#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————————
# R.D. Burman – Music from ‘The 1970s’# (Darling Darling-1977)
——————————————-———————————

With this post we go back to the ‘decade of ‘seventies’. Of late very few songs from the ‘seventies’ have been posted on the blog. We are still a long way off from the estimated eight thousand songs that were created in this decade, so far, only 2834 songs from 1970s have been posted on the blog. On personal front,I also have many songs from this decade lined up to be present here. All these days I was listening to and enjoying songs on ‘radio’ every morning and evening while travelling to workplace and returning back to home.

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Darling Darling-1977’. I have presented a song from this movie in the past where I had mentioned that this movie had a few good songs that were played frequently on loud-speakers on those years.

Title song of this movie was heard more than other songs. I have mentioned that I did not like this ‘title song’ ‘hello darling bolo hello darling’ as I found it very irritating. As growing children the word ‘darling’ was taboo for us growing up in conservative surroundings. It was an ‘ultra-modern’ word for children like us who were studying in ‘small village school’:). This song is yet to appear on this blog and it will be coming here soon 🙂

Today another song from this movie is being presented with this post.

“Darling Darling-1977” was directed by Gogi Anand for ‘Fortune Films International, Bombay’. It was produced by Kishore Doshi. ‘Darling Darling-1977’ is mentioned as a movie from ‘genre’ of ‘social movies’ in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980). It had Dev Anand, Zeenat Aman, Mahmood, Jeevan, Nadira, Dheeraj Kumar, Poonam, Sajjan, Durga Khote, Helen, Ranjan, Raj Verma, Shivraj, Shefali, V. Gopal, Hercules, Baby Goody, Baby Padmini, Janki Das, Zankhana, Pushpanjali, Birbal, Roopa, Dev Raj, Julian, Hira, Geeta Khanna, Monto, Pushpa Nepali, Bhushan Sawhny, Dhanna, Shahid Bijnori, Shaikh, and others.

Story and screenplay of this movie was written by Gulshan Nanda. Dialogues of this movie were written by Bhushan Banmali. Editing of this film was done by Ashok Ghai.

This movie has six songs that were written by Anand Bakshi and composed by R.D. Burman. Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle and R.D. Burman had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Following is the brief about the story of this movie taken from filmiclub.com

‘Darling Darling’ is a 1977 Indian Bollywood social film released in 1977. The film is directed by Gogi Anand.
It is the story of a young man and woman brought together by circumstances. In a bid to solve their own individual problems, they strike a bargain with each other, pass through various vicissitudes and ultimately fall in love and are united. – “Darling Darling” is the story of two lovers who are caught in the cob-web of crime and conspiracy. The story takes unexpected turns almost in every reel and keeps the audience engrossed throughout the film. . Kumar (Dev Anand) is the grandson of a wealthy widow (Durga Khote). Having been jilted in love by Seema (Poonam), Kumar resolves never to marry. His grandmother wants a good wife in the house and threatens Kumar to disinherit him of the money if he did not marry soon. . On the other hand, there is Madhu (Zeenat Aman) who has been brought up by her step-mother (Nadira) and tortured by step-sister Seema. To inherit the entire property of Madhu, left to her by her father Rai Bahadur Dinanath (Sajjan) Jeevan, Nadira, Seema and Jeevan’s son, Dheeraj conspire to marry Madhu with Dheeraj and kill her after marriage. . Madhu is saved from the pursuing thugs of Mrs. Rai Bahadur by Kumar, who on the adivce of his friend Debu (Mahmood) brings her to his house with Debu posing as her father and makes her acceptable to his grandmother. Kumar thinks that he will get the entire property by having a “hired wife while the grandmother reveals to Madhu that they are actually very poor and the entire property has been mortgaged. . . The story takes a sudden twist when, in the absence of his grandmother, Kumar is unable to pay off the creditors. Madhu then offers to take him out of trouble if he became her “hired husband” and brought the conspirators to book. Where this all leads to is to be watched in the movie. 🙂

This movie ‘Darling Darling-1977’ which has good music by Pancham featured in the top twenty ‘Bollywood movies’ of ‘1977’ (as per IMDB). None of the songs from this movie appeared in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of ‘1977’. Though this annual Binaca Geetmala list of 1977 had as many as eleven other songs composed by Pancham there.

‘Radio listeners’ know that the song ‘aise naa mujhe tum dekho’ is the top favorite of almost all FM channels on radio nowadays and it gets frequently played on radio in between. Four songs out of the six songs from this movie have already been posted on the blog.

Today I am presenting the fifth song from this movie which is a nice entertaining hummable song with the special ‘Pancham’ beats. There is an interesting story behind the ‘fast paced’ clap-sound in this song which are part of the interlude of this song. It is mentioned in the biography of Pancham – ‘R.D. Burman – The Man, The Music’ – by Anirudha Bhattacharjee & Balaji Vittal that Pancham asked his musician Amrutrao Katkar to take off his shirt and sit in the recording room where Pancham played these ‘series of beats’ by his hands like a ‘tabla’ on the shirtless back of Amrutrao (listen in video of this song from 05:27 to 05:40 & 03:00 to 03:15 in the audio of this song). Now we all know that there are many such stories when Pancham created music by using unconventional ways and achieve new heights in his musical journey making him a ‘genius’ and ‘unique’ the history of music of Hindi Cinema. The story of Pancham songs will keep continuing further.

