“Raaja Jaani”(1972) was produced by Madan Mohla and directed by Mohan Sehgal for Seven Arts Pictures, Bombay. This “social” (1972)movie had Dharmendra, Hema malini, Nadira, Sajjan, Premnath, Prem Chopra, Johnny Walkar, Durga Khote, Rajan Haksar, HeeraLal, Lata Sinha, Madhup Sharma, Jankidass, Bhushan Tiwari, Kamaldeep, C.S.Dubey, Pal Sharma, Bindu, Manmohan, Helen etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. Four songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the fifth song from “Raaja Jaani”(1972) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Lata. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The picturisation shows Hema Malini and Durga Khite seated on Royal thrones and then we find Helen dancing. Next we see Hema Malini standing near Helen and lip syncing this song while lots of people, including Premnath, Dharmendra and Prem Chopra looking on while seated on their chairs.

I have not seen the movie but going by the picturisation, it seems that Hema Malini plays double role in he movie and the movie. The movie, despite its chaalu story and chaalu music managed to do well at the box office. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra who felt that this was the last remaining song of the movie. No, another chaalu song from this song, which was quite popular during its time is still left to be covered. 🙂

Song-Mubarak ho tujhe ae dil (Raja Jaani)(1972) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

mubaarak ho tujhe ae dil

hamaara tum na dekhoge
nazar kyun pher lee

kahin par toot’te hain dil
kahin bajti hai shehnaayee
mubaarak ho tujhe ae dil
qayaamat ki ghadi aayee
khushi se aankh bhar aayee
mubaarak ho tujhe ae dil

magar ae hamsafar tumne
jahaan par saath chhodaa hai
ye rastaa hai ke hai manzil

———————————————
Blog ten year challenge (2009-2019)- Song number 5
———————————————
Today is 8 february 2019. When I looked back at the movies whose songs were covered in the blog ten years ago on 8 february 2009, I found that seven songs from seven different movies were covered on that day. Six of these movies have been YIPPEED by now. The only movie, which still has a few songs left to be covered in the blog is “Gomti Ke Kinaatre”(1972).

“Gomti Ke Kinaare”(1972) was directed by Sawan Kumar for Mercury Productions, Bombay. This “social” movie had Meena Kumari, Mumtaz, Sameer, Rehman, Agha, Helen, Paintal, Asit Sen, Shyama, Chandrima Bhaduri, Tuntun, Daisy Irani, Master Alankar, Randheer, Sultan Mazhar, Manorama, Rajan Haksar, Nasreen, Lalita Kumari, Madhu, Aarti, Kamal, I S Johar etc in it, with special appearances by Jalal Agha and Mukri.

The movie had five songs in it. Three of these songs have been covered in the past.

This song is sung by Manna Dey and Asha Bhonsle. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.

The so0ng is picturised on Agha and Helen. It appears to be a fantasy song where Agha has a Jin of Alladin Chirag. The Jin, on the wishes of Agha makes Helen appear to perform a dance. That is my understanding of the picturisation of this song. I request our knowledgeable readers to tell us what is happening in this song.

The movie hade its debut in the blog on this day in 2009 when I was based at Jabalpur. Next song was posted in 2011 when I was based at Nagpur, and the third song was posted in 2017 when I was based at Izatnagar, Bareilly. Now I am covering the fourth song from the movie while I am based at another new place.

The movie has another song left in it. Have no fear. Now that I am aware that only one song is left in this movie, I will cover the song without waiting to get transferred to another place. 🙂

Missing Films of 1960s – 90
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

What a wonderful gem of a song this one is. The memory banks hold this from the radio listening days. Such a beautiful semi-classical creation, and also very popular in its time – I am amazed it has waited so long in the wings to make its place here on our blog.

