16/10/2020 – 72nd Birthday of Hema Malini
————————————————————-
So the dream girl is turning 7 & 2, 72. This same way we should make 2 & 2, 22. Right ? wrong, imdb is making “two and two make five”, in simple translation of the movie “Do aur do paanch”(1980). They have “Athiest” for “Nastik”, “The patriot” for “Deshpremi” and “Blind law” for ‘Andha Kanoon”. This is great going. But they go a step ahead and translate “Naseeb” as “Destiny and Fate”, whereas “Dard” is “Conflict of emotion”. I learnt today that ‘Trishul” is “Trident” and “Kasauti” is “Criterion” in English. Many of the 173 films listed in the filmography have been left alone, to dwell in their hindi/urdu quagmire. Some titles like ‘Shareef Badmash” ‘Sharafat” ‘Sholay” ‘Sachhe ka bolbalaa”, “ Ek chadar maili si”,”Jise tu qubool kar le” and ‘Maan Gaye ustaad” have been wisely given a wide berth.

But they can’t stop from falling into “Seven on seven” for “Satte pe satta”. And they failed to translate “Dharmatma” into “The Godfather” ?. They could have done worse and translated “Raziya Sultan” to “Emperor of Contentment”. I did tell Peevesie’s mom the other day, this translating of movie names business is a good exercise for the brain.

Let us go to the song and birthday girl now. The Wikpedia page on Hema Malini is here and is quite exhaustive. If I have to say something from my own “two paisa worth” opinion, Hema Malini was one courageous female artist, who being a public personality, chose to be Dharmendra’s second wife, rejecting other eligible bachelors such as Sanjeev Kumar and Jeetendra. About Dharmendra’s commitment, there is very filmy dialogue “ekbaar main ne commitment kar li, to phir main apne aap ki bhi nahi suntaa”. Bigger men and personalities have been found to have feet of clay, in similar situations.

The song I have chosen to present today is a much heard and seen song in “Chaayageet”. It was lying buried in the memory and as soon as I saw the title of the song it came back that it is a song where HemaMalini is playing “hide n seek” with kids in the garden. The kids in question are, Master Chintu, Master Raju, Master Alankar, Master Laddu, Padmini Kolhapure, Madhu Malini, Master chicoo, Bunty, Bobby etc. all child artist. The list is sourced from two different sources, so could be inaccurate. There is sad version also of the song, where these kids are singing and searching for Hema Malini.

This is the brief story line of the film, which stars, Ashok Kumar, Dharmendra, Asrani, Prem Chopra etc.:

Sapna, who works under a number of aliases, is a modern day female Robin Hood, who steals from whoever she can, so that she can maintain a home for orphans. One day she meets with wealthy and eligible bachelor, AnupamVerma, and poses as a wealthy princess. He takes her to meet his grandparents, and even lets her live in his palatial bunglow. But soon Sapna’s past catches up with her, when she is recognized as Champabai, a prostitute.

The creative team is the prolific Laxmikant-Pyarelal-AnandBakshi, with Lata Mangeshkar singing both versions with few un-credited kids voices and chorus.

Blog Day:

4355 Post No. : 15674

Hello everyone,

So after what seems like ages, I’m back here with a post.
You can therefore assume it must be a special occasion.
A special anniversary, of an artiste or celebrity.

And it is.

Today is the birthday of the most important celebrity for this blog.
In fact, without this celebrity, the blog would not even have existed.
Yes, I’m talking about Atul himself.

Wish you a very very happy birthday, Atul.
Many happy returns of the day!

Now Atul might not consider himself a celebrity – but for us, he very much is.
I checked the dictionary definition of “celebrity” and there are two definitions
“a famous person, especially in entertainment or sport”
“the state of being well known”.

Atul satisfies BOTH conditions, in the context of this blog.
Ok, so he might not be a celeb in Bollywood yet, he might not make it to Page 3 or gossip columns (or maybe he does, I don’t know!). But if the dictionary definition is satisfied, I am too. 🙂

I don’t know where to start writing from, but I think a journey down memory lane might not be such a bad place to start. Those of you who have heard this before, kindly bear with me.

It all started in the first half of 2005. Probably around April or so.

