Vishal Bhardwaj’s Trilogy of Shakespeare Plays – 3: ‘Haider’ (2014)
————————————————–
In this article, I am exploring ‘Haider’ (2014), the last film of the Shakesperean trilogy by Vishal Bhardwaj which is adapted from ‘Hamlet’ (1599).
In a talk with ‘Mumbai Mirror’ just before the release of ‘Haider’ (2014), Vishal Bhardwaj said that he took a long gap (8 years) from Shakespearean trilogy. For the final film on Shakespearean trilogy, he had two plays in mind – ‘King Lear’ and ‘Hamlet’. Finally, he chose ‘Hamlet’. The film was majorly shot in around Srinagar and Pahalgam in winter months probably to give a feel of gloomy atmosphere inherent in the story. As with his earlier two films of Shakespearean trilogy, Vishal Bhardwaj molded ‘Hamlet’ with intra-family drama in Kashmir in the background of militancy in 1995.
The main characters in ‘Hamlet’ (1599) and their counterparts in ‘Haider’ (2014) are presented in a tabular form below:
Vishal Bhardwaj felt that the idea of ghost in the film may not be believable to the current generation. So, he developed an additional character in Roohdaar who has spent time with Dr Hilaal in detention camp.
In Hamlet | In Haider | Remarks |
---|---|---|
King Hamlet of Denmark | Dr Hilaal Meer (Narendra Jha) | In ‘Hamlet’, there is no character of King Hamlet. His names comes only when his death is announced. In ‘Haider’ (2014), Dr. Hilaal Meer has been shown treating an injured militants in his house. He also appears in army detention camp and also with Haider in his childhood in flashback. |
Prince Hamlet, the son of deceased King Hamlet of Denmark and nephew of Claudius. | Haider (Shahid Kapoor), son of deceased Dr Hilaal Meer and nephew of Khurram Meer. | The tragic hero. Vishal Bhardwaj has made the character of Haider in ‘Haider’ (2014) much more aggressive than Prince Hamlet of ‘Hamlet’ (1599) |
Claudius, younger brother of King Hamlet. | Khurram Meer (Kay Kay Menon), younger brother of Dr Hilaal Meer. | The villainous character responsible for the death of his elder brother. While Claudius becomes the king of Denmark and marries the widow queen, Khurram marries widow of his elder brother and becomes a political leader. |
Gertrude, Queen of Denmark, and mother of Prince Hamlet. | Ghazala (Tabu), wife of Dr Hilaal Meer and mother of Haider. | – |
Polonius, Counsellor to Claudius. | Parvez Lone (Lalit Parimoo), Police Inspector who works in close association with Khurram. | – |
Ophelia, daughter of Polonius. | Arshia (Shraddha Kapoor), daughter of Parvez Lone, a journalist and the beloved of Haider. | Arshia in ‘Haider’ (2014) is more independent than Ophelia in ‘Hamlet’ who is shown as a meek character. |
Ghost of Prince Hamlet’s father | There is no ghost but a character, Roohdaar (Irrfan Khan) does the same role as of ghost in ‘Hamlet’. | |
Laertes, son of Polonius who is based in France. | Liyaqat, (Aamir Bashir) son of Parvez Lone who is based in Bengaluru. | – |
Horatio, Prince Hamlet’s friend. | No equivalent character. | Vishal Bhardwaj has combined the role of Arshia both as the beloved and friend of Haider. |
‘Haider’ (2014) was jointly produced by Vishal Bhardwaj Pictures and UTV and was directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. The cast included Shahid Kapoor, Tabu, Shraddha Kapoor, Kay Kay Menon, Irrfan Khan (special appearance), Ashish Vidyarthi (special appearance), Lalit Parimoo, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Aamir Bashir etc. The Censor Board has given the film U/A certificate (minor can watch the film under parental guidance) after some cuts suggested in the films and the director agreed to them.
This is one of a few films’ story which I found difficult to summarise as almost every scene in the film is important link to the continuity of the story. So, I have omitted it after finding that the summary of the story itself was more than 1000 words!
In my view, this film should be treated more as an intra-family drama of a Kashmiri family than the commentary on the political situations that prevailed in the mid-1990s in Kashmir. In the divided Meer family, the Khurram (Claudius in ‘Hamlet’) uses Army’s counter-insurgency operations to achieve his political ambition and clear the way for making formal the adulterous relationship with his elder brother’s wife, Ghazala (Queen Gertrude). His nephew, Haider (Prince Hamlet) uses militancy to take revenge against his uncle, Khurram for his betrayal of his father, Dr Hilaal Meer (King Hamlet of Denmark) and for killing him. So, portrayal of and commentaries on militancy and army’s counter-insurgency operations become inevitable part of the film. In ‘Hamlet’, all the main characters are killed or commit suicide. In ‘Haider’ (2014), Khurram (Claudius) and Haider (Prince Hamlet) have been shown seriously injured. The films end with a scene in which a seriously injured Khurram lies on the snow with his lower part missing due to a blast while Haider, also seriously injured walks away from the camera in the midst of dead bodies of militants and para military forces. The director has left to the imagination of the film audience to come o a conclusion as to what will happen to them.
Vishal Bhardwaj has tried to realistically present as to how a majority of innocent Kashmiris who have nothing to do with militancy have been caught in the ‘catch-22’ situation. They cannot antagonise militants and the army out of fear. However, I wish Vishal Bhardwaj had balanced this realistic approach with the other side of the realities by giving some footage in the film as to how difficult is for the army/paramilitary forces to decide between guilty and innocent in hostile and treacherous environments where trust is in deficit. One of the cardinal principles of army and para-military forces is that suspects are treated as guilty until proven otherwise. Also, there is no even a small footage in the film of the extreme hardship the minority communities suffered exactly during the time-frame chosen in the film.
‘Haider’ (2014) has 8 songs of which two songs are from the published poems of Faiz Ahmed Faiz and rests are written by Gulzar. All the songs are set to music by Vishal Bhardwaj in melodramatic mood in keeping with the story of the film.
I have selected a story-telling song from the film, ‘bismil bismil bulbul-e-bismal’ which corresponds to ‘Mousetrap’, a play within the play in ‘Hamlet’. In both ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Haider’ (2014), the play/song is a turning point for Hamlet/Haider to take revenge against his uncle. The song is written by Gulzar and rendered by Sukhwinder Singh and chorus. The song is presented in an opera style for which Norway-based Sudesh Adhana was entrusted with choreography of the song. Renowned puppeteer, Dadi Pudumjee specifically made puppets for this song, one of which was the tallest puppet (100 feet) used in any Hindi film.
