Today (24 october 2022), which is kaartik maas krishn paksh amaawasya in Panchaang is deepaawali, the festival of lights. Lord Ganesh and Goddess Laxmi are worshipped on this day.
Is there some rule that they should be worshipped only on this date ? Is there some rule that they should even be worshipped consciously ?
I have a feeling that majority of us who celebrate deepaawali on this particular day may have reduced it to a ritual imitating our day to day practices. It has sort of turned into like new year resolutions which cannot last for more than a few days after e make them.
If my earlier posts on the earlier occasions of deepaawali festival, I have discussed it in my own way. I have tried to stress the fact that performing the puja of goddess Laxmi in one day of the year will not make her to bless her. She is more likely to bless us if we perform the “puja” of Goddess Saraswati followed by that of Lord Vishwakarma, and that too in the proper way, not in the ritualistic way. “Puja” of Goddess Saraswati basically means educating ourselves, upgrading our skills, doing cutting edge research etc. All that takes years and in case of high tech skills decades and even centuries.
Once we educate ourselves we have to make use of that education to make goods and provide services of acceptable quality that could be sold to consumers. That is basically performing Vishwakarma puja. Based on quality of Saraswati Puja, our quality of Vishwakarma Puja is decided and that decides the degree of blessing from Goddess Laxmi.
To take a simplistic example, if our quality of education and skill is such that we can only manufacture low tech products like say garments, then Godess Laxmi will at the most bless us nominally and we will stay an LDC (least developed nation) or low income group nation. If our skill is of medium level (like say we are able to manufacture and export engineering goods) then we can beome a middle income group country. If our skill sets are such that we can develop cutting edge technology and sell that to rest of the world then we becaome High income group nation. That is when Goddess Laxmi actually starts to bless us abundantly.
Right now, India is a low ncome group nation with a per capita income of just over $ 2000 per annum. We will graduate to a middle income nation when our per capita income crosses $ 4000. It is easier said that done. Our neighbour Sri Lanka continues to hover around this mark and has failed to graduate to the ranks of Middle income group nation because they have failed to upgrade their skills to the level where they could break into the league of middle income group nations.
Likewise there are nations that are perpetually in middle income group ($ 4000 to $ 12000 per capita) but they have failed to break into the league of high income nations (per capita earning of over $ 12000) because that requires a different level of education, skill set and aptitude. This phenomenon is called middle income trap. Countries like Brazil and Argentina have fallen into this middle income trap.
High income group nations are those that have per capita income of above $ 12000. These counries are there because of their stress of high quality education and training, followed by strong manufaturing and services sector.
To cut a long story short, we still have a long long way to go before we can hope to be blessed by Goddess Laxmi adequately. We will hopefully becaome a middle income nation (per capita income of above $ 4000) by end of this decade and will not look back. Becoming a high income nation with a per capita income of above $ 12000 at current prices will take another two decades, depending on the level of education and skills that we are able to achieve for our masses. Hopefully we will reach there three decades from now. But that will not happen if we continue to carry on with our present habits. It is high time we stopped looking at education to be synonymous with acquiring degrees and government jobs. It is high time we shift the gear of our thinking. For long we are moving in second gear, whereas you need to shift to top gear if we have to race on the highway of progress.
I find it strange that the number of Deepaawali related songs in Hindi movies dwindled drastically after the golden era of HFM was over in 1980s.
“Pyaar Kiya Hai Pyaar Karenge”(1986) is one of the exceptions. It was produced by Suresh Bokadia and K C Bokadia and directed by Vijay Reddy for BMB Combines, Madras. The movie, which was a remake of Kannada Hit popular movie “NAA NINNA MAREYALARE”(Translation of Title “I will not forget you”) starring famous Kannada hero Late Dr.Raj Kumar, Julie Lakshmi, Shubha, Leelavathi etc.
The movie “Pyaar Kiya Hai Pyaar Karenge”(1986) had Anil Kapoor, Anita Raj, Padmini Kolhapure,Ashok Kumar, Sushma Seth,Deepak Parashar(in Special appearance),
Ramesh Deo, Seema Deo,Baby Guddoo, Satyen Kapoo,Naval Kishore,Bharat Bhatt etc in it.
The movie had six songs in it. Here is the first song from the movie to appear in the blog.
The song is sung by Mohammad Aziz. S H Bihari is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
The song is picturised on Anil Kapoor, Baby Guddu and Anita Raj.
Lyrics and other details were sent to me by Prakashchandra.
The movie “Pyaar Kiya Hai Pyaar Karenge”(1986) makes its debut with the song.
I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy, prosperous and safe Deepaawali. May Goddess Laxmi bless us all in a more fruitful manner than the blessing that most of us are used to from her.

