Today’s song is a song sung by Kishore kumar in his inimitable style, from the film Dilli Ka Thug-1958.
1958 was the year when so many musical films came. One could see the excellence of lyricists and the art of the Music Directors making those songs popular. In those days the active lyricists were Shakeel Badayuni, Sahir Ludhianvi, Shailendra, Majrooh, Hasrat Jaipuri, Bharat Vyas, Rajendra krishna, Prem Dhawan, Kaifi Azmi, Pradeep to name a few.
Composer kalyan ji debuted as an independent MD, for the film ‘Samrat Chandragupt’, in which a song written by Nirupa Roy was used. Iqbal Qureshi entered films with ” Panchayat”. Anand Bakshi debuted with ‘Bhala Aadmi’ and continued for another 45 years, becoming one who wrote maximum number of songs for Hindi films.
This was also the year in which, due to a misunderstanding, the long standing bond between Rajendra krishna and C.Ramchandra was broken and it became an additional reason for C Ramchandra’s downfall from his successful musical career. In this year 3 Qawalis became Hits. First was ‘Sadhana’s ‘ Aaj kyun humse parda hai’. The other 2 qawalis were from B and C grade fils. ‘Jungle Princess’ had the first ever qawali’ Adaayen teer hain’, which was a competition between Males and females. The third one was a real surprise. Film ‘Al Hilal’ gave ” Hamen to loot liya hai milke husn walon ne”, composed by Bulo C Rani.
Nargis- Sunil Dutt got married on 11th March and Shashi Kapoor- Jeniffer got married on 2nd July. Old time actors Gope and Yaqub expired. Devika Rani got Padmashree.
Some of the popular and Hit films were Aakhri Dao-Madan Mohan, Aji Bas Shukriya – Roshan, Amar Deep-C.Ramchandra, Chalti ka naam gaadi, Kala pani, Sitaron se aagey and Solva Saal – S.D.Burman, Dilli ka Thug-Ravi, Howrah Bridge, Phagun and Ragini- O.P.Nayyar, Lala Rukh and Phir Subah Hogi- Khayyam, Madhumati-Salil Chaudhari, Parvarish-Dattaram, Sadhana-N.Datta, Yahudi-Shankar-Jaikishen etc etc.
Dilli ka Thug-1958 was prodominently a Kishore Kumar film.
Kishore Kumar came to Bombay to become a singer, but he was forced by the circumstances to become a comedy actor. For Kishore Kumar, his dream of becoming a singer was looking bleak. Instead of singing, he was getting offers to do comic roles in films. It was only Dada Burman who dared to cast Kishore as the Playback singer for Dev Anand. The first ever song he sang for Dev Anand was ” Mere labon mein chhipe”-Baazi-51. However, it was not until his song in Munimji-55 ” Jeevan ke safar mein raahi” that he proved he was a singer first and actor next. Out of all 12 songs of Munimji, only this song was the most popular and hummable. In Funtoosh-56,Dada gave him ” Dukhi man mere”.By now Kishore was out of Saigal’s shadow. The song clicked, but not Kishore, because in that period he had heaps of acting offers and there was no time for concentrating on singing. He settled for singing his own songs and those songs for Dev which Dada gave him occasionally.
When Kishore kumar was trying very hard to establish himself in the film industry, at least as a comedy hero-if not a singer, it was Dada Burman who helped him by giving him songs in almost every film of his in the 50s.
Dada was an experimentalist and had judged Kishore very well. He knew that Kishore was a talented artiste, though without formal training in music. In the days when the music was serious and classical oriented, there were no takers for Kishore except Dada Burman. Kishore had a plain voice and had nothing else except his spontaneity in front of the mike to help him.
S D Burman was a path breaker. There are few instances of Dada going against the tide and winning ! The trend in the film industry was to use one singer for one actor in one film. Like, Mukesh for Raj Kapoor, Kishore for Rajesh khanna or Rafi for Dilip or later on for Shammi kapoor etc. Dada did not subscribe to this theory. He would use the singer depending on the mood of the song and situation of the song in the film. No matter if he has to use more singers for one Hero in One film.
