#the Decade of Fourties – 1941 – 1950 #
————————————————————————

The song being presented with this post is from the movie ‘Dukhiyaari-1948’.

This movie had made its debut on the blog on 13.08.2014, and so far only five songs from this movie have been posted on this blog. Considering that this movie has twelve songs as mentioned in HFGK Vol-II (1941-1950) we are a long way off from getting all songs of this movie on board here on the blog. It is also quite possible that a few of the songs may not be available.

“Dukhiyaari-1948” was directed by D.K. Ratan for ‘Jeewan Jyot Kala Mandir, Bombay’. It had Surendra, Trilok Kapoor, Meena, Ranjeet Kumari, Kuckoo, Chaand Burq, Majnu, Bhudo Advani, Ramesh Mehta, Chandramohan and others.

As mentioned above this movie has twelve songs written by F.M. Kaiser and composed by Gyan Dutt.

Five songs as mentioned below have been posted earlier on the blog. The last one was posted on 14.09.2017.

A song from this movie is appearing after a gap of more than five years.

HFGK mentions the singer’s name as Sulochana Kadam, (however one of the links of this song mentions the singer as Paro Devi).

Only the audio of the song is available.

Let us now listen to the song sung by Sulochana Kadam. Lyrics are by F.M. Kaiser and music is composed by Gyan Dutt.

Song-Duniya mein gareebon ka nahin koi thhikaana (Dukhiyaari)(1948) Singer-Sulochana Kadam, Lyrics-F M Kaiser, MD-Gyan Dutt

Lyrics-

duniya mein gareebon ka nahin
koi thhikaanaa
duniya mein gareebon kaa
haan aa aa
duniya mein gareebon ka nahin
koi thhikaanaa
duniya mein gareebon kaa

dil dard se bhar aaye to
dil dard se bhar aaye to
aansoo naa bahaanaa
haan aa aa
duniya mein gareebon ka nahin
koi thhikaanaa aa
duniya mein gareebon kaa aa

hanste hain gareebon ke ae
tadapne pe ye dhanwaan
taqdeer ke maaron kaa
sadaa hota hai apmaan
izzat ke liye jaan tak
kar dete hain qurbaan
izzat ke liye jaan tak
kar dete hain qurbaan
dhanwaanon ki duniyaa hai ye
nirdhan ke hain bhagwaan
nirdhan ke hain bhagwaan
ab in gareebon ki prabhu
tu hi laaj bachaanaa aa
haan aa aa
duniya mein gareebon ka aa

dar dar ki khilaati hai
inhen thhokren kismat
har ek qadam par hai
khadi ?? museebat
raah bhi inhen dekh ke
ban jaati hai aafat
raah bhi inhen dekh ke
ban jaati hai aafat
toofaan ko pedon se hai jab
jab toot’ti himmat
jab toot’ti himmat
kaam aataa nahin waqt pe
apnaa ya begaanaa aa
haan aan aan
duniya mein gareebon ka nahin
koi thhikaanaa
duniya mein gareebon kaa aa

Today’s song is a Special song having a Historical Value. It is from the film Andhon ki Duniya-1947.

There is a solid reason why I am calling this song a Special song with Historical value. Every singer has a First song in his career. For an ordinary or a less famous singer this First song has no problem, but in the case of an established, famous, Popular and for one who has sung in several languages, the First Song has many cousins. First song means which song ? Is it the First recorded song, or the First released song, or First song in any language or First song in Hindi Film or First song filmed on the singer on screen or the First Playback song in Hindi film or a First song as NFS or a first solo song ?

Usually, for the popular, famous and multi-Language singer all the above varieties of ‘First Song’ are applicable. For the major singers like Mohd. Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Talat Mahmood etc or Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begum, Amirbai Karnataki, Zohrabai etc, the Hindi Film music lovers have already found out the various types of their ‘First Songs’. However, an important rule for any History – be it National History, Film history or Music history – is that the facts available today are only Correct till a new evidence is discovered and the Correct Fact of today is gone to accommodate the New fact.

Such things have happened in case of ALL major singers of Hindi films and now in cases of most singers the Facts are almost final for their songs. OR IS IT ?

