Today’s song is from the film ‘Mala The Mighty’ (1948).
When I had first heard the name of this film, I wondered how ‘Mala’- a girl can be mighty ? I could never imagine that Mala could be a male’s name too. It was only after I grew up and toured the Eastern India (read W.B.) for official work, I came across this strange phenomenon – where, what is considered as an exclusive feminine name in the rest of India, could be a male’s name too ! Names like Mrinal, Vimal, Kamal, Jyoti, Mridul, Daya, Champavati, Devki, Dwaraka, Hiran etc. India truely is unique !
Film ‘Mala The Mighty’ was described as a costume drama, but clearly it was a C grade jungle film. The film’s other name was also ‘Sher-e-Jungle’. The film was produced by Basant Pictures of Homi Wadia. Homi was the younger brother of JBH Wadia and they were joint owners of Wadia Movietone, which was famous for making action/stunt films in the 30’s and the 40’s. The arrival of Fearless Nadia into Wadia Movietone strengthened its fortunes, The younger brother Homi Wadia fell in love with Nadia. he wanted to marry her, but his mother was against it. Therefore, only after his mother’s death, Homi married the then 51 year old Nadia and she became NADIA WADIA !
In 1942 there was a dispute between the brothers. The elder JBH Wadiawanted to make social and other genre films, while Homi wanted to continue with action/stunt films. He felt the financial risks were much less in action films and as such they already had a very good team of actors. In the end Homi Wadia formed his own Basant Pictures. The whole team led by Nadia joined Homi’s production house. Wadia Movietone had the non-human participants for stunt films, like the horse -Punjab Ka Beta, a Dog – Tiger and a Motor car – Rolls Royce Ki Beti. Homi Wadia made a new team with the Horse – Rajpoot, Dog – Moti, Motor Car – Austin Ki Bachhi and in addition they had a motorcycle – Runnio.
Home Wadia had the winning lead pair of Nadia and John Cawas for stunt films. By 1948, Nadia had reached the midpoint of her career. From 1933, in 15 years’ time she had done 28 action/stunt films. She slowed down and in the next 11 years she did 15 films only. Homi was always on the lookout for an actress who would take over from Nadia. First he got actress Radha Rani who did only 7 films for him and left. Then he found actress Leela- about whom no information is available. There was a time when several Leelas were acting in Hindi films – like Leela Chitnis, Leela Desai, Leela Chandragiri, Leela Gupte, Leela Pawar, Leela Sawant, Singer Leela Mehta and later on Leela Naidu. Out of these Leela Pawar, Leela Sawant and Leela Gupte were acting in stunt films of mainly Master Bhagwan. But Wadia’s Leela was not known. Anyway, she did only a few films, got married and left films.
Cast of the film was John Cawas, Leela, Dalpat, Azim, Shri Bhagwan, Shyamsunder, Waman Talpade and a few others. The film was also directed by John Cawas. A physical culturist, John Cawas was born in 1910 in Jubbulpore, Madhya Pradesh state. Athletic, handsome, and with an impressive physique (he won the 1930 All-India Bodybuilding Championship), John was a natural choice for the action flicks that had become so popular in the 1930s.
Hailing from a Parsi family he appeared as an extra in Wadia Movietone’s ‘Noor-e-Yaman’ (1935) which led to supporting roles in that company’s films ‘Desh Deepak’ (1935), ‘Hunterwali’ (1935) and ‘Miss Frontier Mail’ (1936), all featuring stunt queen Fearless Nadia, who he would continue to work with in countless other films.
He quickly graduated to lead roles in pictures like ‘Toofani Tarzan’ (1937), ‘Diamond Queen’ (1940), ‘Stunt King’ (1944), ‘Black and White’ (1944), ‘Atom Bomb’ (1947), ‘Maya Mahal’ (1949), ‘Jungle Ka Jaadu’ (1955), ‘Magic in Baghdad’ (1956), ‘Diler Daku’ (1957), and ‘Circus Queen’ (1959). He acted in 40 films, out of which he worked in 26 films with Fearless Nadia. He also directed 3 films – ‘Mala The Mighty’ (1948), ‘Baghdad Ka Jaadu’ (1956) and ‘Zimbo Ka Beta’ (1966).
Not content with just acting, he also kept busy as an assistant director, director, and writer on numerous films, the bulk of which were produced by JBH and Homi Wadia. Wadias gave him a flat in their office building to live – free for life. John Cawas never married, and after retiring from films, he continued on as caretaker of the Wadia film offices until his death on October 4, 1993.
Another cast member was Azeem – who later on became well known as a Fight Composer in Hindi films. Azim Bhai (real name: Saiyad Azim Jafri) was one of the leading action directors in Hindi films. After a stint in the army he headed off to Bombay in 1934 and found work as stunt man at Eastern Art Film Company where he was put under contract and he worked on most of the company’s films like ‘Sher Ka Panja’ (1934) ‘Bal Hatya’ (1935), ‘Dharam Ki Devi’ (1935), and ‘Prem Raatri’ (1936).
When Eastern Art Film went out of business, Azim moved over to Saroj Company then found work at Paramount Film Company, Imperial Film, and Wadia Movietone where he worked both as a stunt man and as an actor. Afterwards, he joined Master Bhagwan’s team and acted in many action/stunt films.
