“Mazdoor”(1945) was directed by Nitin Bose for Filmistan, Bombay. This movie had Nasir Khan, Indumati, Veera, K.N.Singh, Radhakishen etc in it.

All the actors mentioned above were making their debuts !

The movie was inspired from 1941 Hollywood movie “How green Was my valley”(1941). I recall watching this movie on DD in 1980s.

Story of “Mazdoor”(1945) was recounted by Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh, our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia. Here is what he had to say about the story of this movie :-

Nasir Khan is in love with a village girl-Indumati. He leaves for the city to get a job. He saves a mill owner’s(K.N.Singh) daughter-Veera from a car accident. He is taken to her house as he is wounded in this process. He recovers and is made Manager of the mill. Veera falls in his love. Meanwhile Indumati and her mother-Moti, suffer in the village. They too come to the city and Indumati gets a job in the same Mill. There are Labour problems in the Mill and 2 groups compete with each other. Finally there is confrontation between the Unions and the Mill owner. Nasir Khan, at the end, exposes the Mill owner and joins the Union leader, thus uniting with Indumati.

“Mazdoor”(1945) had six songs in it. Two songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the third song from the movie to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Binapani Mukherjee. Gopal Singh Nepali is the lyricist. Music is composed by Hari Prasanna Das.

Only audio of this melancholic song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song.

Song-Aabad dil ki duniya barbaad huyi hai (Mazdoor)(1945) Singer-Binapani Mukherjee, Lyrics-Gopal Singh Nepali, MD-Hari Prasanna Das

Lyrics

aabaad dil ki duniya
barbaad hui hai
ab aankhon ka taara mera koi nahin hai
aabad dil ki duniya
barbaad hui hai
ab aankhon ka taara mera koi nahin hai

samjhe thhe jise apni
samjhe thhe jise apni
duniya wo paraayi thhi
maine kisi ki daulat dhokhe mein churaayee thhee
lauta ke usey
lauta ke usey
lauta ke usey kismat kangaal hui hai
ab kaanon ka pyaara mera koi nahin hai

bujh to gaya hai dil ka diya
kaise jalaaun
bujh to gaaya hai dil ka diya
kaise jalaaun
hai aaj mera kaun jise paas bulaaun
hai aaj mera kaun jise paas bulaaun
ab saamne manjhdhaar
hai saamne manjhdhaar
lahron mein meri naav pareshaan hui hai
ab paar kinaara mera koi nahin hai
aabaad dil ki duniya barbaad hui hai
ab aankhon ka taara mera koi nahin hai

5061 Post No. : 16975

Today’s song is from the film Mulaqat-1947.

The film was made by Taj mahal pictures. It’s all 11 songs were written by Munshi Dil Lucknowi and the film was directed by the Lyricist himself. Actually, ” Munshi ” means a Clerk, a writer, a literary assistant or a Language Teacher. How this Munshi directed the movie is a wonder. But then in the Hindi film industry, you find many such odd, unimaginable things. This was not his first directorial venture. He had already tried his hand at film-“Abla ki Shakti’-1940 and after this film, he again directed a film “Do Bhai”-1954. As a Lyricst, he write 126 songs in 16 film which included films like Iqrar-42,Naqgad narayan-43 ( a remake of Marathi film ” पैसा बोलतो आहे”), Sohni Mahiwal-46 and Laila-54. After this he migrated to Pakistan.

In Hindi, films are repeated in different ways like….

1. Same Titles – Commonest type, but not necessary that the film content will be the same. Hundreds of titles are repeated from Twice to more than 5 times. The maximum repetitions’ honour goes to the title ” INSAF “. Films with this title were made as many as 7 times. Funnily, there was at least one “Insaf” movie in each decade for 70 continuous
years ! They were made in 1937, 1946,1956, 1966,1973, 1987 and 1997. What Luck !

2. Same story – Different Titles…like Actor, Damaad and Albela – all made in 1951. Aurat teri yehi kahani-1954 and Aurat Teri kahani-1988. Many others.

3.Remakes….a) Hindi to Hindi – Aurat and Mother India, Abodh and Uphaar, Panghat-Chitchor and Main Prem ki diwani hoon, Hamare Tumhare and Khatta Meetha, Mala and Amar, Grihasthi and Ghar Basake dekho, Malkin and Biradari etc.

b) Other languages to Hindi like Marathi, Bangla, Tamil, Telugu etc. Chandralekha, Bahar, Ladki, Many films from New Theatres, Calcutta.

c) Dubbed films like Jaisimha to Jaisingh. Many films fall in this category nowadays, especially from the south.