Now, this is where today’s song which is a Special song with a Historical value comes in. In the case of the famous, evergreen and versatile singer Asha Bhosle, till today, her First Hindi film playback song was considered as “Saawan Aaya” from film ‘ Chunariya’-1948, but now new evidence has come to the fore which clearly proves that her First Hindi Film Playback Song is from film “Andhon ki Duniya”-1947. This is also a chorus song (like the Chunariya song, with 4 singers), in which the singers are Asha Bhosle, Zohrabai, Manmohan Krishna and Krishna Goel (as confirmed by film music historian shri Girdharilal ji Vishwakarma ).

This “New Fact” is confirmed after a video of an interview of Asha Bhosle, taken by shri. Vishwanath Sachdev, famous author and the ex-Editor of magazine Dharmayug appeared. In this video, Asha Bhosle herself confirms that her FIRST PLAYBACK SONG is from the film ” Andhon ki Duniya”-1947 and NOT the Chunariya song. This is an interview of 1993-94 period. Recently, this video appeared on the RMIM forum and senior members Pavan ji Jha and Girdharilal ji Vishwakarma provided all the details along with an MP3 recording of the song. So, out goes Hansraj Behl ji and in comes Vasant Desai ji as the composer of Asha’s First Hindi Film Playback Song !

Film Andhon ki Duniya-1947 was made by V. Shantaram’s Rajkamal Kalamandir Ltd. Bombay. It was directed by Keshavrao Datey. Keshavrao was a famous actor of early Marathi and Hindi films. He acted in 16 Hindi films, starting with film Pratibha-1937 and ending with Navrang-1959. Earlier, he had also directed another Hindi film- Kisi se na kehna-1942. Keshavrao Datey died on 13-9-1971 at the age of 82 years. His role of Rajguru in the Marathi film Amrit Manthan-1934 had become very famous. This role was done by Chandra Mohan in the film’s Hindi version. This too was famous.

The film’s Music Director was Vasant Desai. The cast was Leela Chitnis, Manmohan Krishna, Munawwar Sultana, Parshuram, Mahipal, Gulab and many others. Today’s song is mentioned in HFGK, but without names of singers or the Lyricist, though luckily the Record number is mentioned. One of the singers of this song is Manmohan Krishna, whose face can not be forgotten due to his bushy thick eyebrows. When this highly educated actor/singer joined the Hindi films, in his 2 early films, he was the hero, but soon he became a character artiste.

MANMOHAN KRISHNA was born on 11-8-1908, at Lahore in Punjab. He was a very studious person and always stood first in school. He completed his M.Sc. in Physics and started working as a Physics lecturer in a Lahore college. He was very fond of singing and also sang on Lahore Radio. Once when V. Shantaram visited Lahore, he heard Manmohan’s singing on stage and was impressed. Shantaram offered him the lead role in his forthcoming film, “Matwala Shair Ramjoshi”-1947, In this film Manmohan sang 6 solos and 3 duets with Zohrabai Ambalewali. However, his first song as a playback singer was in Shantaram’s film, ” Jeewan Yatra”-1946, under Vasant Desai’s baton.

In his career of more than 40 years, he acted in 183 films and directed 1 film – Noorie-1979. He also sang 24 songs in 8 films, namely Jeewan Yatra-46, Matwala Shayar Ramjoshi-47, Andhon ki duniya-47, Apna Desh-49, Afsar-50, Aaram-51, Railway Platform-55 and Shehar aur Sapna-1963. During his stay in Bombay, he anchored a Radio show ” Cadbury’s Phulwari” in the 50’s.

Manmohan Krishna was connected with Indian Peoples Theatre i.e. IPTA and acted in few of their dramas. Being an educated person, he was impressed with Nehruvian Secularism. He worked in films like Shehar aur Sapna by K. A.Abbas as well as the first Indo-Soviet film Pardesi-1957. He also got the Film Fare award for playing the role of Abdul Chacha in the film Dhool ka Phool-64. A song in this film ” Tu Hindu banega na Musalman banega ” shot on him, became very popular.

