Today (18 november 2019) is thr 118th birth anniversary of V Shantaram (18 november 1901- 30 october 1990).
When one looks at the career of V Shantaram, one can only be amazed. He made his debut as an actor in 1921 in a silent movie “Surekha Haran”(1921). His last movie was as a director in “Jhanjhaar”(1987).
After acting in a few silent moves, he turned director with “Netaji Palkar.”
He acted, produced and directed many movies, including some movies that are considered landmark movies in the annals of Indian cinema.
“Ayodhyache Raja”(1932), directed by him under “Prabhat Films” was the first Marathi talkie. It was also made in Hindi as “Ayodhya Ka Raja”(1932). “Maaya Machhindra”(1932) also came in the same year. “Amar Jyoti”(1936), “Aadmi”(1939) and “Padosi”(1941) were some well known Prabhat talkies films directed by him.
He then left Prabhat and formed Rajkamal Kala Mandir. More than twenty movies were produced by Rajkamal. “Dr Kotnis Ki Amar Kahaani”(1946), “Jhanak Jhanak Paayal Baaje”(1955), “Do Aankhen Baarah Haath”(1957), “Navrang”(1959), “Stree”(1961), “Sehra”(1963), “Geet Gaaya Pattharon Ne”(1964) etc were some of his memorable movies under this banner.
On the occasion of his birth anniversary, here is a song from “Jal Bin Machhli Nrity Bin Bijli”(1971). This movie was produced and directed by V Shantaram. The movie had Abhijeet(Introducing),Sandhya, Dina Gandhi aka Dina Pathak, Raja Paranjape, Vatsala Deshmukh, Iftekhar, Birbal, Vasant Parekh, Ravindra, Paresh Nanda, Nanda, Basant and new artists Minal, Praveen Kumar, child star Sushant Ray.
The song is sung by Lata. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
The song is preceded by several minutes of dance. And what a dance performance ! A few days ago, I had discussed a “snake” dance which I thought was one of a kind. Here is another one of a kind dance. It is picturised as a “snake-peacock-Eagle” dance. The dance director Praveen Kumar has done a great job choreographing this dance. Incidentally, the term choreography was not known those days.
The dance is picturised on Sandhya and Minal. Abhijeet and Raja Paranjpe are also visible in the picturisation.

The song (including the dance) is nearly ten minutes long. And every second of this long song is worth watching.

“Baabul Ki Galiyaan”(1972) was directed by Satya Dev Narang for Narang Films Combines, Bombay. This “social” movie had Hema Malini, Sanjay Khan, Sonia Sahni, Jagdeep, Shatrughan Sinha, David, Asit Sen, Manmohan Krishna, Bipin Gupta, Jayshree T, Savita, Brahmchaari, Kuljeet, Chandrima Bhaduri, Satyen Kappu, Tuntun, Hiralal, S N Bannerji, Bharm Bhardwaj, C S Dubey, Johny Whisky, Dilip Dutt, Birbal, Majnu, Abhimanyu Sharma, Pal Sharma, Tiwari, Ramesh Kumar etc in it.
The movie had five songs in it. One song (the most popular song from the movie) has already been covered in the past.
Here is the second song from the movie to appear in the blog. This song appears 3904 days after the first song appeared in the blog on 3 november 2008.
The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravi.
The song is picturised as a nagin dance song on Hema Malini. So Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladeshi wicketkeeper batsman has another Naagin dance song for his reference and necessary action. 🙂
The picturisation shows a snake charmer playing been and making a snake to sway (what people mistakenly believe to be snake dance), with Sanjay Khan looking on. I thought that the sapera is Bhagwan, but the star cast does not mention his name. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify him.

The 1960 film ‘Naache Naagin Baaje Been’ is turning out to be a treasure hunt. The film is packed with such wonderful melodies. I pick today’s 9th song of the series from this film.
On screen this song is performed by Chandrashekhar and Kum Kum. Kum Kum is at her bewitching best in this dance sequence, as she is in practically all dances she has performed on screen. Throughout the entire dance sequence, one does not see her let up the ‘बलखाना’ as she takes on the challenge thrown by the hero, that she should not move like a ‘नागन’ – wonderfully executed dance steps.
The song is from the pen of Majrooh Sb, and the lilting composition is from the mind of Chitragupt. Enjoy this wonderful song, and the enchanting dance that accompanies it.
[Author Note: There are three lines in the second antaraa, that have been spliced out, most likely a damaged portion of the original celluloid film. I tried to check out more video versions of this song, but apparently, this error seems to be very old, and is propagating through all available versions that I could check quickly. I then tried to bring in the audio of this song. However unfortunately, the audio version of this song from the 78 rpm recordings contains only two antaraas. The antaraa that is not present in the audio version, is the very antaraa that has the missing lines in the video. So no luck. 😦 🙂 .]
