2022 is marching and we are into March.
There are many actresses who have graced the silver screen eversince the moving images have held the fantasy of audiences. Some of these ladies began their on-screen life as ‘heroines’, a term used to denote the main female protagonist or the romantic interest of the main male in the story that the movie is depicting. That means the actress will be playing Seetha to a Ram, Parvati to her Mahadev, Radha to her Kanhaiya etc. if the movie was a mythological. If the movie was historical then a Rani Padmini, Rani Lakshmibai etc would be the main protagonist and the lady playing these characters would be called the heroine of the movie. The other ladies gracing the movie- playing Sakhi (friend), Maa, Didi, Bhabhi or Manthara, Kaikeyi, or a nautch girl- would be called supporting actress. No story (whether in movies or novels or real-life) is complete without supporting characters.
I know, there is no need for me to explain these terms -supporting cast, hero, heroine etc.- to regular movie buffs. But the person who is celebrating her 80th birthday today is one who was the first heroine of Rajesh Khanna- the superstar of the 70s.
She was born in Allahabad on 1st March 1942 to Dr. Jitendra Mukherjee and a homemaker mother- Kamini Devi. She was one of seven children i.e. she had four sisters and two brothers. (Allahabad also gave us a superstar. But more about that later).
We are talking of Indrani Mukherjee who made her debut in Bimal Roy Productions “Usne Kaha Tha” (for which she was given the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress) in 1960 which was followed by ‘Dharmputra’, ‘Grahasti’, ‘Haqeeqat’ which were the more notable initial films of this dainty Bengali beauty. In between she appeared as Dharmendra’s wife in ‘Shaadi’ which was a movie with Manoj Kumar as main lead. She was also seen in Manoj Kumar’s ‘Shaheed’ in 1965. That means she was decently active in the 60s and “Aakhri Khat” by Chetan Anand saw her play Rajesh Khanna’s love interest. We also saw her in a song where Sanjeev Kumar wooed her singing ‘tumhaari zulf ke saaye mein shaam kar doonga’.
Of course, I have not seen any of the films or songs that I have mentioned here other than possibly the song from ‘Grahasti’ when it appeared on Doordarshan ages back. Recently I discovered that the song “paayal ki jhankaar raste raste” has her dancing and decently too.
Possibly the first time I saw her on-screen was in Manmohan Desai’s “Chacha Bhatija” and “Parvarish” both in 1977. In one she played Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna’s mother and in the other she played Dharmendra’s bhabhi and mother to Randhir Kapoor.
I also remember her as Maharani Meenakshi in Desai’s “Dharam Veer” (1977) where she falls in love with a brave hunter, thinking him to be dead marries the crown-prince of some XYZ kingdom, gives birth to twins who are separated at birth etc. Indrani Mukherjee had a sizable screen time in this movie too where Jeetendra and Dharmendra played her sons.
Here I would like to point out that these actors, barring Dharmendra, were all in the same age bracket as Indrani and this is something that I have always had a problem with. Actors never age and the lady who once played his love-interest plays his mother, bhabhi etc a supporting character, I mean ladies get to play young characters for a shorter period as compared to gents. But that is not the point of this post. This post is meant to wish a healthy and happy 80th birthday to Indrani Mukherjee.
Let us have a song from “Chacha Bhatija”. It is a song and dance situation where we see Hema Malini playing a kind of ‘ojha’. Randhir Kapoor and Dharmendra (in disguise of course) have brought Sonia Sahni to the ‘ojha’ to get the spirit, of a supposedly dead Indrani Mukherjee, to leave her. We can also see the “permanently drunk” Keshto Mukherjee recording the proceedings, specially assigned to record Sonia’s confession. All in all a very entertaining song. And where does it come from?
From a Manmohan Desai movie of course, which was meant to relax the audience. His movies were the type where logic was conspicuous by its absence, the movies were fast-paced giving the viewer little time to think “what is happening!!!” The absence of logic is realized only on repeat viewing of these films. And all of Desai’s films have repeat value and are entertaining to the generations that were not even born back then.
Incidentally 1st March also happens to be Manmohan Desai’s anniversary, it is 28 years since his passing, he had just celebrated his 57th birthday.
Today’s song is by the team of Anand Bakshi-Laxmikant-Pyarelal-Asha Bhonsle. (I am not sure if it is the voice of any male singer for the words uttered by the two heroes)

We in this blog had two new resolutions and I had decided to stick to them as long as I can. One was to introduce a “new” movie daily and another was to to close the account of another movie by YIPPying it.
We are in may 2017, and both these resolutions have finally seen breaks. For instance, there was no YIPPEE song on 13 may 2017, a day that had only one post, a post that introduced a “new” song. The string on YIPPEE posts was in fact broken a few days earlier on 6 may itself when I posted a song that I thought was YIPPYing its movie but I was wrong. The “new” post string had got broken a while ago.
