Hullo Atuldom

Vani Jairam (30th November 1945- 4th February 2023) was a playback singer who was known to easily adapt to any difficult composition & vocal range. She was the youngest artist to be awarded the “Sangeet Peet Samman”. She won the National Film Awards for Best Female Playback Singer three times and also has won State Government awards from the states of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. In 2012, she was honoured with the ‘Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award – South’ for her achievements in South Indian film music. She has recorded songs in most Indian languages except Sanskrit. She was well versed in various forms of music -Carnatic, Hindustani, thumri, ghazal, and bhajan. Apart from singing, she was also a songwriter, composer, and painter.

She was born “Kalaivani”, in Vellore, Madras Presidency of British India into a family of classically trained musicians as the fifth daughter among six daughters & three sons. She was attracted to Hindi film songs as she used to be glued to Radio Ceylon. It seems she used to memorize and reproduce the entire orchestration of the songs that used to repeatedly play on the Radio. At the age of 8 she is said to have given her first public performance on All India Radio Madras.

She was employed in a bank at the time of her marriage & managed a transfer to Mumbai. She started learning Hindustani Classical, on being persuaded by her husband, from Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan of Patiala Gharana, & gave a public concert in 1969. Around the same time, she was introduced to music composer Vasant Desai who was recording with Kumar Gandharva (at that time). He heard her voice & she got to sing along with Kumar Gandharva in that album which was well received by the Marathi audience. Her road to popular film music began in 1971 with “Guddi” for which her mentor Vasant Desai was the music director. She went on to sing for Chitragupta, Naushad, Madan Mohan, O.P. Nayyar, R.D. Burman etc. etc. Films from South India came into her kitty from 1973 when she recorded for music director S.M. Subbaiah Naidu, unfortunately neither that film nor that song was released. Her first released Tamil song was for a 1973 film which was with T M Soundararajan. 1973 also saw her sing for the Malayalam film ‘Swapnam’ under Salil Choudhary music direction. She was popular in Telugu, Kannada, Odia, Gujarathi, Marathi, Marwari, Bengali, Bhojpuri, etc.

She has around 250 songs to her name in Hindi films (I am clueless about her non-film songs). She is most remembered for her rendition of Meera bhajans under Pt. Ravi Shankar’s music direction for the 1979 film “Meera” for which she won her first Filmfare award of Best Playback Singer in 1980.

I could have easily picked a song from that film for today’s post- there are still 6 songs of that film to choose from. But I am also trying to remember the popular music director of the 1980s & part of 1990s with this post. Hindi film music lovers love him for many of his compositions but still hate the songs that he gave us post 1983. He was one music director who we just cannot ‘close our ears or eyes to’. Some purists didn’t like what he served us but we cannot deny that his ‘tohfa tohfa tohfa’, ‘nainon mein sapna’, ‘I am a disco dancer’, etc are popular even today. We love his ‘maathe ki bindiya boley’ as much as ‘sainyya bina ghar soona soona’. And the list of ‘loved songs’ by this composer may be bigger than the list of ‘not-so-loved’ songs.

I am sure readers would have guessed that I am referring to Bappi Lahiri who was born as Alokesh Lahiri in 1952 on November 27th. His parents were (also) singers & musicians. His maternal family included the Ganguly brothers i.e. Kishore Kumar, Anoop Kumar, Ashok Kumar were his maternal uncles & Amit Kumar is a cousin. He came to Mumbai at the age of 19, & first gave music to a Bengali film. His first Hindi film was ‘Nanha Shikaari’ (1973).
In my personal opinion the best song by Bappi Lahiri that Vani Jairam sang was this, which is already posted on our blog.

Today for Vani Jairam’s birth anniversary (she would have been 78) we shall have a song from the 1985 release “Wafadaar”. The songs of the film were written by Indeevar & Bappi Lahiri was the music director. It starred Rajnikanth, Padmini Kolhapure, Vijeta Pandit, Anupam Kher, Sushma Seth, Satyen Kappu, Ashalata Wabgaonkar, Asrani, Paintal, Dinesh Hingoo, Viju Khote & Kadar Khan with Shakti Kapoor. The film was directed by Dasari Narayan Rao & produced by Shrikant Nahata. I am sure it must have been a remake of some Telugu or Tamil film.

With two heroines the story may have been a love-triangle but the main plot was Anupam Kher plotting to obtain Sushma Seth’s wealth by wooing & marrying her daughter Padmini Kolhapure. For this he take the help of his servant Rajnikanth, who catches on to Anupam Kher’s intentions and protects Padmini, falls in love with her & marries her to happily-live-ever-after SIMPLE!

Let us listen to this melodious song in Vani Jairam’s voice which gives us a very different (for those times) Bappi Lahiri.