Being a member of the intelligentsia, he could not sell himself nor gel into the Hindi filmi world fully. He always fought against injustice. He established ‘ Yuvak Biradari ‘ for young Indians, which became a big organisation in due course.

He was a favourite of the Chopra Brothers and acted in most films made by them. Some of his famous films were Deewar, Trishul, Humraaz, Insaaf ka Tarazu, Joshila, Kanoon, Kala Pathar, Dhool ka phool, Waqt, Naya Daur etc. etc. He also worked in 12 Punjabi films. He was prominently spotted in any role due to his thick bushy eyebrows.

In Hindi films, he rarely got a hero’s role, barring few films, because of his ordinary look. He had no looks required for a Hero’s role in a commercial film, in those days. He was of course an excellent Character Artiste. Due to his nature, he kept away from Filmi parties and groupism. He had no real friends in the film industry. Manmohan krishna did not keep good health in his last few years and died at the age of 82 years, in Lokmanya Tilak Hospital, Bombay, on 3-11-1990.
( Based on some information from wiki, ‘Beete kal ke sitare’ by Shriram Tamrakar, muVyz, HFGK and my notes. Thanks to all.)

I thank my friend Shri Abhay Jain ji from the USA for providing this song and our friend Shri Sadanand Kamath ji for uploading it for me.

Let us now enjoy the chorus song, which brought the popular, versatile Asha ji into Hindi Film Playback singing….

Today’s song is from a comedy musical film – Laadli-49.

During the period 1947 to 1950, there was a spate of comedy and musical films. It was also in this period that Naushad and C Ramchandra played havoc with their music. Films like Bela,Daak Bungla, Do Bhai, Jungle mein mangal, Natak, Shadi se pehle,Shehnai, Gunsundari, Hip Hip Hurray, Khidki, Mera Munna, Suhag raat, Andaz, Badi Behan, barsaat, Ek this ladki, Mahal, Namoona and Patanga stirred the HFM from upside down and then up again !

For all other MDs, this period played a challenge to come up to their highest and best level to compete. MDs like Anil Biswas handled the situation with ease, with his musicals like Laadli and Lajawab. Film Laadli-49 was made by Variety pictures – owned by Anil Biswas and his wife Ashalata (Mehrunnisa Bhagat). It was directed by an old friend of Anil Biswas – J P Advani. However, he directed only 3 films of Anil Biswas – Veena-48, Laadli-49 and Lajawab-50.

Jagatrai Pesumal Advani was born on 17-5-1903 in Hyderabad ( Sindh ). After graduating, he studied film making in Germany in the 1920s. After coming back to India, he joined Mohan Bhavnani – a big gun in those days- as his assistant. His first film as a Director was Heer Ranjha-1931. He shifted to Saroj Movietone in 1934 and then to Karachi to work for Golden Eagle Company. He was considered an expert who could handle the Heroines at his will.

He directed about 30 films, including a Hindi/Punjabi bilingual film Sassi-Punnu-46. His Filmography is- 1931: Heer Ranjha; 1933: Zehar-e-Ishq; 1934: Afghan Abla; Dilara; Gafil Musafir; Johar-e-Shamsheer; Tilasmi Talwar; Vasantsena; Flashing Sword; 1935: Bahar-e- Sulemani; Farebi Duniya; Shah Behram; 1936: Elaan-e-Jung; Shokh Dilruba; Sipahsalaar; 1937: Saqi; Insaaf; 1939: Dekha Jayega; 1940: Dharma Bandhan; Sneh Bandhan; 1941: Shehzadi; 1942: Suhagan; 1943: Sahara; 1946: Sassi Punnu; 1948: Veena; 1949: Laadli; 1950: Wafaa; Lajawaab; 1952: Saloni; 1954: Danka; 1955: Hasina.