Thus, Manhar, Kishore and Rafi sang for Amitabh in Abhimaan and Rafi, Kishore and Manna Dey sang for Dev Anand in Manzil. He had tried Kishore on Raj Kapoor in Pyar-50. In Sagina, Kshore sang for Dilip Kumar.
Kishore Kumar is the only singer in the world to have sung songs for three generations of actors from one family-TWICE !
He sang song “Bainya chhodo” for Mumtaz Ali, father of Mehmood-for whom Kishore sang many songs and in film Yehi hai Zindagi, Kishor sang for Mehmood’s son Lucky Ali.
He sang for Raj Kapoor in Pyaar-50, then he sang many songs for his son Rishi Kapoor. In the 2008 film, ” Bachna ae Haseeno”- Kishore Kumar song- Bachna ae Haseena was lip synched by Rishi Kapoor’s son, Ranbir Kapoor.
Despite the outstanding success of ”Padosan”-68, Kishore remained where he was- neither an actor nor a singer. The turning point came in 1969. S D Burman was composing music for ‘Aradhana’. He had already recorded 2 duets of Rafi and then Dada Burman fell seriously ill. He handed over the reins of music of this movie to his son R D Burman. Dada had already made the tunes. R D had only to make the recordings. Fresh from the success of Padosan and the songs of Kishore in that film, R D decided to record 2 solos and 1 duet with Lata in Kishore’s voice. Dada was not at all in a position to even protest and R D had never preferred Rafi over Kishore.
Kishore recorded the songs and ”the rest is History” as they say. In the 21st year of his film career, finally, Kishore had achieved what he had been dreaming of. Now every other composer wanted only Kishore and not Rafi. R D Burman had quietly brought a revolution in HFM, hoodwinking all, even his own father ! On his part, Kishore too had matched Rajesh Khanna’s screen presence with vitality and freshness in the songs of Aradhana. The success of Aradhana-not only its songs, but also a successful popular film with the most ordinary plot ever, was so much that people forgot that Hemant Kumar too had used Kishore Kumar for Rajesh Khanna in 1969 only itself in film Khamoshi, for the song” Voh shyam kuch ajeeb thi”. But this classic song from Hemant Kumar was swept away in Aradhana floods.
With ‘Aradhana’, Kishore’s second Golden period started-1970 to 1975, from 1970 to 1985, it is called Kishore Yug in HFM, but the melodious songs which he sang during the 6 years, i.e. 70-75 were really his best. Even after that Kishore did give some good songs, but,as he himself said in an interview ” the real music ended with 1975. Later on it was only factory production on line”. During 1970 to 1985 he sang more than 1800 songs in 764 films. You can imagine the quality of songs in later years.
Kishore had waited for 21 years to become a Singer, and he did become one, he sang only for 18 years !
it is a coincidence that one of the actors in Film Dilli ka Thug had also come to films to become a singer- and he had recorded some songs too- but ended up as an actor. The name may be unexpecte for most readers. He was IFTEKHAR !
Sayyadana Iftekhar Ahmed Shareef was born in Jallundhar on 26-2-1922. His father was a big gun in a private company at Kanpur, so his education upto Matriculation took place in Kanpur. Then he went to Lucknow to do a Diploma in Painting. He was very fond of singing and wanted to become a singer like the legendary Saigal. Naturally , he went to Calcutta to gain entry into singing . There he met Kamal Dasgupta who was impressed with his personality and mannerisms.
He not only recorded 2 of his songs, but also recommended his name as an actor to his production company. In 1944, Iftekhar was taken as an actor in the film Taqraar, opposite actress Jamuna. Next year, he did Ghar-45 and also Rajlakshmi-45- in which Talat Mehmood also acted and sang songs. During this period he fell in love with a Jew Girl- Hanna Joseph, who stayed in his building. Iftekhar broke his earlier engagement to Sayeeda from Lucknow and got married to Hanna, after converting her to Islam. Sayeeda never married in her lifetime after this break up. He got 2 daughters.