Today’s song happens when Kumar (Dev Anand) takes Madhu (Zeenat Aman) to a club party where the club dancer (Helen) teases Kumar after Kumar tells her that he has been engaged to Madhu and is going to marry her. While the club dancer sings the song to Kumar, Madhu being a simple girl watches her but provoked by the club dancer’s singing and dancing she joins the performance with her ultra-modern get-up.

We have Dev Anand lip-syncing for Kishore Kumar and Helen and Zeenat Aman lip-syncing for Asha Bhonsle in this foot tapping song. There are many other artists present in the picturization of this song. Lyrics for the song are by Anand Bakshi and music is composed by R.D. Burman.

Enjoy the song!!!

Hullo Atuldom

6th October 1933 was the date of birth of Brijmohan Kishanlal Sadanah who was born in Gujranwala Punjab, undivided India. He was a producer/ director of entertainers like “Yeh raat phir na aayegi”, “Ustadon ke ustad”, “Victoria No. 203”, “Chori mera kaam”, “Ek se badkar ek”, “Professor Pyarelal” etc. Before turning producer with “Ustadon ke ustad” in 1963 he was a director of films like “Tu nahi aur sahi”, “Nai rahen”, “Bhule bhatke” etc. He was the brother of Chander Sadanah who was associate producer of ‘Victoria No.203’, ‘Do Bhai’ etc. i.e. the brothers worked as a team.

Brij (as he was called in the industry) was married to actress Sayeeda Khan who had acted in ‘Kanyadaan’ alongside Shashi Kapoor & Asha Parekh. Kamal Sadanah who made his debut in films with ‘Bekhudi’ in 1992 with Kajol is the son of Brij & Sayeeda. Even Chander Sadanah’s daughters Nagma & Jyotika are actresses; seen mostly South Indian films. All this I have written to show that this is a family of entertainers which had only one black spot in its history; which is public knowledge & I don’t intend mentioning it here. Today Brij would have been 90 but for the unfortunate incident in October of 1990.

Today’s song is from the 1980 released Shatrughan Sinha- Zeenat Aman- Vinod Khanna starrer “Bombay 405 Miles”. Iftikhar, Deven Verma, Helen, Raza Murad, Shammi, Murad and Amjad Khan & Pran were the other important characters in the film. The music of the film was by Kalyanji Anandji & lyrics were by Indeevar. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Mohd. Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor, & Hemlata were the singers used. The story of the film was very simple:
“Ranveer Singh’s (Iftikhar) family is killed by his adopted brother Veer Singh (Amjad Khan) when Ranveer Singh is away on a business tour. He comes back witha a doll for his daughter that can record voices. (The doll is an important part of the climax) Mistakenly, Veer Singh’s men kill Sonu daughter of Masterji (Pran) thinking she is Munni daughter of Ranveer Singh.

Kishen (Shatrughan Sinha) a con man from Calcutta and Kanhaiya (Vinod Khanna) a con men from Delhi are ordered by the court to stay away (tadipaar) from respective city limits for five years. Kishen and Kanhaiya meet at a bus stand along with a con woman Radha (Radha) they decide to travel to Bombay. On the way the duo come across Mohanlal (guest appearance of Chaman Puri) elder brother of Masterji and loyal driver of Ranveer Singh. He dies while saving Munni from Veer Singh’s man and tells them that Munni’s life is in danger as its a question of Crores of Rupees.

Kishen and Kanhaiya reach Bombay with Munni thinking they will get benefited from it as Munni belongs to a rich family. But before they could trace anyone Veer Singh finds their whereabouts and puts his men behind Kishen and Kanhaiya.

And then the roller-coaster of entertainment takes over. I have seen the film in a cinema hall when it had released as my dear father was a huge fan of such over-the-top entertainers which didn’t need logic to see them through. I am also a fan of this film & see it whenever it comes on any television channel. I appreciate the writer’s (K.A. Narayan) thinking when he named the main characters- Kishan, Kanhaiya & Radha. Another aspect of the film which I love is the interactions between Kishan & Kanhaiya but then these two actors have been seen together in a few films before this one & I am sure there must have been a comfort level between the two.

With this post we also remember the tall, handsome, dimple- chinned Vinod Khanna. He had made his debut in films with “Man ka Meet” in 1969 & he was not the main lead there. His next few films saw him play characters that were either Shammi Kapoor’s brother or Rajesh Khanna’s nemesis (villain in ‘Aan Milo Sajna’ & inspector in ‘Sachaa Jhootha’) etc. After about 12 such films he was seen in a different type of film ‘Mere Apne” in 1971. Similar, differently made film was “Achanak” (1973) where he was cast as an army man who is accused of killing his beloved wife. There were films like ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh’, ‘Anokhi ada’ etc between ‘Mere Apne’ & ‘Achanak’ which saw him play negative vicious characters & making a name for himself.

His second phase in films began after he returned from sanyaas & we saw him in films like ‘Insaaf’, ‘Batwaara’ , ‘Chandni’; as a father in ‘Kshatriya’, ‘Parampara’ & he was there in two installments of Salman khan’s “Dabangg”. Reading my post, people will wonder if I forgot his teaming up with Amitabh Bachchan in the movies of the late 1970s- no I haven’t. I stop in my tracks when I see one of those movies even today. Similarly his ‘Inkaar’, ‘Kudrat’, ‘Lahu ke do rang’ & a few more are on my list of most-loved films.

