Hullo Atuldom

Heard this song today in the noon program of Vividh Bharati -Desh Ki Surili Dhadkan (the channel’s tagline). And immediately recalled a 2001 release which featured the off-springs of the actors from the above song. ‘Farz’ from which today’s trigger happened is 54 years old, the off-springs of the actors are themselves 44 and 40..everything seems like yesterday but all things that I mentioned are decently in the PAST. Even a movie that released in 2001 is 20 years old, ooh!!!

I am talking of “Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai” which was directed by Satish Kaushik, written by Rumi Jaffery, songs were by Sameer and Anu Malik. Its cast included Kareena Kapoor, Rinke Khanna, Tusshar Kapoor, Amrish Puri, Dalip Tahil, Alok Nath, Vrajesh Hirjee, Himani Shivpuri, Dinesh Hingoo etc.

I have not seen the movie as a whole but vaguely recall that the story revolved around a sensitive young adult Karan (Tusshar Kapoor) who frequently skips college. Despite his poor academic performance, he displays many other talents. He is clever, an excellent musician, and plays in a band. His father constantly expresses his disappointment in him which often leads to Karan having outbursts of frustration and anger. One day in a deserted street, he lays eyes on Pooja (Kareena Kapoor) for the first time and falls in love with her. Following this brief acquaintance, he looks all over for her but fails to find her. He slowly begins to lose hope in his quest, stops playing music and decides to move to another city with his uncle. While on his way there, his car breaks down, and he is forced to hitch a ride. To his amazement, he finds Pooja in the driver’s seat. As they introduce themselves, an accident occurs when a truck collides with their car, which subsequently falls into a valley. Karan and Pooja find themselves hanging from a cliff, and even though Karan manages to haul Pooja back up the steep cliff, he loses his grip and falls into the ravine.

When Pooja regains consciousness, she assumes responsibility for Karan’s death and offers to help in the search for his body. Meanwhile, Karan has survived the fall but is seriously injured and unconscious. He is found by a man who takes him to the hospital and soon after, Karan is reunited with his family. As he recovers, he reflects on how he should have confessed his love to Pooja in the few moments they were together. He also begins to focus on his education instead of his music. In time, Pooja arrives at his doorstep to apologize and offers her friendship. They become good friends and then Pooja tells Karan that she must leave for the United States for further studies. Devastated, he finally confesses his love for her. Pooja feels the same way and cannot deny her feelings for Karan, and promises that she will return to him once she completes her education. Karan agrees to patiently wait for her.

September 20th is the birthdate of Kareena Kapoor. The fifth generation of the Kapoor Khaandan, only the third girl from the clan to enter showbiz- the other two being Sanjana Kapoor (Shashi Kapoor’s daughter) and Karisma Kapoor. The younger daughter of Randhir Kapoor and Babita. A few other caps also fit her dainty head- cousin to Ranbhir Kapoor, wife of Saif Ali Khan, daughter-in-law to Sharmila Tagore. She is a recipient of 6 filmfare awards beginning with award for best debut for her role in ‘Refugee’ (2000). She is considered to be a style icon and has also competent in enacting a variety of characters as we have see in ‘Chameli’, ‘Yuva’, ‘Dev’, ‘Fida’, ‘Aitraaz’ -all in 2004, each character different from the other. She has been paired opposite most of the heroes of that period- Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgan, Fardeen Khan, Shahid Kapoor, and the Khans viz. Salman, Shahrukh, Aamir, Saif. She has also acted in a few multi-heroine movies. She says she is a huge fan of the (late) Sridevi.

With this song “Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai” (2001) makes its debut. This song is in the voices of Preethi, Pinky and Babul Supriyo. Preethi and Pinky are sisters who were very popular in the late 90s and at the turn of the millennium. I recall that a song, picturised on Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta, rendered by these sisters was very popular among school children and youngsters in that period.

Happy Birthday Bebo, I mean, Kareena.

