Today (20 November 2021) is the birthday of Minu Purushottam (DoB 20 November 1944). She made her debut in Hindi movies in 1963 with “Tajmahal”(1963), under the music direction of Roshan. The song was Naa naa naa re haath na lagaana , a duet alongwith Suman Kalyanpur. The lilting song from “Ye Raat Phir Na aayegi”(1966), Huzoorewaala jo ho izaajat , a duet with Asha Bhonsle, is quite a popular song to this day. Both songs incidentally were picturised on Helen and Madhumati (Helen clone).
Though overshadowed by the bigger name playback singers, she still has sung songs that were popular on their days. Unable to make much headway in Hindi movies, she switched over to non film songs. Later, she migrated to USA and lived there at Houston where she taught music.
On the occasion of her birthday, here is a song from “Qasam”(1976). This movie was directed by Ramesh Bedi for Kunwar Films Bombay. The movie had Radha Saluja, Satish Kaul, Laxmi Chhaya, Ranjeet, Nana Palsikar, Chandrashekhar, Vasti, Mohan Sherry, Junior Mehmood, Paintal, Ravi Kumar, Renu, Sukhbeer Kaur, Pratap, Darshan, Master Avinash, Baby Geeta etc in it.
This “social” movie had six songs in it. Two of these songs were duts sung by Minu Purushottam and Rafi.
Here is one of these songs. The song is penned by Mahendra Dehalvi. Music is composed by Surinder Kohli.
A poor quality partial video of the song is available. It shows that the song is picturised on Laxmi Chhaayaa ( I hope I have identified her correctly) and Ranjeet (villain in Hindi movies those days). I request our knowledgeable readers to help confirm/ refute my identification of the lady in the picturisation.
The audio contains the full song. The lady asks her lover to take her to Kashmir, or at least to nearby Chandigarh or Amritsar, but her lover is so ridiculously “kanjoos” that he would not agree to take her out of the village. 🙂
With this fogotten song, which is quite hummable to listen to, “Qasam”(1976) makes its debut in the blog.
