Today’s song is sung by Manhar and Suman Kalyanpur and on screen it is lip-synced by Sanjay Khan and Radha Saluja.
This is a nice duet song as usual which happens after the misunderstanding between the hero and heroine are resolved and they came to know that though their ways were different their objective is the same.

Today 28th January’2023 also happens to be the eighty-seventh birthday of Singer Suman Kalyanpur. And on this occasion we wish her a ‘very Happy Birthday and healthy and peaceful life ahead’ and listen this lovely song sung by her.

Today’s song is from the film Lalkaar-1972.

It is not common to see me writing on a film after 1970. I have been writing on old films since 2012 and have written more than 1100 posts so far on this Blog alone. But on a cursory look at my own figures, I find that I have written less posts on songs from films after 1970. It is certainly not because they are not good, but because my comfort zone is films before 1970, especially before 1960. The stats for my posts say that I wrote

I have always maintained that “not all songs before 1970 are good and not all songs after 1970 are bad. There are good and bad songs in every decade “. The point is I do not listen to songs after 1970 much, as much as those before 1970. Nevertheless, for some really good and appealing songs, I did write on songs from later films ….even for a song of 2018 !

I have selected today’s song because it is a special song. It is the only song sung by Mala Sinha as a Playback singer, though it was shot on her in the film. In the true sense it may not be a ‘ playback song’, but certainly it was pre-recorded and she lip synched on it on the screen. It is a duet with Manhar (Udhas)-younger brother of the more famous singer Pankaj Udhas.

Mala Sinha was an educated, hard working actress. Though she worked with leading Banners and was Heroine to well known Heroes, she was never counted among the Class I Heroines of her Times. She worked with many newcomers, like Dharmendra etc. Her career spanned a long time but she never got a single Filmfare Award, though nominated 4 times.

Mala Sinha was born in a Bengali Nepalese Christian family in Calcutta,on 11-11-1936. Mala Sinha claimed herself to be of a Bengali descent Nepali many years ago in a T.V. interview. They named her Alda. Her friends at school used to tease her by calling her Dalda (a brand of vegetable oil), so she changed her name to Mala. In her childhood she learnt dancing and singing.

Although she was an approved singer of All India Radio, she has sung only one duet-with Manhar- in the film Lalkar-1972. But as a singer she has done stage shows in many languages from 1947 to 1975.

Mala started her career as a child artist in Bengali films Jai Vaishno Devi followed by Shri Krishan Leela, Jog Biyog and Dhooli. Noted Bengali director Ardhendu Bose saw her acting in a school play and took permission from her father to cast her as a heroine in his film Roshanara (1952)-Bangla film, her cinematic debut.

After acting in a couple of films in Calcutta, Mala had to go to Bombay for a Bengali film. There she met Geeta Bali, a noted Bollywood actress, who was charmed by her and introduced her to film director Kidar Sharma. It was Sharma who cast her as a heroine in his Rangeen Ratein-56. Her first Hindi film was Badshah-54 opposite Pradeep Kumar, then came Ekadashi-55, a mythological film. Both failed, but her lead role in Kishore Sahu’s Hamlet-54, paired opposite Pradeep Kumar, fetched her rave reviews in spite of it failing at the box office. Films like Lai Batti (ac­tor Balraj Sahni’s only directorial venture), Nausherwan-E-Adil where she starred as the fair maiden Marcia in Sohrab Modi’s romance about forbidden love and Phir Subah Hogi, which was direc­tor Ramesh Saigal’s adapta­tion of Dosteovsky’s Crime and Punishment established Mala Sinha’s reputation as a versatile actress who took the maximum career risks by accepting unconventional roles.

Mala was a singer of some repute and used to sing for All India Radio; she was not allowed to sing playback (even for herself) in the movies with the lone exception being 1972’s Lalkar. In the 1950s, she had a string of hits opposite Pradeep Kumar like Fashion -1957, Detective -1958, Duniya Na Mane-1959 though their first two ventures had failed. The films she did with Pradeep Kumar were men-oriented. In 1957, noted Bollywood actor and film director Guru Dutt (the husband of Geeta Dutt) cast Mala in his film Pyaasa-1957 in a role originally intended for Madhubala. Mala gave a memorable performance as the relatively unsympa­thetic part of an ambitious woman who chooses to marry a rich man (played by actor Rehman) and have a loveless marriage rather than a poor, unsuccessful poet and her impoverished lover (played by Guru Dutt) whom she ditches. Pyaasa remains to this day a classic in the history of Indian cinema and a turning point for Sinha.