In those days I was in Holland, and pretty crazy about cricket.
Not the right sport for that country, or the right country for that sport. 🙂
I got no TV coverage of cricket – and I was desperate to discuss cricket with like-minded cricket fans.

Luckily I had internet – so that was a life-saver in this context.

BBC in those days had a forum called BBC  TMS where one could discuss cricket. It was mostly Indians and Pakistanis, so you can imagine the level of discussion and amount of abuse. 🙂 Much of it was deliberately in Hindi, to avoid catching the eye of the forum moderators.

But after a while, they caught on to what was going on – and eventually the forum was shut down.

I then began hunting for other options.
I came across a Pakistani cricket forum which I joined.

It was there that I came across a person who went by the handle of “squarecut” (I think).

Now most of the discussion on the forum was obviously of modern/current cricket (Tendulkar, Wasim Akram etc) but this handle posted on topics of an earlier era – mostly the 1970s. And mostly talking about Indian cricketers of that era – like Vishwanath.

I could immediately relate to this. This was MY era, and I loved to discuss cricket of that era. So I immediately warmed to this person.

What was most remarkable was that his experiences were very similar to mine.
And his posts were also very interesting.

After a while, I got bored of that forum and continued my search for other options.

I came across a new forum, started by a few Indians in the wake of the BBC TMS shutdown.

I was initially a bit unsure of it, but then I saw a familiar handle.
The same “squarecut”.

So I joined that forum.
And for many years, Atul and I (and many other friends we made on that forum) spent many wonderful moments discussing cricket, and a lot of non-cricketing stuff, on that forum.

Anyway, long story – of How I Met Atul.
(Someone needs to make a Netflix series on this. :-))

Continuing (Season-2 of HIMA), the best thing about the forum was that though it was primarily a cricket forum, we could, and would, discuss anything under the sun.

Politics, movies, music, culture, anything.
And since there were people from around the world, it was quite interesting.

It didn’t take long for me to discover that Atul was keen on Hindi songs too.
Bas, phir kya tha?

We set up a section on the forum to discuss just this.
We called it Geetmala, where each person would pick up a topic (Atul picked up “trains” – anyone surprised?) and post 10 or so songs on it.

One day Atul announced that he had just started a blog.
He has always been someone who likes to experiment with things, so this was a sort of experiment for him too.
For nostalgia sake, I checked just now and found that blog still very much intact – it is on the blogroll of this blog.

One of the posts is http://squarecutsblog.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html .
Dated 1st June 2008.

Having now got some blogging experience, Atul decided to start a new blog where he would discuss one song a day.

And thus, on the 19th  of July 2008, a first post on this “one song a day” blog appeared.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

I’m sorry for this rather elaborate throwback to another era, but since it is Atul’s birthday today, I couldn’t help reminiscing how we first got to know each other.

And oh, we did manage to meet once too.

When Atul was posted in Nagpur, I made a trip to Nagpur to meet him and a common friend (from the cricket forum). My only trip to Nagpur ever.

It was wonderful meeting Atul, and having dinner with him.
We discussed cricket of the 70s, songs and of course this blog.

There are other memories too.
Atul and his special relationship with Bangladesh cricket, for example. 🙂

No mention of Atul would be complete without talking about Atulisms. 🙂

This is a term I coined to refer to Atul’s unique one-liners.

For example, on his first blog referred to above, in an August 2008 piece, he says “Knowing fully well that Indian authorities are not likely to exert themselves in such strenuous tasks like thinking, planning, etc, I have done all the hard work for them.” 🙂

I can go on and on, but I think readers might already be impatient about the length of this post.

So I’m going to go straight to the song now.

As usual, I owe this song to Avinashji. He was in fact the person who requested me to write a post for this occasion, and gave me a choice of a few songs to pick from.

I picked this one – Avinashji has provided the lyrics.

It is a multiple version song from the film ‘Jeevan Rekha’ (1974).

Some more details about the film, provided to me by Avinashji.

