Not being a speaker of Hindi, I know that I miss a great deal of nuance in both song and storyline in not understanding the lyrics to Hindi film songs. I am sure that is the case here too, but all the same the picturization of this song is so packed with information that for once I don’t really feel that deprived. His trademark lack of subtlety is one of Manmohan Desai’s greatest gifts to non-Indian fans of Hindi cinema, as is his trademark lunacy to all of mankind. Atul is aware that this particular cabaret song and dance is one of my favorites, performed by the very lithe and graceful Faryal. It contains most of the peculiarly Indian cabaret traits that make me love them so: male background dancers, a fake Sheikh or two, a Boss lurking in silhouette, and a lively band clad in frilly outfits. (This song review is by Greta (Memsaab) who recently reviewed this movie in her blog.)

I had no idea when I first saw and heard this enchanting song a week ago that it is an integral part of Indian childhood. In the wake of my movie review, many people commented that they knew and loved the song but hadn’t known that it was a film song. Not only is the music beautiful (I’m still singing the refrain over and over), but the picturization of it is sublime. I had to rewind and watch the song two or three times before I could move on to the rest of the film.