Missing you Vinod Khanna the original Jabbar Singh.

Song-Qasam na lo koi humse (Bombay 405 miles)(1980) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Indeewar, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

Qasam na lo koi hamse
qasam na hum koi khaayenge

haan qasam na lo koyi hamse
qasam na hum koyi khaayenge
jab tak saath nibhega
tab tak saath nibhaayenge
lekin jis din saath nahin nibha toh
gar saath nahin jo nibhega
dil se dil jab na milega
jaise dost juda hote hain
hum waise juda ho jaayenge
qasam na lo koyi hamse
qasam na hum koyi khaayenge

na ho jinko khud pe bharosa
wahi qasmein liya karte hain
wahi qasmein liyaa karte hain
sachche hon jinke iraade
wahi waade kiya karte hain
sachcha ho agar yaaraana
toh phir kya yaqeen dilaana
ho jinko pyaar nibhaana
bin boley woh pyaar nibhaayenge ae
qasam na lo koyi hamse
qasam na hum koyi khaayenge

kabhi juda hone ki naubat hi kyon kar aaye
naubat hi kyon kar aaye
ek dooje ke saanche mein
insaan agar dhhal jaaye
chehre pe na hon jo naqaaben
do dilon hon jo khuli kitaabein
manzoor agar ho haqeeqat
hamein khwaab na behka paayenge ae

qasam na lo koyi hamse
qasam na hum koyi khaayenge
qasam na lo koyi hamse
qasam na hum koyi khaayenge
la la la laaa laaa laalaa
la la la laa lalaalaa

Kis ki sadaayen mujhko bulaayen Red Rose(1980) (Lyrics by Prakashchandraji) 9:10 pm
Shakti de maa Ashaanti(1982) (Lyrics by Avinashji) 9:40 pm

29/12/2012 was a Saturday. As can be seen from the above list Atulji posted the first song at 7.38 in the morning. 12 songs were posted, 6 of which were guest posts from which 4 were by Sudhirji (he was also very active on the blog then) and one each by Nahmji & Arunkumarji.

The last three posts on that date had lyrics contributed by Avinashji, Prakashchandraji and Khyatiji; all three of which were songs featuring Rajesh Khanna for his birthday. It was the first birthdate after Kaka’s death in July that year; we were remembering him on what would have been his 70th birthday.

The song that was contributed by Avinashji was from “Ashanti” an Eagle Film’s production. Hatt jaao deewaane aaye was a song from the 1960 release “Singapore” which was also an Eagle Films’ production that was directed by Shakti Samanta. (that must have been unplanned, I am sure).

“Ashanti” (1982), a movie produced by Parvesh Mehra & Rajiv Mehra of Eagle Film’s and directed by Umesh Mehra. It had music by R.D. Burman with Anand Bakshi as the lyricist. Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Amit Kumar, Shailendra Singh were the playback singers used. The following three songs from this movie are on the blog.

Shakti de maa 29 december 2012
Laungi mirchi main Kolhapur ki 19 November 2019
Na tujhse na mujhse 29 December 2021

“Ashanti” was one of the multi-starrers of that year. It had Rajesh Khanna heading a cast of Shabana Azmi, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Mithun Chakravarthy, Kanwaljeet, Amrish Puri, Satyen Kappu, Jeevan Ramesh Deo, Nadira, Pinchoo kapoor, Narendranath, Monty Nath, and many more known faces that formed the supporting cast. It was an action film and was the story of an honest & dedicated police officer played by Rajesh Khanna who intercepts a bank robbery but is himself caught with the suitcase of stolen money, tried in the court and jailed. Further twists in the tale lead him to loosing a leg too. On his release from prison he seeks out the wrong doers and for this he has help from the three heroines and Shankar Dada played by Mithun. If my memory is correct, one of the heroines is also the lost daughter of Amrish Puri who is the cause of all the troubles of the police officer. The movie comes to a close after a lot of drama and high voltage action.

Today’s song has the voices of Asha Bhonsle and Amit Kumar. The song is picturised as a disco dance song on Zeenat Aman and Kanwaljeet. Rajesh Khanna is present among the audience. He is seen seated around a table with Shabana Azmi and he is seen looking furtively as befits a police officer on an important sectet mission.

Missing Kaka a.k.a Rajesh (first Superstar of Bollywood) Khanna on what would have been his 80th birthday.

Lyrics

Chorus

meri nigaahon pe teri
zulfon ka baadal chhaa gaya
jhoom ke baadal ki tarah
tera deewaana aa gaya
dil ne tujhe
phir yaad kiya hai
ya ya yaad rakhana

jaane jigar ka
mere dil pe
naam likha hai

ya ya yaad rakhna

sab ki nazar ke saamne
duniya se ye kehna hai
haan haan
aa aa a
ha ha aa ha aa
tumse juda ho kar hamen
duniya me hame nahi rehna hai

jaan se bichhad ke kaun jiya hai
ya ya yaad rakhna

mere dil pe

kuku

Hullo Atuldom

“Sohni Mahiwal” (1984) was a Indo-Russian historical romance drama film based on the story of ‘Sohni Mahiwal’ – one of the four popular tragic love stories of Punjab & Sindh region; the other three being Sassi Punnun, Mirza Sahiban, & Heer Ranjha; I am sure there may be more such stories in folklore.
“Sohni Mahiwal” has been made by the Hindi film industry a few times- songs from the 1946 and 1958 versions are there on the blog. I have read somewhere that in 1977 BR Films had announced a Punjabi version too with Rajesh Khanna and Neetu Singh in the lead, it never reached completion.