After Pyaasa her major successes were Phir Subah Hogi-1958 and Yash Chopra’s directorial debutsDhool Ka Phool -1959 that elevated her into a major dramatic star. There was no looking back for Sinha then as she was part of many successful movies from 1958 to the early ’60s like Parvarish -1958, Ujala, Main Nashe Mein Hoon, Duniya Na Mane, Love Marriage -1959, Bewaqoof -1960, Maya -1961, Hariyali Aur Rasta and Dil Tera Deewana -1962, Anpadh, Bombay Ka Chor -1962. Critics believe her career best performance was in Bahurani -1963, Gumrah, Gehra Daag, Apne Huye Paraye and Jahan Ara. Apart from pairing with Pradeep Kumar, her pairing opposite Raaj Kumar, Rajendra Kumar,Biswajit and Manoj Kumar in women-oriented films were appreciated by audiences, with her films opposite Biswajitbeing the most popular. She did 10 films with Biswajit. In 2007, they won the Star Screen Lifetime Achievement Award, calling them on stage together giving due respect to their popularity as a pair who have tasted box office success.

The most remarkable feature of Mala Sinha was that most of her 1960s and 1970s hits were fueled by her own star power as much as the heroes and most of the time her role was more powerful than the hero. Though she was pitted opposite her seniors like Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Kishore Kumar, Pradeep Kumar and when she acted opposite the emerging stars from late 1950s like Shammi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar and Raaj Kumar, she made sure her role was as good as theirs.

In 1966, Sinha went to Nepal to act in a Nepali film called Maitighar when the Nepali film industry was still in its infancy. This was the only Nepali film she did in her career. Her hero in the film was an estate owner called Chidambar Prasad Lohani. Soon after, Mala Sinha married C. P. Lohani with the blessings of her parents. From the beginning theirs was a long-distance marriage with Lohani based in Kathmandu to look after his business and Sinha living in Bombay with their daughter Pratibha. She continued acting after her marriage.

From 1974, she cut down on her assignments as the lead actresses. She accepted strong character roles in films like 36 Ghante -1974, Zindagi -1976, Karmayogi -1978, Be-Reham -1980, Harjaee -1981, Yeh Rishta Na Tootay, Babu (film) and Khel, which were popular.

In the early ’90s Madhuri Dixit was promoted as new Mala Sinha in magazines. But, after 1994, she completely withdrew from industry and has given very few public appearances. In Dhool Ka Phool and B.R. Chopra’s Gumrah, she played the first unwed mother and adulterous wife respectively in Hindi cinema. As she grew older, she gracefully moved on to doing character roles that befitted her age. She was last seen in Zid -1994. Though Mala evinced as much interest in her daughter Pratibha’s career as her father did in her career, she was unable to achieve the same success for her daughter.(adapted from nett4you and wiki).

Mala Sinha came from Calcutta to make a career in Bombay films. In Calcutta she worked in a Bilingual film ‘Chitrangada-54’ in Bangla and Hindi. In 54 again, she did her first film in Bombay, Badshah-54, then came Hamlet-54, Riyasat-55 and Ekadashi-55. In all she did 105 films.

In all her interviews, Mala Sinha always quoted “Rangeen Raten”-56 with Shammi Kapoor as her first film in Bombay. She was ashamed of revealing that in film Riyasat-55, her Hero was Mahipal and in film Ekadashi-55 it was Trilok Kapoor. She always hid this fact. There are many Heroines who want to hide their struggling days. For example,in the film “Professor”-62 Shammi Kapoor’s Heroine was Kalpana. Though touted as her first film, her first film was Pyar ki Jeet-62, opposite Mahipal- a fact which Kalpana always hid from everyone.

Similarly, A grade Heroine Meena Kumari also had done several Mythological and costume films before Baiju Bawra took her high up and above other Heroines. Films like Veer Ghatotkach-49, Shri Ganesh Mahima-50, Laxmi Narayan-51, Hanuman Paataal vijay-51 and Alladin aur Jadui Chirag-52 had Mahipal as her Hero. In her later years, she always hid her earlier film Heroes.

Even comedian Johnny Walker, who is supposed to have made a beginning with Baazi-51, had earlier worked in “The last message or Aakhri paigham”-49. However this fact is not told by anyone.

Not only actors, but even singers do this. They hesitate to say that they first sang for C grade films. Take the case of Sudha Malhotra, who used to declare Arzoo-50 as her first film, under Anil Biswas, but she never told that earlier she had sung 3 songs in film Aakhri paigham-49, under the baton of Abid Hussein Khan, composer.

