We notice that Lata Mangeshkar had crossed 3000 songs in Hindi movies during this year 1967. She became the first playback singer to achieve this feat in HFM. It took her two decades to reach this mark.
It can be seen from the table of 1967 that Lata Mangeshkar sang 106 songs in movies released in 1967. It was the second lowest figure in a year for her since 1948.
As many as 92 of these 106 songs have already been covered in the blog. Out of 44 movies of 1967 where Lata Mangeshkar sang, all Lata Mangeshkar songs of 35 movies are already covered. So we only have 14 Lata songs belonging to 9 movies of 1967 that are not yet covered in the blog.
Alphabetically the first such movie that offers us Lata Mangeshkar songs to discuss is “Arabian Nights”(1967). Unfortunately this song could not be located by me till now and it does not seem to be available on line.
The next movie that offers us Lata Mangeshkar songs to discuss is “Duniya Naachegi”(1967). This movie was directed by K Parvez for Gay Films, Bombay. This “social” movie had Kishore Kumar, Kumkum, Mukri, Bhagan, Ifthikar, Babu Raje, arun Irani etc in it.
HFGK lists five songs for this movie but does not mention any singers. Nevertheless, one song from this movie has been covered and that song turned out to be a Kishore Kumar solo.
It turns out that the movie has one Lata Mangeshkar solo in it as well.
Here is the Lata Mangeshkar solo song from “Duniya Naachegi”(1967). Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
HFGK mentions two lyricists for the movie namely Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and Majrooh Sultanpuri. But the distribution of songs among them is not mentioned in HFGK. However, Lata Geetkosh vol VI (compiled by Mr Snehashish Chatterjee) mentions this song as penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
The song is lip synced by Kumkum. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the other actors seen in the picturisation.
This extremely hummable song has a tune that is Lata Mangeshkar’s favorite and it is inspired by a folk song of Lata Mangeshkar’s nanihaal (mother’s place). Lata Mangeshkar is so fond of this song that she got quite a few songs recorded in Hindi movies based on this tune. One such song is Tu na aaya aur hone lagi shaam re from “Asha”(1957). It as peneed by Rajinder Krishan and composed by C Ramchandra. Meri patli kamar lambe baal re from “Mere Laal”(1966) has the same tune. It is penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri and it is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
So this “Duniya Naachegi”(1967) song is by the same musical team as “Mere Lal”(1966).
Unlike the above two songs, the influence of that folk song is more subtle, but it is unmistakably there.
So here is a Lata song from 1967. It is one of those few songs whose singer is not mentioned in HFGK. So when the song got located, it turned out to be a pleasant discovery that it was a Lata Mangeshkar song.
Song-Bhool gaye sainyya puraani mulaqaat (Duniya Naachegi)(1967) Lata Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics
ek din aise hi baanh meri thhaami thhi
yaad hai humko wo taaro bhri raat haay haay haay
bhool gaye sainya puraani mulaakaat
bhool gaye sainya puraani mulaakaat
ek din aise hi banh meri thhaami thi
yaad hai humko wo taaron bhri raat haay haay haay
bhool gaye sainya purani mulaakaat
bhool gaye sainya purani mulaakaat
kaahe ko phir bane jaane tamnna
chup ho khade kuch kahna na sunna
ho jaane pahchane se bante ho anjaane se
tumko jaanen hum apna aur ho tum begaane se
pyaar yaahi hai to chhodo mera haath
pyaar yahi hai to chhodo mera haath haay haay haay
bhool gaye saiya puraani mulaakaat
bhool gaye saiya puraani mulaakaat
dekhe na tu par aankhon mein teri
thhodi si hai wohi tasweer meri
haath mein hai halka halka rang mere hi aanchal ka
ab tak mukhde par hai daag in nainon ke kaajal ka
yaad nahin tumko hai ye bhi koi baat
yaad nahin tumko hai ye bhi koi baat haay haay haay
bhool gaye sainya puraani mulaakaat
bhool gaye sainya puraani mulaakaat
tera chalan teri ghaaten bedardi
wo kaise ikraar kare
yaad rahe kya usko jo roz naya ek pyaar kare
kya kahoon kaisi hai mardon ki jaat
kya kahoon kaisi hai mardo ki jaat haay haay haay
bhul gaye sainya puraani mulaakaat
bhul gaye sainya puraani mulaakaat
ek din aise hi banh meri thami thi
yaad hai humko wo taaron bhari raat haay haay haay
bhool gaye sainya puraani mulaakaat
bhool gaye sainya puraani mulaakaat

In this article, I am discussing a classical dancer for whom the dancing was her passion, be it in the films or on stages. Her face was familiar to me as I had watched some of her films long back. But at that time, I did not evince interest in knowing her name. It was only after I joined the Blog in 2011 that I came to know her identity through none other than our own Prakashchandra ji, the veteran of our Blog in identifying the lesser known film artists with a high success rate. The name of the dancer is Rani.
