Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part XXVIII: Year 1974

In this episode, we discuss Lata Mangeshkar songs that she sang in Hindi movies released in 1974.

In 1974, 132 Hindi movies containing 627 songs were released. Lata Mangeshkar got to sing in 55 of these movies and she sang 104 songs in these movies. So Lata Mangeshkar’s voice was heard in 41.7 % of the movies released in 1971. Her voice was heard in 16.6 % of the songs appearing in the movies of 1974.

Lata Mangeshkar worked with 12 music directors and 18 lyricists in these 55 movies released in 1974. Shankar Jaikishan with 432 songs in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar were the leading music directors for her followed by Laxmikant Pyarelal with 385 songs. C Ramchandra was in third position with 274 songs. Other top music directors for Lata Mangeshkar were Kalyanji Anandji (239), Chitragupta (235), Madan Mohan (186), S D Burman (169), Roshan (144), R D Burman (144), Naushad (134), Hemant Kumar (127), R D Burman (125), Anil Biswas (120), Husnlal Bhagatram (108) and Vasant Desai (104). Together these fourteen music directors composed 2801 songs out of 3902 songs that Lata Mangeshkar had sung in Hindi movies till end of 1974. The top nine lyricists till end of 1974 for Lata Mangeshkar were Rajinder Krishan (541), Shailendra (361), Anand Bakshi (355), Majrooh Sultanpuri (307), Hasrat Jaipuri (293), Prem Dhawan (201), Shakeel Badayuni (189), Bharat Vyas (187) and Sahir Ludhianvi (130). These nine lyricists had penned 2564 songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar till that time.

Lata Mangeshkar collaborated with music directors Bhupen Hazarika and Rajesh Roshan for the first time in movies of this year. Lyricist M G Hashmat got to collaborate with Lata Mangeshkar for the first time in movies released this year.

It can be seen from the table of 1974 that Lata Mangeshkar sang 104 songs in 55 movies released in 1974.

69 songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar in movies of 1974 have been covered in the blog. That leaves us with 35 songs from movies of 1974 that are yet to be covered.

All Lata Mangeshkar songs from 34 movies of 1974 are already covered in the blog. So 35 Lata Mangeshkar songs from 21 movies of 1974 are still available to be discussed.

“Ameer Ghareeb”(1974)is alphabetically one of the first movie of 1974 that offers us Lata Mangeshkar songs to be discussed is “Ameer Ghareeb”(1974).

“Ameer Ghareeb”(1974) was produced and directed by Mohan Kumar for MK Films private Limited, Bombay. The movie had Dev Anand, Hema Malini, Premnath, Sujeet Kumar, Ranjeet, Raj Mehra, Sulochana, Junior Mehmood, Master Bunty, Chaman Puri, Mumtaz Begam, V Gopal, Dulaari, Krishnkant, Tuntun, Mohan Choti, Birbal, Ram Mohan, Keshav Rana, Kamaldeep, Ranjan Kapoor, C L Shah, Ridku, Sahu Singh, Subhash Kanal, Jerry, Raj Verma, Uttam Raj, Master Ravi, Master Shailesh in it. Tanuja, Nazima, Sajjan, Kuljeet ere is special roles.

The movie had six songs in it. Five songs have been covered in the blog so far. Lata Mangeshkar has sung in three of these songs. Two Lata Mangeshkar songs (One Lata solo and one male duet) song from the movie have been covered in the past.

Here is the sixth and final song from “Ameer Ghareeb”(1974) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Kishore Kuamr and Lata Mangeshkar. This song is penned by Anand Bakshi. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

This song is “Baith jaa baith gayi khadi ho ja khadi ho gayi”. Raja is a great “fan” of this song and he has gone on record in this blog “admiring” the lyrics of this song. 🙂

When I checked the picturisation of the song, I found that the picturisation is the “need of the script” and may not be as harebrained and far fetched as one suspect it to be. Picturisation shows Dev Anand as a hypotist, trying to hypnotise Hema Malini in a bid to get her to reveal her secrets. That is the reason for lyrics like “baith jaa baith gayi khadi ho jaa khadi ho gayi.” Dev Saab hypnotises Hema Malini and gets her to do as he commands. And that is hy the song has the lyrics that it contains and which has so irked a generation of HFM lovers. 🙂

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. Our beloved Raja, after an absence of many months, reappeared in our hatsapp group yesterday. So here is this song, apparently tailormade for me. It is very much a Raja song, what uith the Lady announcing’_aa gayi raaj aagayi raaja aa gayi”. 🙂

“Warrant”(1975) was directed by Pramod Chakraborty for N P International, Bombay. The movie had Dev Anand, Zeenat Aman, Dara Singh, Satish Kaul, Ajit, Pran, Jankidas, Sulochana, Aparna Chaudhary, Seema Kapoor, Jagdish Raj, V Gopal, Birbal, Habeeb, Pal Sharma, Rajan Kapoor, Kirti, Viju Khote, Ujagar Singh, Lamba, Ratan Gaurang, Praveen Pal, Bunty, Madan Puri, Joginder etc in it.

