“Sharbati Aankhen”(1945) was directed by Ramchandra Thakur for Wadia Movietone, Bombay. This movie had Vanmala, Ishwarlal, Agha, Sumati Gupte, Rajkumari Shukla, Aftab, Harish,Anwari, Kelkar, Firoz Dastur,Asbela Begum,Alaknanda, Nand Kishore, Sayyed Ahmed, M.K.Hasan etc in it.

#the Decade of Nineties – 1991 – 2000 #

(A tribute to Composer Khayyam Saab on his birth anniversary)

Today 18th February 2023 is the Ninety-sixth birth anniversary of Mohammed Zahur “Khayyam” Hashmi Saab, whom we fondly know as Khayyam Saab. Had he been alive, he would have turned ninety-six years old today.
He was born on 18.02.1927 and he passed away on 19.08.2019.
As a tribute to him today I am presenting his song composition from the movie “Mohabbaton Kaa Safar-1995”.
‘Mohabbaton Kaa Safar-1995’ was directed by Mohammad Salahuddin Parvez for ‘Al Salam International Productions’. Mohammad Salahuddin Parvez was also the producer of this movie and he also wrote all the songs in this movie.
The star cast of this movie included Imran Khan, Shanti Priya, Aruna Irani, Raza Murad, Arjun, Amrish Puri, Mehmood and others.
Upasna Singh had a guest appearance in this movie.
This movie has as many as twelve songs. Out of these twelve songs Khayyam had composed eleven songs. (The composer for the remaining one song is not known).
Pankaj Udhas, Suresh Wadkar, Kavita Krishnamurty, Udit Narayan, Jagjit Kaur, Jayaprada and Amrish Puri had given their voices to the songs in this movie.
As mentioned in Hindi Filmography Vol-I (1986-2000) this movie was passed by Censor Board on 18.10.1995.
This movie, even though a recent release by the standards of the blog, seems to be an obscure movie of its time. I could not find videos of the songs of this movie or even the audio’s individual songs of this movie except a duet song and a complete ‘jukebox’ of the audio songs is available. (A partial video of this movie is available on internet but it seems to be copied one and it is not much clear).
Today we listen to a song from this movie which is a multiple version song having a duet, a male version and a female version.
It is sung by Pankaj Udhas and Kavita Krishnamurty. Lyrics are by Mohammad Salahuddin Parvez and music is composed by Khayyam Saab.
From the partial video of the movie available on internet it can be easily guessed that on the screen this song is performed by the actor Imran Khan and actress Shantipriya.
This song is a beautiful composition to listen to and it grows upon us if we listen to it a few times. It takes us to an altogether different world of its own.
With this song the movie ‘Mohabbaton Kaa Safar-1995’ makes its debut on the blog today.

Today 1st May’2022 is the one hundred and third birth anniversary of legendary Singer Manna Dey (01.05.1919-24.10.2013). As a tribute to him, I am presenting a motivational song sung by him from the movie ‘Prahaar-1991’.
‘PRAHAAR: The Final Attack’ was a film Produced by Sudhakar Bokade and Directed by Nana Patekar. The star cast includes Nana Patekar, Dimple Kapadia, Madhuri Dixit, and Gautam Joglekar who played the second lead with Madhuri Dixit. Prominent Stage artist Shri.Habib Tanvir played the role of Gautam’s father.
The film was produced under the banner of ‘Divya Films combine’. Its cinematography was done by Debu Deodhar.
‘Prahaar’ had as many as three songs, and the one under discussion today has three versions sung two by Manna Dey (happy and sad) and one by Kavita Krishnamurthy. The lyrics are written by Mangesh Kulkarni, and music is scored by Laxmikant–Pyarelal.
I had watched this movie during my stay at Kota (Rajasthan) and I liked it very much. I watched this movie at least three-four times.
The movie highlights many issues within our society and for me this is one of the bests movies of Hindi Cinema. I will not go into the details of the story of the movie as it is better to watch and feel than to read about this movie. I wish that this film should be watched by everyone in India and introspect ourselves and our surroundings and the happenings around us… for a better India.
All the actors and actresses acting in the movie have delivered a power packed performance.