There are many such remakes and the lists would be too long. This only proves that a popular theme/story is worth remaking a film. Why does this happen? Are there a shortage of stories ?
In 2004, a book called “Why we tell stories’, written by Christopher Booker was published. It is a book having more than 700 pages-728 pages to be exact. The book says “There are only 7 (Seven) basic plots in the whole world. They are recycled again and again in Novels, movies, Plays and Operas. These are
1.Overcoming the Monster
2.Rags to riches
3.The quest
4.Voyage and return
5.Rebirth or identical persons.
6.Comedy and
7.Tragedy .

After this book was published, there was chaos and criticism started. ‘New York Times’ also jumped in. The author coolly replied to all points and stuck to his statements. If we look at Hindi films, I personally feel that what the author has said is true in our case. Only thing is that our film stories are always a clever mixture of all or some of the above themes.

Today’s movie Mulaqat-47 was also a repeat title film. Films on this title were made in 1947, 1993 and 2002. This was a film with Muslim social background. The cast of the film was Naseem Banu, Prem Adib, Rama Shukla, Mumtaz Ali, Majid, Najma, Shah Nawaz and many others. The story of the film was –

Nasir (Prem Adib) is a school teacher. He and Saeeda fall in love and think of getting married. Saeeda loses her father and orphan Saeeda has to live with her Uncle and Aunt, who ill-treat her. fed up os this treatment she wants to commit suicide under a train, but is saved by a passing by Nawab Saheb (Shah Nawaz). He takes her home and decides to keep her there with them. He has a daughter who is Nasir’s student. Through her, the lovers come together again and decide to get married soon.
Meanwhile Mukarram (Rama Shukla), the vagabond son of the Nawab returns home. promising to mend his ways, he stays there. Now he too wants to marry Saeeda. The Nawab asks her. Under the burden of his help, she can not say ‘No’. The marriage is fixed.
Just one day prior to marriage, the town Police come and arrest Mukarram for a murder, which he had committed and take him away. The nawab is heartbroken. His daughter tells him about Nasi and Saeeda’s love affair. Nawab immediately calls Nasir and arranges his marriage with Saeeda. The End.

Shahnawaz Khan, known only as Shahnawaz, was born on 18-9-1906 in Hyderabad Deccan. His father was a Major in Hyderabad’s Nizam Army. During his school education, he used to act in dramas. After Matriculation, he joined the Govt. Service in Hyderabad state. He was, however, keen on joining films and dramas. After 5 years, he left the job and started a Motor car business. In that connection, he would visit Bombay often and try his luck at different studios. Finally, his efforts bore fruit and he got a Villain’s role in film Bharat ka laal-36, in which he was listed as S.Nawaz. It was a stunt film made by the Kadam brothers (Harischandra rao and Chandra rao Kadam), with Master Bhagwan as the Hero.

After this, he never went back to Hyderabad. Then came his films Daulat-37, Toofani khazana-37, Rangila Mazdoor-38, Jungle king-39, Sardar 40 etc etc. In 1940, he joined Bombay Talkies and worked in films. He was apparently in Devika Rani’s camp. He was seen in Punarmilan-40,Bandhan-40, Jhoola-41, Naya Sansar-41, Kismet – 43 and Hamari Baat-43.He also worked in Masterji-43, Police,Parakh and Anban-44, Zeenat, Bhaijan and Humayun-45 and few more films. In all, he did 35 films in India. In 1948, Shahnawaz migrated to Pakistan. He was welcomed there. He did 41 films in Pakistan (32 Urdu and 9 Punjabi). Some of his films were quite famous, like Aansoo-50, Sassi-54, Ayyaz-60 etc.

Shahnawaz died in Karachi on 18-6-1971. His last released film was Nek Parween-75.

There are two small actors. Here is some information about them, since they migrated to Pakistan after this film.

Majid’s name was Abdul Majid Syed. He was born at Farrukhabad in U.P. in 1915. His father was an Overseer. After matric in 1929, he started his business of Leather in Akola, Maharashtra. in 1935, actor, director and producer Nazeer of Hind pictures, introduced him to S.K.Daryani and he got a small role in Sher ka Panja-36 and Sangdil samaj-36. However, from film Bulldog-37, he got side roles and lead roles in films like Gentleman daku-37, insaaf-37, Rajkumari-38, Masterman-38, Zamana-38, Mud-40, Saubhagya-40, Swami-41, Swaminath-42, he also acted in more films like Najma-43, Babar-44 and Zeenat-45.