The film is ‘Harishchandra Taramati’ from 1970. It is produced under the banner of Kala Mandal, Bombay and is directed by BK Adarsh. Star cast of this film is listed as Pradeep Kumar, Jaimala, Boby, BM Vyas, Jeevan, Shyama, Madan Puri, Tiwari, Bela Bose, Bipin Gupta, Helen, Madhumati, Jaishri Talpade, Tuntun, Sapru, Manorama, and Mehmood (Junior) etc.

The seven songs of this film are all written by Virendra Mishra and the music is created by Hridaynath Mangeshkar. The singing voice in this song is Lata ji, supported by chorus.

As I am checking the films from 1970, I came across this film, but it did not ring any bells at first. The mind is more familiar with the other film of same name from 1963, whose songs are penned by Kavi Pradeep. But then, as I checked the list of songs in this film, the mind sat up with a jerk when I read the title line of this song. All I could think of then was – WOW.

This song is such an exquisite creation, and such a pleasurable experience to listen. The opening verses simply capture the heart,

rimim jhimimwa
suno balamwa
naram garam hui saram
jhuke nainwa

For reference purposes, I checked the Raag-o-Pedia compiled by Shri KL Pandey. The listing informs us that this song is composed using three Raags – Bhairavi, Khamaaj and Malkauns.

As I started this post day before yesterday, I did not have access to the video of this song. Keen to know on whom this song is picturized, I started searching for this film. It turned out that although this film is more recent vintage than similar named films from 1952 and 1963, yet this one is more rare in terms of availability. After some messages exchanged with my other collector friends, I was able to secure the video clip of this song from one of them. The clip is not of good quality; it appears that it has been extracted from a VHS tape that has been over used. I have now uploaded this clip. Despite the poor quality, one can make out that this dance song is filmed on Helen, and a group of supporting dancers, and that Pradeep Kumar is the sole audience of this performance.

In the film, Pradeep Kumar plays the lead role of Raja Harishchandra. Sage Vishwamitra, who is jealous of his fame of truthfulness and righteousness, resolves to test the limits of Harishchandra’s good attributes. As the first step, he sends Menaka, the apsara from swarg lok to woo and enchant Harishchandra. Regulars will recall that Menaka is the same apsara whom Indra, the king of swarg lok, had sent to disturb the penance and meditation of Vishwamitra. In that episode, Vishwamitra had lost the battle, and was swayed by Menaka’s enchanting beauty. Now, he sends the very same apsara to sway the sensibility of Harishchandra. In the film, this episode is presented as a dream sequence.

Just listen to this song, as it makes its way through multiple ragas, all coming together for such a perfect listening experience. A wonderful re-discovery.

Missing Films of 1960s – 89
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The year that we are currently exploring is 1970. And I am surprised to be coming across so many films that at least I have not been familiar with. It would have been the period that listening to the radio would have already started. However, this film does not ring a bell at all.

The film that I introduce today is ‘Sau Saal Beet Gaye’. The obscurity of this film can also be estimated by the fact that even HFGK does not contain many details about this film. It contains a partial list of songs, and very little other information about the film itself. The banner name is identified as Natraj Productions. The lyricist name is listed as Indeewar, and the music director is identified as Usha Khanna.

Now, however, the film is available online. I reviewed the credits and gathered the following additional information. The star cast of the film is Ashok Kumar, Helen, Raj Mehra, Sajjan, Iftekhar, Pratima Devi, Chaman Puri and Mukri. The screenplay and dialogues are written by Ashok Kumar himself. The producer is Madan Chopra and the director is given as two names, indicating a duo – Ved-Madan. Possibly Madan is the same as the person identified as the producer.

I did not view the film in detail, only did a quick fast forward scan. Very interestingly, the lead romantic pair in this film is Ashok Kumar and Helen. The story is about two lovers meeting across the boundaries of life and death – in two different births. Quite familiar you might say. Yes, more than a handful of films come to mind that are based on this story outline.

