Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Aa bhi jaa haaye tujhe dhoondhen nigaahen meri

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

Ah, the crisp voice of Kamal Barot. A sound that is so unique, and then so attractive, in certain scenarios. Granted that this voice may not exhibit as wide a range as some of her more successful peers, but the concern also works the other way round. That the voice, and some more like hers, did not get enough opportunity to develop more. We do find examples of her songs in all genres – except maybe having sung some sort of a cabaret song for Helen. Alas, it was an era dominated by few. And maybe that is what life is about – circumstances and relationships many a time define success, more than talent does.

Some times in the 60s, Kamal Barot has recorded a string of non-film songs. We have already showcased three of them on this blog. And still there are a few more – to be discovered, to be discussed and to be relished. I remember when the second NFS of hers was posted, “Hum Tumhen To Kabhi Na Bhoolenge”, our
dear friend Shekhar ji Gupta had commented that Kamal Barot’s voice is “ –forever young”. It is a very appropriate observation, and other lovers of such music will agree.

The genre of non-film songs is fairly obscure and even rare. Some songs are really hard to find. The powerful media of the silver screen has been a powerful force behind the success and popularity of a myriad of film songs. But the NFSs have been a distant cousin, being content with the medium of radio for their dissemination and propagation. The connoisseurs, of course, would collect the vinyl records, but the popularity and awareness for the general listening public depends very heavily on the radio. A fairly large number of NFS songs are solos, and just so by design. A rarer and more obscure breed within the NFS songs is the duets. There are some, but still very few, in comparison.

This song, once again, is prompted for posting by the special request of AK ji’s audience, from his blog ‘Songs of Yore’. And this song turns out to be a lovely and a poignant duet. In this song, Kamal Barot is joined by a fairly unknown and unfamiliar voice, whose name is Prabhu Arora. Generally, the singers of non-film songs also have some (or a lot of) participation in the film song arena as well. Prompted by this thought, I tried to scan the Geet Kosh searching for this singer. After a lot of scanning, I found his name eventually in one film, and that too an unreleased film – ‘Maalik’ from sometimes in 1950s. Outside of the three songs in this film, I have not been able to track down any other online reference for this singer. And I will turn to our more knowledgeable fellow travelers to help and add more information to this name.

A little more information about the song itself is provided by my collector friend, who incidentally has this record in his collection. The music of this song is by Prabhu Arora himself. So that tells us that Prabhu Arora is a music director as well as a singer. And the wonderful lyrics are by Prem Dhawan.

A song of separation, and song of longing, calling out to the beloved. Simple words, and simple melody. And yet, the impressions are intense and compelling. Lovely song, beautifully rendered. Reminds of forlorn love, inside the heart. Listen and be reminiscent.

saare dukh bhool gayaa
kaise bhooloon judaai teri
aa bhi jaa haaye, tujhe dhoonde nigaahen meri

All my sorrows and despair
I have forgotten
But this separation from you, my love
I am not able to forsake
O come, come to me
My lonely eyes are seeking you

ankhiyon se door sahi
mere dil mein hai surat teri
saajnaa haaye, teri yaad hi zindagi meri

You may be far away from my sight
But your image is engraved in my heart
O my dear beloved
You thoughts and remembrance
Is my only life now

duniya samjhe dil toote to toote preet ke naate
ye bandhan to janam janam ke, yun kab todey jaate

Ah this callous world says
When the heart is broken
So are broken the threads of love
Ah, but these threads
They are the bonds of many lifetimes
Cannot be so simply broken

doobaa suraj phir chadta hai, laut ke aayen bahaaren
tu bhi laut ke aa jaa mere sapne tujhe pukaaren

The sun rises again, every dawn
After setting the previous evening
And the spring returns
On its time, every year
Come, my dear
Return to me
My dreams still beckon you

Sudhirji,
A million thanks to you and your collector friend, and Atul. Prabhu Arora has uncanny resemblance to Mukesh.

AK ji,

Your observation is correct. When I heard it myself, my first reaction was also the same. I immediately checked with Harish Raghuvanshi ji about this, and he said he was pretty sure this song is not by Mukesh. Then I checked with my collector friend, and he confirmed the name Prabhu Arora after checking the record itself.