“Jeewan Rekhaa-1974” was directed by Nanabhai Bhatt for ‘Nanak Films, Bombay’. It has Pran, Farida Jalal, Tabrez, Jalal Agha, Keshto Mukherjee, Chandrashekhar, Asit Sen, Aparna Choudhari, Vikrant, Jagdish Raj, Ravish Dhillon, Shetty, K.N.Singh, Ajit, Raj Rani, Rajni Bala, Pravin Pal, Polson, Ramlal, Sudarshan Sharma, Kirti Kumar, Kamaldeep, Dev Sharma, Surendra Kohli, Thakur Chhabra, Vikas Bali, Ashok Seth, Prince Shakil, Sagar, Rashid Khan, Master Vijay and others. Manmohan and Fariyal make special appearance in this movie.

This movie has as many as seven songs (including one multiple version song being presented today).
Three lyricist Dev Kohli (four songs), Anjaan (two songs) and Kafil Azar (one song) wrote the lyrics for this movie.
Music was composed by two music directors Suman Raj – three songs and Jagdish J- four songs.

Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey, Mukesh and Chandrani Mukherjee had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 19.07.1974.

Male version of this song is sung by Manna Dey, the female version by Chandrani Mukherjee.

I vaguely seem to remember a film by this name, but I don’t recall hearing this song before.

When Avinashji sent me the video(s) and I listened to the song, I instantly fell in love with it.

It’s a cheerful and positive song – and I think quite fitting for this occasion – “Geet Hai Ye Zindagi, Gungunaate Aur Gaate Chale Chalo, Chale Chalo”.

Doesn’t this just describe what Atul has been doing with this blog? It seems just perfect for Atul on his birthday. 🙂

So once again, wish you a very happy birthday, Atul. I hope you like this choice of song.

Just want to mention that the composer Jagdish is a totally new name for me. If anyone knows more about him, kindly enlighten me.

And Atul, if I’ve got any facts wrong in this post (my memory isn’t very good) , please let me know. 🙂

Blog Day :

4340 Post No. : 15641

Sai Paranjpye has so far directed 8 feature films in Hindi. She has written story and script for all these films. Each of these films has some interesting background as to what prompted her to make those films. In this article, I am covering her film ‘Saaz’ (1997) which was produced by Amit Khanna under the banner ‘Pulse Films’ of the Plus Channel of which he was the managing director during 1989-2000.

Sometime in 1995-96, Plus Channel decided to produce some ‘middle-of-the-road’ films. Directors like Shyam Bengal, Basu Chatterjee, Sudhir Mishra, Aruna Raje, Gautam Ghosh and Sai Paranjpye were enlisted to direct  such genre of films which resulted in the release of films, ‘Sardari Begum’ (1996), ‘Gudgudee’ (1997), ‘Is Raat Ki Subah Nahi’ (1996), ‘Bhairavi’ (1996), ‘Gudia’ (1997) and ‘Saaz’ (1997), respectively.

Shabana Azmi had worked with Sai Paranjpye in ‘Sparsh’ (1980) and ‘Disha’ (1990). As per Sai Paranjpye’s Marathi book, ‘Sai – Maaza Kalapravaas’ (2016), one day Shabana came to her with a proposal on behalf of Plus Channel to direct a film with a woman-oriented story in which she would like to work. Sai Paranjpye accepted the proposal. The subject of sibling rivalry in the professional fields had attracted Sai Paranjpye but she had not thought of making a film on the subject. With this proposal, she thought as to why not make a film on sibling rivalry.

We are aware that there have been many instances of sibling rivalries – be in epics, history, business, media, industrial houses etc in India where there was thin line of difference between the professional and personal rivalries. According to Sai Paranjapye, sibling rivalry of Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle is unique in the sense that their personal relationship by and large has remained intact over the years in the midst of their professional rivalry. And Sai Paranjpye wanted to bring this uniqueness in the film.

When Sai Paranjpye worked on the script of the film, she realised that the film was leaning towards making of a biopic on Asha Bhosle. She felt uncomfortable to make a film on such a script involving the personal lives of the siblings. Furthermore, she has no acquaintance with both the sisters.  The idea of making a film depicting Asha Bhosle was, therefore, dropped. However, in the revised script, the main theme of two playback singing sisters were kept in mind with some twists in the stories just to segregate her story from the real life story of Lata and Asha Bhosle. However, a couple of events which actually happened during the lives of  Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar were incorporated as they were in the public domain, written by those who had witness those events.