Hullo Atuldom
This post by Avinashji reminded me of today’s song.
“Naam” (1986) had a cast headed by Nutan, Poonam Dhillon, Amrita Singh, Kumar Gaurav and Sanjay Dutt along with a few familiar faces forming the supporting cast. Pankaj Udhas had a guest appearance in the iconic song “Chitthi aayi hai aayi hai chitthi aayi hai“.
Avinashji’s post gives the technical details, censor certificate date, and the complete star cast. All the trivia that I had in mind before commencing this post viz: how the cast of “Mother India” became related post the marriage of Kumar Gaurav (Rajendra Kumar’s son) to Namrata Dutt (daughter of Nargis and Sunil Dutt). Atulji’s post for Chitthi aayi hai aayi hai chitthi aayi hai also mentions how the movie was meant to help Kumar Gaurav’s career but Sanjay Dutt benefited from the movie.
The basic story of the movie was- Nutan is the mother of Ravi (Kumar Gaurav) and Vicky (Sanjay Dutt). Both the sons love each other immensely and but are contrasting characters. Ravi is the more responsible and straight-forward of the two and is forever helping Vicky out of tricky situations. Vicky decides to go to Dubai to earn enough to keep his brother and mother happy and bring the family out of financial problems. Ravi helps him with the documents needed to go to Dubai but unfortunately Vicky finds himself in all kinds of problems on landing in Dubai- fraud visa, entangling with a ruthless underworld led by Rana (Paresh Rawal) etc. The story shifts to Malaysia, as Vicky is sent on an errand by Rana and Ravi ends up following Vicky there to try and bail him out of the mess. But only ends up loosing his beloved brother and bringing back his pregnant widow (Amrita Singh) to India.
Today’s emotional song is sung by Mohammad Aziz and Manhar Udhas. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and Laxmi-Pyare the music directors. This song may not have been popular in its time but deserved to be. THe song has both the brothers getting drunk at the farewell that Ravi has arranged for Vicky.
Let us wish Sanju Baba a very Happy Birthday and lots of health and happiness with this post. I recall having read a news, same time last year, that he was undergoing treatment for lung cancer. Hope he is fit and fine and will be back to what he does best- entertain his fans.

