Today’s song is from the ‘1973’ movie ‘Raaja Raani’.

This is one of the movies released during ‘Rajesh Khanna era’ in Hindi movies.

I recall to have read that this movie was termed as un-successful or it was even considered as a ‘flop’ movie of its time. But times have changed now and considering various factors (economic) and the collections made by this movie then, this movie is now considered as a ‘hit’ or ‘successful’ movie of its time.

Here is what the Wikipedia page on Rajesh Khanna mentions about this movie now (in the section ‘acting career’ of Rajesh Khanna) –

“As per the review of Raja Rani written in 2014 by ‘The Hindu’ newspaper, the film did well at the box office and, taking into consideration the inflation as of 2014, the film would have grossed more than 100 crores. The attire worn by Khanna was a sleeveless shirt and trousers, thick leather belt, shoes without socks and a black cap.The Hindu review noted “On a lesser actor, the attire would have fallen flat, but Khanna, as a small time thief, carries it with characteristic élan.”

In 1973 Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore appeared together in the following movies (in alphabetical order):

Movie Title Director Lyricist/s Music Director Passed by Censor Board
Aavishkaar Basu Bhattacharya Kapil Kumar, Gyandev Agnihotri Kanu Roy 26.09.1973
Daagh Yash Chopra Sahir Ludhianvi Laxmikant-Pyarelal 30.03.1973
Raajaa Raani Sachin Bhowmick Anand Bakshi R.D. Burman 15.01.1973

Other than the above movies Rajesh Khanna appeared in ‘Namak Haraam’ with Rekha, then in a documentary made by BBC i.e. ‘Bombay Superstar’, and also did a guest appearance in a Telugu movie ‘Bangaru Babu’ (as mentioned on Wikipedia).

Sharmila Tagore appeared in ‘Aa Galey Lag Jaa’ with Shashi Kapoor in 1973 apart from than the three movies with Rajesh Khanna as mentioned above.

“Raaja Raani” was directed by Sachin Bhowmick. He was also the writer of this movie.

Sachin Bhowmick (17 July 1930– 12 April 2011) was mainly as a writer (story and screenplays) for many movies in Hindi. ‘Raaja Raani’ was the only movie where he had done the direction for a movie.

The producer of ‘Raaja Rani’ was Jagdish Kumar and it was presented by J. Omprakash.

‘Raaja Raani’ had Sharmila Tagore, Rajesh Khanna, Raj Mehra, Iftekhar, David, Suresh, Brahm Bharadwaj, Asit Sen, Altaaf, Naaz, Dulari, Praveen Pal, Ravikant, Madhup Sharma, Kanu Rai, Uma Dutt, Ratna, Ashok Saxena, Master Manoj, Master Chiku, Baby Subiya, Surender Shore, Indrani Mukherjee, V.K. Sharma (new discovery) and many others.

Dialogues of this movie were written by Ramesh Pant. Editing of this movie was done by Pratap Dave.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 15.01.1973.

This movie had seven songs all written by Anand Bakshi and composed to music by R.D. Burman.
Here is the list of songs this movie had.

SNo Song Title Singer/s Posted On
01 Phir aankh se aansoo barse Lata Mangeshkar
02 Haa… mere chehre ki taraf Lata Mangeshkar
03 Jaa re jaa maine tujhe Lata Mangeshkar
04 Main ek chor tu meri raani Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar 08.12.2017
05 Aasmaan pe chaandni ka Lata, Mukesh, Rajesh Khanna 21.10.2008
06 Naa tumse huyi naa hamse huyi Lata Mangeshkar
07 Jab andheraa hotaa hai Asha Bhonsle, Bhupendra, chorus 11.09.2009

(Two songs from this movie ‘Jab andheraa hotaa hai’ and ‘Main ek chor tu meri raani’ made it to the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of that year 1973 and they stood at number ten and twenty-one respectively.).

We can see from the above table that three songs from this movie have so far been posted on the blog. The movie made its debut on 21.10.2008 on the blog.

The three songs were also the most well-known songs from this movie. The others songs were not that popular and are lesser known songs. But they play their role carrying the movie forward according to the demands of the story.

Today’s song is one such poignant song filmed on Sharmila Tagore. It is a background song in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar. (We can also see one male and one female artist present in the picturisation of this song whom I am unable to identify.)

I have not yet watched this movie however today’s song (including others) and the following declaration in the voice of Rajesh Khanna, in the beginning of this movie, can give readers the idea of the story of this movie.

“This film is dedicated to those innocent victims of circumstances – The Fallens – who aspire and desire to rehabilitate themselves and become good citizens.”
More details about the story of this movie have been mentioned by Peevesie’s Mom ji in her post with the song ‘main ek chor tu meri raani’ posted on the blog on 08.12.2017.

Let us now listen to today’s song.

Song-Phir aankh se aansoo barse (Raja Rani)(1973)Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

phir aankh se aansoo barse
phir chhaayi ghataa ghanghor
likhne waalon se keh do
likhey ek kahaani aur
phir aankh se aansoo barse
phir chhaayi ghataa ghanghor
likhne waalon se kehdo
likhey ek kahaani aur

na kisi ko taras hi aaya
na kisi ko aai laaj
logon ne hanskar dekha phir
ek tamaasha aur
lo aasmaan mein kat gayi
lo aasmaan mein kat gayi
phir ek patang ki dor
likhne waalon se kehdo
likhey ek kahaani aur

phir ik aangan ki chhaaon
ban gayi parbat ki dhoop
phir ik gangaa ki mauj ne
badlaa madiraa ka roop
phir ik panghat ki raani
phir ik panghat ki raani
chal di marghat ki ore
likhne waalon se kehdo
likhey ek kahaani aur

kit jaaye ud kar panchhi
jiske na par naa ??
aur chaaron taraf shikaari
baithhe phailaaye jaal
is choron ki nagari mein
is choron ki nagari mein
har koyi roop ka chor
likhne waalon se kehdo
likhey ek kahaani aur
phir aankh se aansoo barse
phir chhaayi ghataa ghanghor
likhne waalon se kehdo
likhey ek kahaani aur

as per my observations, some audio links were plain copis of video link of the songs,
but the record company/label audio links usually includes addtional/extra preludes, musical pieces , extra stanzas, additional repetitions of lines, That`s why I give importance to audio links provided by record companies or labels( I hope I am right in my observations)