The movie is described as a “social” movie in HFGK, but it was an “action” movie, ie Dev Anand style action movie. 🙂

I have not seen the movie, but from what I can guage from the picturisation of the songs, Dev Anand plays a crook escaping from the law with Zeenat Aman as his accomplice. Zeenat Aman would play a similar role with Amitabh Bachchan in “Don”(1978) and that movie, unlike “Warrant” (1975) went on to become a super duper hit mainly thanks to Amitabh Bachchan’s superb performance.

I have noticed that the story line of Dev Anand movies of 1970s used to be great but Dev Saab’s insistence on playing the hero in these movies ensured that the movies failed to do justice to the story and they would get forgotten soon. Thankfully, Dev Saab would often reject some movies and his roles in those movies were then given to some other actor and that actor enacted the roles with aplomb. For instance, Dev saab had rejected the movie “Tumsa Nahin Dekha”(1957). That role was then offered to a strugling actor called Shammi Kapoor and we all know that the movie “Tumsa Nahin Dekha”(1957) launched the career of Shammi Kapoor. 16 years later, Dev saab refused another movie. This movie was then offered to another struggling actor. He played the role so well that the movie launched him as the next big star. That movie, which Dev saab rejected was “Zanjeer”(1973) which was offered to Amitabh Bachchan and the rest is history.

Had Dev saab not rejected “Tumsa Nahin Dekha”(1957) and “Zanjeer”(1973) then HF world may not have discovered Shammi “yahoo” Kapoor and Amitabh “angry young man” Bachchan. And these movies, with Dev Saab in lead roles would have done some moderate business and the movie would have ended up along the lines of say “Warrant”(1975).

I can say the same about other Dev Saab starrer movies like “Ye Gulistaan Hamaara”(1973), “Des Pardes”(1978) etc. They all had great story line, but they failed to do justice to the story line and ended up as normal movies instead of all time super hits.

Coming to “Warrant”(1975), the songs of this movie had caught the imagination of HFM lovers during its time. Its song Ruk jaana O jaana hamse do baatein karke chali jaana was a big rage, thanks to the unique “kuk kuk” sound contained in it. Other songs too were very popular.

The movie had four songs in it. Three songs have been covered in the blog so far.

One can see that the most popular song of the movid, Ruk jaana O jaana hamse do baatein karke chali jaana was covered in the blog within two months after the launch of the blog. But the second song from the movie was covered six years later. The third song was discussed after another five years.

So a movie with just four songs has not yet been YIPPEED in the blog in nearly 12 years !

Here is the fourth and final song from the movie. This song “suno bhai baaraati” was quite popular during its time.

I have not watched the movie. I watched the picturisation of the song just no. Song is great but the picturisation would not impress people who insist on trying to find logic in the proceedings. The picturisation shows Dev saab and Zeenat Aman being pursued by police. A Christian wedding is taking place in a nearby church. The hero and heroine go and get dressed as groom and bride and give police the slip. I never knew that one can get dressed in wedding dress so fast. where did they locate their dresses so fast ? And how come the people gathered to attend the wedding in the Church started celebrating the fake wedding of our hero and heroine with such gusto and theyeven sang chorus in Konkani in the song ?

Here is the song. It is sung by Kishore Kumar. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.

I am unable to mnote don the Konkani portion sung by the chorus. I request our knowledgeable readers familiar with Konkani to help fill in the Konkani lyrics.

Welcome all to this post where we are discussing the collaboration’ between Sahir and his music directors.

Today we will be looking into a ‘three-movies collaboration’ where we have only one Music director Madan Mohan teaming up with lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi for the following three movies;

We move to the older movie first which is ‘Joshila-1973’.

‘Joshilaa-1973’ or ‘Joshila’ was directed by Yash Chopra for ‘Trimurti Films Pvt Ltd’. It was produced by Gulshan Rai.