Even after knowing her name, I still did not evince keen interest in knowing Rani’s background and the filmography. Like many lesser known film artists who worked in a few films and then went into the oblivion, I thought that Rani was one among them. But when I watched many Hindi film songs while writing my last four articles on the Hindi film dancers. I was surprised to note that Rani had danced with well known Hindi film dancers like Helen, Kumkum, Ragini, Madhumati, Bela Bose etc apart from her solo dances. This gave me an impression that Rani may have worked in more Hindi films than what her filmography on the various on-line sources indicated. After collating the data of her films from various sources and watching her dances in the films in case of doubts, I have come to a tentative figure of 54 films in which Rani had danced.
I was not sure about getting much of Rani’s background profile. However, recently, Tabassum who had worked with Rani in about half a dozen films in the 1960s, has posted a video ‘Dancer Rani – A Life Full Of Struggles’ on her Channel ‘Tabassum Talkies’. After watching the video, I felt very sad for Rani as in her later years, she has struggled a lot for her basic necessity of life. The Almighty has not been kind to her as now she is handicapped. It is really a pathetic situation for a dancer who used to say that dancing on the stage was like a worship for her and dancing in the films was means of her sustenance;
The following information has been paraphrased based on ‘Tabassum Talkies’ on Rani.
Rani (real name: Munawwar Sultana) was born in July 27, 1942 in Kolkata to Mohammed Gafoor Khan and Noorjahan Begum. She was adopted by her father’s close friend, Mohshin Khan who had no children. Since Rani was interested in dancing, her adopted father put her for training in Kathak under the tutelage of Ram Narayan Mishra and Krishna Maharaj of Lucknow Gharana.
At the age of 13, Rani started her filmy career in Bangla films. In 1960, her adopted father brought her to Mumbai to make her the Hindi film heroine. Rani flatly refused to work in Hindi films as an actor – not even in supporting roles as she was very passionate about dancing. So, she started her Hindi film career as a dancer in ‘Nai Maa’ (1960). Thereafter she got regular dancing numbers in many Hindi films mainly during 1963-69. In the 1970s, Rani’s dancing career went in downward mode and by the end of 1970s, she was almost unemployed.
During her active period of Hindi film journey, whatever she had earned was passed on to her adopted father to look after a large number of relatives who depended on her earnings. But in this milieu, a thought never occurred to her that she needed to save money for later period in her life when her dancing career in the films would come to a close. Due to failure of her love affairs when she was in Kolkata, she had decided to remain unmarried.
With almost nothing left for her subsistence, she met her former dancer colleague and the choreographer, Gopikrishna who took her as his Assistant Choreographer at a salary sufficient to take care of her minimum requirements.
As they say, when chips are down, one gets to face more problems. One day, Rani suddenly felt that her legs have lost stamina and she can no longer dance. She started using a walking stick and with this, her days of dancing were over. But her old age woes were not yet over. While catching a bus, she lost balance and fell, badly injuring her legs. She was no longer able to walk even with a stick. Instead, she now requires a walker.
As Rani was handicapped and there was no one to look after her, she got herself admitted to a charitable old age home at the outskirt of Mumbai. Presently, she is 78 years old and is an inmate of an old age home.
Rani had a younger sister, Rashida Khatoon who was a qawwali singer. She got married to Yasuf Azad Qawwal.
As I mentioned earlier, I have listed around 55 films in which Rani had danced. Some of the major films she worked were ‘Maaya’ (1961), ‘Sautela Bhai’ (1962), ‘Mere Mehboob’ (1963), ‘Dooj Ka Chaand’ (1964), ‘Ganga Ki Lahren’ (1964), ‘Jaanwar’ (1965), ‘Dil Diya Dard Liya’ (1966), ‘Sangarsh’ (1968), ‘Sambandh’ (1969), ‘Heer Ranjha’ (1970), ‘Loafer’ (1972), ‘Pathar Aur Paayal’ (1974), ‘Ham Kisi Se Kam Nahi’ (1977) etc. Most of her other films were of B grade category in the genres of stunt, action and costumes.
