playing tragedy roles but who successfully managed to come out of the after-effects of playing tragic roles in his career.

Ironicallty, Meena Kumari had begun her career playing cheerful happy roles, against Kishore Kumar, no less.

A vast majority of movies featuring Meena Kumari are already YIPPEED in the blog so there is no scope of discussing a song picturised on Meena Kumari on this occasion. Fortunately, I could still come across some un YIPPEED movies with Meena Kumari in them. “Daana Pani”(1953) is one such movie. This movie, which was directed by V M Vyas for Sunrise Pictures, Bombay had Meena Kumari, Shashi Kapoor senior, Weera, Chhagan, Romeo, Radha Krishnan, Chitra, Wasti etc in it.

The movie had eight songs in it. Three of these songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the fourth song from “Daana Pani”(1953) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Rafi and Shamshad Begam. Kaif Irfani is the lyricist. Music is composed by Mohan Junior.

Only the audio of the song is available. Uploaders of the audio link (s) of this song have carried the picture of Shashi Kapoor in the link, but the Shashi Kapoor in this movie was a different person and senior in age compared to Raj Kapoor’s kid brother (who was only 15 years of age when this movie was released). The song was most likely picturised on Bharat Bhushan and Meena Kumari. I request our knowledgeable reades to throw light on the picturisation of the song.

1971 – the turn of a decade, that took away, and was destined to take away, many things that were loved and prized in the industry.

The 1960s ended; and with that, an era came to close. An era, when music and melody ruled supreme in Hindi films. Shades of things to come had already started to appear in this decade. And the transition would be sort of complete by the time the world turned into the 1970s.

Connecting this thought with the turn of that decade and some of the people connected with the film that we are bringing in to Yippeee land tonight.

1971 – it was the year when Jaikishan passed away. I remember that issue of Filmfare where this news was announced. I would be too young to know anything much about the music and the music makers of Hindi films, and Jaikishan was just another name to me at that time. All the details and their significance would fill in many years later. That day, that issue of Filmfare, the one thing that stuck to my mind was – there is so little color in this issue, so much black and white it is. Just 41 years – not an age to go. But then, as always, our arguments and desires stand nowhere in this arena.

1971 – and the closure of the young baby faced flamboyance of the Golden Boy of the Sixties. Yes, Shammi Kapoor. Having blasted through the decade with an average of almost 3 musical hits of his own peculiar genre every year, the baby face was getting puffy, as was the midriff. 1971 was the time that he bade farewell to the lead roles and after the release of ‘Andaaz’, ‘Jaane Anjaane’, ‘Preetam’ and ‘Jawaan Mohabbat’ that same year, the next that we see him is three years later – 1974, as Dhoopu, the boisterous owner of the ‘Dhoop Chhaon’ café, all stacked with a beard on his face and suspenders to hold up his pants. There was this one exception though – the film ‘Chhote Sarkar’ with him in the lead role opposite to Sadhna, was released in 1974. But that we know was a much delayed release of a film from mid 1960s, on account of Sadhna’s health problems.

1971 – the perky and the chirpy Sunita of ‘Teesri Manzil’ (1966), was still being readily cast opposite to the newer crop of heroes – Jeetendra and ‘Caravan’ (1971); Rajesh Khanna and ‘Aan Milo Sajna’ (1970); Navin Nischol and ‘Nadaan’ (1971); Vijay Arora and ‘Rakhi Aur Hathkadi’ (1972) et al. But these releases were also interspersed with other screenplays where Asha is one of the two pairs in the film, obviously the elder one – ‘Samadhi’ (1972), ‘Heera’ (1973), ‘Anjaan Raahen’ (1974), ‘Zakhmee’ (1975) et al; the transition successfully moving towards senior roles, undoubtedly.

Many a facet of an old order changed or were changing when 1971 turned on. Through the rest of the decade, we would see the passage of oh so dearly loved legendary singers – Mukesh, Rafi Sb. The color of Hindi film music would be changed. . . forever.