Hullo Atuldom

I have been getting reminders and ‘pokes’ (a term from Facebook) in the form of personal messages from a few Atulites who are asking me why the sudden slump on my part. Now I know what Atulji goes through when all of us question him on “Blank days”. I also am feeling like the first-follower of the blog ‘Rajaji’ who took a few weeks to reach his 200th post with ghodi pe hoke sawaar.

This slump can be attributed to the festival season and having my Mom-in-law for company. I would like to copy-paste a thought that Rajaji has written in his 200th post (sorry for not taking your permission Rajaji)

“No excuses though – if Atul can write up and post songs every single day, I just cannot have an excuse for taking five weeks for one post. :-)”.

In spite of the mentioned reasons I managed to sneak in my post number 399 and that was only 10 days back.

December 3rd is one of those days in the calendar, followed by ASAD, which has two occasions to have special posts. To start of let me wish the “Raunaq-e-blog” a very happy birthday. This was a title bestowed on the recipient in a post three years ago on this date. May she have a healthy, peaceful, musical and joyful day. May her appearances on the blog and WA group be more regular. Wishing our Ben Katie a very happy birthday. On this day I present you a song of the forever PACHCHEES romantic hero of the 50s, 60s, 70s, and the better part of the 80s. May you be as Evergreen and Hyperactive as him.

I went through the filmography of the forever Pachchees Dev Anand and found a few songs of his first decade in the film industry yet to be posted here on the blog. I had almost made up my mind about the song too. One such song was from the movie “Ham Bhi Insaan Hain” (1948) of which the blog has only four from a possible nine songs. But the hurdle for me was the name of the music director “H P Das”. A name new to me; as also the names Amir Banu, Ramola Devi, German, Niharika, Pal, G. Das etc. I decided that this movie and its songs should be handled by the more knowledgeable stalwarts of ASAD. I decided that I shall tread on safe territory and have chosen a song from a movie of the 70s.

I have seen this movie ages ago on Doordarshan and recall that it had something to do with the construction of a bridge to connect India’s North East with the rest of the country. The favoured villain of those times- Pran- played a chieftain of that region who is against the bridge construction as this will lead to the betterment of the locals whom he has kept under his bondage. Sharmila Tagore played the local girl who is ready to take up arms at her Chief’s behest and goes on a mission to sabotage the bridge. Dev Anand played the engineer in-charge of the Bridge Project and also the reason for Sharmila Tagore’s change of opinion about the bridge, its construction, and her chief ‘Deng Do Rani’ (Pran). Johnny Walker, Lalita Pawar, Sujit Kumar, Kanan Kaushal, Jayshree T., Keshto Mukherjee, Asrani, Iftikaar etc played supporting characters. The movie had music by S. D. Burman and Anand Bakshi was the lyricist. The movie’s title was picked up from Allama Iqbal’s patriotic song “Saare Jahaan se Achcha”. In fact “saare jahaan se achcha” features in the movie too in the voice of Sushma Shrestha and chorus.

Gori gori gaaon ki gori re was the first song to be posted. Mera naam yaao mere paas aao was next. Then came this song Naina soyi soyi raina jaage jaage by our in-house encyclopedia who has made some interesting observations about Lata singing with Uncommon Singers. There was another uniqueness about that song- it was possibly the only time when Lata, SD Burman and RD Burman featured together.
The last song to be posted has been Ho tushima ree tushima aa gaya toofaan by Sadanand Kamathji and it was a tribute to Burmanda on his anniversary.

There are three more songs left of which the film version of “Saare Jahaan se Achcha” is one.

Before we get on to the song I must thank Atulji for allowing us as contributors on his blog and posting my mail to him giving details of the song as my first post ever as lyrics- contributor. That prompted me to send a few more lyrics as farmaishes and then the writing bug bit me and the number of days between my posts have been steadily reducing. I know my contributions are not masterpieces but my own thoughts and feelings. How I wish I had the patience of Sadanandji to write well-researched posts. Or the knowledge of Arunkumarji whom I call Guruji or even the resources (read HFGK) of people like Sudhri, Avinashji etc. I must also mention the love of Nahmji’s love for poetry and poets and her posts have been enlightening.

Today’s song is filmed on Dev Anand and a bunch of kids something on the lines wallah kya nazaara hai mausam bada pyaara hai, galiyon galiyon khaak bahut din humne chhaani; hans tu hardam khushiyaan ya-gham etc. These were the songs that followed “Ye Gulsitaan Hamaara” but all were feel-good songs where Dev Anand is trying to cheer the crowd. It is in the voice of Kishore Kumar. It is nine years since Devsaab passed away and it feels like yesterday. Thinking of the fabulously stylish and charming actor who entertained us for decades.