The cast of the film was Sulochana Chaterjee, Jairaj, Kuldip Kaur, Ramesh Sinha, Randhir, Narbada Shankar and others. There was a coincidence that 2 Sulochanas acted in this film. Along with Heroine Sulochana Chaterjee, the old timer Sulochana Sr. (Ruby Myers) also acted in a side role. Born in Chandranagar, Sulochana Chatterjee was the daughter of a military man and the family, five girls, including the late Kamla Chatterjee ( she looked like Geeta Bali, and was Kidar Sharma’s wife), and one boy, used to travel along with their parents to wherever their father was transferred.
From Calcutta they moved to Jabalpore and it was here that Sulochana did her schooling. She also took an active part in school dramatics. After some time the family was transferred to Bombay and here her younger sister, Kamla, was spotted by Sohrab Modi, a friend of their father’s, and given a role as a child star in Modi’s picture Jailor (1938).

Once Sulochana happened to visit the sets one day and after watching her sister at work, She was offered a part in Harishchandra Pictures’ “Aina”-44, which she accepted. She was co-starred with Trilok Kapoor. She starred in scores of films after that, among them the comedy “Ladli”-50, in which she appeared with Jairaj, and “Grahasti”-48 which was a memorable hit and in which she played with Yakub and Masood.

Sulochana acted in two Bengali pictures “Apanaela”, produced by Saroj Mukerjee and directed by Benoy Banerjee with Pradeep Kumar as her leading man, and Benoy Banerjee’s “Minoti” in which she shared stellar honors with Smriti Biswas and Paresh Banerjee. Her well known films are Chaitanya Mahaprabhu-53, Rami Dhoban-53, Shahjehan-46, Veena-48, Nav Durga-53, Jagte Raho-56, Jis desh mein Gaqnga behti hai-60, Sarswatichandra-68 etc.

In all she acted in 119 films. Her first film was Shobha-42 and last film was Shabas Daddy-79. After retirement, she settled in Bombay. Sulochana Chatterjee died on 30-8-1999.

Her favorite pastime, was playing with her sister’s children. She cooked, too, and knitted off and on. She was fond of English pictures , liked Ingrid Bergman and Gregory Peck and comedies. Sulochana could play Badminton and drove a car. A gifted linguist, she knew Bengali, her mother tongue, Hindi, English, Marathi, Punjabi, Kutchi and Guajarati. She spoke them all fluently.

Film Laadli was a comedy musical. There were 5 Lyricists and the MD was Anil Biswas. In Hindi film industry, right from 1931 onwards, many composers from Bengal came to Bombay to try their luck, but only a few could make their name here. There was a host of small time Bangla composers (some of them were Big names in Bengal) came to Bombay for a while, did 2-3 films and went back. Few of them were Shoolpani mukherjee, S P Mukherjee, V V Ganguly, Niren Lahiri, Shivram Ghosh, A C Biswas, Bhishmadev Chatterjee, Sushant Banerjee, Robin Chaterjee, Naresh Bhattacharya etc.

Besides these composers, there were some less successful composers from Bengal, in Bombay, like Ashok Ghosh, Pannalal Ghosh, Robin Banerjee, Hiren Bose, Shyamal Mitra, Arunkumar Mukherjee and Manas Mukherjee. Their major problem was Language and cultural difference.

There were 4 major composers from Bengal, who succeeded here and etched their names in the HFM history. I call them A grade. They all operated at the same time during the Golden Age period. Two composers came from East Bengal-Anil Biswas and S D Burman. Two composers came from West Bengal-Hemant Kumar and Salil Chaudhari.

Anil Biswas was the first major composer from Bengal to start his career in Bombay in 1935, at the age of just 21 years, whereas S D Burman was the oldest having started his career in Bombay in 1946, at the age of 40 years ! The longest tenure was that of Salil Chaudhari, but his song total is the lowest, with an average of about 5 songs per film. This is much lower than the average of 8+ and 9 of the others. This may be, because in later part of his career Salil da gave music to many parallel films which had minimum songs.

The two senior composers were from the East Bengal and the two junior composers were from the West Bengal. The styles of these two groups were different because of the different pattern of Eastern and Western Bangla music. All four depended and used heavily from the folk tunes and Bangla songs, from their respective regions. Anil Biswas and Burman da drew heavily from the Eastern Bangla folk tunes and that is why sometimes their music had similarities.

