‘Darling Darling’ (1977) was directed by Gogi Anand for Fortune Films International, Bombay. The movie had Dev Anand, Zeenat Aman, Mehmood, Jeewan, Nadira, Dheeraj Kumar, Poonam, Durga Khote, Sajjan, Helen, Ranjan, Raj Verma, Shivraj, Shefali, V Gopal, Janki Das, Hercules, Jhankana Desai, Geeta Khanna, Julien, Baby Guddu, Baby Padmini, Monto, Sheikh, Birbal, Shahid Bijnori, Dhanna etc in it.
I had not watched this movie when it was released. One reason was that I did not watch any movies from 1972 till 1978, ‘Zindagi Zindagi’ (1972) being the last movie. I was in the school and my father, like many parents of those days had a very poor view of movie watching. In his opinion, movies spoiled children who then did poorly in academics and thus struggled in future. So I was prevented from this fate.
But that was only up to June 1978. I appeared in Matriculation examinations in February March 1978. When results were out, I had done well enough to find myself admitted to St Xavier’s college, Ranchi, considered the premier college of Bihar (Jharkhand was not formed at that time). My father thought that I was now ‘mature‘ being a college student and so I got a new found ‘freedom‘ which I exploited to the hilt. With benefit of hindsight, I needed guidance of some elder at that time. I failed to make the most of my stay at St Xavier’s college because I was distracted by the sight of movie halls. Most movie halls were located along the road (called main road) that I had to commute through on my way to college and back.
I watched movies with a vengeance from June 1978 onwards, as if making up for lost time. Fortunately, I still managed to have some future because I managed to qualify for a UPSC examination, which was one of the only two UPSC examinations that recruit undergraduates.
I began by watching movies released in 1978. ‘Darling Darling’ (1977) was just before that time so I did not watch it. The first Dev Anand movie that I watched during that movie watching spree was ‘Johny Mera Naam’ (1970) during its rerun. I was suitably impressed. Then came ‘Des Pardes’ (1978) that I watched during its first run.
Personally I found it very difficult to warm up to Dev Anand. In my view, he should have given up acting in roles where he played half his age and romanced actresses who looked and were much younger than him. To make matters worse, the story lines of his movies were often ridiculous.
Another thing that I noticed about Dev Anand movies that his movies showcased ‘modern‘ way of life. Modern here meant western ways.
‘Darling Darling’ (1977) was a n archetypal Dev Anand movie of those days. I have not watched the movie but I can form my opinion about the songs of the movie.

The sixth and final song of the movie that is being covered here is sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by RD Burman.
Picturisation of this song finds Dev Anand teaching Zeenat Aman the modern lifestyle. Today, with the benefit of hindsight, most people may find the lyrics and the song funny and unintentionally so. I wonder how most people those days reacted to this song. I would have found this song amusing even during those days had I watched the movie at that time. I could never bring myself to view Zeenat Aman as the love interest of Dev Anand, after watching her as Dev Anand’s sister in ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ (1971).
Even the title of the movie ‘Darling Darling’ was somewhat scandalous for the India of 1970s. ‘Darling’ was considered a bad word in most Indian households of those days. I recall our geography text book had a chapter of Australia. Australia had a river named Murray-Darling. We school students found this name as quite scandalous those days. 🙂
Things have changed a lot by now. ‘Darling’ has become an acceptable word in India with time.
The movie itself did not find much favor with movie audiences of those days, as far as I can tell, reading movie reviews in magazines of those days.