By the end of the 1940s, he became a Fight Master independently. Azim became well known for his swordsmanship and he often worked alongside fellow stunt coordinator Master Douglas and two were tasked with training Dilip Kumar and Prem Nath in that sport for the film ‘Aan’ (1953). Azim has also trained many action directors and stunt persons including Ghani, Ravi Khan, Dawood (aka Hercules), Veeru Ustad, and Mansoor.
Azim Bhai coordinated the stunts on a number of fantasy films including ‘King Kong’ (1963), ‘Jadugar Daku’ (1962), ‘Parasmani’ (1963), ‘Sunehri Nagin’ (1964), ‘Hercules’ (1964), and ‘Aaya Toofan’ (1964), the spy films ‘Spy In Rome’ (1968) and ‘Kismat’ (1969), as well as the horror flicks ‘Bees Saal Pehle’ (1972) and ‘Ab Kya Hoga’ (1977).
He died on 23-10-1984.
There was another Fight Composer with a similar name – S Azimbhai (Sheikh Azim), who was much junior and he operated from 1954 to 1999. He is not to be confused with the senior one.
The third interesting name in the cast is of Dalpat – a sure name in action films. Dalpat (Joshi) was a stunt artiste. A tall, sophisticated and suave person mostly appeared in negative roles . Dalpat was a part of Wadia’s unit since its inception and played the role of villain in the stunt movies ,which used to have Fearless Nadia and John Cawas or occasionally some other hero, apt in performing stunts.
Owing to the unprecedented popularity of Miss Nadia, other filmmakers also cast her along with John Cawas and Dalpat in their similar type of stunt movies for which she was known. After her era was over, Basant Pictures concentrated their energy in making mythological and Arabian Night movies, in which Dalpat always had a role. Later in the 50s, the studio system came to an end and actors and technicians who learned their art from their benevolent master Homi Wadia, looked for assignments from other producers.
One may call it destiny or lack of initiative on the part of Dalpat. He was offered only costume/stunt/religious movies by outside producers. Dalpat, who did a stint as production controller for a few movies, was reverentially called Dalpat Kaka owing to his age, seniority and status by film folks. Age did not affect his appearance and he looked as suave as he was many decades earlier. He started his career by acting first in ‘Hoor e Baghdad’ (1934). He worked in 120 films. His last film was ‘Toofaani Takkar’ (1978).
I had seen the film ‘Mala The Mighty’, in its second or maybe the third run in the early 50s. The film was a rehash of the frequently used, but tested formula of Tarzan – slightly modified. Such stories never stopped entertaining people. In any case who wanted the story? They all wanted the stunts, animals, fights and dances.
The story of the film is,
Mohanlal (Azim) is a rich businessman. Once while on a trip in a ship, on a bad stormy night, the ship is wrecked. He survives but his wife dies, and his 2 daughters are missing. After 15 years he decides to search for his daughters in the jungles of Kaliyana, bordering the sea, hoping that they might have been washed ashore.
With him is Chimanlal (Shri Bhagwan) who was to marry one of the daughters, and a friend Professor Tatto (Shyamsunder). On the border of the jungle they employ Ali Bux (Kareem), a guide and his friend Trivedi, who is actually a gold digger looking for the golden treasure of tribal queen Sheen. On their way they are attacked by tribals but there comes Mala The Mighty (John Cawas) who saves them with his army of elephants. Mala is the legendary king of the jungle who fights lions, tgers and kills crocodiles etc. He takes the party to his tree top house and they find Leela (Leela) a 17 year old beauty living as his companion.
Trivedi is captured by the tribals. He strikes a deal with Sheen, the queen (Leela – in double role), to capture Mala, whom Sheen loves, in exchange for the gold treasure. Mala gets captured and is brought to the tribal chief Rajan (Waman Talpade) who wants to kill him. Meanwhile Leela comes there with the party to rescue Mala. Mohan Lal recognises both girls as his long lost daughters. Rajan tries to kill Mala, but Sheen saves him and gets killed. The animal friends of Mala arrive and the tribals run away. Leela hugs her father but refuses to go with him, choosing to remain with Mala The Mighty.
Today’s song is sung by the film’s young and upcoming composer Chitragupta Shrivastav, M.A. Lyricist was Shyam Hindi.
The End !

Hullo to all in Atuldom
Round up of 2019
An eventful year comes to a close. I have had great experiences that will bring a smile on my face when I think of them or look at the related pictures.
First- my daughter gave me a promotion and I enjoyed every minute of the event. Only feeling at the end of it was— having waited for it from last July, when she announced her intention, I felt January came too soon and the week, with happenings related to the event, was over with the blessings of the elders of the family and good wishes of friends and relatives. And I must thank the Atulites too who came for it.
The next two months of the year were rather quiet. The major point of March being the R.M.I.M meet. I was lucky to have been able to attend the R.M.I.M in Bangalore this year -30th &31st March to be precise. And am I glad I attended it on both dates, unlike the last time when I went for one day and left almost immediately after lunch.
This time R.M.I.M was celebrating two birth centenaries – that of Chitragupta and Shamshad Begum. There was also a mention about the fact that Manna Dey would also have been 100 this year. Plus, there was a mention that many music luminaries of the past, who would have been 100 this year, need to be remembered.