Anyway, details in another post, maybe. Today’s song is a stage dance song performed by Helen. The male companion in this clip is not identified – most likely an unfamiliar junior artist who just appears in this song in the film. Helen works for a theater company owned by Iftekhar, who is the cousin brother of Ashok Kumar in the film. At the end of this song, Ashok Kumar and Helen are introduced, ostensibly for the first time, but there appears the first glimmer of a familiarity. And onward, the story unfolds.

The lyrics are from the pen of Indeewar and the music is by Usha Khanna. The singing voice is Asha Bhosle. A peppy and fast paced fun number that introduces Helen in this storyline. A Helen song is always a treat, and this one is no less. Listen and enjoy.

Blog Day : 3779 Post No. : 14759

For me, this is a crush that still endures – a crush that I have never gotten over. Since the days when I first saw her in ‘Talash’ (1969) – and the song – “Kar Le Pyaar Karne Ke Din Hain Yahi” – a part of me has always remained smitten with her image and her thoughts. Helen, aah Helen – the ultimate danseuse of the silver screen. Helen – whose art has established the gold benchmark as a dancer, for all measures – from the past, and maybe, forever in the future. For sincerely, till this time, no other dancer has come close to this ultimate – in grace, in innovation, in energy, in movement – in every aspect of this art form.

It is said that the classical dance forms of India, are probably the most expressive traditional dances. The dancers are coached to develop the enhanced expressions for all the human emotions. The artist is taught not just to exhibit a series of well coordinated movements, which of course is very pleasing to the senses, but it is imperative for them to also communicate the emotions through the facial expressions, body language and the finer movements like twitching and trembling of specific muscles and body parts. The art of the Kathak, Bharat Natyam, Khatakali, etc. is so very refined in this aspect, and the aspiring artists are trained from a very young age.

As far as I am aware, Helen simply started dancing in films (in her teens, as early as when she was 13). She probably has no formal training in any dance form. And yet, seeing Helen on screen, in all the dancing forms, is an experience that flows across and covers the entire spectrum of human emotions and human exchange. In a career that spans almost seven decades, from the end of 1940s to the present day, she has likely appeared in 600+ films, and has regaled the audiences with that many colors and flavors of practically any dance form that may exist on this planet – rhumba, prancing, conga, frolic, folk, swing, rock n’ roll, spin, skip, step, samba, kabuki, disco, cabaret, jive, jump, cha cha cha, foxtrot, cavort, flamenco, waltz, boogie, santoso, flit, jig, jitterbug, hustle, gambol, polka, hop, sway, bunny hop, tap, shimmy, careen, salsa, mambo etc. – and of course, lavani and bhangra too. 🙂

Seeing her in so many different avatars of dancing, one is convinced that rhythm is naturally ingrained into her, and that there is almost a divine intervention here that allows her to pick up any choreography and perform exceedingly pleasing movements to it. The expression of emotions come to her so naturally – and the graceful flow of movements that is so excellently effortless – when she is in front of the camera, she actually knows what she is into. Such realization in the mind brings about a natural performance that simply cannot be executed in any better way. Unlike many of her ilk that have also performed on the Indian screen – yes, she knows, she is fully aware of what she is into.

There are a handful of rare performances by her that are not accompanied by any song. One of the finest, and in my humble opinion, her best such performance is a songless dance from the film ‘Hulchul’ (1971). Folks may remember this stage dance – for the variety of dance forms that are packed into this maybe 9 or 10 minutes performance, the multiple emotions that flow through it, and the significant message this dance experience is attempting to convey. (I tried to bring on this dance clip to our blog, but Atul ji is uncertain whether it qualifies. 😉 Maybe, I will try again.)

For me and my puppy-love heart, Helen is an ageless wonder that I adore. Sweet sixteen – that is what she is in my books, and that is how she is going to be, always.

And that also brings up today the most appropriate song of hers – to wish her a very happy birthday. The film is ‘Toofaan’ from 1969. The words are from the pen of Akhtar Romani. Music for this peppy and well paced dance number is created by Daan Singh. The singing voice – Asha Bhosle, probably the longest lasting partnership of singing voice and dancing steps on the Hindi screen.