The 1984 version was produced by F.C. Mehra and directed by Umesh Mehra & Latif Faiziyev. This was the second collaboration of the Mehras with the Russians after “Alibaba aur 40 Chor” (1980). At the insistence of the Russians a special role was created for Zeenat Aman- they had liked her in ‘Alibaba aur 40 Chor’. This was one of Anu Malik’s (the music director for this film) earliest major film.
Sunny Deol and Poonam Dhillon played the star-crossed lovers- this was Sunny Deol’s second film, he was shooting for this when ‘Betaab’ released. Pran, Tanuja, Gulshan Grover, Rakesh Bedi, alongwith a few Russian actors formed the rest of the cast. Shammi Kapoor (a friend of F.C. Mehra) had a tiny guest role and Zeenat Aman was in a supporting role of Zarina the Bandit.

“Hare Rama Hare Krishna” released in January of 1971 i.e. 51 years ago. Pre-production and related activities may have started atleast a year or two earlier i.e. sometime in 1969 or 1970- 52/53 years back. That means our today’s birthday girl has been around in the industry for close to 53 years- unbelievable. Prior to that she was a model who went on to participate in the Femina Miss India contest and on winning there represented India at the Miss Asia- Pacific beauty pageant and winning that title too.

‘Zeenat Aman’ a name that is associated with roles that were different from what the heroines of that era played. It is not as if she didn’t play roles of Saree-clad ladies but most of them were not the wimpy-weepy types. She was most sought after for roles of ladies who were more modern in their looks and thinking. She was a trend setter who didn’t shy away from flaunting her well looked after appearance.
Today when she is turning an year older we shall see her in this dance number from “Sohni Mahiwal” singing an Anand Bakshi written song which was play-backed by Asha Bhonsle. This dance is to help Mahiwal reach the marriage venue of Sohni’s wedding and help the lovers unite. That is Zarina the bandit has a heart of gold.

Wishing Zeenie Baby (as she used to be called fondly) all health and cheer.

Blog Day :

5237 Post No. : 17232 Movie Count :

Yesteryears actress Zeenat Aman (born on 19th November’1951) turns 71 years of age today on 19th November 2022.

For people like me who have grown up in the seventies, Zeenat Aman was one of the leading actresses in the movies produced during these years and in early eighties too.

Today I am not going into the details of her filmography or mentioning here the many of her movies which I like most or which I remember most.

(Yes, ‘Roti Kapada Aur Makaan-1974’, will always remain as my top favorite though)

To present a song on Zeenat Aman’s birthday today I was looking for a solo female song, and so I skipped launching of a movie from the ‘seventies’ which I am longing to introduce on the blog since long ( because that movie does not have a Zeenat Aman solo song in that) 🙂 .

Today’s song is from the ‘1982 movie ‘Jaanwar’.

There have been movies with this title ‘Jaanwar’ in 1965, 1982, 1999 and even in 2007 too. Today we get introduced to the ‘Jaanwar’ movie of ‘1982’.

It was directed by Ali Raza for ‘P.M. Pictures, Bombay’. This movie was produced by Pradyuman Mohla. It had Rajesh Khanna, Zeenat Aman, Pran, Yogeeta Bali, Prem Chopra, Pradeep Kumar, Nirupa Roy, Kamal Kapoor, Om Shivpuri, Beena, Rajan Haksar, Amar, Murad, Sundar, Mohan Choti, Meena T., Tom Alter, Madhup Sharma, Kanchan Bhatt and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board 20.12.1982.

This movie has six songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

As mentioned above today we are going to listen to a solo song sung by Lata Mangeshkar and performed on screen by the beautiful Zeenat Aman. This song is a seduction song where Zeenat Aman wishes to come closer to Rajesh Khanna who is hesitating for the reasons unknown to us (or to me, as I have not watched this movie) 🙂

So far as I can remember I think this movie was not a successful movie of its time. Though, ‘Wikipedia’ mentions it a ‘hit’ movie. Also I do not remember to have heard the songs of these movies frequently. They all seem to be lesser heard songs.

Today’s song is a sweet melodious song to listen and enjoy.

Lyrics are by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

Let us wish Zeenat Aman a very happy birthday and a healthy and peaceful enjoyable life ahead …

(with today’s song ‘Jaanwar-1982’ joins ‘Jaanwar-1965’ on the blog 🙂 )

Memories of visit to London in September 2021

This post has been a long time in arriving actually.  We went to UK not as tourist, but to see family, mainly the daughter of the family and the new grand-daughter.  We came back to Mumbai in October’21.  Lot of water has flown down the bridge since then and the grand daughter is growing by leaps and bounds since we were with her, by the grace of Almighty.

Upon returning, I found myself under pressure to find a song good enough, to write a post covering the visit.  I looked, searched and watched, found many songs, newer ones mainly filmed in the UK, and some also showing locations of the London city.  It has been a favorite location for Hindi film picturization of film makers since the 60’s, i.e. when the trend of filming on location really started in the industry. Unfortunately, I was less than satisfied with the newer songs, and characteristically, was reluctant to post a new song, which had song/dance, band/bajaa/baraat routine. The songs were quite good in their own genre, I might yet post at least one of them.