Dev Anand – 97th Birth Anniversary

Dharamdev Pishorimal Anand (26 September 1923 – 3 December 2011), is the full name of the dashing, debonair yet chocolate hero of the 50’s, also nicknamed as the ever green actor, he was a hero, director, producer and what not. He is known for never say die attitude and being a gentleman of the old world sense. He formed a trio of superstars with Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor in the black n white era.

He was like a shining star which kept shining when all his neighbour, were laid down by age, health and simply lack of motivation. In the old ways, the culture of the film industry was about respect of seniors, treating others including junior artists, with respect and values which were based on humanity and equality in opportunities etc. The background of Dev Anand is an educated family of means. Plus that was an erawhen people with means had rich tastes and it converted into their conduct and dealing with fellow human beings. I have no knowledge how charitable or not Dev Anand himself was, because charity is not just sharing of monetary wealth, but sharing of positivity and knowledge also amounts of charity. Of course, there are people with such meanness in their makeup they will not lift an eyebrow, to facilitate someone else. And if such a person did lift an eyebrow, and someone else was slightly benefitted from it, the former will not like it. Ah…. I don’t know where I am going with this, but this is not towards Dev Anand.

I have recently seen his movies, “Kaala Bazaar” “Manzil” and “Kaala Paani” on youtube. Other unforgettable movie are such classics as “Guide”, “Tere Ghar Ke Saamne , “Jewel theif”, etc. I have read the Wikipedia page on Dev Anand. As I read through it, things got curious, as there is not filmography there. Very few films are mentioned, some of them I am yet to see. Zeenat Aman finds a mention as being discovered by him, but there is no mention of “Hare Rama Hare Krishna”. Also I found amiss the mention of his brothers Vijay Anand and Chetan Anand who were instrumental in his life and career. No mention of his great equation with SDB-RDB and Kishore Kumar.

There is also this line :
“Guru Dutt, Mohammed Rafi, Pran, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Nargis, Kishore Kumar, S.D. Burman and R.D. Burman were his closest friends from the film industry.” If a man is known by the company he keeps, than there are no better examples.

The song I am presenting as a tribute to Dev Anand on his 97th birth anniversary is from the film “Amir Garib” (1974). The song comprises of two separate solos, by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar, which are the mirror images of each other. The song picturization and the lyrics are also mirroring each other. Both songs are picturised on Dev Anand and Hema malini, singing the two solos. With colourful clothes, a beach, an open jeep on the beach, than the Swimming pool at the Sun & Sand just beyond the Juhubeach(Common in both songs, with extra’s looking like Europeans in colourful swim suits) and a park road with a tonga ride. This is a beach song, tonga song, car song swimming pool song, teasing song, pacifying song all rolled into one.

About version songs which are mirror image of each other, I can recall one song from the film “Himalaya ki god mein”

The date today is 15 november 2019. It was on this day thirty years ago (on 15 november 1989) that Sachin Tendulkar made his test debut. By a remarkable coincidence, it was on this day fifty years ago (viz on 15 november 1969) that Gundappa Vishwanath made his test debut as well.

A test match is being played today (15 november 2019) by India at Indore. It was while watching this match that I became aware that it was exactly thirty and fifty years ago that two Indian batting legends made their test debuts.

These batting legends enhanced the stature of Indian batting. Seeing their batting, lots of batting talents came up in India. If today Indian batting is regarded as the strongest among all test playing nations then Gundappa Vishwanath and Sachin Tendulkar have played inspirational and important roles in that. It was appropriate that Indian batsmen “celebrated” the occasion by dishing out a memorable batting performance today- they hammered 406 runs in one day of test cricket. Last one hour saw more than one hundred runs being scored as T20 rate.

This occasion needs to be celebrated in the blog too, with a suitable song. While searching for a suitable song, I became aware that “Awwal Number”(1990) was a movie that centered around cricket.

“Awwal Number”(1990) was produced and directed by Dev Anand. This movie had Dev Anand, Aamir Khan, Aditya Pancholi, Neeta Puri, Ekta, Sudhir Pandey, Vikram Gokhale, Parikshat Sahni, Ram Mohan, Anjan Srivastava, Bharat Bhushan, Birbal, Sameer Khakkar, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Raj Kishore, Manmouji, Mac Mohan, Asha Sharma, Subbiraj, Ajit Vachchani, Aftab Shivdasani etc in it.