Sharing the screen with Helen in this song is Dara Singh, whose birth anniversary just came two days ago (19th Nov). With this song we also remember him – he would have been 90 this year.

The dance is a typical folk dance from north India, performed in a very rural setting. Just see how wonderfully, this ordained Queen of the Cabaret – how wonderfully she is executing this oh so typically a rural folk dance.

And the words of the mukhda,

laaga mohe ab ki baar
o baanke piya pandrah pe ek nayo saal

Dear Helen, always young, always fresh, always sixteen – always sweet sixteen – forever.

Song – Laaga Mohe Ab Ki Baar (Toofaan) (1969) Singer – Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Akhtar Romani, MD – Daan Singh

Lyrics

laaga mohe ab ki baar
o baanke piya pandrah pe ek nayo saal
laaga mohe ab ki baar
o baanke piya pandrah pe ek nayo saal
duniya pukaare solah baras ki
dekho chali re kataar
o baanke piya sun sun ke rang bhayo laal
laaga mohe ab ki baar
o baanke piya pandrah pe ek nayo saal

nainon mein kajra
zulfon mein gajra
haathon mein mehndi racha ke
gaalon pe laali
pairon mein paayal
maathe pe bindiya sajaa ke
dekhoon jo darpan awaaz aaye..e..e..e
dekhoon jo darpan awaaz aaye
khil ye gayo re singaar
o baanke piya sun sun ke rang bhayo laal
laaga mohe ab ki baar
o baanke piya pandrah pe ek nayo saal

logon ke darr se
mein apne ghar se
panghat mein ja na sakoon
panghat to kya
main apne hi angnaa
ghoonghat hataa na sakoon
ghoonghat jo sarke awaaz aaye..e..e..e
ghoonghat jo sarke awaaz aaye
hamri bhi kismat sanwaar
o baanke piya sun sun ke rang bhayo laal
laaga mohe ab ki baar
o baanke piya pandrah pe ek nayo saal
duniya pukaare solah baras ki
dekho chali re kataar
o baanke piya sun sun ke rang bhayo laal
laaga mohe ab ki baar
o baanke piya pandrah pe ek nayo saal

Hullo to all in Atuldom

Once upon a not-so-long a time ago the anniversary page on our blog said that Helen – the dancing diva – celebrates her birthday on 21st October and I had sent this song – “Lovelina, Aa Gaya Main“, from ‘Agent Vinod’ (1977) for the occasion. Then over the years we got enlightened that her birthdate was 21st November. And as I sit to write this, further enlightenment strikes – she turns 80 today!!!! WOW!!! And she has been entertaining us since she was 13, having appeared in ‘Awaara’ in 1951 – that is 67 years in public eye. Of course, the last time I saw her in front of the camera was on satellite television when she appeared on the chat show ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ along with another favourite of mine – Asha Parekh. And so far, the last film that she has appeared in is ‘Heroine’ (2012) which is directed by Madhur Bhandarkar and starred Kareena Kapoor in the main lead. In there she portrays the character of a film artiste who is past her prime and is forgotten by the industry.

But the truth is Helen is not a forgotten has-been as far as the industry and her fans are concerned. She is still remembered fondly whenever we hear songs that she had performed to. Her sprightly steps, her outfits which were never garish even when there were sequins and feathers stuck on them, her luxuriant hair done up in various styles – are somethings which no other dancer or actress has ever tried to copy. She was never called a plain item girl, she was always the supporting actress who had some substance to her role even if it was two or three songs, with a few emotional scenes and there were films she was the second heroine pining for the hero and would give up her love or life in the climax so that the lead pair could live HAPPILY EVER AFTER. She has had a HAPPILY EVER AFTER life personally too even though she is her husbands’ (Salim Khan) second wife, theirs is a one big happy family and all of her step children have bonded closely with her. She has an adopted daughter who was given a grand wedding in 2014 and is now a grandma to that girl’s child. Her family is growing and hope her happiness grows too.

