“Heeraa”(1973) was produced and directed by Sultan Ahmed for Sultan Ahmad Productions, Bombay. The movie had Sunil Dutt, Asha Parekh, Farida Jalal, Shatrughan Sinha, Helen, Kanhaiyyalal, Anwar Hussain, Nazir Hussain, Sulochana, Mukri, Randhir, Tabassum, Tuntun, Mumtaz Begam, B.B. Bhalla, Polsan, Renuka, Keshav Rana, Abhimanyu Sharma, Jankidas, Master Raju, Pahalwan, Habib, Mac Mohan, Maqbool, Bam Lahiri, Abhimanyu Sharma, Master Rajoo etc in it, with friedly appearances by Faryal, Asha Potdar, Shyam Kumar and Satyendra Kappu.

The movie had six songs in it. Four songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the fifth song from the movie to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Lata. Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

This song is a Bihar -Eastern UP kind of song where dancing girls were called to perform at important occasions such as weddings etc. In the picturisation, Asha Parekh is getting married and Helen is called upon to dance on the occasion.

Helen lip syncing in Lata’s voice (instead of Asha Bhonsle) and performing a mujra kind of dance (rather than cabarat). This was perhaps the idea of the moviemaker to cast Helen in a “different” kind of role. 🙂

Na Chaahoon Sona Chaandi” was the first time I took note of this roly-poly cute- faced actor. He played Braganza, a head-fisherman and father to ‘Bobby’ in 1973. Subsequently I saw him as mama to the character played by Hema Malini in ‘Aap Beeti’ in 1976, a pathan who helps Manoj Kumar in ‘Shor’ (1972), a sardar who was a good Samaritan in ‘Roti Kapda aur Makaan’ (1974).

Then one day on chitrahaar or it could have been chaayageet on Doordarshan I saw a black and white song “Patli Kamar Hai” where this particular actor was super good-looking which was enough to sweep the lady he was wooing, off her feet. He came across as a dancer with a reasonable sense of rhythm. That is when I was informed by my dad that Premnath was a lead actor in many movies and rattled of names like ‘Aab-e-Hayaat’ (1955), ‘Baadal’ (1951), ‘Aag’ (1948) etc. and also sang a few of his songs from movies where he was the hero. Recently, not so long ago, I too saw a black-n-white movie, where Premnath played a ‘supposed’ poor boy who falls in love with a princess and helps the king regain his kingdom, the movie was an Arabian nights kind of story. Think it was ‘Saaqi’ (1952).

So I have loved movies where Premnath was Sir Juda (‘Karz’), Yamraaj (‘Lok Parlok’), IG Khanna (‘Kalicharan’), Bajrang Bahadur (‘Aap Beeti’), Shankar Dada (‘Dharam Karam’), father of a bevy of beauties (‘Ishk Ishk Ishk’, and the most memorable of them all – Rai Saab Bhupendra Singh in ‘Johnny Mera Naam’.  Thinking of him today on his birth anniversary he would have been 93.

There is another celeb of yesteryears who has her birthday today. And I wrote a post for her last month itself where I wrote this “I remembered that November 21st was the birthday of our dear Helen. She turned 81 yesterday (21 October 2019).’’ God only knows what I was thinking as I wrote that post and sent it hurriedly to Atul ji for posting. And the good man that he is, he posted it within an hour of my sending it. But the error was pointed out in the comments section by Partha Chanda ji and Prakashchandra ji. The next day Nahm ji, after reading the comments, messaged me to inquire if I was planning one more post for the actual birthdate and also to see if the song choices were clashing. I assured her that the choices don’t clash as we have a vast library to choose from.  I must say that we had an extra song and extra good wishes for our much-loved Helen.

As my practice has been over the years, I have managed to find a song which features both the birthday celebs. It is from the 1979 release ‘Magroor’’ which starred Shatrughan Sinha, Vidya Sinha, Premnath, Helen, Deven Verma, Nadira, Narendranath, Paintal, Dr. Shreeram Lagoo, Jagdish Raj etc. The film had music by Laxmikant Pyarelal and Anand Bakshi wrote the lyrics. Playback singers were Asha Bhonsle, Suman Kalyanpur, Anuradha Paudwal, Mohd. Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey and Mahendra Kapoor. All the 5 songs were duets.

Todays’ song is a club song where we see Helen (Rukhsaana) being wooed by a bunch of suitors (extras) and Premnath joining in on the fun. He is bodily lifted out of the dance floor by the cops at the end of the song. Playback for this song is by Asha and Mannada.

My stint as a post writer for the blog started with this song from the film “Gumnaam”. This was a Helen song, and I chose it as the song for my first post in the blog for no particular reason. Maybe it was not yet posted in the blog was the only trigger, apart from my husband suggesting it.

Another remarkable thing about my first posts was that, it got posted within a few hours of sending the mail. There were very few outside contributors who were writing posts back than in 2012, could have been one of the factors in being given such priority treatment 🙂 . Guest posters were few and lyrics contributors were many. I was one of the early song lyric contributors. Those were very heady days of finding known, much loved songs not yet posted in the blog. I remember with fondness, sending lyrics of some of my all-time favourite songs like “ ab to hai tum se har khushi apni” from “Abhimaan” and the hauntingly beautiful rendition of ‘hai tere saathh meri wafaa” from “Hindustan ki Qasam”.