In all he did over 100 films till 1947. After Partition, he migrated to Pakistan with Nazeer and Swarnalata. In Pakistan he did just 7 films. He died on 24-9-1959.

Najma was born at Lahore on 1-12-1928. Her father was a businessman. Her real name was Naseem. Since there was already one famous actress Naseem, she changed her name. She first worked in ‘Kunwaara baap’ (1942) and ‘Uljhan’ (1942) Then came ‘Nai Zindagi’ (1943), ‘Dr Kumar’ (1944), ‘Piya Milan’ (1945)’ ‘Naseeb’ (1945) and Mulaqat-1947. Then she got married, left films and migrated to Pakistan.

Today’s song is a duet by Arunkumar Mukherjee and Binapani Mukherjee. The music was by Khemchand Prakash. Enjoy….

Blog Day : 4143 Post No. : 15308

Today’s song is from the film Leela-1947.

Film Leela-1947, a Filmistan offering, was directed by Dattaram N Pai. He was actually an Editor with Filmistan. His name appears as a Director first for film Eight Days-1946. That film was actually directed by Ashok kumar, but Dattaram’s name was given as a Director in the credits. His second and last film as a Director was Leela-1947. I suppose, he did try to do justice to the Director’s chair, but after this film, he did not direct any other film. May be, looking at his limitations, Filmistan did not opt for him anymore.

All the 9 songs of the film were written by G S Nepali and Qamar Jalalabadi. The singers were Binapani, Shamshad, Geeta Roy, Amirbai and Chitalkar. The MD was C Ramchandra. The cast of the film was Shobha, Kanu Roy, Veera, V H Desai, Agha, Leela Mishra, Sunalini Devi etc.etc.

The Heroine of this film, Shobha, unfortunately remains an actress about whom no information is available. On going through the HFGK, I find her name in at least 20++ films. Sometimes she is listed as Shobha Devi. Another bit of information about Shobha was that that the actress Lata Sinha, who started as a child star (as Baby Lata) in Riyasat-55 and Nau Do Gyarah-1957 etc. was her daughter. Lata did a good role in Bees saal baad-1962. She mainly acted in action/stunt, costume and other B and C grade films only. She was also in film Bhoot Bungla-1965.

Film Leela-1947 was made by Filmistan. When a dissatisfied, and disillusioned splinter group fell out of Bombay Talkies, Filmistan was a Dream project for them. The important members from this group were S.Mukherjee, Ashok Kumar, Gyan Mukherjee and Rai Bahadur Chunilal. For them founding Filmistan was a goal achievement. For C Ramchandra, finding Filmistan was a goal achievement, because those days he had left Jayant Desai’s company and was looking for another film company. His good old friend Kavi Pradeep, who was close to S.Mukherjee from their Bombay Talkies days, brought in a very lucrative offer from Filmistan and C Ramchandra joined it with pleasure.

Though C Ramchandra had begun his career in 1942 with Sukhi Jeevan, his first Hindi film as a MD, his music had not flourished till he joined Filmistan. The 5 films he had made with Jayant Desai were reasonably good but they were not Hits. It was only in Filmistan he achieved, what one would call-Success. Out of the 11 films that he made here. his success rate was more than 50%. Especially, the music of films like Shehnai-1947, Saajan-1947, Khidki-1948, Nadiya ke par-1948, Patanga-1949, Samadhi-1950 and Anarkali-1953 created songs which are remembered even today. To make songs whose popularity lasted for more than 70++ years, is surely an achievement.

It was also when he was with Filmistan that people were comparing him and Naushad and a discussion always circulated who was the Numero Uno as an MD. Though I am a C Ramchandra Bhakta, I am of the opinion, that in the race of creating everlasting Hit songs, C Ramchandra was no match to Naushad. The strike rate of Naushad’s Hit films was much much more than that of C Ramchandra.

In the year 1946, C Ramchandra gave music to 4 films(1 for Filmistan), in 1947 it was 7 films (4 for Filmistan) and in 48 films were 8 (2 for Filmistan). So, in these 3 years, he did 19 films (7 for Filmistan). The rest comprised of stunt films of Master Bhagwan and other social films. Hit films were -5, all for Filmistan.