“Ghar Ka Chiraag” is a title that has been used twice in Bollywood- in 1967 and 1989. The 1967 film had a cast of Dharmendra, Waheeda Rehman, Balraj Sahni, Indrani Mukherjee, Dev Kumar, Biswajeet etc and had music by Madan Mohan for songs written by Kaifi Azmi. This was directed and produced by Jagdev Bhambri.
The 1989 film had Rajesh Khanna leading a cast of Neelam, Chunky Pandey, Om Shivpuri, Shafi Inamdaar, Navin Nischol and Dipika Chikhalia in a special appearance. It had music by Bappi Lahiri and Anjaan was the lyricist. This one was directed by Sikander Bharti and produced by Rajeev Kumar Choudhry.
The content in both the films seem to be different going by the synopsis available on the internet. But I know for a fact that “Ghar Ka Chiraag” (1989) was majorly inspired by the 1969 Balraj Sahni- Sadhana- Sanjay Khan starrer “Ek Phool Do Mail”. This statement of mine is sufficient to give the followers an idea about the movie, correct? Of course, there were minor differences in the story. In “Ek Phool Do Mali” (EPDM) Sadhana becomes an unwed mother because she is molested, whereas “Ghar Ka Chiraag” (GKC) had Neelam getting pregnant with Chunky Pandey’s child. In EPDM Sanjay was a mountaineer and GKC had Chunky as a racing enthusiast. Rest of the story was same in both the movies. And both movies had melodious songs.
GKC had eight songs with two songs having happy and sad versions. “Tutak tutak tutak tutiya” was very popular when the movie had released and I think it was inspired by some Punjabi folk song; this one had two versions. Another song ‘yeh kismat hai kya, jaanta hai wahi’ also had two versions. The happy version is when Kumar (Rajesh Khanna) is celebrating his happiness with wife (Deepika) and friends. We see that this song is echoing the thoughts that Dilip Kumar and Shammi Kapoor had put forth in this song.
In the second version we have Rajesh Khanna singing out his life experiences, and says ‘ek thokar lagi, toota sara nasha’.
Bappi Lahiri used Mohammad Aziz, Amit Kumar and Sapna Mukherjee (youtube is crediting Alka Yagnik for this song, need confirmation) for this song and Alisha Chinai and Amit Kumar for ‘Tutak tutak tutiya’. Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik and Sarika Kapoor (another new name, for me at least) were the other playback singers.
Mohammad Aziz who sang the sad version of today’s song would have celebrated his 67th birthday on July 2nd. He was born in Kolkatta. He sang, primarily, in Hindi, Bengali and Odia films plus some Sufi devotional songs and also various genres in 10 other languages. He was also credited as Munna in some movies. ‘Mard’ by Anu Malik was his breakthrough though the 1984 movie ‘Amber’ with music by Sapan-Jagmohan was his debut in Bollywood. He has sung alongside all the prominent singers of the ’80s and ’90s with music composed by RD Burman, Laxmi-Pyare, Ravindra Jain, Raamlaxman etc; even OP Nayyar and Naushad.
Amit Kumar who has sung the duet with Sapna Mukherjee (or it could be Alka Yagnik, as per the tagging on youtube) celebrates his birthday on July 3rd turns 69!!!!! Is it so!!!!! Unbelieveable!!!! Cannot think of some people as aging, right no 🙂
We have enough fans of Amit Kumar on this blog and everyone knows his history, lineage etc. His last film appearance was in the 1989 release ‘Mamta Ki Chhaon’ which was a movie left incomplete by Kishore Kumar-his father. He had acted in many movies made by his father beginning with “Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein” in 1964. He won the Filmfare award for best singer in 1982 for the 1981 release “Love Story”.
Here is remembering Munna a.k.a Mohammad Aziz on his birth anniversary and Wishing Amit Kumar many more Happy Returns. May he continue to entertain us. He is launching a special RD Burman tribute on his birth-date on his YouTube channel… looking forward to it

aadmi kismat se kya
lad paayega bolo yahaan
darr ke kismat se ruka hai
iss zameen pe aasmaan
ye kismat hai kya jaante hain wahi
zamaane mein hai jinki kismat buri
ye kismat hai kya jaante hain wahi
zamaane mein hain jinki kismat buri
hooo ooooo
ooooo
ye kismat hai kya kisne dekha yahaan
ye kismat hai kya kisne dekha yahaan
apni kismat banaata hai khud aadmi
ye kismat hai kya jaante hai wahi
zamaane mein hain jinki kismat buri
ye kismat hai kya kisne dekha yahaan
apni kismat banaata hai khud aadmi
jitne oonche ho insaan ke hausle
utne oonche mahal uske kadmon taley
ho jitne oonche ho insaan ke housle
utne unche mahal uske kadmon taley
jinki mehenat ke dam se mahal hai khade
unko rehne ko milte hai kyon jhonpde
unki mehenat main ye akal shaamil na thhi
apni kismat banaata hai khud aadmi
ye kismat hai kya jaante hain wahi
zamaane mein hai jinki kismat buri
laakh mehnat se seenche koi gulsitaan
baag mein gul khila na sake baaghbaan
laakh mehnat se seenche koi gulsitaan
baag mein gul khila na sake baaghbaan
uski mehenat mein hogi kahi kuchh kami
warna kya hai jo kar na sake aadmi
aadmi khud ko insaan bana na saka
apni kismat banaayega kya aadmi
ye kismat hai kya kisne dekha yahaan
apni kismat banaata hai khud aadmi
hai donon ke dam pe ye duniya khadi
ye kismat hai kya jaante hain khadi
zamaane mein hain jinki kismat buri
ye kismat hai kya kisne dekha yahaan
apni kismat banaata hai khud aadmi

har dua ek baddua

pal mein yahaan
bewafa kismat bhi,

zamaane mein hai jiski kismat buri
aadmi khud ko insaan bana na saka
apni kismat banayega kya aadmi
ye kismat hai kya jaanta hai wahi
zamaane mein hai jinki kismat buri
ye kismat hai karti ajab faisle
yahaan milke sab kuchh
bhi kuchh na miley
bhatakti hai yoon dar-badar zindagi
ke marke bhi insaan mar na sakey
ye kismat hai kya jaanta hai wahi
zamaane mein hai jiski kismat buri
ek thhokar lagi toota saara nasha
ab hai jaanaa kahaan kuchh nahin hai pata
laake kismat ne chhoda hai kis mod par
jo musaafir thha khud ban gaya raasta
ye kismat hai kya jaanta hai wahi