Once upon a time, in our office, the crowd was more interfering in each other’s lives. There would be judgmental comments about each other, if someone works very hard, there was gossip about them. If someone is not very hard working there would be gossip and snide comments about them. 90’s and early 2000’s was a time when all had more time to bother about other people. Interference is one way to look at it. We were in one corner of Mumbai, and there were very few people who travelled long distances to arrive, and most of us were from nearby areas. There was less of anonymity or disregard of big city atmosphere. Come to think of it, most of us used to think of the office as a second home. As the working day would be full of work, talking to people and friends. We were more open to all sort of talk, discussions and even gossip. The office building would be like a small village, where everyone knew everything about everyone. That was an atmosphere, where, every new day was a new beginning. And come weekend, we would be full of plans for the next week. On Monday, we will do this or start on that work.
I don’t know, it feels as if things have gradually changed over the decades. Now every Friday, most of us actually feel joy that there will be no office for 2 days. Long weekend is more joyous, we all wish each other happy weekend. Whereas earlier it was, ‘see you on Monday’.
There was no A.C. in the office, nor fancy blinds or fancy name plates on the cabins, not much eating out and very few snack parties. But those were the happier days. Today, I have more money to spend, more authority to assert, freer to shop what ever the sales persons bring to sell, more snacks and lunch to order from outside eateries, as the office canteen is still is very bad. But the comradery of old days is absent. For sure, not all is ingenuine, but still the happiness quotient is gone. Or maybe I am simply bored.
Yeah, change is a part of life. Colleagues and friends of the older generation have all retired. Some of the dear friends have moved away, or transferred to different places. One corner of Mumbai has begun to feel and behave like a city. I am ready to admit, that I may have also changed. As we mature, it brings a certain discretion, in how we deal with new people. What was working and meeting with other people, has now become more of a dealing with people. Or having learnt from so many experiences, I have learnt to have superficial contact with people. I thought being superficial is just not my nature. But recently, I am introspecting, that maybe I have become like everyone else. Not a good sight.
I have seen some people in my life, and every time I have resolved, never to be like them. Some times we encounter people with really ugly mindset. I have a friend, who would always be looking for excuses, why certain person behaves like that, or has such type of manner. For a longish time, I also tried to look the other way, whenever such ugliness showed its face. I became so adept at ignoring things, that it would take a new person coming into the set up and that person would show me with examples, that such and such things are happening and I am not even aware. So, this was actually a sort of tuning out, from the atmosphere, so the bad things are totally ignored.
The reason I went into the flashback and into those good old days is the song from the film ‘Taal’. In early 2000’s we used to have lot of extra curricular activities in the office. One of the favourite events was ‘antakshari’. In one of those competitions, I had my friend as my partner. This one was a serious competition, very serious with all the contestants very keen to win. The hosts had done lot of hard work, to prepare for the tough rounds. One such tough rounds were picking up chits of a set of words, and recognize the song, which I found to be very easy. We did very well in that round. We did well in the round for recognizing the mukhda from the stanza also. Then there was the round of ‘dumb-charade’ where the chit was for movie name. My partner, picked up the chit and it was ‘Taal’. She made the suitable ‘Taal’ action and I knew the name. But unfortunately, I could not sing any song, none would come to mind. Both me and my friend were repeating ‘taal se taal milaa’, but that is not mukhda. So, we lost those crucial points, despite recognizing so many of the songs in stanza/mukhda round and the ‘set of word’ round, we finished second.
The movie ‘Taal’ was produced and directed by Subhash Ghai, who celebrated his birthday on 24/01/2022. Now it is the birthday of Kavita krishnamurthy today, so the second version is by Kavita Krishnamurthy and Sukhwendra Singh with Chorus. First version is actually a group song, which has Sonu Nigam with ARR, Anuradha Sriram, and Sujata Mohan. This song has long been in the list of Sonu Nigam songs, which I want to post. No better occasion, then Kavita Krishnamurthy’s birthday and post no. two of series on ARR. The Kavita Krishnamurthy version is listed as a separate song actually, but the same mukhda of first version is part of this song too, so it is a version song. The songs are picturized on Aishwarya Rai, Anil Kapoor and Akshaye Khanna.
Those were cable TV days, so I have seen this movie on cable TV. Some Sundays were spent watching movies on cable TV, 2-5 and then 6-9 shows. They would show the newer movies at 11-2 also sometimes. Like all Subash Ghai movies, this was also a musical, teaming up with ARR for the first time, who teamed up with Anand Bakshi as lyricist for the first time. I find this score of a purely hindi film much more attractive then, the dubbed songs in Mani Ratnam films.