Rani also worked as Assistant Choreographer to Gopikrishan in ‘Khubsoorat’ (1980), ‘Aanchal’ (1980) and ‘Kudarat’ (1981).
From our Blog, I could track down 20 songs of which 5 songs are yet to be tagged to Rani. In addition, at least 4 songs, the video clips of which are available are yet to be covered on the Blog. I am hopeful that some more songs would be found on video sharing platforms. However, there are some films of Rani which are not traceable. To that extent, her dance numbers in these films are as good as lost for the present.
I am presenting Rani’s dance song, ‘bairu bichuaa bada dukh de o ram’ from ‘Ganga Ki Lahren’ (1964). This is a classical raag-based song picturised on kathak trained dancers, Kumkum and Rani. Lata Mangeshkar sings for both the dancers. The song is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri which is set to music by Chitragupt. The end of the song is followed by a dance competition between the two dancers of about one-minute duration.
This is the 6th song (out of 8) of ‘Ganga Ki Lahren’ (1964) to appear on the Blog.

In my last article, I had discussed playback singer and actor Shyam Kumar, who has acted in many Hindi films but remained unidentified for most of the Hindi film audience. In this write-up, I am presenting one more such actor who has made us to notice him in many films but remained unsung because he did very small roles in most of the films in which he got opportunity to act – mostly as a sidekick, a henchman, a doctor, barman, hotel manager etc. Though his roles in most of the films have been very brief say, not be more than 5 minutes duration but whatever he did as an actor in varied roles, it was noticeable to the filmy audience. The actor is Keshav Rana whose face in the films may be familiar to many cine audience but may not be known by his name to them.
I had seen Keshav Rana in some of the films in the late 60s and early 70s during which I was active in watching films almost every week-end but I was not aware of his name. His acting as a police inspector in ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’ (1972) in a comical situation has still remained in my memory. I did not know his name until I started collecting the pictures of personalities connected with Hindi films during the last 5-6 years. It was a co-incidence that his image propped up when I was searching for something else. And the image of Keshav Rana emerged as a scene from a film ‘Dillagi’ (1966). That was the beginning of my work to identify him in many more films.
Not much information about the early life of Keshav Rana is available on-line. The only information I know from IMDb is that his full name is Keshav Singh Rana and he belongs to Faizabad in UP. From his filmography, it appears that he came to Mumbai to join the film industry in the later half of 1950s. His first film as an actor was ‘Anjaan’ (1956). His most active years was 1960s and 1970s when he worked in around 50 and 70 films, respectively. On a rough count, Keshav Rana must have worked in around 130 films during 1956-1986.
During the last fortnight, I have seen some important films with Keshav Rana’s scenes under prominent banners like that of Shakti Samanta, Arjun Hingorani, Ramesh Sippy, J Omprakash, BR Chopra, Prakash Mehra etc. He did a variety of roles in the films but in most of the films, he was moslty typecast as Police Inspector/Commissioner, Doctor, Hotel Manager, Barman, a patron of mujra dances etc. In others films, he mostly performed roles in negative shades and sidekicks to the main actors. Of the films of Keshav Rana, I watched, the only film in which he got a relatively longish role of Puran Bahadur in negative shade of a blackmailer was in ‘Dillagi’ (1966).
Keshav Rana excels in negative roles with a smiling face. But behind his smiling face lies his evil and manipulative designs to blackmail his victims. In this role, he generally avoids fighting and bloodbath in most of his films. He leaves these parts to other henchmen. For example, in films like ‘Dillagi’(1966) and ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’ (1978), he takes out his Rampuri knife but never uses it. Instead, he entrusts his fellow henchmen to fight it out. His light comical roles as a police inspector in ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’ (1972) with Hema Malini (as Geeta) and as a barman in ‘Shaan’ (1980) with Amitabh Bachchan have been well appreciated.
I have uploaded an audio clip incorporating along with the song, the screen shots of scenes in which Keshav Rana appears in some of his important films. Check out the audio link below.
‘Qatl’ (1986) appears to be Keshav Rana’s last film after which he did not act in any film. I could not get any information as to what he did thereafter.