It is very unfortunate that once the artiste becomes famous, he tends to forget his humble beginning with a less known film or a composer. This is because they are ashamed of it. I feel the blame also goes to people who take their interview, because the interview takers do not do proper homework. Many times they do not know anything and simply note down whatever is told by the artiste.

Film Lalkaar-1972 was made by Sagar Art International, Bombay. It was directed by Ramanand Sagar – who became world famous later for screening his record making epic TV serial Ramayana from 25-1-1987 to 31-7-1988. The music was by kalyanji-Anand ji ably assisted by Jaykumar Parte – who was their assistant for many years. Parte is practically unknown to most people. He was not only the most wanted arranger in the industry, but he had given music to 4 Hindi films and 1 Marathi film. The other assistant was Babla-their own younger brother and a well known musician. The third assistant was Frank Fernando – one of the pMD pair of Roy-Frank duo who gave music to only 1 film, Gogola-1966.

The cast of the film lalkaar-1972 was Rajendra Kumar, Mala Sinha, Dharmendra, Kumkum, Dara Singh, Dev Kumar, Ramesh Deo, Nazir Hussain and a long list of other actors. Today’s duet song is the only Hindi film song sung by Mala Sinha in her career. She makes Debut here and ALL her songs are now covered on the Blog, with this song !

‘Cape Fear’ (1962) was a noir psychological thriller that had Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum and Polly Bergen in the cast and was directed by J Lee Thompson. The movie was based on the 1957 novel ‘The Executioners’ by John D. Macdonald. The movie was the story of an attorney whose family is stalked by a criminal he had helped to send to jail.

‘Mangal Dada (1986) was directed by Ramesh Gupta, had Sunil Dutt, Reena Roy, Amjad Khan, Sarika, Satyendra Kapoor, Achala Sachdev, Farida Jalal, Bhagwan Dada, Birbal etc in its cast. Though it released in 1986 it was launched in 1975. It had music by Kalyanji Anandji and songs were written by Shaily Shailendra, Gauhar Kanpuri, and Indeevar. Asha Bhonsle, Lata Mageshkar, Aarti Mukherjee and Manhar Udhas were the playback singers. It seems Reena Roy’s voice was dubbed by someone else.

‘Qayamat’ (1983) was directed by Raj N Sippy. It had Dharmendra, Shatrughan Sinha, Jaya Prada, Poonam Dhillon, Smita Patil in its cast. (Jaya Prada’s was either a special or guest appearance). Majrooh Sultanpuri and RD Burman were the lyricist and music director for songs that were sung by Asha Bhonsle. One song sequence from this movie is posted on the blog as part of Sudhirji’s series on ‘songs repeated in Hindi films’ – this one “Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai“.

‘Kanoon Kya Karega’ (1984) was directed by Mukul Anand and had a cast of Suresh Oberoi, Danny, Deepti Naval, Iftekhar, Shraddha Verma, Sharat Saxena etc. in the cast. The music was by Salil Choudhury but I can’t find any songs attributed to this movie. (I think I have seen this on television).

“Zahreela” (2001) was also directed by Raj N Sippy (he seemed to have been in love with the plot.) The movie’s cast was Mithun Chakravarthy, Om Puri, Kashmera Shah, Gulshan Grover, Shalini Kapoor, etc. The songs were written by Dev Kohli and Anand-Milind were the music directors. Abhijeet, Sudesh Bhonsle, Jaspinder Narula, Purnima, Sonu Nigam, and Preeti Uttam were the playback singers.

I am sure the reader is thinking why I have listed all these movies here. Well all the Hindi films were inspired from ‘Cape Fear’. This statement will give us an idea of the story of all the movies.

This post has a song from ‘Mangal Dada’ which is written by Gauhar Kanpuri and is sung by Manhar Udhas and Lata Mangeshkar.

Gauhar Kanpuri made his debut in Bollywood in 1967 but the real breakthrough came in 1975 when he wrote the songs for Sunil Dutt’s ‘Zakhmee’. After ‘Zakhmee’ he regularly associated with Bappi Lahiri. Many of the songs he wrote went on to become popular:- “Abhi Abhi Thi Dushmani” (Zakhmee), “Ae Mere Humsafar Ae Meri Jaan-e-Jaan” (‘Baazigar’ – 1993), “Tumhe Geeton Mein Dhaaloonga” (‘Saawn Ko Aane Do’ – 1979) to name some. In his career of nearly 25 years he wrote around 300 songs for almost 120 films. The statistics page of our blog says that there are 22 songs written by him on the blog. He was born on 1st October 1932 and passed away on 29th June 2002.