And all this while, Avinash ji has been doing a series of the songs of 70’s decade and his posts appear regularly. Now Avinash ji has also acquired a new degree, I have deduced from the Peevisie’s Mom’s post.  Congratulations to the happy parents and best wishes for the daughter and the son-in-law.

One lucky day, while browsing the YouTube, I found this Rafi-Asha duet from the film ‘Professor Pyarelal’ (1981).  It is a happy sounding romantic song and a much heard on the radio, which makes it a dear familiar friend, in my opinion.  The song is filmed in London, mostly around the city center area, around Thames River, Westminster Abbey, the London Clock Tower etc.  The famous London Tower Bridge is also visible in all its centuries old splendor.

Centuries old splendor is the term I was looking for to describe the architectural beauty of London city and its many monuments.  It is evident that it is one of the oldest surviving cities of the world.  And it has managed to maintain its beauty and its instinct for survival, adaptability to the modern times and modern architectural and infrastructure requirements can only be applauded and wondered at.

My search for a suitable song for this post ended the day I saw this song on YouTube.  But the actual writing kept getting deferred.  I thought this was a late 70’s song, and was apprehensive that Avinash ji or someone else may post this song and I will lose the opportunity to write this post.  Now I find that this movie is from 1981.  But the songs were released and popular for some years before the movie eventually released after production delays.

Getting back to the brief about our visit. As soon as we arrived in UK, various scheduling and planning for visits to different places were underway.  My uncle, our host, insisted upon a visit to London city.  The planning for the London city was so short, due to the leave constraints of my son-in-law, that I was on the verge of postponing it to the next visit.  But the window of opportunity, and my son’s contention that everybody is going to ask, “hey you went to England and didn’t see London!”, decided in favor of the visit, so it happened.

London and some other landmark locations of England are a part of the consciousness. Just as we exist, these buildings – man made creations – also exist, and are famous for the events, known as historical turning points. Unlike other major cities of the modern world, London has seen wars too and has been destroyed and built again many times over, from what ever history I have read about it. England, on the whole has had a most violent history, in the medieval and pre-medieval eras. The fault lines between the Welsh, Scots, Irish and Brits, is evident even today in the various ruins and forts, and castles.  But they did learn their lesson that divided they fall, decided to unite at some given point in history to conquer the world.  I think it was the threat of the Romans that eventually united the British Isles. The glue could only have been an ideology of self-interest, binding the factions despite bitter animosity and gruesome wars behind them. Maybe the Protestant church had something to do with it, so Britain rose to great heights as a dominant civilization in the world and they were motivated enough to write and re-write the worlds history, literally and figuratively.  British historians are also a notorious breed.  Their language, is the dominant language in the world for centuries now.  The rise of the British Empire took centuries to happen, where as the fall was swift in the 19th and 20th century.  But the cultural and linguistic dominance continues to remain on top now, and for the foreseeable future too in the 21st century.  Willingness to adapt to other cultures and language habits is said to be a major factor in the success of the English language.   Historically speaking, the Roman empire was greater and more successful in the world, before the new found land of Americas.  But the impact is all but lost in today’s world.  The geopolitical scenario keeps changing with time and passing of centuries. These changes happen faster now in a matter of decades.  There are catalysts recognizable and visible to these power shifts. This is a very heavy and deep topic, so better to leave it here.

Yes, I had to chalk out a fool proof plan and schedule, wherein a few places I wanted to visit, were not missed.  Lords cricket ground and Thames River cruise were two things I was not willing to miss.  So we worked around this, to do the Lords tour, city ride in the red bus, short cruise of Thames river, Madame Tussaud’s, Harrods, a long walk inside the Hyde Park, especially where equestrian clubs are situated, visit to Science Museum and Natural History Museum (free entry), Bakers Street and Sherlock Holmes Museum, etc.  We gave a miss to Tower of London and Buckingham Palace tours, as they were more time consuming and also expensive. The London Eye is also a popular choice, which we could not take.  Other tourist locations in UK also have a giant wheel rides, as an attraction. The Giant wheel is a common feature in other places, like Dubai, Sydney, etc. I am wondering why we don’t have a thing like this in Mumbai.

We were based in Manchester, so could visit the nearby areas too like Lake District, North Wales, Blackpool, Lancaster, Chester, Preston etc. We passed through Oxford too on our way back from London. When we had arrived in UK, everyone told us the weather is good for only 2-3 days, so enjoy as much as you can, as it is really foul from September onward.  But luckily the weather held for the entire period of our stay, and we had rains to enjoy only in North Wales and for an hour or two in London, while we were riding the red bus and we had to cross the Bridge near Westminster on foot as we missed the stop for the Westminster Pier.  A part of the song I am presenting is filmed on the same bridge, where Zeenat Aman is standing in the middle of the road and crosses to join Dharmendra on the curb. The famous Tower Bridge is now painted in azure blue. I find that the Bridge has been painted blue since 1977, but in the song, it is not looking blue, so the song was filmed before 1977, it would seem.

Some trivia about the film:

This film took so long to complete – five years – and its plot was so convoluted that after director Brij had finished shooting it, nobody could figure out how to put the film together. The producers had then called in Hrishikesh Mukherjee to edit and salvage the film. He was credited prominently in the film’s posters and publicity material.