The song was picturised at the ruins of Martand Sun temple (located on the way to Pahalgam from Srinagar). Since the shooting was scheduled in the peak winter season, every morning and even during the shooting, the snow accumulated on the dancing arena had to be cleared. On the days of the song picturisation, there used to be 5000-6000 people, many coming from mofussil areas for watching the shooting which created problems for the crew. Finally, Vishal Bhardwaj decided to make them sit in the raised arena of the temple complex in an orderly fashion and made them a part of the song sequence.(As revealed in his TV talk).
The song comes in the film at a time when Haider is emotionally upset after he becomes aware of the conspiracy of his uncle, Khurram in for his father’s death as told to him by Roohdaar (Irrfan Khan). Haider performs the dance in the presence of his uncle, Khurram and mother, Ghazala in celebration of their marriage. Haider’s intention in this dance performance is to gauge from the expressions of his uncle to confirm what Roohdaar had told him was true.
According to Sukhwinder Singh, Vishal Bhardwaj wanted the elements of Kashmiri folk music and folk dance for this song. He hired local musicians to play the Sarangi and the Rabab and recorded with them in a studio there. While picturising the song, he even invited these musicians to the shoot, and they joined Shahid Kapoor in playing Rabab. Vishal blended Kashmiri folk music with western opera music (Source: E-Times, 26/09/2014).

Vishal Bhardwaj’s Trilogy of Shakespeare Play – 2: ‘Omkara’ (2006)
In this article, I am exploring the second film of Vishal Bhardwaj’s Shakespeare trilogy, ‘Omkara’ (2006) which is based on ‘Othello’ (1603).
There is a trivia which was narrated by Vishal Bhardwaj in a TV interview about a couple of years back. At Goa International Film Festival, he met Naseeruddin Shah who enquired as to what he was currently doing. Vishal Bhardwaj said that he had just completed a script based on Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’. Naseeruddin Shah retorted that ‘Othello’ was the weakest character in Shakespeare’s play and it will not work in Indian context. Vishal Bhardwaj gave him a copy of the script to read. Next day morning, Naseeruddin Shah came to Vishal Bhardwaj and said that he had read the script in the night and he would do the character of Bhaisaheb in the film. This shows the power of screenplay writing which makes a so-called weak Shakespeare play strong.
For ‘Maqbool’ (2004), Vishal Bhardwaj had to wait for nearly two years to get a producer/financier after the script was ready. But it was a smooth sailing for him in ‘Omkara’ (2006). He not only got a producer, he also got all the main actors as per his requirements. In ‘Omkara’ (2006), Vishal Bhardwaj has blended his artistic approach with commercial elements to avoid the repeat of the box office failure of ‘Maqbool’ (2004). His strategy worked and ‘Omkara’ (2006) fared very well on the box office front.
‘Omkara’ (2006) was produced by Kumar Mangat Pathak (Ajay Devgan’s Manager and the executive producer of most of Ajay Devgan Films) and was directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. The cast included Ajay Devgan and Kareena Kapoor in the lead roles supported by Saif Ali Khan, Konkana Sen Sharma, Vivek Oberoi, Bipasha Basu (special appearance), Naseeruddin Shah, Deepak Dobriyal, Pankaj Tripathi, Kamal Tiwari etc. The Censor Board certified the film for Adult viewing (A).
In ‘Omkara’ (2006), Vilash Bhardwaj molded the story of ‘Othello’ (1603) with the rural backdrop of Uttar Pradesh where ‘Bahubalis’ played prominent role in the politics. A comparison of main characters in ‘Othello’ with that in the film, ‘Omkara’ (2006) is presented in a tabular format below:
In Othello | In Omkara | Remarks |
---|---|---|
Othello is a dark-skinned Commander of the Venetian army in Venice. | Omi Shukla or Omkara (Ajay Devgan), the head of a criminal gang is the son of a Brahmin father and low-caste mother. | In both ‘Othello’ and ‘Omkara’, the race/caste is not the main reason for tragedy. It is the jealousy and revenge for which race/caste is discreetly used for instigation against Othello/Omkara. |
Iago, a soldier, and Othello’s trusted adviser. | Ishwar ‘Langda’ Tyagi (Saif Ali Khan), a henchman of Omkara. | In ‘Othello’ Iago kills his wife, Emilia while in ‘Omkara’ Indu kills her husband, Langda. |
Desdemona, the white-skinned wife of Othello who abducted her. | Dolly Mishra (Kareena Kapoor), the high caste fair-skin wife of Omkara who was abducted by him from the wedding venue. | – |
Cassio, Othello’s white-skinned lieutenant in the army. | Keshav ‘Kesu Firangi’ Upadhayay (Vivek Oberoi), the trusted and a fair-skinned handsome aid of Omkara. | The reason for appointing Cassio as lieutenant is because of his courage while Kesu’s promotion as Bahubali is mainly because of his charming nature and vote drawing ability from the younger generation. |
Emilia, wife of Iago and Attendant to Desdemona. | Indu Tyagi (Konkana Sen Sharma), wife of Langda and so-called sister of Omkara is a close companion of Dolly Mishra. | By making Indu, the so-called sister of Omkara, her character is more powerful in ‘Omkara’ than Emilia in ‘Othello’. |
Roderigo, the lover of Desdemona. | Rajju (Deepak Dobriyal), the bridegroom who was to marry Dolly. | Rajju thinks that Langda will help him get back Dolly. But Langda is actually using him in his plan to take revenge against both Omkara and Kesu. |
Brabantio, a senator of Venice and the father of Desdemona. | Raghunath Mishra (Kamal Tiwari), a lawyer and the father of Dolly. | – |
Duke of Venice, the Administrator of Venice | Bhaisaheb (Naseeruddin Shah), a politician. | – |
Bianca, a courtesan in Venice. | Billo (Bipasha Basu), a dancer and the mistress of Kesu. | – |
Language used in the play is poetic. | Language used in the film is local dialect of Western UP. | In keeping with the setting of the story in rural UP. |
The gist of the film’s story is as under:
Omkara (Ajay Devgan) is the head of a criminal gang operating under the patronage of Bhaisahab (Naseeruddin Shah), a local politician. Langda Tyagi (Saif Ali Khan) and Kesu (Vivek Oberoi) are the close confidants of Omkara. The film opens with Langda attacking a marriage procession (baaraat). Dolly (Kareena Kapoor), the bride is kidnapped by Omkara before bridegroom, Rajju (Deepak Dobriyal) reaches the marriage venue.