Now I am a veteran of 302 lyrics and 243 posts, at last count. Lyrics contribution has stopped for obvious reason that, if I can write posts also that why would somebody else want to write them for the songs which I want posted in the blog. Sometimes I think, I should go back to sending lyrics contributions, also for no particular reason. You see random thought in the mind don’t necessarily have to be for a reason or logic.

Similar way my posts are written straight from the heart and not with too much deliberations. Though at times they may seem so, if I quote some poems and my own ‘essay’s. There have been a few posts by me which had on length discussions (my own seesaw of thoughts – if they can be called discussions) not related in anyway to the songs accompanying the posts. Some of the posts were direct from the heart and reflected my feelings, impressions etc. No matter what I have enjoyed my experience here, much misunderstood and all. I feel that language can only be source of communication, which is one dimensional only.

Going back to my first post – A Helen song. Helen Anne Richardson Khan (born Helen Anne Richardson on 21 November 1938), best known as Helen. She is turning 81 on 21st November, 2019, and this is posts to celebrate her persona and her contribution in her chosen field. Having stated this there is not much about ‘Helen’ I will be writing.

In the post (My first post) I had this to say about the film ‘Khaamoshi”(1996):

‘Not that have anything against Jatin-Lalit, in fact their score for ‘Khaamoshi – The Musical ” is one of my few favourites in this two decades. The other day, I looked up the songs of this film, solely for the Helen song “Gaate thhe pehle akele aaj gaata hai saara jahaan”, trying to find a better alternative to this song from “Gumnaam” which I am supposed to discuss. Yeh dil sun rahaa hai, mausam ki sargam ko sun, jaana suno ham tum pe marte hain, hayya haaya ho let it let let it go, and aaj main uper aasman neeche are all competing for the best song of the film(Khaamoshi-The Musical).’

Having said this much about the film in the post, I have so far managed to post only one song. So I have chosen a “Helen” song with a difference from this film as this birthday post.

In this song, Helen playing the matriarch of a Goan family, ‘Mariamma’ in the film is trying to make the best of the situation where ‘A Piano’ being family heirloom is sold to the local antique collector, Raghuvir Yadav. The Piano is maybe last thing remaining which belonged Mariamma’s husband and her link with him. As the Piano is taken away, there is procession of villagers singing and dancing, Mariamma is a part of it with her grandchildren. The Piano is finally taken away abroad a ferry, and she cannot follow it anymore. She has tried her best to mollify the children that all is not lost and those things which are lost, eventually comeback. As the song ends, Mariamma is also seen going beyond the horizon. That’s the end of the ‘Mariamma too in the film.

The singers are Kavita Krishnamoorthy, Shradha and Khusnum. The later two are new names for the blog, who sing for the kids. There is a lot of chorus and unique composition in its own way. Jatil-Lalit are the composers and Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist of this beautiful song. Helen as the Anglo-Indian elderly widow in the black and white dress, made a charming grandmother in the film. With her demise, Annie’s(Manisha Koirala) child hood is also over. The film, if the readers have not seen it, is to be recommended for any student of cinema. The reasons of this recommendation are many, and songs also is one of the reasons.

Hullo to Atuldom

Its been a few weeks since I wrote a post. I have missed the birthdates of a few of my favourites. I won’t put the blame of these misses on the festival season as then we will have to excuse Atulji his numerous blank dates on the blog which we don’t do; we expect at least one post per day from him.

I get notifications on my mailbox from one of the many music compilation sites which I had stumbled upon a few years ago. I don’t open mail notifications that often specially from this site but today I did. It had songs which I had not heard in years. Today’s list began with the song “my name is Suzy” from “An Evening in Paris” and then played a few numbers in various genres.

One of the songs made me sit up. I had never heard this song which was in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. I quickly googled for it and found that it was a song penned by Amit Khanna and Bappi Lahiri was the composer. And no, it was not a disco song or nor was it what we generally expect from the Bappi Lahiri baton. I heard it twice and then went looking for its video. I had another shock. It was picturised on Helen and no it was not a typical Helen-style item or cabaret. The expressions she gave in that song reminded me of another Helen- Bappi Lahiri song.

All this put me on a search mode for the details of the song which I heard today. One thing it did was remind me of the song from “Paanch Qaidi”- “Jeena to hai par ae dil kahaan”. But here are the details of the song- it is from a movie called “Josh” which was released in 1981. It starred Vidya Sinha, Helen, Sarika, Sheetal, Amjad Khan, Anil Dhawan, Raj Kiran, Deven Verma, Shakti Kapoor etc. The movie was directed by Raj Sippy. It was his second film after “Inkaar”. The common factor in the two movies being Amjad Khan, Vidya Sinha, Helen and Gurbachan. From what I read about the movie on IMDB.com Amjad Khan played a central character and Vidya Sinha had a role which was different from what she was known to play. If the movie had been successful, we would have had all the main actors in “Hatke” roles but that was not to be.

After hearing the song, I remembered that November 21st was the birthday of our dear Helen. She turned 81 yesterday (21 october 2019). Here is wishing her a healthy life with all her friends and dear ones around her. Here is the song which I liked hope all the followers of the blog like it too.