During this period, starting with film Safar-1946, his female lead singer was Binapani Mukherjee. She remained so, till Lata Mangeshkar dominated the music of C Ramchandra from 1950 onwards. As such, Binapani was not a great singer and she had limitations. This, precisely, was the reason why her career was limited to only about just 20 odd films with 50 odd songs. Her all popular songs were with C Ramchandra only.

Binapani was born on 17-10-1925, in a music loving family of Calcutta. Initial music training was by her grandfather Sheetal chandra Mukherjee and and later from ustad Sageer Khan of Rampur.

C.Ramchandra gave her first break in playback in film “Muskurahat”-1943. Her first song was-‘Hans le gaa le…’. It was a duet with CR.
Then came Majdoor, Eight days, Darban, Rangbhumi, but she became famous after ‘Safar’-46.

Her most popular song-‘kabhi yaad kar ke,gali paar kar ke,chali aana hamare angana…’ was from this film, as a duet with C Ramchandra.

She also sang in Leela, Mulakat, Shahnai, Samrat Ashok, Satyanarayan, Raaz, Rumaal, Asra, Abla, Bhikari, Fariyad, Laajawab, Ghayal etc.

Her last film was Gyan Dutt’s ‘Ghayal’-1951.

She was the lead singer (female) for C.Ramchandra, till 1950 i.e. till Lata came on the scene.

Her voice was very sweet and was suitable for sad songs.

She sang under C Ramchandra, Khemchand Prakash, Gyan Dutt, Hansraj Behl, Sardar Malik, Anil Biswas, S D Burman, H P Das, Premnath, Gulshan Sufi, Khursheed khan etc. etc.

After playback singing, she retired from film singing and taught music to aspirants throughout her unmarried life. She was staying in Bombay, with her brother.

The Hero of film Leela was Kanu Roy. The name KANU ROY is another instance of ” Same name confusion “. There was a composer also by the name Kanu Roy who gave music in a few films. Most people and many Internet sites, including IMDB,consider these two different persons as one and claim films for acting and music together, as if he was an actor and a composer. In Hindi films this happened routinely, but in the early era of Talkie films. Master Krishnarao, Vinayakrao Patwardhan, Master Mohammed, Badriprashad, Vithaldas Panchotiya etc can be quoted as actor/composers. Lately only the name of Kishore Kumar comes to the mind in this category.

Kanu Roy (the Actor) was in reality a name for Nalini Ranjan Roy, born on 9-12-1912 at Jabalpore. He was very fond of acting and so landed at Bombay Talkies, a company started by 2 Benagalese- Himanshu Roy and Devika Rani. Those days many people from Bengal used to come to Bombay Talkies, but only the capable ones like Amiya Chakravarty, Shashadhar Mukherjee or Ashok Kumar etc could make their careers here.

Kanu Roy started his acting career from the film Basant-1942. His name Nalini was sounding like a Girl’s name in Bombay ( there were already half a dozen Nalinis working in films those days), so it was changed and he opted for Kanu, his pet name in the house. Thus Kanu Roy came into films. Due to his good looks, he even became a lead actor in a few films. Nazrana-1946 (UR) was one such film where he was working opposite Kamini Kaushal. Kanu Roy also left Bombay Talkies along with S.Mukherjee and others and joined Filmistan. He was in many Filmistan films like, Munim ji, Nastik, Naagin, Jagriti etc. He acted in a Bangla film ‘Samar’too in 1950. Kanu Roy worked in about 40 odd films from 42 to 83 ( kisi se naa kehna).

It is a coincidence that Leela Mishra was also working in film Leela-1947. This is one actress ,who came from a village and remained a villager though out her life. Though she earned a lot with 300++ films, till the end she lived in a 2 room tenement only. She disliked and never saw films, even her own films.

Leela Mishra (1 January 1908 – 17 January 1988) was a Hindi film actress. She worked as a character actor in over 300 Hindi films for five decades, and is best remembered for playing stock characters such as aunts (Chachi or Mausi). She is best known for her role of “mausi” in the blockbuster Sholay (1975), Dil Se Mile Dil (1978), Baton Baton Mein (1979), Rajesh Khanna films such as Palkon Ki Chhaon Mein, Aanchal, Mehbooba, Amar Prem and Rajshri Productions hits such as Geet Gaata Chal (1975), Nadiya Ke Paar (1982) and Abodh (1984). Her career’s best performance was in Naani Maa in 1981, for which she received Best Actress award at the age of 73.

