Hullo Atuldom

19th June is the birthday of actor Raj Kiran. He will be 73 today.

Recently I saw Mahesh Bhatt’s ‘Arth’ (1982) and I thought such a good-looking person. He was playing the part of Raj who falls in love with the recently jilted Pooja (Shabana Azmi); that was an odd pairing. But they looked good together. Raj Kiran had made his debut in 1975 through BR Ishara’s ‘Kaagaz Ki Nao’ with Sarika as his co-star. His next release was ‘Shiksha’ (1978) which was directed by S Ramanathan. It was produced by Tarachand Barjatya – meaning Rajshri productions.

The movie had Urmila Bhatt and Iftekhar playing Raj’s parents. Beena Banerjee & Benjamin played villagers who lives are effected by Vijay Gupta’s (Raj Kiran) reckless driving. Vijay’s father is a strict person who feels that giving him a proper punishment for this recklessness will make his son a better person. So instead of bailing him out of the situation the father throws him out of the house. Vinay takes up a job as a driver at a rich man’s place (I think that was Pinchoo Kapoor) under a new name – Vinay & also doesn’t disclose his lineage. Vinay (a.k.a Vijay) also comes across the family that was effected by his recklessness, helps them in various ways so that they come to terms with and out of their misfortune. That was the simple story of ‘Shiksha’.

Bappi Lahiri was the music director of the songs in this movie which were written by Gauhar Kanpuri. I have seen the shoot of a part of the opening song of this film.

The music-part of the song before an antara was shot on the road out side the building which was my maayka. There was a lot of activity on our road on that day. Suddenly we saw a few shops spring up. Then we found the reason for all the activity as we saw large reflectors, and crowds build up. Now, there is a park opposite my building at Andheri where suddenly there were people sitting under huge beach-style umbrellas. I think that was the time of some holidays or vacation so we kids (all aged below 12) were allowed lots of time in the park by our parents. Then we saw a car drive up with a whole lot of men and ramming through the newly set up shops. Then the shops got reset and the same thing happened again. Sometime later, a person involved in all of this came up and rang the bell at my home asking for water, cold if possible. And my mom gave him a few bottles of water that is when she made inquiries about what the shoot was all about. I remember that she gathered info that it was a new boy who was playing the hero, and this is going to be part of the song. I don’t know if she recognized Jagdeep who was the only known face in the whole setup; maybe she would have if he was not in that funny wig.

If we see the video of the song this incident happens from 3:52, when the car is shown driving from under a flyover which is the Gokhale Bridge of Andheri West. The vehicle drives past Barucha Baug also known as Parsi Colony (in our area). The cars comes down the road and takes a left turn and runs into those shops. My building is seen in the background at 3:58 seconds into the song. The building in the background at 4.02 was the staff quarters of Tata Housing Centre (where my aunt used to stay; in fact her house itself is seen very clearly). This 20 seconds of the song was shot on a sunny day outside my home in Andheri. One can say ‘My personal 20 seconds of Bollywood’ 🙂 with my building and Tata colony being seen again at 4.18 of the song.

Now the readers may have guessed the reason that I have chosen this Bappi Lahiri sung & directed song to go with today’s post that is wishing Raj Kiran a very Happy Birthday. He is said to have gone missing for the last few decades; his last released film was ‘Chudail No. 1’ in 1999.

Then I read Rishi Kapoor’s quote somewhere “I’ve been wondering where Raj had disappeared. The question was haunting me for a very long time. Then these rumours of Raj being no more began doing the rounds. I was really disturbed. How can a colleague with whom I shared a really good times, just vanish from the face of earth? I decided to look up Raj’s elder brother Govind Mahtani to find out about Raj. I was so relieved when Govind told me that Raj was alive. But he was confined to an institution in Atlanta due to health problems. … apparently, he looks after his own treatment by working within the institution. It’s a heart-rending situation for an actor who was so successful at one time”.

Hope this once upon a time handsome looking actor is fine.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Missing movies of 1973-9)
——————————————-——————————

Today’s movie of ‘1973’ is ‘Charitra’.