‘Ram Balram’ is a 1980 movie produced by Tito and directed by Vijay Anand. The movie was an average success at the box office. It brought Jai (Amitabh) and Veeru (Dharmendra) together after a gap of five years – five years after the super successful ‘Sholay’ (1975). ‘Ram Balram’ was the story of two ‘chachere bhais’ (cousins) who have a score to settle with Ajit – another of their chacha – who is responsible for all the calamities that struck their family. There is also a nautch girl – Tarabai (Helen) – who has some axe to grind against Ajit. As the movie moves to the climax, we have the brothers and Tarabai reaching their goals but in the melee Tarabai dies but not before seeing her daughter (Zeenat Aman) happy and in love with Ram (Dharmendra). Today’s song is a typical ‘trying to distract the villains’ henchmen’. The song is sung by Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle and Dilraj Kaur. It has both Zeenat Aman and Helen dressed in sarees (unusual for them) dancing a typical Dharmendra dance. The song was written by Anand Bakshi.

I had been reserving this song for a rainy day- for a time when I write a last-minute post. And so here it is to wish both Zeenat Aman (had her birthday on 19th– turned 67) and Helen a very happy birthday.

Song – Balram Ne Bahut Samjhaaya Par Ram Ne Dhoka Khaaya (Ram Balram) (1980) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle, Dilraj Kaur, Lyrics – Anand Bakshi, MD – Laxmikant Pyaarelal
Asha Bhosle + Dilraj Kaur
Mohammed Rafi + Asha Bhosle + Dilraj Kaur

Lyrics

balram ne bahut samjhaaya
balram ne bahut samjhaaya
par ram ne dhokha khaya
ab to ram hi jaan bachaaye
bachaaye
beda paar lagaaye
ab to ram hi jaan bachaaye
beda paar lagaaye
jo hona tha ho gaya
jo hona hai ho jaaye
ab to ram hi jaan bachaaye
beda paar lagaaye
ab to ram hi jaan bachaaye
beda paar lagaaye

hum pinjre ke panchhi
pinjre ke panchhi
hum pinjare ke panchhi
hum se kitni door bahaarein
door bahaarein
aao mil kar sochen
mil kar sochen
aao mil kar sochen
apni bigdi aap sawaarein
teri saari baatein jaisi lakdi ki talwaarein
lakdi ki talwaarein
lakdi ki talwaar to
talwaar to
mushkil mein kaam na aaye
ab to ram hi jaan bachaaye
beda paar lagaaye
ab to ram hi jaan bachaaye
beda paar lagaaye

ho gore mukh pe zulf ye kali
naagan si lehraaye
naagan se rehna door sapere
tujhe das na jaaye
jaan hatheli par jo rakhe
apne pas wo aaye
aane wale aa gaye
aa gaye
dil dhadke haye haye
ab to ram hi jaan bachaaye
beda paar lagaaye
ab to ram hi jaan bachaaye
beda paar lagaaye

jab tak ram ki sena aaye
gaate raho ye gaana
oommm ommmm
jab tak ram ki sena aaye
gaate raho ye gaana
band hai saare darwaaze
har rasta hai anjaana
arre mushkil hai iss rawan ki lanka se bach ke jaana
arre mushkil hai iss rawan ki lanka se bach ke jaana
vinti hai hanuman se
hanuman se
lanka mein aag lagaaye
ab to ram hi jaan bachaaye
beda paar lagaaye
jo hona tha ho gaya
jo hona hai ho jaaye
ab to ram hi jaan bachaaye
beda paar lagaaye
ab to ram hi jaan bachaaye
beda paar lagaaye
ab to ram hi jaan bachaaye
beda paar lagaaye

ASAD 10th Anniversary Celebrations – 9
———————————————————————

My last post on our blog has been sometime back. I have been meaning to write about this song which has a couple of rare occurrences in the Hindi Film and Music world and was waiting for an opportune moment.