“Zindagi”(1964) was written produced and directed by Ramanand Sagar for Gemini Productions, Madras. This movie had Raj Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, Vyjayanthimala, Helen, Mehmood, Prithviraj Chauhan, Jeevan, Dhumal, Jayant, Kanhaiyalal, Hiralal, Master Shahid, Leela Chitnis, Pushpavalli(Actress Rekha`s mother), Baby Farida & “Honey”, Mumtaz Begum, Moolchand, Nirupa Roy, Satyajeet etc in it.

The movie had 13 songs in it. Seven songs from the movie have been covered in the past.

Today (30 august 2019) is the 96th birth anniversary of Shailendra (30 august 1923 -14 december 1966). Shailendra would have been 96 today. I know of at least one person senior to Shailendra in age who is still around. Sadly Shailendra left us at a tender age of 43.

In such a brief duration of 43 years, he had a 17 years long career as a lyricist in HFGK. His literary output during this period was enough to establish himself as an all time great lyricist in the annals of HFM.

Shailendra penned around 760 songs in HFM. This blog has as many as 676 of his songs. So only around 80 odd Shalendra songs are left to be covered in the blog.

On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Shailendra, here is a song from “Zindagi”(1964). This song is sung by Lata and chorus. Shailendra is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

In old days, we had days of specialists. Hero, Heoine would sing songs, play lovey dovey, etc.

Villain’s would made the life of hero and heoine miserable. They would have mujra and or cabarat dancers as part of villain’s set up.
Singing quawwali in disguise would be the response of the lead actors.

Then there was comic side plot. And then character artists, such as parents of the lead actors, siblings of the lead actors etc.

From 1970s onwards, days of multitasking began and specialists found themselves threatened. Here the hero himself would do comedy as well as villainy. The heroine would perform cabarat/ mujra herself.

Fortunately, one did not witness multi tasking till 1960s and specialists ruled the roost those days.

As far as comedy was concerned, Johny Walker was the go to man, and he was followed by Mehmood.

When I try to analyse Johny Walker’s comedy, I find that his comedy often involved being in the wrong books of ladies. Sometimes he would find himself on the wrong side of dogs as well. 🙂

Johny Walker had acted in not one but two movies called “Baazi”, viz “Baazi” (1951) and “Baazi”(1968). “Baazi”(1951) was his debut movie, whereas “Baazi”(1968) came towards the fag end of his career.

“Baazi”(1968), lesser known that the 1951 namesake, was directed by Moni Bhattacharya for Golden Films Production, Bombay. The movie had Dharmendra, Waheeda Rehman, Johnny Walker, Mehmood, Helen, Ansari, Nazir Hussain, Ullhas, Chans Usmani, Amar, Manmohan, Keshto Mukherjee, Pinchoo Kapoor etc in it.

The movie had five songs in it. Two songs have been covered in the past.

Today (29 july 2019) is the 16th remembrance day of Johny Walker (11 November 1926 – 29 July 2003). As a tribute to him, here is a song from “Baazi”(1968). IT is a Johny Walker type comedy song, viz a song where he is in trouble at the hands of the fair sex. It turns out that he sees not one but two ladies simultanously and he finally gets caught by both.

So here is this song from “Baazi”(1968). it is sung by Manna Dey. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

The song shows Johny Walker being taken to task by Helen and Shammi. Singing while being chased by two ladies, that is Johny Walker for us. 🙂

Throughout the year, this blog notes anniversaries of various artistes. We celebrate their birth anniversaries, we remember, and observe with respect, their death anniversaries.

We occasionally also celebrate birthdays of Atulites here.

But there is one date that we all celebrate every year with a lot of love.

And that is this blog’s own birthday.

Yes, today, the 19th of July is the birthday of this blog.

This is the date, 11 years ago, that Atul, who started this blog, posted its very first song “mile na phool to kaanton se dosti kar li”. A beautiful song, written by Kaifi Azmi saab, composed by Roshan, and rendered in Rafisaab’s voice.

What an auspicious start to the blog!

Since then, now a veteran of over 15000 songs, this blog continues to go strong, adding more treasures to its already abundant treasure-chest, and attracting visitors from around the globe.

At last count, the number of hits on the blog was close to 12 million!

Clearly, this blog has established itself as the go-to source for HFM lovers, especially those interested in accurate song lyrics, and with a desire to engage themselves also with a write-up associated with the song.

Over these years, starting as a one-song-a-day blog, it has evolved into multiple-songs-a-day, with a whole lot of features added to it over this period of time.

During the course of this journey, another very important development (at least for some of us here), is the formation of this group called Atulites.

It is nothing fancy as such. Atul started this journey 11 years ago, and there have been many who have visited the blog and enjoyed its content. But a few of us, have been regulars here over the years, either writing comments, or posts. We have developed a bond over the years, thanks to the blog. Many of us have had an opportunity to meet each other in person. Since it all started with Atul, we call ourselves Atulites. 🙂

As someone who has known this blog from day one, it is a great joy for me to see this blog now complete 11 years.

I’ve said this many times – but I will say it again – this blog is unlike any other blog out there. Most blogs don’t last beyond a few months or years. And even then, the posting on these blogs is sporadic. Maybe a post every few weeks, or even months.