Astonishingly, no part of the city which is showcased as the beautiful attractions, looks old or dilapidated. All of them look freshly painted and well maintained, except for the bridges on the Thames River and the Westminster Abbey, which is the family church of the British Royals. London is best enjoyed on foot, I was told and I agree. After covering a few miles on foot, in and around Exhibition Street, Marylebone, Kensington, Hyde Park, we can be surprised and find the unexpected. In fact, the most parts of UK are best enjoyed on foot, which is the common consensus. Walking trails are taken as granted in different parts of UK.

I am told that the whole of UK is connected through rivers and canals and one can go from anywhere to anywhere on a boat. I was mentally prepared to be impressed by all that I was going to see in this visit, but was more than impressed and wish to do more trips which include visits to the remaining places in England, Scotland and Wales.

We took a pre-booked guided tour of the Lord’s cricket ground at the MCC.  Seeing the many Indian in the group taking the tour, the guide asked us “Where is Sachin Tendulkar’s home?”.  The common answer was the obvious – Mumbai.  But the guide insisted that “No. Sachin’s home is right here in Marylebone.” No surprises there too, for the evidence is everywhere in London especially, that who can afford to, would prefer to stay in London. On the other hand, Sachin Tendulkar was here in Mumbai in February 2022, as we all saw him attending the funeral of Lata Mangeshkar.  Incidentally, I could not find Sachin Tendulkar’s name in the list of Test centurions at the Lords. Extensive lists are put up inside the Pavilion, of all centurions and also 5+ wicket takers in an innings.  The guide was in full form and regaled us with a story about the ‘death row’ in the viewers gallery or members gallery.  There are two such galleries, one for the home team and one for the away team. As both India and West Indies are ‘away teams’, I guess the away team gallery was the one, where Kapil Dev stood with the Prudential Cup trophy after his team’s victory in 1983 World Cup. The original Prudential Cup is still there in the small Museum for memorabilia, related to the MCC.

I have read and heard at various places, that London was the favourite place in the world for Rafi Sahab also. He is said to have been fond of the city, as his sons are settled there.

I can go on remembering things and my impressions of the visit, but the post is got to end somewhere. The song being presented in this post is filmed in London on Dharmendra and Zeenat Aman. Rafi Sahab and Asha Bhonsle are giving playback to them in the song written by Rajendra Krishan and composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

This duet is typical of the Kalyanji-Anandji style of duet composition, sounding very similar to the Rafi-Asha duet from ‘Qurbani’. We the radio fans, listened to the song in late 70’s, loved and liked it, but had all but forgotten it. Even the links on YouTube are few, with only one video available.

Blog Day :

4939 Post No. : 16790

There are some events in the blog that need human intervention. These are events viz century of posts, artists etc. Then there are events that happen without any conscious efforts on our part.

One such event took place just now today (25 January 2022). The blog just clocked 15 million visitors at around 16:15 IST on 25 January 2022. I was aware of this event approaching. I was not the only one. Some other keeneyed regulars had also noticed it. One of them (Mahesh Mamadapur) had guessed that the 15th million visitor would get clocked to coincide with 26 january, the republic day of India. But the visitors were in a hurry. They clocked this figure one day in advance! 🙂

Here is a summary of all the million visitors that have taken place in the blog so far :-

Visitor number Date achieved Blog day number Days taken for the million hits Remarks
1 million 25 October 2010 829 829 Slowest one million @ 1206 visitors per day
2 millions 7 November 2011 1207 378 @2645 visitors per day
3 millions 7 April 2012 1359 152 Fastest one million @ 6579 visitors per day
4 millions 10 December 2012 1606 247 @ 4049 visitors per day
5 millions 29 October 2013 1929 323 @3096 visitors per day
6 millions 12 October 2014 2277 348 @2873 visitors per day
7 millions 4 July 2015 2542 265 @ 3773 visitors per day
8 millions 20 April 2016 2833 291 @ 3436 visitors per day
9 millions 24 February 2017 3143 310 @ 3226 visitors per day
10 millions 14 January 2018 3467 324 @ 3086 visitors per day
11 millions 22 November 2018 3779 312 @ 3205 visitors per day
12 millions 4 July 2019 4003 224 @ 4464 visitors per day
13 millions 8 February 2020 4222 219 @ 4566 visitors per day
14 millions 29 November 2020 4517 295 @ 3390 visitors per day
15 millions 25 January 2022 4939 422 @ 2370 visitors per day

Overall rate of visitors till now is 3037 visitors per day from the beginning of the blog 14 years ago. A fairly decent rate of visitors for a blog dealing with a non populist topic, namely old HFM.

This calls for a celebration. We in this blog know only one way to celebrate, viz by discussing a song. 🙂

So, here is a song from “Hangaama”(1971). This movie was produced by Babulal Chainrai and Mohan Chainrai and directed by S M Abbas for Chainson Films, Bombay. The movie , a comedy movie, had Vinod Khanna, Zeenat Aman, Mehmood, Helen, Kishore Kumar, Fariyaal, Johnny walker, Aruna Irani, Yunus Parvez, Mukri, Dhumal, Jr.Mehmood, Kumud Tripathi, Janki Dass, Tuntun, Joginder, Ram Avtaar, Rajni Gupta, Master Bhagwan, Bhola, Jerry, Jagdish Kanwal, Gopal, Ranvir Raj, etc. in it.