On the occasion our Gajendraji reminisced about his encounter or meeting with the Shamshad Begum in 2012, when she was 92. He spoke about how sharp her memory was and about her sense of humour. He mentioned that when he asked her about her feelings towards her songs being remixed by the current generation her reply surprised him. She is said to have told him that by remixing, the songs were kept alive and more people were able to relish them.
Later during the post lunch session there was a debate or discussion on how social media impacted music and films. The discussion also touched whether it was right to colourise old black & white classics, remix or morph old videos etc. This was followed by Kushal Gopalka’s session where he spoke about his association with Shamshad Begumji. He mentioned another incident that showed Shamshad Begum’s view about life. He talked of an event for which he had escorted Shamshad Begumji; where the master of ceremonies asked her about her colleagues who were no more and had died rather young; for this -he says- her reply was “humari umr par nazar mat daaliye.”
My personal take-home from this was I got to meet the gracious, simple and humble Sudha Malhotra. She sounds very melodious in person even when she speaks.
For more on the meet I suggest visiting here.
April end saw me in Mumbai for a few days on some personal agenda. Which I clubbed with a met-up of friends from ASAD. That was a good gangout with guruji also landing back in Mumbai that morning and meeting Bakshishji and Nitinji for the first time (didn’t feel it was the first time though) and of course Sudhirji was also there. So, in all a good gangout even if I was present only for a short time I enjoyed.
June end was a trip to Bhopal to meet my gang of girls from college and chilling out in the heat of Madhya Bharat. But that was also fun, we parted with a promise of making it an annual affair.
July saw me in Kerala, the island resort of Ashtamudi, with newly acquired relatives and getting to know them. September end was Navaratri which saw me in my ‘sasural ka village’ as well as in Kolkata for Durga Pooja. A long-cherished dream of visiting the pooja pandals was fulfilled by my personal Santa.
Actually, for all of the above, I must thank my personal Santa as he never questions me or my intentions. He also turned a year older, an age when people normally hang-up their boots and think of taking life easy having worked for 40 years now. But my Santa has not yet thought about his boots or rest. He has a lot of enthusiasm for outings and excursions and is already planning his next joyful weekend. These breaks are what keep him going in stressful work conditions I suppose. God bless him forever.
I must thank our Sadanandji and Sudhirji for the song with this post. I am thanking Sudhirji as he suggested the song, since I have little knowledge of any song featuring the Shamshad Begum – Chitragupta combination. On a busy Saturday morning I pestered Sudhirji to find out if any Shamshad Begum song in Chitragupta’s music direction was left to be posted and he gave me this song before the day was out. Sadanandji has to be thanked as he is the one who has uploaded the song to YouTube. The movie is the 1953 release “Manchala” which had music by Chitragupta, the additional reason for my choosing this is, it is a duet by Shamshad Begum and Chitragupta.
Raja Mehdi Ali Khan was the lyricist for a movie which was produced and directed by Jayant Desai and had Nirupa Roy, Manhar Desai, Agha Jeevan etc in the cast. Going by the lyrics and the sound of the song the male in the song could have been Agha.
Happy Partying & tik tok tik tok to 2020.
Song-Dekho jee tum kuchh bolna na (Manchala)(1953) Singers-Shamshad Begam, Chitragupta, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-Chitragupta
Lyrics

dekhoji tum kuchh bolna na
dekhoji tum kuchh bolna na
aankhon mein gussa
haathon mein chappal
madam teri pit jaaye re
main toh na chhodoon

haathon mein agar aa jaaye re
haay
dekho ji tum kuchh bolna na
haan dekhoji tum kuchh bolna na
oooo ohoho ooo

apni mohabbat ka jhanda re
chhailla jo mere raste mein aaya

dekhoji tum kuchh bolna na
dekhoji tum kuchh bolna na
naari sadak pe

Today’s song is from a devotional, mythological film – Nav Durga-1953. Nav Durga does not mean New Durga here, but ‘Nav’ stands for nine. This film is about the nine forms of Devi Durga and how it saved its Bhakt from annihilation.
The film was produced by Homi Wadia’s Basant Pictures. It was directed by the great Editor and special effect-Trick scene expert Babubhai Mistri. Babubhai Mistri (5-9-1918 to 20-12-2010), in the beginning, was an assistant with Prakash pictures.Prakash was making a film “Khwabon ki Duniya”- 37, based on the famous novel “The Invisible Man” by H.G.Wells,1897.The shooting started but the basic problem was how to show the ‘invisible‘ man. There was no special effect technique available in India till then, like in Hollywood. Vijay Bhatt had an assistant called Babubhai Mistri, who accepted the challenge and using a dim light, a black curtain and a black thread to move articles, he achieved the desired results. This made the film not only a hit and popular one, but also a unique one. Babubhai Mistri, thus, became the father of the trick scenes and special effects in India. In the process, Babubhai also earned a nickname of ‘kaala dhaaga‘ (black thread) for rest of his life, in the film industry.