‘Jawaan Mohabbat’ – a film to be remembered, not just for the good music – some of its songs are so readily recall-able as listening favorites on the radio, but also as the phasing out of two very attractive leading artists who had ruled the industry top line for the entire decade of the 1960s. Asha had her debut opposite to Shammi Kapoor in the 1959 film ‘Dil Deke Dekho’. The two would be paired again as love birds three more times during the next twelve years – ‘Teesri Manzil’ in 1966, ‘Pagla Kahin Ka’ in 1970 and the Yippeee film of today – ‘Jawaan Mohabbat’ in 1972. ‘Jawaan Mohabbat’ – it was about young hearts in love. But in 1972, the future of these young hearts was all but moving to senior elevations in the screenplay.

The film is produced under the banner of Rupanjali Films, Bombay and is directed by Bhappi Soni. The cast of actors of this film is listed as Shammi Kapoor, Asha Parekh, Balraj Sahni, Rajendra Nath, Nirupa Roy, Pran, Shashikala, Dhumal, Raj Mehra, Madhavi, Krishan Dhawan, Kumud Tripathi, Baby Sarika, Mansaram, Ravikant, Sujata, Madhumati, Daisy Irani, Madan Kenny, and Vimal Chadha.

The seven songs of this film are shared amongst three writers, with Hasrat Jaipuri leading the honors with five songs and Rajendra Krishan and Shailendra doing one song each. Today’s final song of this film to find its place on our blog, is a solo sung by Asha Bhosle. From the words and the style of singing, it appears to be a song of enticement. A song that would most likely be performed on screen by someone like Helen. However, not seeing her name in the list of actors, my guess is that this song is performed by Shashikala.

Today, we bring on board another missing film from 1967. ‘Shamsheer’ is an obscure film, which many people won’t remember now. We become aware of such films, mostly through the Geet Kosh listings.

A film by the same name was also produce a decade or so earlier – in 1953. ‘Shamsheer’ – meaning a ‘sword’ – this word appears in the title of many films actually. There are films by the name ‘Shamsheerbaaz’ – in 1940 and 1953 (yes, in 1953, both ‘Shamsheer’ and ‘Shamsheerbaaz’ appeared in the same year). Then way back in 1935, we have another film titled ‘Shamsheer e Arab’.

The 1967 film ‘Shamsheer’ was produced under the banner of Sangram Pictures of Bombay, and and was directed by Babubhai Mistry. This film was costume drama. One look as the list of actors, and we realize this is a Sheikh Mukhtar film, with the list of actors reading as Prithviraj, Sheikh Mukhtar, Geetanjali, Ajeet Singh, Aruna Irani, Jeevan, Maruti, Helen, Madhumati, Lakshmichaya, Jeevankala, Ratnamala, Sarita, Uma Dutt, Paulson, Ridku, and Meenakshi.

Geet Kosh lists six songs for this film, which are written by four songwriters – two songs by Aish Kanwal, two by Asad Bhopali, one by Bharat Vyas and one by Madhukar Rajasthani. This song is written by Asad Bhopali. Music direction is by the duo of Lala-Sattaar. Readers are familiar with the trio of Lala-Asar-Sattaar. Of these, Lala and Sattaar also gave music together as a duo.

So presenting today, the first song of the 1967 film ‘Shamsheer’. It is a quick paced ‘nok jhonk’ type duet which is sung by Raf Sb and Shamshad Begum. I request our more knowledgeable readers to kindly add more information for this film and this song, if available.

“Confused”? “Flummoxed” or I should be asking “stumped”? Of course, all the words mean the same. I am sure the additions that I have done to open this post have set people thinking.

Well it has something to do with the last three songs that were posted from the movie “Mome Ki Gudiya” (that is how “mom” was spelt in the title card and the movie’s censor certificate dated 12th April 1972). The famous website Hindigeetmala.net lists four songs for the movie, but as I sat through the movie to recheck I found the movie had five songs. I think HFGK will also give the same number, the song “Bandhan toote na sanwariya” comes twice then the number of songs count will be six.

“Reshma jawaan ho gayi” is the first song in the movie; posted with a post by Sudhirji. That song happens when Tanuja who plays Sheel takes objection to being called “chutki”.

“Whenever I had been to Brindavan I have seen shooting of Hindi and South India movies. Except for the last time.
Now It has gone to dogs. The flowers have wilted and trees are dried up. Please do not take your parents as one has to walk compulsorily for few kilometres”.

