Today’s song is from a “special film”- Akashpari-1958.

I have called this film a ‘Special film’ for not so honorable reasons. This film was produced by S.P.Srivastav and M.S.Geete. It was directed by Mohan Sinha (grandfather of actress Vidya Sinha). The cast of the film consisted of Kusum Pradhan, Mahipal, Ram Singh, Maruti, Kamal (they were husband and wife in real life), Krishnakumari and many others.

There were 3 reasons why this film was different from other films. First – The Music Director of this film was Inayat Ali. During the second half of the 1940’s period, there were 3 composers having a similar name of Inayat. Inayat was a composer for an unreleased film of the 40s,’Basant Panchami’. There was Inayat Ali who composed music for film ‘Galat fahmi’-49 and Dilbahar alias Lachak in the 50s ( This is the film under our discussion today), and the third composer was Master Inayat Hussain who only composed music for a Punjabi film ‘ Kamli’ in 1946. Master Inayat migrated to Pakistan and became a highly respected, famous and very successful music Director there. It is not known whether all these Inayats were the same person or three different persons. Anyway, Master Inayat Hussain never claimed any Hindi film in India in his career here. So,obviously he is different. (Film Lachak-1951, featuring Geeta Bali and Amarnath is different altogether.)

Secondly – The whole film has a History. This film was originally made by Smart pictures with the title DILBAHAR alias LACHAK in July 1950. Its 8 songs, written by Anjum Pilibhiti and composed by one Inayat Ali were recorded in July-August-September-1950. This film, for some unknown reason, was not censored. Its Distributors Indian Republic Syndicate then sold it to Delite Films, Bombay. The new buyers changed the Title of the film to AKASHPARI and got it censored on 11-4-1958 and had it released. However the film was a classic flop and disappeared quickly. All the 8 songs recorded as Dilbahar were used in this film.

Thirdly and most importantly – This film was entirely a ‘Bakwas’ film. I remember having seen this film in Hyderabad. As was my habit, I had noted all the details of the film in my diary with one sentence, “how can anyone make such a film ?”. When you read the film story, you will get the answer why this question was asked.

The film’s 8 songs were sung by 6 singers, G M Durrani, Meena Kapoor, Shamshad Begum, Faiyaz Mehmood, Geeta Roy and Sulochana Kadam. Here is the story…

Ratna ( Kusum Pradhan) and Ramesh( Mahipal) were in love and consequently vowed to get married. Their joy was turned to sorrow when they found that their parents had already fixed their marriages, which they were not informed about. Ratna refused to fall in line with her father’s plans which excited him and he got a heart attack. Ratna had to give her consent to please her ailing father. When Ramesh learnt this he threatened to commit suicide. Ratna had to make a quick decision. She goes to bed with a heavy heart and an uneasy mind. Dreams take the form of reality….

Now the rest of the film takes place in her dream.

Ratna and Ramesh elope to Amarnath. There they saw a yogi sitting in Samadhi. Ramesh mocked him. The insulted yogi cursed him and reduced him to a very small height. Ratna’s father and Ramesh’s friend Chamak have followed them and when they come there and see Ramesh’s fate they take him to the Doctors but all in vain. Then Chamak and Ratna take Ramesh to America with a hope of curing him. Instead, Ramesh attracts the attention of an International gang of crooks who try to kidnap Ramesh. Ratna and Chamak fly to Burma where they are followed by the gang. She and Chamak escape in an aeroplane but as their luck would have it, their plane crashes and when they gain consciousness they find Ramesh missing. Ratna breaks into sobs and cries. . The yogi who has cursed Ramesh takes pity on her and gives her the power of flight. Ramesh has been carried away to the Dwarfland where the Princess( Krishnakumari) falls in love with him and proposes marriage and when Ramesh refuses she orders him to be slaughtered. Ratna who has got the power of flight comes with Chamak just in time to save Ramesh. From there she takes Ramesh to the moon in hope of curing him. Here also she is disappointed and flies to Venus, here the Queen promises to cure him to which Rahu-the commander- in- chief objects and when the queen refuses to listen to him he holds her captive, and tries to assault Ratna. Ramesh escapes un-noticed and rescues the queen who with her divine power restores Ramesh back to his normal height, Then Ramesh and the queen come to rescue Ratna.

Ramesh and Rahu have a fight in which Rahu is about to strike Ramesh, seeing this Ratna screams with a fright and wakes up to find herself in the arms of Ramesh who has come to give her the good news that it was they who had been engaged to one another, by their parents. The parents bless the couple and then they live happily ever after.
The audience too is happy and relieved that the film is over.

Here is some information on the film’s director Mohan Sinha….

Mohan Sinha was born on 2-12-1903 at Indore. He studied upto matriculation in Indore. His uncle was General Bhavnani Singh, who was in the Indore state army. With his help, Mohan got into the state army as a Lieutenant. However, he did not continue for long and left the army. In 1933, he started a film company at Indore-Navyug films. But due to lack of opportunities in Indore, it was closed soon.

Mohan came to Bombay, floated Krishna Films and made and directed a film ” Fashionable India”-35. It was a hit film and he got offers from Rajputana films,General Pictures, Circo and National. He worked with all of them. Sinha went to Calcutta and started Murli pictures. He made ” Swaraj ke sipahi”-37, which was a flop. He came back to Bombay and directed Industrial India-38, for General films. Then came Swastik-39, Laxmi-40,Anuradha-40 and Vanmala-41. He floated Murari Pictures in 1942 and made Badalti Duniya-43 and Krishnarjuna yudha-45 ( This film was appreciated by Dr. Rajendra prasad, Dr. Shamaprasad Mukherji, Veer Savarkar and Acharya kriplani also)

In 1946, Mohan Sinha directed K L Saigal in Omar Khayyam, Surendra in 1857, Raj Kapoor in Dil ki Rani-47 and Dev Anand in Jeet-49. Mohan Sinha directed, in all 32 films. He wrote lyrics for 62 songs in 7 films. His last film was Shaan E Hind-60. He died in 1984. Mohan Sinha’s granddaughter Vidya Sinha was an actress. Vidya’s mother was Mohan’s daughter and she died while giving birth to Vidya. From what I had read somewhere, Vidya’s father PRATAP RANA was so grief stricken that he refused to see his newborn daughter and it was Mohan who brought her up and named the little one after her Late mother VIDYA and even gave her his own surname.

Today’s song is sung by my favourite singer G.M.Durrani. Enjoy….