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Missing movies of 1973-2)
——————————————-——————————

As the title of this post suggests, today we are going to add another movie from the year ‘1973’ which so far is missing from the blog.

We are heading towards an interesting journey as we progress in this series. We are going to listen to songs from lesser known movies (obviously). These songs have been composed and sung by lesser known artistes too. If not lesser known these are artistes who failed to make it big in Hindi movies. In this process we sometimes come across songs from forgotten movies that were nevertheless popular those days before they were forgotten.

Let us move to today’s post.

Today we are going to listen to a song from the movie “Aashiq C.I.D-1973”. It was directed by M. Mallikarjun Rao for ‘Majestic Art Movies, Madras’.

The cast of this movie included Krishna, Bharati, Prabhakar Reddy, Rajbabu, Mukkamala, Gummadi, Venira Addai Nirmala, Vijaylalita, Jyotilakshmi, Jaggrao and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 17.09.1973.

(I am not aware if this movie was a dubbed movie from a ‘south’ movie. HFGK Vol-V doesn’t mention anything about this).

This movie has five songs. They were written by Shrikant and composed by Mahadevan- M. Rangarao.

Here is the list of songs of this movie:-

S.no. Song Title Singer/s
01 Aashiq main anjaana Manna Dey
02 Mera mast ye roop sanam..nazar chaar kar le Vani Jairam
03 Itna manna tu mera Manna Dey, S. Janaki

05 Tauba kaam se aayi hoon Vani Jairam

Today’s song is sung by Vani Jairam.

I would request readers to please share any information about this movie as well as its songs.

With today’s song ‘Aashiq C.I.D-1973’ makes its debut on the blog…

#Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (missing movies of 1973 – A tribute to Vasant Desai)
————————————

Today, 22nd December 2022 is forty-seventh remembrance anniversary of yesteryear’s legendary music composer Vasant Desai. He was born on 9th June 1912 and passed away on 22nd December 1975 at the age of 63 years.

For me, Vasant Desai is one of the great names which I am admirer of and have always been fascinated by his wonderful musical creations. I have been listening to the songs he composed for Hindi Film Music. There is a long list of my favorites of him from Hindi as well as Marathi film music. Today as a tribute to him I am presenting a song from a movie ‘Grahan’ (1973). Some sources also mention this movie as from the year 1976. I think this was an obscure movie of its time. No video of this movie is available on online platform, I guess.

‘Grahan’ (alias ‘The Acceptance’) was directed by Manjul Prabhat for AK Films, Bombay. It had Nutan, Basant Choudhary, Suhasini Muley, Subhash Ghai, Ajay, Vaishali, Shashi Puri, BB Bhalla and others. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 29.12.1973.

This movie has two songs composed by Vasant Desai. Lyrics for one song are taken from a ‘traditional folk song’. The song being presented today is penned by Vasant Desai himself. Mahendra Kapoor and Vani Jairam are the voices used for the songs in this movie. Today’s song is sung by Vani Jairam.

As mentioned above only the audio of this song is available.

I would request knowledgeable readers who have any information about this movie or have watched this movie in those years to share as possible here.

Let us now listen to today’s song and pay our tributes to Vasant Desai.

With this song this movie ‘Grahan’ makes its debut on the blog.

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 168 # Missing Films of 1972 – 13#
——————————————

We are adding the missing movies of 1972 to the blog. The year 1972 saw 131 movies released in Hindi language. Out of this we have 110 movies presented on the blog. From the remaining twenty-one movies songs for six movies seems to be unavailable (one partially available) as of now. And there is no information about the songs of ‘five’ movies. One movie ‘Zaroorat’ was without songs. That leaves us with nine movies which area yet to be introduced on the blog and those will be part of this series in coming days.

Today’s movie is ‘Ratna Daaku’. It is one hundred and eleventh movie of this year 1972 to be presented on the blog. The film is directed by KSR Das for PNR Pictures, Madras. It had SV Ranga Rao, Krishna, Chandramohan, S Ranga Rao, Dulipala, Narayan Rao, Raja Sulochana, V Nirmala, Ameeta, Baby Dolly and others. Jyothi Laxmi and Jayshree T. make special appearances in this movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 29.12.1972.

This movie had five songs written by BR Tripathi. Music was composed by Satyam. The list of songs in this movie is as given below (as provided in HFGK).