Leela Mishra was married to Ram Prasad Mishra, who was a character artist, then working in silent films. She got married at the very young age of 12. By the time she was 17, she had two daughters. She hailed from Jais, Raebareli. She and her husband were from zamindar (landowners) families.

Leela Mishra was discovered by a man called Mama Shinde, who was working for Dadasaheb Phalke’s Nasik Cinetone. He persuaded her husband to make her work in films. During those days there was a severe scarcity of women actors in films; this was evident in the paychecks that the Mishras received when they went to Nasik for the shooting. While Ram Prasad Mishra was hired on a salary of Rs. 150 per month, Leela Mishra was offered Rs. 500 per month. However, as they fared poorly in front of the camera, their contracts were cancelled.

The next opportunity that came their way was an offer to work in the movie Bhikarin, which was being produced by Kolhapur Cinetone, a company owned by the Maharaja of Kolhapur. However, Leela Mishra lost out on this opportunity too, as the role required her to put her arms round the actor (who was not her husband) while delivering a dialogue, which she point-blank refused to do.

Their next film was Gangavataran-1937, directed by Dadasaheb Phalke. This was his only and the last Talkie film. In this film Leela did the role of Parvati. This became her first film.

She had faced a similar problem while working earlier in another film titled Honhaar-1936. She was cast opposite Shahu Modak as a heroine, and was supposed to hug and embrace him, which she again refused steadfastly. Since the company was legally in a weak position, they couldn’t turn her out of the film, which proved to be a blessing in disguise for her. She was offered Modak’s mother’s role in the film and it clicked instantly. This opened the doors for her to play mother roles at the young age of 18.

Early on in her career she acted in notable films such as the musical hit Anmol Ghadi (1946), Raj Kapoor’s Awaara (1951) and Nargis-Balraj Sahni starrer Lajwanti (1958), which was nominated for the Palme d’Or for Best Film at 1959 Cannes Film Festival.

She acted in the first Bhojpuri film, Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo (1962), which also starred Kumkum, Helen and Nasir Hussain.

Her roles varied from mothers, benign or evil aunts, to comic roles.

She acted in 344 films. Her last released film was Aatank-1996. 8 films were released after her death.

Today’s song is the 7th song (out of nine) from the film. It is a duet of Chitalkar and Binapani ( this is a name of Goddess Saraswati). It is aquite hummable song. Enjoy.

dharti se dheere dheere
jab phoolon ka chaand uthhe

hum bhi ghar se nikal chalenge
pyaar ki jamuna teere

Blog Day : 3931 Post No. : 15003

Mukesh song ” Dil jalta hai to jalne de” actually introduced me to the film Pehli Nazar-45. Being a Muslim social film, it was quite popular in Hyderabad, which was Nizam state, with a considerable Muslim population in it.

When the Fazli Brothers-the Director brothers- decided to make their first Muslim social film, ” Qaidi” in 1940, they were not sure how the purists in their religion would accept a film on Muslim life. But the director-Hussanain Fazli- was very firm that come what may, he would produce a Muslim social film. Just to be on a safe ground, he chose to make the film in Calcutta- far off from Bombay to avoid any resistance from the fundamentalists. The film was made by Film Corporation of India, Calcutta.

Contrary to Fazli’s fears, film Qaidi-40 was received by the Muslim community with open arms. It was a Box office success wherever it was released. For first time perhaps, the community was treated with a film about their culture and social life. Film Qaidi-40 set the ball rolling. It gave a feeling of ” yes, we can do it” not only to Fazli Brothers but many other producers, like Mehboob, K.Asif, Mazhar Khan etc etc.

From the 40s to the 47, there was a line of Muslim social films lined with pride and confidence. Notable amongst them was Paak Daaman-40 by Rustom Modi, Masoom-41 by Fazli brothers, Muslim ka lal-41 by Mohan Pictures, Fashion -43 by Fazli Brothers, Najma-43 by Mehboob, Salma-43 by Nazir Ahmed, Ismat-44 by Fazli Brothers, Bade Nawab saab-44 by actor Kumar and Pramila, Bhaijaan-45 by United Films and Phool-45 by K.Asif.