Recently, I have been fighting my own battles on my health front, having been hospitalised for surgical and advanced interventional pain management procedures, more than a couple of times in the last one year. I have diabetes, which is under control, however it has caused neuropathy in both my feet causing severe pain with tingling and burning sensations. I would like to take this opportunity to create awareness amongst all the readers of this blog that diabetes can be very dangerous and draining and that one should take care of their feet. One’s feet bear the entire weight of one’s body but always fail to get the attention and good care, as with other parts of the body.

Well, coming back to today’s post. Late last month, we, the regular (and irregular) contributors of this blog were told by our beloved SudhirJi, that the blog was to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its creation and that song posts were expected from all the contributors. However, as hard as I tried, I couldn’t stick up to the deadline of sending in our contributions. However, Sudhir Ji would not relent and sent me another request to send in my post. This made me very embarrassed and I made a promise to myself that come what may, I will write my post and send it today, three days after my second extended deadline.

My association with this blog actually started around two years after I started my Facebook group – Rare Hindi Film Songs in 2010. In searching for old and rare songs to post, I would often visit the blog and later I came to know that even Atul Ji, the creator of this blog was a member and a regular visitor of my group. However, it took me almost 4 years to write my first post – for the song “Chup Chup Chup Kyon Baithe Ho” – and send it to Atul Ji for moderation and posting. Since then, I have been sending in my posts in bursts, start and stop.

Till date I have just posted about 20 odd songs, but I feel so much drawn to the Atulites group that I feel I have come to my home group amongst these various people across the world, who share similar passion and views. In particular, Avinash Ji and Sudhir Ji seem to like my kind of songs from movies of the 70s and early eighties, not that others are not encouraging.

My heartiest congratulations to Atul Ji, ASAD, Atulites and all the people who love HFM, on the 10th anniversary of this endeavour !!!

Now coming to today’s song. As I have mentioned above, this is a special song for me as it has a few rare characteristics associated with it, in the HFM world and also since it is quite a rare song. It is from the Pran, Navin Nischol and Rekha starrer ‘Dharma’ released in 1973. Two other songs from this movie have been posted earlier on the blog. For those who haven’t seen the movie or have forgotten it, the plot summary can be read here on IMDB.

Now, coming to this song with ‘Two Rare Occurrences’ for a Hindi movie!

It is an almost eight minute long song, starting with a straight cut and paste of the song “Aur Mera Naam Hai Jameela” sung by Lata Mangeshkar from the 1967 film ‘Night in London’ (composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal and penned by Anand Bakshi). In both the films, Helen is the dancer performing this song on screen. But of course, the choreography is different in the two films. In this clip from ‘Dharma’, only one stanza of the original song from ‘Night In London’ is included and it is about 2 minutes in duration. Well this is one rare thing.

The second and most important rare thing about this song is that after Helen’s initial lip syncing to this cut-paste song, the actual song, sung by Asha Bhosle, is lip synced by four of the best cabaret dancers of that era. Of course after the Numero Uno – Helen – who’s in the first part. The subsequent segments are performed by Faryal, Sonia Sahani, Jayashree T and Bindu.

The video opens with Helen beginning the dance with some male dancers. The music has already begun. We can also see Ramesh Deo with Asit Sen, who is watching the dance wide-eyed and lecherously. They go to another dance bar and Faryal starts her part followed by Sonia Sahni performing in the third bar. In the fourth bar, Jayashree T is performing bhangra. In the last bar, they do drugs with drinks while Bindu is performing. In this film, Madan Puri and Ramesh Deo are together shown to cheat rich men by taking them to clubs and tempting them with wine and women. The song shows Seth Garib Das (Asit Sen) is being trapped by them and this cabaret number is organized for him.

I hope all of you like the interesting facts of this song as well as the song. Please comment.