A very Happy Republic day to one and all.

This is the national pledge which is commonly found printed in the opening pages of the school text books and calendars. It is recited in the morning assembly of most Indian schools. It is part of the Indian Constitution. It is commonly recited by Indians in unison at public events, Independence day, Republic day etc. At least it used be so when I was a student, don’t know if this is still in practice. We all know who wrote the National Anthem or the National song but the author of the National Pledge is largely unknown. His name is P.V. Subba Rao who was a Telugu author and bureaucrat who composed the pledge when he was serving as District Treasury Officer in Vishakapatnam district in 1962/63. It was subsequently translated into other languages. Apparently Subba Rao himself was unaware of the Pledge having been adopted as National Pledge till he heard his grand daughter reading it from a textbook.
Hope we all get back to taking the pledge today on our 71st Republic day.
“Diljale” (1996) had music by Anu Malik and Javed Akhtar was the lyricist. It was produced by Paramjeet Baweja and directed by Harry Baweja; Karan Razdan (of the popular Doordarshan serial “Rajani” fame) was its story-screenplay-dialogue writer. It had a cast headed by Sonali Bendre- Ajay Devgan- Madhoo- Parmeet Sethi and Amrish Puri, Shakti Kapoor, Himani Shivpuri, Farida Jalal, Akash Khurana, Master Raju (as Raju Shrivastav), Rakesh Bedi, Tinnu Anand, Aroon Bakshi, Gulshan Grover etc in the supporting cast.
It was the story of Shyam (Ajay Devgan) who is the son of a patriotic village leader (Akash Khurana) who is in love with Radhika (Sonali Bendre) daughter of the local politician and an erstwhile Rajasaheb. The Raja cannot digest the love between the college students because of economic and class differences. He also cannot tolerate the village leader who is an obstacle in his aim to usurp the land of the villagers. The Raja, with the help of the local corrupt cop Gulshan Grover manages to frame the village leader and brand Shyam a terrorist when the latter goes to question the Raja’s actions. This causes a rift between the lovers.
Shyam manages to escape and finds refuge with Dara (Amrish Puri) and his gang who are basically pawns at the hand of India’s enemies. Shyam as Shaka tries to settle scores with Rajasaheb, and in process a few of his associates are captured by the army. Dara and his gang then hijack a bus of Vaishnodevi pilgrims so that they can pressurize the army into releasing their gang members. Radhika and her aunt are also part of the hostages. This provides the ex-lovers opportunity to clarify misunderstandings. The movie then proceeds to the climax with Shaka/ Shyam managing to avenge his father’s humiliation etc. He also manages to bring a change in the thinking of Dara and his gang who surrender to the army when they see that Shaka steps on a landmine that was meant to blow them up. All-in-all it was an entertaining movie but IMHO the solution to the terrorist problem, as shown in the movie, was rather lame.
“Diljale” had Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Poornima, Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan and Master Aditya Narayan who has now grown into an adult and is a singer, composer and television host now. We have one song already in the blog out of the eight or nine songs that the movie had.
Today’s song is a two-version song. In the first version we have Akash Khurana lip-syncing to Kumar Sanu and tutoring his son about the motherland. The son lip-syncs to Aditya Narayan. This version has all the trappings of a National Day song with flag unfurling, releasing doves and Hindu Muslim bhaichara or unity as one may choose to view it. The second version starts as an antakshari played by the captives of Dara and gang and culminates as the patriotic song sung by Radhika in Kavita Krishnamurthy’s voice.
Incidentally 25th January happened to be Kavita Krishnamurthy’s 63rd birthday. She was born in Delhi as Sharada Krishnamurthy. She is married to Dr. L. Subramaniam a renowned composer, violinist, and conductor who is trained in Carnatic classical music as well as Western Classical music. Kavita got an opportunity to sing under the auspices of Hemant Kumar for a Bengali film in 1971 when she was still in college and Lata Mangeshkar was her co-singer. Hemantda’s daughter was instrumental in reintroducing Kavita to Hemantda and he began using her for his live performances. Manna Dey spotted her in one of these shows and then she sang a few advertisement jingles. Until 1985, when “Pyar Jhukta Nahin” happened, Kavita was a dubbing artist for many composers. “tumse milkar, na jaane kyun” and “Pyar Jhukta Nahin” was the turning point of her career. Here is wishing Kavita Krishnamurthy a life filled with happiness and music and good health.