Sl. No. Song Title Singer/s
01 Haa, Aaj To Mera Ho Ja Tu, Chhod Ke Yoon Re Naa Jaa Tu Vani Jairam
02 O H Oho Aa Meri Meesri Ki Meethhi Dali, Manna Dey
03 Rataiyya Baba, Ramjaniya Baba, Har Dil Ki Ye Lailaa Manna Dey, Vani Jairam
04 Chakku Ghusaa Re, Zehar Se Bujhaa Re, Vani Jairam
05 Ye To Pyaaraa Roz Ho … Happy Birthday To You S.P. Balasubramaniam, Vani Jairam

Today’s song is sung by Vani Jairam and only audio of the song is available as of now. I think this movie must have been an obscure movie of its time, so videos of this movie seem to be unavailable on internet.

Let us have a look on the list of movies of 1972 alphabetically after adding the today’s movie. For brevity the list given below includes the list of movies missing on the blog and list of all movies from the last post from movie ‘Pistolwaali’ to today’s movie song-post.

Today’s song is from the 197’ movie ‘Do Gaj Zameen Ke Neeche’.

I vaguely remember that when I was still a child our senior friends used to discuss about this movie. In the ‘horror’ ‘genre’ of movies, this movie was a first of its kind I think (knowledgeable readers can throw light on this). This was the first by Ramsay Brothers in the horror category.

This movie is a making a debut on the blog today, and it is one of the movies from the year 1972 that was missing from the blog till now. Alphabetically this is the 38th movie of 1972 as per HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980). Following are the details.

Do Gaj Zameen Ke Neeche R Tulsi Shyam Sapan-Jagmohan 29.08.1972

Making a debut on the blog today

3

As mentioned earlier, from the above list of movies songs for ‘Aakraant’, ‘Bachche Mere Saathi’ and ‘Bharat Darshan’ seems to be unavailable as of now.

‘Do Gaj Zameen Ke Neeche’ was directed by R Tulsi Shyam for Ramsay Film, Bombay. This was a suspense movie. It had Surendra Kumar, Pooja, Imtiaz, Shobhna (New Discovery), Satyen Kappu, Smita, Mayank, Habib, Dhoomal and others. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 29.08.1972.

This movie had three songs written by Naqsh Lyallpuri and composed to music by Sapan-Jagmohan. The list of songs in this movie is as given below (as provided in HFGK).

SNo Song Title Singer/s
01 Main hoon teri joganiya shyam, Vani Jairam
02 Ik panchhi ban ke main udti jaaun, Vani Jairam
03 Pii kea aye gharwa bedardi aadhi aadhi raat Asha Bhonsle

I guess that today’s song is on screen performed by actress Shobhna. Also seen in the picturisation is one actor and few child artists who I am unable to identify. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

Let us now listen to the today’s song …

With the today’s song the movie ‘Do Gaj Zameen Ke Neeche’ makes its debut on the blog.

Hullo Atuldom

“Khoon Ka Badla Khoon” (1978) had songs by the hit team of S.H. Bihari- O.P.Nayyar; the team that gave us “kajra mohabbatwala”, “haule haule chalo more saajna”, taarif karoon kya uski”, “bahut shukriya badi meherbaani” and many more such hits in the ’60s.

“KKBK” had Vani Jairam, Pushpa Pagdhare, Uttara Kelkar, Mohd. Rafi for playback singers. It was directed by K. Parvez a.k.a Kalpataru and produced by Ratan Mohan. It had seven or eight songs of which the blog has only one song.

The cast included Bindu, Asha Sachdev, Mahendra Sandhu, Vinod Khanna, Ajit, Jayshree T., Padma Khanna, Iftekar, Imtiaz Khan, Sudhir etc. Seeing that the movie had so many actresses who could dance, makes it clear why OPN used three different female playback singers.

“KKBK” seems to be one of the movies where Asha Sachdev must have been the main female protagonist or to put it simple -the heroine. Also the poster of the movie suggests that Vinod Khanna may have been paired with Bindu
Here is the next song from ‘KKBK’ on the occasion of Omkar Prasad Nayyar’s 14th remembrance day. It is sung by Vani Jairam. It was and is frequently heard on radio. Vani Jairam had four solos in the movie of which this is the most popular. I found a very short video which suggests that Asha Sachdev is out to woo Mahedra Sandhu who seems to be some kind of under-cover officer. Also the video shows Ajit giving instructions to his ‘No 9’ etc as was the norm in all movies featuring Ajit in that period of time.

The poster that is accompanying the longer version of the song, as is available on youtube shows a rather smart and handsome Vinod Khanna, trying to shoot some one even as he is on the run.
The brief synopsis of the film that is available on IMDB.com says this: The story-line of the film revolves around a Crime Branch’s Officer and a courageous girl from another agency, they are appointed to catch a criminal gang who leaves a trade mark at their every crime scene.

So, that means it was a run-of-the-mill masala thriller that should have been entertaining for the masses. I would love to know how it fared at the box-office.
This is song number 184 of S.H. Bihari and 484 of O P Nayyar who should be thanked for the legacy that is there for us to enjoy
