#the Decade of Nineties – 1991 – 2000 #
————————————————————————
(A tribute to Composer Khayyam Saab on his birth anniversary)
————————————————————————

Today 18th February 2023 is the Ninety-sixth birth anniversary of Mohammed Zahur “Khayyam” Hashmi Saab, whom we fondly know as Khayyam Saab. Had he been alive, he would have turned ninety-six years old today.

He was born on 18.02.1927 and he passed away on 19.08.2019.

As a tribute to him today I am presenting his song composition from the movie “Mohabbaton Kaa Safar-1995”.

‘Mohabbaton Kaa Safar-1995’ was directed by Mohammad Salahuddin Parvez for ‘Al Salam International Productions’. Mohammad Salahuddin Parvez was also the producer of this movie and he also wrote all the songs in this movie.

The star cast of this movie included Imran Khan, Shanti Priya, Aruna Irani, Raza Murad, Arjun, Amrish Puri, Mehmood and others.

Upasna Singh had a guest appearance in this movie.

This movie has as many as twelve songs. Out of these twelve songs Khayyam had composed eleven songs. (The composer for the remaining one song is not known).

Pankaj Udhas, Suresh Wadkar, Kavita Krishnamurty, Udit Narayan, Jagjit Kaur, Jayaprada and Amrish Puri had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

As mentioned in Hindi Filmography Vol-I (1986-2000) this movie was passed by Censor Board on 18.10.1995.

This movie, even though a recent release by the standards of the blog, seems to be an obscure movie of its time. I could not find videos of the songs of this movie or even the audio’s individual songs of this movie except a duet song and a complete ‘jukebox’ of the audio songs is available. (A partial video of this movie is available on internet but it seems to be copied one and it is not much clear).

Today we listen to a song from this movie which is a multiple version song having a duet, a male version and a female version.

It is sung by Pankaj Udhas and Kavita Krishnamurty. Lyrics are by Mohammad Salahuddin Parvez and music is composed by Khayyam Saab.

From the partial video of the movie available on internet it can be easily guessed that on the screen this song is performed by the actor Imran Khan and actress Shantipriya.

This song is a beautiful composition to listen to and it grows upon us if we listen to it a few times. It takes us to an altogether different world of its own.

With this song the movie ‘Mohabbaton Kaa Safar-1995’ makes its debut on the blog today.

Our tributes to Khayyam Saab on his birth anniversary today!!!

Let us now listen to the song …

A R Rahman started his filmy career as an independent music director with ‘Roja’ (1992) in Tamil which became a super hit film with its music playing an important role for the film’s popularity. About a year later, Hindi dubbed version of ‘Roja’ was released which also became a hit. I observe from the filmography of A R Rahman that 3 Tamil/Malayalam films out of his first 4 films were dubbed in Hindi and released. This may be a sort of record for A R Rahman at the beginning of his career as a music director among the music directors of South Indian films in the similar situation. Subsequently, some more Tamil films for which A R Rahman was the music director were dubbed in Hindi. One of the very successful films was ‘Kadhalan’ (1994) [English meaning: Loverboy] which was dubbed in Hindi with the title ‘Hamse Hai Muqabala’ (1995). The Hindi dubbed version of the film got Censor Certificate on May 31, 1995. The film was produced by K T Kunjumon and directed by S Shankar. Prabhu Deva and Nagma were in the lead role supported by S P Balasubrahmanyam, Girish Karnad, Vadivelu, Raghuvaran etc.

In an interview published in E-Times of India dated September 17, 2019, on the occasion of the completion of 25 years of the release of the film, K T Kunjumon, the producer of the film revealed that he and S Shankar, the director decided to work on the box office tested love story of a middle-class boy with a girl of an affluent and influential family. To develop the story further, Kunjumon gave an idea of fictionalization of the cold war then going on between the Chief Minister Jayalalitha and the Governor Dr Channa Reddy. Since Kunjumon was himself a functionary of AIADMK in Kerala, the Governor was made the villain in the film’s story.

In this film, all the ingredients for the box office success such as romance, dances, songs, villain, fights etc were included. The only worry for the producer and the director was the audience’s reactions to Prabhu Deva as a lead actor. In all his earlier films, Prabhu Deva had worked as a dancer and at most in a cameo role in the song sequence. To overcome the likely adverse reactions to Prabhu Deva as the lead actor, the producer and the director decided to make the film appealing to the audience, by making use of visual effects and animations in the songs.