This was our Nitin Shah’s comment after the above song. I must say I had a similar experience when I visited Brindavan this year, in the month of January. The flowers were not there but some lighting still happens, they have a musical fountain show and most of the fountains were working but I suppose visiting the place in summer might disappoint a tourist as there will be little water in the dam.

“Baaghon me bahaar aayi” is the second song which plays when Sheel and Ravi (Ratan Chopra) are on their honeymoon. It is picturised in Brindawan Gardens of Mysore. The movie’s makers have thanked the people and government of Mysore state for cooperating in the making of the movie. (A small doubt- was Mysore still a separate state in 1971/ 72 ?). This was the first song from the movie to be posted on the blog.

The third song from the movie that is posted happens at karwa chauth. “Bandhan toote na sanwariya” occurs just before climax. Post the song Sheel shoots her mama Shaligram played by Jeewan just as he tries to stab Ravi.

So that then are the three posts for this movie posted in 2009, 2011 and 2014 – there I have explained 9+2 and 11+3. We are in 2018 i.e 14+4 simple 🙂

I sat through the movie before writing this post and here is the gist of the movie:

Ravi, the only son of wealthy widower Rai Bahadur Gangaram, falls in love with fellow-collegian, Sheel, but is shocked to find that she is to be his future step-mother. His father decides to step away, lets the couple get married, and shortly thereafter passes away. A few months later, Sheel gets pregnant and her parents as well as her maternal uncle, Shaligram, come to visit her. It is during this visit that Ravi will find out that Sheel has been living a secret life, and the real reason why she married him. Devastated, he will face even more trauma and scandal when the Police will arrest his wife for murder.

The secret of Sheel’s life is that her parents (Paro and Rashid Khan) and mama use her to lure rich old men into marriage and see to it that Sheel doesn’t consummate the marriage. And a few days after marriage they decamp with the rich man’s wealth. One such old man is Om Prakash who tries to force himself on Sheel but she injures him and flees thinking she has killed him. Another secret of Sheel’s life is that she has been kidnapped by the trio in infancy from Nasir Hussain’s haveli. This fact is unearthed by Premnath when he appears in court to defend Sheel.

So that then is what the movie was all about. 🙂

I think “Dolly ki Doli” which came in 2015 had a similar story of a young con-girl marrying into rich families.

The song with this post is the fourth song in the movie. It comes in Sheel’s dream when Ravi tells her “how much he has waited for her?” Etc. etc. It is a rather long song. It is in the voice of Anand Bakshi. This movie had two songs that were sung by Anand Bakshi. After sitting through the movie I felt the voice suited the actor perfectly. Another thing that I found was this was the debut of Anand Bakshi as a singer.

The movie opens by paying shraddhanjali to composer Jaikishan the composer who was part of three of Mohan Kumar’s initial movies.

Today (March 30th, 2018) is the 16th death anniversary of Anand Bakshi. He who gave us songs which sounded as if written by a common man. Such simple words to convey normal feelings leke a good-bye “achcha toh hum chalte hai”; monetary lessons “aamdani athannee kharcha rupiaya”; a man’s plight after marriage “brahma o brahma”; a host of lullabies “sooyi ja tara”, “aakhiyon mein chote chote sapne sajaayeke” (to list just two); roothna-manaana “Rona kabhi nahin rona”, “nahin main nahin dekh sakta tujhe rote huye” and songs with roadside Romeo kind of lyrics “jumma chumma de de”.

He has written songs for three films with the title “Majboor”; two “Mehbooba” (one of which released in 2008 six years after he had passed away). He was a master with words and if I may say- in the same league as Majrooh Sultanpuri in the sense that he had a long career of almost 40 years and wrote similarly simple lyrics and was always in demand by all film makers.

