#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 106 # Tribute to Music Director Shankar #

Today 15th October is (15.10.1922) is ninety-eighth Birth Anniversary of the genius music director Shankar Singh Raghuvanshi or known popularly as Shankar of Shankar-Jaikishan duo.

He was born on 15th October’1922 at Hyderabad Deccan in the then state of Hyderabad.
And left this mortal world at the age of sixty-four on 26th April’1986 at Bombay.

As a tribute to him I am presenting a song from the 1977 movie ‘Duniyaadaari’.

One beautiful song from this movie has been posted on the blog on 15th October’2012 which was ‘naao kaaghaz ki gehraa hai paani’ …

As we are all aware the golden period of Shankar-Jaikishan was already over as the HFM embarked in the decade of seventies. The lot of R.D. Burman, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Kalyanji-Anandji and many others were already producing chart burster music that was getting popular among the masses.

I would like to reproduce the ‘text’ here what Atul ji had said about Shankar-Jaikishan and the ending of their ‘era’ in his article while posting the first song of this movie ‘Duniyaadaari-1977’.

Shankar Jaikishan, the most dominant music directors during the golden era of Hindi movie music ruled the roost for two decades from 1949 to 1968 till R D Burman rose like a meteor and changed the rules of the game.

Many other developments took place during that time. One of those developments was that Jaikishan died in 1970 and that way the Shankar Jaikishan jodi was physically separated. Moreover, “Mera Naam Joker” (1970) flopped and after that Raj Kapoor made up his mind to overhaul his musical team making a clen break from his tried and trusted musical team of the past two decades.

Shankar continued to compose music under the name of Shankar Jaikishan. But the time passed, assignments from top banners gradually dried up and Shankar ended up composing music for lesser banners. His songs from mid 1970s onwards were not quite as popular as the music of his heydays.

Nevertheless, Shankar composed some memorable songs even in his second innings as a solo music director, even if they are not as well-known as the music of his earlier decades.

Today’s movie is one such movie whose songs are quite nice and were popular I think (since I have not watched this movie) and other notable movies to mention I think is ‘Sanyaasi-1975’ whose songs were heard everywhere on radio and loudspeakers. Songs of ‘Resham Ki Dori-1974’ were also nice songs if we consider them as composed by Shankar solely.

In the previous month while paying our tributes to Jaikishan on his Remembrance Day I had mentioned about the year 1971 and had wrote that; -“Shankar Jaikishan ruled the music charts in 1971 with their ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhaana’ ranking top of the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala’ list. ”

In 1971 Shankar Jaikishan composed music for as many as seventeen movies out of 115 released movies that year. Moreover there was an un-released movie as well viz. ‘Bombay Talkie-1971’ making it a total of eighteen movies for the year for Shankar Jaikishan.

That was for 1971. Let us now have a look on the number of movies in which the name of Shankar-Jaikishan appeared as Music Director from 1972 to till 1977.
(we will again have a look on their filmography from 1978 to 1986 in future posts).

Let us now enjoy today’s song … On screen Asrani and Aruna Irani are performing and lip syncing the song in the voices of Amit Kumar and Asha Bhonsle respectively.

The song was embedded deep in my subconscious memory and I had forgotten about it. It was only during last year when I was in Kenya that at some instance I broke into humming (singing could also be the correct word? 😊 ). After that I looked for its details and got to know that it is from this movie ‘Duniyaadaari-1977’.

