Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Hum tumhen to kabhi na bhoolenge

Posted on: March 30, 2013

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

A little over three weeks ago, Kamal Barot’s first non film song was posted on these pages –“Ye Haseen Taare Teri Yaad Dilaa Dete Hain”. The post was followed with comments from readers, with requests for other non film songs from the same singer. The song in this post was specifically requested, as it had been by AK ji, in his earlier communications.

In the earlier post, I had written about the ‘expressive sadness’ of that song. The song that is uploaded today, is in a similar emotional genre, conveying remembrances of a dear relationship that was. The simple words of sadness, have been rendered so simply, with a touch of resignation resonating in the voice. The sound of Kamal Barot’s voice from maybe over four decades ago, seems so correct for the expressions of a young heart that still pines for a lost love.

As was the case with the previous song, I have not been able to trace more information about the poet and the composer of this song. I request other readers to please help to add more information.

Listen to this rare sound, resurrected again by the prompting of AK ji, Rajnikant Adhyaru and other readers. Enjoy.

hum tumhen to kabhi na bhoolenge
tum to apna banaa ke bhool gaye

O love,
Letting go and wiping away your remembrance
Is something I will never be able to
You may have forgotten
After having pretended to be mine

mere seene mein ab nahin hai dil
ye to koi mazaar-e-ulfat hai
tum wafaa se meri badal jaao
main kahoongi tumhi se ulfat hai

A heart no longer beats inside me
It is more a mausoleum of love now
You may forsake this bond of love
I will always maintain my love for you

pyaar se tum agar sadaayen do
wo gayaa waqt laut aayegaa
zindagi ki jawaan raahon par
phir bahaaron ka rang chhaayegaa

Ah, only if you would
Call out with love once again
The times that were
Will return once more
And the colors of spring
Will be dispersed again
On the paths of life
Forever young
Only if you would call again. . .

One of the distinguishing qualities of Kamal Barot’s singing is her forever-young voice.

Dear me! Thanks a million for putting this song. I have recorded this song from Radio some 20 years ago in a tape recorder. I still remember all the lyrics! I have been looking for it for quite sometime but did know the singer or movie, today somehow just felt like searching online and found it here, thanks again. Could you pls share a downloadable mp3 of this song?

Regards,
Sonal

Kamal Barot had a mysterious magic in her voice which is unexplainable…I love her duet with Mahendra Kapoor ji “Jigar mein dard kaisa…(Apna Ghar Apni Kahani-1968) in which she has sung only two lines repeated several times and has provided sheen to the melody to the extent that you will never have enough of this song…Atul ji kindly feature this gem sometime

Am I the only one who could relate the rendering to traces of Noorjahan’s voice ?