Raghunath Mishra (Kamal Tiwari), Dolly’s father and a lawyer with his men rushes to Omkara’s house and asks him to handover his daughter. Omkara, however, claims that Dolly chose him rather than Rajju. The matter goes to Bhaisahab where Dolly tell her father that she willingly eloped with Omkara. Raghunath Mishra feels betrayed by his daughter and leaves by telling Omkara that a daughter who betrays her father can betray him also. Dolly stays with Omkara.
In an election, Bhaisahab is a candidate. Omkara’s gang arranges a video of a sex scandal of Bhaisaheb’s political opponent resulting in his reputation getting tarnished. Bhaisaheb wins the election. In token of his appreciation, Bhaisaheb selects Omkara as a candidate for a local election. In order to canvas for his election, Omkara makes Kesu as his Bahubali over the claim of Langda who is senior to him. This sows the seeds of anger and jealousy in Langda who secretly plans to get revenge on both Omkara and Kesu.
The gang celebrates the election victory with a nautanki performance by Billo (Bipasha Basu), the dancer who is the mistress of Kesu. Seeing this opportunity, Langda pressurises Kesu to drink and a drunk Kesu gets instigated by the cigarette smoke emanating from Rajju’s mouth affecting Billo. A brawl between Kesu and Rajju takes place injuring Kesu. The matter goes to Omkara who is enraged by Kesu’s behaviour. Omkara punishes Kesu by sidelining him from important assignments.
To restore his position in the gang, Kesu approaches Langda for a way out. He suggests to Kesu to approach Dolly who can plead with Omkara to pardon him. Dolly agrees to put a word to Omkara provided he teaches her an English song. Kesu starts visiting Dolly and spends time with her for rehearsing an English song. Once, Omkara sees Kesu coming out of Dolly’s room and asks Langda about this. Langda, using this opportunity create suspicion in the mind of Omkara suggesting an affair between Kesu and Dolly. As a proof, a ‘kamarbandh’ jewellery gifted by Omkara to Dolly is found with Billo which was given to her by Kesu. In fact this was clandestinely managed by Langda through Indu. Suspicion overtakes rationale in the minds of Omkara. He assigns Langda to kill Kesu.
On the first night of his marriage, Omkara confronts Dolly of her ‘infidelity.’ In uncontrolled anger, he kills Dolly by suffocating her with a pillow. Indu enters the room and see the dead body of Dolly when she finds kamarbandh jewellery. She admits that she has taken it from Dolly’s room and handed it over to Langda. A realization comes to their minds that Langda has given it to Kesu to create the suspicion in the mind of Omkara. Angered by Langda’s conspiracy, Indu slashes Langda’s throat with a sickle resulting in his death. A seriously injured Kesu returns when he watches Omkara killing himself with his revolver out of guilt.
The film had 5 songs written by Gulzar and set to music by Vishal Bhardwaj. I present the first song ‘beedi jalaile jigar se piya’ to appear on the Blog. The song is picturised on Bipasha Basu, Saif Ali Khan, Vivek Oberoi, and Deepak Dobriyal with a large crowd. It is a nautanki song in celebration of the election win. The song is choreographed by Ganesh Acharya. The song starts with a prelude of scat (wordless vocables) singing by Sunidhi Chauhan and Sukhwinder Singh.
I have watched the video clip of the songs many times since the release of the film. I thought the song to be an item number. When I watched the full film, I realised that this song was an essential part of the film. Gulzar saab’s lyrics are raunchy which is understandable as it is for a nautanki song.
Gulzar Saab, at the launch of the music album of the film, had said that his lyrics of the song reflected the feudal system that prevailed in UP. When I started interpreting the song with Gulzar Saab’s statement, the line, ‘dhuaan na nikaari o lab se piya ye duniya badi jhaag hai’ I felt as if a serf (or a peasant) telling his other colleagues to keep their mouth shut in front of a powerful feudal lord. Similarly, the line in the song ‘na kasoor, na fatoor bina zuram ke hazoor mar gaye’ apart from the raunchiness, also give the impression of a powerful feudal lord sitting in front of a pleading serf. Likewise, the line in the song, ‘aisa kaate ke daant kaa nisaan chhod de’ though sounds erotic, it can also be visualised with a feudal lord sitting with his German Shepherd dog who let loose his dog to bite a serf as a part of the punishment. Such thing used to happen under zamindari system.
I do not know whether Gulzar had considered in his lyrics feelings of Langda after he was overlooked by Omkara for promotion as Bahubali in favour of Kesu. But at some places in the song, lyrics give such an impression. For instance, the line ‘naa kasoor naa fatoor bina zuram ke hazoor mar gaye’ gives an inner feeling of Langda that he has been denied promotion by huzoor (in this case, Omkara) without his fault.
As per the audio album, the song under discussion is rendered by Sukhwinder Singh, Sunidhi Chauhan, Nachiketa Chakraborty and Clinton Carejo. However, I did not find the voice of Clinton Carejo in the song. Probably, he may have rendered some occasional chants in the background of the song and also a line or two in the prelude. The chanting by the crowd in western concerts is mainly by the fans of the performers. Vishal Bhardwaj has added this element in this nautanki song to give such a feel.
The raunchy lyrics with Urdu and local dialects, the bawdy dances, the elements of folk music in orchestration, the chants in the background from the crowd and the lighting effects give a feel of a real nautanki performance in a rural setting in modern India.
This song also represents as to how far the nautanki folk music has progressed from the harmonium, sarangi/clarinet, dholak with sitting crowd under petromax light as in paan khaaye sainyya hamaaro in ‘Teesri Kasam’ (1966) to the digital music with chanting by the standing crowd under electric lights.

Hullo Atuldom
I am sitting to write a post to wish my favourite singer on turning an year older. The task is not easy. Because the blog has 2967 songs, from a possible 7874, leaving us with 4907 songs to choose from. So, the difficulty is of one-too-many to choose from. The task is further complicated when I have zeroed in on atleast 10 songs in the last few hours. I want to write about each and everyone of them.
The song that first came to my mind is from the 27th April 2001 released, Ram Gopal Verma produced and Rajat Mukherjee written & directed “Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya” (PTKK). It had Urmila Matondkar play a possessive, headstrong, young woman (Ria) and daughter of Suresh Oberoi- a businessman who is concerned about his daughter’s nature. Fardeen Khan played a married fashion photographer (Jai) and Sonali Kulkarni played Jai’s wife. Jai sees Ria in Goa and convinces her to model for his fashion magazine and she also falls in love with him. She is shocked to find his marital status when she visits his house and that he is happily married man.