30th June is the birth anniversary of Shri Kalyanji Veerji Shah of the Kalyanji-Anandji music director duo. He would have been 94. I am sure we have enough material on the blog on this music duo and Kalyanji bhai, in particular. We all know that the musical journey of Kalyanji Bhai began when he played the ‘been music‘ for ‘Nagin’ in 1954. A journey that went on for almost 46 years with one popular song following the other. Each and every lover of HFM will have a personal playlist of Kalyanji-Anandji song. The blog has 630 songs of this duo from a possible 1435.

Today’s song must be a rare occasion when K-A associated with Gauhar Kanpuri. I haven’t found a video link to the song; but I am assuming that it is filmed on Sunil Dutt and Reena Roy.

Hullo Atuldom

This post by Avinashji reminded me of today’s song.

“Naam” (1986) had a cast headed by Nutan, Poonam Dhillon, Amrita Singh, Kumar Gaurav and Sanjay Dutt along with a few familiar faces forming the supporting cast. Pankaj Udhas had a guest appearance in the iconic song “Chitthi aayi hai aayi hai chitthi aayi hai“.

Avinashji’s post gives the technical details, censor certificate date, and the complete star cast. All the trivia that I had in mind before commencing this post viz: how the cast of “Mother India” became related post the marriage of Kumar Gaurav (Rajendra Kumar’s son) to Namrata Dutt (daughter of Nargis and Sunil Dutt). Atulji’s post for Chitthi aayi hai aayi hai chitthi aayi hai also mentions how the movie was meant to help Kumar Gaurav’s career but Sanjay Dutt benefited from the movie.

The basic story of the movie was- Nutan is the mother of Ravi (Kumar Gaurav) and Vicky (Sanjay Dutt). Both the sons love each other immensely and but are contrasting characters. Ravi is the more responsible and straight-forward of the two and is forever helping Vicky out of tricky situations. Vicky decides to go to Dubai to earn enough to keep his brother and mother happy and bring the family out of financial problems. Ravi helps him with the documents needed to go to Dubai but unfortunately Vicky finds himself in all kinds of problems on landing in Dubai- fraud visa, entangling with a ruthless underworld led by Rana (Paresh Rawal) etc. The story shifts to Malaysia, as Vicky is sent on an errand by Rana and Ravi ends up following Vicky there to try and bail him out of the mess. But only ends up loosing his beloved brother and bringing back his pregnant widow (Amrita Singh) to India.

Today’s emotional song is sung by Mohammad Aziz and Manhar Udhas. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and Laxmi-Pyare the music directors. This song may not have been popular in its time but deserved to be. THe song has both the brothers getting drunk at the farewell that Ravi has arranged for Vicky.

Let us wish Sanju Baba a very Happy Birthday and lots of health and happiness with this post. I recall having read a news, same time last year, that he was undergoing treatment for lung cancer. Hope he is fit and fine and will be back to what he does best- entertain his fans.

# Superstar Child Artist – Junior Mehmood # 9

Welcome all to the nineth article in this series. In the previous eight posts we have seen songs sung by different singers for Junior Mehmood during late sixtees and early seventees when he was a ‘superstar child sensation’.

The eight songs that we listened earlier were sung by Mohd Rafi(four songs), Lata Mangeshkar(one), Hemlata(one), Shanti Mathur(one) and Asha Bhonsle(one).

Tis series began by exploring songs sung by Rafi Saab for Junior Mehmood when he was ‘child artist and still growing’. Simultaneously we also looked at songs sung by female singers for Junior Mehmood as a ‘child artist’.

It would be interesting to know if there is any song hich as sung by Junior Mehmood for himself. (I am not sure, knowledgeable readers can enlighten us).
Today’s song is one such song, not a full song though, but having few lines sung by Junior Mehmood. In this song he is performing with Manoj Kumar, Nutan, Mohan Choti, Birbal and others.

This song is from the ‘1970’ movie ‘Yaadgaar’.

‘Yaadgaar-1970’ was directed by S. Ram Sharma for ‘Kunal Chitra, Bombay’. A celebration of 100 years of Sahir Ludhianvi – his 700th song being posted on our blog.

A hundred years today. Being celebrated by the 700th post on our blog.

Sahir Ludhianvi – the “. . . Pal Do Pal Ka Shaayar. . .“, who would be actually “. . . Har Ik Pal Ka Shaayar. . .“, being relevant for all times, and responsive to all the pitfalls and tragedies of the human experience. But then also, never to be discounted for romanticism a la “Ye Raat Ye Chaandni Phir Kahaan. . .” and “Yoon To Hamne Laakh Haseen Dekhe Hain“, or even as “Phir Na Keeje Meri Gustaakh Nigaahi Ka Gila“, or the upbeat strings of “Mere Labon Pe Dekho Aaj Bhi Taraane Hain. . .“, or even the most in depth portrayal of the bhakti (devotion) sentiment, as in “Aan Milo Aan Milo Shyaam Saanwre“, and “Tum Bansi Ho Main Taan, Ham Tum Do Nahin” and even more intense in “Aaj Sajan Mohey Ang Laga Lo. . .“.