As a cricketer in childhood I was aware that Salim Durrani has acted in a Hindi movie titled as ‘Charitra’. Seniors in our cricket playing group used to discuss such ‘interesting topics (?)’ then.

I think many of them may not have seenthis movie then as it was a movie with restricted viewing (i.e. passed by Censor Board with ‘A’ certificate).

I am not aware if this movie was at all screened in theatres or it just disappeared without trace.

Anyway we had always got to read that there was a movie in which cricketer Salim Durrani had acted.

Later on as a ‘movie watching’ boy and as a grown up person I became aware that Parveen Babi was the heroine of this movie and this was her debut movie.

Now equipped with HFGK I know that there were no songs in this movie except a ‘dohaa’ from ‘Ramayana’ played in the background. And the other sound track bearing ‘background music’, so there are two soundtracks of this movie which were released.

“Charita-1973” was directed by B.R. Ishara for ‘B.R.I. Arts’. B.R. Ishara was also the producer of this movie.

It had Parveen Babi (mentioned as the ‘hottest discovery) and Salim Durrani (mentioned as ‘ace cricketer of India’) with Manmohan Krishna, Asit Sen, Kanchan Mattu, Abhijeet Sen, Dilip Dutt, Johny Whisky, Amul Sen, Jyoti, Ratan, Latika, Jharna, Abbas, Murti, Ruzbay, Vasanti, Sameena, Madhu, Manoj, Raj Pankaj, Prem Pujari, Hira, Gulshan, Deepak Gayan, Madhu, and Gautam Sarin.

This movie also introduces two more new faces i.e. Arvind Kirad and Subramanium. C.S. Dubey had a special appearance in this movie.

This movie was written by B.R. Ishara who was also the producer and director of this movie. Editing of this movie was done by I.M. Kunnu.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 16.10.1973.

Music for this movie was composed by Bappi Lahiri. He also sung the ‘doha’ by Tulsidas from Ramayana’.

There were no songs in this movie and so no lyricist contributed in the movie.

Only two soundtracks were released.

Today we present the ‘doha’ soundtrack sung by Bappi Lahiri in his own voice.

In the picturisation we can see Parveen Babi in a ‘dharm sankat’ 🙂 I guess, looking at books on ‘Ramayana’ and ‘Mahabharata’ scattered around her …

Today 20th January’2023 is the eighteenth ‘remembrance anniversary’ of actress Parveen Bai. She left this world on this day in ‘2005’.

So let us pay our tributes to her today!!!

With today’s presentation this movie ‘Charitra-1973’ makes its debut and also attains ‘Yippeeee-hood’ on the blog.

Rajesh Khanna’s birth anniversary – A tribute

Today 29th December’2022 is the eightieth birth anniversary (29 December 1942 – 18 July 2012) of Rajesh Khanna, born as Jatin Khanna. Had he been alive, he would have turned eighty today.

On this occasion for today I could not complete my earlier planned post for this day under my series ‘ Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon’. However, since I do not want to miss to contribute for today’s occasion, I am presenting a song from a Rajesh Khanna movie so as to pay our tributes to Rajesh Khanna today.

I will also not repeat what I have earlier written about Kaka and his movies on the blog.

When I was looking for a song for today, I first thought that I will present a song with Pancham-Kaka-Majrooh combination. Later, I check for a Pancham-Kaka-Anand Bakshi combination and lastly, I thought I would present a song from a recent movie (i.e., from the eighties) of Rajesh Khanna. Finally, I decided that I will select a movie from the year ‘1985’ only, a year in which maximum movies of Rajesh Khanna were released.

And when I check the songs of this movie ‘Insaaf Main Karoonga-1985’ and went through its’ songs I found a song sung by Bappi Lahiri for Kaka. In this movie he has given his voice for two songs to Kaka. How did I forget all this? Even I do not remember if I had watched this movie then?

But one thing I remember that this movie was not a successful movie then, though ‘Wikipedia’ mentions it ‘a golden jubilee hit movie’ (?) now.

“Insaaf Main Karoongaa-1985” was directed by Shibu Mitra for ‘Seth Films International’.
It was produced by B.S. Sethi.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 10.05.1985.

