Hamen kaash tumse muhabbat na hoti

Posted on: September 1, 2009

Salim and Anarkali have been a favourite topic of Bollywood movies in 1950s and 1960s. In 1950s, there was in fact a movie called “Anarkali” (1953) which was a musical blockbuster. It had Pradeep Kumar and Bina Rai in the roles of Salim and Anarkali respectively. In 1960, “Mughal e Azam” was produced, where Dilip Kumar and Madhubala played these roles. This movie was just as big a musical blockbuster as “Anarkali” (1953).

Just about every song of “Mughal e Azam” is so well known, though some may be lesser known as well.

Here is a song from this movie that I had not heard before , or at least I may not have listened to it consciously. This song is “hamen kaash tumse muhabbat na hoti”. It is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Madhubala and Dilip Kumar.

This song has to be one of the saddest heart breaking songs one can come across. The lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni cannot be any more poignant. The helplessness and desperation of the situation comes through so well in this song.

This song is composed by Naushad.

Song-Hamen kaash tumse muhabbat na hoti (Mughal e Azam) (1960) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

hamen kaash tumse muhabbat na hoti
hamen kaash tumse muhabbat na hoti
kahaani hamaari haqeeqat na hoti
hamen kaash tumse muhabbat na hoti

na dil tum ko dete na mazboor hote
na duniya na duniya ke dastoor hote
qayaamat se pahle qayaamat na hoti
hamen kaash tumse muhabbat na hoti

hamhi badh gaye ishq mein hadd se aage
zamaane ne thokar lagaayi to jaage
agar mar bhi jaate to hairat naa hoti
hamen kaash tumse muhabbat na hoti

tumhi phoonk dete nasheman hamaare
muhabbat pe ehsaan hota tumhaara
zamaane se koyi shikaayat na hoti
hamen kaash tumse muhabbat na hoti
kahaani hamaari haqeeqat naa hoti
hamen kaash tumse muhabbat na hoti

Atul, the old Anarkali had Bina Rai and Pradeep Kumar in it. Is this song by any chance from Mughal – e – azam, which had Madhubala and Dilip Kumar? I seem to vaguely remember this song, but am not sure of the movie.

Very well observed. How could I make such a mistake ? Easy. I relied upon the comments in the youtube page. Though the commentators love such songs, their facts are often totally off the mark. This song has to be from “Mughal e Azam.”
