In olden days, Hindi movie watchers often loved to watch movies telling sad and tragic tales. Personally I never liked watching such movies. I have never watched “Boot Polish” (1953) for this reason.
The movie has nice songs though. In olden days, one needed to sit through the whole movie if one needed to watch the songs. These days one can just watch the songs treating them as standalone songs and be done with it.
It appears that I am not alone. Khyati Bhatt, who sent me the lyrics of this song from “Boot polish” to me also could never bear to watch the movie.
Here is this song from “Boot polish” (1953). The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey and chorus. Asha Bhonsle sings for Master Ratan as well as Naaz. Manna Dey sings for David and other kids sing in chorus.
Shailendra is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan.

You have to simply click on ‘songs moviewise’ and then scroll down to Alphabet J films.Jaagriti is there very much.Once you get the list of songs,click on ‘Aao bachhon’.In its comments section you will find my comments on 6th and 7th july.Anyway here is the link-

The most interesting thing about BOOT POLISH is that the first cut of the film didnot have any song! When Raj Kapoor watched the movie in his now famous “cottage”, he felt dejected. He said if I didnot like the film, who will? Next day he called in his team — S-J, Shailendra, Hasarat etc. and again saw the movie. This time Raj stopped the movie at places where he wanted a song, and they got cracking. In one song he had Shailendra lip sync — chali kaun se desh gujaria. This film does not have any song of Mukesh ! Music was the highlight of the film when it released and Baby Naaz was a craze with her dances. And Atulji do, please, see the film after this fact and appreciate the importance of film songs in the narration of a film. This is unique to Hindi films and mastres of Hindi films have been those who knew how to use music to help the narration of the film. Songs are not stand alone thing in a good Hindi film. You cannot imagine a Raj Kapoor film without music. He even had songs in JAGTE RAHO when in the original screenplay there was no scope of any song. The climax of this film when Nargis gives water to Raj Kapoor and ‘jago mohan pyare jago’ plays in the backdrop cannot have been so effective without music!

Your info is absolutely right about adding songs in Boot Polish afterwards.
In this connection there is an interesting episode about the song,’Lapak zapak tu aa re badarwa’ by David and others.if you see the song once again,you will find a funny character Bhudo Advani(with a mouth without teeth).For this song Raj kapoor wanted only Bhudo in the song’s audience.For this Raj Kapoor used to send his personal car to fetch Bhudo Advani for the shooting and later drop him in the car.

I do agree with you Sir about RK’s films with melodious songs. I may have watched very few of his films, but have so many cds of his movies. Like Atulji, I can never bear the torture on poor, downtrodden, specially when it comes to a child. I remember watching Do Beegha Zameen in my young age and crying so bitterly during the movie. Itni buri yaad jhoodi hai ki ab kabhi bhi woh movie dekh nahin sakti. But like I said, I have all the cdc of these so called “reality” movies from this classic category. Truth is always bitter, but sometimes or for some people, it crosses all the boundaries. My husband and my boys always explains me that only this bitterness will purify someone’s heart. Kyunki dekhne ka nazariya badal jaata hai.

I guess that different people remember different things and messages from these films; these of course evolve with time reenforced by later viewings and new interpretations coming from reading about them. For me with almost no knowledge of Hindi, films like ‘Boot Polish’ and Jagte Raho, while showing the seemy side of life still offer hope. As the Time review I mentioned above says “”Boot Polish (R. D. Purie; Hoffberg),the first Indian-made film to be released generally in the U.S., has drawn quick comparison to Shoeshine, Vittorio De Ska’s 1947 Italian classic. The comparison, apparently based on the similarity of titles, is unfortunate. The two films move in opposite directions—Shoeshine despairingly toward the lower depths, Boot Polish wistfully toward the light. More importantly, their coupling might becloud the fact that Boot Polish is a nearly flawless little gem of a fable that glows with its own brilliance, without need of outside illumination.”
And one of the moving parts of the film reenforced by the review is “From her scrawny, seven-year-old frame, Actress Naaz somehow sums up the whole history of her sex, chattering happily as she works with her brother, huddling against him for warmth, patting his arm in a crisis and reassuring him, “I’ll manage it somehow.” “

Budo Advani features in JAGTE RAHO & SHRI 420 also. And did you, by the way, notice the number on David’s shirt — 420 ! David was called John Chacha for a number of years after the release of this film which was a moderate success. Please see early R K Films AAG, BARSAT, AWARA, AAH, BOOT POLISH, SHRI 420, JAGTE RAHO, AB DILLI DOOR NAHIN & JIS DESH MEIN GANGA BEHTI HAI and see how the songs add to the narration. This was the period when Raj Kapoor lived cinema. Notice also how the music is similar although he has used 4 different MDs — Ram Ganguly,Shankar-Jaikishan, Salil Chowdhury & Duttaram.

Thanks for your confirmation. How do you know about Shailendraji’s son Dinesh? How can I get in touch with him? I want to know so much about Shailendraji. Was Dinesh “Shaily Shailendra” who completed the song ‘kahta hai joker’ when Shailebdraji passed away untimely?

I was just 4 years old when I first saw ‘Boot Polish’ and frankly, I had enjoyed neither the movie nor the songs. Years later, while in college in Bombay, my friend and I had bunked class and gone for a morning show at a theatre nearby. This time, I loved the movie thoroughly. I’m not ashamed to tell you that I wept during some scenes.
‘Boot Polish’ had some superb songs. And the story too was very good.
It sent out a message that earning your money by doing some job is so much more honourable than begging for money. Rattan Kumar and Baby Naaz were the lead actors. David was just superb as ‘John Chacha’!
Rattan Kumar was quite a popular child actor those days. He was so convincing as a cripple in ‘Jagruthi’
His parents, however took a decision that was to have a catastrophic effect on this young actor. They migrated to Pakistan!
His career didn’t take off. Years later, there was a small news item in the newspapers here that he had passed away. He had been leading a life of utter penury.
Perhaps death may have come as a relief to this poor soul.
And now, it’s trivia time…..Look closely at the boy standing behind Rattan Kumar. Recognize him? No? He’s Mohan Choti!