After 1947, his family had migrated to Pakistan, but he chose to remain in India. By that time he had done 2 more films, namely, Aisa Kyun and Tum aur Main. He decided to shift to Bombay due to riots in Calcutta in 47-48. In Bombay, he had no work and faced a lot of problems. His wife had to do a job for sustenance. Iftekhar was recognised and helped by Ashok Kumar. He was given a role in the film Muqaddar-50. Being a good painter, Iftekhar taught Painting to Ashok Kumar. In the next 20 years, he did 70 films.
Then came the film Ittefaq-1969, in which he did the role of a Police Officer. This film changed his life and there was no looking back. Films like Zanjeer, Deewar etc further augmented his image and he was well entrenched. He bought a house, car etc. His daughters got married. Iftekhar acted in 318 films in all.
After his younger daughter’s death, Iftekhar was a broken man. He fell ill and within a month’s time, he died on 1-3-1995.
It is written in many places on the Internet, that Iftekhar was the brother of actress Veena. It is NOT true. His only sister Shameem got married and migrated to Lahore, in 1947, where she died recently. Veena’s brother Iftekhar was a different person who got embroiled in the love affair of actress Suraiya. ( adapted, with Thanks, from http://www.beetehuedin.blogspot.com in addition to my own notes.)
With today’s song video, film Dilli ka Thug-1958 becomes an YIPPEE film, having all its songs covered here. Enjoy….

The blog has songs from “Shri 420” (1955), “Shrimati 420” (1956) & “Ustaad 420” (1969) – from which “Shrimati 420” is one short from being YYIIPPEEEED. Hindi films have a few more ‘420’ (char sau bees). There is a “Khiladi 420” which came in 2000 & “Chachi 420” which released in 1997. These are the 420/s that I know of, there may be one or two more films with ‘420’ in their title.
We shall focus on “Chachi 420” today, on the occasion of Kamal Haasan’s birthday. He is turning 69. He was born in a Tamil Iyengar family to a lawyer-freedom fighter father & homemaker mother. Two of his brothers- Charuhasan & Chandrahasan have also acted in Tamil films. Kamal’s nieces Anu Hasan & Suhaasini are also actresses as also his own daughters Akshara & Shruti. He was married to Bharat Natyam danseuse Vani Ganapathy and then Sarika Thakur (of Hindi Films fame). All-in-all a family of entertainers.
Kamal Haasan has also produced & directed films, has hosted a few reality shows on TV in addition to being an actor in Tamil (his base language), Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada & also Bengali. He has a huge fan following all over South India and it is very normal to see huge cut-outs of him whenever a film of his is due to release. There are fans of his among the film-fraternity too & many of them have accepted mini to maxi roles just to be in the same frame as him. “Hey Ram!” (2000) is a case in point where Shahrukh Khan & Rani Mukherjee had small roles; even Hema Malini, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri were there in that film. He had also appeared in a Silent Film – “Pushpak” in 1987 which also had Tinnu Anand, Farida Jalal, Amala etc in the cast. It was a successful entertainer. He has experimented playing a variety of characters like a Dwarf in ‘Appu Raja’ (original Tamil title- ‘Apoorva Sagodharargal’), 4 lookalike brothers separated at birth in ‘Michael Madan Kama Rajan’ & 10 varied characters in ‘Dasaavatharam’.
“Chachi 420” was a film which had him in the role of ‘gentle lady’ for nearly half the film. It was co-written, produced & directed by Kamal Haasan. It starred Amrish Puri, Om Puri, Paresh Rawal, Johnny Walker along with Ayesha Jhulka (I think it was a guest appearance). Tabu was the heroine and Fatima Sana Shaikh was the child star. (Fatima played Geeta Phogat in the 2016 released “Dangal”.)
The film was a remake of Kamal Haasan’s 1996 released Tamil film “Avvai Shanmughi” which itself was inspired by “Mrs Doubtfire” (1993). This sentence will give the followers of the blog an idea about the movie.
