Blog 10-Year Challenge (2012-2022) – Song No. 16
————————————————————————————–

Ten years back in February’2012 the blog was posting songs at the rate of just above six songs per day. The final tally of the month of February’2012 was 178 songs. Regulars on the blog now-a-days or those associated with the blog in recent years would not believe this 😊 but, that is the fact.

Like on the eight day of the month, 9 february 2012 too saw as many as eight song-posts getting posted.

Following is the list of songs posted on 09.02.2012 in ascending order (i.e., the last song of the day appears at the bottom of this list below)

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Ho o o mujhe kisise pyaar ho gayaa Barsaat(1949) All songs covered

‘Chaalu Mera Naam’ (1977) was directed by Krishna Naidu for BC Deora Films, Bombay. This B grade movie had Vinod Mehra, Mahendra Sandhu, Vidhya Sinha, Helen, Madan Puri, Anwar Hussain, Deven Verma, Nazneen, Maruti, Jagdish Raj, Prakash Thapa, Radheshyam, Ramesh Deo, Chandrashekhar Vaidya, Sajjan, Sulochana Latkar, Anand Girdhar, Gurbachan Singh etc. in it.

The movie had four songs in it. One song has been covered so far.

Here is the second song from ‘Chaalu Mera Naam’ (1977) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar. Verma Malik is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

The song is picturised as a celebration song (birthday celebration?) where Helen and Vinod Mehra (in disguise ?) perform this song and dance. Villains are in attendance in full strength , as we can notice in the picturisation.

I request our knowledgeable readers to tell us what is going on in this picturisation.

The song itself is quite wonderful to listen to. It reminds me of music of ‘Don’ (1978), composed by the same music director duo. Sadly, this movie, which predates ‘Don’ by one year could not take advantage of such a fantastic sounding song.

It is a nice song that has been forgotten with time, mainly because the movie failed at the box office.

“Aansoo Ban Gaye Phool” (1969) was was produced by S M Sagar and Anoop Kumar and directed by Satyen Bose for Anoop Kumar Productions, Bombay. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Deb Mukherjee, Alka, Nirupa Roy, Raj Mehra, Anoop Kumar, Rakesh, Helen, Pran, Kumud Tripathi, Manik Dutt, Kumari Uma, Mughni Abbasi, Shekhar Purohit, Janki Das, Tarun Ghosh, Bazid Khan, Radhey Shyam, Gautam Mukherjee, Pardesi, Uma Dutt, Madhup Sharma, Prakash Misra, Behari, M.A. Latif, Vinod Sharma, Lalit Kapoor, Genius, Ramlal, Amrit Rana, Nadir, Deepak, Aziz Siddiqui,Habib etc in it.

The movie had five songs in it. Three songs have been covered soo far.

Here is the fourth song from “Aansoo Ban Gaye Phool” (1969) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Taj Bhopali is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song is picturised as a cabarat dance song on Helen. One can watch lots of other actors milling around the dance floor which also doubled up as Villain’s den in Hindi movies of those days.

One can see four guitarists also. I have a feeling that they may be related in some way or the others to the dancers of Hindi movies. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the various actors seen in the picturisation.

Today’s song is from a South Indian film, dubbed into Hindi – Piya Milan-1958.

The decade of the 50’s saw almost a spate of Hindi films from South. Some were dubbed, some were remakes and a few were first made in Hindi before they were remade into Tamil or Telugu etc.

Film Titles having the word ” Piya” were made in every decade since the advent of the Talkie films, till the end of the Century.

30’s – Piya Pyaare-1934, Piya ki Jogan-1936
40″s – Piya Milaqn-1945, Piya Ghar Aaja-1947
50″s – Piya (UR), Piya Milan-1958
60″s – Piya Milan ki Aas-1961
70’s – Piya Ka Ghar-1972
80’s – Piya Milan 1985
90’s – Piya ki Jogan-1997.

Except the 2 films of the 30’s and the un released film, I have seem most other films. I consider ‘ Piya Ka Ghar”-1972 as the best among the ‘Piya’ films. It was a remake of a Hit Marathi film – Mumbaicha Jawai-1970. It was directed by my favourite Basu Chaterjee. A genuinely talented actress Jaya Bhaduri was cast opposite a very handsome Non Actor Anil Dhavan in this film.

Film “Piya Milan” was originally a Tamil film MARMAVEERA-56, dubbed in Hindi by R R Productions. The film was originally made by Jubilee films, Madras. The star cast was Shri Ram, Vyjayantimala, Raja Sulochana, V.Nagaiah, T S Baliah, P S Veerappa, Tanghvelu, Chandra Babu etc.

The Hindi version was directed by Raghunath and the music was by Ramesh Naidu. Most songs were having the same tunes as given by the Tamil original’s composer S.Vedhu. The Hindi songs were written by Harsh(3) and Hasrat Jaipuri(6).

The greatest attraction of this film was the Guest appearance by N T Rama Rao, Sivaji Ganeshan and Gemini Ganeshan.