Babubhai directed 49 Hindi films-mostly B and C grade Mythologicals, Costume, and Historical films. He also directed 1 Telugu and 9 Gujarati films. His first film as a director was Muqabala-42. Surprisingly he started off with a social film, but there was a valid reason. The initial Poster Painter had developed into a skilled Editor and trick scene expert, by his own hard work, encouraged by the Wadia brothers. The film was an unusual film of a story of twin sisters. Wadias wanted Babubhai to do something which will make the film stand out from all other such films.
Directed by Babubhai Mistry, it was the last movie of Fearless Nadia for Wadia Movietone. She had a double role of twin sisters: good Madhuri and bad Rita.
Rita is kidnapped by the villain and made into a Night club singer, while Rai Bahadur brings up good Madhuri.
Nadia was appreciated much for the performance contrast for both roles.
This film was First in India to use Split-screen method for double roles, where both sisters could cross each others, shake hands and talk together. The other attraction was the Night club set, which,in case of police Raid, could be converted into a respected residence in few minutes. It was a great fun to watch these two things.
A happy ending picture, but to see and hear the laboured Hindi dialogues of Madhuri (good Nadia) was another treat.
The cast of the film Nav Durga-53 consisted of Usha Kiran, Mahipal, S N Tripathi, Sulochana Chatterji, Amarnath, Agha Shapur, Raja Sandow and many more. Usually, there are more characters in a Mythological film and hence their credit list is very long. In this list, the name of Raja Sandow appears. I am sure, this is not that Raja Sandow, who was famous as a silent film Hero and who acted in many Talkie films too. He died in 1942 itself. Obviously, this must be some other Raja, trying to cause “Same name confusion” without success, though.
However, one name in the cast – Amarnath- is worth a re-look. Amarnath (Bharadwaj) is one of the “same name confusions” victims. There were two Pt. Amarnath Music Directors, 1 actor Amar, 1 actor Amarnath and 1 actor/Director (K.) Amarnath.
This Amarnath was born in Hafizabad, in Gujaranwala district of Punjab (Now in Pakistan) in 1922. He started acting in 1939 with Kidar Sharma’s “Dil hi to hai”. Graduating from doing small roles he was made the Leading Man in Dalsukh Pancholi’s film “Patjhad”, started in 1947 opposite Meena (Shorey). Pancholi had to flee Lahore due to Partition riots, but he carried the negatives of Patjhad. Though the film was censored in India in 1948, it seems it was never released.
Amarnath (Bharadwaj) starred as Hero in many other films, like Naghma E Sehra-45, Papiha re-48, Barsat ki ek raat-48, Swayam sidha-49, Nai Bhabhi-50, Kamal ke phool-50, Sheesh Mahal-50, Jalte Deep-50, Johri-51, Nai zindagi-51 , Nirmohi-52, Nirmal-52, Bahu Beti-53, Nav Durga-53, Toofan-54 etc. Then he switched over to side roles. In all, he worked in 81 films (CITWF data). His last film was Kaun ho tum-70.
In India, there is no dearth of festivals. In fact, India can be called a Nation of Festivals. With scores of religions in India and every religion having its own Festivals, one can imagine the number of Festivals. Not every festival is celebrated all over the country, but even the major 7 religions have their own festivals. Hinduism being the largest religion (80% as per 2011 Census), almost every month has , if not a major, but minor festival in some or the other region of India.
The period of October to January is called a Festival season, as many major festivals like Dashehara, Diwali, Christmas and Sankranti fall in this period. Vijaya Dashami or Dashehra or Dasara is due in next month, so is Diwali too. Dashehra is celebrated also as a Durga Puja Festival enthusiastically, in the Eastern part of the country mainly, but all over India, Durga Puja is done.
Film Nav Durga-53 was about the powers of Maha Shakti Durga Mata. Durga is believed to have 9 forms. Navdurga, Nine forms of Durga, are nine manifestations of the goddess Durga in Hinduism, especially worshiped during the festival of Navratri where each of the nine manifested forms are venerated respectively for each night. In short, they are…
1. Shail Putri – Daughter of Himalayas
2. Bramhacharini – Daksh Kanya Sati-before marriage
3. Chandraghanta – After marriage to Shiv, adorned his forehead as Half Moon
4. Kushmanda – Living in the Sun
5. Skandmata – Mother of war lord Kartikey
6. Katyayani – Daughter of sage Katyayan, destroyed Mahishasur
7. Kaalratri – Most ferocious and fiercest, destroyer of Asurs Shumbh/ Nishumbh
8. Mahagauri – Goddess of purity and cleanliness and
9. Siddhidatri – Adi Parashakti, appears from Siva’s left side
The story of Nav Durga-53 was- Suryawarcha is punished by Indra dev for his arrogance and is sent to mrityulok(Earth),when he is about to get married to Vishala. On Visahala’s request Vishnu assures that he will come back to swarga again, but she must prey to Maa Durga.
Maurvi d/o asur Mur wants to take revenge on Krishna for killing her father. She marries Ghatotkach s/o Bhima. They get a son Barbarik(Suryavarch),whom Murvi takes to Navdurga at Guptakshetra Sangam and prays.
Barbarik gets a boon of invincibility except for an Avtar of Vishnu. He goes to Pandavas and challenges them, knowing that Krishna will also come there. In the war,Krishna severs his head with Sudarshan Chakra.Mata Durga appears and takes Suryavarcha to heaven where his consort Vishala is still waiting with a Garland.