The star cast of ‘Saaz’ (1997) included Shabana Azmi, Aruna Irani, Parikshit Sahani, Raghuveer Yadav, Ayesha Dharker, Zakir Hussain, Amar Talwar, Brijbhushan Sahani, Bhupen Hazarika etc. The story, script and dialogues were written by Sai Paranjpye who also directed the film. The film was mostly shot around Mumbai. Some last part of the film were shot in Seychelles.

The film was certified by the Censor Board on 31-12-1996. But film failed to get release in theaters. The reason is stated to be the ban put by the Theater Owners Association on the exhibition of films produced by Plus Films due to the non-payment of arrears of rent from Plus Channel to some theater owners. I am not aware whether the film was released in the theater after this ban. Probably, the film got released later on TV.  It was only after reading some parts of the script of the film published verbatim in Sai Paranjpye’s Marathi book referred to above that made me to watch the film. I am pleasantly surprised to note that she has handled the theme of sibling rivalry of playback singing sisters very delicately and objectively. There are some poignant moments between the two sisters which are very heart-touching.

The film’s story has been told in a flash-back mode during Bansi’s (Shabana Azmi)’s sessions with a psychiatrist played by Parikshit Sahani. She needed this treatment as she has lost the will to sing after the death of Hemang Desai (Zakir Hussain) with whom she was in love and would have married him. In all her sessions, Bansi reveals events from her childhood to playback singing career as to how she was always played second fiddle to her elder sister. How she broke the relationship with her didi for 10 years due to snatching of her chance to sing on India’s Independence Day at Delhi. But after the sudden death of her elder sister, Bansi feels guilty of depriving  her elder sister of spending time with her daughter.  Towards the end of the film, Bansi gets a good news that her daughter has won the award as a promising playback singer. This pleasant news makes Bansi to sing live in front of the audience in Seychelles. The tape of her singing is sent to psychiatrist who comes at the airport to receive her and announces that she does not need any more treatment. So his relationship with Bansi as a doctor and a patient is over. Instead, he wants now to be her friend. The films end with both them walking together out of the airport.

In my view, this film is not one of the best among the films Sai Paranjpye has directed. Probably, in trying to make the film different from that of the sibling rivalry of Lata and Asha Bhosle, too many characters were introduced. As a result, about last one hour of film does appear some disconnect from the first part of the film which has some brilliant stamp of Sai Paranjpye. However, I feel that she has succeeded in creating sympathy of the audience for the younger sister without their malice towards the elder one.

In keeping with the subject of the story, ‘Saaz’ (1997) has as many as 11 songs (including a multiple version song). Songs are written by Javed Akhtar which have been set to music by 4 music directors – Ustad Zakir Hussain, Bhupen Hazarika, Raj Kamal and Yashwant Deo. The reason given by Sai Paranjpye for multiple music directors is that since sisters are playback singers working with different music directors, the songs in the film should reflect the different style of music direction. Two of the music directors, Ustad Zakir Hussain and Bhupen Hazarika also acted as music directors in the film.

Out of the 11 songs of the film, 3 songs have been covered in the Blog, all by Peevesie’s Mom. I am presenting the 4th song from the film which is a multiple version song. The song is “Baadal Ghumad Badh Aaye”. The male version of the song is sung by Suresh Wadkar and Kavita Krishnamurthy sings the female version. Both the versions of the song are set to music by Yashwant Deo in Raag Megh-Malhar. In the credit titles of the film, only Javed Akhtar’s name appears as a lyricist. But in reality, both the versions of the song have been written by Sai Paranjpye. There is an anecdote as to why Sai Paranjpye had to write the lyrics of the song as revealed by her in her Marathi book referred to above.

Javed Akhtar has written all the songs except the one under discussion which was last to be written. Despite repeated reminder, Javed Akhtar could not write the song. Yashwant Deo who was to set the song to music had booked the recording room and taken the dates of Suresh Wadkar and Kavita Krishnamurthy. All the musicians were also booked for the date of recording. Now only two days had left for the recording of the song but both the version of song’s lyrics was not yet ready. Just one day before the song recording date, it came to light that Javed Akhtar has gone to Khandala with a film producer. The cancellation of recording of the song would have entailed a huge loss and also the shooting schedules would have been affected entailing further loss.

