The first thing that comes to mind on hearing this song is ‘Wow’. No matter that I have heard this song umpteen times over the years, but yet, soon as this song plays, the mind gets up in excitement. A racy dance number from the film Qaidi No. 911 (1959), it has all the qualities of that are a hallmark of grade A gem songs.

Qaidi no. 911 is a film produced and directed by Aspi Irani under the banner of Super Pictures, Bombay. It is a characteristic social drama cum crime-action thriller story, with a good measure of messages of social and moral nature – and you guessed right that it is a Sheikh Mukhtar film. The main star cast is Sheikh Mukhtar, Nanda, Mehmood, Daisy Irani, Honey Irani, Meenu Mumtaz, Mukri, Gajanan Jagirdar, Heeralal, Achla Sachdev, Protima Devi, Babu Raje, Tuntun, Uma Dutt, Nagpal, Altaf, Bhudo Advani, Fazloo, Shetty plus a long list of other names that are not very familiar. Although the film was rated as grade B, yet the music of this film was a resounding success, and the songs have the capacity to bring a familiar smile even today, more than 50 years after the film was first released. Two songs of this film are already posted on this blog, “Meetthi Meetthi Baaton Se Bachnaa Zaraa” and “Pyaar Bhari Ye Ghataayen”. Here is the third song of this film, and as I said before, my, what a wonderful number.

The lyrics are by Hasrat Jaipuri and the music composition is by Dattaram. The singing voice is that of Lata Mangeshkar, and on screen, it is performed by Minoo Mumtaz and a group of lady dancers. Minoo Mumtaz has given a good account for herself, as she has performed this song exceptionally well. The setting is a restaurant, and Minoo Mumtaz is presenting a dance number for the people sitting there. Enjoy this delightful song – which is both an audio and visual treat.

tere teer ko, hum ne pyaar se
dil mein rakh liyaa
hum to kho gaye, tere ho gaye
ek baar mil ke

The arrow (of your glance)
I keep it lovingly treasured
In my heart
In just one encounter
I have lost myself to you

behki nigaahen, masti pilaayen
jis ko dekh len, us ko loot len
dil pe waar kar ke

Wanton glances from naughty eyes
Are a treat of delight
Will rob whosoever they glimpse
With an assault to the heart

mehfilen, jhoom utthi, sun ke meri chham chham

Many a festive celebration
Sway to the tinkling sounds of my dancing feet

khili zindgaani, mili hai nishaani
dil jo mil gaye, phool khil gaye
laakh chaand chamke

A flourish in life, on getting a promise
Flowers blossomed as our hearts met
And a thousand moons glimmered

aaj to, jhoom ke, gaaye koi sargam

Come, lets swing today
And sing a melody (of love)

utthi hai umangen, pyaar ki tarangen
ek baar tu, iss bahaar mein
dil pe haath rakh de

Rising emotions of love, like waves
If you would once, in this springtime (of love)
Place your hand on my heart

pyaar ki ye sadaa, sun le mere humdum

Oh my dear
Just listen to this call of love
(from my heart)

Sudhir ji,
QAIDI NO. 911-1959,was actually a very entertaining film, plus it had very good songs by Dattaram.Still it did not do very well, though it was not a failure.
Baiju,an honest man loves his motherless only child very much, but the child is kidnapped and as a ransom for his release,he is asked to divert the route of the cash van he was to drive.Compelled by love Baiju(shaikh Mukhtar) agrees and diverts the route. The cash is stolen.Police arrive and start chasing the robbers. The robbers die in a road accident, but the cash disappears and is not traced.Birju is arrested and sentenced to 7 years R.I. Unfortunately his child also dies.
In the jail,Baiju loved Guddu, the Jail Suptd.’s son just like his own son, doing all his work.Shambhu,a hardcore criminal escapes from the jail, taking Guddu with him.Baiju requests the Suptdt. to leave him free for just 2 days in which he will come back with Guddu, but the Suptdt. does not agree.
Baiju breaks jail, follows Shambhu, gets Guddu back after lot of suspense, fighting and thrills. The missing cash is also traced. The police appreciate his work and finally he is released from the jail, only to remain inside only to be with Guddu.