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Naam-1986’.
‘Naam-1986’ may be a recent movie by the standard of this blog, but it made it’s debut on the blog long time back or precisely in the initial months of the blog and that was on 03.11.2008.
Its’ most popular song Chitthi aayi hai aayi hai chitthi aayi hai was posted on the blog on 03.11.2008.
‘Naam-1986’ was directed by Mahesh Bhatt for ‘Aryan Films’.
It was produced by Kumar Gaurav and presented by Rajendra Kumar. It had Nutan, Kumar Gaurav, Sanjay Dutt, Poonam Dhillon, Amrita Singh, Pankaj Udhas with Paresh Rawal, Aakash Khurana, Ram Mohan etc in it.

Lata Mangeshkar, Pankaj Udhas, Manhar Udhas, Mohammed Aziz and Kavita Krishnamurthy had given their voices to the songs of this movie.
Today we are going to listen the second song from this movie sung by Mohammed Aziz and lip-synced on screen by Kumar Gaurav.
I had watched this movie during my stay at Parli Vaijnath then in 1986. Though I do not remember much about this movie now. The today’s song seems to be a party song where paintings of ‘people suffering in poverty and hunger’ are seen to be displayed.
We can see Poonam Dhillon and others present their while Kumar Gaurav performs on this song.
I think all the songs from this movie are good songs to listen and they were all quite popular too, ‘chitthi aayi hai’ being the most popular among them.
Let us now listen to today’s song, the second song of this movie on the blog, appearing after a gap of twelve years, five months, and fifteen days (or 4550 days including 17.04.2021) since its first song on the blog.

Today (2 july 2020) is the 66th birth anniversary of Sayeed Mohammed Aziz-un-Nabi, better known as singer Mohammed Aziz (2 July 1954 – 27 November 2018).
I was under the impression that he made his debut as a playback singer in 1970s. I was mistaking him with Anwar, who began his career in 1970s. Mohammad Aziz made his debut as a playback singer in HFM in 1984. He shot to fame with “Main mard taange waala”, the title song of “Mard”(1985). He then sung some other memorable songs. One of them being “Mai se meena se na saaqi se”.
On the occasion of his birth anniversary, here is a song from “Aakhir Kyon”(1985). This song is sung by Md Aziz. Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.
The song gets played on a radio / two in one while Rajesh Khanna and Smita Patil, playing an estranged couple, look on.
The lyrics of the song are quite inspirational. The lyrics makes this song a forgotten gem.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

jitney kaanten phool bhi utne
daaman mein khud aa jaayenge
jinki taraf tu haath pasaaare
ek andheraa laakh sitaare ae
beete huye kal ki khaatir tu
aanewaala kal mat khona
beete hue kal ki khaatir tu
aanewaala kal mat khona
jaane kaun kahaan se aakar
raahen teri phir se sanwaaare ae
ek andheraa laakh sitaare ae
dukh se agar pehchaan na ho to
kaisaa sukh aur kaisi khushiyaan
dukh se agar pehchaan na ho to
kaisaa sukh aur kaisi khushiyaan
toofaanon se lad kar hi to
lagte hain saahil kitne pyaaare ae
ek andheraa laakh sitaaare
ek niraasha laakh sahaaare
sabse badi saugaat hai jeewan
naadaan hain jo jeewan se haare ae
ek andheraa laakh sitaare ae ae ae