Yashwant Deo mentioned to Sai Paranjpye that even if he gets the song in the morning of the song recording date, he can manage somehow to complete the rehearsals and record the song at the appointed time at noon. Sai Paranjpye came home at night and completed the lyrics of two versions of the song, foregoing her sleep. In the morning, she handed over the lyrics to Yashwant Deo and recording of the songs took place as schedule.

On return from Khandala on the next day, Javed Akhtar was shocked to learn that the songs have already been recorded. He got annoyed on Sai Paranjpye.  After 3-4 days, an executive from Plus Films came to her asking for her lyrics which Javed Akhtar wanted to read. He took lyrics to Javed Akhtar. There was no further development which meant that Javed Akhtar had no issue with the lyrics. On this issue, Shabana Azmi remained neutral.

Javed Akhtar won the National Film Award for the best lyrics in ‘Saaz’ (1997).

It is not an easy task for a novice to write lyrics based on Hindustani classical raags. The choice of words shows that Sai Paranjpye has hold over Sanskritised Hindi. For the first time, I have heard the word kanakalankrit bhor (dawn of golden colour). While the male version of the song is reflective of the onset of the rains, the female version of the song signals the end of the rains and the sun is shining giving a dawn of hope. This is symbolic for the resurgence of playback singing career of Bansi (Shabana Azmi) after she lost her will to sing.

Suresh Wadkar version of the song is pictuirsed on Raghuveer Yadhav who has played the role of a father of singing sisters, Mansi and Bansi. The picturization of the song is based on a true story in the life of Dinanath Mangeshkar who had gone to the house of Vishram Bedekar (Marathi and Hindi film director) in the midnight, drenched under heavy rains to borrow money to quench his thirst for alcohol. Bedekar taunted him by saying that it did not behove well for such a great artist to beg for money. Dinanath Mangeshkar retorted by impromptu singing a bandish in Raag Megh-Malhar and after completing the bandish, he took money from Bedekar as a present for his rendering.

Enjoy both the version of the songs in the backdrop of the approaching monsoon season.

Remembering Mohammed Rafi Sahab on his 95th birth anniversary :

Hullo Atuldom

Today’s post is for a song from the 1981 release “Zamaane ko Dikhaana Hai” which was produced and directed by Nasir Hussain. It marked the debut of Padmini Kolhapure as an adult; prior to this she had acted as a child star in numerous movies. The music department was handled by Majrooh Sultanpuri and R D Burman. The songs were play-backed by Asha Bhonsle, Shailendra Singh, Mohd. Rafi and Pancham. Nasir Hussain took a few scenes from his “Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hain” – song on train top; runaway girl from “Caravan” and a song & dance competition inspired from “Hum Kisise Kum Nahin”. Additionally, there are multiple songs in a scene as in “Yaadon Ki Baraat” and “Hum Kisise Kum Nahin”.

The story of the movie was very simple and straight: – a rich man, Dr. Shreeram Lagoo (may his soul rest in peace) has two sons Ramesh (Randhir Kapoor in a guest appearance) and Ravi (Rishi Kapoor). Ramesh (the older son) loves and marries a not-so-rich girl and so is banished from the household. All this happens during the absence of the younger Ravi who convinces his dad to forgive his BHAIYYA and sets out to bring his brother back. He finds that his bhaiyya and bhabhi are dead leaving their baby in the care of the bhabhi’s sister Kanchan (Padmini Kolhapure). Now his job is to convince Kanchan of his good intentions, fall in love with her in the process and take her & his nephew home but not before the movie runs through its set of twists and turns. Then there is also the rich man’s bad brother to take care of before the movie comes to an ‘ALL IS WELL THAT ENDS WELL’ close.

The movie had fairly popular songs, two of which are already on the blog. Today’s song is a multi- version song. Also, one of the version forms part of the multiple song set that I mentioned. In one version we have a song and dance competition where Vijay Arora (guest appearance) along with his partner (Aarti Gupta- also in guest appearance) challenges Rishi to the floor. But he is too drunk to get off the chair. So, Padmini takes to the floor sings & moves a leg and Rishi Kapoor joins and they compete with good support from the kids in the audience.

The second version with different stanzas has a drunk Padmini leading the song where the lovers fantasize about their future. We had Mohd. Rafi and Asha Bhosle giving their voices to the two songs.