This is mainly because it takes a lot of effort and time to post regular content on a blog. Yes, if it’s earning significant money for the author, or promotes him or her in any way, that might be motivation to keep posting. But otherwise, it loses steam, and ends up neglected.

Here, Atul has ensured that this blog has posts almost every single day since it was started. Sure, there have been the odd days without posts, but these have been very few over this 11-year period. This is truly remarkable – and is a testament to Atul’s dedication and discipline.

We must remember, and stress here, that this blog is a “labour of love” for Atul. Had it been a commercial venture, one can understand so much time and effort spent on it. But for Atul, it has just been his passion and love that has kept the blog going for all this while, with daily updates.

I must add here that, in the last few years, Atul has been helped in this process by the one and only Sudhir ji. Together they form a great team, ensuring the blog is always buzzing.
I can’t thank both of them enough for what they do for the blog.

Then there are the other contributors also who enrich the blog greatly by their contributions. Arunji is the first name that comes to mind, but there is a whole host of others – they know who they are. 🙂 Everyone has contributed in his, or her, own way to the blog.

All in all, it has been a wonderful 11-year journey. I am very glad to have been part of it, to have learnt so many songs I’d never heard before, and to have met so many wonderful people, thanks solely to this blog.

So a big thank you to Atul for this.

Even as I type this, it has just struck me that the IPL also started in 2008. The final was played on 1st June 2008 – and this blog started on 19th July 2008. I wonder whether there is a connection. Did the IPL inspire Atul to start this blog? 🙂

Now, quickly avoiding the brickbats coming my way for posing that last question, am moving on to the song for today.

I wanted a fun, lively, song because it is a happy occasion.

And, as usual, I went looking for a song from the era I am most comfortable with, while hunting for songs. That is, the 1970s. Often I come across a song that might not have been all that famous, but is special to me because I remember it from that time, and it brings back memories.

Today’s song is one such. It is from the film Dharkan (1972).

Now this film is one I distinctly remember seeing in my childhood. I remember liking it a lot too at that time. It had a different type of storyline.

From what I remember, the story was about a man travelling with his friend by train, to meet another long-lost friend (who happens to be very rich). This friend in the train gets greedy and kills this man. He then poses as him, and meets the long-lost friend, hoping to swindle him of his wealth. Of course, he needs to be careful not to get exposed.

I don’t remember the details now, but after some initial success, he begins to arouse suspicions about his identity.

The picturisation of this song reflects one such situation. As we can see, Helen and Sanjay Khan are taunting Roopesh Kumar, hinting to him that they know what he has done.

I need to see this film again – though it’s quite possible I might not like it now. 🙂 It happens sometimes that you see a film that you’d last seen decades ago – and it doesn’t have the same appeal anymore.

The moment I heard this song though, I immediately remembered the movie. It is classic Asha Bhosle, though the composer is not RD Burman, but Ravi. I remember this song very well from that time, though I’m not sure if it was popular then. The most popular song of this film was “main to chala, jidhar chale rasta” (which has already been posted here). This is the second song of the film to be posted here.

Missing Films of 1960s – 112

Cricket is a distraction par excellence. 🙂  I am sure most of us bandwagoneers will agree.

That we are approaching the 151st century of songs on the blog, was being exchanged between Atul ji and myself for quite some days now. But the fact that we are also approaching the completion of the 4th millennium of no. of days of existence, almost went completely un-noticed by either of us. It was like just three or four days ago, that the tubelight came on in my mind. I immediately wrote to Atul ji. And equally immediately we agreed that we are on a threshold milestone that is more significant than the 151st century of songs.

Pondering on how to impress the importance of this event, we went back and forth with a couple of ideas. Of course, the idea that we should combine the 4th mega-day with the 151st C, was the immediate conclusion. And the century song was then scheduled for 1st July, and we decided to pace out the required interim posts so that we accomplish this combination.

Now we had already identified the century song, and Atul ji was already in preparation with the environment friendly post. The song – I had already suggested to Atul ji, and we had agreed to bring on “Main Mar Gai Garmi Se” as the crucial link in this scheme to bring home the message of global warming and connect it to the environment friendliness objective. But then Atul ji came up with a counter thought. The song itself is a June song, and we will be overstepping into July if we post it on the 4,000th day. Now what to do? After a brief exchange, we agreed that we will post this song on 30th June, on the 3,999th day and then figure out another special for 1st July. The decision then also put us in a scramble, because then we had four more posts to make this June song hit the date of 30th June. So then both of us weighed in, in favor of making these four posts (plus the century post, making it five) happen on Sunday, split as three posts by me and two by Atul ji.

I prepared the current latest post by Arun ji, and scheduled it for early morning release on Sunday. And then I worked the afternoon and evening to make two more posts, adding into two of my ongoing series – one for the repeat songs and one for the sleepless nights.

And then, of course we know what transpired on Sunday. India lost by 30 runs against England – personally I believe it could have been done, but then that is me, commenting, watching from thousands of miles away. In short, cricket otherwise consumed the attention and our combined target of 5 posts slipped by 2.

So in the morning, I get an email from Atul ji. Quite matter of fact indeed, that he was not able to make any posts yesterday, and that although it is July now, but the garmi still justifies the song, and that we are happy we combine 4M + 151C today. So the following is what I wrote back to him reassuringly –

Yes, in our part of the country, where monsoons have not yet arrived, the heat is sweltering and quite intense. The song is still very appropriate.