With this background, the Actor, Producer and the Director Mazhar Khan decided to make a Muslim social film and he started ” Pehli Nazar’ in 1945. When he was thinking about the cast, one of his friends from Lahore told him about a new beautiful girl from Lahore who acted in film Khazanchi-41 in a small role of a Bar Girl-on whom a full song was filmed. She, though a Muslim, called herself “Asha”. Mazhar khan saw the film and decided to feature this girl as heroine of his film. he went to Lahore, met the girl and gave her such a lucrative offer that she accepted it immediately. She was Munawar Sultana.

We have often heard and read that in olden days, young film aspirants from far off cities and smaller towns, ran away from homes to the Maya Nagari-Bombay, to try their luck. Few of them succeeded. But mind you, not ALL stars came running away to Bombay. Many of them were brought honourably too, particularly from other film centres like Calcutta and Lahore. For example, Shamshad Begum was brought to Bombay, honourably from Lahore. Saigal was brought from Calcutta to Bombay, with attractive offer.

That, precisely, was the fame of Bombay, that careers are made in Bombay and opportunities are found in abundance for them who have Talent and Luck ! Munawar Sultana, was one such star, who was brought from Lahore with an offer of Rs. 4000 pm and rented furnished accomodation – by Mazhar Khan

Munawar Sultana was born on 8 November 1924, in Lahore, into a strict Punjabi Muslim family. According to an interview with son Sarfaraz and daughter Shaheen, conducted by Shishir Krishna Sharma, Munawwar’s father was a radio announcer. Munawwar wanted to become a doctor, but was side-tracked by an offer in films. This was a small role in the film, Dalsukh Pancholi’s Khazanchi (1941), where she played a barmaid, and had a song, “Peene Ke Din Aaye” picturised on her. She went by the screen name Asha for this period.
In 1945, she was visited in Lahore by producer-actor-director Mazhar Khan, who contracted her on a monthly fee of Rs. 4000 plus an apartment, and brought her to Bombay. Munawwar’s first film with Mazhar was Pehli Nazar, where she was cast opposite actor Motilal. In the popular song “Dil Jalta Hai Toh Jalne Do” (Let the Aflame Heart Burn) playbacked by singer Mukesh for Motilal, Khan focused on Munawwar’s close-ups during the picturisation.

Following Pehli Nazar, she was kept busy through 1947 to 1949 working in several films. Baburao Patel wrote in the cine-mag Filmindia 1949, about her being one of the most over-worked actresses along with Suraiya and Nargis.
In 1947, Munawar acted in four films Dard, Elaan, Andhon Ki Duniya and Naiyya. Dard was directed by Kardar under Kardar Productions. In spite of no big stars being in the film, it turned out to be a surprise “musical hit” at the box office. The hero of the film was Kardar’s brother Nusrat (Kardar). The song “Afsana Likh Rahin Hoon” became a big success. Elaan garnered positive reviews for Munawwar. A Muslim social, the film was praised for its “progressive attitude” towards the need of education.

A lot has already been written about Elaan-47,elsewhere,as well as on this blog too, earlier.

When Mehboob Khan heard the story initially,he spent few days thinking about it.He anticipated the adverse reactions of the Fundamentalists on this film. His team for this film included many Muslims, almost in every department. Major contributors like Naushad, Zia Sarhadi, Amirbai Karnataki and most important , Munawar Sultana, the Heroine, were all Muslims.Others at least were connected indirectly, but Munawar was the Heroine.

Mehboob Khan had a sitting with her and explained to her the entire story and the likely repercussions to the film.He gave her an option to opt out of the film. Munawar played very brave and firmly told Mehboob Khan that she was 100% with him and was ready to work and face, whatever happens as an aftermath.
This act of courage was loved and appreciated by Mehboob Khan very much and he remained indebted to her ever after.
1948 saw Munawar in four more films. Parai Aag, Sona, Majboor and Meri Kahani

1949 was Munawar’s busiest year with seven releases. Out of her four films released in 1950, Munawar’s most notable film was Babul (Father’s House). She acted opposite Dilip and Nargis in this love triangle. Directed by S. U. Sunny, the music was composed by Naushad The film became a major success at the box office. She acted in a few more films till 1956, with Jallad being her last appearance.

From 1950, Munawar’s career slowed down, and she acted in fewer films. She met her husband Sharif Ali Bhagat, a businessman, on the sets of a movie for which he provided furniture. He produced two films with Munawar in the lead, Meri Kahani (1948) and Pyar Ki Manzil (1950). Following the sudden death of her husband in 1966, Munawar managed her family of four sons and three daughters . In the last eight years of her life, Munawar suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. She died on 15 September 2007, at her home in Ambedkar Road. Pali Hill, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.