Yes, it is the poet who is Har Ik Pal Ka Shaayar, touching all the facets of experiences of life, from the time when a child is pining for the moon as a toy, and all the way to the derelict conclusion of the human life as in “Lo Apna Jahaan Duniyawaalo, Hum Is Duniya Ko Chhod Chale“.

Sahir Sb seemed to have an affinity for the phrase ‘pal do pal’. We hear these words in ‘Railway Platform’ (1957) –

In ‘Pyaasa’ of 1957, he had posed three very profound questions in the lines of poetry he wrote for that film. At a personal level, the query was “Jaane Wo Kaise Log The Jin Ke Pyaar Ko Pyaar Mila“. On the plane of social strife and stigma he had asked “Jinhen Naaz Hai Hind Par Wo Kahaan Hain“. And then, the ultimate question of life that he has posed is “Ye Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaaye To Kya Hai“. The film gains its depths, attempting to interpret and address these questions. And more than sixty years later, these questions continue to haunt the discerning mind. Timeless queries, one would say, but still, crystallized for once in words by Sahir.

There is this one incisive insight that the poet possesses, or maybe the other way round, this incisive insight possesses the poet. Each verse, each song that he has penned in his lifetime, goes well beyond the simple words that he wrote. His words, his lines offer you, nay they force you to take a pause and think – what profundity, in just this simple arrangement of 8, 10 or 15 words. And the thought will stay in the mind for much much longer that what it took to simply read the words for once.

This life, ‘zindagi’ – the incisive insight brings out so many facets that the poet examined it. In 1954, he penned the following for ‘Taxi Driver’

For ‘Munim Ji’in 1955, he wrote

With ‘Kaala Pathar’ in 1979 came the motorcycling song that infused the bubbling spirit of freedom and hope.

Coming to the song being presented today. It is a wonder that I thought of, as I listened to this song today after a very long time. Yes, a child pining for getting the moon to play with. And with the ‘बाल हठ’ (a child’s obduracy), it is an overwhelming experience to be able to convince the child and talk it out of its impossible wish. As I listened, I am reminded of the story from the Ramayan – the passage where Ram, as a toddler, one day gets into His mind that he wants the moon to play with. No amount of coaxing and appeasing and promises by the parents and others can talk Him out of His insistence. And the accompanying wailing and waving of arms is making Kaushalya and Dashrath very worried and uncomfortable. Rajguru, Vashishth ji is summoned for help. He arrives and says, well, if the child is wanting the moon, give Him the moon. The parents are confused, and ask Vashishth ji, as to how to make that happen.

Rajguru asks for a large dish (‘परात’) with raised edges. The dish is placed in front of the child, and is filled with water. Instantly, the likeness of the moon is reflected in the water in the dish. So Vashishth ji beckons the child and points to the reflection and says, here is the moon, now play. So the toddler Ram, seeing that the moon is now so close, puts His hands in water, but swish and splash as He may, He is not able to hold in hand, the reflection that can be seen with the eyes. But the splashing play pleases Him, and the wailing is forgotten.

Sahir Sb is addressing the same situation in this song, likely that the child is insisting on visiting ‘Chanda Mama’. And as is the rule in Hindi films – well, you have a song to for a three-minute-disposition-of-a-difficult-situation. The lines in the song are actually trying to reason with the child, based on some simple logic statements, that aim at convincing the child that they (the three bad men in the film) are much better suited to be ‘Mamma’ to the child than the distant moon.

So there is arguments like, hads ‘Chanda Mama’ ever visited you? Has ‘Chanda Mama’ ever invited you to his place. He just sits in the sky and creates a fake uproar. Where as we (the three bad men in the film) are with you every day. We play with you, we take care of you and bring you toys. And so, as is wont in Hindi films, all it takes is three minutes of music and song to change the mind of any individual in any situation. Start the song, and you can time the mind conversion almost exactly to 3 minutes (maybe plus a few more seconds).

The video of this song is not available, but it most certainly is picturized on Geeta (role played by Baby Rani) who plays the upset little child, wanting the moon, and the three bad men – Govind, Joseph and Nazir (roles played by Pran, Ajit and Anwar Hussain respectively). The singing voice for the three bad men are back played by Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor and Manhar. The singing voice is not identified for a few lines at the end of the song, which are apparently lip synced by the child.