These are the heavyweight actors of the south. Since the 1950’s decade, every south artiste’s dream was to shine in Hindi film industry, because Hindi films meant All India fame and an honour. In this dream many actresses achieved success, but comparatively actors were almost nowhere. The only name perhaps could be taken was that of actor Ranjan and few more. However, Jamuna, Vaijayantimala, Hema malini, Ragini, Padmini, Rekha and many more actresses from South became famous in Hindi films. Likewise when the Tamil and Telugu industry became a big one, many actresses like Khushbu etc from the Hindi land became famous in South films. Somehow males could not achieve this.

One of the major problems for south Indian artistes is the Hindi language. The actresses like Vaijayantimala, Hema Malini and Rekha became experts, but Southern actors could not cross this hurdle. N.T.Ramarao ( 28-5-1923 to 18-1-1996) too tried hard. He featured in 23 Hindi films which were mostly dubbed films barring few. One film Brahmarshi Vishwamitra-1991 was even directed by him. Sivaji Ganeshan (1-10-1927 to 21-7-2001) a winner of the prestigious ” Dadasaheb Phalke Award” in 1996, also featured in 19 Hindi films. Gemini Ganesan-real name R.Ganesan ( 17-11-1920 to 22-3-2005) was actress Rekha’s father. He acted in 24 Hindi films.

Similarly many music directors also had the same desire to shine in Hindi films, but had the same problem of language. One of these MDs was P.Ramesh Naidu who gave music to the Hindi film Piya Milan-1958.

Pasupuleti Ramesh Naidu (Born 18-10-1933,Died 2-9-2005) was born in Kondapalli in Krishna District (Andhra Pradesh). He was so obsessed with music that he ran away and landed in Bombay when he was 14 year old. B R Chopra took him under his wings and Ramesh learnt Instrumentation and orchestration in HMV at Bombay.

He started his music career at the age of 17 years with a Marathi film ” Bhandawal Paahije “-1950, produced, Directed and acted by Kishore Sahu. After a few years he went back to Andhra and got married. He got a son also and then he came to Bombay, on his way to Calcutta. he spent 10 years there giving music to Bangla, Oriya and Nepali films.

He was invited to Madras and he gave music to Amma mata-72. He settled there with his family. He gave music in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada films. He came to Bombay from time to time to give music to Dubbed and Remade films from the South. He also gave music in a few Bhojpuri films. His Hindi films were Hamlet-54, Jay Simha-54, Piya Milan-58, Nartaki Chitra-65, Ganga Bhavani-79, Azaadi ki Oar-86,and Hum bhi kuch kam nahin-1983.

His first south film was Dampatyam-57 and last was Ish Gup chup-1993. He surpassed Salil Chaudhari by giving music in 10 Indian languages( Salil da gave music in 9 . Ramesh Naidu got the National Award for the film ‘Megh Sandesham’.

Naidu left this world on 2-9-2005, at Hyderabad.

PIYA MILAN-1958 was a story of Kings, Queens and the palace matters. The storyline was…

Maharaja Kulasekhara is the king of Kurni Empire. He has a beautiful daughter Vijaya (Vyjayanti mala), who is in love with a young rich boy, Mahinder (Shri Ram).

Maharaja Parakram Bahu of the neighbouring kingdom comes calling and before going back proposes to Vijaya. he is told that she is already engaged and this alliance is not possible.

Parakram goes back enraged. He consults his vazir, Nari and they decide to destroy Kulasekhara.

They tempt Srimantha, the commander of Kulshekar and then attack Kurni, capture the Maharaja and abduct Vijaya.

The kingdom is then given to Shrimantha. Shrimantha and his cronies torture the poor Janata and loot them.

Suddenly, a masked man called PARAMVEER appears from nowhere and protects the oppressed janata. He also punishes the cronies and Looters.

Meanwhile Parakram Bahu decided to marry Vijaya forcibly.

Getting this news, Paramveer attacks Parakram Bahu in the night ,captures him and rescues the princess Vijaya.

Then Param veer leads a mutiny and defeats Srimantha and rescues Maharaja Kulasekhara.

Finally, it is revealed that Param Veer is no one else but Mahinder ,the fiance of Vijaya.

All is well, after this.

Today’s song is sung by Usha Mangeshkar and Om Verma. I do not know anything about this singer and even after my attempts, I failed to get his information from any known source. But it does seem that this was his only song in a Hindi film. The video shows the song shot on Helen and an actor whom I could not recognise. May be he was from the south.

Hullo Atuldom

Today we are revisiting a movie that released in 1966 and was directed by J B H Wadia. The songs were all written by D.N. Madhok and C Ramchandra was the music director. It had 8 songs of which only 2 are on the blog. These are the ones posted:

Song Remarks
Duniya banaane waale ne post by Sudhirji marking 4200th post of the blog and has a lot of info about the actor Sajjan.
Tasveer bhi dekhi thhi this is also a post by Sudhirji.

Interesting notes are present in this second post about how C Ramchandra and D N Madhok have collaborated only twice (before this movie) and that too in the beginning of their careers.

