Divas of Hindi Film music (6) :
———————————–
The series has reached a stage where I have covered several old timers among female playback singers who left their marks in Hindi movie music. The last of those to feature here is Geeta Dutt. This is a duet with Rafi from the film ‘Superman’ (1960). Prem Dhawan is the lyricist and the music director is Sardar Malik. Only the audio link is available, but it is said to be picturized on Helen and Majnu.

I heard this song a few days ago for the first time. I was surprised to find this ‘yodeling’ by Rafi. I know that Kishore Kumar is famed for this facet of his singing. But I knew Rafi sahab had done yodeling in some songs, but this was a new example of a yodelling song from Rafi for me. When I searched the net about the history of Kishore Kumar yodelling, I found this Wiki page on yodeling which mentioned Kishore Kumar’s name and a Tamil comedian J P Chandrababu as having introduced yodeling in India. I found this page too. It is general perception that it was Kishore Kumar who started yodeling in playback singing with ‘Jhumroo’ (1961).

Now let us look at the Rafi Sahab’s history of yodeling. I found these songs which are already posted in the blog :
Unse rippi tippy ho gayi from ‘ Agra Road ‘ (1957), Hello sweety seventeen from ‘Dr Z ‘ (1959), Hello sweety seventeen from ‘ Dr. Z ‘ (1959), Gussa fuzool hai qubool from Reporter Raju (1962).

Still search led me to this song ek do teen chaar from ‘Muqaddar” (1950), where both Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle are yodeling. So this settles the matter, as this must be first instance of yodeling in hindi film songs.

Now let us come back to song under discussion. There are around around 130 duet songs by Rafi and Geeta Dutt.

List of my personal favourite songs :

Song Movie Year Movie
Mohabbat Karlo Jee Bharlo Kisne Roka Hai Aar Paar 1954 Mohd Rafi, Geeta Dutt
Sun sun sun sun Zaalima Pyar Humko Tumse Ho Gaya Aar Paar 1954 Mohd Rafi, Geeta Dutt
Chal Diye Banda Nawaaz Chhed Kar Mere Dil Ka Taar Mr & Mrs 55 1955 Mohd Rafi, Geeta Dutt
Jaane Kaahan Mera Jigar Gaya Ji Mr & Mrs 55 1955 Mohd Rafi, Geeta Dutt
Udhar Tum Haseen Ho Idhar Dil Jawaan Hai Mr & Mrs 55 1955 Mohd Rafi, Geeta Dutt
Ae Dil Hai Mushkil Jeena Yahaan C I D 1956 Mohd Rafi, Geeta Dutt
Aankhon Hi Aankhon Mein Ishaara Ho Gaya C I D 1956 Mohd Rafi, Geeta Dutt
Ghareeb Jaanke Humko Na Tum Mita Dena Chhoo Mantar 1956 Mohd Rafi, Geeta Dutt
Hum Aapki Aankhon Mein Is Dil Ko Basa Den To Pyaasa 1957 Mohd Rafi, Geeta Dutt
Rim Jhim Ke Taraane Leke Aayi Barsaat Kaala Bazar 1960 Mohd Rafi, Geeta Dutt
Chupke Se Mile Pyaase Pyaase Kuchh Hum Kuchh Tum Manzil 1960 Mohd Rafi, Geeta Dutt

Among the songs listed above there are mostly romantic/fun songs by O. P. Nayyar & S. D. Burman. Geeta Dutt sang some sad songs too which are all time classics for Roshan, S. D. Burman, etc. She formed the mainstay of O. P. Nayyar’s music for most of 50’s alongwith Shamshad Begum.

So here is the Rafi-Geeta teasing duet reminiscent of the 50’s decade. If I find Rafi Sahab’s yodeling better sounding than the others, than that cannot be helped.

Lyrics

thhodi thhodi gori hain
thhodi thhodi kaali hain
chhoriyaan aaj ki haaye
nakhre waali hain
thhode thhode kaale hain
thhode thhode gore hain
bade rangeen haaye
aaj ke chhore hain

hoy
thhodi thhodi gori hain
thhodi thhodi kaali hain
chhoriyaan aaj ki haaye
nakhre waali hain

munh pe lagaa hai powder
zulfen kati kataayin
uss pe kayee adaayen
haaye re haaye duhaayi
palle nahin hai paayi
phir bhi lagi hai tie
udd gayee issi tarah se
baaqi sabhi kamaayi
baaqi sabhi kamaayi ee

thhodi thhodi gori hain
thhodi thhodi kaali hain
chhoriyaan aaj ki haaye
nakhre waali hain
thhode thhode kaale hain
thhode thhode gore hain
bade rangeen haaye
aaj ke chhore hain

laa la ra le ee oo
laa la ra le ee oo
laa la ra le ee oo

dil ko le gaye mere
dekho yeh phool se chehre
jin ke liye lutey ham
baithhe hain munh ko bakhere
kis ne kahaa thha aanaa
ham se nain milaana
aa ke meri gali mein
mushkil badaa hai jaana
mushkil badaa hai jaana aa

thhodi thhodi gori hain
thhodi thhodi kaali hain
chhoriyaan aaj ki haaye
nakhre waali hain
thhode thhode kaale hain
thhode thhode gore hain
bade rangeen haaye
aaj ke chhore hain

laa la ra le ee oo
laa la ra le ee oo
laa la ra le ee oo

chhodo takraar ki baaten
karo kuchh pyaar ki baaten
aa ke chali na jaayen
kahin deedaar ki raaten
denaa kisi aur ko jhaanse
?? pyaar ki baaten
miyaan majnu raho bachke
kahin jaana nahin jaa ke
kahin jaana nahin jaa ke ae

thhodi thhodi gori hain
thhodi thhodi kaali hain
chhoriyaan aaj ki haaye
nakhre waali hain

Dear Nahm bhai,
It may not be right to say that yodelling in Hindi film songs started from film ‘Jhumroo’. Much before that Kishore had yodelled in ‘New Delhi’, ‘Chandan’ and ‘Ilzam’.
Hollywood great actor-singer Danny Kaye used to yodel a lot in his songs. He was the role model for Kishore, who emulated his style of acting, comedy, dance and singing. Kishore portrayed the title role in the film ‘Begunah’ released in 1955, and yodelled like his idol, Danny Kaye’s famous film ‘Knock on the Wood’. The Hollywood producers sued in India charging that their film was plagiarised frame-by-frame in ‘Begunah’, which thus had the dubious distinction of being the first film (perhaps the only Indian film?) banned due to mis-use of copyrights by blatant copying.
I have read of famous south indian actor, Mr. Chandrababu but I am not sure whether yodelling was attempted in films earlier than the films mentioned above by me. May be other knowledgable persons can throw some more light on this issue.

The earliest yodelling song of Kishore Kumar I came across was https://atulsongaday.me/2012/08/13/ek-do-teen-chaar-2/ from ‘Muqaddar’ (1950). It is a duet song where at the end even Asha Bhonsle also yodels with Kishore Kumar.

No Sir, I did read ur comments, which frankly comes across as ur own observation. I have merely pointed out that the fact (as mentioned/repeated by you) is already part of article written by Nahm, which ur comment honestly is not pointing out. Im just giving the due credit to Nahm. I havent repeated ur comment. I have copied and posted exact quote in the above article written by Nahm.

Regards.