‘Kadhalan’ (1994) became a super hit film which was beyond the expectations of the film makers as well as of the trade circles. The film’s songs became very popular. The film got five National Awards – four in the technical categories and one to debut playback singer, P Unnikrishnan, who sang Ennavale adi ennavale in Tamil. With more than expected success of the film on the box office front, the producer decided to dub the film in Hindi with the title. ‘Hamse Hai Muqabala’ (1995) for wider audience. Even Hindi version of the film became a box office hit.

The story of ‘Hamse Hai Muqabala’ (1995) which I have come to know only recently, did not motivate me to watch the film. To me, it was a wild imagination to show a constitutional head of a State as the initiator of the terrorist activities in his State to prove the breakdown of law and order situation thus facilitating the dismissal of the state government. The 9 songs of the film are musical treats, and I am happy restricting myself to watching the video clips of the songs. I will not miss the visual effects shown in the film as they are mainly used in the song picturization. All the songs have been written by P K Mishra. One song from the film has been represented on the Blog.

The two most popular songs of the film, if I go by the number of times, they were shown on the TV music channels in the year 1995 were ‘muqabala muqabala’ and ‘urvasi urvasi’. The immense popularity of these two songs seems to have sidelined in the popularity chart, my favourite song from the film, ‘sun ri sakhi meri pyaari sakhi’ which I am discussing here. The song is rendered by Hariharan. I have also enjoyed listening to the song’s Tamil equivalent, Ennavale adi ennavale rendered by debutant playback singer, P Unnikrishnan.

This song has everything. The beautiful lyrics by P K Mishra, the pleasing to the ear melody, the novelty in the orchestration, the soulful rendition by Hariharan and nicely picturised on Prabhu Deva and Nagma with visual effects in a picturesque location gives a feel of sublime love song. For P K Mishra, it is not an easy work of transliteration of Tamil song into Hindi as he has to find the appropriate Hindi words to match the lip syncing of Tamil words on actors in the song picturisation. So, in some lines, P K Mishra has used words in Hindi which is not the exact translation but broadly in line with the mood of the song.

I often get a feel of spirituality in A R Rahman’s musical compositions in which the semi-classical melody is blended with soulful orchestrations. For example, the violin played between 1:58 – 2:18 and the flute (probably played by Naveen Kumar) between 3:30 – 3:48 of the song provide the synergy of soul and exuberant. Another feature of the song is that Hariharan sings in a higher octave (pitch) some lines in the song to emphasise the genuineness of love. The wordings of the song also give me a feel of the Radha-Krishna song. This is more pronounced when I listen to the audio clip.

The song has a classical Carnatic touch. A couple of comments on ‘ennavale adi ennavale’ suggest that the song is based on Carnatic raag Neelambari. A further search on Youtube reveals that this raag is mainly used for singing lullaby. Truely, listening to this song makes me to close eyes with mind relaxed. I have listened to this song as well as its Tamil version many times during the last few days and my interest in the song has not diminished.

Hullo Atuldom

“Bombay” (1995) was written & directed by Mani Ratnam (born Gopala Ratnam Subramaniam) and produced by S. Sriram & Jhamu Sughand. It was the second installment of Ratnam’s trilogy of films that depict human relationships against a backdrop of political turmoil. ‘Roja’ (1992) and ‘Dil Se’ (1998) were the other two.

‘Roja’ had the Kashmir problem causing upheaval in the lives of a newly-wedded couple, when the husband (a cryptologist) is sent on a mission to help Army communications centre intercept military intelligence.
‘Dil Se..’ had Assam insurgency as the backdrop which causes problems in the life of a program executive of All India Radio when he is sent to cover festivities in Assam.

I am going to control myself from giving further descriptions of ‘Roja’ and ‘Dil Se..’. Another common thread between the three films were that the A R Rehman the ‘Mozart of Madras’ was the music director.
“Bombay” was initially thought up as a romantic drama involving a Hindu boy and Muslim girl. At the time that Mani Ratnam was writing the movie India was going through a phase and there were riots post the demolition of the Babri Masjid. It affected him to the extent that the incident and its aftermath found its way into the story. Thus an ordinary love story of a Muslim girl running away to join her love (a Hindu) at his work place in Bombay and the troubles that they faced in riot torn city became a commercially & critically successful movie.