Both these posts provide links to Memsaab’s blog and the synopsis/ review to the movie. BTW I forgot to mention that we are revisiting “Tasweer”.
As I sat to write this post my aim was to look for movies starring Zulfiqar Ali Shah Khan whose birthday falls on 25th September. He would have turned 82. I was paying particular attention to movies at the start of his career. I stumbled on a few movies where he had made uncredited appearances and the songs associated with them. I found that most of his initial songs are already present on the blog. I also found the song which was his absolute first appearance. I looked up for the song on the blog and also posted a comment pointing to the actor’s presence (that is the reason for my noticing that detail Nahmji).

I am sure the followers of the blog have figured out that I am talking of the very handsome, smart, fashionable, uber-cool icon of Bollywood. An actor, who in the later half of his career made super cool movies which were all phenomenal successes. His movies were peppered with great music, action and emotions. He had a special liking for the Cow-Boy getup. We are remembering Feroz Khan today. Sudhirji’s post of 2017 gives us a lot of insight on Feroz ‘stylish’ Khan and his career, I am sure I can’t better it.

Today’s song see him dance with Helen. We have Kalpana sitting, getting sad and shedding a tear and Sajjan (in a french beard) as part of the audience.

Rahul Dev Burman – Forgotten Songs – 5
———————————————————-

The fifth song of this series is a beauty from “Ehsaan”, a 1970 movie directed by Shiv Kumar for producer S J Rajdeo. The movie was written by R K Bannerjee, the songs were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by R D Burman.

The movie starred Joy Mukharjee, Anjana, Bobby, Rajender Nath, Aruna Irani, Azad, Helen, Johnny Whisky, K. N. Singh, Madan Puri, Rajan Kapoor, Renu, Shabana, Sheri, Sulochana Chattarjee, Sunder, Tun Tun, etc.

The story of this movie, as per the song uploader is that Shalini lives a wealthy lifestyle with her widowed dad, Mohan, and a younger brother, Bobby. Her dad has been entrusted by the Government of India to safeguard a list of the location of India’s secret agents worldwide.

Many gangsters are recruited to try and secure this list for large sums of money, but none succeed. Then one day while Shalini is returning home, she is accosted by hoodlums and abducted.

A young man, Raja, comes to her rescue, and escorts her home. She introduces him to her father, and soon both fall in love with each other. Raja becomes a frequent visitor to the Lal residence and is welcomed by everyone including young Bobby. Mohan approves of Raja, and after consulting his friend, Dinanath, arranges for Shalini to get married to Raja.

What Shalini, Mohan and Bobby do not know is that Raja is a burglar, a safe-cracker, who has been recruited by an underworld Don to gain the confidence of the Lal family, and steal the list of secret agents’ from Mohan’s house – by hook or by crook. Does he succeed?

Three songs out of a total of six have already been posted on this blog.

“Pyasaa Mera Dil Kitni Shaam Se” by Lata Mangeshkar, music by R D Burman, lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri from “Ehsaan” (1970). The song is a seduction song and is picturised on Joy Mukharjee and Helen (Lip Syncs).

Lyrics

Pyaasaa aa Mera Dil
Kitni ee Shaam Se
Aaja Re

Kab Se Sulag Rahi Hoon Main
Dekho Kahin Jaana Na Sanam

Aaja Jab Tak Ho Ujaala
Leke Tujhe Jhoomoon Sajnaa
Choome Tere Honto Ko Ye Pyaala
Pyaalon Ko Main Choomoon Sajnaa
Mukhada Ho Gulaabi
Aaj Tere Naam Se
Pyasaa Mera Dil
Kitni Shaam Se
Aaja Re Hum Donon Piyen
Ek Hi Jaam Se
Pyaasaa Mera Dil

Armaan Hai Tere Sang Behkoon
Gir Ke Uthhoo Main Tere Saath
Armaan Hai Tere Sang Behkoon
Gir Ke Uthhoon Main Tere Saath
Tere Gale Mein Ho Meri Baahein
Mere Dil Pe Ho Tera Hath
Tujhse Chaahat Mein
Mujhe Kitne Kaam Thhe
Pyaasaa Mera Dil
Kitni Shaam Se
ho Aaja Re Hum Dono Piyen
Ek Hi Jaam Se
Pyasaa Mera Dil
Kitni Shaam Se
Aaja Re Hum Donon Piyen
Ek Hi Jaam Se
Pyaasaa Hm Hm Hmm

kuchch paanv tharrtharaaye

gham kar mat kar mat yaaraa
pal do pal dhoom machha le
yoon mar mat mar mat yaaraa
kal kiss ne dekha

jiss ne bhi dil ko tokaa
khud ko diya hai dhokha
aa door gham se ho jaa
be-baaq hum se ho jaa
ye aish do ghadi ka

baahon mein mujhko bhar ley
har khauff se guzar ley

shaayad hum na hon
tu dar mat dar mat yaaraa
gham kar mat kar mat yaaraa
pal do pal dhoom machha ley
yoon mar mat mar mat yaaraa