This movie released about a year after Rafi saab’s death. This post is also to celebrate the 95th birth anniversary of Padmashri Mohd Rafi.
Rafi saab- the man who started his career in films in 1944 with a song under Shyam Sunder’s baton. In the career that spanned 36 years he had lent his voice for all the actors who have graced the silver screen in that time frame. He also appeared on-screen in two films. He was the favourite singer of an entire generation and the following generation too. People loved his Halke-Phulke songs as much as his classical based songs. He had great control on his voice and could go full-throated or soft in the same song. Don’t know why god stopped making singers like him and no matter how much one sounded like Rafi saab they couldn’t sing like him and none of his clones or apes or people who claimed to have been inspired by him reached that height of popularity. And I have heard and read in various places that he was a very humble human being. Like the song which Amitabh sang in a movie (in Mohd. Aziz’s voice) in 1990 “na phankaar tujhsa tere baad aaya, Mohd. Rafi tu bahut yaad aaya”; we, his fans, too miss him.

Wishing that Rafi Saab was still with us and thanking god for giving us such a divine-voiced singer let us enjoy today’s song.

Jai Sri Krishna.
Jai Govinda Jai Gopala.

The accompanying song is from Vinod Doshi presented 1983 release ‘Nastik’ which was directed by Pramod Chakravarthy. It starred Hema Malini, Nalini Jaywant, Reeta Bhadhuri, Sarika, Amitabh Bachchan, Pran, Amjad Khan, Deven Verma, Madan Puri, Bharat Bhushan, Lalitha Pawar, Jayshree T, Ratanmala, Praveen Paul, Kamal Kapoor, Shammi, Bhagwan, Yusuf Khan, Kamran, Viju Khote, Azaad, Pehalwan, Julian, Jaswant, Habib, Bob Christo, Daljeet, Tom Alter, Jezebel, Ranveer Raj, Darshan, Sehgal, Sunder Taneja, Umesh Khanna, Mehar Singh, Manik, Vaman, Master Raju, Baby Pinky, and Master Rajesh (young landlord grows up to be Amjad Khan).

It was basically an action-drama showcasing Amitabh as a young man (Shankar) who is outraged when his father is killed by the village landlord’s son Tiger (Amjad Khan) who also separates him from his mother and sister. He becomes an atheist – Nastik, and vows revenge on Tiger. Enroute to this destination of his, he encounters two small time crooks in Hema Malini and Pran. Like any masala movie the separated family members rediscover each other, Pran’s daughter regains consciousness to identify the person who tried to rape and kill her. So now Pran and Amitabh join forces and the family reunites in the climax at their village and the wrong doer is brought to book.

This movie had eight songs one of which is there on the blog. Today on the occasion of Sri Krishnashtami or Janmashtami, I present this bhajan, which appears twice in the movie. The movie opens with this bhajan as it is Shri Krishna Jayanti in the movie too. The first part is in the voices of Alka Yagnik and Sadhana Sargam. The bhajan comes again at the climax when Amitabh Bachchan has to deal with an almost dying sister – Reeta Bhadhuri and recollects the bhajan that he had sung with his father, sister etc in his childhood. The second version is in the voices of Mahendra Kapoor and Manhar Udhas (for Bharat Bhushan, Amitabh does not lip sync).

Blog ten year challenge (2009-2019)- Song number 3
———————————————

When I began Blog ten year challenge (2009-2019) on 2 february 2019, the challenge ran for two days before hitting a roadblock that lasted two days. The reason was, allthe movies that were covered on 4 and 5 february 2009 were already YIPPEED so none of their songs were left to be covered on the same date ten year later. Same fate befell all movies (bar one) that were covered on 6 february 2009 as well.

The only movie whose song was covered on 6 february 2009 and which still has a few songs left to be discussed ten years later is “Sitaaron Se Aage”(1958). This movie was produced by V L Narasu and directed by Satyen Bose for Narasu Studio, Madras. This “social” movie had Ashok Kumar, Vyjyanti Mala, Johny Walker, Jagdeesh Sethi, Raja Sulochana, Shammi, Manmohan Krishna, Ifthikar, Kundan, Sampson, Krishnkant, Leela Mishra, Rama Sukul, Rajendra, Tony Walker, Sagar, Ravikant, Prem Dhawan, Moolchand Kapoor, Radheshyam, Bishan Khanna, Vasantrao Pahalwan, Sailen Bose, B M Dixit, Patanjali etc in it.