The movie had a cast of Arvind Swamy, Manisha Koirala, Raja Krishnamoorthy, Nassar, Tinnu Anand, Akash Khurana, Prakash Raj etc. Master Hriday & Master Harsha played the twin sons born to the young couple who are named Kabir Narayan & Kamal Basheer. Sonali Bendre & Nagendra Prasad appeared for a song. I learnt, as I sat to write this, that Nagendra Prasad is the brother of Prabhu Deva & Raju Sundaram and son of choreographer/ director Mugur Sundar.

A small titbit about the movie or we can call it a thoughtful casting by Mani Ratnam- Kitty a.k.a. Raja Krishnamoorthy played Basheer the heroine’s father & Nassar played Narayan Pillai the hero’s father. Another titbit about Kitty is that he is born & brought up in Mumbai and I feel great pride in saying that he is an alumni of my school and is an MBA from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management studies. He is one of the actors who has a corporate background, made his debut in films through Mani Ratnam’s ‘Nayakan’ (1987), did a lot of films through the 80s & 90s; post 2000 he is back in the corporate world and acts in the odd film since 2017. He has also written Business and Life Management book. He is very vocal about civic issues.

Here I also feel like talking about Sonali Bendre (the dancer in today’s song) who is a Cancer- survivor. She was born on 1st January 1975 in Mumbai. She made her debut in films through the modelling world. Her debut film was “Aag” in 1994 opposite Govinda where she played a college student who commits suicide on being forced to marry someone whom she doesn’t like. She won a LUX new face award in that years’ Filmfare awards. She has acted opposite all top heroes of the 90s before quitting for family life in 2004. But she has been frequent on the small screen as host, judge etc in television shows. She has also appeared in Tamil & Telugu films. She was diagnosed with Metastatic Cancer in 2018 & underwent treatment in New York. Wishing her all the best and good health too.

The songs for the Tamil version were written by Vairamuthu and Vaali. The Hindi (dubbed) version had Mehboob as the lyricist. Mehboob (Alam Kotwal) had worked with A R Rehman in ‘Rangeela’ and was introduced to Mani Ratnam by ARR. That is how he came to write songs for the dubbed “Bombay”. Today’s song is in the voice of Remo Fernandes.

With this post we also wish A R Rehman on his birthday today. The multi award winner made India proud by winning international awards including two Academy Awards. Wishing the Padma Shri award winner A R Rehman a very Happy Birthday.

It can be seen from the table of 1995 that Lata Mangeshkar sang 8 songs in 4 movies released in 1995.

1 song sung by Lata Mangeshkar in movies of 1995 has been covered in the blog. That leaves us with 7 songs from 4 movies of 1995 that are yet to be covered.

Alphabetically “Dilwaale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge”(1995) is the first movie of 1995 that offers us a Lata Mangeshkar song to be covered in the blog.

“Dilwaale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge”(1995) was produced by Yash Chopra and directed by Aditya Chopra for Yashraj Films, Bombay. The movie had Amrish Puri, Farida Jalal, Anupam Kher, Kajol, Shahrukh Khan, Parmeet Sethi, Mandira Bedi, Karan Johar, Satish Shah, Achala Sachdev, Himani Shivipuri, Pooja Ruparel, Lalit Tiwari, Damayanti Puri, Hemlata Deepak, Arjun Sablok, Anaita Shroff, Pallavi Vyas, Tulika Tripathi, Rajesh Bhatija, Shanker Iyer, Mohit Kumar, Govind Khatri,Mansoor Merchant, etc in it.

The movie had seven songs in it. Four of these songs had the voice of Lata Mangeshkar in them. Two songs from the movie, including One Lata Mangeshkar song has been covered in the past.

Here is the second Lata Mangeshkar song from “Dilwaale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge”(1995) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Jatin Lalit.

The song is lip synced by Kajol. But before that, the song also shows Shahrukh Khan playing Rugly in England. Overall, the song showcases picturesque locations and sites of England. Farida Jalal and Karan Johar are also visible in the picturisation.

This youthful joie de vivre song is picturised on a 20 year old Kajol (Born 5 August 1974). Lata Mangeshkar at that time was thrice her age ! Lata Mangeshkar had in the past sung for Kajol’s mother (Tanuja). She reputedly even sang for Kajol’s grandmother Shobhana Samarth (or at least sang in a movie – Narsinh Avtaar -1949, where Shobhana Samarth was the leading lady). What longevity ! And she managed to sound youthful even at a age when she was already a senior citizen !

