Today’s song is from a film Pahela Pyaar-1947, which has a halo of speculation and is shrouded in mystery.

This film was made under the banner of Sagar Movietone. Sagar Movietone was started as a film making company in 1931 by Chimanlal Desai and Dr. Ambalal Patel. Both of them had their Distribution and Exhibition business in Bangalore. Dr. Patel left Sagar Movietone and returned to his original business of Distribution. (He started his company Sudama Productions and made 3 Hindi films in 1940 and 1941). Desai continued with Sagar till 1940, making 52 Hindi talkie films, 4 Gujarati, 5 Tamil, 3 Telugu and 1 each Punjabi and Bangla films.

He then Closed Sagar and joined National studios with Fazalbhoy and Tatas to make films. After only 3 films, Desai left and established his own Amar pictures. (National studios made 16 films before closing down.)After making 6 films in Amar pictures, Chimanlal made Pahela Pyar-1947 again under Sagar Movietone’s banner and also later made a Gujarati film Kariyawar-1948 too for Sagar movietone. After this Chimanlal Desai went back to his original business of Distribution and Exhibition.

The moot question is why and how after closing down Sagar movietone in 1940, 2 films were made under this banner again ? We could not find any answer for this mystery. I personally spoke to Shri Biren Kothari ji, author of the excellent research book ” Sagar Movietone”, but he could not get any answer to this question either from the surviving members of Chimanlal Desai family or any contemporary documents. So, one more riddle added to the list of unsolved mysteries of Hindi film history !

The film was directed by A.P.Kapoor, a veteran from the early cinema. A.P. aka Anand Prasad Kapoor was a well known director of early cinema. He had directed 14 silent films before trying his hand at a Talkie film. He was born in 1892 at benares. After matriculation, he came to Bombay and joined the film industry doing odd jobs. His first silent film as a director was Fairy of the Flute-1927 made by Sharda Film Co. His first talkie film as a director was Radhesham-1932, jointly directed by R.L.Shorey. This was a film made in Lahore.

He directed 18 talkie films. He also acted in 2 films. He wrote 32 songs in 3 films as a Lyricist. He also sang 6 songs in 5 films. His last film as a director was Chor-1950. At this stage he realised that his old style was no more acceptable with the new set up. So he retired. A.P.Kapoor died on 16-9-1966 at Bombay.

The Music Director of this film was Premnath (not the famous actor. He was different). The cast of the film was Vaqnmala, Agha jan,Sulochana Chatterjee, David,K.N.Singh, Bibbo etc. This was the last film for Bibbo in india. She migrated to pakistan. This was also the film for Agha as a hero. After this he started doing character roles and as a Comedian. For even Vanmala, this was her last film as a heroine.

Agha (21-3-1914 to 30-4-1992) was of Persian descent. He was born in Poona. He was known for comic roles and modeled himself on Bob Hope’s style of acting. He appeared in 328 Hindi films in his career between 1935 and 1986. His son, Jalal Agha, also became an actor, most known for the song, Mehbooba Mehbooba from the film Sholay-75.

Agha confessed that he went to school for just three days, “that was as long as I could stand it”. He spent time “mooching” around Poona Race course, as he wanted to become a jockey and loved horses. Later in life Agha owned 2 Race Horses and was seen on Bombay and Poona Racecourses very often.

Agha came to Bombay and joined his neighbourhood drama group. His interest in acting took him to films where in 1933 he started as a production manager in Kanwal Movietone.

Agha’s first film was Kanwal Movietone’s Stree Dharma also called Painted Sin (1935) starring Mehtab and Nazir. However, his films Karwan-e-Husn (1935), Wadia’sRangila Mazdoor (1938), and Anuradha (1940) helped him gain recognition as a comic actor. He acted in Kikubhai Desai’s (Manmohan Desai’s father) Circus Ki Sundari (1941) which was popular and this helped in getting lead roles in films like Muqabala (1942), Laheri Cameraman (1944) and Taxi Driver (1944). His most active years were from the 1930s to 1960s.

Agha even sang 6 songs in 5 films, namely Stree Dharma-35, Toofan Express-38, Muqabala-42, Piya ghar aaja-47 and Meri Asha-50. He was the Hero in Bombay Talkies film Jwar Bhata-44, in which Dilip Kumar made a debut. Dilip was the secondary Hero. This fact Agha used to always tell. Later on ofcourse the picture reversed and Agha became a tailpiece to Dilip in his films. He had acted in 328 films in all.

Agha had 3 daughters and one son-Jalal Agha. His wife’s name was Masuma.

Agha died on 30 April 1992 of a heart attack in Pune, Maharashtra, India. He was 78 years old. He was survived by three daughters and one son, Jalal Agha. Jalal Agha died on 5 March 1995, in New Delhi, also of a heart attack. Agha was only once nominated for Filmfare Best supporting actor’s award for Ghunghat-60.

One funny thing about today’s song is that there is another song from the film ” Captain India”-1960, having the same mukhada, word by word, but the lyrics, Lyricist and the singer are different. Today’s song is sung by Shamshad Begum and is written by Balam Pardesi.