For those who haven’t seen ‘Mrs Doubtfire’ or ‘Avvai Shanmughi’ or ‘Chachi 420’ here is the synopsis :-
“Wealthy Janki (Tabu) falls in love with poor Jaiprakash (Kamal Haasan), much to the displeasure of her parents, and ends up getting married, and living with her husband. She subsequently gives birth to a daughter. Differences surface between the couple, and Janki leaves Jaiprakash and moves back in with her parents. Jaiprakash wants to see his daughter, but is prevented by Durgaprasad (Amrish Puri), Janki’s dad, so he assumes the guise of a woman, calls himself Laxmi, and starts working as a nanny for his daughter. Complications arise when Durgaprasad gets attracted to Laxmi and wants to marry ‘her’.”
The dialogues by Gulzar were another highlight (imo) & the way they have been delivered- the film should be seen to enjoy that aspect. Vishal Bharadwaj was the music director & Gulzar wrote the songs.
“Macarena” a song by the Spanish pop duo Los del Rio was very popular in the early 1990s. It inspired a few Indian film makers & musicians too. “Chachi 420” also had a take-off on it . Today we shall have that song. It is filmed as “Karva Chauth” celebration song. Kamal Haasan sings for himself & Asha Bhonsle sings for Tabu (who had her birthday on 4th november. Belated wishes to her).
Let us enjoy the song – in all these years of hearing this song there are a lot of words which I haven’t deciphered specially at the start of the song. But, it is enjoyable.

Hullo Atuldom
September 5th is the 135th birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who was a teacher (Professor to be exact) who also went on to be the 1st Vice President of Independent India (1952- 1962) and the 2nd President of India (1962- 1967).
I have only read about him, in history books, as he had passed away (in 1975) by the time I became conscious about things happening around me. I have read that his Thesis on “The Ethics of the Vedanta and its Metaphysical Presuppositions” was published when he was only 20. From 1909 onwards, he was appointed a Professor at Madras Presidency College & later at The Maharaja’s College, Mysore; still later at the University of Calcutta. He was Vice Chancellor at the Andhra University and after that at Benaras Hindu University.
He was not active during the freedom struggle & his political career started only after his successful academic career. Post independence Dr. Radhakrishnan represented India at the UNESCO and also was India’s Ambassador to the Soviet Union before being elected Vice President of the country in 1952.
When he became President Of India in 1962 some of his students & friends requested him to allow & celebrate his birthday on September 5th. He replied (hope I am correct about this) “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teachers’ Day.”
And so, since then India celebrates 5th September as Teacher’s day.
(Most of the above I have learnt in my history books and some information I have extracted from the internet.)
As a high school student, I used to look forward to these type of special days as our school & later college had their own style of celebrations. For Teacher’s day, some students were assigned the duties of being a teacher, to any particular class or subject. And like all teachers, we used to dress differently on that day; meaning we were allowed the privilege of attending school in coloured clothes (we used to call it un-uniform, I think). We students also used to contribute towards buying flowers & gifts for our teachers in addition to decorating the classrooms with festoons etc. For this, the students used to reach the school earlier than usual, so that everything was in place before the school began. The students, who were assigned teacher duties, would go from class to class, according to the given time-table, & get to experience what it was to be a teacher. All this would be supervised by the particular subject teachers & let me tell you, personally, I used to love being a teacher.
It makes me feel good (or is it proud, can’t name my exact feelings) that I am in touch with many of the teachers who made me what I am. I try to meet them whenever there is any event in the school, ever since I left school after class 10. And it makes me feel loved when they recognise in spite of all the years that have passed since.
This is my message to my teachers (hope at least some of them read it)
‘Wishing all my teachers a very happy teacher’s day. My namaskarams to all of them. Starting from Banaji teacher in my nursery school followed by Ratnamma, Vijayalakshmi & Ammu teacher in primary and the full set of teachers in secondary – Saraswati Ramachandran, Shymala, Jayamani, Kurup, Shankuntala, Mangala Joshi, Gaonkar, Prabha, Gokhale, P.T. teacher & Sir, Ajinkya, Shaila, Tiwari Sir, Pillai Sir, Abraham & Mariam Joseph. Plus all my teachers in college – Deepa Rathi Ela vora, Nina Dias, Joyce Joseph.