In her obsession to be with Jai and marry him she tries various methods to disrupt his family life like attempting suicide & calling him to be by her side; creating a situation whereby his wife finds them getting intimate etc. She goes to the extent of even trying to murder the wife but Jai reaches in the nick of time, saves his wife and shows the father his daughter’s mental condition. The film closes with Ria in hospital and Jai feeling guilty for her condition. Urmila Matondkar walked away with a lot of praise for her acting.
PTKK had music by Sandeep Chowta who has been in the film industry since 1996 having made his debut in Telugu films. The lyricist for PTKK was Nitin Raikwar and the playback singers used were K.S. Chitra, Alka Yagnik, Sonu Nigam, Kavitha Krishnamurthy, Alisha Chinai, Sukhwinder Singh etc & our today’s birthday personality- Asha Bhonsle.
She had only one song in the movie but it was very popular back then and the choreography and picturization was classy.
I don’t think we have anything to write about the legend that Ashatai is other than that she kept reinventing herself through the 74 years that she has been in public eye.
The last film with a song sung by AshaTai came in 2020 in a movie called “Bhangra Paa Le”. She has sung for a few mother-daughter actresses like Tanuja and Kajol (there will be many more which the readers will recall).
She has sung songs under fathers and sons like SD Burman- RD Burman, Roshan- Rajesh Roshan and many more.
Sung with Kishore Kumar and his son Amit Kumar, Mukesh and his son Nitin Mukesh.
She has seen song recording style down the decades and has managed to mould herself accordingly.
I can go on & on about Ashatai’s versatility and control over her voice which she modulates according to the on-screen artist. I can list out all the languages that she has sung in. I can write about all the international artists that she has cut albums with over the years. I can write about how I was excited to see her in person at concerts in Bangalore. But let us get on to the song where Sonu Nigam and Sukhwinder Singh accompany her.
Wishing the darling of all Film Music lovers (across the world) a Very Happy Birthday. May she have Good Health and Cheer.

A. R. Rehman – The musician of 21st century – 2
————————————————————–
64th Birthday of Kavita Krishnamurthy
——————————————————————
Once upon a time, in our office, the crowd was more interfering in each other’s lives. There would be judgmental comments about each other, if someone works very hard, there was gossip about them. If someone is not very hard working there would be gossip and snide comments about them. 90’s and early 2000’s was a time when all had more time to bother about other people. Interference is one way to look at it. We were in one corner of Mumbai, and there were very few people who travelled long distances to arrive, and most of us were from nearby areas. There was less of anonymity or disregard of big city atmosphere. Come to think of it, most of us used to think of the office as a second home. As the working day would be full of work, talking to people and friends. We were more open to all sort of talk, discussions and even gossip. The office building would be like a small village, where everyone knew everything about everyone. That was an atmosphere, where, every new day was a new beginning. And come weekend, we would be full of plans for the next week. On Monday, we will do this or start on that work.
I don’t know, it feels as if things have gradually changed over the decades. Now every Friday, most of us actually feel joy that there will be no office for 2 days. Long weekend is more joyous, we all wish each other happy weekend. Whereas earlier it was, ‘see you on Monday’.
There was no A.C. in the office, nor fancy blinds or fancy name plates on the cabins, not much eating out and very few snack parties. But those were the happier days. Today, I have more money to spend, more authority to assert, freer to shop what ever the sales persons bring to sell, more snacks and lunch to order from outside eateries, as the office canteen is still is very bad. But the comradery of old days is absent. For sure, not all is ingenuine, but still the happiness quotient is gone. Or maybe I am simply bored.
Yeah, change is a part of life. Colleagues and friends of the older generation have all retired. Some of the dear friends have moved away, or transferred to different places. One corner of Mumbai has begun to feel and behave like a city. I am ready to admit, that I may have also changed. As we mature, it brings a certain discretion, in how we deal with new people. What was working and meeting with other people, has now become more of a dealing with people. Or having learnt from so many experiences, I have learnt to have superficial contact with people. I thought being superficial is just not my nature. But recently, I am introspecting, that maybe I have become like everyone else. Not a good sight.
I have seen some people in my life, and every time I have resolved, never to be like them. Some times we encounter people with really ugly mindset. I have a friend, who would always be looking for excuses, why certain person behaves like that, or has such type of manner. For a longish time, I also tried to look the other way, whenever such ugliness showed its face. I became so adept at ignoring things, that it would take a new person coming into the set up and that person would show me with examples, that such and such things are happening and I am not even aware. So, this was actually a sort of tuning out, from the atmosphere, so the bad things are totally ignored.
The reason I went into the flashback and into those good old days is the song from the film ‘Taal’. In early 2000’s we used to have lot of extra curricular activities in the office. One of the favourite events was ‘antakshari’. In one of those competitions, I had my friend as my partner. This one was a serious competition, very serious with all the contestants very keen to win. The hosts had done lot of hard work, to prepare for the tough rounds. One such tough rounds were picking up chits of a set of words, and recognize the song, which I found to be very easy. We did very well in that round. We did well in the round for recognizing the mukhda from the stanza also. Then there was the round of ‘dumb-charade’ where the chit was for movie name. My partner, picked up the chit and it was ‘Taal’. She made the suitable ‘Taal’ action and I knew the name. But unfortunately, I could not sing any song, none would come to mind. Both me and my friend were repeating ‘taal se taal milaa’, but that is not mukhda. So, we lost those crucial points, despite recognizing so many of the songs in stanza/mukhda round and the ‘set of word’ round, we finished second.
The movie ‘Taal’ was produced and directed by Subhash Ghai, who celebrated his birthday on 24/01/2022. Now it is the birthday of Kavita krishnamurthy today, so the second version is by Kavita Krishnamurthy and Sukhwendra Singh with Chorus. First version is actually a group song, which has Sonu Nigam with ARR, Anuradha Sriram, and Sujata Mohan. This song has long been in the list of Sonu Nigam songs, which I want to post. No better occasion, then Kavita Krishnamurthy’s birthday and post no. two of series on ARR. The Kavita Krishnamurthy version is listed as a separate song actually, but the same mukhda of first version is part of this song too, so it is a version song. The songs are picturized on Aishwarya Rai, Anil Kapoor and Akshaye Khanna.
Those were cable TV days, so I have seen this movie on cable TV. Some Sundays were spent watching movies on cable TV, 2-5 and then 6-9 shows. They would show the newer movies at 11-2 also sometimes. Like all Subash Ghai movies, this was also a musical, teaming up with ARR for the first time, who teamed up with Anand Bakshi as lyricist for the first time. I find this score of a purely hindi film much more attractive then, the dubbed songs in Mani Ratnam films.
More on ARR in coming posts, so we can listen to this wonderful sufiana/situational song.