Song-Maine koi jaadoo nahin kiya (Mujhe Kuchh Kehna Hai)(2001) Singers-Preeti, Pinky, Babul Supriyo, Lyrics-Sameer, MD-Anu Malik

Lyrics

ankhiyon ne raat kya jaadu kiya

ankhiyon ne raat kya jaadu kiya

maine koi jaadu nahin kiya
tuhi mere peechhe aaya piya
maine koi jaadu nahin kiya aa

loota loota loota mera jiya oh o o
maine koi jaadu nahin kiya
toohi mere peechhe aaya piya

shokh haseena khushbu waali
chaand bhi tujh pe marta
itni haseen hoon chaand bechara aur bhala kya karta
chaand ki baaten chaand pe chhodo
apni baat bataao

bin bole har baat samajh lo
yoon na paheli bujaao
sona sona
main hoon sona

itna kehdo o occurs
meri hona

ankhiyaan milaake toone dil ko churaaya
loota loota loota mera jiya oh o o
maine koi jaadu nahin kiya
toohi mere peechhe aaya piya
maine koi jaadu nahin kiya aa aa
tuhi mere peechhe aaya piya

maine koi jaadu nahin kiya
toohi mere peechche aaya piya

is mehfil mein mere dil mein
kisne aag lagaayi
aag lagaane waali
tujhe tadpaane waali
mujhko nazar na aayi
chham chham paayal kyun bajti hai
mujhko zara samjhaao

baat samajhni hai jo tum ko
pass mere aa jaao
chhoona chhoona bainyya gori
dil tu de de chori chori

ankhiyaan milaake tune dil ko churaaya, loota loota loota mera jiya oh o o
maine koi jaadu nahin kiya aa aa
toohi mere peechche aaya piya

ankhiyon ne raat kya jaadu kiya
maine koi jaadu nahin kiya
kya jaadu kiya
kya jaadu kiya
maine koi jaadu nahin kiya
toohi mere peechche aaya piya
maine koi jaadu nahin kiya aa aa
toohi mere peechche aaya piya
ankhiyaan milaake toone dil ko churaaya
loota loota loota mera jiya oh o o
maine koi jaadu nahin kiya

Hindi Songs in Bangla Films: 35

‘Gumnaami’ (2019) is a Bangla film with fairly good parts of dialogues in Hindi and English. The film is produced under the banner of Shri Venkatesh Films and is directed by Srijit Mukherjee. The main star cast consists of Prosenjit Chatterjee (as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and later as Gumnaami Baba), Anirban Bhattacharya (as journalist, Chandrachur Dhar), Tanushri Chakraborty (as Ronita Dhar), Surendra Rajan (as Mahatma Gandhi), Sanjay Gurubuxani (as Jawaharlal Nehru) etc. The film was released on October 2, 2019. Being a recent release, as of now, the movie is not available on video sharing platforms.

I watched the film on one of the OTT platforms. The film is not a biopic on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. It is based on later events, relating to the investigations by Mukherjee Commission, which was set up by Government of India in 1999 to probe the death of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The Commission was assigned the task to tackle the three broad theories surrounding the alleged mysteries and unanswered questions related to Netaji’s death. First, Netaji died in a plane crash while taking off from an airport in Taiwan. Second, he staged a fake plane crash to escape to Russia where he died in prison. Lastly, Netaji staged a plane crash, escaped to Russia and returned to India as a sanyasi (monk) known as ‘Bhagwan ji’ or ‘Gumnaami Baba’ who died in September 1985 in Faizabad.

Film starts with Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru advising Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, who was the then Congress President, that he should support the British Government during World War II. They also advocate non-violent methods for attaining India’s freedom from the British Rule. Netaji disagrees by saying that freedom is to be snatched from Britishers rather than demanding from them. Due to his differences with Congress High Command, he resigns from the Indian National Congress. He goes abroad to make allies with Japan and Germany who are at war with Great Britain and the Allied forces. He sets up Indian National Army with the support of Japan.

