Tujhe sooraj kahoon ya chandaa

Posted on: January 24, 2009

Most Bollywood movies have make believe story lines that have little resemblence with real life. But then, there come some movies which are so life like that one is bound to fall in love with these movies. One feels happy when the protagonists are happy and one is sad when tragedy strikes them.

“Masoom” (1984) was one such movie. To this date I have not been able to watch this movie a second time, because I cannot bear to see the little kid suffer a step motherly treatment at the hands of the family of his natural father.

Another such movie had come 15 years earlier, and it was called “Ek phool do maali” (1969). Here too, the storyline was realistic, something that can actually happen in real life. Sanjay Khan and Sadhana are in love and they have decided to marry, and expecting that they would in any case get married soon, they end up in a “roop tera mastaka” kind of situation. Later, Sanjay Khan leaves for his mountaineering expedition and from there he is supposed to go prepare for their wedding and the two were supposed to get married soon.

Then tragedy strikes and the mountaineers, Sanjay Khan included, are reported missing and presumed dead.

And as expected, Sadhana is pregnant. Balraj Sahni is a wealthy widower, who lost his wife during childbirth, and who can no longer father a child after an accident. He comes to the rescue of Sadhana and offeres to marry her, so that she could be spared the stigma of being an unwed mother, and he would have the satisfaction of having a kid to call his own.

It is a situation that is mutually beneficial to all concerned. Though Sadhana is not in love with Balraj Sahni, who is obviously much older than her, she atleast has her honour intact and her son gets an adoring father.

Just as I loved the small kid in “Masoom”, I love Balraj Sahni in this movie. The way he loves the kid and dotes on him moves the audience, including me.

Then there is a twist in the tale, but I will mention that when I discuss other songs from this movie.

Balraj Sahni sings a song expressing his affection towards the small kid. Once I had mentioned that lullabies sung by male singers are too few and far between, and I could only locate one such lullaby viz. “main gaaun tum so jaao” sung by Rafi in “Brahmachari”. Now I have found another. Yes, this song has some elements of lullaby in it too.

And this song is sung so lovingly by Manna Dey. The lyrics of Prem Dhawan are so moving. Ravi was wonderful as a music director in this song as well as in this movie.

It is a gem of a song, that never fails to move me, every time I listen to this song.

Song-Tujhe sooraj kahoon ya chanda (ek phool do maali) (1969) Singer-Manna Dey, Lyrics-Prem Dhawan, MD-Ravi

Lyrics

hmm hmm
tujhe sooraj kahoon yaa chandaa
tujhe deep kahoon yaa taaraa
meraa naam karegaa raushan
jag mein meraa raaj dulaaraa
tujhe sooraj kahoon yaa chandaa
tujhe deep kahoon yaa taaraa
meraa naam karegaa raushan
jag mein meraa raaj dulaaraa

main kab se taras rahaa thaa
mere aangan mein koyi khele
nanhi si hansi ke badle
meri saari duniyaa le le
tere sang jhool rahaa hai
meri baahon mein jag saaraa
meraa naam karegaa raushan
jag mein meraa raaj dulaaraa
tujhe sooraj kahoon yaa chandaa
tujhe deep kahoon yaa taaraa
meraa naam karegaa raushan
jag mein meraa raaj dulaaraa

aaj ungli thaam ke teri
tujhe main chalnaa sikhlaaun
kal haath pakadnaa meraa
jab main boodhaa ho jaaun
tu milaa to main ne paayaa
jeene kaa nayaa sahaaraa
meraa naam karegaa raushan
jag mein meraa raaj dulaaraa
tujhe sooraj kahoon yaa chandaa
tujhe deep kahoon yaa taaraa
meraa naam karegaa raushan
jag mein meraa raaj dulaaraa

Here is third para which plays at the end of the movie-
mere baad bhi is duniya mein
zinda mera naam rahegaa
jo bhi tujhko dekhe gaa
tujhe meraa laal kahegaa
tere roop mein mil jaayega
mujh ko jeewan dobaaraa
meraa naam karegaa raushan
jag mein meraa raaj dulaaraa
tujhe sooraj kahoon yaa chandaa
tujhe deep kahoon yaa taaraa
meraa naam karegaa raushan
jag mein meraa raaj dulaaraa

If someone can find the video, it would be nice.