Today’s song is very sweet, melodious and a lilting song. I feel this tune is inspired by a similar sounding song, ” Hum tum yeh bahar, dekho rang laya pyar, barsaat ke mahine mein” – a duet of Rafi and Lata, composed by Ghulam Mohd,MD, for film Ambar-52.

Today’s song is from the film Toote Khilaune-54. It is produced by N.Mehta, directed by Nanabhai Bhatt and the music Director is my favourite – Chitragupt. The cast of the film was Shekhar, Purnima, Gulab, Ranjeet Kumari, Master Romi, Babu Raje, a dog called Ginger and Guest artiste Asha Mathur.
This was a typical family film, involving a too much interfering Mother in law, a foster son and a loving step mother. The decade of the 50s was a period when the film makers were trying their best to give something to everyone. Films of almost all Genres were made in this decade. This decade was a Bridge Period between the old style music and the film making and the New Age films and the Music.
Sadly, the melody in Music had died a slow death, along with the phased exit of composers of the 40s and the 50s. Though emergence of New Age music makers kept the country on par with the changing world tastes, the Music, in particular, suffered the demise of melody and sweetness in film music. Earlier too, songs were inspired by foreign tunes, but the new age music based on foreign tunes was more noisy and instrument dominant, rather than the melody of tunes and singing styles. The 1959 film ‘ Dil deke dekho’ heralded loudly the coming of new age music from then on.
One can not blame the music makers alone, because not only the tastes of audience were changing, but also a whole new generation of producers, directors, actors, singers and composers was replacing the older one step by step. No change takes place overnight. One always gets the warning signals well in advance. Change is inevitable. Either accept change or perish !
Music composers from the 40s and 50s did survive in the 60’s decade, but they were relegated to B and C grade films. Very few composers remained A grade even in 60 or the early 70s. Ultimately, they had to give way to new music. This change was seen as the ” end of the Golden Period” of film music.
Cases like that of Chitragupta and others of his ilk were different. They operated long time but never became A grade. However, it was to their credit that even then, they composed melodious songs which delighted lovers of good music. That is why I like Chitragupt songs. Pick them up from any film and you will not be disappointed as far as melody and good tunes are concerned.
Songs of Toote Khilaune-54 are no exception. Songs were very sweet. There were 8 songs (this was another change that took place in the 50s onwards. Now films had songs less than 10 on average- unlike 10 to 15 songs in 40s and 15 to 20 songs in the 30s). 3 songs are already discussed here. Today’s song is 4th song. This is a duet sung by Chitragupt and Shamshad Begum.
From the cast, I have written about Shekhar and Purnima in my earlier posts. The 3 odd names appearing in the cast are Gulab, Ranjeet kumari and Asha Mathur. Ranjeet kumari’s name was Ranjit kaur. She was a sikh from Punjab. She acted in only 8 films, from Matwali Meera-40 to her last film Toote Khilaune-54. She got married to actor Ramsingh and moved with him to his village in U.P. to become and remain a housewife till her last day.
One of the few educated actresses of her times, Asha Mathur (Sohan Singh in real life) studied up to B.A. Both Asha Mathur and Bina Roy were introduced by Kishore Sahu in Kali Ghata (1951). While Bina Roy was relatively more successful among the two and did some memorable movies including Anarkali (1953) and Taj Mahal (1963), Asha Mathur was relegated to obscure mythical and costume films including Alif Laila (1953), Rajyogi Bharthari (1954), Malka-E-Alam Noorjehan (1954), Amar Kirtan (1954) etc because of her lackluster performances. Her most memorable role was in Poonam (1952), as a suffering wife of Ashok Kumar. She married famous director of her times Mohan Sehgal and left films. She acted only in 18 films. Her last film was Taqdeer-58.
Asha Mathur is a forgotten name today except for the few popular songs picturized on her – Humsai na poocho koi pyra kiya hai (Kali Ghata, 1951) and Baanki adayein dekh na ji dekh na(Amanat, 1955).
One of the beauties of old films was Gulab. The First actress form Kashmir to work as a Heroine in Hindi films was GULAB. Her real name was Saraswati Devi. She was born on 10-6-1908 at Jammu. She joined Krishna Film Company in 1924. Her first silent film’Krishna kumar’ came in 1925. She worked in 60 silent films. Her last silent film was ‘Dagabaz Dushman’-32, made by east India Film co.Bombay.
Her first Talkie film was Suryakumari-33, made by Vishnu Cinetone. It was directed by Dhirubhai Desai. She sang one song ‘more preetam jab ghar aaye’ composed bu Kikubhai Yagnik. Then came Baburao Patel’s ‘Bala Joban’-34, Sewa Sadan-34 and Nai Duniya-34 ( Debut film of Rajkumari and Jayant). In this film Gulab sang 2 songs.
Gulab was very beautiful and quite popular in film industry. Some of her films were Bambai ki sethani-35, Challenge-37, Bharosa-40, Pyas-41, Ek Raat-42, Station master-42, Gaali-44, Rattan-44, Mann ki jeet-44, Mirza Sahibaan-47, Lahore-49, Badi Behan-49, stage-51, Post Box 999-58, Chhabili-60 etc etc. She acted in 160 films. Her last film seems to be Haqeeqat-64. She also sang 22 songs in 11 films.