Keshav Rana had played a small role of a patron of a kotha dancer in ‘Ganga Maiya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo’ (1962), the first Bhojpuri film. The film was directed by Kundan Kumar. The star cast included Kumkum, Ashim Kumar, Nazir Hussain, Tiwari, Bhagwan Sinha, Helen, Leela Mishra, Kumari Khanna (Padma Khanna) etc. The story, screen-play and dialogues were written by Nazir Hussain. Songs were written by Shailendra which were set to music by Chitrgupt.
I am presenting the song ‘Luk Chhip Badra Mein Chamke Jaise Chanwa’ from the first Bhojpuri film rendered by Lata Mangeshkar and picturised on Kumkum who is dancing for the patron, Keshav Rana.
Listening to the song in audio clip gives a feel of the dance in a nautanki (folk theatre) in the rural Bhojpuri region. And why not? Both Shailendra and Chitragupt hail from Bhojpur region of Bihar.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Hatimtai ki Beti’ (1955).
When I was very young and had just started taking interest in reading books and seeing films, I always felt that HATIMTAI is a girl’s name. This was because “Tai” in Marathi, means Didi in Hindi. It was only after I read the book “Arabian Night stories”, that I was surprised that Hatimtai was a Male name !
According to Wiki, Hatim-Al-Tai or Hatim-Al-Taeei was a 6th century Arabian Christian poet. He was adventurous and very generous. His name is mentioned in Arabian Night stories too. It seems a beautiful princess Husn Bano asked 7 questions and declared that she will marry only to whosoever answers these questions. A neighbouring king fell into her love and Hatimtai helped him find all the 7 answers. Hatim of Arabia was a Christian and a contemporary of prophet Mohammed, but they never met. He was famous for his generosity, wisdom, courage and hospitality. Later his son was converted to Islam.
Hatimtai’s story has always attracted the film makers from the silent movie times. There were 4 silent films titled “Hatimtai”. Then in 1933,first Talkie film ‘Hatimtai’ was made in 4 parts, each a separate full movie. ‘Son of Hatimtai’ was made twice and ‘Hatimtai ki beti’was also made twice. Hatimtai films had plenty of magic, adventure, dance and drama with humour. Among ” C” grade films, Hatimtai films were very popular. ‘Hatimtai ki Beti’was made in 1940 and 1955,both the films were directed by Nanubhai Vakil. In the 1940 film Sarojini,Indurani,Anil kumar etc were in the cast. That film was produced very lavishly by Sagar Movietone. In those days it cost them Rs. 1 Lakh 25 thousand rupees. The outdoor shooting was done in Agra and Fatehpur Shikri.
Hatimtai-55 was a partly coloured film. This was a period when the coloured films were still a novelty and not many films were made in colour. In fact most films were still in Black and White only. Today, after almost 65 years, when we see the old Black and White films, we get excited and feel that how soothing these films were to the eyes. The beauty of the Heroines seems more impressive. When one sees films of Madhubala in B/W and in Colour, one gets a feeling that B/W was much better. Of course, Nostalgia has a greater role in such feelings, I agree.
The film was made by Vakil Productions. Naturally the producer and Director was Nanubhai Vakil-the owner. Songs were written by Shevan Rizvi, except for just one song by Kaifi Azmi. The music was given by Nanubhai’s favourite MD- A R Qureshi who had given music to 18 films of Nanubhai vakil. Music director A.R. Qureshi (full name: Allah Rakha Qureshi , born April 29, 1919 in Phagal, in the Jammu district in Jammu and Kashmir state) was also a well-known tabla player and gave many performances on All-India Radio. He had left home as a teenager to study tabla with Mian Qadir Bakshi and entered films in 1943, sometimes billed as Allah Rakha. Among the the fantasy films he worked on are Flying Man (1947), Jadui Angoothi (1948), Sakhi Hatim(1955), Noor Mahal (1954), Hatimtai Ki Beti (1955), and Alladin Leila(1957). He gave music to 18 films, directed by Nanubhai Vakil.
In all he gave music to 40 films from 1943 to 1964. He even sang 14 songs in 7 films.
Shortly after Sim Sim Marjina in 1958, he left films ( except one film Idd ka chaand-64) and turned to classical music, touring with the famous Sitar Maestro Ravi Shankar throughout the 1960s and 70s as well as other musicians. In 1968 he collaborated with American jazz musician Buddy Rich, creating the album Rich a la Rakha.
