Muhabbat ki kismat banaane se pehle

Posted on: September 26, 2012

“Malhar” (1951) was a Darling Films production. It was directed by Harish. The movie had Arjun Bakshi, Shammi, Moti Sagar, Sonali Devi, S K Prem, Sunalini Devi, Kanhaiyalal, Sankata Prasad etc in it.

As many as seven songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the eighth song from this movie. It is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Shammi. I request our knowledgeable readers to help confirm/ refute my identification of the lip syncing lady.

Shyamlal Shams in the lyricist. Music is composed by Roshan.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

song-Muhabbat ki kismat banaane se pehle (Malhar)(1951) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shyamlal Shams, MD-Roshan

Lyrics(Provided by Atif M)

muhabbat ki qismat banaane se pehle
zamaane ke maalik tu roya to hoga
muhabbat ki qismat banaane se pehle
zamaane ke maalik tu roya to hoga

tujhe bhi kisi se agar pyaar hota
agar pyaar hota
hamaari tarah tu bhi qismat ko rota
qismat ko rota
yeh ashkon ke mele lagaane se pehle
zamaane ke maalik tu roya to hoga
muhabbat ki qismat banaane se pehle
zamaane ke maalik tu roya to hoga

mere haal par yeh jo hanste hain taare
hanste hain taare
yeh taare hain teri hansi ke ishaare
hansi ke ishaare
hansi mere gham ki udaane se pehle
zamaane ke maalik tu roya to hoga
muhabbat ki qismat banaane se pehle
zamaane ke maalik tu roya to hoga

muhabbat ko tu ne dilon mein basaaya
dilon mein basaaya
muhabbat mein gham ka yeh toofaan uthaaya
toofaan uthaaya
yeh toofaan duniya mein laane se pehle
zamaane ke maalik tu roya to hoga
muhabbat ki qismat banaane se pehle
zamaane ke maalik tu roya to hoga
roya to hoga

You’re right, Atul-ji. It is Shammi indeed. Every song in ‘Malhar’ was a beautiful one. I’d read somewhere long ago that Mukesh had been the producer of this movie.

hi atul
u r right. it seems Shammi debuted with this movie

yes. imdb says that “Malhar” was her 1st movie. her birth name was Nargis Rabadi. she is Mani Rabadi’s(the fashion designer’s) sister

I saw Shammi’s picture somewhere recently. She had come to see special screening of ‘Heroine’ for heroines ‘ (that was the caption), with Asha Parekh and Waheeda Rehman.

She is still hale and hearty and kicking, touching may be 90. All her contemporaries have left her alone. She gets along Asha Parekh like house on fire.

she can’t be 90 Nitinsir. she has said somewhere that she was only 18 when she started. and Asha Parekh also says that they get along like a house on fire inspite of the 15 year gap between them. & yes they were there all over the newspapers & channels whole of last week after the Madhur Bhandarkar had a special screening of his “Heroine” for all these senior stars. seems Helen lead the pack of Waheeda rehmaan, Asha Parekh & Shammi aunty (as she is called)

As per her interview I quoted earlier, Shammi was born in 1929 and that makes her age to be 83.

As per Shammi’s interview in ‘Parsi Khabar’ in 2009, she said that it was in January 1949 that she entered the film industry and signed a 3 film contract with Shaikh Mukhtar. ‘Ustad Pedro’ was her first film she signed which was released in 1951.The lead actress in this film was Begum Para. ‘Malhar’ (1951) was her first film as a lead actress. Even though she was under contract with Shaikh Mukhtar for 3 films, she was permitted to act in ‘Malhar’ because Tara Harish was the director for both ‘Ustad Pedro’ and ‘Malhar’. However, I have no idea as to which one of these two films was released first.
