My last post on the blog was on 7th August 2016, and the last contribution I shared to Atul ji was on 11th Aug, so it’s already over a month that either there was a post by me on the blog or I had shared a new write-up to Atul ji.

However the musical journey was on. I was searching for songs on various themes that I wish to share and also the new write-ups that I wish to share in future.

There are cases in history, where Talent alone has not helped. The Luck factor plays a vital role in one’s life. But then, what is Luck ? Call it opportunities, recognition, fame, money…. call it what you may like to, but Luck is a factor.

I had the good fortune of talking over the phone to Shri Srinivas Chary, courtesy Shri Arunkumar Deshmukh, in the last week as well as this week. Srinivas ji was a Mumbaikar till the middle of the 1970s when he decided to settle down in Chennai. He is a member of RMIM (Rec. Music. Indian. Music). During our talk, Srinivas ji told me about RMIM meeting held in April 2006 at Bangalore wherein, among others things, 2 CDs containing some rare film and non-film songs of Talat Mehmood were presented. He was associated with the preparation of the CDs and he contributed some of the songs of Talat Mehmood from his collections. He said that songs from Talat CDs as well as songs from some other CDs are available on Dr Surjit Singh’s Website.

When you listen to today’s song, you will realize why Talat’s voice was called Velvety. This soulful, sad farewell song by Talat Mehmood is from the film “Mera Salaam”-1957.

The Tamil version had 11 songs composed by Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy. Hindi dubbed version had 8 songs written by P L Santoshi (7) and Indeevar (1) which were composed by Gyan Dutt. Today’s song is unique. It is from the film Laadlaa-54.

One would like to know what is so unique about this song. The answer is that this is the only song in Hindi film music history which is sung by the combination of these four great singers. They are Mohd. Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Shamshad Begum and Asha Bhonsle. As far as I know, It was for the first and last time that these four singers came together to sing a song. Mohd. Rafi features in few songs combining four singers, but not these our four singers. I am amazed how composer Vinod thought of this combination in the first place !

In the year 2014 I had done a series called “Chaandni Raaten”. The series remained sort of incomplete, and now it is too far back to restart it. As is my practice, I give a list of all songs featuring in a particular series in the last song post, even that remained to be done. I had planned to post a few more songs, which were suggested and were suitable to the theme. But that was not to be. So I am posting here one of those songs as a closure. This song was found for me by one of the regular visitors to the blog ‘ blufire ji’, as I was looking for a Talat Mehmood song for the series.