Song – Arey Saaqi Jo Kal Ki Hai Bachi Baaki (Dharma) (1973) Singer – Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Omi, Lyrics – Verma Malik, MD – Sonik-Omi

Lyrics

yaar ki nigaahon me
pyaar ki mehfil me
saahib main rahti hoon
aashiqon ke dil me
aur mera naam hai jameela

har ek dil ko dhadakne ki aadat huyi
main jis gali se bhi guzri qayamat huyi
log nazren bichaane lage
log nazren bichaane lage
haal dil ka sunaane lage
yaar ki nigaahon me
pyaar ki mehfil me
saahib main rahti hoon
aashiqon ke dil me
aur mera naam hai jameela

arey saaqi
jo kal ki hai
bachi baaki
usi ka daur chal jaaye
arey saaqi
jo kal ki hai
bachi baaki
usi ka daur chal jaaye
utha parda
dekh jalwa
ke sheeshe mein
jawani ab utar jaaye
arey saaqi

rani hoon main raat ki
tu hai galiyon ka raaja
aa
rani hoon main raat ki
tu hai galiyon ka raaja
soyi hui jawani ko
tu chhoo ke zara jaga ja
meri nigahein, aadayen ye baahein bulaayen
veeraa. . .
hahh veeraa. . .aah
la laa la laa la laa la laa

o ho
machal ke pee
sambhal ke pee
paimane mein maikhaana doob na jaaye
machal ke pee
sambhal ke pee
paimane mein maikhaana doob na jaaye
arey saaqi

dil le ja nishaani
badi meherbaani
haaye dil le jaa nishaani
badi meherbaani
teri jiyegi
teri jiyegi jug jug jawaani
o mere dil jaani
teri jiyegi jug jug jawaani
ho mere dil jaani
haaye
ve sun sajna
ve sun makhna
tu yaad rakhna
ke yaari toot na jaaye
ve sun sajna
ve sun makhna
tu yaad rakhna
ke yaari toot na jaaye
ve sun sajana..aa..aa. . .

dum mein dum hai to dum laga
duniya kya hai nasha hi nasha
aasmaan ke baadal to
kuchh bhi nahin
mazaa to tab hai ke
zameen pe baadal bana
mere humdum
raat hai kam
ke baaton mein
ye saari
raat na jaaye
mere humdum. . .

“Raaj darbaar” song used to be an important part of small budget B grade movies of early 1960s. These songs would typically be sung by two singers and one of them would be Kamal Barot. 🙂

Two or more female dancers would give a synchronised dance performance, watched by royals seated proudly on their thrones.

Movies may be B grade but the music was mostly A grade stuff, seeing that there was a good supply of A grade music directors badly in need of assignments. While some of these music directors continued to languish in these movies , some of them quickly graduated to A grade stuff. 1963 saw an interesting case when the music of Parasmani (1963) became a runaway hit and that catapulted Laxmikant Pyarelal , till then assistants to Kalyanji Anandji, to big league.

“Sunahri Naagin”(1963) was also a curious case. It came in the same year as “Parasmani”(1963) and it shared several artists with “Parasmani”(1963). For instance, Babubhai Mistri was the director in both the movies and Mahipal was the hero in both of them.

If Laxmikant Pyarelal were the music directors in “Parasmani”(1963) then “Sunahri Naagin”(1963) had music by their mentors viz Kalyanji Anandji.

“Sunahri Naagin”(1963) had eight songs in it. Four songs from the movie have been covered in the blog. All these songs were covered in 2010 ! There has been a lull for eight years since then.

Here is the fifth song from “Sunahri Naagin”(1963) to appear in the blog. This is a raj darbaar song which is picturised on several female dancers. I am unable to identify them and I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify them.