I was aware about the movie, but I was not aware that this movie was about cricket. It was not only about cricket, it even had a song about cricket. Just what the doctor ordered, as Ravi Shashstri, in his commentating avatar would have said.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

With today’s post/ song the concerned movie achieves “YYIIPPEEEEhood”- a word on the lines of adulthood; not found in any standard dictionary and a creation of this blog just like “atuldom” and “atulites”.

The movie debuted on the blog on 18th January, 2010 and has had a rather slow run on the blog. The movie itself was huge hit in its time with all its songs still on the minds and lips of HFM lovers. (I was a child and I am not sure if I have seen it in a movie hall but have seen it umpteen times on TV.) I am not going into the minute details about the movie and say that it was directed by Dev Anand for his home production. I will also not say that the songs were written by Anand Bakshi and R D Burman was the music director. But the minute the song is posted the reaction is going to be “yeh abhi baaki hai?!!!” This was the reaction to the previous post from this movie too. In fact, Guruji had wondered how that song had escaped from being posted all these years considering it was THE MOST POPULAR song from the movie. My answer to that query would be “so that we could have that wonderful post from you, Sirji.” And the bigger reaction will be “this movie is not yet YYIIPPEEEED!!!” That is why I say wonders don’t cease in this blog of ours.
We are revisiting “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” today. This movie had seven songs and six songs -one of them being a multi-version song- are already posted.

The reason to revisit the movie today, is to wish the romantic leading lady -Mumtaz- on her 72nd birthday. She has had a journey in Bollywood that started as child star, extra, heroines’ friend etc in A- grade movies as a teenager and heroine of stunt films with Dara Singh etc. Her first adult role was that of the hero Rajendra Kumar’s sister in “Gehra Daag”. She had to wait a long time before bursting on the top heroine slot. By the time she reached the heroine slot she had played a dancer- vamp etc in “Mere Sanam”, “Khandaan”, “Kaajal’’ etc. Possibly the first time her comic side made itself felt was as ‘Meena’ in Mehmood’s “Pyar Kiye Jaa”. Her best times started with “Boond Jo Ban Gayi Moti” where she was heroine to Jeetendra after which she paired him in movies like “Jigri Dost” “Khilona” “Ek Naari Ek Brahmachari” and some more with a guest appearance in “Humjoli”. First time she paired with Rajesh Khanna was in “Do Raaste” followed by “Bandhan” “Roti” “Aap Ki Kasam” etc. She paired opposite the Khan brothers – Feroz and Sanjay- in “Aadmi aur insaan” “Apradh” “Mela” “Dhadakan” “Upasana” etc. So, what I want to highlight here is that many male actors who were lead stars in the movies during the 60s, when Mumtaz played a nimble-footed dancer or second lead-heroine sought her in the 70s to be their main romantic lead; she played heroine to Rajendra Kumar in “Tangewala”. In her career that lasted till 1977 – “Aaina” with Rajesh Khanna was her last as a heroine when she took retirement from movies in favour of family life- she had acted with actors ranging from Dara Singh, Sunil Dutt, Sanjeev Kumar, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Rajesh Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, Feroz and Sanjay Khan. She even did a movie with Amitabh Bachchan as her hero.

Let us wish our “Kaanchi” a long and healthy life. Wish you a very happy birthday Mumu a.k.a Mumtaz.

Story and Screenplay of this movie was written by K.A. Narayan. Dialogues for this movie were written by Rakesh Pant. The editing of this movie was done by Babu Lavande.

This movie had total seven songs (including one multiple version song). All of its songs were written by Rajinder Krishan, and music was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar gave their voices to the songs in this movie.
Lata Mangeshkar had sung three solo songs, Kishore Kumar had two solo and Asha Bhonsle had one solo songs in this movie. The movie had one duet song sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 20.03.1973.

I remember to have watched this movie during my childhood but I have forgotten most of it by now except its songs. I liked Bure bhi ham bhale bhi ham…ham hain Banarasi Babu very much then, perhaps because of its catchy tune. I had even memorized this song then and I remember it even today. That also happened to be the most popular song from this movie which finished at thirtieth number in the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala list’ of 1973.

I also recall that other songs from this movie were also nice and they were frequently heard on radio or loud speakers. Like, ‘mere peecche ek ladki’ (multiple version song, posted on 03.12.2017), ‘aap yahaan se jaane ka kya loge’, ‘tauba tauba sharaab badnaam ho gayi’, ‘qamar meri lattoo’, and the today’s song ‘koi koi raat aisi hoti hai’.