And btw, it is still June in the US. It will be June in Midway Islands, Samoa till 4.30 pm (IST) today. And overall, the month of June 2019 will remain on this planet till 5.30 (IST) pm, when finally midnight crosses over the International Date Line. :D) :D)

Atul ji agreed. If you notice the time of posting of the 151C song – it is 4.50 PM (IST). We made it well within the transmogrified target, with 40 minutes to spare. Meaning that the month of June was still alive on this planet when 151C got posted. The final edge of the midnight crossed over the International Date Line in the Pacific Ocean 40 minutes after the posting, finally closing the month of June 2019 from everywhere on earth. Talk about close shaves. 😀 😀

But another notable mention still needs to be made.  In this exchange, Atul ji also expressed that he was not feeling very good about the amount of significance that he wants to bring in to this milestone of 4M days. He said it is not feeling weighty enough. So then I suggested that let us follow this 151C post with another post that brings is one more very significant song, and celebration, to add to the 4M festivities. And that I have the very thing planned for the 151C+1 post in any case, to be brought on to blog on 2nd July. So let me explain. Maybe some of you may have noticed. Whenever we reach a century post milestone, that milestone stays on for that entire day. Meaning we don’t follow up with any other post that day, to ensure that the century celebration stays on for at least one full day. When I explained the content I had planned for this 151C+1 post, he readily agreed to make an exception to this convention of keeping the day free after publishing a century post.

So excuse me for the long drawn intro – I believe the prelude circumstances were quite interesting enough to merit this story being told. 🙂 🙂

So what is special about this post – the 112th in the series of ‘Missing Films of 1960s?

Two reasons. Firstly, based on all the research and explorations that I have been able to make regarding the missing films list of 1960s that Ben Katie prepared as my homework, and based on all the material that I have been able to trace and ferret out, today’s post is the grand finale, of this series. Meaning that, given everything that I have been able to lay my hands on, this is truly the last film that can be presented in this series. So we have a marathon series of 112 episodes, lasting for 3 years, 9 months and 2 days, coming to a close today.

And secondly, the rarity of the song that is being presented today. The quality of rarity of this song in my opinion, actually goes beyond the rarest of the rare. Today’s song, for whatever it is worth, comes into play, where everyone related to Hindi film music has been resigned to the fact that this film, ‘Hawa Mahal’ of 1962 – it does not have any, and I mean ANY, surviving songs available. In a situation where the absence of songs is an established and accepted fact, when one is able to trace out something, even a partial song, that is indeed a matter of a resounding celebration. A little later in this post, I will explain the how this came about.

Let us quickly get over with the numbers first. Ben Katie started work on compiling the list of missing films from 1960s (1961-1970) by comparing the listing in GK Vol 4 and the list of songs posted on our blog. That was in November of 2014. She sent out the first draft listing to myself, Arun ji and the rest of the team for a quick review and update cycle. The review and update part did happen, but the ‘quick’ part did not. 🙂 Anyways, after setting up, reviewing and inserting special remarks for some films as required, we came up with the following numbers,

So 247 was the count to be tackled, when I started working on this series. The first episode was aired on 30th Sep, 2015, and the movie presented in that first episode is ‘Muraad’ of 1961. Initially, I tried to stick to the sequence in which these films appear in the Geet Kosh. But not strictly all the way through – quite a few times I would break the sequence, based on availability issues or demands of some special event such as anniversaries etc.

As is apparent from the episode number, I have been able to bring onboard 112 films (including today’s ‘Hawa Mahal’). The following table gives the details of this analysis, by year within this decade.

The first three columns (after the year column) give the status as of the compilation and analysis done by Ben Katie, at the beginning of this exercise, i.e. November of 2014. The next two columns give the data on postings for the particular year, after this exercise is set in motion. Interesting to note that at total of 56 songs of this decade got posted on the blog, outside of this series, during the same period. The last column gives the no. of films which are not yet available, and I mean, not available from any source, period. As far as my search of the past almost four years reveals, songs of these films are not available anywhere in public domain. I could be wrong, and oh boy, I will be the happiest person to be told that I am wrong 🙂 .

So having dealt with the numbers and having told the story of pending films, let me now come to the song being presented today.  The film ‘Hawa Mahal’ of 1962 is produced by Ramesh Vyas, under the banner of Navkala Niketan, Bombay and is directed by BJ Patel. The main cast of actors is listed as Ranjan, Helen, Tiwari, Baboo Raje, Ramavtar, Bela Bose, Jugnu, Shyam, and Prakash amongst others.

There are six songs listed in the Geet Kosh. The name of lyricist is not given. Also, the names of the singers are not listed. Music direction is by Avinash Vyas. The singing voices used in this film are of Asha Bhosle and Mahendra Kapoor, however assignment to individual songs is not indicated.

Now coming to the mystery of songs of this film. In my search for the songs of this film, I could establish one thing. No gramophone records of the songs of this film are available anywhere. The general response from the premier collectors is that no 78 rpm records of this film were created. I was quite disappointed. With names like Helen and Bela Bose in the cast of actors, the film being of the ‘jaadugar saiyyaan’ types abracadabra of magic and fantasy, the music of Avinash Vyas, the singing voices identified – I was eagerly expecting some wonderful songs to be harvested from a film like this. But my search kept turning up a naught wherever I would be inquiring.