He started the Alla Rakha Institute of Music in Bombay in 1985. His three sons, Zakir Hussain, Fazal Qureshi, and Taufiq Qureshi, are all tabla players.
A.R. Qureshi died on February 3, 2000.
For this film he had Damodar Sharma as his assistant. Sharma was one of the well known Music Directors of the early era films. Among the old era MDs, Damodar Sharma was different, in the sense that his songs were always unlike those of his contemporaries. When you hear his songs, you will notice that difference. From 1934 to 1948, he gave music to just 41 films. All his films were C grade films made by Paramount, Liberty, Ramnik Productions, Mohan Pictures and others. After 1948, he stopped getting films, so he worked as assistant to MD A.R.Qureshi till 1964.
Film Hatimtai ki Beti-55 had a cast of Chitra, Mahipal, Daljit, Krishnakumari, Kamal, Kammo, Kumkum, Helan, Heera Sawant Tun Tun, Maruti, Sundar, kesari, Niranjan Sharma, W M Khan etc. There were 4 Guest artistes also, including Al Nasir and Heeralal. With 5 specialist Dancers and 2 Heroines also dancing, the film had eye pleasing dances and good music too.
Actress Krishnakumari’s name appears here. She acted more in Stunt and costume films than social films. Krishna Kumari (not to be confused with the 1930s actress of the same name nor the south Indian actress T. Krishna Kumari) was born Rajinder Kaur in Rawalpindi, Punjab state (now part of Pakistan) on October 3, 1934. Occasionally playing the heroine in B-grade films including Vanraj (1952), Gorilla (1953) Black Rider (1960) State Express(1961) and Khush Naseeb (1964) she is probably much better known as a temptress or villain in the likes of Baghdad Ka Jadu (1956), Zimbo(1958), Police Station (1959), Lady of the Lake (1960), Jadoo Mahal(1962) or dozens of similar action, horror and fantasy films.
Her debut came in the film Bela-1947. Then she got film Girls School (1949), which also featured newcomers Geeta Bali and Shashikala, after which she appeared in Naao, which actually ended up in theatres first, releasing in 1948. Krishna Kumari’s career lasted 20 years, and during that time she managed to chalk up an impressive amount of credits, even if most of the pictures she made were not considered important by critics. She acted in 118 films.
The story of this film was………
HATIM TAI KI BETI-1955 was a costume drama set in the Arabian style mode. Produced by Nanubhai Vakil through his Vakil productions,it was directed by Nanubhai himself. The MD was A R Qureshi (Alla Rakha Qureshi, the famous Tabla player and father of Zakir Hussain, tabla maestro). His asst. was Damodar Sharma- in the 30s and 40s,he himself was a well known composer. The lyrics were by Shevan Rizvi( 8 songs) and Kaifi Azmi (2 songs).
It is imagined ( it is declared just before the credits) that Hatimtai had 2 daughters. The elder is Jahanara, the queen of Shahbad and the younger is Roshanara, who is known for feeding the poor and the needy always. The Shaitan(Devil ) and his assistant Badi (बदी) can not tolerate Roshan’s goodness. They come and poison the food she distributes. All,including the queen, become sick. However due to her goodness Imaan and Neki come and all recover. Then the Devil’s team poisons Jahanara’s mind and she imprisons Roshanara.
Meanwhile the neighbouring king of Turin proposes marriage of his elder son Salim with Roshan, but Jahanara wants to marry him. At the same time Salim’s younger brother Aslam also wants to marry Roshan, so Salim withdraws and Aslam is married to Jahanara( as Roshan). On the wedding night truth is revealed. Aslam is imprisoned but rescued by his friends.
Now Salim comes and is imprisoned by Jahanara. Aslam comes with army and rescues Salim and imprisons Jahanara. Roshanara comes and begs for pardon to repentant Jahanara.
King and queen of Turin arrive for the marriage, but Shaitan and Badi become snakes and bite Salim and others. Roshan Ara prays to God and due to her good work, Imaan and Neki arrive and revive everyone.
Finally Aslam and Jahanara and Salim and Roshanara get married.
Fortunately this is a video of the song and dance. The song has a good tune and is very melodious too. Enjoy….

Some solace that we have a treasure of your songs to live by. Else the memories of the past would have been a difficult thing to live with.