The film is ‘Nanha Farishta’ from 1969. A film by T Prakash Rao, is a touching tale of three criminals whose lives are transformed by the love a small child girl they have kidnapped. The star cast of this film includes Pran, Ajit, Anwar Hussain, Baby Rani, Padmini, Pandharibai, Balraj Sahni, Johnny Walker, Suresh, Mukri, Raj Mehra, Sunder, Maruti, and Prem Kumar.

The film has four songs, all penned by Sahir Sb. The music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji. Two of the four songs are already showcased on our blog. This is the third song to find its place here, as the centenary celebration of this gifted poet. And we also add the celebration of adding the 700th song by Sahir Sb to our blog.

A very refreshingly joyful song – yes, Sahir Sb had the versatility to pen such gems also.

“Rajput” was released on 16/04/1982. That was 38 years and six months ago. It was produced by Mushir -Riaz and directed by Vijay Anand. It was the story of a minor kingdom in Rajputana and placed during the time of accession to the Indian Union.

The king of that state (played by Murad) kills himself as he is unable to handle the taking of his kingdom by a decree of the Indian Government. His son Jaipal (Ranjeet) refuses to hand over the kingdom to the government and is almost a tyrant king and has a few dacoits under his payroll. In this background Police Superintendent Dhirendra Singh (Rajesh Khanna) assumes duties in that area and at the same time his parents arrange for his marriage with Janki (Hema Malini). He falls in love with her on sight unaware that she is in love with Manu (Dharmendra). On the day of the wedding with Dhirendra, Janaki is abducted by Jaipal’s nephew (Tej Sapru) as the doli is not its way to the sasural. But Manu kills Tej Sapru, rescues Janki and goes to jail to serve term for the murder. Meantime Janki settles into wedded life. Jaipal’s atrocities are directed towards Manu’s family and he has his father killed, his brother Bhanu (Vinod Khanna) turns a baaghi (an option which all oppressed take in most films of that time) as Jaipal has set his evil eye on Bhanu’s sweetheart Kamli (Ranjeeta). So now Bhanu has become Bhawani and Dhirendra Singh is entrusted the task of hunting down all dacoits of the area. He asks Manu (who has been released from prison for good conduct) to help in this mission. He goes out looking for Bhawani Daaku unaware that he is his own brother. During the course of the movie Dhirendra finds out that the child whom Janki has given birth to, is Manu’s. He finds that Jaipal is the biggest dacoit of the region who blackmails the SP (Rajesh Khanna) to handover the case file which he has prepared in exchange of his son whom he has kidnapped. The movie moves towards the climax when all the heroes join forces to bring Jaipal (Ranjeet) and his gang of bandits to the law and avenge all personal scores. In between all this Jaipal’s daughter (Tina Munim) switches over to Bhanu’s side when he shows her her father’s reality.

Very straight forward story, right? This was a movie that took time in reaching the marquee but was reasonably successful. I see this movie whenever it come on television.

Today’s song is the final song. In the movie too it happens just before the climax. It is after Jaya (Tina) learns the truth about her father and the brothers have reunited after Manu (Dharam) discovers that Bhawani is Bhanu (Vinod Khanna). Just before the song Ranjeeta, who is by then the unwed mother of Ranjeet’s child, has joined Bhawani and his team. The song speaks about love for motherland and fighting to overthrow the oppressor.

I would like to state my personal opinion here:- in this post of his Atulji has mentioned that Dharam, Rajesh Khanna and Hema were all towards the end of their careers as lead actors. I beg to differ- Rajesh Khanna’s Souten, Avatar, Amrit etc came after this. As also Hema’s Satte Pe Satta etc were post this. I can agree to your statement about Dharam because in the movies of Dharam, which came after this, we saw him play father-like characters to Govinda, Anil Kapoor, Sunny, Sanjay Dutt etc. But those are my thoughts and I am open to people’s disagreement.

There were comments posted on another song of this movie which said that the mustache didn’t suit the heroes, but they are all entitled to experiment on their looks no? We have heroes, these days, who have lot of facial hair and some even sport extra-long hair.