I was under the impression that these songs must have been covered earlier so it came as a surprise to me when I found that they are yet to be posted on the blog.

For today’s post I have selected the song ‘koi koi raat aisi hoti hai’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar, which a nice hummable song. It is a regular on radio even today.
This song is lip synced by Rakhi on screen and we can see Dev Anand also present there, for whom Rakhi is singing the song but she is not aware that this Dev Anand is not the same that she is looking for. 🙂

Mohammed Rafi : The Incomparable (II) – Song No. 10

As story telling songs go, my personal favourite song is
this song from “Jab Jab Phool Khile”. Another such song which is readily coming to mind is this
this post written by me.

There are more such wonderful songs in this genre in Hindi films. While looking for a Mohammed Rafi song for the 15KSMC, I found this song, which is sort of storytelling and kids entertainment song. It’s a pure Solo song from the 50’s written by Rajendra Krishan and composed by C. Ramchandra for the film Insaaniyat(1955).

One more feature of this song is that it has Agha(senior) singing it for the benefit of kids watching describing the antics by a monkey. From the page containing Anniversay dates I find that the veteran character and comic actor Aghajan Baig was born on 21st March 1914 at Pune and died on 30/04/1992 also in Pune. So this year on 30/04/2019, it is Agha’s 27th death anniversary. There are many songs which Agha has been seen singing on screen. He had at least two solo Rafi songs in this film “ Insaaniyat” alone. So by this yardstick there are a few more songs picturized on him may still remain to be posted. One more song which is Agha is singing on screen is this one .
One more poignant Rafi solo highlighting the plight of the deprived and under preliviged. Another significant song on him is this this song .

Last week a younger work-mate and a friend, who is maybe born in the 80’s described a person (who looks like Agha actually) as ‘Shakaal’. I tried to explain that he is actually very similar to Agha looks-wise, but she did not know who was Agha. Even saying that he was a comic character actor from black & white movies and Jalal Agha’s father failed to ring a bell. So there came this memory from long back, of a TV ad featuring Agha. This was the advert for ‘Brittania Coconut Cookies”. Here Agha is seen wearing a sherwani walking down a garden of coconut trees swinging his walking stick. One coconut falls down, hits him on the head before hitting the ground . Agha picks up the coconut, which is broken and opens into two pieces of the shell with the biscuits inside. The catch phrase of the add was “ab brittania ne nariyal ko kurmurana sikhaya’. Of course Agha is seen eating the biscuit and enjoying it. I tried to find if the that ad clip is available on the net, but could not find it.

Anyway, this song was there with lyrics written down and a look at the Anniversary page made the writing of this post a must.

Clearly Mohammed Rafi sahab’s is enjoying singing this song. A cheerful and peppy no. I heard this only today that the thespian had said to someone ‘that “Mohammad Rafi” is the name given to him by his parents and he prefers to be called Mohammed Rafi instead of Rafi Sahab’.

Actually when I had stumbled upon this blog and thought of looking at the stats page, the first name I tried to find is Mohammed Rafi. No one can imagine my shock when the name was not there in the M list of singers. Thankfully I thought to look under R also as I was on the page and looking in the correct list of singers.

Some may say “ what is there in a name ?”, so I am certainly not in a position to insist that the blog also call him by his given full name.

So this is song No. 10 of the series, which will continue at least till 31st July.

Wonder pe Thunder !

Today’s song is from film ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ (1971). When I found that this very popular and famous song of the early 70s was yet to be covered in the blog, my first reaction was to disbelieve it. I was almost sure that there was some mistake. I scanned the entire ‘H’ alphabet film list, bur could not see this song under any heading. Then I checked the year wise and MD wise lists – with same result. I was wondering how this song has escaped from the keen eyes of our contributors, who are specialists in the songs of the 70s ! At the end of it, I even checked with Atul ji, who confirmed that the song, indeed, was yet to be covered by us. This was a bonanza for me.

This is one of the songs of RD Burman, which I liked very much. Comparatively, he was one of the new composers in those times – in my opinion – though he had already done about 40 films before ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ (HRHK). In last few years I had liked few songs from his earlier films like ‘Parichay’ (1972), ‘Seeta aur Geeta’ (1972), ‘Caravan’ (1971), ‘Kati Patang’ (1970) and ‘Teesri Manzil’ (1966). However, he suffered in my hands, due to my biased view of film songs of the period of 70s and beyond and except few more songs of RD Burman, I never liked his music, which in general I felt, was too loud and mostly copied from other sources (see several U-Tube videos on this issue, as a proof). However, I concede that he was a worthy son of a worthy composer compared to some other composer-son composers and that his music was much better than theirs and that he lasted for a longer period, cut short only by his sudden death in 1994, at the age of 55 years.