The movie had ten songs in it. Eight of these songs are covered in the blog. Here are the details of the eight songs covered in the past:-

When I checked the remaining songs, I discovered that they are part one and two of the same song. This multiple version song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman. The song is picturised on Vyjyanti Mala.

With this song, all the songs of “Sitaaron Se Aage”(1958) are now showcased in the blog and the movie joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Blog Day : 3854 Post No. : 14866

Three days ago (viz on 2 february 2019), I began the blog’s own “ten Year Challenge” where we began to post another song from a movie whose song (another one) was posted on the same day ten years ago. I began this seties with “Sharaabi”(1984), and on the next day (3 february 2019), it was the turn of “Do Dishaayen”(1982).

This “ten Year Challenge” was a non starrer of the next day viz 4 february 2019, because the movies whose songs were covered ten years ago on 4 february 2019 have already been YIPPEED in the blog. Smae is the case for today viz 5 february 2019. Tomorrow givven us some respite because one (just one) of the movies that were covered on 6 february 2009 is still un yippeed. So we can hope to resume this “ten Year Challenge” tomorrow.

In the process of this challenge, our YIPPEE project gets an inadvertent impetus as well. We not only feel glad to see that so many movies, that made their debuts in the blog ten years ago are already YIPPEED. Even the unYIPPEED movies get some renewed attention towards this project.

Take the case of “Sharaabi”(1984) for instance. When I covered the fourth song from this song as part of “ten Year Challenge”, I realised that two songs from the movie were yet to be covered. On futher checking, it turned out that the two songs were multiple version songs. In other words, they could be covered in one writeup.

Here are the details of the songs covered earlier:-

“Sharaabi”(1984) was produced by Satyendra Pal and directed by Prakash Mehra. The movie had Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Prada, Om Prakash, Ranjeet, Pran, Satyen Kappu, Deepak Parashar, Smita Patil, Bharat Bhushan, C S Dube, A K Hangal, Dinesh Hingoo, Viju Khote, Mukri, Suresh Oberoi, Sudhir, Mayur, Gurbachan, Asha Lata, Chandrashekhar, Jankidas, Pinchoo Kapoor, Ram Sethi, Rajan Haksar, Sunder etc in it.

This remaining song has a male version sung by Kishore Kumar and a female version sung by Asha Bhonsle. The male version , which also has the voice of chorus is picturised as a street song where Amitabh Bachchan disturbs the sleep of people at night, just to search for Jaya Prada who, he is vaguely aware of being a resident of that locality.

The female version of the song is picturised as a radio/ recording song where Jaya Prada playing a successful singer sings this song whose lyrics and tune are clearly plagiarised from our hero. Our hero and his faithful sidekick Om Prakash watch/ listen while their intellectual property right is thus nonchalantly being violated by the lady.

With this song, all the songs of “Sharaabi”(1984) are now featured in the blog and the movie thus joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

“Baawra” (1950) was directed by G Rakesh for Shri Durga Pictures. The movie had Raj Kapoor, Nimmi, Lalita Pawar, Hiralal, K N Singh, Sundar, Rattan Kumar etc in it.

One song from this movie has been discussed in the past. Here is the second song from the movie. this song is sung by Lata. Gaafil Harnalvi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Krishan Dayal.

Only the audio of this song is available. going by the starcast, the song could have been picturised on Nimmi though one cannot be sure of it. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by nahm.

Ed Note-Much later, It came to notice that this song also has a duet version, which is sung by Geeta Dutt and Rafi.

Today (4 january 2013) is the birth anniversary of Nirupa Roy (4 January 1931 – 13 October 2004). To most moviewatchers, she was the eternally suffering Maa of Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor in several movies of 1970s, but that was only part of her impressive cv. She had made her debut an a movie actress in late 1940s and she acted as a leading lady in many movies throughout 1950s and early part of 1960s before easing into the roles of Bhabhi and later maa from late 1960s onwards. I find it curious to realise now that she at the age of 44, played the mother of Amitabh Bachchan (then aged 34) and Shashi Kapoor (then aged 38) in 1975 in Deewaar.