Lyrics of the song and other details have been sent by Prakashchandra.

4629 Post No. : 16280

Today’s song, like the previous song of “Jurm”(1990) discussed by me, is from a very recent movie ‘Criminal-1995’. The movie made its debut on the blog on 05.09.2008, with its beautiful romantic song ‘tu miley dil khile aur jeene ko kya chaahiye’. After that no song of this movie has been discussed so far.

Today after a gap of ‘4580’ days (breaking earlier record 😊 ‘4579’days) we are going to listen to the second song of this movie in the blog. Like others I was also not aware of the other songs of this movie except its song ‘tu miley dil khile aur jeene ko kya chaahiye’.

‘Criminal-1995’ was directed by Mahesh Bhatt (like ‘Jurm-1990’). And very rightly he first directed ‘Jurm-1990’(crime) and then moved on to ‘Criminal-1995’. (However, on our blog we first discussed ‘Criminal’ on 05.09.2008 and the ‘Jurm’ on 12.09.2008 😊 then in 2008).

Let us now move to the credits of this movie ‘Criminal-1995’.

As mentioned above it was directed by Mahesh Bhatt for ‘Vishesh Films’. It was produced by Mukesh Bhatt. It had Nagarjuna, Manish Koirala, Ramyah Krishnan, Laxmikant Berde, Johny Lever, Beena, Zaheer, Nasser, Sharad Babu with Gulshan Grover and Ajit. They were supported by Palav Vyas, Gurbachan, Mukesh Pandey, Vishweshara Rao, Jenny, Ravi Kiran, Dharmavupuru, Devdas Kankla and others. (Wikipedia mentions this as the last movie of actor Ajit.). Trishna made a guest appearance in this movie.

Screenplay of this movie was written by Sainath and dialogues were written by Jay Dixit. Editing of this movie was done by Sanjay Sankla.

It was passed by Censor Board on 21.07.1995 with restricted viewing certificate i.e., with ‘A’ certificate. This movie is said to be inspired by ‘The Fugitive-1993’ (an American movie) and was first made in Telugu in 1994 and later on in Hindi in 1995. Later it was dubbed and released in Tamil too.

This movie had eight songs (including ‘tu miley dil khile’ in three versions) written by Indeewar. Music for this movie was composed by M.M. Kreem.

Today we will listen to a song sung by Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik (as per ‘wiki’ and the YT link) and performed on screen by Nagarjuna and Manisha Koirala and 😊 Nagarjuna and Ramyah.

As mentioned above I mainly associate this movie with its song ‘tu miley dil khile aur jeene ko kya chaahiye’ only, so I was not aware about the other songs of this movie. And I have so far not watched this movie too.
While writing about today’s post, I checked other songs of this movie and I found today’s song somewhat familiar (maybe I had heard it during those days) when I was staying at Kota (Rajasthan).

let us now enjoy the music of ‘nineties’ and listen to this song …

I would request knowledgeable readers who have watched this movie to throw more light on the movie and its songs.

Hullo Atuldom

I must admit at the outset that I have very limited understanding of some words that appear in today’s song. I know it is not possible to call the lyricist and ask for meanings. I know for sure that there are followers to this blog who will explain what “Jaanejaan” and “Janejana” actually mean. All along I have been thinking that both mean “beloved”, am I right? I hope it is not too late to learn, considering these words have been used in umpteen songs of Bollywood, since god knows when!!!

This song has been penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri who is known for meaningful songs from the ’40s. It has been tuned by Anu Malik and sung by Udit Narayan and Sadhana Sargam. Onscreen pair is Aamir Khan with Mamta Kulkarni. It is from the Ashutosh Gowarikar directed “Baazi” (1995). If I am not wrong this was his directorial debut. It was a cop story where Aamir Khan (the cop) is on the trail of people involved in a multi-crore rupee international scandal. The movie was slammed by critics as an ambitious mish-mash of many Hollywood movies like ‘Rambo’, ‘Die-hard’ etc. put together with ample doses of desi masala. But the masses seemed to have liked it as it was a moderate success at the box-office.

With this song we are wishing Aamir Khan on turning an year older.

Some sites on the internet say that Sadhana Sargam, the female playback of this song, had her birthday on 7th March; though the anniversary page of our blog gives the date as 14th March. Whatever be the date here is wishing this singer, with a sweet voice, all the best for a music-filled life. She has been around since she was barely 9 when she sang in the chorus for the song from “Trishna” with Kishore Kumar as the lead singer.

