Mere mehboob mein kyaa nahin

on:Two female singers dancing in tandem was a staple diet of B grade historical/ mythological movies of 1960s. But here we find the same thing happening in a Muslim social movie. The movie is “Mere Mehboob” (1963) and here Sadhana and Ameeta are found dancing and singing joyously. They sing in the voices of Lata and Asha Bhonsle respectively.
In the song they are describing their respective sweet hearts. From the description, it is obvious to the listeners that they are using similar words to describe their sweet hearts, and that could only mean one thing- that they are indeed describing the same person ! Even they half jokingly tell each other the same thing- that the qualities of the two persons being described are so similar, and let us hope it is not the same person. For those who have grown up watching Hindi movies, the signs are un mistakable. It means that both ladies have falled for the same gentleman, and it means that the remainder of the movie will see one of the ladies hell bent on sacrificing her love for the sake of the other.
I have made the above observation just on the basis of the lyrics of this song and I have not seen the song nor read the review of this movie. I request my readers who have watched this movie to confirm/refute whether my guess about the story line is correct.
The song is written by Shakeel Badayuni> Music is composed by Naushad.
It goes without saying that this song is quite a popular song even today.
song-Mere mehboob mein kyaa nahin (Mere Mehboob) (1963) Singers-Lata, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni,MD-Naushad
Lyrics
mere mehboob mein kyaa nahin
kyaa nahin
mere mehboob mein kyaa nahin
wo to laakhon mein hai ek haseen
wo to laakhon mein hai ek haseen,
ek haseen
mere mehboob mein kyaa nahin
kyaa nahin
mere mehboob mein kyaa nahin
bholi soorat adaa naazneen
bholi soorat adaa naazneen,
naazneen
mere mehboob mein kyaa nahin,
kyaa nahin
mere mehboob mein kyaa nahin
aaa aaa aaa
meraa mehboob ek chaand hai
husn apnaa nikhaare huye
o o
aasmaan kaa farishtaa hai wo
roop insaan kaa dhaare huye
o o
rashk-e-jannat hai wo mehzabeen
rashk-e-jannat hai wo mehzabeen,
mehzabeen
mere mehboob mein kyaa nahin,
kyaa nahin
aaa aaa aaa
maah ho anjum ho ya kehkashaan
sabse pyaaraa hai meraa sanam
aaa aaa aaa
uske jalwon mein hai wo asar
hosh ud jaayen allaah qasam
aaa aaa aaa
dekhle gar use tu kahin
dekhle gar use tu kahin,
tu kahin
mere mehboob mein kyaa nahin,
kyaa nahin
mere mehboob mein kyaa nahin
meraa mehboob hai jaaneman
karavaa kadmaah hai rooh gulbadan
ho ho ho
meraa dilbar hai aisaa jawaan
ho bahaaron mein jaise chaman
uski chaalon mein aisi lachak
jaise phoolon ki daali hile
uski aawaaz mein wo khanak
jaise sheeshe se sheeshaa mile
uske andaaz hain dilnasheen
bholi soorat adaa naazneen,
naazneen
mere mehboob mein kyaa nahin,
kyaa nahin
mere mehboob mein kyaa nahin
tere afsaanon mein meri jaan
hai jhalak mere afsaanon ki
daastaanen hain milti huyi
allaah ham donon parwaanon
parwaanon ki
ek hi shamaa ho na kahin
wo to laakhon mein hai ek haseen,
ek haseen
mere mehboob mein kyaa nahin,
kyaa nahin
mere mehboob mein kyaa nahin

Your guess is absolutely right, Atulbhai! Both Ameeta and Sadhana have fallen in love with the same person, Rajendra Kumar, and he has fallen in love with Sadhana, and has moved next door to Ameeta and hears someone singing his song next door – “Mere mehboob tujhe meri mohabbat ki kasam …”, goes to the balcony to see the girl who is singing, sees Ameeta standing at the window (Sadhna is singing from inside) and thinks Ameeta is the girl who studied in his college, and smiles at her.
All the songs in this movie were great, and needless to add, there was one impressionable teenager who swooned over Rajendra Kumar in this movie! Thanks for the song, Atul!