After the surrender of Japan to allied forces in Burma, Netaji shifts his forces to Singapore and then to Bangkok. He advises his forces to surrender while he with Rahman will go to Tokyo for onward escape to Soviet Union which, according to his view, would become anti-British after the war. He can then fight for India’s independence from there. While travelling to Soviet Union, Netaji’s plane catches fire and he dies after a few hours of the accident due to burn injury on August 18, 1945. He is cremated and his ashes are taken to Tokyo.

There have been many commissions and reports to inquire about the circumstances of Netaji’s death but there still remains uncertainty and the doubts have been raised in various quarters about the death of Netaji from time to time. In 1999, Government of India decides to set up the Mukherjee Commission go into the mysteries behind Netaji’s death afresh.

In 2003, a journalist, Chandrachur Dhar is given an independent assignment by his employer, Indiatimes to make a research-based study on the mystery of Netaji’s death. Chandrachur believes that all the myths surrounding Netaji’s death are hoaxes. Nevertheless, he takes up the assignment and spends much of his time in gathering evidences. During this period, his entire thinking about Netaji’s life changes. The study and research on the Netaji’s life becomes his obsession to such an extent that he neglects his personal life. His wife, Ronita feels that she is living with a husband who is unstable, crazy and unpredictable. In a fit of anger, she ransacks all the papers and documents which Chandrachur had collected in the course of his reasearch. She files for a divorce and gets it. In frustration, Chandrachur resigns his job. Instead, he forms a passionate group of his friends called ‘Mission Netaji’ to study and research to solve the mystery of Netaji’s death.

Based on extensive studies and research, Chandrachur makes presentations before the Mukherjee Commission with evidences to prove that Netaji did not die in plane crash but escaped to Russia by staging a fake plane crash. From Russia, he came to India via Tibet as a wandering monk and stayed in Lucknow. He submits 19 evidences in support of his contention.  In 2005, Mukherjee Commission presented the report to the Government of India. The Report was presented to Lok Sabha and was publicly released.

Chandrachur and his friends of ‘Mission Netaji’ have assembled in his house to read the Commission’s report. Ronita, his ex-wife has come to wish her best to Chandrachur. While Commission has come to the conclusion that Netaji has not died in the plane crash based on the various evidences including the DNA report of his remains which have been kept in Tokyo, which was identified as that of a Japanese soldier. However, due to absence of any concrete evidence, the Commission is unable to come to the conclusion whether Netaji escaped to Russia. Further, the DNA test of Gumnaami Baba did not match with that of Netaji.  The Government of India rejected the report without giving any reasons.

The rejection of the Commission’s report affected Chandrachur so much that he locks himself in a room full of the books, and documents collected over the last 3 years for his ‘Mission Netaji’. He starts burning every documents, files and books connected with his research so much so the entire room engulfs with fire. Ronita calls his friends and gets the door broken to rescue Chandrachur. The film ends with Ronita convincing Chandrachur to keep on fighting for the truth of Netaji’s death. Hence, the fight must go on until an end to the mystery.

Before I started watching this film, I did not have a very high expectation from the film because, there has been many films on the life of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Furthermore, I was one of the believers that Netaji died in the plane crash in August 1945 and the talks thereafter about the mystery of his death were all myths and conjectures. But once I completed watching the film in one sitting, I must admit that the director, Srijit Mukherjee has managed to present the film in a way which made me to rethink about the controversies surrounding Netaji’s death. This film is a class by itself putting it on a different pedestal.

Prosenjit Chatterjee, in the role of Netaji as well as Gumnaami Baba has given an excellent performance which was a pleasant surprise for me as most of his roles in Bangla films are that of a romantic hero. His performance as a Gumnaami Baba looks so real that for once, I started feeling that Gumnaami Baba could really be Netaji in disguise. As Netaji, almost all of his dialogues are in Hindi and English. It is only when he turns to act as Gumnaami Baba, his dialogues are in Bangla.