For the second Heroine’s role, Mazhar had already signed actress Veena. He was impressed with her looks and style. Getting Veena for this film posed no problem. The Hero was to be Motilal. Anil Biswas too had been signed for its music. The shooting started in early 1945. In between Mazhar khan himself as well actress Veena were acting in K Asif’s film Phool-a Muslim social film again. This film was full of Top stars of those times, so even after completion of the shooting of the film Pehli Nazar, the film was not released in Bombay. The film was censored in the end of 1945. Then the film was first released in Lahore and then in major cities of Northern India. Finally Pehli Nazar was released in Bombay on 18-4-1947 at Minerva Theatre. Originally it was to be in Royal opera House, but the inordinate delay in Bombay release forced it to be in Minerva, another posh theatre of repute.

The film and the acting, particularly of Motilal and Munawar Sultana was appreciated by newspapers and film magazines. There were different opinions about the end of the film. Overall Mazhar khan was successful in fulfilling his dream of making a good Muslim social film, after all. The cast of the film was Motilal, Veena, Munawar Sultana, Baburao Pendharkar, Balakram,Bhudo Advani, Cuckoo, Parveen ( made her debut in this film), Nemo, Nafeesa Begum, Bibbo, Leela Pawar etc etc.

Nemo’s real name was M M Beg. Born at Calcutta on 27th December 1903. Passed Senior Cambridge exam and entered Film line. In 1933. He edited the periodical ‘ AKKAS’ for New Theatres, in English and Urdu. Wrote story of film “President”. Debut in film Yahudi ki Ladki-33 Mostly worked in NT films. till Kashinath-43. In all, he worked in 25 films, 17 of them with new Theatres only. I remember him in film Shri 420 as the seth who brings Police to stop the song and dance of the Basti.

The story of film Pehli Nazar-45 was….. Nasir Mirza and Akhtar Mirza were Lucknow based brothers. Due to a rift between them they lived separately in the same Haveli as neighbours. There was no talk between the brothers.

However Shahida ( Veena), daughter of Nasir and Husna (Munawar Sultana) daughter of Akhtar were bosom friends since childhood and were almost inseparable.

Nasir’s friend in Bareilly sends his son Mushtaq (Motilal) for studies in Lucknow. Mushtaq and Shahida become friendly and Nasir gets them engaged. But, as the brothers are not on talking terms this is kept secret.

One day Mushtaq happens to see Husna, she also sees him and love blooms between them. Mushtaq is so enamoured with Husna, that he breaks his engagement with Shahida. Upset Shahida feels guilty that she did not inform Husna about their engagement.

When Husna learns about the engagement of Shahida and Mushtaq, she feels guilty and perturbed. There is now a chaos in both families. Husna fears that her father may commit suicide to avoid humiliation. After lot of thinking Husna decides to end her life and consumes poison and dies.

The brothers are in shock and grief. They realise their follies and unite. Mushtaq finally marries Shahida only.

There are 10 songs in this film. 7 songs are already discussed. There are several stories about the recording of song ” dil jalta hai to jalne de”. which have been discussed earlier, so we bypass them today. Songs of this film have been discussed by Sadanand ji, Sudhir ji and Atul ji. With me presenting a song today, the film becomes Unique whose songs have been discussed by all 4 of us !

Today’s song is a song and dance, shot on Cuckoo and others. HFGK is silent on the names of singers. This is an issue which is unnecessarily magnified. One must understand that Harmandir ji did this colossal work of HFGK, with great hard work and used whatever information was available to him that time. In few cases no information was available, in some cases wrong information was used and in some case doubtful information was there. He added ” Addenda” to all volumes, with additional information correcting the gaps etc. So, even if singers are not mentioned for some songs, later on experts have rightly identified the voices and due credit is given. We did it on our Blog this, several times. So ” HFGK does not mention singer” need not be made into a big issue at all. In today’s case Sadanand ji-the uploader- has identified the main voice as that of Binapani Mukherjee. Some other expert has identified Naseem Akhtar as the second voice. I am considering both these names as singers.
Editor note- There is a third female voice in the song as well.

( I am thankful for some information used from ‘Forgotten movies on Muslim culture 1933-1947’ by Kamlakar Pasupuleti ji, The Filmdom-1946, Harish Raghuwanshi ji, and my notes ).