Then maybe three or so years ago, I espied a VCD release of this film with a VCD/DVD dealer in Chandni Chowk in Delhi. I just pounced at it, and bought it. Getting home, with an anxious expectation, I put on my laptop to play. I could not believe my eyes. The film runs its complete length, and NOT A SINGLE SONG is existing in the film. I was devastated. I ran the film again – maybe I had dozed off when the songs were playing. But no, even the second more careful screening did not turn up any songs. I ran the disc a third time, and carefully looked at sequence of scenes. And sure enough, I was able to detect three or four places, where the narrative jumps, and the scene makes up as if there would have been a song here. The realization struck me – all the songs had been edited out of the film. I was furious, cursing the VCD manufacturer’s apathy towards lovers of music, trying to cut down run time of the film to fit on the disk, वगैरह, वगैरह.

I tried once again – bought another disc, but still no songs. Now I was obsessed in trying to get to the source material of this film – the VHS tapes. In my search for the same, in India, as well as outside India, I was successful in procuring three different copies of the VHS tapes of this film from different sources. Imagine my horror, when I found that even the VHS tapes were bereft of any songs.

I was confused, angry and anxious. I started talking to my collector friends, asking them if they had any information on why such a fate had befallen this film. No one had any clue. The Geet Kosh does not carry any additional footnotes, remarks or corrigenda about this film. I was in total despair. Six songs listed, the film is available, and not one song is traceable.

The Geet Kosh lists only three actors – Ranjan, Helen and Tiwari. Just came to my mind, and I carefully viewed the credits at the beginning to get more complete information. One thing struck me as very peculiar. The name of the MD is given, names of two playback singers are given. But there is no name listed for the songwriter. I carefully checked it twice – sure enough the name of the lyricist is not in the credits. My mind then surmised this possibility that before the release of this film, some trouble must have brewed between the producer and the songwriter. No settlement could be reached through mediation, and the songwriter probably took the legal recourse, and got an order from the courts to disallow use of the songs written by him, in the film. The producer must have been forced to give up the rights to the songs. The same got deleted from the film, and as well, no gramophone records were manufactured. And the producer then also deleted the reference to the songwriter’s name in the credits. All well for them, but the music lovers have lost an unheard treasure.

Some month ago, for no reason, I picked up this disc, and started viewing it, simply as timepass, and to get the hang of the storyline. There is an evil magician living at the bottom of the ocean. He has fairies and mermaids as his attendants. He is collecting human skulls – when he will get to 100, he will achieve power to conquer the three worlds. Helen is one of the fairies that lures unsuspecting ‘aadam jaat’ male humans with her charm, and once entrapped, they are tied up and taken to the bottom of the ocean. One day, she lays a trap, and who would walk in but the hero of the film – Ranjan. She promptly falls in love with him, and sets him free, does not take him to her magician master. The news spreads in the underwater world, and the magician imprisons her. Her human beloved gets to know the story, and with his friends, goes down to free Helen. There is standard stuff of fights, fist fights and sword fights which seem to go on and on and on. There is a spaceship which is shaped like a palace – ‘Hawa Mahal’ for you. Ranjan defeats the magician and escapes from the underwater world in this spaceship, with Helen, and his friends. A happy ending for all. Lot of magic stuff happens throughout the film.

This time around, I watched this film in its entirety, right up to ‘THE END’. And that is where the magic happened. I discovered a partial song, right at the end of the film. It seems when the editor spliced out the songs from the main body of the film, he simply forgot that one partial song has been used in the closing minutes of the film. The discovery flabbergasted me – at least now we have one sampler from this film.

The singing voice is Mahendra Kapoor. The clip is a segment of the song, just over a minute in length. But goodness what a wonderful melody this turns out to be. One can only imagine what may have been the quality of songs if this is a representative sample. Wonderful, simply wonderful.

So then I upload this one minute clip, containing one complete stanza, and make for this post. This discovery is no less than any other rarest of rare songs. The world of collectors had given up on this film and its songs. But then we now have one half song, discovered quite by accident, giving a flavor of what could have been.

And with this startling discovery, I suspend further publications in this series. I say suspend, because I want to leave the door open for the possibility that any of the remaining 79 films of this decade, may turn up, only God knows where and when.

The wait will never end.

4000 Post No. : 15100

Today (1 july 2019) happens to be the first day of the month (pehli taareekh). People today arev no longer as happy and bullish about pehli taareekh as they were till a few decades back, nevertheless it remains an important day for people.

This time, it happens to be monday, the first working day as well. 😉 It is as if one is beginning a new month with a clean slate, with the first working day of the week. 🙂 There are people who dread mondays. I am sure regulars of this blog are not among such people. 🙂

This day happens to be quite an important day for the blog as well. Today is the 4000th day for this blog ! 4000 days of continous vibrant existence, with posts almost every day !

Out of 4000 days, there have been 217 dot days (5.4 % days) when no posts were published, otherwise there have been posts everyday on 3783 days (94.6 %) out of these 4000 days !

The peak daily strike rate of this blog was 4.626 posts a day on 1902th day of the blog on 2 october 2013 when 8800th post was posted. Those were the days when covering six songs in a day was considered normal in the blog. The strike rate began to fall from 2015 onwards and today on the 4000th day of the blog we are on 15100 only !