The star cast of ‘Insaaf Main Karoongaa’ included Rajesh Khanna, Tina Munim, Padmini Kolhapure, Shakti Kapoor, Om Shivpuri, Joy Mukherjee, Tez Sapru, Leena Das, Aruna Irani, Chandrashekhar, Uttam Sodhi, Bob Christo and others.

This movie had six songs written by Verma Malik and Anjaan three songs each.

Here is the list of songs contained in this movie:-.

SNo. Song Title Lyricist Singer/s
01 Ye kya huaa….aap ki nazron se dil pe goli chalne lagi (part 1) Anjaan Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle
02 Ho ho ho… dum taana dum taana bole rabaab Verma Malik Shabbir Kumar, Manhar, Chandrani Mukherjee
03 Ek baras mein ek baar hi aati hai ye raat yaaron Verma Malik Bappi Lahiri
04 Salma o Salma main hoon Salma Verma Malik Sharon Prabhakar
05 Honey… kuchh maangu to dena Anjaan Asha Bhonsle, Bappi Lahiri
06 Ye kya huaa….aap ki nazron se dil pe goli chalne lagi (part 2) Anjaan Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle

Today’s song is sung by Bappi Lahiri as mentioned above. Lyrics are by Verma Malik, and music is composed by Bappi Lahiri himself.
(Readers will also note something special each time Bappi Da sings ‘ek’ in his style 😊 ).

On screen it is Rajesh Khanna performing on the song in his inimitable style. Also seen in the picturisation of this song are Tina Munim, Om Shivpuri (whose intentions does not look good 😊 ) Tez Sapru and many others.

This song is nice party song and I guess it is a ‘new year celebration party’ in the movie.

Anyway, we do also have a reason to celebrate- for Rajesh Khanna today – for his style and charisma and the memories of his movies with us. Secondly, we have only three days of ‘2022’ now, so let us cheer and celebrate 😊

Listening to this song may remind of some other song of same tune but I am not able to put a finger to the original song.

With this song this movie “Insaaf Main Karoongaa-1985” makes its debut on the blog.

(#Music Composer-Singer-Bappi Lahiri#10)

Today 27th November’2022 is the seventieth birth anniversary of Composer Singer Bappi Lahiri (27.11.1952-15.02.2022). He passed away this year on 15th February leaving behind the legacy of his ‘disco’ music and many other memorable songs in Hindi Film Music.

He made his debut as a singer in a Bengali movie ‘Daadu’ in 1972 and if we considered this first assignment of him in Bangla movie ‘Daadu’ which came to him in 1969 (as told to Anupama Chopra in an interview). He has many records on his name and he has been conferred by many many awards time to time.
The first Hindi movie as a music composer was ‘Nanhaa Shikaari’ which came to him in 1971 and this movie was released in 1973.

I had mentioned in my earlier post on the blog that the song ‘Bambai se aaya mera dost’ from ‘Aap Ki Khaatir-1977’ was my first introduction with Bappi Lahiri. This song was very popular then and was played frequently on radio and loud speakers or in orchestras.

After that I remember it was the songs of ‘Pyaara Dushman-1980’, ‘Armaan-1981’, ‘Waardaat-1981’, ‘Namak Halaal-1982’ etc. I liked the songs from ‘Armaan’, ‘Waardaat’, though I never had watched these movies until now. But these songs had become very popular then. I also liked the songs of ‘Disco Dancer-1982’ very much, and I specially remember them because in that summer vacation of 1983 after appearing the 10th board exams our group of friends would be listening to the songs of ‘Disco Dancer’ and ‘Nikaah-1983’ on cassette player.

Later on after getting connected with this blog and in the recent years I have come across many of his songs before the ‘disco era’ which in those years I was not aware that they were composed by him, but I liked them and have also shared few of them on the blog.

Still there are many of his songs which I get to listen on radio during my daily listening. There are many such songs which I had been listening and liking without knowing that they have been composed by Bappi Lahiri. I am trying to share them on the blog as possible.