Today 6th January’2021 is thirty-fourth Remembrance Anniversary of Music Director Jaidev (born on 3 August 1918 and passed away on 6th January’ 1987).
When I checked his filmography, I noted that he has given music to only forty-two movies (including one Nepali movie) though his first movie as music director came in 1955 – ‘Joru Ka Bhai’ and the last movie he composed music was ‘Zumbish-1986’ (if data in the sources on net is correct).
In his film career Jaidev has given us unforgettable music and even some immortal songs which will always be cherished by music lovers.
Earlier I wished to present this post with his complete filmography, however I could not compile the data in time to send this post. And since I do not want to miss this opportunity to share this song which I first listened to on radio and later had in my collection in a ‘two cassette set’ – ‘Yaad Aati Rahi -A Homage to Jaidev – brought by HMV in ‘1987’. I had bought this set on 17.12.1987 in my collection.
This album contains songs from ‘Ham Dono-1961’, ‘Samundari Daaku-1956’, ‘Joru Ka Bhai-1955’, ‘Anjali-1957’, ‘Kinaare-Kinaare-1963’, ‘Mujhe Jeene Do-1963’, ‘Do Boond Paani-1971’, ‘Aayi Teri Yaad-1980’, ‘Prem Parbat-1973’, ‘Maan Jaayiye-1972’, ‘Alaap-1977’, ‘Reshma Aur Shera-1971’, ‘Gaman-1978’, ‘Dooriyaan-1979’, ‘Parinay-1974’, ‘Gharonda-1977’, and ‘Tumhaare Liye-1978’. (This way I have tried to note his notable movies here)
And it contains one song from the movie ‘Wohi Baat’. I was aware of this song since then and may be had heard it on radio too. In the cassette it has the Asha Bhonsle version.
However, one day I was just humming this song and I remember it was in my collection. But I was under the impression that it was a song sung by Bhupinder Singh. Maybe I had sometime heard this in the voice of Bhupinder Singh on radio.
So, when I checked the blog, I was surprised that this song has not been posted yet. Then I looked for it on the internet and found both versions of this song.
The movie name was mentioned as ‘Wohi Baat’. Finally, when I checked the HFGK Vol- V (1981-1985), I became aware of the details of this movie and other information about this movie that it was released under the ‘title’ as ‘Sameera-1982’, though the music was released on gramophone records under the title ‘Wohi Baat’.
Today on Jaidev’s ‘Remembrance Anniversary’ I wish to introduce this wonderful song (and the movie too) on the blog.
‘Sameeraa-1982’ was directed by Vinay Shukla for ‘Sanket Chitra, Bombay’.
It had Parikshit Sahni, Shabana Azmi (as Sameeraa), Mithun Chakravarty, Amol Palekar and others.
This movie was based on the story written by Kamleshwar. Vinay Shukla who directed this movie had also written it.
K.K. Mahajan and Hasubhai J. Shah were the producers of this movie.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 12.04.1982.
As per HFGK Vol -V five songs were recorded for this movie but details of only four songs is available. The title for the fifth song is left blank.
All the songs for this movie were written by Naqsh Lyallpuri and music was composed by Jaidev.
Let us now enjoy the today’s song sung by Bhupinder Singh and Asha Bhonsle as two different solo versions and pay our tribute to Jaidev and his immortal music.
With today’s song ‘Sameeraa-1982’ makes its debut on the blog.