A case in point is song – “Sundari O sundari” from Lajawab-50. It was based on a folk tune of East Bengal. By coincidence S D Burman too used the same tune and same Mukhda for his Bangla film, “Samar’-50. Not only this,S D Burman again used the same tune for a song in film ‘Munimji”-55 ( Anadi re Anadi).
Anil Biswas was hailed as one of the most original, revolutionary and experimental composer, even dubbed as “The Bhishma Pitamaha”of HFM.

He was original. When Anil Biswas came on the scene in the mid 30s, the Parsee Theatre music,Marathi Natya sangeet and Gujarati drama and Lok kala Sangeet was being followed in film music. He decided to change this pattern and used Robindra Sangeet and Folk tunes for his songs. He was Revolutionary because he introduced western instruments in his music as a routine, which no one had thought of,so far. He was experimental, because he tried a variety of singers.

Those days, when playback was not yet common, non singers sang songs and it was a terrible task to make them sing properly. Anil Biswas tried the First ever playback,in Bombay,in his film “Mahageet”-37,singing the playback song himself to be shot on Hiren Bose in the film.

In a span of 30 years and in his 86 films having 777 songs,he used 76 singers. Among his singers Lata stands at First rank with 120 songs. The second place is shared by Surendra and Meena Kapoor( naturally), with 44 songs. Next name is that of Anil Biswas himself, with 43 songs.

Going through the list of singers, one finds very unknown names like Omkar, Kamlakar, Kokila, Gajadhar, D.Manek, Tarachand, Devaskar, Madhav kale, Yusuf Effendi, Solanki and Swapna Sen. Except Madhav Kale and Yusuf Effendi,I have never heard the other names myself, nor have I read about them anywhere. It is likely that these singers were from the early era and his earliest films. He himself first sang in ‘Dharam ki Devi’-35 and his last song was in ‘Sautela Bhai’-62.

Today’s song is the 6th song of this film to be discussed here. The film had an all time immortal song by the Anil Biswas – Lata duo…”Tumhare bulane ko jee chahata hai….” Such fine songs are now only in memory. Today’s song is also a good song. This is a Chorus song. Anil Biswas was particularly fond of Chorus songs and his no film was complete without at least one chorus song. Now, enjoy this chorus song….

Today’s song is from the film Jungle mein Mangal-47. This was a stunt C grade movie made by Harishchandra Pictures. The film was directed by Baburao Badodekar- a name I heard for the first time. No wonder, because in those days, when stunt films were made by the dozen an year and at a cost of Rs. 30 to 40 thousand, getting quality directors for them was not possible. A seasoned Cameraman or an actor from even stage drama used to double as director of such movies for about 1 or 2 thousand rupees per film. The song writers used to get 10 to 15 rupees per song and unknown composers used to get lured by the prospect of seeing his name in the booklet, name in the film credits and about 2 or 3 thousand rupees per film.

Munshi Shyam was the Lyricist for this movie. Initially, I used to laugh at such hybrid names, but as the time went by I realised that the poets thought differently about their Takallus (pen name), probably considering it as an exclusive identity. Many Lyricists flaunted their hometown name with their Pen names- like Sahir Ludhiyanvi (Abdul Hai), Majrooh Sultanpuri (Asrar Hasan Khan), Arzoo Lucknowi (Syed Anwar Hussain), Anjum Jaipuri (Osman Khan Rehmani) etc etc.

This film’s music was by Nandram Omkar ji. he was the exclusive composer of Harishchandra Pictures and gave music to only 5 of their films, namely, Jungle mein Mangal, Barrister and Azad Jeevan-all of 1947, Sone ki Chidiya and Bahadur Jeevan of 1948. No other information about him as to where from he came or where to he went , is available. From the name, he seems to be a Rajasthani person. The cast of the film was Harishchandra Rao, Latika, Dalpat, Munshi Shyam, Balram etc etc.

After I started writing posts on old film songs, my outlook to the life changed completely. This world was something new for me. I was able to use whatever knowledge I had gathered over my past life span. Of course my diaries, which I was habituated to maintain after seeing every film seen, came very handy. Everything was going smoothly and one day something happened.