The story of film Toote Khilaune-54 , as found on Cineplot, is…..Pragati Pictures’ “Toote Khilone,” premiered at the Roxy Theatre on March 19th, 1954 is produced by N. Mehta and directed by Nanabhai Bhatt and it is a very good film based on a story-idea whose truth and simplicity invest it with an irresistible appeal.
The deeply moving and very human story, sensitively enacted by Shekhar, Purnima, Asha Mathur and little Romi, tells of a little child and his bewildered sorrow in the midst of domestic troubles.
Written by Akhtar Mirza, the story centers on a young married couple and their little son who dotes on his mother’s cousin, Sheela. When the mother dies of cancer, Sheela stays on to look after the little boy and eventually marries his father.
Trouble arrives in the shape of Sheela’s mother who moves into the happy household and builds up in her daughter a resentment against the child. The poisonous insinuations of the older woman turn Sheela into a confused and bitter foster-mother, but kindness and love triumph when the heart-broken child runs away. The film reaches a cleverly presented climax in which Sheela and her husband find the child safe and all three happily return home.
Playing his role with restraint and sympathy is Shekhar who puts over a fine performance as the boy’s father. His portrayal of a man who marries a second time so that his child may have a mother is quite flawless.
As the young wife, Purnima is superb. Hers is a natural and convincing performance, done with a fine understanding of the role.
A superb performance comes from Romi, as the little boy caught up in a web of circumstances he cannot understand. He is utterly lovable and, together with the wonderful canine star, Ginger, he walks away with the picture’s honors.
Gulab turns in another one of her brilliant cameos as the interfering mother-in-law, and Asha Mathur gives an appealing and warm interpretation of the tragic role of Shekhar’s wife.
The fine supporting cast is headed by Ranjit Kumari and Babu Raje who provide the comedy relief as the kind, devoted servants.
Gay and appealing dances punctuate the story, and the songs, with the music composed by Chitragupta, are melodious.
“Toote Khilone” is a charming film, well directed and acted, with polished production values and excellent sets, decor and photography.
Let us now enjoy the melodious duet of Chitragupt and Shamshad Begum from film Toote Khilaune-54.

ASAD 10th Anniversary Celebrations – 20
———————————————————————
And now, continuing the saga of the 10th anniversary celebrations. 🙂
First off, thanks to Mahesh ji for announcement that “The last batsman is in”. Quite true, and well, almost. One reason (of the many excuses that I am going to converse about today 🙂 ), is that, quite truly, I was waiting for at least one more contribution to land in, before I announce the closure of celebrations. But as the events transpired, I realized that waiting for that article would probably be like waiting for Mr. Godot.
I refer to Ben Kayti, who has promised me that she will be sending in a write up, but then – well, days have just been following one after the other. In an earlier communication she mentioned that she was little down in health, and that she has a doctor’s appointment. And then – silence. One day, two days – messages on WhatsApp, emails, phone calls, voice mail remained unanswered. When no response came, I had no option but to press the panic button. I tried to contact three other people in the family. And finally, her daughter-in-law responded to my SOS. The family is out to a vacation – Glacier National Park in Montana, where no connectivity is available. The vacationers also include the other two members of the family who I was attempting to get in touch. So it was a relief to know that all was well, and also somewhat vexing that there was a communication gap that created some worries. I will return to this and tie up the loose end left here, and continue with the mainstream of celebration.
‘19’ seems to be a lucky number for me. Quite a few significant things in my life are connected with this number. And thus, not surprisingly, I get connected with this blog that celebrates its birthday on 19th July. And then, more, I was not planning it to be so – my (previous) post comes at 19th in the series. Ah yes, as Atul ji has mentioned often, there is a hand of providence with what goes on with this blog. And let me add one more very interesting ‘19’ phenomena. As per the statistics that the WordPress maintains, the date which has had the highest number of visitors on this blog (10,630) is also a 19 – 19th October, 2011.
On 14th January this year, the visitor’s ticker on our blog home page turned into an 8 digit number for the first time. We clocked in 10 millionth visitor that evening (IST) – and it translates to 1 crore, in domestic terminology. As I write to complete this article, the ticker has already gone past 10 million 6 hundred thousand, clocking in on average ~ 3,000 visitors per day in this year so far. I would like to give it a name today – this presence that ASAD makes on the worldwide web – it is the “ASAD Phenomena“. Nowhere else probably (once again, as far as I am aware) is there any such endeavour that combines the interests and the determination of such a like-minded team with such dedication, to sustain such a significant level of interest in the central theme of this blog. All I can say is – there are music lovers in this world, and then there are ‘music lovers’ in this world.