A big hug to all of you.
Thank you for giving me a good Base”
(Unfortunately some of the teachers mentioned in there are no longer with us)
In recent times, I have seen a few messages that thank friends and family- Mata, Pita & Guru (in that order) on teacher’s day. That in my opinion is a very good thing.
Last month I saw a film on a satellite channel, that showed how a teacher was trying to mould the lives of students who could not afford tuitions from expensive coaching classes. The film showed how some classes made a lot of profit, imparting tuitions to students who have dreams of entering the IITs & engineering colleges in India. Students who are, otherwise, bright in studies cannot even dream of getting into these classes, leave out the engineering colleges, due to the prohibitive fees structure prevalent. So, the film shows how this particular mathematics teacher & educator manages to coach his batch of 30 students crack the IITJEE, successfully.
The film was called “Super 30” and was the biography of Anand Kumar from Patna, Bihar; who was awarded the Padma Shri by the government for his efforts in the field of education & literature. By 2018, 422 out of 510 of his students had made it to the IITs.
“Super 30” (2019) was the film which had Hrithik Roshan play Anand Kumar with Aditya Srivastava, Mrunal Thakur, Sadhana Singh, Manav Gohil, Pankaj Tripathi, Veerendra Saxena, Amit Sadh as the supporting cast. There was a whole set of new faces playing the students. The film was treat to watch. It had songs written by Amitabh Bhattacharya & Ajay-Atul were the music directors. The song with this post is in the voice of Hrithik Roshan. He is seen asking his students to develop a questioning nature, find a solution where ever possible.
A salute to the teachers. Happy Teachers Day

Today’s song is the Title song from the film Chameli ki shaadi-1986.
This is one of my favourite films, amongst the hundreds of films that I have seen since the 1940’s decade. As such I love seeing genuine comedy films. Every Hindi film has atleast one or two comedy scenes. In earlier films, there used to be a specialist actor – the Comedian. Nowadays, especially from the Amitabh times, the film’s Hero does the comedy scenes, stunt scenes and emotional scenes himself, thus eliminating the comedy specialists totally. After Asrani, paintal and others of their ilk, I don’t think any major comedy specialist rose in Hindi films.
The first comedy film, after the Talkie films started, was made almost immediately. It was made by Ranjit Movietone and the film was “Bhutia Mahal”-1932. We do not know about its plot or any other information , other than what is given in the HFGK. Subsequently many comedy films came. The first ever comedy film which I remember having seen was ” Ek thi Ladki ”-1949. I really enjoyed that film. Later on I have seen it several times. Being fond of comedy films, I never missed them. In the 50’s there were several films like Bhagam Bhag, New Delhi, Hum sab chor hain etc etc. During the VCR times, I saw many comedy films-some new some repeat times. Though I had stopped visiting Cinema halls since the 80’s, most newer comedy films were watched either on VCR or the TV. Film Chameli ki shaadi-1986 is one of the Top Ten comedy films I ever saw.
Anil kapoor is not my favourite actor, nor is Amrita Singh. The director Basu Chatterjee, of course, was my favourite. One of the other actors of this film-Amjad khan’s image was etched as Gabbar Singh in my mind. However, in this film he proved his versatility in doing a comic role too. Annu kapoor, pankaj Kapoor and Bharati Achrekar are known experts and they too chipped in their comedy parts.
Anil Kapoor actually started his career with acting in different languages. His first film was Hamare Tumhare-1979, his other film was a Telugu film-‘ Vansh vriksham’-1980 and a Kannada film ‘ Pallavi Anupallavi’-1983. His career took a positive turn with the film ‘ Mashal ‘-1984. I have seen his films, Mr. India-87, Tezab-88, Ram lakhan-89, Bibi No.1-99 and Nayak-2000. Not many actually, considering his large number of films in Hindi.