He had an ambition to be a singer too which was showcased in a few songs for which he used to sing the opening lines etc. I had discovered a song where he had given playback along with Bhupinder, Manna Dey and Kishore Kumar for “Sholay” but unfortunately that song never featured in that movie. I was aware of one full length song in “Mome Ki Gudiya” but before I sat to write this post I found that was already posted. But I am not upset as I found a very beautiful song from the same movie but it is rather long almost 6 minutes. Here it is:-

“Picnic” was made so popular by Hindi movies that it had become a fashionable pastime of people those days. I was a tiny school going kid those days and even we were taken on “picnic” by our school. 🙂 But I do not recall any “picnic” songs being sung on those occasions. Today’s song is from the film ‘Asiai Sitara’ (1937) aka ‘Star Of Asia’.

The film was made by Harshad and Jagtap. It was distributed by Wadia Movietone. The director was Haribhai Desai, the music was by Master Mohammed and the lyricist was Pt. Anuj. The film cast was master Vithal, Jenabai Pawar, Minoo the Mystique, Vasant pehelwan, Master Dhulia etc.

After the initial surge of the films made on mythology, parsi fantasies and folk tales, the adventurous film makers moved on to make films on social issues, comedy, stunts, social reforms, history, love stories and religious personalities. From 1935, the rise of stunt films in talkie version (thanks to Fearless Nadia) gave rise to a genre, which lasted till the 1950’s. After that, it faded to a natural death. Nowadays, all the heroes do the stunts themselves, but their films are not called stunt films.

However, the audience, which was accustomed to films of fantasy, costume and folk tales, still existed, so on and off such films too were made by older film makers. The film ‘Asiai Sitara’ was also one such costume film. This was a film originally made by Haribhai Desai of Surya Film Company, Bangalore, as a silent film in 1932. In those days, Bangalore was the main city in South Circuit, so many big film distributors (mostly Gujaratis) had their offices in Bangalore. After the demise of silent films, most of them closed their distribution offices and jumped into talkie film making in Bombay. Some prominent distributors were, Dr. Ambalal Patel and Chimanlal Desai (started Sagar Movietone), Ramniklal Shah (started Mohan Pictures, Ramnik Films etc.) and Haribhai Raghunath ji Desai (started Surya Film Company in Bangalore itself).

The story of Haribhai Desai is very interesting. He was born in a very wealthy family of a village near Kutch area of Gujarat. He was very intelligent and completed his graduation in Bombay. The silent film industry was developing very fast. Haribhai decided to jump into it. To get his fundamentals strong, he went to America and did his graduation from New York Institute of Cinematography. Coming back to India, he took up a job as a manager in Laxmi Pictures and later in Suvarna Pictures of Poona. With this experience and few distribution contracts, Haribhai landed in Bangalore and set up his shop as a distributor.

Very shortly, in 1929, he established his own film production company – Surya Film Company at Bangalore, which was his main aim in life. He went to Kolhapur, hunting for talent. Kolhapur was an important film making centre in those times. There, he found Ganapatrao Baakre (गणपतराव बाकरे) –  a very handsome, well built wrestler and a daredevil stunt actor working in Baburao Painter’s  Maharashtra Film Co. He also noticed another very good looking young man, with good physique, working in stunt films for free (he was from a rich family). He was Zunzar Rao Pawar  झुंझार राव पवार). His real name was DK Pawar, but was called by this name after his role in a successful company. Haribhai needed  good and well known actors. He lured them with higher salaries and brought them to Bangalore. Ganpat Rao was paid Rs.1000 pm in those days.

Production of silent films started rapidly. Their first film was ‘Raj Hriday’ (1929). It was released in four theatres in Bombay in October 1929. The publicity of this film was handled by Kikubhai Desai (father of Manmohan Desai). Film pamphlets were showered on Bombay city from an aeroplane, as an advertisement gimmick! No doubt the film ran to houseful audiences in all theatres. In a very short time both actors from Kolhapur became very popular and famous. Surya Films made about 40 silent films.

Meanwhile Zunzar Rao Pawar fell in love with an Anglo-Indian girl – Jena Lawson, who was looking for an entry in films. They got married and she became Jenabai Pawar. Haribhai was not the one to lose such opportunities. He made two films with Jenabai Pawar as a heroine. The first was ‘The Hawk’ (aka ‘Baaz Bahadur’, 1931) and the other was ‘Asiai Sitara’ (1932). She did not work in more films. Soon Baakre and Pawar family returned to Kolhapur, after four years in Bangalore.