Looking back at my association, the date was 1st October 2010 when I clicked on the subscribe button for getting the RSS feed and became a regular reader-member of this blog. And guess, what is the first song feed that arrived into my mailbox next day (on 2nd October) – “Ham to tere dil ke bangley mein aanaa maangtaa”. Now that I read this song title, I wonder whether it was a message intended for me from Atul ji, or was it supposed to be from me to Atul ji. 😀 😀 Whichever way, I think it just worked out very famously. 🙂
My first step into lyrics contribution was published on 1st Feb, 2011 and it is the famous Suraiya song from ‘Bilwamangal’ (1954) – “Parwaanon Se Preet Seekh Len”. And then it just went on from there. The first post written by me appeared on 18th Feb, 2011, a song from the film ‘Gul e Bakaavali’ (1963) “Ye Kehdo Tumhe Hamse Kyaa Chaahiye”. Missed the 19th by just a day, although there is a post on the 19th Feb also, my second one. And then it just went on from there.
कुछ लगता नहीं के सात साल गुज़र गए। Seriously, it seems just like last week or last month. In that very year (2011), in the subsequent months, we had a spectacular event on the blog, something of the type that has not yet been repeated. An event that truly marks this blog to be a Phenomena. Starting on 28th June, 2011, the blog saw an unbroken series of articles on the great KL Saigal Sb, that lasted all the way up to 18th Sep, 2011. The last song of this unbroken series, posted on 18th Sep is “Baalam To Pe Sabar Padey” from the film ‘Parwaana’ (1947). I quote a brief paragraph from that write up here,
With this post, I have now published 61 posts on Saigal Saab’s songs. In one of the interim emails, Atul ji wrote to me that every day morning, he eagerly opens his mailbox to look for an email from me. And the eagerness and urgency was no less on my side. Some of the ghazals took anywhere from 3 to 6 hours to complete the write up, with the translations and commentary to my satisfaction. There have been nights when I have sent the write ups to Atul ji at 2 am, 3 am and even past 4 am. There have been occasions that (after having fallen asleep on my laptop) I got to complete the write up later in the morning; you can identify these days by noting the delay in posting the Saigal Saab song for the day.
What a heady time it was. That endeavour was really worth it. We enjoyed it immensely, and it came to a monumental conclusion of documenting and posting each and every one of the available Hindi / Urdu recordings made by the great singer. And truly, nothing comparable to that has again been attempted on the blog so far.
One more reason that I quote this above paragraph from the earlier write up. Something of this relates to the song in this post. I will return to it again, shortly. But yes, I am talking about the relentless tempo with which this blog continues to progress. The support and participative contributions from the entire team are without doubt the bulwark that provides the strength to the arms and shoulders of what this blog is. But then the definitive power of this entire effort is the unflagging dedication and persistence of the leadership from Atul ji, which is truly the backbone of this effort. It is an accomplishment sans pareil anywhere in the annals of the history of blogging on the internet related to Hindi Film Music.
So, beyond September of 2011, although now done with all the available songs of Saigal Saab, the journey and the saga still continued. Century milestones came with their regularity, then the 5,000th song – “Hamen To Loot Liyaa Mil Ke Husn Waalon Ne” (dated 13th Nov, 2011), more centuries of artists and other interesting statistical achievements. Then on to the 10,000th song – “Phul Rahin Belariyaan Dolen” (dated 20th July,2014), an extraordinary song published first time anywhere on the net, a song of 1931 vintage posted; and the unprecedented organized effort wherein all regular members of the group contributed a post that contains an introduction of another member. And a memorable long afternoon spent by almost the entire group connected on email, as we all waited for the post to appear on the blog.
On and on, tirelessly, doggedly – getting to honky-tonk posts at the nos. 11111, 12345, 12357 . . .
Then we came to the post no. 13182 – “Aag Lagi Shola Uttha Shamma Pe Parwaana Gira”, on 22nd April last year. It was the mostest of the most momentous celebrations, the 10,000th post by dear Atul ji. It was a surprise for Atul ji; he was under the impression that his 10,000th milestone was already past. But that was not the case. The entire group got together and gave him a standing ovation that verily resounded across the internet.
The next big whopper for our blog came on 14th Jan earlier this year, and its celebration was covered in post no. 13921 “Bhalaai Duniya Ki Jo Subh O Shaam Karte Hain” – the visitor ticker on the blog had turned from nine million, nine hundred ninety nine thousand, nine hundred ninety nine to ten million, sometimes in the late evening of 14th Jan (IST). In desi parlance, we would say निन्यावे लाख, निन्यावे हज़ार, नौ सौ निन्यावे से हम एक करोड़ पर पहुंचे। Once again, this was a major, major occasion for the blog, and the echoes reverberated once again around the globe – literally. 🙂
And now, greetings (balated) for the date of completing 10 years since this blog’s creation by Atul ji. The date is 19th July (and I am late, of course, as usual – I have a reputation to protect and uphold, you know 😀 ). As per the Wikipedia articles, celebrations calendars and other related details available online, the tenth anniversary is represented by tin or aluminum. The color of this anniversary is blue and / or silver. And the gift of this 10th celebration is diamonds. Whooo. . .
Note that 10 is another interesting number on our blog recently – 10,000th post on blog, 10,000th post by Atul ji, 10 millionth visitor on the blog, and now the 10th anniversary of the blog itself; the last three events listed happening within the period of past 16 months. You simply just cannot cease to keep celebrating on this blog. And the wonder of wonders is that we also continue to trace and share absolutely wonderful celebration songs to go along with the event. The patterns that we conjured up for the post nos. 11111, 12345 and 12357 are quite an interesting phenomena in as of themselves, with the ”hand of providence” playing its fair share in making them happen. 🙂 For those who may not be familiar with these stories, I suggest they should view these posts – they are really very interesting tales of happenstance and coincidence. 🙂 Just click on the post numbers in the sentence above.