The 1960 film ‘Naache Naagin Baaje Been’ is turning out to be a treasure hunt. The film is packed with such wonderful melodies. I pick today’s 9th song of the series from this film.
On screen this song is performed by Chandrashekhar and Kum Kum. Kum Kum is at her bewitching best in this dance sequence, as she is in practically all dances she has performed on screen. Throughout the entire dance sequence, one does not see her let up the ‘बलखाना’ as she takes on the challenge thrown by the hero, that she should not move like a ‘नागन’ – wonderfully executed dance steps.
The song is from the pen of Majrooh Sb, and the lilting composition is from the mind of Chitragupt. Enjoy this wonderful song, and the enchanting dance that accompanies it.
[Author Note: There are three lines in the second antaraa, that have been spliced out, most likely a damaged portion of the original celluloid film. I tried to check out more video versions of this song, but apparently, this error seems to be very old, and is propagating through all available versions that I could check quickly. I then tried to bring in the audio of this song. However unfortunately, the audio version of this song from the 78 rpm recordings contains only two antaraas. The antaraa that is not present in the audio version, is the very antaraa that has the missing lines in the video. So no luck. 😦 🙂 .]

Missing Films of 1960s – 63
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Shamma Jali To Jala Parwaana
Pyaar Bana Afsaana. . .
The film, ‘Pyaar Bana Afsaana’ was eventually never released. However the songs were already recorded and released. This song caught the attention of the listening public, and it did become quite a popular memory in the radio listening days.
Remembering Krishna Kalle – three years ago this day, she passed away at the age of 74.
In 1957, when she was declared the winner of a national level singing award for young talent, she received this award from the hands of the then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. More awards and recognitions followed in the subsequent years. In 1965, she was honored as the ‘Golden Voice of India’.
In 1960 she joined the All India Radio in Bombay (now Mumbai). However, within three or four years, she made her debut as a playback singer in the film industry. As per Geet Kosh, her first song came in the film ‘Daanveer Karna’ in 1965. She continued to be active in both the Hindi and Marathi cinema, and has also sung some songs in Kannada films. Given the situation of the industry, this talented young singer did never make it to the top level of playback singing in the industry. She sang over 200 songs in Hindi films in an active career that spanned from mid 1960s to mid 1980s. Besides, she also has to her credit, about 100 songs in the Marathi film. In addition, there are almost another 100 non-film songs and bhajans recorded by her.
Today’s song is from the 1967 film ‘Gunehgaar’. This is a Sheikh Mukhtar film that is produced under the banner of Shimla Productions, and is directed by R Thakar. Besides Sheikh Mukhtar, the star cast is led by Sanjeev Kumar and Kumkum. The other players in this films are Bhagwan, Madan Puri, Uma Dutt, Neelam, Nandini, Tuntun, Sulochana Chatterjee, Lakshmichaya, Kundan, Dilip Dutt, and Tiwari etc.
The story is a typical variation on the Sheikh Mukhtar tales. Shankar (Sheikh Mukhtar) is on the run from the police, for a crime believes he has committed; but actually he himself is mistaken. He flees from village and comes to Bombay, and becomes part of a gang led by Khan (Uma Dutt). Khan is a involved in criminal activities, but he is a man of his word. Shankar’s sister Kum Kum, also comes to Bombay in search of her brother. Sanjeev Kumar is an upright police officer. By a sequence of events, Kum Kum and Sanjeev Kumar meet at the police station, and he takes her to his home, since she has no place to stay. Love blossoms between them. Madan Puri, an old adversary of Shankar from the village, also comes to Bombay, and also starts working for Khan. Some more predictable events happen and then all is sorted out for a happy ending.
Geet Kosh lists 6 songs for this film, three of which are written by Naqsh Lyallpuri, and two by Akhtar Romani. The sixth song does not have a lyricist name mentioned against it. Today’s song is from the pen of Naqsh Lyallpuri. The music direction of this film is by Vedpal.