Did I say post number 15100 ? Yes, I did. Today on the 4000th day of the blog, we reach another century post, namely post number 15100 in the blog.

Many of our writeup contents, like our strike rate of posts have dried up as well, nevertheless we still summon enough creative juices for special occasions. Blog century post is one such special occasion.

This writeup is a labour of love (a favourite phrase for this blog) and it covers a topic that I wanted to cover on 5 june 2015, which was world environment day. Though I had considerable data on this topic, I was not able to convert all that data into useful and interesting information in the limited time that I could summon by that date. So I decided that this topic would be covered while discussing post number 15100. I discussed the matter with Sudhir Jee and requested him to find a suitable song. Finally we zeroed in on a song that is quite appropriate and suitable for the occasion as well as the topic being discussed in the song.

The topic of this writeup is environment. This writeup covers a man who has singlehandedly performed a Herculean task ( भगीरथ प्रयास) in the area of environment.

Who is this man and what he has done ?

Jitu Kalita, a Jorhat-based journalist who writes a popular column on nature in Prantik, an Assamese magazine, was stalking vultures when he found himself on the far side of Aruna sapori (sapori is the Assamese word for island), entering a forest, when a visibly perturbed tribal man practically attacked him and chased him off the land.

Later, Jitu Kalita managed to pacify the man and he convinced him that he was a journalist and not a poacher as apprehended by the tribal man. It was then that the tribal man, named Jadav Payeng, gradually opened up to Jitu Kalita and Jitu Kalita had the biggest news scoop of his career.

He is a man called Jadav “Molai” Payeng, a native of Assam. A man in his late 50s, he is an ordinary man who lives in a village near Jorhat (Assam). A tribal man of Mising tribe of Assam, he makes his living by milking his cattles and selling their milk.

When he was young, he lived with his parents and family is an island on River Brahamputra, near a small town called Kokilamukh located on south bank of the river.

In 1965, there was a big flood and that devastated the island (called Kartic sapori or Aruna sapori). Jadav Payeng’s family decided to move to another island to the north, namely Majuli island (which incidentally is the biggest river island in the world).

Before relocating, acute poverty compelled his parents to leave five-year-old Jadav in the care of Anil Borthakur, a court-master at the District Judge Court in Jorhat, who looked after his schooling.

In 1979, after he had appeared for his matriculation examination in a Jorhat School, Jadav Payeng visited his native place during summer season. What he saw there devastated him. He saw hundreds of dead snakes or the dry and hot sands. These snakes, which were washed ashore that island during rainy season, had died in summer because there was no vegetation growing in the sands that could protect and nurture these snakes. Jadav Payeng was heart broken. If snakes could die like this, then in future humans can likewise die if there is no vegetation to protect and nurture them- he thought. And he resolved to do something about that.

He approached forest department (where he had worked as a labourer in their project of afforestation), but they refused to help him and stated that it was not possible to do what he wanted.

Jadav Payeng asked the elders who lived in that area about some suitable vegetations that could be grown there. They advised him to grow world’s tallest grass. Initially confused, he later came to know that they described bamboo as world’s tallest grass. They also provided him some seeds.

Jadav Payeng began to plant seeds regularly from that day in 1979. Initially it was bamboo, and later, when Bamboo trees formed a decent enough self sustaining vegetation, he began to plant other variety of seeds as well.

Jada Payeng kept on and on for more than three decades unsung, unknown, unheralded. He obviously had genuine passion for the task that he could go on and on singlehandedly for this long without any support.

It was only thanks to the chance discovery by nature photographer Jitu Kalita that people came to know about this forest which was grown singlehandedly by one man.

This forest became so large and so thick that wild animals like Elephants (from Dibrugarh), Rhinos (from Kaziranga) and tigers (from Karbi anglong) found their way into his forest.

This jungle was named Mulai kathoni (Mulai jungle) by the local people, where Mulai was his nickname.

Jadav Payeng had built his tribal style home (known as Changghar – house on stilts in the Mising style) in the jungle where he lived with his family (wife and three kids). When the herd of elephants first arrived in the jingle in 2008, they overran his home.

He stood and watched from a distance and realised the magnitude of what he had done. While the others watched on, baffled, he was overcome with joy. And he had every reason to be – he has succeeded in bringing life (that too wildlife) back to the island.

But his celebrations were short-lived. A few days later, angry villagers, having assessed the damage to their crops, blamed Mulai Kathoni for attracting the elephants. One mob manifested their anger by cutting down trees while another set fire to a patch at the far end. He reckons he lost one tenth of the forest in that first wave of mindless violence.

Fortunately, things calmed down since. The forest department too realised that wild elephants had gone to this “new” jungle that they knew nothing about till then. The ex-gratia payment for damaged crops offered by the Forest Department, the media attention and accolades bestowed on Payeng helped in suppressing the rage of the villagers.

What was empty sandbar had transformed into a full fledged jungle spread over 1360 acres (550 hectares). The forest now had around 5000 trees of over 100 different species, all singlehandedly planted by him. The vegetation included shimloo, shishoo, bhelo, gamari, segun, jamun, aam, kathol, shirish, dimolu, kohee, koroi, arjuna, amla, kadam, krishnasure, aizar, two types of neem, bagori etc (all local names). Most he planted himself; others grew from the seeds dispersed by winds, birds and the Brahmaputra. The forest now had fullfledged fauna consisting of Elephants, tigers, rhinos , deers, monkeys, rabbits, vultures and other birds etc !