I was the Chairman of our Housing Society for over 10 years. Our recent Treasurer in our society was one Mr. Ramesh Advani. After we worked together for few years, one day he casually said that he was the son of Bhudo Advani-the yesteryear comedian. i was stunned. Even in my dreams I had not imagined that I would some day be in close contact with some actor’s close relative. I was excited and told him that I want to interview him, so that first hand information about his father can be put on Internet. He agreed and called his elder sister also and one full day I talked to them, making notes and selecting old photographs from their albums.

Soon the interview was posted on http://www.memsaabstory.com, a Blog site belonging to an American enthusiast and a lover of Hindi old films. The response was beyond my expectation. After this I became alert and grabbed all opportunities to interview close relatives of old actors. Without going into details of every instance, I can only say that I could interview daughter of Parshuram, son in law of Mirza Musharraf, grandson of early era stunt star Shankarrao Vazare, Son of Heroine Indurani, daughter of yesteryear Heroine Latika- among the few I have contacted and collected first hand information about the artistes concerned.

Ms. Cindy Bell, daughter of actress Latika (Heroine of today’s film also) reacted to one of my posts on this Blog, in which I had said that Latika was a Jew. Cindy wrote in her comment that Latika was not Jew etc. I got in touch with her- first by E mail and then by Phone ( she is in London). She sent Latika’s detailed information to me from London, where Latika was living in 2014, with her sons and daughter.

In the year 2014, I got in touch with Ms. Sindy Bell, daughter of Latika and a resident of London, U.K. Sindy was kind enough to provide me a brief note on her Biography. Latika had acted only in 13 films from 1944 to 1948.

” Latika was born 13th October, 1924 in Darjeeling. Her Tibetan name was Hungu-Lamou. Her mother was Tibetan. Her father was an Australian who adopted Buddhism, living in India as a race horse trainer for the Maharajas. He died when Latika was still very young leaving her with a newly born brother. As a child, Latika was sent to the Kalimpong girl’s orphanage also called ‘The Homes’ for her education by her mother and new step-father until she was 16. Her mother had four more children, her half-brothers and sisters.

The Homes (one for girls, one for boys) were founded by a Scottish missionary, so as a child, Latika was christened Agnes and this is the name she uses in England. Her mother was Buddhist, her step-father, an Anglo-Indian by the name of Webber, was a Protestant but Buddhism was the prevalent faith among her surrounding family of aunties and uncles in Darjeeling.

Latika’s step-father was an engineer who built bridges and due to his work, when she was a teenager, they moved to Mumbai. It was there that Latika made friends with a neighbour who was a kathak dancer and actress. She was invited to visit the Minerva film studios and was there spotted by the director Sohrab Modi and offered the opportunity to act. This was where she was given the stage name Latika, which she is still called by friends and family in India to this day.

In those days, all the scripts were in Urdu which she read beautifully and also learnt kathak dancing. I’m sure you already know the 12 films Latika acted in from the mid 1940’s to early 1950’s, in particular the film Gopinath with Raj Kapoor (1948), where she played the ‘femme fatale’ and her lovely dance sequence in Jugnu (1947).

Latika had always had a respect and interest in holy writings. It was during this period that she met a Jehovah’s Witness who was able to explain the bible, not as a church book, but as holy writings, it’s answers to the ‘big’ questions we all ask and it’s promised blessings. It satisfied all of Latika’s questions about life, so she became a Jehovah’s Witness.

It was while as an actress she met and eventually became friends with Gope at the studios. To this day, Latika says he was the kindest, most compassionate man she ever met. They married and, at Gope’s request, Latika retired from the film industry.

Latika did introduce Gope to the bible. He would read by himself (or as my mother would say, ‘exclaim in delight!’), passages from it, early mornings on the verandah before work. She said he was particularly taken with the accounts of Jesus and how tenderly he treated people. To her surprise, of his own volition, he too become a Jehovah’s Witness.

Gope had a large house in Juhu which also came to house all Latika’s family. When we saw it, it had became a hotel but I’m not sure what has happened to it now.

Before Gope’s death, they had two sons, Gope Jr, and Lalith. When Gope suddenly and unexpectedly died, when the boys were three and five, mum decided to join her siblings who had earlier migrated to the UK. I came from her second marriage.