The purpose of re-visiting this movie is to remember the handsome Vinod Khanna on his 74th birthday today. He was born in Peshawar in 1946, and was raised in Bombay (Mumbai). His first love was cricket, having played the game as a college student. But he soon realized that he couldn’t be a Vishwanath and so pursued his second passion-acting. His career began with “Man Ka Meet” in 1968 as a villain. His next few movies saw him as a supporting actor and/or an antagonist in Rajesh Khanna films of the 70s- “Aan Milo Sajna” for example. He was not averse to playing the second lead too. He appeared in 54 solo hero films and 47 multi-starrers and he was successful in half of each. He had a brief hiatus in the ’80s when he gave up everything to be Acharya Rajneesh’s disciple. He made a comeback in 1984 with “Insaaf”. He was one actor whose sense of rhythm helped him in the song and dance routines which are mandatory in Indian movies. In the last few years of his career we saw him as dad to Salman Khan in “Dabangg” “Wanted” etc. The last movie of VK that I ejoyed was “Ek Rani Aisi Bhi Thi” which saw him play Maharaja Jiwaji Rao Scindia with Hema Malini as his Rani.

‘Amrit’ released on 27th June 1986. It was written, produced and directed by Mohan Kumar (01/06/1934- 10/11/2017) whose wife happened to be the sister-in-law of J Om Prakash, and actor Deepak Parashar happens to be his sister’s son. Mohan Kumar made films under his banner EmKay Films Pvt. Ltd. and began as writer-producer-director with ‘Aas Ka Panchhi’ (1961) which was a Filmyug Presentation.

‘Amrit’ has Smita Patil and Rajesh Khanna play senior citizens whose children ill-treat them after their respective spouses’ death. Amrit played by Rajesh Khanna has a son whose wife makes her father-in-law a male-nanny cum servant in-charge of buying essentials etc. Amrit loves his grandson very much and he in turn is hand-in-glove with the grandpa in eating chocolates and ice creams on the sly. Similarly, Kamla Devi played by Smita Patil has a son, daughter-in-law, daughter-in-law’s brother and a granddaughter for family where she is reduced to being a maid and nanny. Both the seniors come in contact with each other because of the grand kids who happen to be classmates and playmates. The seniors develop a rapport and look after each other when they fall sick and they have a group of sympathizers in the local doodhwala, dhabawala, and a jobless lawyer and his wife (Satish Shah, Birbal, Shafi Inamdar and Aruna Irani). This is unacceptable to their children who take that as an excuse to show the door to their parents. The elders re-locate and Amrit finds a job as a school bus conductor and Kamla devi takes to training ladies in tailoring etc. The grand kids come looking for the grandparents after they grow up and get married. Simple tear-jerker family drama movie.

Today on the occasion of Kaka’s (a.k.a. Rajesh Khanna) death anniversary, let us have a song from ‘Amrit’ which was one of his successful movies in the period after his reign as superstar. We have him minus his characteristic mannerisms in this movie. This movie was Kaka’s next association with Mohan Kumar after the successful ‘Avtaar’.

This song is a Karva Chauth song and Smita Patil is seen breaking her fast with Shashi Puri (guest appearance) playing her husband. Then we see Kaka going into flashback about his wife and their way of celebrating the festival. Zarina Wahab in a guest appearance plays the role of the wife. The song is written by Anand Bakshi to Laxmi-Pyare’s music. Anuradha Paudwal and Manhar Udhas are the playback.

I have seen this movie a few times and I am always amazed at the exact same red colour that both the ladies wear in this song and their accessories. Kamla Devi (Smita Patil) taking pains with accessories is understandable as she is in a better financial position as compared to Savitri (Zarina Wahab) who is the wife of a signalman at Rajpur station. By the time the song ends Savitri also joins in (she seems to have learnt it too). Another thing is both couple sing the same song. Kya baat hai!!!.  How?

Incidentally, Zarina Wahab who made her debut in 1974 in the Dev Anand produced and directed ‘Ishk Ishk Ishk’ celebrated her 61st birthday on 17th July. Here is wishing her belatedly, all happiness and health.

I know of a few people who have two birthdays each year. This can be explained as an adjustment for the sake of getting admission in schools which have a condition that the child should have completed 3½ when getting admitted to pre-school, and/or 5½ when the child starts class one in June. June is the time when the academic sessions begin in India and this rule has been in place for ages. So I have two cases for this in my family – my mother’s birth year was changed to comply with admission requirements.

June 1st is a special date for an Atulite who loves to travel. He has traveled to places which offer a lot of adventure and camping attractions. He has chronicled his travel experiences in www.sadanandsafar.blogspot.com.

It is our Sadanand ji’s birthday, a special birthday today. I shall not mention his age as I know him to be rather young at heart – his travels and treks are a testimony to that.