Her mother was a classical singer and music teacher who knew Anil Mohile, who was then arranger for Kalyanji-Anandji. He introduced baby Sadhana to the music composers and she was part of their troupe on many stage shows. She is a trained classical singer too as is evident in her control over sur and taal at any pitch. It is a small wonder that she was a much sought after singer through the ’90s. She has sung in many Indian languages and has nearly 150 Tamil songs to her credit. She has been nominated a few times at the Filmfare awards but they have eluded her so far. The National Award that she has won was for a Tamil song.

Let us wish Sadhana Sargam a very Happy Birthday with this post.

01/10/2020 – 101st Birth anniversary of Majrooh Sultanpuri.
—————————————————————————-
Mujh se kaha jibrayil e junoon ne ye bhi vahi-e-ilaahi hai
Mazhab to bas mazhab-e-dil hai baaqi sab gumraahi hai

The Angel(of obsession) tells me that this too is divine decree,
The religion of love is the faith, rest all is deception

Dekh zindaan se pare, rang-e-chaman josh-e-bahaar
Raqs karna hai to phir paaon ki zanjeer na dekh

Look far away from the dungeons, towards the colourful garden and spirited spring
Want to dance (fly), than don’t be bothered by the limitation of feet.

Bahaane aur bhi hote hain zindagi ke liye
Ham ek baar teri aarzu bhi kho dete

There could be other reasons to live
Had the hopes of you been lost.

Jafaa ke zikr pe tum kyun sambhal ke baitth gaye
Tumhari baat nahi baat hai zamaane ki

When there is talk of unfaithfulness (or deception/tyranny), you are alert.
This is not about you, but lamenting is for the world at large.

Bacha liya mujhe toofan ki mauj ne warna
Kinaare wale safeena mera dubo dete

The tall waves of the storm have sheltered me, otherwise
the idle waves of the coast were bent on sinking my (last)boat.

Rok saktaa hamen zindaan-e-balaa kya majrooh
Ham to aawaz hain deewar se chhan jaate hain

Can the darkened holes of adversity stop us Majrooh
We are those sound waves which pierce the walls

Zaban hamaari na samjha yahan koyi Majrooh
Ham ajnabi ki tarah apne hi watan mein rahe

No one understands the words we speak, Majrooh.
We stayed as outsiders in our own homeland.

tujhe na maane koyi tujh ko iss se kya Majrooh
chal apni raah bhatakne de nukta-chinon ko

Don’t bother if they believe you or not Majrooh
Go on your way, let those critics wander around

———————————————————-

There is no better way of describing a poet and paying tribute to him, than quoting some of his work. So the major part of this post is going to be taken up by Majrooh sahab’s sukhan or kalaam. Today is the 101st birth Anniversary of the poet from Sultanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, the state in India which is the known as the ‘gehwara’ of urdu civilization. There are great shua’ra from other parts of the country, but those poets will also agree that UP is essentially the cradle of urdu. Like all children, the ‘khari boli’ urdu has also grown up and left the cradle. So that other children may enjoy the same nourishment and contentment that urdu had in its childhood.

Maybe some caravan’s upped and left the homeland and took their belongings. The cradle did not want to go away from the roots, so they took the embellishments and the toys from the cradle, and left if bereft. But some of the old dolls and some pillows were not taken with them as there was not enough space. They remained with the cradle and they strived to make the gehwara, the playground of urdu. Majrooh Sultanpuri is one of those old pillows which graced the old cradle.

After all this sentimentality, I don’t wish to write more. I have written a few posts about Majrooh and so have other contributors, in the past. So I will let his poetry do the talking.

I am reproducing one of his famous ghazals here :

Jab hua i’rfaan to gham aaraam-e-jaan bantaa gayaa
Soz-e-janaan dil mein soz-e-digaraan bantaa gayaa

Rafta rafta munqalib hoti gayi rasm e chaman
Dhire dhire naghma e dil bhi fughan bantaa gayaa

Main akelaa hi chala thha jaanib e manzil magar
Log saathh aate gaye aur kaarwaan bantaa gayaa

Main to jab jaanun ki bhar de saaghar e har khaas o a’am
Yun to jo aaya wohi peer e mughaan bantaa gayaa

Jis taraf bhi chal pade ham aabla-paayaan e shauq
Khaar se gul aur gul se gulistaan bantaa gayaa

Sharh-e-gham to mukhtasar hoti gayee uss ke huzoor
Lafz jo munh se na niklaa daastaan bantaa gayaa

Dahr mein majrooh koyi javedaan mazmoon kahaan
Main jise chhutaa gayaa wo javedaan bantaa gayaa

The song with this post is written by Majrooh sultanpuri, and the music director is Anu Malik. It is from Akele ham Akele Tum (1995). Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik are the singers. Aamir Khan and Manisha Koirala are the actors in the film, who are singing it on screen.