Today’s song is sung by Asha Bhosle and chorus and its video shows that it was sung on screen by a Hippie Girl (Zeenat Aman) amidst a smoking Hippie crowd. Somewhere in the year 1966, I had visited Goa (Panaji) to participate in a conference. During my visit, we had 2 free days and we roamed around the beautiful beaches of Goa. Goa had been liberated from the Portuguese about 6 years back and the Indian tourists did not have enough time yet to spoil the beaches and cities of Goa. So we could really enjoy our trip. During our beach visits we saw many Hippie groups, behaving in a ‘who cares’ attitude on the beaches. No wonder, many of my colleagues took their photographs to show in their respective private circles. That was a time when the Hippie culture had spread around the world.

Hippie (also spelled hippy) people were members of a counter cultural movement during the 1960s and 1970s, that rejected the mores of mainstream American life. The movement originated on college campuses in the United States, and also spread to other countries. Hippies felt alienated from middle-class society, which they saw as dominated by materialism and repression, and they developed their own distinctive lifestyle. They favoured long hair and casual, often unconventional, attire, sometimes in ‘psychedelic’ colours.

Many males grew beards, and both men and women wore sandals and beads. Long flowing granny dresses were popular with women, and rimless granny glasses with both men and women. Hippies commonly took up communal or cooperative living arrangements, and they often adopted vegetarian diets based on unprocessed foods and practiced holistic medicine. Hippies tended to be dropouts from society, foregoing regular jobs and careers, although some developed small businesses that catered to other hippies.

Hippies advocated non-violence and love, a popular phrase being “Make love, not war,” for which they were sometimes called ‘flower children’. They promoted openness and tolerance as alternatives to the restrictions and regimentation they saw in the middle-class society. Hippies often practiced open sexual relationships and lived in various types of family groups. They commonly sought spiritual guidance from sources outside the Judeo-Christian tradition, particularly Buddhism and other Eastern religions. Hippies promoted the recreational use of hallucinogenic drugs, particularly marijuana and LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide), in so-called head trips, justifying the practice as a way of expanding consciousness.

By the mid-1970s the movement had waned, and by the 1980s hippies had given way to a new generation of young people who were intent on making careers for themselves in business and who came to be known as yuppies (young urban professionals). Nonetheless, hippies continued to have an influence on the wider culture, seen, for example, in more relaxed attitudes toward sex, in the new concern for the environment, and in a widespread lessening of formality.

Film HRHK was Dev Anand’s idea. Initially, he wanted Zahida to become its Heroine. She, however rejected the offer when she learnt that in the film, she would be Dev’s sister – Jasbir. Dev Anand also wanted SD Burman to do the music. When Dada heard the original story, in which Zeenat falls in love with Dev, not knowing that he was her brother, Dada flatly refused the film and also advised Dev to change the story, as Indian public would be averse to an incest story. Eventually RD Burman was selected as MD.

Similarly, this song – “Dum Maaro Dum” was originally to be a duet of Usha Uthup and Lata Mangeshkar. Possibly Asha Bhosle, who was on the verge of leaving OPN and joining RD Burman (who had applied for a divorce with Rita –  his wife) scuttled the plan and the song came to Asha as a solo and another duet with usha Uthup. RD burman then changed the whole tune of the song, using Asha’s skill of singing in higher pitches.

All songs of this film became popular, especially “Phoolon Ka Taaron Ka Sabka Kehna Hai” and “Dum Maaro Dum” were heard everywhere. The lyrics of the song “Dum Maaro Dum” were very apt to indicate and describe the philosophy and frustration of the younger generation in that period –

All this clearly indicated what was eating the minds of young people.

Fortunately, 70s was the period when the Hippie culture was on decline worldwide. As such, this type of philosophy and such cult did not fit into the Indian mind set in any case. Therefore, this culture did not grow much here and had a natural end – like everywhere else in the world.

Two interesting anecdotes about this film. One, Dev Anand in his autobiography -“Romancing With Life “, published in 2007, had confessed that during this film, he had fallen in love with Zeenat. He was to make a confession to her, when he learnt that she had gone very close to Raj Kapoor. In one party, he also saw Raj kapoor hugging Zeenat and she was responding to him. Dev was disillusioned. He knew that Zeenat was keen to work in RK’s film ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’, and that all this was due to that only. He simply removed her thought from his mind.