Today I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Suraksha-1979’. Music for this movie was composed by Bappi Lahiri. I vaguely remember the posters mentioning ‘Gunmaster G-9’ of this movie in those years. I have yet to watch this movie.
This movie is going to make its debut on the blog today.

In the year ‘1979’ the following nine movies where Bappi Lahiri had composed the music were released.

Sno Name of the Film(Year) Date of Censor Board Certificate Lyricist/s
1 Aangan Ki Kali(1979) 15.05.1979 Shaily Shailendra
2 Ahsaas(1979) 23.10.1979 Indeevar, Ravindra Peepat
3 Aur Kaun?(1979) 05.01.1979 Amit Khanna
4 Do Hawaldaar(1979) 06.01.1979 Shaily Shailendra
5 Iqraar(1979) 10.09.1979 Kulwant Jani
6 Jaan E Bahaar(1979) 10.08.1979 Gauhar Kanpuri
7 Lahu Ke Do Rang(1979) 11.09.1979 Farooq Qaiser
8 Shikshaa(1979) 28.12.1978 Gauhar Kanpuri
9 Surakshaa(1979) 01.06.1979 Ramesh Pant, Farooq Qaiser

“Surakshaa-1979” was directed by Ravikant Nagaich for ‘Gopi Enterprises, Madras’.

It had Ranjeeta, Mithoon Chakravarty, Jeevan, Jagdeep, Aruna Irani, Prema Narayan, Mala Jaggi, Suresh Oberoi and others.

Tej Saproo and Balaji were introduced on the screen with this movie.

This movie has five songs released with seven sound tracks including one dialogue and one music sound track.

Ramesh Pant wrote four songs and Farooq Qaiser had written one song for this movie.

Today’s song is written by Farooq Qaiser. Singer of the song is Bappi Da himself with Annette and chorus.

This song is played while the titles of the movie are rolling. On screen we can see Mithoon Chakravarty lip-syncing the songs with beautiful girls around him.
This song is heard more nowadays in the musical reality shows where ever there are special episodes on Bappi Lahiri and Mithoon Chakravarty is special judge on the shows. He is a regular feature as ‘special jury’ at many such musical reality shows.

I don’t remember to have listened to this song frequently during those years when the movie was released. However this movie is said to be one of the successful movies of Mithoon Chakravarty then.

Let us now listen to today’s song and pay our tributes to Bappi Lahiri.

(Note – the second stanza mentioned below is not on the audio of this song it is played in the movie though.).

Hullo Atuldom

A special birthday. A landmark birthday. Don’t know what it is called in other parts of the country or world; but I know it as ‘Saptadi‘ meaning 70th birthday. And this post is to wish the concerned celebrity-entertainer who is an all rounder as far as emoting is concerned. He can be a repentant son (as in ‘Jaisi Karni Waisi Bharni’ (1989)), cute and lovable father (as in ‘Jis Desh Mein Ganga Rehta Hai’ (2000)), mean police officer (remember Inspector Laxman Bhide of ‘Insaaf’ (1987)) and the most lovable characters of Nandu to Raja Babu & Crime-Master Go-Go. These are just a few of the varied roles he has enacted in his 47 years in the film industry. I am sure the readers would have guessed that today is the 70th birth date of Shakti Kapoor.

Shakti Kapoor (birth name Sunil Sikanderlal Kapoor) is married to Shivangi Kolhapure which makes him jija of Padmini Kolhapure and Tejaswini (both are actors). He is father to Shraddha Kapoor (she made her Bollywood debut in 2010) and Siddhanth Kapoor (he debuted in 2013 as an actor prior to which he was assistant to director Priyadarshan). As we can see Shakti Kapoor has passed on his passion of acting to his children too. He is an actor who is fairly good at dancing. He made a great team with Kader Khan and Asrani in the films of the 80s and 90s. For the amount of time that he has been in the public sphere there will be many of his roles, scenes, even songs filmed on him that trigger memories.

Today’s song is one such song-dance sequence which I have dug out from memory. It is from the 1987 film ‘Dance Dance’, produced and directed by B Subhash. It hads Shakti Kapoor playing friend and troupe member with upcoming singers/siblings that Mithun and Smita Patil played. He falls in love with the sister (Smita Patil) and also marries her.