As far as Amrita Singh is considered, honestly, I always considered her with masculine features and her marriage with 12 years younger Saif Ali khan and her conversion was keeping her low in my eyes. I have seen only one of her films and that was Chameli ki Shaadi-1986. She has done a superb job in it. Hats off to Basu Chatterjee, who used all her typical girlish characteristics. Here is the film’s story….
Charandas is a fledgling wrestler who lives with brother Bhajandas. According to Bhajandas, Charandas should marry and start a family of his own. But Charan is hell bent on becoming a wrestler and is even ready to remain a bachelor until 40 as per the norms of Mastram. However, one day, Charan’s thoughts are challenged when he sees Chameli at Kallumal’s coal depot. He realizes that to marry her, he may have to leave Mastram’s Akhara.
Charan does so and seeks help from Advocate Harish, a close friend of his brother. Harish appreciates Charan’s love and is ready to help him. Charan dares to confess his love to Chameli. On other hand, Anita, Chameli’s best friend is also convinced of Chameli’s true love. The lover duo start meeting secretly. One day, however, the love affair is exposed when a relative of Chameli spots the duo in a restaurant.
The respective families soon take up cudgels against their wards and make it clear that they won’t allow inter-caste marriage. Chameli is kept under house arrest and her parents decide to have her marry one of their acquaintances. Charan learns of this development. Mastram is surprisingly supportive of Charan’s love. He explains that just as bachelorhood is a challenge for would-be wrestlers, a lover should not back out from the challenge posed by the world.
Mastram, along with Charan’s friends, backs the lovers to overcome the obstacles. Here, Champa calls in the help of her rogue brother Chhadam Lal aka Chhadmi against Charan. With the help of Harish and all his friends, Charan chalks out a plan to rescue Chameli from her house. As per the plan, Charan abducts Chameli from her own house, while Harish sees to it that the duo legally get married. Charan and Chameli are initially frightened, but Harish convinces them by telling them that as long as people do not dare to marry outside the caste like them, Indians will never be truly united.
Meanwhile, on learning that Chameli is missing, her parents lodge a complaint against Charan. They proceed to the place where Charan and Chameli are going to get married. Meanwhile, Bhajandas also comes with his men to disrupt the marriage. Both the parties have arrived late, as Charandas and Chameli are legally husband and wife now. They vent their ire on Harish, who according to them is responsible for corrupting the duo. Harish takes Kallumal aside and explains that if the marriage is permitted by him, he will garner votes of both the castes in the election because his son in law is the leader of all the young people and also has support from the akhadas.
Convinced by the argument of Harish, Kallumal relents because of being enticed by the illusion of winning the local election. Similarly, Harish tells Bhajandas that an influential Kallumal is sure to win the elections. If Bhajandas accepts the marriage, he will get special perks for his coal business thanks to Kallumal. Besides, he will get coal and cement at a subsidized rate from Kallumal. Bhajandas becomes greedy and relents. In the end, Chameli and Charandas are united with the blessing from both the parties.
I sometimes see the comedy scene videos of this film on YouTube and get myself cheered up. My most favourite scene is when Anil, Amrita and Komal toton a big Hotel for a date. I have seen this video so many times, that I have learnt that YouTube has decided to ban me from seeing it anymore ! Now that the name of Komal has come up here, how many of us know anything about this lovely looking dance expert who was also known as ” Rupini ” ? Here is some information about her which will surprise the readers, I am sure.
Komal Mahuvakar was born in Mumbai in a well educated family. Her father was a Lawyer and mother a famous Dietician, attached to big Hospitals like Leelavati, Breach Candy and Jaslok. While schooling, she learnt classical dancing. She was accidentally spotted by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and he met her parents. He offered Child roles to her in films like Mili-1975, Kotwal Saab-1977 and Khoobsurat-1980. She also worked in films like Des pardes-78 and Saanch ko aanch nahin-1979. She did her first film as a Heroine -Payal ki Jhankaar-1980.