When the silent era ended and talkie films flourished, Haribhai closed Surya Films and went to Bombay. There, he remade his two successful silent films, made with Jenabai Pawar, as talkie films, with the same heroine. ‘Baaz Bahadur’ was made in 1936 and ‘Asiai Sitara’ was made in 1937. Now that these were talkie films, Jenabai also sang in the film. She sang four songs in each film. Considering she was not Indian, the songs were reasonably good. Earlier the silent films had Ganapat Rao Baakre as the hero, now in talkie films, Master Vithal was the hero.

Master Vithal (1906-1969) was the first superstar of silent films. He also has the credit of being the hero of the first talkie film of India ‘Aalam Ara’ (1931). He got this role only because of his un-paralleled popularity in silent films. He was the first ‘Angry Young Man’ of Indian cinema in the 1920s and the 1930s. His films were full of stunts, fighting and daredevil acts. Master Vithal was very handsome with a very muscular physique. He was the ideal of many aspiring young actors like Bhagwan.

So, when Bhagwan became stunt film hero and a director, his ardent wish was to act with Master Vithal or direct him. By 1940, Master Vithal was almost a gone actor, with very few Hindi films. So when Bhagwan got him to act in his film ‘Naghma e Sehra’ (1945), both Bhagwan and his close friend C Ramchandra were extremely excited. CR not only gave music to this film, but also did playback singing for Master Vithal and fulfilled his wish.

Today’s generation has no idea what position Master Vithal held in the minds of Indian audience in those days. Stunt films were very popular and Master Vithal, with his handsome looks, muscular physique and daredevil stunts was extremely popular. I am perhaps one of the very few remaining now, who has seen his film. I only remember one scene from that film, in which Master Vithal jumps from a tree onto an open car, fights with the goons and takes away the heroine, who promptly embraces him. I neither remember the name of the film nor of the heroine. She might be Zebunnisa.

Master Vithal (Vithal Raghunath Desai) made his début on the stage as a child artist with Raja Pur Natak Mandali. He then started his career as a film editor with Maharashtra Films, Kolhapur which was owned by Baburao Painter. His first film role was as a female dancer in ‘Kalyancha Khajina’, a silent era film directed by Painter. He continued to work as film editor and a dancer and played minor roles in films. His first break as a male lead was in the film ‘Ratna Manjari’ (1926) produced by Sharda Studios, which he had joined earlier in 1925. After ‘Ratna Manjari’, he was a permanent fixture in the role of a hero and he was the star attraction of the films from Sharda Studios.

Sharda Studios was owned by Nanubhai Desai, Anand Prasad Kapoor and Harshadrai Mehta.  Nanubhai Desai was the studio founder and director of many stunt films produced by the company in which Vithal appeared in swashbuckling roles with Zebunnisa as his heroine. A professional wrestler, he became a very popular fearless hero acting in films on historical themes related to Rajasthan and Maharashtra; thus giving him the title ‘the Indian Douglas Fairbanks, a title Vithal hated. Audience adored him in his stunt hero role, which became his ‘forte’. By 1930, he was the highest paid male star in Indian cinema industry.

In 1930, Vithal’s popularity in stunt films attracted Ardeshir Irani of Imperial Film Company to invite him to join his company to make India’s first talkie, though Mehboob Khan was also vying for the role. Vithal, who was quite excited by Irani’s offer, accepted and moved to Irani’s newly formed film company Sagar Studios in Bombay, breaking his contract with Sharda Studios, only by few days. Nanubhai Desai was furious and he kidnapped Master Vithal. He was kept a captive, forcing him to extend the contract with Sharda Films. When Irani came to know this, he went to the court against Sharda films. Eminent lawyers like Setalwad and Mohmmed Ali Jinnah were employed by the litigating parties.