The plot has Resham (Shatki Kapoor) going a little wayward after the marriage viz. having extra-marital affairs, ill-treating the pregnant wife etc. Smita Patil dies and towards the climax, Resham reforms and saves Mithun from being shot by Amrish Puri & dies.

‘Dance Dance’ had songs that were essentially dance numbers (what else, the title is a giveaway) written by Anjaan and composed by Bappi Lahiri who was also the playback singer along with Vijay Benedict and Alisha Chinai. The blog already has the song “Everybody Dance With Pa Pa Pa” from this film.

With this song we also remember Lalji Pandey who passed away this date in 1997. He started his journey in Bollywood in 1953, wrote a lot of good songs through the 60s till the 90s. Many of the songs he wrote are still popular viz. “Bina Badraa Ke Bijuriya Kaise Chamke“; “Aapke Haseen Rukh Pe Aaj Naya Noor Hai“; “Aap Ki Inaayaten Aapke Karam“; “Luk Chhip Luk Chhip Jaao Na“; “Jis Ka Koi Nahin Uska To Khuda Hai Yaaro“. If I mention “Jis Ka Mujhe Tha Intezaar” and “Khaike Paan Banaras Waala” the readers will realize that Lalji Pandey is famous as Anjaan.

He was a lyricist who worked with composers from Datta Dawjekar to OP Nayyar, RD Burman, Laxmi-Pyare, Anu Malik, Chitragupta, and all music directors of his time

Wishing Crime-Master Go-Go a very Happy Birthday and thank you Anjaan ji for this song.

Forgotten Songs of Bappi Lahiri – Song # 2
————————————————————

For my second song of this series, I wanted to choose a song sung by Bappi Da himself. I was searching the movie and song databases, when I came across this haunting melody.

The years 1976 and 1977, amongst some others, are very special in my life. I had finished my school (SSC) and had entered the collage (Intermediate/11th & 12th) life. You can imagine a teen, who has just finished his, very strict, catholic convent school, entering the next phase in his life (collegian life, where there were no compulsions on wearing the uniforms, carrying a school bag and tiffin (lunch) or dabba, as it was called in my mother tongue (Marathi).

There were lots of other things which were not compulsory as well. I’ll leave it to your own imagination or experience. But the two most important things which I liked were, one – No Monitoring to check if the students attended the collage every day and two – there were 3 theatres/Cinema Halls next to my collage (a total of 9 theatres/cinemas with a radius of 2 – 3 kms.

Another unique thing was that my collage was a co-educational institution, whereas my school was a Boys Only convent. I was quite excited about this fact but came to understand soon enough that I was extremely shy when talking to any girl. Thus, movies were my only source of entertainment.

There were some very good movies released in those years which were block-busters like Kabhi Kabhie, Naagin, Adalat, Mehbooba, Kallicharan, Dharam Veer, AAA, etc. During those years, one young romantic pair was quite popular and that was Sachin & Sarikaa. This pair beczme a big hit in those days due to the stupendous success of Geet Gaata Chal (1975). Some of the other movies where they were paired in leading roles were Shyam Tere Kitne Naam, Raksha Bandhan, Zid, Madhu Malti, etc.

One more movie where they acted in romantic lead roles was Pratima Aur Payal released in 1977. My today’s song is a very haunting melody composed and sung by Bappi Lahiri for this movie. I have seen this movie but the memory is very vague about the story line. I only remember that it is told in a flash back about sculptor and a dancer. The story is told to Seema and Vikas – two lovers who bear striking resemblance to Manu, the sculptor and Kala, the dancer, who die a century earlier, in each other’s’ arms.

The movie directed by Sharan Aggarwal for producer B. K. Agarwal, under the banner Shivam Pictures, Bombay. The songs were penned by Rajkavi Inderjit Singh Tulsi, Shiv Kumar Saroj, Indeevar and Gauhar Kanpuri. The composer was Bappi Lahiri. The movie starred Sachin, Sarika, Om Shivpuri, Rita Bhaduri, etc.