After this she took a new name “RUPINI ” and went Southwards. We know many south indian actresses like Rekha, Hema Malini, Padmini, Shri Devi etc, who made a name in Hindi films. But we do not know much about Bombay girls going south and making a name for themselves. Komal Mahuvakar aka ‘ Rupini’ worked in 35 Tamil films, 10 Kannada films, 5 Malayalam films and 2 Telugu films. She also worked in 19 Hindi films upto 1989. Rest of the time, she was busy working in the South.
She left films in 1996. She married Mr. Raina, a successful Businessman, having a big Bungalow in Chembur, Mumbai. They have 1 daughter – Anisha. Komal and her husband have opened a big Heart Hospital in Chembur. She also started Dance classes for aspirants. presently she is leading an active life in Mumbai.
In the beginning of Talkie films, most heroes had to sing their songs themselves and it was a troublesome job for the Music Directors to make the non-singer hero sing a song as per their tune. There were some stars who knew or had the singing skill, like actor Surendra (152 songs in 40 films), with whom it was no problem. When the playback system came into full swing in the early 1940’s, the Music Directors heaved a sigh of relief. Actually, Naushad is on record having said ” it was tedious hard work to get the non-singer actors to sing a song. Playback has freed us from this torture !” Thereafter everything seemed to be in order. Actors acted and singers gave them playback.
Then at the end of the 40’s Raj kapoor sang 3 songs for himself in 3 films. He was of course a trained singer, but it started a different trend. His brother Shammi kapoor sang 1 song in his film-Jeewan Jyoti-1953. His younger brother Shashi kapoor sang 2 songs in 2 of his films. Both were non singers. The next generation saw many more actors singing their own songs. This was the time when Actors ruled the industry. The MDs or producers had no guts to say No to them.
Akshay Kumar sang 6 songs in 6 films.
Shatrughna Sinha sang 9 songs in 9 films.
Amir Khan sang 13 songs in 10 films.
Shahrukh khan sang 10 songs in 10 films.
Above all, can you imagine, the Superstar Amitabh Bachchan has sung 64 songs in 44 films !!! (all stats from muVyz).
None of these actors were trained singers. No wonder Anil kapoor also wanted to sing in his own films. He has sung 4 songs in 4 films. His first song was in Chameli ki Shaadi-1986. The others were from Andaz-94, Hamara dil aapke paas hai-2000 and tashan-2008. I read somewhere that Anil approached the MD Kalyanji-Anand ji and requested them for a song in this film. When they agreed, he cautioned them that it was his first time and that they should make it very simple to sing. As a way out, a Title song was created. He did quite a good job of it with hard work during rehearsals and the song was passed in the first take of recording itself !
Today’s song has a lilting, simple but haunting tune. Anil Kapoor sang it nicely. Enjoy his Debut song…

Today’s song is from the landmark film ‘Amar Jyoti’ (1936), made by the Prabhat Film company, Poona. It was directed by V Shantaram. It was photographed by his elder brother V Avadhoot and the music was by Master Krishnarao Phulambrikar. All the songs were written by Pandit Narottam Vyas. Today’s song is sung by Vasanti and chorus. The song is also used as a background song few times in the movie since it conveys the essence of the film’s theme- fight against injustice.

Today, 6th July, is the remembrance day of music director Sardul Kwaatra, who passed away this day in 2005. Four years ago, on this occasion, I have posted a detailed article on this ‘impressive and talented composer who failed to impress’ with the song “Aa Gaye Aa Gaye Aa Gaye”.

As I write out this post today, I have strong emotions attached to it.
It is a huge honour for me to write this post. I have to thank Atul for giving me the opportunity to do so.
Just a few days ago, Atul sent me an e-mail asking me if I could do a write-up for Kishore Kumar’s 1000th song on this blog. And of course, I immediately mailed back “Sure”. I wouldn’t miss this opportunity – it is indeed a very special occasion and a huge honour for me.