When the case started in the court, the judge asked Master Vithal, where he would like to join. That time Sharada was paying him Rs. 300 pm. Master Vithal replied that whichever company gave him more salary, he would join them. After this, there was an auction in the court and sums were spelt for master Vithal. Imperial Film company won when they offered Rs. 1200 pm as salary. The judge gave his judgement and Master Vithal joined Imperial. Thus he became the first actor to get a four figure salary in Indian Films. He was also the first actor in the industry, to own a car. After losing Master Vithal, Sharada Film company wanted a replacement for him.  They appointed P. Jairaj, an upcoming handsome and muscular actor, on a salary of Rs. 100 pm!

The following year, Master Vithal played the hero in the first Indian talkie ‘Aalam Ara’ with Zubeida as the female lead. ‘Alam Ara’ was also the first film in which music was introduced, as many as seven music scores were part of the film. As his Hindi diction was poor, he could not deliver the dialogues properly; his acting quality in histrionic roles was also questioned. He was  shown mostly in a state of trance or semi consciousness in the film and hardly had any dialogue. It is said that Vithal could not adopt himself to the new genre of talking-singing films in Hindi as he was “reduced to a hero who is (was) magically struck dumb in Alam Ara”. In 1932, he did some more silent films, which were no longer preferred by the audience. The talkies led to the decline of his career in Hindi films. Vithal would never get a major role in Hindi films again. From 1934 onward, he started doing some Marathi films realizing his limitations. From the 1940s onward, he regularly appeared in films by Bhalji Pendharkar and those featuring Lalita Pawar and Durga Khote. He also played in a side role in the 1944 blockbuster film ‘Ramshashtri’Towards the end, he played only minor roles in Marathi films; his last film appearance was in 1966.

A lot has been said about his inability to speak Urdu dialogues and there is a popular myth, that after ‘Aalam Ara’, he did not get any talkie film and he left the Bombay film industry for Kolhapur to continue his career in Marathi films. Nothing can be farther from truth, because not only Master Vithal was cast as a hero in another talkie film, by Imperial Film Company itself – ‘Anangsena’ (1931), but many other well known production houses like Wadia, Mohan, Pradeep, BK Dave, Ranjit etc. engaged him for talkie films.

However, Master Vithal who was not very comfortable with Urdu dialogues, was no more interested in doing Hindi films anymore, so he did films very selectively. He acted in 8 silent films till 1934 and 16 talkie Hindi films till 1946. He even gave music to a film ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ (1946), and also acted in it. All this after ‘Aalam Ara’.

Master Vithal is in history books as the first hero of the first Hindi talkie film and also has to his credit the introduction of a double role (by Shahu Modak) in a Bilingual film ‘Aawaara Shehzada’ (1933), which he directed (‘Autghatkecha Raja’ in Marathi). Master Vithal himself was the first to do a double role in silent film,’Prisoner of Love’ (aka ‘Raj Tarang’, 1927), made by Sharada Films.

Master Vithal acted in a total of 92 films – Hindi, Marathi, talkie and silent. He also directed two talkie films – one each in Hindi and Marathi. In one of his interviews, he regretted his decision to shift to Kolhapur in 1946 permanently as, he felt, this reduced his Hindi film participation. He had constructed a big chawl in Kolhapur and in his retirement years, he lived on its rental income. He died in 1969.

Haribhai Desai did not do anymore Hindi films. He was active in Gujarati films as a writer and director. He even made a Telugu film as a director. The film was ‘Bhaktimala’ (1941). It was made on the theme of Devdasi tradition of Maharashtra, where maidens are married to God. Actress P Bhanumathi did the main role. The film proved to be a great hit in south and remakes in southern languages were also made. This is considered a milestone movie in Telugu films.

‘Asiai Sitara’ has 8 songs. This song is sung by Master Dhulia, a famous Gujarati folk singer of repute. This song was composed as a parody of Saigal’s famous song “Balam Aaye Baso More Mann Mein” from film ‘Devdas’ (1935). The composer Master Mohammed, was famous for his patriotic songs. He had earlier composed another parody song, “Gaawo Gaawo Ae Mere Saadhu“, in the film ‘Miss Frontier Mail’ (1936), which was a parody of the KC Dey song ‘Jaao Jaao Ae Mere Sadho, Raho Guru Ke Sang‘ from film ‘Pooran Bhagat’ (1933).

The film ‘Asiai Sitara’ and singer ‘Master Dhulia’, both make a debut on the blog today.