55th birthday of A. R. Rehman
———————————————————–
A. R. Rehman – The musician of 21st century – 1
———————————————————–
Out beyond ideas of wrong doing and right doing, there is a field. I will meet you there. – Rumi
Some years ago, I received a Whatsapp forward featuring a sketch with Rumi’s character, in a 21st century setting. This requires careful description, so you all please be patient with me.
There he was, 13th century persian poet and philosopher, Jalaludding Rumi, turban and all, sitting on one end of a small primitive boat. A boat that fits in a New York apartment’s living room. Guess who is doing the honors of ‘Chappu chalauing’ at the other end of the boat? It was Chandler, of ‘Friends’ fame. Imagine a boat on the floor of a city living room, at one end Chandler is roving the boat and Rumi is sitting on the other end. The caption with it, also in 21st century English, read “When you are looking for a Roomie and misspell it!”
Ha Ha Ha Ha. If no one is laughing, I have only myself to blame for thinking of Rumi. “ham wahan hain jahan se ham ko bhi kuchh hamaari khabar nahi aati”
I have been exposed to some episodes of ‘Friends’, so identifying Chandler was the easy bit in the caricature. I could connect, the word “Roomie” to Rumi after some deliberation, but never having seen Rumi, or his picture or sketch, I was wondering who is the peasant in the boat. And what is a boat doing in the living room? It transpired that Rumi had arrived in his boat in response to the ad posted by Chandler for a roomie, as he misspelt it as Rumi. Since in Rumi’s time the preferred mode of transport was a boat, Persia is sure to have been full of rivers. Or canals, like Venice.
But I quite liked the idea of a boat in the living room. I did contemplate, on a real-life boat, the size of a two-three seater sofa, which was available for sale in a handicraft shop in Alleppy, Kerela. I could not figure out a way of transporting it to Mumbai, so had to drop the idea. I have a few embellished display size boats, but it is not the same. Now, after writing all this, I am thinking I should make another attempt at it.
At least a boat is doable, but imagine if someone is fond of trains, how will they get them in the living room. Trains are good for travelling, they take you from Point A to Point B, that is their usefulness. I have seen a train on the dining table with tracks and all, for movement of serving dishes, somewhere in a museum, probably. Now that is nice idea, if the kitchen is next of the dining section, a train can be made and for variety, a tunnel or two can added in the landscape. My imagination is running away with me.
I have finally arrived at the destination point, i. e. a train song. An iconic song for our generation of movie goers. A sufiana song written by Gulzar and composed by A. R. Rehman for Dil Se(1998). Singers are Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi. There is a lot of trivia available here about this song. There is this page too, which states that this song and video was at 9th position in the poll for top 10 all time songs, for which people from 55 countries voted. This poll was conducted by BBC world service.
The original composition of a solo by Sukhwinder Singh titled “Thaiyya thaiya” is also part of the movie’s song track, though it was not used in the film. The song begin with the lines “Eid aayi mera yaar nayi aaya”, but it is actually based on Bulle Shah’s “Tere ishq nachaya kar thhaiya thhaiya”. The version is mostly in Punjabi, with the same tune. So, I thought maybe that should be treated as a separate song.
These films songs are among the best of A. R. Rehman, Gulzar and Lata Mangeshkar. And they will be the best of Udit Narayan & Mahalaxmi Iyer(Aye Ajnabi), Sonu Nigam & Kavita Krishnamurthy(tu hi tu satragi re), Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awasthi(Chhaiyya chhaiyya).
The song becomes iconic due to its picturization of a group of dancers, with Shah Rukh Khan and Malaika Arora, dancing atop a running train. It is shot in location of Ooty. This is also the best of Farah Khan’s choreography. This is among the first few outdoorsy songs I shortlisted for posting in the blog.
Gulzar sahab is talking of ‘Jannat’ and ‘Firdaus’, which means Paradise. ‘Gulposh is invisible, kaayenaat is universe, Taaveez is talisman, ‘aayat’ is sentence/verse(scholars say ‘aayat’ in the quranic context are niether sentence nor verse, it is an entirely different unit of deliverance) of Al-Quran which are in Arabic. What Gulzar sahab may mean in this line ‘mera naghma wahi mera kalma wahi’, is that ishq as a philosophy is my song, my first and last word.
wo yaar hai jo khushboo ki tarah
jis ki zubaan urdu ki tarah
The first thought the word ‘Urdu’ invokes in the minds of Urdudaan as well as non-urdudaan, is its sweetness (Shireen) and cultured-ness(muhazzib). These two things ‘shireeni’ and ‘tehzeeb’ go hand in hand and are two sides of the same coin. This literally means, the object of ishq is anything that has flagrant aura and talks speaks and sings with a sweetness. Fragrance is a thing which is also pure, clean and invisible. Sincerity and unpretentiousness, plus a sweet way of conduct and speech is:
Meri shaam raat
Meri kaayenaat
Shaam is a time of relaxation and liesure and raat is for resting. ‘Kaayenaat’ is my ‘universe of abundance’. So there goes, if the object of my ishq is, the highest ideals of sincerity and good conduct, then it will be my contentment and happiness for which sky in the limit. Is this the salvation and moksh in this life?
Saare ishq ki chhaaon chale chhainyya chhainya
Paaon jannat chale chale chal chhainyya chhainyya
And
Jin ke sar ho ishq ki chhaaon
Paaon ke neeche jannat hogi
They both mean the same, that those who live under the shade of such an ishq, heaven/paradise is theirs.
Remembering Jalaluddin Rumi and his philosophy is eventually justified by Gulzar sahab’s this master piece. Maybe the quote is the wrong one, the correct one is this:
“There is no salvation for the soul but to fall in love. Only lovers can escape out of these two worlds.” – Rumi
I have been thinking for sometime now that there so many iconic songs composed by ARR, that a garland or a necklace of these gems can be made. So I have chosen myself to do this series. The first episode is this song, starting on the birthday of ARR. I have done a few posts of his songs in the blog earlier for songs of ‘lagan’ ‘zubieda’ ‘sapney’ etc. This is by far an ambitious series for me to undertake, as it is very difficult to fit theses gems in a particular form to complete a cohesive design of the necklace. I will play by the ear, and God willing try to complete this series in 2022.

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Taal’ which was released in ‘1999’.
I was staying at Bareilly (1998-2004) at that time. I remember to have watched this movie with my family and enjoyed it a lot. I liked it so much that I watched this movie twice. First time with my office colleague and second time with my family. I liked this movie and specially its music too. As was usual for a Subhash Ghai movie, this movie too had a good music scored by A.R. Rehman (who was collaborating with Subhash Ghai for the first time).