I have been unable to locate the video of either the movie or the song being uploaded. Only audio in uploaded.

Today’s song “Soona Hai Jeevan Mera” is composed and sung by Bappi Lahiri and penned by Shiv Kumar Saroj.

The date today is 15 november 2019. It was on this day thirty years ago (on 15 november 1989) that Sachin Tendulkar made his test debut. By a remarkable coincidence, it was on this day fifty years ago (viz on 15 november 1969) that Gundappa Vishwanath made his test debut as well.

A test match is being played today (15 november 2019) by India at Indore. It was while watching this match that I became aware that it was exactly thirty and fifty years ago that two Indian batting legends made their test debuts.

These batting legends enhanced the stature of Indian batting. Seeing their batting, lots of batting talents came up in India. If today Indian batting is regarded as the strongest among all test playing nations then Gundappa Vishwanath and Sachin Tendulkar have played inspirational and important roles in that. It was appropriate that Indian batsmen “celebrated” the occasion by dishing out a memorable batting performance today- they hammered 406 runs in one day of test cricket. Last one hour saw more than one hundred runs being scored as T20 rate.

This occasion needs to be celebrated in the blog too, with a suitable song. While searching for a suitable song, I became aware that “Awwal Number”(1990) was a movie that centered around cricket.

“Awwal Number”(1990) was produced and directed by Dev Anand. This movie had Dev Anand, Aamir Khan, Aditya Pancholi, Neeta Puri, Ekta, Sudhir Pandey, Vikram Gokhale, Parikshat Sahni, Ram Mohan, Anjan Srivastava, Bharat Bhushan, Birbal, Sameer Khakkar, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Raj Kishore, Manmouji, Mac Mohan, Asha Sharma, Subbiraj, Ajit Vachchani, Aftab Shivdasani etc in it.

I was aware about the movie, but I was not aware that this movie was about cricket. It was not only about cricket, it even had a song about cricket. Just what the doctor ordered, as Ravi Shashstri, in his commentating avatar would have said.

Here is this song. It is sung by Udit Narayan, Amit Kumar and Bappi Lahiri. Amit Khanna is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri.

With this song, “Awwal Number”(1990) makes its debut in the blog.

Thanks to Prakashchandra, I have been able to watch the video of this song. The picturisation shows that this song is picturised on Dev Anand (lip syncing in Bappi Lahiri’s voice), Aditya Pancholi (Amit Kumar’s voice) and Aamir Khan (Udit Narayan’s voice).

“Waardaat”(1981) was produced and directed by Ravikant Nagaich for Gopi Enterprises, Bombay. This movie had Mithun Chakraborty, Kajal Kiran, Shakti Kapoor, Kalpana Iyer, Iftekhar,Birbal, Kesto Mukherjee, Jagdeep, Prem Bedi, Manorama, Praveen Paul, Thyagraj, Randhir, Dinesh Hingoo, Prem Kumar, Sharat etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. They were sung by five singers.

Today (7 november 2019) is the 71st birthday of Usha Uthup. On this occasion, here is a song from “Waardaat”(1981). This song is sung by Usha Uthup and Bappi Lahiri. Ramesh Pant is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri.

The song is picturised on Kalypana Iyer and Mithun Chakraborty.

Mithun Chakrborty enjoyed vast popularity among the chawanni chhaap movie goers of those days :). Such audiences were to be found all over India, and more so in eastern part of the country. Front stall movieoers of Bihar (including present day Jharkhand) “ditched” their own Shatrughan Sinha and became fans of Mithun Chakraborty. 🙂

I was among the small minority who did not like Mithun Chakraborty movies. 🙂

If teenagers of Maharashtra celebrated Ganpati festival, then teenagers in Eastern parts celebrated Saraswati Puja in a similarly grand way. Playing hindi movie music in these Saraswati Puja pandals used to be a major activity of these saraswati Puja festivities. Operating the record player and thus deciding which songs to play used to be a much sought after task. I had the proud privilege of being the record player operator in early 1980s at Ranchi. 🙂 I recall playing “disco” songs of those days, including the song under discussion. 🙂