“Hangaama”(1971) had five songs in it. One song has been covered so far. Here is the second song from the movie. This song is sung by Manna Dey and Asha Bhonsle. Anjaan is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.

Only the audio of the song is available. Those who have watched the movie state that the song was picturised on Vinod Khanna and Zeenat Aman. Vinod Khanna, then well known as a villain, was signed up reluctantly because the movie, full of comedians (Kishore Kumar, Mehmood, Johny Walker etc) needed someone who would pass for a hero and so would sing the customary romantic songs in the movie while the comedians would go about doing their clowning job. So Vinod Khanna inadvertently became a hero with this movie, that too opposite Zeenat Aman.

Song-Kachchi kali kachnaar ki (Hangaama)(1971) Singers-Manna Dey, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Anjaan, MD-R D Burman

Lyrics

kachchi kali kachnaar ki
haay haay kachchi kali kachnaar ki
arre kya samjhegi baatein pyaar ki ee ee
kya samjhegi baatein pyaar ki ee ee
kachchi kali kachnaar ki

tere aage gori chanda bhare paani
yoon na jaal bichchha

teri samajh hai udhaar ki ee ee
kyun chhede baatein bekaar ki

arre kya samjhegi baatein pyaar ki ee ee

kachchi kali kachnaar ki
hey hey hey kachchi kali kachnaar ki

khushboo meri udi mehke gali gali
behke log jahaan

jaane kisko miley jaane kispe lute
daulat yeh solah singaar ki ee ee
kachchi kali kachnaar ki
arre re re
kya samjhegi baatein pyaar ki ee ee
kya samjhegi baatein pyaar ki ee ee

kachchi kali kachnaar ki kach kach kach
kachchi kali kachnaar ki kach kach kach kach

khil ke teri umar
jis din phool bane
chaahe laakh tujhe
tu bas mujhko chune
sochoongi yeh kabhi
woh din aane toh de
bachpan jaane ko hai
bachpan jaane to de

Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 9
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –- – –

Today 29th December’2021 is the seventy-nineth birth anniversary (29 December 1942 – 18 July 2012) of Rajesh Khanna, born as Jatin Khanna.

On this occasion we pay our tributes to him and listen a song from one of his movies.

In this ninth episode of ‘Rajesh Khanna- The Phenomenon’ we look at Rajesh Khanna movies in the year 1982. In the year 1982 the following six movies of Rajesh Khanna were released (including ‘Disco Dancer’* where he had a friendly appearance).

In the previous post in this series ‘Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 8’ we had discussed how Rajesh Khanna in the late seventies switched on to different roles exploring and introspecting himself and taking a new challenge for his ‘second innings’.

In the late seventies and early eighties, he has a string of successful movies viz. ‘Amardeep’ (1979), ’Thodi Si Bewafaai’ (1980), and critically acclaimed movies like ‘Red Rose) (1980), ‘Phir Wohi Raat’ (1980), and ‘Bandish’ (1980).

In 1981 he tasted more success with movies like ‘Dard’, ‘Dhanwan’, ‘Dil e Naadan’, ‘Qudrat’ and ‘Fifty-Fifty’.

‘Qudrat’ (1981) was a multi-starrer movie and had good success at the box-office. That saw Kaka putting more efforts to change his image and considering films in the ‘multi-starrer’ and ‘action’ genres, which he thought earlier was not his ‘cup of tea’. It can also be said that these two ‘genres’, where he was not doing films, were partly responsible for the failure of his earlier movies on the box-office.

In 1982 we had Kaka’s films like ‘Raaput’, ‘Ashaanti’, ‘Dharam Kaanta’ which were multi-starrer as well as action movies. He further continued doing such ‘multi-starrer-masaala’ films like ‘Paapi Pet Ka Sawaal Hai’, ‘Dharm Aur Qaanoon’, ‘Maqsad’, ‘Bewafaai’, ‘Awaam’, ‘Vijay’, etc. coming in the next few years.

Today’s song is from one of the above movies and that movie is ‘Ashaanti’. This song also beautifully catches the ‘spirit of team efforts’ instead of a ‘one-man-show’ and advocates ‘helping each other’ to get success.

‘Ashaanti’ is directed by Umesh Mehra for Eagle Films, Bombay, and is produced by Parvesh C. Mehra.

The movie has Rajesh Khanna, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Shabana Azmi, Mithun Chakravarty, Kanwaljeet, Amrish Puri, Jeevan, Narendra Nath, Monty, Mac Mohan, Kishore Kapoor, Yusuf Khan, Ram Sethi, Nadira, Satyen Kappu, Bob Christo, Mohan Choti, Avtar Gill, Ajay Agrawal, Amir Jambra, Yusuf, Ganesh, and others. Prem Kishan and Ramesh Deo makes a special appearance in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 01.05.1982.

This movie has five songs composed by RD Burman. Lyrics for all the five songs are penned by Anand Bakshi. Following is the list of songs this movie had.

Hullo Atuldom

“Gopichand Jaasoos”(1982) was written, produced and directed by Naresh Kumar for Dimple Films, Bombay. The movie had Raj Kapoor, Zeenat Aman, Prem Chopra, I.S.Johar, Viju Khote, Sujit Kumar, Rajan Haksar, Pinchoo Kapoor, Gurbachan Singh, Manmohan Krishna, Sunder, Raj Kishore, Jugnu, Brahm Bhardwaj, Rattan Gurang, Mama, Ram Murti, Ram Lal, Billa, with friendly appearances by Sanjana, Ram Mohan, Chandrashekhar, Meher Mittal and guest appearance by Vinod Mehra.