‘Taal-1999’ was Subhash Ghai’s home production and it was distributed under his company ‘Mukta Arts’ and ‘Tips International’.
Subhash Ghai was the producer and director of this movie. He co-authored writing with Javed Siddiqui (dialogues), and in writing screenplay with Sachin Bhowmick.
Story of this movie was written by Subhash Ghai.
The star-cast of this movie included Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya Roy, Akshay Khanna, Amrish Puri, Alok Nath, Jividha Ashta, Mita Vashisht, Saurabh Shukla, Supriya Karnik, Prithvi Zutshi, Manoj Pahwa, Rajesh Khera, Bobby Darling, and many others.
This movie had twelve soundtracks including ten songs and two instrumental tracks. Lyrics for this movie were written by Anand Bakshi and music was composed by A.R. Rehman.
The music of this movie was well appreciated and successful.
Today’s song is sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Alka Yagnik. On screen Alok Nath lip-syncs in Sukhwinder Singh’s voice and Aishwarya Roy lip syncs in Alka Yagnik’s voice.
10th July 2021 was the sixty-fifth birthday of actor Alok Nath (born on 10th July’1956). We all know him as an established character actor and the various roles he had enacted in the Hindi movies. He made his film debut with 1982 English movie “Gandhi” directed by Richard Attenborough. Later on, he went to act in many ‘TV Soaps’ and Hindi movies. His notable works came in Rajshri Productions’ ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya-1989’, ‘Ham Aapke Hain Kaun-1994’ and ‘Ham Saath Saath Hain-1999’.
On this blog we belatedly wish Alok Nath a very happy birth anniversary and a healthy and peaceful life ahead.
To mark this occasion, we listen to today’s song.
But before that, we also wish the singer of today’s song i.e., Sukhwinder Singh a very happy birthday on 18th July.
Sukhwinder Singh was born on 18th July’1971 (18.07.2021 will be his fiftieth birthday). He belongs to Amritsar Punjab. He started his musical career by releasing a Pop song album in Punjabi. Later on, he joined Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s troupe and also got an opportunity to sing under them for the movie ‘Khilaaf-1991’. He went on singing in some other movies which got unnoticed till he sung the song ‘Chhaiyya Chhaiyya’ in the 1998 movie ‘Dil-Se’. That also brough him his first ‘Filmfare Award’.
After ‘Chhaiyya Chhaiyya’ he became a household name. And with ‘Jai-Ho’ in the 2008 movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ Sukhwinder Singh got an international acclaim. He has also sung in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and Urdu languages other than Hindi and Punjabi language.
Let us now enjoy today’s wonderful song composed by A.R. Rehman from the movie ‘Taal-1999’.
As mentioned above today’s song is sung by Sukhwinder Singh and Alka Yagnik. Lyrics are by Anand Bakshi and music is composed by A.R. Rehman.
With today’s song the movie ‘Taal-1999’ makes its debut on the blog.
Over to the song now …

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 10
——————————————————————————
Welcome all to the today’s post where I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Saudaagar-1991’. This is one of the two movies falling under ‘Blog Ten-Year challenge’ today. Another movie is ‘Sunahri Naagin-1963’.
Only two songs (better strike rate than the current ‘one song per day’😊) were posted on the blog on this day ten years back i.e. on 14.03.2010;
Song | Movie title-Year | Remarks |
---|---|---|
Ilu Ilu | Saudaagar-1991 | 02 of 06 songs posted |
Tu hi tu hai main dekhaa karoon | Sunahri Naagin-1963 | 05 of 08 songs posted |
‘Saudaagar-1991’ is one of the many movies that I watched during my stay at Kota. I remember I watched this movie twice during its initial release. Later I have always enjoyed it in ‘parts’ whenever it was on TV channels. The main reason for watching the movie was that it was directed by Subhash Ghai (he was the producer as well) and secondly its ‘music’.
I am big fan of Subhash Ghai , not only for his direction but for the music of his movies as well.
Music has always been a ‘highlight’ of the movies directed by him and also the picturization of the song sequences in his movies which are choreographed in ‘style’.
I still remember watching ‘Ram Lakhan-1989’, ‘Saudaagar-1991’ and ‘Khalnayak-1993’ to packed houses in Kota and the audience breaking into cheers and dancing to the tunes of ‘My name is Lakhan’, ‘Ilu Ilu’, ‘Imli ka boota beri ka ped’, and other songs in ‘Ram Lakhan-1989’ and ‘Saudaagar-1991’.
Also, I cannot forget the ‘mesmerising silence’ watching the ‘artistically choreographed’ ‘Choli ke peechhe kya hai’ and the ‘picturesque beauty’ in the song ‘Paalki mein ho ke sawaar chali re’… from ‘Khalnaayak-1993’.
His collaboration with the music-duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal started with the ‘1979’ movie ‘Gautam Govinda’ and lasted till ‘Khalnayak-1993’.
Let us have a look on the list of movies where Laxmikant-Pyarelal scored the music for the movies directed by Subhash Ghai;
SNo | Movie Title | Year |
---|---|---|
01 | Gautam Govinda | 1979 |
02 | Karz | 1980 |
03 | Krodhi | 1981 |
04 | Hero | 1983 |
06 | Meri Jung | 1985 |
07 | Karma | 1986 |
08 | Ram Lakhan | 1989 |
09 | Saudaagar | 1991 |
10 | Khalnaayak | 1993 |
Today’s song from ‘1991’ movie ‘Saudaagar’ is picturized on the then debutant pair Manisha Koirala and Vivek Mushran. Also present in the picturization of the song is Anupam Kher who played a ‘pivotal’ role in the movie.
The song is sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy, Manhar Udhas and Sukhvinder Singh. Lyrics are by Anand Bakshi and music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
Two songs from ‘Saudaagar-1991’ posted on the blog earlier are as follows;

Mitwa – 1
sun mere bandhu re…..
sun mere mitwaa….
sun mere saathhi re….
The Poet i.e. Majrooh further says:
hotaa tu peepal,
main hoti amar lataa teri
hotaa tu peepal,
main hoti amar lataa teri
tere galey maalaa ban ke,
padi muskaati re
sun mere saathi re
sun mere bandhu re,
sun mere mitwaa
sun mere saathi re
The reference to peepal tree in the song is taking me to another memory of a long time ago. The movie ‘Naseem’ seen a long time ago on TV. I have looked up the info on this film on imdb (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0241753/?ref_=nv_sr_1?ref_=nv_sr_1).