Most Saraswati Puja organisers used to be academically challenged. They would bring their (largely untouched) textbooks in the pandal to be kept at the feet of goddess Saraswati, hoping that pooja thus performed would magically transfer the contents of those text books into their brains. 🙂

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

With this song, “Waardaat”(1981) makes its debut in the blog.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 4
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

This song has been suggested by Peevesie’w Mom ji, for inclusion in this series. Interestingly enough, the original song from the ‘Disco Dancer’ was posted on our blog by herself only, on June 16th, last year. Last year she has posted this on the birth anniversary of the prime protagonist of this song – Mithun Chakravarty.

So when I initiated this series, she almost immediately connected with me, and sent me the link to this repeat song, with the request that I post it on the 16th June. But my bad – even though I did start preparing this post well in time, 16th June was not to be, due to other compelling priorities etc. So today, fourteen days later, we are sending in this very belated birthday greeting to this original Disco Dancer.

The original song appears on our blog here >> “I Am A Disco Dancer”. It is from the 1982 film ‘Disco Dancer’ with music by Bappi Lahiri, and singing voice is of Vijay Benedict. In this later version from the 2010 film ‘Golmaal 3’, the song has been re recorded in the voice of Bappi Lahiri himself. This version is shorter than the original by one stanza.

The interesting peculiarity, rather a unique feature about this repeat song is that on screen it is performed by the same artist, after a gap of 28 years. And so, it is an interesting comparison to view both these songs side by side. When he performed this song in 1982, he was all of 30 years of age. And the repeat – well in 2010, Mithun was 58 years old. The energy and the intensity of his dance movements of course has dimmed down quite a bit. In this latter version we are bringing on today, most of his movements are single move shots, standing at one place, very unlike the vigorous moves he makes as he bounces across the stage, 28 years earlier. But surely, kudos to him for still taking on this challenge, and making quite a good show of it. It is in his eyes – the intensity in his eyes is still the same.

As I am writing about this unique repeat song, I am also reminded of another similar repeat, that is actually a hallmark in the history of Hindi film music. Yes, I am reminding readers of the very first song in Hindi films – “De De Khuda Ke Naam Pe Pyaare”. That song, and its singer, has made an even more significantly unique record in the annals of Hindi film songs. Wazir Mohammed Khan, who has sung, as well as performed on screen, this momentous song in ‘Alam Aara’ in 1931 – he was destined to repeat it twice, as both the singer and the on screen performer. The film ‘Alam Aara’ was remade twice, in 1956 and then again in 1973. With the first rendition being in 1931, after 25 years, it gets reprised in 1956, and then again after another 17 years in 1973 – the second repeat coming 42 years after the original performance.

WM Khan was born in 1906 – that makes him just 25 years of age when he appeared in the original ‘Alam Aara’ of 1931. With a white turban and a flowing grey beard, this young man of 25 years played the role of a 70+ years old mendicant. In 1956, he was fifty when he reprised this role the first time. And then, in 1973, he was 67 years of age, when he played the fakeer yet one more time, singing the same song. Of course, the third time he did not need a make-up artifact – the white beard we see is his own. The very first song in Hindi films – repeated twice over, and by the same singer-performer, over a period of 42 years. This accomplishment in the annals of Hindi films is likely to go down in history – unmatched and unchallenged.

On another note, since I initiated this series, I have been getting some very seriously interesting suggestions from various readers of our blog, and other friends in my circle. Some very interesting songs are coming up as repeats in the next episodes of this series.

Regarding the film ‘Golmaal 3’, I am not getting into details. The Wiki page of this film carries a lot of good information. One interesting connect I made about this film. Although this song is credited to Bappi Lahiri, being the music director of the original, the MD of ‘Golmaal 3’ is Pritam. Full name of this gentleman is Pritam Chakravarty. So we have the MD and the lead player in the film – both Chakravarty. To top it, the name of the character role played by Mithun in the film – it is Pritam. 😀 😀

OK, so the 4th episode done, with a promise of a few very interesting ones to come up. Watch this space – 🙂 .