This is a ‘villain’s den’ song. Kum Kum has reached the adda of Khan. Khan is enamored by her beauty and wants her to dance for him. At first she refuses. He then promises her that no harm whatsoever will come to her and that he takes the responsibility to protect her. Since she has a purpose i.e. to locate her brother, hesitatingly she agrees. And the song follows. The song is delightful and melodious, and a very pleasing listen. When the song ends, Madan Puri makes an entrance. Song – Aankhen Pyaasi Lab Hain Pyaase (Gunehgaar) (1967) Singer – Krishna Kalle, Lyrics – Naqsh Layallpuri, MD – Vedpal
Lyrics
pyaala bhar ke
jo hamne poochha
jee kisko pehle
kahaan se pehle
tamaam mehfil pukaar uthi
ji humko pehle
yahaan se pehle
aankhen pyaasi lab hain pyaase
aankhen pyaasi lab hain pyaase
is mehfil mein sab hain pyaase
saagar utha saaqiya
sab ko pila saaqiya
aankhen pyaasi lab hain pyaase
is mehfil mein sab hain pyaase
saagar utha saaqiya
sab ko pila saaqiya
masti ka paighaam banin hain
zulfon ki rangeen ghataayen
masti ka paighaam banin hain
zulfon ki rangeen ghataayen
saaz dilon ke chhed rahi hai. . .
paayal ki betaab sadaayen
paayal ki betaab sadaayen
chhed inhin saazon ki dhun par
chhed inhin saazon ki dhun par
naghma naya saaqiya
sab ko pila saaqiya
aankhen pyaasi lab hain pyaase
is mehfil mein sab hain pyaase
saagar utha saaqiya
sab ko pila saaqiya
aaj utha na koi pyaasa
mehfil ki awaaz yahi hai
aaj utha na koi pyaasa
mehfil ki awaaz yahi hai
jaam pe jaam diye ja saaqi
jeene ka andaaz yahi hai
jeene ka andaaz yahi hai
roz kahaan laati hain raaten
roz kahaan laati hain raaten
aisi fizaa saaqia
sab ko pila saaqiya
aankhen pyaasi lab hain pyaase
is mehfil mein sab hain pyaase
saagar utha saaqiya
sab ko pila saaqiya

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’ से ‘ह’ तक (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 8

‘क’ – कहिए कैसा मिज़ाज है आपका
ना जाने कौन ये आवाज़ देता है॰ ॰ ॰
The sounds of his voice keep reverberating in the valleys of the mind – the voice that carries a million musical memories of an entire lifetime, unforgettable.
Today’s song in this series is a delightful exchange of young hearts in love. The film is ‘Salaam Memsaab’ from 1961. On screen, the song is performed by a very young Subiraj, and a very enchanting Kum Kum. It is always such a joy to watch Kum Kum on screen with that scintillating smile and the twinkle in the eyes that goes along with it. In a chirpy naughty mood, her expressions and her movements are such a pleasure to see. However, in this clip, I must say, her dance movements are just the typical signature dance steps of Bhagwan. Now Bhagwan is also in this film, and it is a matter of conjecture whether he had some say in the choreography and songs picurization. Maybe he did, the steps in this clip are so very much Bhagwan.
The film is produced by an entity that is called the Young Technicians Unit – Baria Films, and is directed by K Parvez. The star cast is listed as
Kumkum, Subiraj, KN Singh, Sheikh, Bhagwan, Meena, Wasi Khan, Arvind Kumar, Ahmed Patni, S Malik, Bir, and Naazi. Music for this film is composed by Ravi. The eight songs in this film are written by four songwriters – Asad Bhopali, SH Bihari, Priyadarshi and Qamar Jalaalabaadi. This particular song is from the pen of Asad Bhopali.
The singing voices are of Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle. The song is a lover’s tete-a-tete with the young Subiraj pursuing Kum Kum. At first, he is responsible for making her fall, then he tries to appease her by asking her “कहिए कैसा मिजाज है॰॰॰”.
A fun song, that is also such a wonderful melodious memory from the radio listening days. Listen and enjoy.