This is the fourth song in the ‘inspired/copied’ song series. The inspiration behind this song is “The Godfather theme” .

During the tough months of April/May, someone posed this quiz in the family group on whatsapp :

“What is it that connects, The Godfather, Arvind Swamy and Anu Malik ?”.

This song is the answer to the quiz.

Song-Raaja ko raani se pyaar ho gaya (Akele Ham Akele Tum)(1995) Singers-Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Anu Malik

Lyrics

Raaja ko raani se
pyaar ho gayaa
pehli nazar mein pehla pyaar ho gayaa
dil jigar donon ghaayal huye
teer-e-nazar dil ke paar ho gayaa aa
raaja ko raani se pyar ho gayaa

raaja ko raani se
pyaar ho gayaa
pehli nazar mein pehla pyaar ho gayaa
dil jigar donon ghaayal huye
teer-e-nazar dil ke paar ho gayaa aa
raaja ko raani se

armaan ki kaliyaan
khil ke bhi khilti nahin

hey

kyun nahin maane
phir bhi na jaane
kyun nahin maane
deewaana dil
beqaraar ho gayaa aa
raaja ko raani se
pyaar ho gayaa
raaja ko raani se
pyaar ho gayaa

raani ko dekho
nazren milin to
aankhen churaane lagi ee

sar ko jhukaa ke
kangana ghumaane lagi ee

raaja ko raani se
pyaar ho gayaa
pehli nazar mein pehla pyaar ho gayaa
dil jigar donon ghaayal huye
teer-e-nazar dil ke paar ho gayaa aa

If one asks Hindi movie people things like what is your favourite festival, favourite season etc, what would be their reply ? whichever festival and whichever season gives us song opportunities, would be the reply.

Little wonder then that Holi is the favourite festival of Hindi movies and rain is the favourite season.

But when we watch the Holi festival songs or rain songs in Hindi movies, we find that these songs are mostly “filmy”, viz unrealistic and sanitised. Reel life picturisation bears little resemblance to how things are in real life.

When it comes to rain songs, we find the hero and heroines singing merrily in rain, without a care in the world. For instance, we have Amitabh Bachchan and Mausami Chatterji singing in Mumbai rains and enjoying it. In real life, people would take shelter in nearby buildings and they would be very concerned about their wet clothes. In our childhood, our moms admonished us that we would catch cold if we get wet in rains. Clearly Amitabh Bachchan and Mausami Chatterji’s parents had not told them about the ill effects of getting wet in rains.

And that is not all. Mumbai rains are not as romantic as this song makes out to be. It is a nightmare in reality, as any Mumbaikar knows. Roads turn into four feet deep rivers and it is unsafe to cross them, as there is the risk of gutters being open. Sadashiv Amrapurkar’s brother ( who was a famous doctor of Mumbai) lost his life after falling in one such gutter a few years ago.

In reality, rains in Mumbai throws public life in disarray. Road vehicles, as well as trains, including local trains get affected. Even flights get affected.

But I have found that electricity is surprisingly intact in Mumbai despite torrential rains. Trains, in case they run, runs merrily over submerged tracks which is an amazing feat, seeeing that many electrical motors involved in Railway operations get submerged. People who get stranded and have to stay back in their offices or in the homes of their friends/ relatives have access to electricity which ebables them to share their rainy season selfies with this whatsapp friends. 🙂 It is during such calamities that Apple phone users realise that they shpuld either carry their chargers with themselves or they should have friends/ relatives who are also Apple users like them. 🙂

If you are a resident of any place other than Mumbai, then the first casuality of rains in electricity. First rain of the season, and one finds electicity vanishing for hours. When I was in Izatnagar, Bareilly, first rain of the season invariably led to electricity getting tripped as trees would fall on electrical wires (we were told) and electricity would get restored only after some 24 hours or so.

I always wonder how electricity department persons had their electrical wires passing in the vicinity of trees who would then get uprooted even if the rain was nothing but passing showers.