Central Park in Manhattan in New York, a famous man made jungle is spread over 843 acres (341 hectares). It was created thanks to the efforts of many men and machinery.

If Central Park is larger than countries of Monaco(202 hectares) and Vatican city (44 hectares), then this forest (now called mulai kathonibari or Mulai forest) is larger than Gibralter (area 680 hectares) of Great Britain and comparable to area cocos island of Australia (1373 hectares).

Jadav Payeng’s fame spread slowly. Initially it was confined to local media. From 2012 till 2015, he became known mainly among academic circles and he was honoured by JNU (2012) where he was hailed as Forest Man of India. In 2013, he was honoured by Indian Institute of Forest Management.

Earlier, only people have access to corridors of power used to get government awards. Now a days, public are being encouraged to nominate people for such awards. That is how many unknown and unsung people are being recognised these days. That is how someone recommended his name for Padmshree Award and he received Padmshree Award at the hands of President Pranob Mukherji in 2015.

The Padmshree recognition caught the eyes of media and gave him world wide recognition. Many TV channels of various languages have visited him and have featured him in their TV programs. Even International media have covered him. He began to be called nationwide and even abroad to attend seminars and conferences.

Though a school drop out, he has vast knowledge about nature and he talks like an environmentalists that he actually is. He has knowledge which many theoretical environmentalists may not be aware of. For instance, he knows that Rhinos, Elephants and ungulates prefer to eat three different kinds of grasses. He is not familar with the English or scientific names of these grasses though.

He gets invited all over India and also abroad. wherever he goes, he is on the lookout for seeds of plants, which he keeps in his pocket. He manages to bring all these seeds with him to his native place in Assam and then plants them in the forest.

All this fame and recognition has not changed him. he is the same humble person that he was earlier. He did all this not for awards, but because he strongly believed in the cause. That is how he could go about this tast unrecognised and unsung for three decades.

Though not formally educated, he is an environmentalist at heart. He insists that Environment schience should be made compulsory in primary schools. Every kid, when he starts schooling should be given two saplings. He should be responsible for their care. By the time he leaves school some one decade later, his two plants would be full fledged trees. As for senior people not in school, they should plant one plant and nurture it. That way everyone of us would ensure our continued survival in earth.

“Man is responsible for the well-being of all animals and birds in this world,” Payeng explains. “If man does not take care of all animals, who will?”

Jadav Payeng lived in his hut in his jungle till 2011. Then he moved to “mainland”, namely a village called Eklong Mising Gaon near Kokilamukh in Jorhat in 2011, mainly to take care of the schooling needs of his three children.

He still goes to his jungle regularly from his “mainland” home, which involves walk on foot for a few kilimeters, followed by a treacherous boat ride over a stream of River Brahmputra, then walk of a few kilometeres, then another boat ride in another treacherous stream of river Brahmputra, and finally a trek of several kilometers before he reaches his jungle. Then the same trek back home.

To appreciate the logistics, I have provided the google earth image of his forest. One can also see the vastness of the river. As mentioned above, this small island is larger than some small nations of the world. The jungle grown by Jadav Payeng itself is larger than the smallest nations of the world.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce Jadav Payeng, the great self made environmentalist of India. What he singlehandedly achieved despite absolute lack of resources, encouragement and guidance is simply astonishng and out of the world. I am happy that his efforts were finally recognised, even if it took more than three decades.

I hope that we will not just pay lip service to his contributions, but that we will actually try and do out sincere bit for nature and environment.

The song that accompanies this writeup talks about the effects of hot weather as well. So pretty lady- Helen, who else, beseeches her beau to take her to Shimla, seeing how hot it is in the city. Let us grow more threes, so the temperatures in our cities remain under control. Else, even hill cities where people like to go to during summer will become as hot as plain during summer season. We are already witnessing this.

“Raaja Jaani”(1972) was produced by Madan Mohla and directed by Mohan Sehgal for Seven Arts Pictures, Bombay. This “social” (1972)movie had Dharmendra, Hema malini, Nadira, Sajjan, Premnath, Prem Chopra, Johnny Walkar, Durga Khote, Rajan Haksar, HeeraLal, Lata Sinha, Madhup Sharma, Jankidass, Bhushan Tiwari, Kamaldeep, C.S.Dubey, Pal Sharma, Bindu, Manmohan, Helen etc in it.

The movie had six songs in it. Four songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the fifth song from “Raaja Jaani”(1972) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Lata. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The picturisation shows Hema Malini and Durga Khite seated on Royal thrones and then we find Helen dancing. Next we see Hema Malini standing near Helen and lip syncing this song while lots of people, including Premnath, Dharmendra and Prem Chopra looking on while seated on their chairs.

I have not seen the movie but going by the picturisation, it seems that Hema Malini plays double role in he movie and the movie. The movie, despite its chaalu story and chaalu music managed to do well at the box office. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra who felt that this was the last remaining song of the movie. No, another chaalu song from this song, which was quite popular during its time is still left to be covered. 🙂
