Blog Day :

Today’s song is from a ‘social’ film called ‘Captain Kishore’ (1957).

I was wondering what was the basis of calling this film a ‘social’ film, because it was clearly a stunt/costume film having the usual King- Queen-Evil Vazir/Evil Senapati story. I have seen this film and also give its story for you today. The Wadia Movietone was famous for making action/stunt/costume films, since the early 30’s decade The owners of Wadia split in 1942 on the issue of whether to continue making the action/stunt films. The younger brother Homi Wadia was in favour of making stunt films, while the elder brother JBH Wadia wanted to make social films, because he was seeing impending sunset on stunt films in the near future, and hence wanted to make social films on priority to survive.

They separated and Homi Wadia started his own outfit called Basant Pictures. But what happened in reality was , they both ended up making stunt and social films, defeating the very cause of their split. Later, film historians opined that the real reason for the split was the main asset of Wadia Movietone – The Fearless Nadia, who was in love with Homi Wadia. To keep Nadia engaged for a longer time, Homi Wadia argued to continue making stunt films. In spite of their split, in which Nadia went with Homi Wadia, she could not marry him because his mother was against this marriage. So, she had to wait till she died. Only then Homi married Nadia when she had crossed the age of 51 years. The love story succeeded but it was too late to have an heir for the couple!

To sum up, the film ‘Captain Kishore’ was a costume-cum-stunt film and not a ‘social’ film as claimed by the producers !

The entire 1950’s decade was a part of the ‘Golden Era’, but 1957 topped on the list for maximum entertainers and musical pictures.

1957 – what a year it was! The best year in the Golden Era! The best year in the 50s! The best year for melody and music! Such wonderful films came this year!!! The lineup of 1957 films looks like the selection of the creamy layer in everlasting music – ‘Mother India’, ‘Pyasa’, ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’, ‘Bhabhi’, ‘Asha’, ‘Miss Mary’, ‘Naya Daur’, ‘Do Aankhen Barah Haath’, ‘Paying Guest’, ‘Nau Do Gyarah’, ‘Dekh Kabira Roya’. ‘Nausherwaan e Adil ‘, ‘Gateway Of India’, ‘Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke, ‘Kathputali’, ‘Sharada’ . . . Films like ‘Baarish’, ‘Ab Dilli Door Nahin’, ‘Abhiman’, ‘Bada Bhai’, ‘Begunah’, ‘Beti’, ‘Chhote Babu’, ‘Coffee House’, ‘Dushman’, ‘Johnny Walker’, ‘Miss Bombay’, ‘Miss India’, ‘Mr. X’, ‘Narsi Bhagat’, ‘Paak Daman’, ‘Pawanputra Hanuman’, ‘Ustad’, ‘Zamana’, ‘Garma Garam’ had equally melodious songs like other films mentioned, albeit may not be so famous. Films produced in Madras were quite popular. AVM’s ‘Bhabhi’, ‘Miss Mary’ and ‘Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke’, Prasad Production’s first Hindi film ‘Sharda’, and MV Raman’s film ‘Asha’ played havoc with their captive audiences. Films from south somehow have always concocted a success formula, mixing comedy, tragedy, social message, excellent production values and above all superb music, which made their films very popular everywhere.

Satyen Bose’s ‘Bandi’ brought together all the three Ganguly brothers in one film for the first time. Later he would repeat this feat in ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’ in 1958. ‘Musaafir’, Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s first Hindi film as a director, was an experimental film depicting the phases of life – birth, life, death and rejuvenation, symbolically through a succession of tenants in a house on rent. Director Amiya Chakravarty’s competition with Gyan Mukherjee came to an end with his unexpected demise while the making of ‘Kathputali’ was in progress. The film was completed by Nitin Bose. (Later, Gyan Mukherjee also passed away while making ‘Sitaron Se Aagey’ (1958) which was later completed by Satyen Bose. Both films had the same story and same heroine).

With the musical blockbuster ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’ from Filmistan, Nasir Hussain introduced his own success formula of entertaining films and minted crores by repeating it several times, in a new garb. This film changed Shammi Kapoor’s luck, and made him an A grade actor. However, it did not much benefit the heroine Ameeta. She remained where she was – a second grade actress. Filmistan also released ‘Paying Guest’, with chocolate hero Dev Anand, with superb music and songs composed by SD Burman. Dev also featured in ‘Nau Do Gyarah’, another musical entertainer from Navketan, his home production company.

A surprise hit that year was the socio-religious film ‘Janam Janam Ke Phere’. The song “Zara Saamne To Aa O Chhaliye” became the unexpected top song of the year and an iconic one at that! ‘Apradhi Kaun’ was genuinely an excellent detective story. Amiya Chakravarty’s ‘Dekh Kabira Roya’ was a hit due to its superb music, though its cast was quite ordinary. ‘Do Aankhen Barah Haath’ got the national award. Amiya Chakravarty and Gope passed away this year. Nimmi got married. Vividh Bharati started its broadcast on 3rd October 1957.

Film ‘Captain Kishore’ had in its cast Suresh, Roopmala, Shashikala, Mirza Musharraf, Shaikh, Tun Tun and a host of minor, regular C grade actors. I wonder why the name of Vijaya Chaudhari, who is the film’s heroine, is omitted in HFGK. May be by oversight or due to error in the film booklet. Even in the film posters, her name is missing. By the way, there was another film, ‘Captain Kishori’ made in 1940. The heroine-cum-hero was Lalita Pawar. It was almost a female version of today’s film. Here is the story of ‘Captain Kishore’. . .