Hullo Atuldom
Ideally this post should have come last year, when this veteran of about a few hundred movies, turned 80. But then that has not happened.
I have decided that we shall not let the occasion go unnoticed. And in south India, the celebration for a person turning 80 is normally on completing 81, as the system of calculating the auspicious date to celebrate says that the person should have witnessed a 1000 full moons in his life, with the life being said to have started after the 1st birthday. Etc. Etc. Etc.
Whatever be the logic, the celebration called “Sadabhishekam” is after the person crosses 81 and our celebrity is turning 81 today. So here we are wishing this veteran a Happy 81st birthday.
He was born Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri on 29th March 1939 in Amritsar. He made his first screen appearance at the young age of 11 or 12. B.R.Chopra’s “Afsana” was the starting point followed by “Ab Dilli Door Nahin”, “Hum Panchi ek Daal ke”, “Do Bigha Zameen”, “Aar Paar” etc. AVM’s “Bhabhi” saw him in his first role of a grownup. And then there was no looking back and we have seen him in movies till 2017- a really long career. He played a leading man in a few movies before finding his comic timing in “Brahmachari”.
He has had many famous songs filmed on him -“Paas baitho tabiyat bahal jayegi”, “In pyar ki raahon mein”, we have seen him shaking a leg when Shamshad Begum sang, for Kumkum’s debut in movies, “kabhi aar kabhi paar”. This post introduces us to the person whose 81st birthday it is today.
Yes we are wishing “Soorma Bhopali” of Sholay a.k.a father of Jaaved and Naaved Jaafri of ‘Booogie Boogie’ fame. Simply put we are celebrating comedian Jagdeep’s birthday.
He may have done around 100 movies prior to “Sholay” but when Salim-Javed wrote the character of ‘Soorma Bhopali’ it changed Jagdeep’s fortunes forever. He was seen in many movies after “Sholay” too but very few remember him as the sidekick of Gopi (Mithun Chakravarty) ‘Kabari” in Surakksha”” (1979); ‘Chandu alias James Bond’ in the 1977 release “Agent Vinod”; he had a tiny-blink-n-miss role in Feroz Khan’s “Qurbani”. Jagdeep was forever requested to reappraise his Soorma Bhopali, atleast once, in many subsequent movies. He himself wrote and directed a movie with the title “Soorma Bhopali” in 1988. I don’t know much about that movie other than the fact that it had a whole lot of Jagdeep’s co-actors from “Sholay” making guest and special appearances in that movie. IMDB.com gives the list of actors as Agha, Amitabh Bachchan, Master Bhagwan, Birbal, Brahmachari, Danny, Dharmendra; Aruna Irani appears to be the sole female in the starcast.
I have chosen a song from this 1988 movie to accompany this post. The music directors were Dilip Sen- Sameer Sen and songs were written by Asad Bhopali, Jaan Nissar Akhtar and Jagdeep himself has written a song. It was a difficult task selecting a song from this movie as Jagdeep has also sung a few songs in the movie. But I finally decided that we will have a song that accompanies the movie’s credits that is what I have deduced from the available clip. This song is sung by Mohd Aziz and Jagdeep and Asad Bhopali is the lyricist. As I was writing the lyrics I caught the names of lot more actors than those that I have mentioned who were common to Sholay and this movie.
Here is wishing our very own Soorma Bhopali, who had a one-liner to his character in Sholay that said “Soorma Bhopali aise nahin hai”, A very Healthy and happy Birthday.

Lyrics
assalaam vaalekkum
aadaab arz hai
namaste
aao hanste hanste
aur jaao hanste hanste
paan khaalo
aur issi baat pe bajaao taali
ke main hoon soorma bhopali
arre haan soorma bhopali
ke main hoon soorma bhopali
miyaan haan soorma bhopali
main na rahoon Bhopal mein
toh sheher lage hai khaali ee ee
main hoon soorma bhopali
miyaan haan soorma bhopali
yeh mera bhopal hai
jo pyaar se maalaamaal hai
bairagadh se T T Nagar tak
jo hai yahaan khush-haal hai
moti masjid jaama masjid
Taj ul Masjid dekh kar
jo bhi dekhe birla mandir
chamak uthhe hai uski nazar
kamlapati raani ka mahal hai
beech mein donon taalon ke
jaise meri naak hai pyaare
beech mein donon gaalon ke
meri chaal anokhi sabse
meri chaal anokhi sabse
meri ada hai niraali ee ee
main hoon soorma bhopali
miyaan haan soorma bhopali
meri cycle meri dulhan hai
isko saja ke rakhta hoon
ise akela jab bhi chhodoon
taala laga ke rakhta hoon
logon meri soorat pe na jaao
dil hai mera aaine jaisa
mujhse meri ammi ne kahaa thha
beta haath ka mail hai paisa
paise ki parwaah na karna
bhale kaam mein rehna aage
uske karam par rakhna bharosa
woh jab chaahe kismat jaage
ooparwaala
ooparwaala kadam kadam par
kare teri rakhwaali ee ee
main hoon soorma bhopali
arre haan soorma bhopali
main na rahoon bhopal mein
toh sheher lage hai khaali ee ee
main hoon soorma bhopali
miyaan haan soorma bhopali
main hoon soorma bhopali
miyaan haan soorma bhopali