Song – Kahiye Kaisa Mizaaj Hai Aapka (Salaam Memsaab) (1961) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Asad Bhopali, MD – Ravi
Mohammed Rafi + Asha Bhosle
Lyrics
kahiye kaisa mizaaj hai aapka
hum se kya vaasta hai janaab ka
arey arey aap to bigadne lagey
nahin nahin aapko samajhne lagey
o kahiye kaisa mizaaj hai aapka
hum se kya vaasta hai janaab ka
arey arey aap to bigadne lagey
nahin nahin aapko samajhne lagey
o kahiye kaisa mizaaj hai aapka
jis din se pyaar hua
dil beqaraar hua
jeena dushvaar hua teri kasam
jis din se pyaar hua
dil beqaraar hua
jeena dushvaar hua teri kasam
yun na sataaya karo
dil na jalaaya karo
kasmen na khaaya karo jhoothe sanam
tera deewaana hoon teri kasam
kya bharosa hai mardon ki zaat ka
kya iraada hai aakhir janaab ka
arey arey aap to bigadne lagey
nahin nahin aapko samajhne lagey
kahiye kaisa mizaaj hai aapka
nazron ne jaan liya
dil ne pehchaan liya
lo hum ne maan liya apna tumhen
nazron ne jaan liya
dil ne pehchaan liya
lo hum ne maan liya apna tumhen
mushkil se baat bani
dil ko bas hai ye khushi
tumne samjha to sahi apna mujhe
arey arey aap to bigadne lagey
nahin nahin aapko samajhne lagey
o kahiye kaisa mizaaj hai aapka
ye rut ye pyaara samaan
dil ki duniya hai jawaan
ye baaten roz kahaan jaane wafaa
ye rut ye pyaara samaan
dil ki duniya hai jawaan
ye baaten roz kahaan jaane wafaa
aise mein dil bhi mera
masti mein jhoom utha
halka halka sa nasha chhaane laga
ab zindagi ka mazaa aane laga
kahiye kaisa mizaaj hai aapka
hum se kya vaasta hai janaab ka
arey arey aap to bigadne lagey
nahin nahin aapko samajhne lagey
kahiye kaisa mizaaj hai aapka
hum se kya vaasta hai janaab ka

Here is the sixth song from “Dushman”(1957) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and S D Batish. Tanveer Naqvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Husnlal Bhagatram.
The song is picturised as a dance song on Kumkum, with some musicians playing musical instruments. The bearded musician playing table (who I think could be Dev Anand in disguise) lip syncs a few lines in S D Batish’s voice.
I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the actors visible in the picturisation.
With this song, “Dushman” (1957) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog. Seeing that “Dushman” (1939) and “Dushman” (1971) are already YIPPEED, one can say that all the three movies titled “Dushman” are now YIPPEED in the blog.
Song-Dhokha na khaana teekhe hain nainwa ke baan (Dushman)(1957) Asha Bhonsle, S D Batish, Lyrics- Tanveer Naqvi, MD-Husnlal Bhagatram
Lyrics
teekhe hain nainwa ke baan ji
dhokha na khaana
teekhe hain nainwa ke baan ji
dhokha na khaana
zulfon ke naag hain zehri
phaile hain jaal sunahri
jaan ke rehna na anjaan
dhokha na khaana
teekhe hain nainwa ke baan ji
dhokha na khaana
teekhe hain nainwa ke baan
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa
chamak rahi hai meri shokhiyon mein shamsheeren
chhanak rahi hai meri paayalon mein zanjeeren
palken hain tej kataaren
nazren chalti talwaaren
bachna nahin hai aasaan
dhokha na khaana
teekhe hain nainwa ke baan
dhokha na khaana
teekhe hain nainwa ke baan
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa
apne kabze mein aaj hai taqdeeer
toot kar gir padegi har zanjeer
darte hain kab dil waale
hans hans ke baan chala le
ye bhi tera hai ehsaan
dhokha na khaana
teekhe hain nainwa ke baan ji
dhokha na khaana
teekhe hain nainwa ke baan
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa
mehfil mein ab naya hi nazaara hai dekhna
meri har ik adaa mein ishaara hai dekhna
kehti hoon bach ke rehna
dekho ji phir na kehna
duniya badi hai beimaan
dhokha na khaana
teekhe hain nainwa ke baan ji
dhokha na khaana
teekhe hain nainwa ke baan
ji dhokha na khaana
teekhe hain nainwa ke baan
Chori khole na

On the first day of the year 2008, I mentioned that I was able to hold on to my previous year’s new year resolution for 40 days (introducing a debutant movie daily) and 125 days (YIPPYing a movie daily) respectively.
Our regulars, suitably inspired by my writeup, have taken it upon themselves to at least help me in introducing one debutant song daily in the year 2018. The very first song post covered in the year 2018 by Peevesie’s mom was a debutant movie viz “Kohraam” (1999). On the next day viz 2 january 2018, a song from a debutant movie “Kisaan Kanya” (1937) was discussed by Mr Sadanand Kamath. Sudhir Jee has lined up another debutant movie song for the next day. That way at least the “debutant” movie resolution has been taken care of till now.