Let us now enjoy this song and pay our tributes to the genius music director Shankar today. I hope you will enjoy today’s song …

I would also request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

(Note: – for those interested to watch this movie, it is slated for premier on ‘YouTube’ on 31.10.2020)

Song-Teen baje bola thha baj gaye chaar (Duniyaadaari)(1977) Amit Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-M G Hashmat, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Aruna Irani

Priyaa aa

hey arey arey arey ha ..
arey ye kya kar rahe ho
wo main nahin hoon

hya … oh
to Priyaa kyun nahin aayi

mujhe kya maaloom
usne to kahaa thha ke main teen baje aaungi

ho teen baje bola thha
baj gaye chaar
aur kitni der tak
karoon intezaar
arrey teen baje bola thha
baj gaye chaar
aur kitni der tak
karoon intezaar
ghadiyaan intezaar ki
guzaar ke dikhaaunga
aaj mil jaaye to
udaa ke le jaaunga
teen baje bola thha
baj gaye chaar
aur kitni der tak
karoge intezaar
hey ae
teen baje bola thha
baj gaye chaar
aur kitni der tak
karoge intezaar
lagtaa hai phans gayi
aaj nahin aayegi
duniyaa se daregi to
pyaar kya nibhaayegi

hey ae teen baje bolaa thha
baj gaye chaar

chaar paanch chhe kya
saat bajenge
din dhalegaa yahin
raat hogi ee ee

arey apnaa to bistar
yahin pe lagegaa
jab talak naa
mulaaqaat hogi ee
haan aan aan
pyaar ke raaste mein
subah tak
khadi duniyaa ki deewaar hogi

duniyaa ki deewaar ko
tod ke dikhaaungaa
aaj mil jaaye to
udaa ke le jaaunga
teen baje bola thha
baj gaye chaar
aur kitni der tak
karoge intezaar
badi natkhat hai wo
nakhre dikhaayengi
pyaar jitnaa karoge
wo utnaa tadpaayegi

hey hey
teen baje bola thha
baj gaye chaar

haan aa
ye lo uski chitthi ee

chitthi mein likha hai
raat mein aana
aur andhere mein seetie
ee bajaanaa aa
dil ke mandir mein ghanti
ghar se niklegi kar ke
bahaanaa aa
aa lekin guru hai gharwaale
unki nazron se khud ko bachaana

arey guruon ka mahaaguru
ban ke dikhaaunga
aaj mil jaaye to
udaa ke le jaaunga
hee oo
teen baje bola thha
baj gaye chaar
aur kitni der tak
karoge intezaar
lagtaa hai phans gayi
aaj nahin aayegi
duniyaa se daregi to
pyaar kya nibhaayegi

arey teen baje bola thha
baj gaye chaar
nahin aayegi to kya karoge
uski chaukhat pe jaake maroonga
naa naa naa naa
tum maroge to
mera kya hogaa

hee hee
o pirchhi gaana aa ??
hee hee
pirchhi gaanaa aa ??

sunke aawaaz meri
dhadkan ki
teri aankhon mein aaya
kyun paani ee ee ee
pyaar maine
chhupaana to chaahaa
aansoo kah gaye
dil ki kahaani ee ee
aakhri saans tak
tere saath main
ab guzaarungi ye zindagaani

arey ban gayi baat
ab baaraat leke aaungaa
aaj mil gayi hai
udaa ke le jaaunga
aaj mil gayi hai
udaa ke le jaaunga
laa la la la laa laa
laa la la la la laa laa

aaj mil gayi hai
udaa ke le jaaunga
laa la la la laa laa
laa la la la la laa laa

aaj mil gayi hai
udaa ke le jaaunga
laa la la la laa laa
laa la la la la laa laa

aaj mil gayi hai
udaa ke le jaaunga
laa la la la laa laa
laa la la la la laa laa

aaj mil gayi hai
udaa ke le jaaunga
laa la la la laa laa
laa la la la la laa laa

aaj mil gayi hai
udaa ke le jaaunga
laa la la la laa laa
laa la la la la laa laa

The lyrics of most Sajjad Hussain compositions are serious affairs, but this song is an exception. It is a love song alright, but here the lovers have more practical matters to consider instead of talking poetry and astronomy. Mumtaz, who has come to meet Premnath, her lover, is getting delayed and she has to leave. And that is what this song is all about.