It’s a movie alternately named ‘The Morning Breeze’. Kaifi Azmi played the grandfather of the central pratogoist Naseem in the film and there is a dialogue uttered by him , which goes : “Hamaare ghar ke aangan mein ek bahut puraana peepal ka ped thha.”
This in turn is reminds of my own paternal grandfather, who was a staunch Gandhian and a Satyagrahi. One of the lakhs of foot soldiers whose names do not appear in the list of those who fought for the independence of India. He was participant in the Swadeshi movement and the Quit India Movement, in the tiny village in Belgaum District. It is said the police came to the village looking for him, but his mother hid him in the sacks of food grains and thus he escaped arrest. His name is ‘Meeran Saheb’ in the traditional way, people were named in that by gone era. He was an avid reader of newspapers and lived in his own world, if he could help it. Lived an idealistic and minimalistic life in the era of idealism with resources, available only to the extent of one’s needs for survival. Wore only white Khadi Kurta-eezar with Gandhi topi, till the day he died. It was his daily attire, be it someone’s wedding or Eid or whatever celebration or occasion. New clothes a must for Eid, normally he made do with 2-3 sets of clothes. His life’s priorities were simple, news on radio and newspapers of Urdu, Marathi and Kannada. My ‘Dada’ was not the only one to wear khadi as an uniform, there were others, his peers mostly who wore only white Khadi .
Another thing, I am more like my grandfather than anybody else. It has been a decade or two, since anyone has called me “Meeran Saheb”, (the whole family and relatives on my mothers side used to call me that) but the memory is more pleasant now than it felt at that time 🙂 .
We are living in the times which are also good in some ways and bad in some ways. There has never been a utopian era. It exists in dreams and books of the visionaries. There may be rare examples of near perfect society with peace, justice and prosperity existing in recorded history. So we make the best of what we have and survive with our self-respect intact, the head held high and the values of humanity held close to the heart. And what of hope? Hope is always there and dreams are never in short supply. One needs to keep faith and prayer on the lips for the Providence, who provides for one and all.
Ah…… here is the concept of providence. Providence is the source of all that the creation needs and gets. I did say in the comments of a post “Karta Hai Ek Raavi Ye Dilsooz e Bayaan“, that I will try and explain the concept of ‘Ni’amat’ and ‘Barakah’.
Niamat for me is the belief system of Islam, i.e. Imaan, higher level of Imaan is Taqwa. It is the belief in Allah (SWT – Subhanahu Wa Ta-A’la meaning All Praises For Him), his Prophets (PBUT – Peace Be Upon Them), his revelations and the day of Judgement i.e. Aakhirah. It is a niamat that we have the ability to see, to hear and to speak. The ability to breath and live. The elements of nature like air, water and food which are life’s substance. ‘Niamat‘ is also the word of Allah – his revelations in the form of aayats of the Quraan), sent down as guidance and warning. Also that Allah (SWT) has promised to preserve his revelations i.e. the Quraan for mankind till the end of time.
‘Barakah‘ or ‘Barkat’ is that Allah (SWT) keeps providing for us these life substances, provides for all the universe, even for the smallest / minutest life forms to the giant creatures. He keeps forgiving us and accepting our prayers. Listens to them and grants our wishes whatever is best for us. For he knows what is best for us, we do not know. He is the one who gave us the wisdom to be ‘saabir‘ (Patient) and ‘shaakir’ (thankful). ‘Barakah‘ is again that the Almighty has given us pious parents and spouse and granted us children, with joy and contentment in life. It is simple that if we learn to be ‘saabir and shaakir’ we will be content with our lot and life will be full of joy. ‘Barkah’ is also increase of health, wealth and happiness. It’s a blessing from the Almighty that we have the ability to understand all this and life’s philosophy. It is also the ability to give and to share. The maturity to understand and accept that whatever worldly wealth, name, fame we have is given by the Almighty Allah and it is not ours, but we are the custodians. He gives it in our custody so that we share the bountiful of worldly goods, this includes knowledge, among fellow beings. It’s like a distribution chain.
Charity, I believe is nothing but the justification of our being blessed with health and wealth, in fact all ‘niamat‘ and ‘barakat‘. Some are blessed more and others are blessed less (with health, wealth etc. in material terms). For both the types of people the blessings bestowed by God Almighty are a test, no less. How they treat these blessings, how they react, and how they relate all this to the Almighty. How thankful and grateful they are for these blessings.
From him, Allah (swt) we came and to him we shall return. We take with us only our deeds. Here we come to good deeds and bad deeds. What is to be remembered here again our deeds are what we do, how we treat our fellow beings in the world and how we behave in the world and what we cause as a result of our conduct, speech and behavior and deeds and how charitable or otherwise, we are. Essentially how much caring and sharing, we exercise in our life amount to our deeds here. Mostly we might see there is the system of use and abuse going on around us. We are part of the same system and involved in the same type of deeds. But there is a thread of light all around us which shows the path of good, right and peace and justice. If we go forward looking for good than we will find only goodness.
It’s a ‘Niamat‘ and ‘Barakah‘ that we have a belief in the ‘Day of Judgment’ too, all things considered. Day of Judgement is when all our good deeds and bad deeds will be considered, and Allah (SWT) will grant us ‘Heaven / Paradise’ or “Hell Fire”. If humanity has this belief that we are answerable for all our deeds to a superior power, than this will stop it from committing all crimes and bad deeds, from smallest of bad deeds, like hurting someone with bad words, even.
See ! He is giving us, guidance, showing us the way of a pious, clean, spiritual and just life, promising to preserve this book for us till the end of time, promising us rewards for the good deeds that we are able to amass, because of his naimat and barakah, in the hereafter. So , which of the blessings, gifts and favours given by our Lord and Master, are we going to deny ?
May Allah (SWT) grant us with the Baraakah for believing in the essential goodness of human nature.
This song from “Lagaan’ is a special one. The song’s title is ‘Mitwa’, and every time I am looking for a celebratory song, this keeps coming to memory. It is all about hope and spirit to win and overcome the difficulties in life, with strength and aplomb. Javed Akhtar is the lyricist and AR Rehman is composer. It is a group song which became a speciality of AR Rehman. The singing voices are Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan, Sukhwinder Singh and Srinivas. This is one of my favourite songs by Udit Narayan, for the rally that he sang in the mukhdaa. There should be a category of ‘mitwaa‘ songs too, as there are many classic songs in the Golden era. I have one more ‘mitwa‘ song in my sights for writing a post. If I can find one more inspiring song in the category, will try to make a trilogy of posts on ‘Mitwaa”.
Meanwhile, the holy month of ‘Ramadhan’ has ended, with ‘Eid-ul-fitr’ also come and gone, I take this opportunity to wish everyone Eid Mubarak, belatedly. May Allah (SWT) grant your wishes and answer your prayers.