Another roll of honor in the film goes to Anirban Bhattacharya, who in the role of Chandrachur Dhar, has given the superb performance as a journalist. His submissions to the Mukherjee Commission and the crazy reactions to the news that the Commission’s reports have been rejected by the Government are his top-most performances in the film. In fact, he has an equal presence in the film if not more than Prosenjit Chatterjee.

The film is a mix of black & white and colour. The scenes involving Netaji in pre-1945 period are in black & white while scenes representing Gumnaami Baba, Chandrachur Dhar, the journalist and the proceedings of the Mukherjee Commission are in colour. The film has dialogues in Bangla, Hindi, English and few dialogues in Japanese. These combinations in the film give a feel of a period atmosphere as well as the natural proceedings of the story in the film.

While on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, it is incidental and interesting to note that today, July 23rd,is the Remembrance Day of one of Netaji’s closest aides who led  INA’s Women Wing named the Rani Jhansi Regiment. She is Captain (Dr) Lakshmi Sehgal (24/20/1914 – 23/07/2012) of INA born as Lakshmi Swaminathan. She had barely completed her MBBS and arrived in Singapore, where she met with Netaji and got immersed in the Azad Hind movement.

During the surrender of Singapore by British to the Japanese, Dr Lakshmi helped heal the wounded soldiers of prisoners of war, many of whom were Indians. They desired to form the Azad Hind Fauj. After the arrival of Netaji in Singapore in July 1943, Dr. Lakshmi met Netaji who was keen to take women into INA. Thus she became Captain Lakshmi Swaminathan of Rani Jhansi Regiment of INA.

In Burma operations, INA joined Japanese in December 1944 but by March 1945, Japanese were on the losing ground. INA decided to beat a retreat from Burma. While crossing into Imphal, Captain Lakshmi was arrested in Burma by the British Forces and held in prison in Burma until March 1946 when she was sent to Delhi for trials as a war criminal. However, on the eve of India getting independence,  Captain Sehgal and many of the INA facing trials were set free.

In March 1947, Captain Lakshmi married Prem Kumar Sehgal and shifted to Kanpur. She continued her medical practice in Kanpur. She became a Rajya Sabha member in 1971. During the Bangla Desh crisis in 1971, she set up relief and medical camps for refugees from East Pakistan in Kolkata. During the Bhopal gas tragedy in December 1984, she led a medical team to look after those affected by the gas. She was active as a medical practitioner until the age of 92.

‘Gumnaami’ (2019) has 5 songs of which 3 are in Hindi. All songs have been used in the film as background songs. I am presenting “Shubh Sukh Chain Ki Barkha Barse” rendered by Babul Supriyo and chorus. There is an interesting history behind this song.

After the establishment of the provisional Government in exile of INA in 1943, Netaji decided to have a National Anthem for his Government. He himself selected Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s “Jan Gan Man Adhinayak Jai He” and asked Mumtaz Hussain and Colonel Abid Hussain Saffarani of INA to translate it into Hindustani so that it becomes easy to understand the meaning to all. He selected Captain Ram Singh Thakur to composed in the martial music so that the listeners would be awaken. It is significant to note that on the day of India’s independence on August 15, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru unfurled the Tricolour on the ramparts of the Red Fort after which Captain Ram Singh Thakur of INA conducted the orchestra with his musicians, playing the tune of the National Anthem of INA.

In the film, this song appears towards the end of the film, incorporating the flashback of what has happened in the life of Netaji from 1940-45 and the efforts made by the journalist to unlock the mystery of Netaji’s death. The credit title of the film gives credit to Mumtaz Hussain and Colonel Abid Hussain Saffarani as lyricists and the music to Captain Ram Singh Thakur. However, I feel that Rabindranath Tagore should also get the credit since the tune was originally composed by him for “Jan Gan Man Adhinayak Jai He”. The audio clip of the song has one extra stanza.