So, connecting back to where we started off. Finally last night (IST), the much awaited call from Ben Kayti and Jagdish Bhai materialized. It was a great relief to hear their voices, and to be assured that all is well. The planned vacation had gone on very well, and quite “frigidly”, given that the vacation spot chosen was the Glacier National Park in Montana (USA). After returning from there earlier this week, they also had some guests visiting and so Khyati Ben was completely busy with family affairs. She has once again promised that she will write a post this coming week now. I decided not to wait any further and put up the 20th post in this series today. If and when her post comes along, it will be now at an auspicious ‘पायदान’ of 21. 🙂
Amongst others in the list of my ‘reasons’ (excuses) is of course that I was also in travel during some of this intervening period. In fact most of the early posts in the 10th anniversary series were actually posted while I was on the move. Getting back home, I almost immediately got busy with celebrations for Guru Purnima at my Guru ji’s place. There, the celebrations last for 5 / 6 days, starting from the Guru Purnima day and continuing till the ‘पंचमी’ in the month of ‘सावन’. So that occupied me for almost a whole week within which I was not able to accomplish much as far as the blog activities are concerned.
Another thing was the song selection. Till almost the last hours of posting my previous article – “Dil Chaahta Hai” – I had no idea what would be the songs I am going to write about. The first song I finally zeroed in was this one. Going by a set of very good celebration songs posted by other friends in the group, I was thinking – most of these songs are of recent origin. How about searching for a similar celebration cum group dance song from the earlier decades? After sifting through many possibilities, I picked up this song from the film ‘Tarang’ of 1952. First of, this song has four singers – Rafi Sb, Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begum and Chitragupt himself. Secondly, the song (no video available) gives a feeling of a gypsy camp by the banks of a river, where a group dance cum song is being performed.
So actually, this song was originally planned to be the earlier post. But then, in random process, I bumped into the “Dil Chaahta Hai” song, and with some contemplative considerations, my planned post got converted into two posts. And good that it did. If I would have combined both these posts with one song – well. . . 🙂
So here is a fabulous celebration song which promises that the proceedings are going to last all night, and that all are invited. And the best part, this song starts with mentioning the word ‘सावन’.
So let me now take just a couple of more minutes to link in ‘सावन’ (saawan) with this celebration. You are going to love this. After having posted all the posts received from the group, and with Atul ji’s post also in place, I started to get individual messages from members of this group, asking me about the delay as to why my post was not coming in. And me, I was without an answer; what to tell – that I have not yet identified the song even? Well, as part of this set of messages, I get this fond message from Atul ji himself on 26th or maybe 27th July, wherein he prodded me to publish my post on the 28th. Reason, he explained, was that 28th July this year is the start of the month of ‘सावन’. And back, in 2008, when this blog got initiated, the date 19th July was also the start of of the month of ‘सावन’. I was really wonderstruck. I had never made this wonderful connect before. Wow, this blog is born in the month of ‘सावन’ – ‘सावन – मन भावन’, and not just the month, on the first of the month. Now this is really auspicious. I can go on now connecting many more things, along with this connect. . . but maybe not. Goodness, there are hundreds of songs in Hindi films that have the word ‘सावन’ in the mukhda. So I will move on by saying that this blog is blessed – for it is born in this auspicious month, showering sprinkles of delightful music in drizzles of melodious songs, one after the other. Oh sure, yes, this blog is a ‘सावन’ born. 🙂 Without any doubts. I am glad Atul ji highlighted this point to me, and that now we know what songs to post in the future, when the blog’s birthday comes along. 🙂
Coming back to this film and this song. I got the set of songs of this film from my collector friend. This film has some very wondrous songs, ten in all, eight of which are penned by IC Kapoor, and one each by DN Madhok and Ram Murti. This song is written by Ram Murti. The music composition is by Chitragupt, who has also lent his voice to two of the songs in this film, including this one. The blog already carries 5 songs from this film, and I promise you, the best of the songs are still to come. Just like this song today. It is such a joie de vivre expression of gaiety and celebration. The tempo is so sweet and so infective, that you will be swaying with the beat. When I heard this song for the first time, well, quite a while back now, I was simply bowled over by it. And even now, having heard it so often, whenever I play it again, I simply am not able to get over it.

Just listen to this song, and I assure you that at the end of the play, you will feel so un-satiated that you will be playing it again and again.
In some ways, this song also expresses my connect with the blog. Earlier in this article, I had mentioned a quote from the earlier posted last article in the KL Saigal series. So that is the connect here. Practically all my work for this blog happens in the dead of the night and in the wee hours of the morning. This is also mentioned in the quoted paragraph above. Even beyond the Saigal Sb series, my mode of working on the tasks related to this blog has not changed. All the posts that you see getting on to the blog at 7 am and 9 am – all these posts have been worked on and completed the previous night at times like 2 am and 3 am. 🙂
A very happy 10th birthday to ASAD; a ton of congratulations to Atul ji, and all the dear friends and co-passengers on this musical bandwagon. The saga continues. . .