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 18
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘द’ – दिल्ली वाले साब गजब कर डाला रे ॰ ॰ ॰

– – – –

खुदा भी आसमान से जब ज़मीं पर देखता होगा॰ ॰ ॰

तेरी आवाज़ को किसने बनाया, सोचता होगा॰ ॰ ॰

The voice, that defined a new benchmark for divinity; no wonder if God Himself would be wondering, how such a human voice got created. . .

– – – –

Presenting the next song in this series.

This one turns out to be a fun exchange between a lady and a gentleman, who most likely are a husband-wife pair. From the lyrics, one can surmise that the gentleman works with the police force and has recently been promoted to be a ‘thaanedar’, or in other words – the inspector who heads a police station. In today’s parlance, this would be equivalent of an SHO – Station House Officer.

So the lady is expressing wonder at the action of some higher up officer – ‘Dilli Waale Saahb’ to make her husband an inspector. She seems not being able to believe it – ‘gajab kar daala re’. And then the rest of the song follows, with some fun lyrics as the two exchange some humorous comments. Listen to the lyrics, and the enjoy the fun.

The song is from the film ‘Bhikhaari’ from 1949. Now a very interesting thing noted in Geet Kosh. This film seems to be the same as the 1948 film ‘Satyanarayan’. As we review the information about these two films, all the demographics, as in production banner, director, music director, lyricists and actors, all are exactly the same. And further, the list of songs is almost identical. The nine songs are listed with exactly the same mukhda. The film ‘Satyanarayan’ has one extra item, as in instrumental music recording. Interesting thing is that the serial nos. of the gramophone records are different. This indicates that the songs were released twice on two different sets of gramophone records, under the respective names of two films.

The film is produced under the banner of Bhagwan Pictures, Bombay. Two names are listed as directors – Kumar Sahu and R Vishnuram. The nine songs are penned by four lyricists – Pt Indra, Madhukar (a name that is likely the same as Madhukar Rajasthani), Sewak and Surjeet (again, a name that is likely the same as Surjeet Sethi). Music is composed by Hansraj Behl. List of actors includes Ranjeet Kumari, Roop Kumari, Jawahar Kaul, Balakram, Sewak, B Gill, SP Mahindra, Chanchal Kumari, Leela Gupte, and Laxmi Chand.

The singing voices are of Mohammed Rafi Sb and Binapani Mukherji. Enjoy this fun song – another addition to the list of memorable duets of Rafi Sb.

Lyrics

dilli waale saa..aab
dilli waale saab
gajab kar daala re
dilli waale saab
dilli waale saab
meri chhoti si pistol
gajab kar daala kya
chhoti si pistol
chhoti si pistol
mere piya ko thaanedar bana diya matwaala
dilli waale
mere piya ko
thaanedar bana diya matwaala
dilli waale
oy dilli waale saab
gajab kar daala re
dilli waale saab

sun sun baat gawaar naar
tu thi gwaale ki chhori
sun sun baat gawaar naar
tu thi gwaale ki chhori
maine hi bana diya tujhko
thaanedar ki gori
maine hi bana diya tujhko
thaanedar ki gori
kaam karey na. . .
balam keesi ka howe thaanedar
ho oo thaanedar
ho oo thaanedar
kaam karey na. . .
balam keesi ka howe thaanedar
aath pehar jo sajag bharey
aur raakhe haath kataar
aath pehar jo sajag bharey
aur raakhe haath kataar
kab piye wo jal ka pyaala
julm kar daala
sitam kar daala hoye
dilli waale
oy dilli waale saab
gajab kar daala re
dilli waale saab
dilli waale saab

thaanedar ki biwi hona badey bhaag ki baat
thaanedar ki biwi hona badey bhaag ki baat
sau sau karey salaam padosan
tujhko din aur raat
sau sau karey salaam padosan
tujhko din aur raat
ye saawan ka. . .
ye saawan ka mast mahina
ye rim jhim barsaat
ho oo barsaat
ho oo barsaat
ye saawan ka mast mahina
ye rim jhim barsaat
kisey chaahiye paas padosan
jab ho baalam saath
kisey chaahiye paas padosan
jab ho baalam saath
jab pyaar ne hosh sambhaala
julm kar daala
sitam kar daala hoye
dilli waale
oy dilli waale saab
gajab kar daala re
dilli waale saab
dilli waale saab