Latika is still alive and very well and living in the UK. She is in her 90th year, still beautiful. My niece’s second name is Latika and Gope Jr’s two sons bear the (second) name of Gope also. Latika has a big family with grand-children and great grand-children, all from Gope’s lineage. ”

Harishchandrarao and Chandrarao Kadam- this brother pair of actor-producer-director was famous in the circle of stunt film crowds, both onscreen and off screen.

Hero of this stunt film was Harishchandra Rao (Kadam). He was born in Bhuj, Gujarat on 11-8-1910. He did early schooling in Bhuj, but his family shifted to Karachi, due to financial debacle. He did Cycle repairing work and completed his matriculation by age of 18 years. He joined a Touring film company. Once, while in Bombay he was watching the film shooting in Paramount company. Suddenly, the director offered him a role in the film. Thus he entered the films. from 1932 he did few silent films.

He joined Shankar Bhatt’s Prakash Pictures and worked in their first Talkie, ” Bambai ki Mohini “- 1934. He was with Prakash, upto 1939, doing stunt films inside and outside also. He did some films for Wadia too, in between. Finally he started his own company, ” Harishchandra Productions “. He continued to work as actor, director and producer. he sang few songs also.

Some of his films were Daulat, Naujawan, Rangila mazdoor, Rangila jeevan, Sukhi jeevan, Lehri jawan, Inaam, Sone ki chidiya, Durban, Laat sahib, Tamasha etc etc He worked in about 42 films.

His brother Chandrarao Kadam was also a stunt actor. He was known as Stunt King. He had his Chandrarao Films. He acted, directed and produced films. The brothers were friendly with Master Bhagwan and gave him preference in their films, till Bhagwan started his own company- Jagriti films. later on Chandrarao floated his own Chandivali Studio in Bombay suburb, which is still actively run by his progeny.

In the cast one finds the name Dalpat. Not much information was available about him. Here is what I found on Fb group ‘Vo din yaad karo’. This is written by shri M N Sardana ji. Thank you, sir for this bit of information.

Dalpat (Joshi) was also stunt artist . A tall, sophisticated and suave person mostly appeared in negative roles . Dalpat was a part of Wadia’s unit since its inception and played the role of villain in the stunt movies ,which used to have Fearless Nadia and John Cawas or occasionally some other hero, apt in performing stunts .

Owing to the unprecedented popularity of Miss Nadia , other film makers also cast her along with Mr John Cawas and Mr Dalpat in their similar type of stunt movies for which she was known . After her era was over ,Basant Pictures concentrated their energy in making Mythological and Arabian Night movies ,in which Dalpat Saab always had a role . Later in 50s, studio system came to an end and actors and technicians who learned their art from their benevolent master Homi Wadia , looked for assignment from other producers.

One may call it as destiny or lack of initiative on the part of Mr Dalpat Ram , he was offered only costume /stunt/religious movies by outside producers . Mr Dalpat ,who did a stint of production controller for few movies, was reverentially called Dalpat Kaka owing to his age ,seniority and status by film folks. Dalpat acted in 121 films, from Hoor e Baghdad-34 to Toofani Takkar-78.

Today’s song is one of the more rare songs, according to its up loader- our own Sadanand Kamath ji. He says, none of the songs from any of the films of Nandram Omkar ji are available on You Tube. So, this happens to be the first and the only song available on You Tube today. Thanks, Sadanand ji. This song is sung by an unknown Male singer with chorus. With this song, the film and the MD make their debut on the Blog.

———————————————————————-

Congratulations Atul ji for this unparalleled effort of ten thousand posts. You are truly an inspiration! We have a lot to learn from you and Thanks from the bottom of my heart for all that you do.

Today, I write this post with a gamut of emotions running through my mind. I still remember the year was 2008. A team of music lovers including me had got together and launched the website on www.geetadutt.com It had been a labour of love for us to make a digital temple dedicated to our beloved singer. We had spent countless hours discussing over the internet on what all should be put on the website and then doing the needful to make it happen. Our small team was very dedicated and the beauty of all of it was that we all had never met till then.
