Today’s song is the last and final song from the film Chand ki Duniya-1959.

The year of 1959 was an year when the musical field in Hindi films was almost ruled by 6 Male singers (Rafi, Mukesh, Talat, Manna Dey Hemant kumar and Kishore Kumar) and 4 Female singers (Asha, Lata, Geeta and Shamshad). Of course occasional singers like S.D.Batish, Subir Sen, Pradeep, Suman,Usha,Mubarak Begum, Sudha Malhotra, kamal Barot etc were also heard. But it was a complete domination of the few top singers. It was not because they were preventing others, but because they were such experienced, perfect and hard working singers who fulfilled the needs of all the Music Directors.

1959 saw the entry of Usha Khanna with ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ and Kalyanji-Anand ji debuted as a team with ‘Satta Bazar’. Kalyan ji had already composed music alone earlier. Sudha Malhotra composed just one song ” Tum mujhe bhool bhi jao” for the film ‘Didi’. Gulshan Bawra wrote his first film song ‘ Qaid mein hai bulbul’ for the film’ Bedard zamana kya jaane’.

After singing in the film ‘Navrang’ Mahendra Kapoor was on the rise. Some popular hit musical films of 1959 were Anadi, Ujala, Main nashe mein hoon, Goonj uthi shehnai, Dil deke dekho, Sujata, Insaan jaag utha, Kagaz ke phool, Dhool ka phool, Madari, Satta Bazar, rani Roopmati, Barkha, Navrang, kanhaiyya, Love marriage, Chhoti behan, Guest House, Kali topi laal rumal etc. Film Fare awards went to Anadi for M.D. (Sankar – Jaikishen), Lyricist (Shailendra) and the singer (Mukesh).

A Trivia of 1959 – when Vyjayantimala went on her European dance tour, her name was literally translated as “Miss Garland of Success”, written on the billboards and in the advertisements !

Film Chand ki duniya-1959 had the cast of Sohan Kapila, Nalini Chonkar, P.Kailash, Ram Avtar, Indira Bansal, Noor, B.M.Vyas and others. For actress Noor, it was her last film. Do you know who Noor was ? She was the wife of comedian Johnny Walker. Born on 21-7-1940, she was the second of the 3 sisters. The eldest was Shakila, then Noor and lastly Nasreen. All 3 sisters joined films, but Shakila was the most famous and had a longer career span than her sisters.

Noor debuted as the child star singing the famous song,” Udan khatole pe ud jaun’ in the film Anmol Ghadi-46. Along with her the other child artist debutant was M.Kabir ( later father of actress Sonam). Then came Dard-47. In both these films, she was credited with her real name, as Noor Mahal, but after this in all subsequent films, she was billed as Noor only. Noor acted in 16 films. They were Anmol Ghadi-46, Dard-47, khubsurat-52, Baghi-53, Do bigha zameen-53, Laila-54, Noor Mahal-54 ( In the name of the film Noor Mahal is hidden the name of an actress…NOOR.), khushboo-54, Aarpaar-54 ( singing Main na pyar karungi ), Naukri-54 ( as Kishore kumar’s sister, singing ‘ Chhota sa ghar hoga’ ), Mast Qalandar-55, Shahi chor-55, Sakhi hatim-55, Lutera-55, Heer-56 and Chand ki duniya-59. The last two films got delayed releases.

During the film Aarpaar-54, she acted in a very popular song,’ are na na na Tauba Tauba, main naa pyar karungi”, along with comedian Johnny Walker. Johnny fell in love with her and they got married in 1955. After marriage she stopped taking films anymore. The couple had 3 daughters and 3 sons. All 3 sons studied in the USA, all 3 daughters were married off before Johnny’s retirement from films. She stays in her bungalow, ” Noor Villa ” (as good as Noor Mahal !) in Andheri, Mumbai.

The story of the film Chand ki Duniya-1959 was (despite its 5 songs appearing here, the story is here for the first time)…..

Guiding his private plane through a mountainous region, Prince Badam (Sohan Kapila) and his servant Moti (Ram Avtar) make an emergency landing on an icy hillside. While waiting to be rescued they come across a group of beautiful maidens who are frolicking in the snow. Badam falls for the leader of the group, Chandrika (Nalini Chonkar), but learns that she and the others are from outer space, and must soon return to their lunar home.

Back in his kingdom, Badam orders a rocket to be built that will take him and Moti to the Moon so that he can see his sweetheart and bring her back to earth. At first he is welcomed by the Moon’s ruler (B.M. Vyas) as a friend, but a suspicious military leader (P. Kailash), decides that Badam is an enemy that must be destroyed. All his plans to kill Badam are foiled by Moti and the friends of Chandrika. Finally, Badam takes Chandrika and comes to earth.

So, here is the film’s last song. The film is now YIPPEED. Enjoy….

Song- Sachchi hai agar preet meri (Chaand Ki Duniya)(1959) Singer- Asha Bhosle, Lyricist- Qamar Jalalabadi, MD- Nirmal Kumar (S.D.Batish)

Lyrics

teri duniya ye samajhti hai
khataawaar hain hum
pyar duniya mein gunaah hai
to gunaahgaar hain hum

sachchi hai agar daata meri preet deewaani
sachchi hai agar daata meri preet deewaani
ulfat ki kasam aag bhi ban jaayegi paani
ulfat ki kasam aag bhi ban jaayegi paani
sachchi hai agar preet meri

hai pyaar agar paap to kyun pyaar banaaya
kyun dil mein mohabbat ka haseen dard jagaaya
hai pyaar agar paap to kyun pyaar banaaya
kyu dil mein mohabbat ka haseen dard jagaaya
kyu toone banaayi hai zamaane mein jawaani
ulfat ki kasam aag bhi ban jaayegi paani
sachchi hai agar preet meri

insaan ke seene mein ye armaan diye kyun
har lahar ke pahlu mein ye toofaan diye kyun
insaan ke seene mein ye armaan diye kyun
har lahar ke pahlu mein ye toofaan diye kyun
kyun pyar ka paigaam hai har raat suhaani
ulfat ki kasam aag bhi ban jaayegi paani
sachchi hai agar preet meri

gar tera ishaara ho to de sakte hain jaan hum
teri hi kasam hai nahin mitne ka humen gham
gar tera ishaara ho to de sakte hain jaan hum
teri hi kasam hai nahin mitne ka humen gham
gham ye hai na mit jaaye mohabbat ki kahaani
ulfat ki kasam aag bhi ban jaayegi paani
ho o o daata re
o o o daata re
o o o oo o daata re
aa aa aa aa daata re
aa aa aa aa daata re

So one more film gets YYIIPPEEEEd!
That is an interesting translation of VYJAYANTHIMALA- “Miss Garland of Success”
Recently, I saw a video on Youtube where Johnny Walker & Noor’s son Nasir Khan spoke about how his mother came to be “NOOR” in films. apparently her birth name was Noorjehan. She was cast in some film, as child actor, alongside Noorjehan (the singer actress) and to avoid confusion she was named Noor Mahal for that film. And that name stuck with her for life.
Unfortunately I am unable to locate that youtube video to post it here.

But the translation is incorrect. The correct translation would be “garland of vyjyanti flowers”. The translation thought vyjyanti= miss success. Vyjyanti is a flower.