In Bareilly, I had another worry. I wondered if electricity had gone off in every household or is it only in my household. I was confused because the household located nearby would be fully illuminated throughout night even if other households had no electicity. Railway electical people knew their job. They would make sure that their top boss had uninterrupted electricity supply come what may and they could keep the other residents in the dark. So if other households have light and my household does not , then I worried that the wires coming to my house may have got disconnected somewhere due to wind. And that often turned out to be the case.

And what about the case when roop started leaking after heavy rain ! The persons who were supposed to look after such repairs would come long after rain had subsided and the water from roof had drained away. Then, like Indian police in Hindi movies who appeared long after the crime was committed and clues obliterated, they would ask- where is the leakage. I cannot sdee any leakage.

We are living in modern era of mobile phones and dish TVs. If one has back up electricity (through inverter) When it rains, you get message on your TV screen- “Your set top box is not getting signals. Please check the weather to see if it cloudy.” Just imagine the situation when world cup is going on and India your favourite team, has an important cricket man on TV. That is the situation today (6 july 2019). So imagine my situation when I found electricity gone at 3 :30 AM in the early morning and not coming back for four hours. One starts worrying how one would be able to watch the match. Inverter cannot last till then unless electricity comes back and recharges the inverter battery. Moreover, inverter can only run TV, tubelights and fans. What about fridge, geiser, AC etc. The stuff kept inside fridge would get spoiled if the black out gets prolonged.

If blackout gets prolonged, then even water supply may get affected after some time because water supply depends on working of electric driven pump motors.

I can safely state that Hindi movie rain songs do not touch upon the above mentioned major aftereffects of rain. Hindi movies touch the after effects of rains only superficially. As far as Hindi movies are concerned, rains means clothes of actors getting soaked and the actors enjoying it, that is all.

If one thinks that new rain songs of Hindi movies, that have come up after 1980s keep up with changing times and touch upon the inconveniences brought about by rains, one can only be disappointed. With time, the rain songs have undergone changes, but they are not necessarily changes for the better.

I came across an “interesting” Hindi movie rain song. The special feature of this song is that it has Hinglish lyrics in it. In the golden era, we used to have Hindi / Urdu/ Sanskrit lyrics such as “Abke saawan mein jee jale”, “rimjhim ke taraane leke aayi barsaat”, “barkha raani zara jam ke barso” etc. Even post golden era had songs like “baadal yoon garajta hai”, “tip tip barsa paani” etc. But the lyrics of this song under discussion takes the case. The wording of the song is “rain is falling chhamaa chham chham”. It is so bad that it is good. 🙂

Most rain songs in Hindi movies are picturised on lead pair and they are their personal intimate affairs. But this song is like a community affair. In fact, the movie makers have taken short cuts and cheated on the movie goers. The movie makers have taken “dahi haandi” festival and “Ganpati Festival” situations and tried to pass dance steps and situations of these festivals as a rain song.

If you wondered how badly and cheaply someone called Atul can dance, here is one such spectacle for you to witness. This song is picturised on Atul Agnihotri, Pooja Bhatt and others as a supposedly rain song. Get actors wet in rain, and there is your rain song- that appears to be the philosophy of the movie maker. The same short cut philosophy was followed for creating songs of other genre as well. For creating muslim devotional song, lyrics of such a song would include words like “Maula”, “Allah”, “Sajda” etc and the devotional song was ready.

Coming to the same under question, it is sung by Sudesh Bhonsle, and chorus. Surendra Sathi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shyam Surinder.

Name of the movie ? “Gunehgaar” (1995). It is good to see the movie maker pleading guilty in the title itself. 🙂

The movie was produced by Maan Singh Deep and Kalyani Singh and directed by Vikram Bhatt. The movie had Mithun Chakraborty, Atul Agnihotri, Pooja Bhatt, Tisca Chopra, Kiran Kumar, Ishrat Ali, Baby Ghazala, Mushtaq Khan, Anil Nagrath, Vishwajeet Pradhan, Ram Sethi, Girja Shankar, Mahavir Shah, Naresh Suri etc in it.