Currently his journey is discovering songs which we have hitherto not heard, Hindi songs which are from Bengali films. This series has given us some great songs. He has a lot of patience to dig out authentic and accurate information from varied sources like past issues of the magazine ‘Film India’ and other sites. He is painstakingly trying to find links. All the best to him in this – may we get more of the same. Here I will admit that his series has made me look out for songs in south Indian movies and a link that our In-house encyclopedia sent me has started that journey for me. I hope that I am able to sustain myself for as long as Sadanandji who has crossed 600 posts on the blog of which 28 posts were of Hindi songs in Bangla films. That is indeed a lot of rummaging through available online and offline material.

He has one more love – pointed out to me by our Avinash ji, whom I brain-stormed with before I sat to write this post. He loves poetry or shaayari as it is called. Avinash ji drew my attention towards Sadanandji’s love for Gopal Das Neeraj. So today we will have a song penned by Neeraj.

I just realized that I should explain my opening paragraph.

Since morning we have been wishing Sadanand ji through WhatsApp and he graciously thanked everyone but added “Thanks for wishing me on my official birthday. My actual birthday is **/07/****” . So that means we get to wish him one more time – ‘duguna wishes’. I am sure that this change in date of birth may have happened at the point of school admissions, am I right Sadanand ji ? As one of my many acquaintances loves to say – “same case as my mother”.

Now I shall move to the song for which I must thank Avinash ji; he has provided me the lyrics in both English and Devanagari (his forte). He also provided me the link to the audio and video and I realized why he suggested this song from “Gunaah” (1993).

I think I have seen this movie ages ago on television and this movie had Sunny Deol, Dimple Kapadia, Sumeet Saigal, Anjana Mumtaz, Shammi, Manohar Singh, Akash Khurana, Raza Murad, Avtar Gill  etc. It was the story of a young journalist (Sunny Deol) who is found wounded on the shores of Goa, treated by Dr. Joe D’Costa (Manohar Singh). He suffers from amnesia and then remembers details about himself, his life etc after five long years. He recollects that he was instrumental in the downfall of an upright politician and had a girl friend etc. Then the movie makes its way through the usual lanes of finding the real-culprits. The movie was directed by Mahesh Bhatt had songs written by Neeraj and Payam Saeedi (don’t know anything about this person) and Rajesh Roshan was the music director.

Today’s song starts on the seashore, in a Goan village setting with choreographer Ganesh Acharya (don’t know if he was the choreographer for this movie) lip-syncing to Manhar Udhas and we see Manohar Singh urging Sunny Deol to join the fun. I am unable to identify the girl (she looks very familiar) who is lip syncing to Sadhana Sargam.

Wishing Sadanand ji once again a musical day with family and remember your fellow Atulites when you cut the cake. 😉

Welcome all to the today’s post where I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Saudaagar-1991’. This is one of the two movies falling under ‘Blog Ten-Year challenge’ today. Another movie is ‘Sunahri Naagin-1963’.

Only two songs (better strike rate than the current ‘one song per day’😊) were posted on the blog on this day ten years back i.e. on 14.03.2010;

‘Saudaagar-1991’ is one of the many movies that I watched during my stay at Kota. I remember I watched this movie twice during its initial release. Later I have always enjoyed it in ‘parts’ whenever it was on TV channels. The main reason for watching the movie was that it was directed by Subhash Ghai (he was the producer as well) and secondly its ‘music’.
I am big fan of Subhash Ghai , not only for his direction but for the music of his movies as well.

Music has always been a ‘highlight’ of the movies directed by him and also the picturization of the song sequences in his movies which are choreographed in ‘style’.

I still remember watching ‘Ram Lakhan-1989’, ‘Saudaagar-1991’ and ‘Khalnayak-1993’ to packed houses in Kota and the audience breaking into cheers and dancing to the tunes of ‘My name is Lakhan’, ‘Ilu Ilu’, ‘Imli ka boota beri ka ped’, and other songs in ‘Ram Lakhan-1989’ and ‘Saudaagar-1991’.

Also, I cannot forget the ‘mesmerising silence’ watching the ‘artistically choreographed’ ‘Choli ke peechhe kya hai’ and the ‘picturesque beauty’ in the song ‘Paalki mein ho ke sawaar chali re’… from ‘Khalnaayak-1993’.

His collaboration with the music-duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal started with the ‘1979’ movie ‘Gautam Govinda’ and lasted till ‘Khalnayak-1993’.

Today’s song from ‘1991’ movie ‘Saudaagar’ is picturized on the then debutant pair Manisha Koirala and Vivek Mushran. Also present in the picturization of the song is Anupam Kher who played a ‘pivotal’ role in the movie.

The song is sung by Kavita Krishnamurthy, Manhar Udhas and Sukhvinder Singh. Lyrics are by Anand Bakshi and music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