The story is set in a kingdom, before India got independence. The senapati of the army of Rajnagar, Balwant Singh, kills the king with the desire to rule the kingdom. He throws the blame of the king’s murder on a fictitious, imaginary person called Captain Kishore. When he wants to kill the Boy Prince, he is saved by a mysterious masked man calling himself Captain Kishore ! While taking the prince, he sees the sleeping Princess, Kiran, with a book of poems in her hand. He likes and recites a few poems. She wakes up and starts shouting. Her security man Buddu Singh and his fiancee Dolly, the dancer try to stop him, but he escapes with the boy.

Leela, cousin of Kiran, loves Kishore and arranges for him to work in the palace as a Munshi. Kiran comes to meet Leela and falls in love with Kishore, but she suspects that Kishore loves Leela. Meanwhile Balwant Singh sees them and is about to kill Kishore when the Boy Prince saves him and they escape. Now Balwant Singh forces Kiran to marry him. In the celebration, Dolly starts dancing. Kishore, Boy Prince and a small army come there. Balwant tries to shoot Kishore, but Leela comes between them and dies while saving Kishore. Balwant snatches Boy Prince and runs away in a car, with Kishore following in another car. At one railway crossing, Boy Prince jumps but gets stuck on rails and becomes unconscious. Kishore jumps on a running train and going to the engine front, picks up Prince in time to save him. Balwant Singh’s car falls into a valley and he dies.

Boy Prince becomes the king. Captain Kishore weds Kiran and becomes Army Chief cum Vazir. All is well. Film ends and the audience goes home.

Shashikala was a very capable actress. Unfortunately, her body structure was not suitable to become a heroine in any Indian movie. She was a little manly looking, tall and very well built. All this went against the popular image of an Indian film heroine which was that the heroine should be beautiful, short, frail and attractive. Her histrionic talents or dancing capability did not matter in any way. Her bio is not easily available in any book.

Shashikala Jawalkar-Saigal (born on 4-8-1932), much better known as Shashikala. Shashikala was born as one of six siblings in Solapur, Maharashtra in a well-to-do Marathi-speaking Jawalkar family. By age 5, she had already been dancing, singing, and acting on stage in many towns in Solapur district. When Shashikala was in her pre-teens, through ill luck, her father became bankrupt, and he brought his family to Bombay (now Mumbai) where they thought that Shashikala, the best-looking and most-talented among his children, could find work in movies.

For some time, the family lived with friends and barely survived, while Shashikala wandered from one studio to another looking for work. She earned in bits and pieces till she met Noor Jehan, the reigning screen queen. Noor Jehan’s husband, Shaukat, was making a movie ‘Zeenat’ then, and included Shashikala in a qawwali scene. She received 25 rupees for her role. She struggled on and got small roles in movies made by PN Arora, Amiya Chakravarti, and a few other producers. She got roles in V Shantaram’s ‘Teen Batti Char Rasta’ and a few other movies. While in her early twenties, Shashikala met and married Om Prakash Saigal, who belonged to the Kundan Lal Saigal family, and had two daughters.

Acclaimed supporting roles: In 1959 she appeared in Bimal Roy’s ‘Sujata’. In Tarachand Barjatya’s ‘Arati’ (1962), starring Meena Kumari, Ashok Kumar, and Pradeep Kumar, Shashikala portrayed a negative role, eventually winning a Filmfare Award. Soon after, offers began to pour in to her for supporting roles. She appeared in ‘Junglee’, ‘Anupama’, ‘Phool Aur Patthar’, ‘Aayi Milan Ki Bela’, ‘Gumrah’, ‘Waqt’, and ‘Khubsoorat’. Meena Kumari, Padmini, Nutan, Sharmila Tagore, Mala Sinha, and Waheeda Rehman have been among the leading actresses with whom Shashikala performed in supporting roles. While the female lead costars in the involved movies usually played roles of good-natured, modest, or pious women, Shashikala usually played either flighty and feisty bubbly women or vamps who plotted the downfall of others.

Later in her acting career, she would typically play the role of a sister or mother-in-law. She performed in supporting roles in over 100 movies. Asha Bhosle was often the playback singer for Shashikala in her earlier career. “Bheegi Bheegi Faza” (‘Anupama’, 1966), “Sheeshe Se Pee Ya Paimaane Se Pee“, “Zindagi Me Pyar Karna Seekh Le” (both from ‘Phool Aur Patthar’, 1966) are three popular songs which Asha Bhosle has sung for Shashikala. In the past few years, Shashikala has performed in a few television serials, including ‘Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai’ for Sony, ‘Apnaapan’ for Zee TV, ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ for Star Plus and ‘Son Pari’ for Star Plus. She has also had successful roles in ‘Mother’ (1999), ‘Pardesi Babu’, ‘Baadshah’, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham’, ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’ and ‘Chori Chori’.

Shashikala passed away on 4-4-2021 in Mumbai. She acted in 167 Hindi films and 74 songs featured her on the screen.

Awards: Shashikala had received eight nominations for the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award and won the award twice: 1962: Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award, for her role in ‘Aarti’, 1963: Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award, for her role in ‘Gumrah’, She received several awards for Best Supporting Actress (Hindi) at the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards – for ‘Aarti’ in 1963, for ‘Gumrah’ in 1964, for ‘Raahgir’ in 1970. Shashikala received the Padma Shri award (the fourth highest civilian award) in the year 2007 for her contribution to Indian Cinema. When she received the award, she said, “I have been recognized for this award very late, and indeed, I should have got this award long back.” She also received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the V Shantaram Awards in 2009.

Today’s song is sung by Geeta Dutt with chorus. Chitragupta’s name is enough to know that the song is melodious. In fact all songs of this film were good. A song by Talat Mehmood “Badal Jaaye Duniya, Na Badlenge Hum, Tumhari Kasam” (already on the blog) ranks in top 5 of Chitragupt’s best songs. Enjoy today’s song. . .