It is the song which reminds us with moist eyes, the fond memory of Netaji of his sacrifice for the freedom of the motherland.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 12
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

What we have today is a repeat song of a very familiar and a very wonderful hit of its time, and yes, an all time favorite that seems to carry a timeless appeal for people in love. And as is shown on screen, people in love – of all ages. This reuse has some very interesting circumstances, mostly well evident in the picturization itself.

The original song is from the hit film ‘Khel Khel Mein’ from 1975. The lead pair in that film is Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, who were famously in love off the celluloid also. They were referred to as the ‘Love Birds’ of the Hindi cinema. Their affair culminated in their tying the proverbial matrimonial knot in 1980. ‘Khel Khel Mein’ was possibly their second film together, having worked together earlier for the first time together, in ‘Zehreela Insaan’ in 1974. The original song is performed on screen by this pair, playing roles of college students in love, and in search of fun and adventure through petty pranks. On screen, the scenario is that both are drunk, and have got it into their minds to announce their love for each other to the world through this song. The original song is written by Gulshan Baawra and the music is by RD Burman.

The repeat song is from the 2005 film – ‘Pyaar Mein Twist’. The lead roles in this film are played by Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia. Seeing this pair on screen brought back memories of many a story, all the way back from three decades ago.

Rewind back to 1973. Rishi and Dimple make their individual debuts as lead players in ‘Bobby’, a teen romance that straddles two diverse strata of the society as well as religious affiliations. The film was the big hit of 1973, that revived the fortunes of RK banner after the box office debacle of ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970). The release of this film was preceded, and accompanied by a ton of controversies that had the pulp press working overtime for months on end. An uncanny facial resemblance (at that point in time) between Dimple and Nargis of ‘Barsaat’ (1949), created a havoc laden rumor tornado – that Dimple is actually Raj Kapoor’s daughter from his alleged affair with Nargis when the two were a popular and fantastic pair on screen, and off it, in late 1940s to mid 1950s. Of course the rumor was really preposterous; given the dates and timelines of years. But the smut press was really having a great time. Then another storm of rumor was thrown into this mix – that of an off screen affair between Rishi and Dimple. This was even more flabbergasting – as evidenced by the fact that Rishi – fondly called Chintu Baba, would soon be entangled with Neetu Singh, in a relationship that has lasted a life time. The rumor simply refused to die for weeks on end, despite strong denial statements by all parties concerned.

And then, even before the film ‘Bobby’ was formally released, there came another thunderous event that really complicated the already horrendous mess. Totally out of the blue, the marriage of Rajesh Khanna and Dimple Kapadia was announced. Rajesh Khanna was riding a great popularity wave as the superstar of the decade. The decision raised many an eyebrow, all the way to the sky, given that Rajesh Khanna was already in an almost live-in relationship with the small time actress Anju Mahendru. Couple that with the immediate announcement of Dimple’s retirement from the film industry. Goodness, the amount of dirty gossip raised by all these eventualities, was really getting out of hand. To a right thinking person, all the gossip was incredulous and unbelievable, at that time. It would serve no purpose to regurgitate it. And then, in some months’ time, as the controversies appeared to have lived out their usefulness, the box office success of ‘Bobby’ created another gossip storm – that all the controversies and their public discourse associated with Dimple – all the rumor rot was just a marketing ploy to create a box office success for ‘Bobby’. It took almost a year for the storm to die down.

Fast forward now to 1982. The long brewing trouble in the Rajesh-Dimple marriage came to a head, with Dimple leaving the matrimonial home with her two daughters, never to return again. After a cooling period of a year or so, the news emerged about the much awaited return of Dimple to the films. One of the first films that she signed up for was ‘Saagar’ (1985), opposite to Rishi Kapoor once again. The film was delayed by almost a year – in normal course it would have hit the theatres in 1984. Other films starring Dimple got released earlier.