Today we remember the great son this soil Sardar Bhagat Singh (28th September 1907 – 23rd March 1931), on his birth anniversary.
We remember him for his bravery, courage, determination and supreme sacrifice made for a cause of the people, the people of this country.
He laid down his life at a young age of only 23 years, 5 months, and 25 days. He could have surrendered to the British and chosen a leisurely life enjoying the benefits and luxuries showered by the Britishers on him, had he requested to forgive him as proposed by them. However instead of choosing ‘the life of slavery’ he chose to dedicate his life for the ‘noblest cause – the freedom of his Motherland’ from the Britishers.
He will remain the inspiration for many as long as humanity exists and people read about him and realize what Bhagat Singh was and how great was he to have done so much in one single life of only 23 years.
I have earlier presented my thoughts while presenting the songs ‘Pagdi Sambhaal Jatta’ and ‘Vekho Loko Khidan To Pehlon’. Whatever will be written about him to remember him and his thoughts, is very less in comparison to the legacy he has left for us. And I am sure as the coming generations read about him will find his thoughts still relevant in terms of what his dreams of ‘true freedom’ for India was and what we have achieved after getting our ‘freedom’ – and they will find that yes, we have still miles to go to build this nation in the pursuit of those dreams.
As I have mentioned earlier in my posts the year 2002 was a special year as in that year there were as many as three movies released on the life of Bhagat Singh.
- 23rd March 1931 Shaheed
- The Legend Of Bhagat Singh
- Shaheed-E-Azam
While “23rd March 1931 Shaheed” and “The Legend Of Bhagat Singh” were released on the same date the other movie “Shaheed-E-Azam” was delayed and was released at a later date.
I will not go into which one amongst them was better than the other. The important thing is that they were made on the life of Bhagat Singh and to make people aware of his true story (may be with a little or more filmy touch).
Today I present a song from the Rajkumar Santoshi directed ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh-2002’. This movie was produced by Kumar Taurani and Ramesh Taurani (of TIPS). It had the star cast of Ajay Devgan, Sushant Singh, D. Santosh, Akhilendra Mihsra, Raj Babbar, Farida Jalal, Amrita Rao, Mukesh Tiwari, Surendra Rajan, Saurabh Dubey, Kenny Desai, Sitaram Panchal, Bhaskar Chatterjee, Sunil Grover and others.
The screenplay was written by Rajkumar Santoshi, Piyush Mishra and Anjum Rajabali. It was edited by VN Mayekar. Songs for this movie were penned by Sameer and music was composed by AR Rehman.
All songs of this movie composed by AR Rehman are very very good and I liked them as they fill us with patriotic fervour and with a poignant touch, yet making us thoughtful on the life and times of the martyrs and their feelings for their motherland.
Today’s song is in two parts and is sung by AR Rehman and Sukhwinder Singh.
Let us listen to this wonderful song now …

ASAD 10th Anniversary Celebrations – 1
———————————————————————
I have not been active either on the blog, or on whatsapp groups for quite a while now. Earlier this year I developed a health issue and had to go through a surgical procedure. Things are fine now though 🙂 . Catching up on all the work pending for the last few months.
Let me now get to the post that I would like to contribute.
10 years, that is a decade. . . the “BIG X”. What a journey this has been! Still remember how one fine day, by sheer accident, I stumbled upon this amazing blog, and made my way to the first post that was made – the song “Miley Na Phool Toh Kaanton Se Dosti Kar Li” by Rafi sahab for the film ‘Anokhi Raat’ (1968), starring Parikshit Sahni. Then the next song if I remember correctly was “Tum Agar Mujhko Na Chaaho Toh Koi Baat Nahi” by Mukesh Sahab for the movie ‘Dil Hi To Hai’ (1963), sung on screen by Raj Kapoor and he sings it to the cute and gorgeous Nutan 🙂 .
One of my favourite bosses always used to tell us – there is one thing I find is the secret of being sane and that is to have a ROUTINE! He says, that it does not matter if you have your highs or your lows in life, never give up on your routine. If you have to walk in the morning, do that, come what may. If you have lunch at a particular time, do that regularly. Somehow with time, and how our priorities change, we give up on what once used to a routine / habit for us. But few people who we can get inspired by for being so committed and never gave up on their routine and dedication to the blog are Atul ji, Sudhir ji, Arunkumar ji, Bharat ji and the entire group of Atulites. What they have managed to do in these 10 years is more than monumental. This is going to be a treasure trove for generations to come. All this was not because it was a great startup idea or there was a motive behind it, it was just for sheer love of old hindi music and as Atul ji likes to call it ‘Labour of Love’.
I wish in the near future I am able to get back to my old routine and be more active on the blog (it does need a mention, that in spite of me being inactive, I have always been kept in the loop with emails, thank you Atulites). Have also spoken to Avinash ji, that Aparna, Avinash ji and I should get back to our Project YIPPEEEE!! (should get much more easy now with help from Sudhir ji).
To celebrate this wonderful milestone, I choose a very recent song, which I really like and also a song that my daughter plays in a loop every time she gets in the car 🙂 . The song is from the recently release movie ‘Sanju’, a movie on the life of actor Sanjay Dutt. The movie had mixed reactions and even I did feel that his life story was glorified, but what no one can refute is the fact that Ranbir Kapoor was a class act. He has portrayed Sanjay Dutt to the T, so much so that at some point of time into the movie, one forgets that he is Ranbir and start thinking he is Sanjay Dutt. The movie also makes one wonder how life would have been for the respected Sunil Dutt, having to lose his wife, Nargis to cancer and at the same time bring up a troubled child like Sanjay.
Coming to the song, it is a song that Sanjay Dutt imagines his mother egging him on to conquer anything. The song is titled “Kar Har Maidaan Fateh” and sung by one and only Sukhwinder Singh (his voice is a perfect fit for songs like these). And ably supported by another wonderful singer, Shreya Ghoshal. The tempo of the song is brilliant and it is like a shot in the arm and a morale booster to conquer any mountain.
Though 10 years is a big mountain that Team Atul have conquered, as Atul ji says, we have hardly scraped the surface, and there is a long journey to look forward to. Here is a BIG congratulation to Team Atul and wishing us all the very best for the next milestone round the corner 🙂 . So so blessed to be part of this journey 🙂 .

jab teri yeh zid aag hogi

baahon ki nishanon mein dhal ke
dhoondh lenge apna aashiaan

lamhon se aankh mila ke
rakh de jee jaan lada ke
tooti shamsheeron se hi ho oo oo