The song is sung by Kamal Barot (what did I say earlier 🙂 ) and Mubarak Begam. Ved Prakash is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

Song-Main to ho gayi re badnaam (Sunahri Naagin)(1963) Singers-Kamal Barot, Mubarak Begam, Lyrics-Ved Prakash, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

wafaaon ka aalam
mitne laga hai
mohabbat ka dam
phir ghutne laga hai

main to ho gayi re badnaam
lete lete tera naam
main to ho gayi re badnaam
lete lete tera naam
saanwariya
kisko doon ilzaam
saanwariya
kisko doon ilzaam
main to ho gayi re badnaam
lete lete tera naam
saanwariya
kisko doon ilzaam
saanwariya
kisko doon ilzaam

<ye dil to tera deewaana hai
chaahat se bhara paimaana hai
itna bhi mujhe maaloom nahin
itna bhi mujhe maaloom nahin
apna hai ya begaana hai
main to ho gayi re badnaam
lete lete tera naam
saanwariya
kisko doon ilzaam
saanwariya
kisko doon ilzaam

ek teer jigar ke paar hua
aur dard gale ka haar hua
kuchh haal ajab sa hai dil ka
kuchh haal ajab sa hai dil ka
jabse tera deedaar hua
main to ho gayi re badnaam
lete lete tera naam
saanwariya
kisko doon ilzaam
saanwariya
kisko doon ilzaam

bhoole se mohabbat kar baithe
ye kaisi qayaamat kar baithe
dil hamse baghaawat kar baitha
dil hamse baghaawat kar baitha
ham dil se baghaawat kar baithe
main to ho gayi re badnaam
lete lete tera naam
saanwariya
kisko doon ilzaam
saanwariya
kisko doon ilzaam

aaya mizaaje shareef mein
majnu sa aashiq mar gaya
lekin naseehat kar gaya
kya
karta main tauba ishq se
aaya mizaaje shareef mein aaya
aaya mizaaje shareef mein
majnu sa aashiq mar gaya
lekin naseehat kar gaya

bade naseeb se dil mein
wo aaj aaye hain aen
aji wo aaye hain aen
abhi to aaye hain aen
junoon e ishq mein ae
junoon e ishq mein
hum aaj ladkhadaaye hain
junoon e ishq mein
hum aaj ladkhadaaye hain
ye haal dekha ajab tera
ghabraa ke dil ne ye kaha
kya
karta main tauba ishq se
aaya mizaaje shareef mein aaya
aaya mijaaje shareef mein
majnu sa aashiq mar gaya
lekin naseehat kar gaya

hansi hansi mein aashiqui mein
jaan jaane de ae ae
ye jaan jaane de ae
ho jaan jaane de ae
haseen maut ko o o
haseen maut ko
hans kar gale lagaane de
haseen maut ko hans kar gale lagaane de
ye ishq ki hai ibtida
kya hogi iski intiha
karta main tauba ishq se
aaya mizaaje shareef mein aaya
aaya mizaaje shareef mein
majnu sa aashiq mar gaya
lekin naseehat kar gaya
kya
karta main tauba ishq se
aaya mizaaje shareef mein aaya
aaya mizaaje shareef mein
majnu sa aashiq mar gaya

khayaal kya hai tumhaara
ke main nashe mein hoon
aji hoon hosh mein
khuda kasam
maze mein hoon oon oon oon
sukoon dil ka
tamanna ki har khushi le le
ye wo nasha hai
jo jeete ji zindagi le le
ye ishq aag hai
is aag mein jal jaane de
ye pyaar dhokha hai
ye dhokha
hans ke khaane de
sambhaal khud ko zara
haan
ye dil sambhalta nahin
to phir na ishq se dar
ye dar nikalta nahin
aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa

ye poochh humse ae
ye poochh humse
lutf kya hai dil lagaane mein aen
bada maza hai kaleje pe chot khaane mein
aashiq khushi se mar gaye
buzdil naseehat kar gaye
karta main tauba ishq se
aaya mizaaje shareef mein aaya
aaya mizaaje shareef mein
aaya mizaaje shareef mein
aaya mizaaje shareef mein