Over the years, this pair has appeared on screen together with an infrequent regularity – ‘Allah Rakha’ in 1986, then on to ‘Ajooba’ and ‘Ranbhoomi’ in 1991. Then in 2005, after another gap of 14 years, came ‘Pyaar Mein Twist’, the film under discussion today. The two actors have appeared together in two more films since then – ‘Luck By Chance’ in 2009 and then ‘Patiala House’ in 2011.

‘Pyaar Mein Twist’ is a romantic comedy underlining a serious subject of mature age romance between two single parents, Yash (role played by Rishi Kapoor) and Sheetal (role played by Dimple Kapadia), both having a flourishing household each of them is responsible for. And yet, Cupid does not spare them from romantic entanglement, leading to a major social upset in the two families. However, with the support of a benevolent aunt (Toshi Auntie – role played by Farida Jalaal) and a supporting future son-in-law (Sanju – role played by Sameer Dattani), all ends well for all parties concerned. The ending sequence shows Yash performing the kanyadaan ceremony at the wedding of Sheetal’s daughter, topped off with a happy smiling family group photo shoot.

The reused song is actually not the real original. It has been re-recorded in different voices for the purpose of this film. It is a duet – but now it is a male-male duet. The original is sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle. The repeat version is sung by Babul Supriyo and Vinod Rathod. On screen, it is performed by Yash and his childhood friend Khanna (role played by Satish Shah). The scene is a marriage anniversary party of Khanna. Yash, after a few pegs down his belt, decides to make a public proclamation of his love for Sheetal – much to her visible surprise and suppressed delight.

One query for the more knowledgeable readers – please help to identify the lady in the red saaree standing next to Dimple in this song. She plays the role of Satish Shah’s wife in this film. I have seen her in a couple of other contemporaneous films, but cannot recall her name.

The song starts off with the opening lines of another iconic hit of Rishi Kapoor – the song “Meri Umar Ke Naujawaanon. . . – To Gaao Om Shanti Om”, in his own voice, and then it leads into the lines “Khullam Khulla. . .”. Of the original three stanza song, only two stanzas have been used in repeat version.

So check out this modern day avataar of an iconic song from the 1970s, which is performed on screen by the same actor – thirty years apart. This must be a record of sorts, after considering WM Khan’s performance of the primeval “De De Khuda Ke Naam Pe. . .” in the three versions of the film ‘Alam Ara’ – 1931, 1956 and 1973.

Listen and enjoy.

dil hi dil me to ghabra rahe hain
lagta hai dono padosi hain wo
rishta hi aisa hai jaane bhi do
hum wo karenge dil jo kahe
hum ko zamaane se kya

jamaa de

khullam khulla pyaar karenge hum dono
is duniya se nahin darenge hum dono

oye kitta

one one one one
one more time

hey
bolo na
pyaar ka hai ye dushman zamaana
arrey sun
haan bataa
sab ko milta nahin ye khazaana
hey
bolo na
pyaar ka hai ye dushman zamaana
ae hey hey sun
haan bataa
sabko milta nahi ye khazaana
arrey jinko aji ye khazaana miley
dekh dekh unko ye duniya jaley
hum wo karenge dil jo kahe
hum ko zamaane se kya

khullam khulla pyaar karenge hum dono
is duniya se nahin darenge hum dono

watch it watch it now

pyaar hum karte hai chori nahin
mil gaye dil jora jori nahin
hum wo karenge jo dil kahe
hum ko zamaane se kya

jamaa de

khullam khulla pyaar karenge hum dono

watch it watch it now

is duniya se nahin darenge hum dono

oye kitta

khullam khulla pyaar karenge hum dono

that’s right

is duniya se nahin darenge hum dono

jamaa de

khullam khulla pyaar karenge hum dono. . .