Here is this “rain” song from “Gunehgaar”(1995). With this song, the movie makes its debut in the blog. The lyricist and music directors also make their debuts in the blog with this song.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

Wishing A.R. Rahman a very Happy Birthday!!! He turns 51 today. This music director started his life at a young age of 11 when he played in the orchestra of composers of the stature of Illyaraja, M. S. Viswanathan, M.K. Arjunan (of the Malayalam industry) etc. He has accompanied Zakir Hussain (Hindustani music), Kunnaikudi Vaidyanathan (Carnatic music) etc. on world tours. He is a trained Key- board player along with mastering the piano, synthesizer, harmonium and guitar but is a self-confessed fan of the synthesizer as he feels it is an ideal combination of music and technology. He is known to combine western classical music and carnatic music with folk, reggae, jazz rock etc which gives hours of listening pleasure.

His debut in movies came after his stint as a jingle composer for ads. His first movie was Mani Ratnam’s “Roja” (1992) which got him that year’s national award. His Bollywood debut came in 1995 with Ram Gopal Varma’s “Rangeela” though he was already famous in the Hindi-speaking regions of India through the dubbed versions of his South-Indian films.

Today on his birthday we will have a song from his Hindi debut film “Rangeela”. This movie is the story of a young girl (Urmila Matondkar) who is a chorus dancer in the movies with a passion for filmy dances. She has a childhood friend (Amir Khan) who sells movie tickets outside cinema halls in black. There is also Jackie Shroff who plays a matinee idol who spots this chorus dancer as she practices in the early morning hours on the beach side. He promotes her in the industry and she becomes a star but when it comes to love and marriage, she goes back to her childhood friend. So that then was the story of Rangeela in short.

Today’s song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Aditya Narayan and Mehboob was the lyricist. The song is Urmila’s dream sequence where she is seen dancing through the streets of Navi Mumbai and the local train station in that area of Mumbai. This movie got A.R. Rahman two of his fifteen (Hindi) Filmfare awards – Best Music and R D Burman award for best new talent. {He has sixteen Filmfare awards for his South Indian films}. The movie gave Urmila Matondkar and her designer Manish Malhotra instant recognition in the movies. The film marked the return of Asha Bhonsle with two songs, she had long retired from accepting playback singer awards like her sister. She received a Filmfare special award for the other song – Tanha tanha yahaan pe jeena”.

Song-Yaai re yaai re zor laga ke naache re (Rangeela)(1995) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Aditya Narayan, Lyrics-Mehboob Kotwal MD-A R Rahman

Lyrics

yaai re
yaai re
zor laga ke naache re
yaai re
yaai re
mil ke dhoom machaaye re
chal mere sang sang
le le duniya ke rang
ho ja rangeela re
rang rang rangeela re
yaai re
yaai re
zor laga ke naache re
yaai re
yaai re
mil ke dhoom machaaye re
chal mere sang sang
le le duniya ke rang
ho ja rangeela re
rang rang rangeela re

itne chehron mein apne chehre ki pehchaan toh ho
pehchaan toh ho
bade bade naamon mein apna bhi naam o nishan toh ho
pehchan toh ho
jeene mein phir toh kya baat ho o
din naya aur nayi raat ho o
har ghadi bas khushi saath ho o o
yaai re
yaai re
zor laga ke naache re
yaai re
yaai re
mil ke dhoom machaaye re
chal mere sang sang
le le duniya ke rang
ho ja rangeela re (rangeela re)
rang rang rangeela re (rangeela re)

arrey
yaaron mere paas toh aao
meri mushqil door bhagaao
cadbury bole main meetha hoon
amul bole main meetha hoon
horlicks bole main achchha hoon
complan bole main achchha hoon
kya sabne socha main bachcha hoon
chocolate khane me tension hai
doodh peene mein tension hai
tension tension tension

laanat hai ji us par
duniya mein hi rehkar
duniya me jo jeene ke andaaz ko naa jane
maathe ya haathon pe
chaand ya taaron mein
kismat ko dhoondhe par khud mein kya hai ye naa jaane
khudpe hi hamko yakeen ho,
mushkilen raah ki aasaan ho
donon haathon mein ye jahaan ho o
yaai re
yaai re
zor laga ke naache re
yaai re
yaai re
mil ke dhoom machaaye re
chal mere sang sang
le le duniya ke rang
ho ja rangeela re
rangeela re ae
rang rang rangeela re
rangeela re

As repeatedly mentioned earlier, those were the days when under ‘Super Cassettes Industries Limited’ banner, Gulshan Kumar had released a number of Devotional and Gazal cassettes under T-Series, to the utter joy of real good taste music lovers.  He had many singers as well as many MDs under contract and had made a bank of songs suitable for various situations and had used them in films, whenever needed.