Second is about the Burmans. In the program ‘Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan’, Pancham narrated that – “Papa used to go for morning walk everyday in Juhu. People recognised him and would say, look, SD Burman is going. One day he came back very excited. He told me, today people recognised me and said, Look RD Burman’s father is going. Papa was proud of me that my music in HRHK was famous and popular.”

Nandu Chawathe- a leading fiddler and violinist was associated with Pancham in those days. This person – Nandu Chawathe, was a guest in one of our get togethers of Atulites in Mumbai, thanks to one of our members Nitin ji Shah. He had played some songs on his violin in that meeting,  Chawathe says that Dev Anand was very much upset, when Asha replaced Lata and Pancham took time to compose the new tune for Asha Bhosle. The final product, however, pleased Dev Anand.

The story of the film, as given in wiki, is –

In the background of the rise of the International Hare Krishna movement in the 1970s, is a Montreal-based family of the Jaiswals, consisting of mom, dad, son, Prashant, and daughter, Jasbir. Due to differences, Mr and Mrs Jaiswal separate, leaving Jasbir with dad, and Prashant with his mom. Eventually Prashant and his mom travel to India, leaving father and daughter behind in Montreal. Mr. Jaiswal remarries, and brings his new wife to live in his home. Jasbir is told by her nanny that her mother & brother are dead. Back in India Prashant is sent to a boarding school and his father makes sure that none of Prashant’s letters reach Jasbir, so that it would be easy on her part to get over emotional trauma. Jasbir is upset with her inconsiderate step-mother and ignorant father who is deeply immersed in his business.

Years later, Prashant has grown up to be a pilot. He has received a letter from his dad that Jasbir, who had rebelled and left home, is now located in Kathmandu, Nepal, with a group of hippies. Prashant decides to find his sister and hopefully get her back to the family. When Prashant lands in Kathmandu he does not find Jasbir, but instead finds Janice, who is indeed his sister with a new name. Janice has no recollection of her childhood, and is always in the company of hippies spending most of her time consuming alcohol & drugs with them.

Janice lives with the hippies in the property rented out by local landlord Drona. Drona’s real business is stealing ancient artifacts from Kathmandu and selling it to foreign nationals. Michael, one of the hippies, is the one who does all the dirty work for him. Janice’s boyfriend Deepak misunderstands that Prashant is trying to woo Janice, hence they exchange a few blows every time they meet. Meanwhile, Drona has an eye on Shanti, a local salesgirl working in one of the shops owned by him. Shanti has feelings for Prashant which creates one more enemy for him. Later Prashant and Shanti elope and get married. At the same time a precious idol is stolen from local temple by Michael, which he hides in Janice’s house. Prashant secretly observes all this. Drona tries to frame Shanti for theft by secretly planting another stolen artifact in her house. Later he spreads the word that since the day Prashant has arrived idols are being stolen and he is stalking local girls.

The police commissioner is a friend of Prashant’s father, and has already received a letter stating the purpose of Prashant’s visit to Kathmandu. He suspects that Drona is trying to frame Prashant because he has married Shanti. He gets a search warrant for the entire property of Drona and recovers a diary which has contact details of his friends abroad who help him sell the stolen artifacts. The police also recover the stolen artifact from Shanti’s home, squarely blaming Prashant for it. Shanti is deeply hurt by this and looks around for Prashant. Prashant meanwhile is with Janice, trying to convince her that he is her brother, who she had been told dead long back. Michael overhears the conversation & conspires to put the blame on the brother-sister duo. Taking advantage of the situation Drona and Michael instigate the locals against Prashant by framing him for the theft and duping Shanti under pretext of marriage. The hippies and the locals are now ready to bash Prashant the moment they come across him.

When Prashant again tries to meet Janice, the hippies give him a solid thrashing. The police commissioner intervenes and Prashant is saved. At the same time the true face of Drona is uncovered and he meets his end trying to run away from police. Janice sees that both her parents have arrived to meet her and realizes that Prashant is indeed her brother. Janice is deeply hurt that her parents had to see her in this state. She runs away from them and commits suicide. In her suicide note she tells Prashant how deeply she loved him and she never intended him to find her in this state and suicide was the only way out for her.

‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ (released on 9-12-1971) was a Landmark film for Navketan – a film production company, which could boast of a world record (yet unbeaten) that the company was run for 62 years by the same person who established it in 1949 ! The cult song “Dum Maaro Dum” became so popular that no function was complete without this song for the next 10 years! Enjoy this song here today…..