If I am not wrong Dimple Films was the banner under which Naresh Kumar (was he brother of Rajendra Kumar?) made films. He had made “Do Jasoos” in 1975 which had Rajendra Kumar and Raj Kapoor playing ‘bumbling detectives’ Dharamchand and Karamchand. This 1982 movie had Gopichand as the Jasoos, so do we call it a sequel? 🙂

The 6 songs of the movie were penned by Santosh Anand and Munsif and Usha Khanna was the music director. Kamlesh Awasthi gives playback for Raj Kapoor and I felt his voice was Nitin Mukesh-like. Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle were the female playbacks. Two songs of the movie are present on the blog.

Chhoti si gilasiya mein bhang hamen dai de 19 November 2016

Chhoti si gilasiya mein bhang hamen dai de was on the occasion of the darling of moviegoers, of the 70s and 80s, Zeenie baby’s birthday. Today, 14th December, is the 97th birth anniversary of Ranbir Raj Kapoor- son of Prithviraj and Ramsarni Devi Kapoor, brother of Shamsher Raj Kapoor, Balbir Raj Kapoor and two sisters. Ranbir Raj Kapoor is father to Randhir (Dabboo), Rishi (Chintu), Rajeev (Chimpu) and Ritu and Rima. He has grandchildren who are into Bollywood too.

We are remembering Raj Kapoor, who was also called the Greatest Showman of Indian Cinema (in his time) or the Charlie Chaplin of Indian Cinema- this because he had adopted the Chaplin style of walking when he portrayed the common man, in Awara, Shree 420 etc., who was cheerful and honest inspite of adversities.

I may have seen his best works rather late in my life, after his passing in 1988 to be more exact, but I have definitely relished Shree 420, Awara, Anari, Jaagte Raho, Chori Chori etc. I loved all the songs of all his films be they of the 50s, 60s, or even the later ones- when he produced and directed movies and his sons played the lead. The songs of all his films have stood the test of the times and are popular internationally too. The 70s and early 80s also saw Raj Kapoor acting in films which were not from his ‘RK Films’- ‘Abdullah’, ‘Khan Dost’, ‘Do Jasoos, ‘Naukri’ etc. His last on-screen appearance was in ‘Vakil Babu’ (a full-fledged role) though he was seen in a Siddharth Kak made documentary that was based on the life and times of ‘Raj Kapoor – the Showman’ (in 1987).

He was working on the script of “Henna” after tasting success with “Ram Teri Ganga Mali” when his journey in this mortal world was cut short due to complications arising from his Asthama.
I could go on and on writing about Raj Kapoor and his songs many of which were philosophical like ‘sajan re jhooth mat bolo’; ‘kisiki muskuraahaton pe ho nisaar’; and the most popular of them all which was prophetic too “jeena yahan marna yahan” which had the poignant line “kal khel mein hum ho na ho gardish mein taarein rahenge sada, bhoologe tum, bhoolenge woh par hum tumhaare rahenge sada.” These words sealed his place in our hearts.

Today’s song is a baraat song where we have Raj Kapoor as a Sardar leading the proceedings in the voice of Kamlesh Awasthi with Zeenat Aman looking gorgeous as Punjaban (like I have said in my last post to the song from this movie, Zeenat Aman looked great in whatever she wore) singing in Lata Mangeshkars’ voice.

Lyrics

oye balle balle
main hoon sher punjab ka
hai shahar mera patiyala
ishq hi meri jaat hai
aur husn ka hoon matwaala
main jatti punjab ki
hai shahar mera ludhiyana
jab se solah saal ki ho gayi
aashiq hua zamaana

main aashiq hoon dildaar
o sun mere yaar
pyaar sikha doonga
ranjha bankar tujhko heer bana doonga
main ranjha bankar tujhko heer bana doonga
sun majnu ke ustaad
ye rakhna yaad
ishq bhula doongi
main numbardar ki chhori
qaid kara doongi

main numbardar ki chhori
qaid kara doongi

goriye zulf teri
goriye zulf teri lehraaye
gore mukhde pe
gore mukhde se takraaye
jaise naagin koi
jaise naagin koi bal khaaye
been baja doonga
ranjha bankar tujhko heer bana doonga
main ranjha bankar tujhko heer bana doonga

zulf to naagin hai
zulf to naagin hai mastani
jisko das le re
jisko dase na maange paani
kyun tu chaahe re
kyun tu chaahe jaan ganwaani
rapat likha doongi
main numbardar ki chhori
qaid kara doongi

main numbardar ki chhori
qaid kara doongi

goriye nain tere
goriye nain tere maykhaane
patle honth tere
patle honth tere paymaane
sharaabi hum bhi hai
sharabi hum hain bade puraane
pee ke dikhaauga
ranjha bankar tujhko heer bana doonga
main ranjha bankar tujhko heer bana doonga

husn ek aisa hai
husn ek aisa hai maykhana
bhara hai zahar se
re bhara hai zahar se har paymana
padega sab kuchh re
padega sab kuchh yahaan ganwaana
hosh ganwaa doongi
main numbardar ki chhori
qaid kara doongi

main numbardar ki chhori
qaid kara doongi

maia ranjha bankar tujhko heer bana doonga