So the dream girl is turning 7 & 2, 72. This same way we should make 2 & 2, 22. Right ? wrong, imdb is making “two and two make five”, in simple translation of the movie “Do aur do paanch”(1980). They have “Athiest” for “Nastik”, “The patriot” for “Deshpremi” and “Blind law” for ‘Andha Kanoon”. This is great going. But they go a step ahead and translate “Naseeb” as “Destiny and Fate”, whereas “Dard” is “Conflict of emotion”. I learnt today that ‘Trishul” is “Trident” and “Kasauti” is “Criterion” in English. Many of the 173 films listed in the filmography have been left alone, to dwell in their hindi/urdu quagmire. Some titles like ‘Shareef Badmash” ‘Sharafat” ‘Sholay” ‘Sachhe ka bolbalaa”, “ Ek chadar maili si”,”Jise tu qubool kar le” and ‘Maan Gaye ustaad” have been wisely given a wide berth.
But they can’t stop from falling into “Seven on seven” for “Satte pe satta”. And they failed to translate “Dharmatma” into “The Godfather” ?. They could have done worse and translated “Raziya Sultan” to “Emperor of Contentment”. I did tell Peevesie’s mom the other day, this translating of movie names business is a good exercise for the brain.
Let us go to the song and birthday girl now. The Wikpedia page on Hema Malini is here and is quite exhaustive. If I have to say something from my own “two paisa worth” opinion, Hema Malini was one courageous female artist, who being a public personality, chose to be Dharmendra’s second wife, rejecting other eligible bachelors such as Sanjeev Kumar and Jeetendra. About Dharmendra’s commitment, there is very filmy dialogue “ekbaar main ne commitment kar li, to phir main apne aap ki bhi nahi suntaa”. Bigger men and personalities have been found to have feet of clay, in similar situations.
The song I have chosen to present today is a much heard and seen song in “Chaayageet”. It was lying buried in the memory and as soon as I saw the title of the song it came back that it is a song where HemaMalini is playing “hide n seek” with kids in the garden. The kids in question are, Master Chintu, Master Raju, Master Alankar, Master Laddu, Padmini Kolhapure, Madhu Malini, Master chicoo, Bunty, Bobby etc. all child artist. The list is sourced from two different sources, so could be inaccurate. There is sad version also of the song, where these kids are singing and searching for Hema Malini.
This is the brief story line of the film, which stars, Ashok Kumar, Dharmendra, Asrani, Prem Chopra etc.:
Sapna, who works under a number of aliases, is a modern day female Robin Hood, who steals from whoever she can, so that she can maintain a home for orphans. One day she meets with wealthy and eligible bachelor, AnupamVerma, and poses as a wealthy princess. He takes her to meet his grandparents, and even lets her live in his palatial bunglow. But soon Sapna’s past catches up with her, when she is recognized as Champabai, a prostitute.
The creative team is the prolific Laxmikant-Pyarelal-AnandBakshi, with Lata Mangeshkar singing both versions with few un-credited kids voices and chorus.
